01 The site is located in El Raval, Barcelona, Spain. Barcelona is a Mediterranean port city. The capital of the Autonomous Region of Catalonia, it is the second largest city in Spain after Madrid, with 1.5 million inhab-itants in the municipality of Barcelona, and more than 4million in the metropolitan region. It has two official languages, Catalan and Castillian Spanish, as well as having a rapidly increasing population of immigrants, mainly from North Africa and Latin America. Barcelona is a historic city with many historical buildings. Gaudí is one of the most famous architects in Barcelona, and many of his buildings are very famous in the world. One of his most well-known buildings is the Sagrada Familia, which is located in the Barcelona city. Every year, many tourists come to Barcelona to visit Gaudí's buildings. In addition to Gaudi, Barcelona also has a lot of historic buildings, and there are many in El Raval. el raval is one of the earliest areas in Barcelona. It began in bc218, with an area of 10,980 ha, and was previously surrounded by city walls. The area of the site is marked in yellow in the picture. There is a historic church called Carrer de Sant Pau. The area of the site is 16,893.86 ㎥ 6

Population Density (Inhabitants per sq. km.)

Heritage Buildings

El Raval has a very large population. According to the diagram, most of the residents are concentrated in the west, while other places are more functional buildings and historical buildings. The most densely populated places reached 14,000 per sq. km. These places are too crowded and the living environment is poor.

Many historical buildings are located in El Raval. But obviously, most historical buildings are in the north-east of the site. And the district on the north---Barri Gotic has much more historical buildings. Therefore more tourists come to Barri Gotic instead of El Raval.

The site is marked red in the diagram. There are no residential building in the site, so the number of inhabitants is zero. But surrounding the site, the population density is high. So many residents live here, and will use the site. Therefore it will be welcomed if the site changed from green space into a public building.

In the site, a very old church stand in the centre, which will be analysis in next pages. The design will consider the old church, and these historical buildings in Barcelona at the same time.

El ravel plans fewer walking paths than the adjacent Barri Gotic. There are fewer pedestrian roads in the eastern coastal region than in the western region.

There are a lot of parking lots on the ground and underground in the site, which can basically meet the parking demand in the site.

Most of the surrounding roads of the site are not pedestrian roads. Therefore vehicles could easily enter the site from the main road.

In the site, there is a underground parking that can solve the parking problem. This parking lot facing to the main road, which is very easy to access.

A large number of bus stops are located on the edge of El Raval, but only one bus line (line 120) enters it. This makes it difficult to take bus to enter El Raval.

The site is surrounded by six metro stations. The blue large circles show the distance for 5 minutes walk. Most of the El Raval can be covered by these stations.

Since the site is located at the edge of the area, it is very close to the bus lines and bus stops. It's more easy to enter the site by bus.

A metro station is locateed at the south of the site, which can cover the whole site. It is also near the bus stop, the main road and the underground parking, therefore it wil become a transportation.

Land Use Analysis

According to the research results of Studio A, we analyzed the architectural function of the entire El Raval. According to the diagram, the commercial area has the largest proportion of the ground floor. In the southwest part of El Raval, the ground floor is all commercial shops. But unlike shopping malls and markets, these commercial areas are just small individual shops. Their actual functions are not the same, including small shops, barber shops, restaurants, bars, etc.

The regional functions in the north are more complex, with a large number of functional buildings and historical buildings. This is why the economy in the north is more developed than that in the south. At the same time, the ground floor buildings in the north, especially the buildings along the street, also have a large number of small shops. In the southwest region, there are many small shops that serve the local people. The surrounding area of the site is also commercial area. Because the site is close to the main road and another district, the commerce is more

developed. Two small commercial streets are formed on the east and west sides of the site, and there are some relatively large shops. How to utilize these existing commercial areas has become the key to the design.

Designed by architect Mas Vilá in 1853, La Boqueria is a large public market. And it is also one of the city's foremost tourist landmarks. It is very crowded inside during daytime.

This old church is believed to be built in 977. The church consists of three parts, with an arched main entrance and a courtyard. It is still been used, and tourists can visit.

