town of Vicenza, Italy. The considerations should also explore issues of making,

global markets and in relation to a delicate historic local environment. This will require an understanding of the ancient city of Vicenza its history and the challenge of an ancient urban form which is relevant within the 21st Century. An investigation of existing left-over space, in-between place and consideration of palimpsest will be essential in defining new opportunities and a clear strategy within the ancient city. In addition an understanding of the contemporary pressures on
maintaining and sustaining industry with respect to tourism and craft will also be required. Locations: Vicenza is located
in the north east of Italy in the Veneto region close to Venice and Verona. The investigations in this project are focussed within the ancient city centre bounded by the old city walls.
Method: Students will need to
TUTOR Cameron Wilson
demonstrate an understanding of the nature of Vicenza and the relationship of old to new. This will require an investigation of the urban grain within the ancient city walls, the city block, Palladio and his villas, and the Bacchiglione River and Fiume Retrone. In addition an exploration of the history of gold manufacturing will be essential in positioning for a continued reinvigoration of craft production and contemporary jewellery in Vicenza. Exploration of Venice and other surounding areas and cities are also a must.

VICENZA
BRIEF HISTORY 157BC
1404AD
1914-1918AD
Roman Rule (creation) Vicenza was sited in a strategic position as recognised by the Romans who re-named the town ‘Vicetia’ and incorporated it into their empire in 49BC.
Development alongside Venice From the 15th century the history of Vicenza follows similar lines to Venice.
World War One Vicenza’s area was a location of major combat in both World War I (on the Asiago plateau) and World War II (a focal center of the Italian resistance), and it was the most damaged city in Veneto by Allied bombings, including many of its monuments; the civil victims were over 2,000.
49BC Given Roman Town Charter It then acted as a main base along the Roman route from Milan to Trieste. The Corso Palladio still
1508AD Development alongside Venice 1508 Andrea Palladio was born in Vicenza

runs on this same Roman route.
Palladio’s first building in Vicenza (libiration) The Palazzo Civena designed and built in 1542.

1570AD
Roman Empire Falls The Roman empire fell and Vicenza suffered through several imbalances of power.
The Four Books on Architecture Palladio publishes his ‘Four Books on Architecture’
899AD Invasion by the Huns (destruction) The Hungarian troops attack the Italian Kingdom, burning Modena, and attacking Venice. Vicenza
Rule of the Bishops Emperor Otto III finally placed the city under the rule of the bishops in 1001, giving the population a chance to develop.
1164AD Veronese League In 1164 Vicenza joined together with Verona, Venice and Padua in the Veronese League and, three years later, the Lombard League of Towns in the fight against Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
MODERN DAY (return)
Palladio’s Death 1580 Palladio dies at the age of 72, shortly after designing his last buidling, the Tempietto for Villa Barbaro at Maser.
1945
1797AD
After World War Two The end of World War II was followed by a period of depression, caused by the devastation during the two world wars.
Under French rule Veneto came under French rule in 1797, as part of Napoleon’s personal Kingdom of Italy.
1960’s
1814AD Under Austrian rule Vicenza passed to the Austrian Empire.
1848AD Rising tensions with Austria Populace rose against Austria, more violently than in any other Italian centre apart from Milan and Brescia.
1404AD Rule of Venice (rule) Vicenza came under the alternating influence of Padua and Verona until it finally came under the rule of Venice in 1404 and was incorporated into the Veneto region.
World War Two (oppertunity) Austrians are defeated and concede the region of Venetia to Italy. A major step in Italian Unification.
1580AD
is almost entirely destroyed.
1001AD
1939-1945AD
1866AD Third Italian War of Independance Austrians are defeated and concede the region of Venetia to Italy. A major step in Italian Unification.
Rapid Economic Development In the 1960s, the whole central part of Veneto, witnessed a strong economic development caused by the emergence of small and medium family businesses, ranging in a vast array of products (that often emerged illegally) that paved the way for what would be known as the “miracolo del nord-est” (“miracle of the northeast”).
2018
Present Day Vecenza is now a world renound tourist spot with triving craft industries in jewllery and manufaturing. Its architecutral significance and history brings in 1000s of tourists every year and has lead to a vibrant and lively city.

Currently the site houses a ground level car park, holding 408 cars in 13,450 sqm. This is an innefficient use of space.
Creating a double stack of parking space provides 8000 sqm free area.
OR... CLEAR THE SITE
Another option may be to relocate the 408 Spaces to an underground automated parking garage, minimal impact at ground level, many options around the city to install the system. This would also allow for the option to increase the capacity if required. This system has been successfully implemented in many european cities including Vienna, above.
STRATEGIES CREATING A RIVER PARK

There is an opportunity to create a greenspace on the cleared site, this would involve developing a lanscaping strategy and work in par with the wider river connection strategy.

However, there are two large green spaces currently existing within easy reach of central Vicenza. creating an additional large greenspace may not be appropriate.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR A CLEAR SITE BLOCKING
CONTINUATION OF EXISTING URBAN FORM
Splitting up the site into smaller potential areas.
Potential exists to continue the urban form that exists around the site, adopting a similar strategy to the traditional buildings in Vicenza.
CONTINUATION OF COURTYARDS
TRACING THE AXES OF EXISTING BUILDINGS
Some existing negative buildings (red) at the South side of the site could be demolished to improve the area. There is then an opportunity to continue the existing forms typology of courtyards.
Tracing the axes of existing buildings shows the convergence points.