This mansion is designed by Gaudi for the industrial tycoon Eusebi Güell in 1888. It's part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main room is for entertaining high society guests. 13

SITE STRATEGY

Barcelona is famous for its historical buildings and handicrafts. In 2016, manufacturing accounted for more than 10% of Barcelona's production industry. Among them, the handicraft industry with the highest proportion is the textile industry and clothing industry, which are also nearly 10%. Many foreign tourists like local handmade products. Barcelona is a famous tourist city. The historical buildings especially Gaudi's buildings have attracted a large number of foreign tourists. In 2017, Barcelona's tourist population has surpassed the local population, and a large number of immigrants have entered. The proportion of original population is already less than 20%. A large number of tourists have driven the city's tourism, service industries, and commerce. Many tourists come to Barcelona not only to visit Gaudí’s buildings, but also to shop in the markets and shops to buy local handmade products. Compared to the Barri Gotic area, the number of tourists in El Raval, which is also a historical area, is relatively small. A large number of tourists are more inclined to visit the Sagrada Familia in the north and Barri Gotic with more historical buildings. At the same time, most of the historical buildings in El Raval are also concentrated in the northeast, near the Barri Gotic area. Therefore, the southwestern region is economically backward, and the city is crowded, with a large number of immigrants living here. Unlike the large number of cultural buildings

18

Industry

in the northeast, there are only a large number of high-density houses in the southwest. This prevents the economic development of this area, so a breakthrough is urgently needed to rejuvenate the entire area. In order to attract more tourists to the southwest of El Raval to improve the economy of the area, this area needs something to attract tourists. It is impossible to build historical buildings, so building a market selling handicrafts became an excellent choice. At the same time, there is the only valuable historical building in the southwest area, which is Sant Pau del Camp. Close to this historic church, combined with a large market selling local handicrafts that tourists love, this area will attract more tourists to visit and buy goods.

Tourist

By combining historical buildings and local handmade products, two things that tourists like, the southwest of El Raval will be rejuvenated.

There are many handicraft shops and workshops in Barcelona. But they are scattered in various places in the city, and the handicrafts sold in each store are also different. According to the diagram, the El Raval area and the surrounding handicraft shops are concentrated in the north and Barri Gotic area. In the south, there are no handicraft shops at all. There are also many events about handicrafts held regularly in the city. Most of these activities have their own fixed venues, two of which are close to the site. In these activities, visitors can enter the building, appreciate or buy handmade products. At the same time, some craft makers will make handicrafts on the spot in the building, and visitors can participate in it. Craft makers will also teach visitors how to make handicrafts. This is very attractive to tourists who like local handmade products, so these exhibitions are very popular each year. The area of influence of a large market & exhibition building is about 1000 meters, so according to the diagram, there is a lack of such a place in El Raval area. If a new market is built here, it will not overlap with the scope of other venues. 19

The circulation of the market is very neat, with a total of eight entrances. The four main entrances are connected to three corridors, and four rows of small shops are set up between the corridors. The corridors meet in the center, so the central area become the most crowded area. The corridor is generally 3m, and the size of a single store is 2.5x1.8m. The designs of these sizes are relatively reasonable and can be used for reference. The building also uses natural light lighting, which is very suitable for the market. 21

Not movable The Boqueria market was built in 1853 and is also a market mainly selling food. The circulation of the market is relatively simple, consisting of eight vertical corridors and nine horizontal corridors. The center of the market is composed of multiple circular corridors, and all sub corridors are connected to the central ring. The corridor in the center is a main corridor with the widest width but still only two meters. Compared to Sant Antoni Market, Boqueria's corridors are narrower and people will feel crowded, especially during peak hours. The shops in the market are relatively fixed and cannot be moved. And because the flow of people in the market varies greatly at different times, for example, there will be a lot of people in the afternoon on holidays. Therefore, if the market's circulation is movable, then this situation can be well. And the variable circulation can also make the 22

market multifunctional, no longer just selling food, and even holding various events and parties. A large number of goods in the market are placed on both sides of the corridor instead of in the store, and customers can directly see most of the products. This format is very good for market, and customers can easily choose the store they like.

Multi-functional Plaza: Event & Market & Plaza The Spanish Town is a small village located on a mountain with many buildings. Among them, two buildings are important, a small exhibition hall and a large multi-functional exhibition hall. In this village, two largescale handicraft exhibitions are held every year and exhibits are sold. Small exhibition hall exhibits handicrafts or paintings and other artworks, but they are not sold. The large multi-functional exhibition hall will hold events, and many small independent shops will be placed in the building. People can buy their favorite handicrafts when

participating in the exhibition. The interior of this large building is flexible, and there are no walls in the exhibition area, so craft makers can place independent shops of their own size according to their needs. After the event ends, these shops will be cleared, and they will also be used for other largescale events. This flexible design makes the building multifunctional and can host various events.

There is a large public square at the entrance. Some bands will hold concerts here, and many people will gather here at night. There will also be some other activities, such as dancing activities, DJing activities. This large public outdoor plaza gives it unlimited possibilities and attracts a lot of people to participate in activities. This square is surrounded by a circle of buildings. They are basically commercial buildings such as restaurants and coffee shops, serving people who come here to participate in activities. 23

HISTORICAL BUILDING ANALYSIS There is a church with a very long history in the site, named Sant Pau del Camp. There are no sources about the monastery's origins, but the monastery is documented from 977. In 985 it was sacked and destroyed by the Muslim troops of al-Mansur Ibn Abi Aamir, and restored in 1096. The main entrance of the church faces northwest, close to the road. The church is surrounded by trees and most of these areas are for public. The northeast side of the church is used as a parking lot, beside it there are some stools, swings and sandpits for children to play. To the southeast is a vegetable plot with some plants. Beside the plot there is a 3.5m terrain, above which is a public green area and walking path. To the south of the church is a modern building, which is a school for elementary and junior high school students. There is also an outdoor basketball court in the school, very close to the church. The church and the school are very close, the gap between them is very short, and it is not open to the public. Standing on the high ground in the southeast of the site, people can see the panoramic view of the church, which is a very good place to appreciate historical buildings. There is also an open space on the north side of the church, which is more suitable for the construction of new buildings Building Public Church's Space

Sant Pau del Camp 24

There is a parking lot full of trees between the church and the site. This is a good buffer area, allowing a suitable distance between the surrounding buildings and the church. This will not damage the original spatial quality of the church, but also allow the construction of new buildings and squares for visitors to watch the church

Car Parking

There is a 3.6 meters terrain around the church, and above the terrain is a public green space platform. Here is a good viewing platform, visitors can see all of the church from the platform. This is also a corridor, and a large number of people pass by here every day. They can also see the church at any time while walking.

School There are many residential buildings around the site, with commercial shops in their ground floor. This type of house is very common in Barcelona. It is worth noting that there are also many functional buildings here. The most noticeable one is the large gym in the northeast. It occupies a huge area and is composed of 4 buildings. Unfortunately, its main entrance faces north, so it is impossible to enter the stadium from the venue. At the same time, there are many schools around the site, so how to make

students use this site is also a point worth considering during the design. Elementary and junior high school students can play in the new public space in the site, while higher grade students can use the site or new workshops to complete their schoolwork. Barcelona is a tourist city, so many hotels can be seen in the city, the same as these surrounding areas. Existing hotels can provide accommodation for foreign tourists, which is also very important for the site to attract tourists.

Transportation Main Road Secondary Road Metro Station Bus Station Car Parking

There are two main roads around the site. The main road in the north is the main road in El Raval, and the road in the south is one of the main roads connecting the port, the coast and the city center. There are a large number of vehicles and pedestrians passing on these two roads every day, so this guarantees the crowd of users of the site. At the same time, the roads inside El Raval extend in all directions, although most of the roads are narrow and can only pass one way. But this also satisfies the walking requirements of pedestrians. 28

There are two subway stations in the southeast and southwest of the site. On the south main road, there are also a large number of bus stops for people to use. There is also an existing underground parking lot in the site, which can be used by the site. At the same time, there are many parking lots around the site. People can walk from the parking lot to the site in just a few minutes, which is very convenient.

Public Green Space

There are many public green spaces in Barcelona. Their functions are plazas, ground parking lots, walking paths, and rest areas. The site was chosen in the largest public green space in the south of el raval, so there is a large area for the construction of new buildings. At the same time, the public space function of the site cannot be completely eliminated. People need a public space to rest, and the church also needs it as a buffer space. At the same time, the public space can also be used as a viewing platform for the church, using the 3.6 meters terrain.

There are also several large public green spaces around the site. And there are many trees on both sides of the road, the whole city is full of natural vitality. The area around the church is also surrounded by trees. Therefore, when designing the new building, It is important to consider how to add trees to integrate this new site into the city.

The stadium consists of five buildings. It has many sports facilities, including badminton, tennis, swimming pool, treadmill, bicycle, etc. These users are also potential users of the new building.

The large building on the south consists of three parts. Two hotels and a concert face to the main road, so foreign tourists can live here, very close to the new building in the site. 29

As shown in the image, the roads on the east and west sides of the site are all commercial areas, including small shops, restaurants, retail stores, and food sales. The first floor and above are all residential areas, where a large number of local people live. The church and surrounding trees can be clearly seen from the street, without any obstruction on the view. At the same time, the main entrance of the church and the adjacent school also faces this road, and visitors can enter the church from here. This street has become more popular because of the existence of churches and many shops. Therefore, if you want to build a new market here, the integration with the existing commercial street will become very important. This street is very different from other streets in el raval, because the buildings on both sides of the street are from different times and the contrast is very obvious. And because of the existence of the church, the buffer space in this area is also relatively large, which is obviously different from other crowded streets. Therefore, the spatial quality of this area is better.

Some restaurants and cafes on the west side of the road will place tables and chairs outdoors for people to use under the shade of the trees. This business model is better because people can know what's on sale without going into the store. And sitting outdoors can enjoy the church as well , which is also a good place for tourists to rest. This business model can be used by more stores. Due to the lack of outdoor space, this pattern did not appear in the commercial street on the east side. Therefore, in the subsequent design, it would be a good choice to provide more outdoor space for the two existing commercial streets to allow them to use outdoor place. The road to the east is also narrower, so there are fewer people than to the west. Therefore a new road can be used to connect the two commercial streets, making it easier for people to shuttle between the two roads while introducing tourists into the new building.

32

The road on the north side of the site is narrow, only 4 meters at its narrowest point. The building on the back is a large gymnasium, composed of multiple buildings. However, there is no main entrance to the gym on the side close to the site, and the other side of the road is a brick wall formed by high ground. Therefore, there are relatively few people on this road, and basically no vehicles. In order to activate this road and turn it into a key position connecting the east and west roads, not only need to solve the terrain problem to allow people to enter the site from the north side, but also need to give this road some functions, such as setting several entrances of the new building on this road, or using it as a freight route for trucks.

The road on the east side of the site is similar to the west road, which is also a commercial street. There are many small shops on one side of the road, and on the other side is a public green space with terrain. But unlike the road on the west, the road on the east has very few people and few shops. The shops on the east side did not use outdoor space like the shops on the west side, which also resulted in fewer people on the whole street. It is a good choice to use the two existing commercial streets and combine them. Establishing a new commercial road in the site to connect the two roads not only allows more people to come to the east store, but also introduces a large number of people who want to buy goods into the site. This is very good for the new market in the site. At the same time, elimating the terrain of the east side road, so that more outdoor space can be used in the store. A natural outdoor market will be formed automatically, and the east side road will be reactivated.

DESIGN STRATEGY& TARGET POPULATION

Spain's handicraft industry is very famous in the world. Every year, many handicraft activities are hold in different Spain cities, attracting a lot of people to visit and buy products. Handicrafts full of Spanish cultural symbols are loved by many tourists. Many foreign tourists come to Spain to buy some distinctive handicrafts as souvenirs. Glass Artwork

As the second largest city in Spain, Barcelona not only has a large number of famous buildings, but also many distinctive handicrafts. Gaudí’s buildings and handicraft shops have almost become a must-see for most tourists. The most popular handicrafts here are textiles and ceramics. These products are generally not expensive, but they are very distinctive and let people know Barcelona's culture. These small products have become the best choice for tourists as souvenirs. In addition, glass painting handicrafts and small handicrafts (including key pendants, purses, etc.) are also very common in craft shops in Barcelona. For craftsmen, these things are easy to make. However, in the handicraft shops, tourists can only see the handicrafts that have been

Tourists 34

made, and cannot know the production process and craftsmen behind them. Therefore, if customers can see how these products are made in the workshops, and at the same time let them know the craftsmen who make these products, this can attract more visitors and make them more willing to buy these handicrafts. Craftsmen can also teach more knowledge on site to tourists who want to learn how to make these handicrafts. Therefore, an area is needed in the workshop for tourists to learn. Those who want to become formal students can also use the additional workshops in the building to make handicrafts. Public plaza is also needed in the site. small events can been seen everywhere in Barcelona. Therefore a public plaza can provide people place to hold these events, such as handicraft festivals and band performance.

Corresponding to these people, the main functions of this new building are largescale indoor markets, workshops and shopping malls, exhibitions, and outdoor plazas. These functions should not be completely fixed but flexiable, and should be adjusted at any time according to the needs of users.

The textile industry is a traditional handicraft industry in Barcelona. In the past, it was one of Barcelona's most important industries. With the development of technology, the appearance of flow process allows people to produce clothes in batches. The handmade textile industry is no longer as important as it used to be, but it has also become a cultural carrier in Barcelona.

Ceramic handicraft products have always been favored by people. Ceramic products are beautiful in appearance, good in texture, and very artistic. Craftsmen can process ceramics into a wide variety of shapes by drawing the embryo, and then decorate the ceramics by painting.

Glass handicrafts are common in various countries, and small glass handicrafts are favored by many tourists. They are inexpensive, easy to carry, and full of features. Therefore, they are regarded by many tourists as one of the most suitable handicrafts as souvenirs.
