Ma. Ximena Fontaiña, Uruguay. Architect, graduated “cum laude” at the “Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad de la República” (UdelaR), Uruguay in 2014.

I am interested in interior and landscape architectural design. I delight in the process of making architecture and producing models, drawings, collages and visualizations to explain concepts and illustrate ideas.

Super high quality in documentation work and blueprints, following the international standards.

My thesis “Aeropuerto” has been selected and exposed in many competitions like “Archiprix 2017”, “Arquisur 2015”, and has been edited under the supervition of “Laguarda Low” firm. From 2007 I start working on architectural design and development projects being part of several work groups and thinktanks in Montevideo, Uruguay. In 2011 I joined “Estudio Set”, a local architectural office who offers outsourcing services, developing several projects in Uruguay and abroad. I have been invited to participate on several academic activities at the “Facultad de Arquitectura y urbanismo de la Universidad de la República” (UdelaR) Montevideo, Uruguay, “ Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata” (FAU UNLP) La Plata, Argentina and “Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology” (CEPT University) Ahmedabad, India. Since I moved to Malaysia on 2016, I have been worked as free lance architect developing architectural project as well as master plans, mixed-use centers, retail & entertainment venues, office complexes, residential precincts, private resorts, and public projects for the firm “Laguarda Low”.

In the research for simplicity and integrity within the built environment. My goal is to make a positive contribution to the landscapes we all share, and I believe that a holistic approach to sustainability is vital in today’s world. I strongly believe that well-designed spaces enrich people’s lives.

Excellence in graphic design to be posted in the different stages on the project (schematic design, desig development, details) High performance, efficiency and productivity in order to comply with the strict demands in terms of deadlines and quality that impose big global companies, obtaining 100% clients satisfaction. Correct, fluent and organized communication and documentation systems, under strict rules of confidentiality.

CASA PINAR 2011/2013 Canelones, Uruguay

Casa Pinar is located in El Pinar, an area of forest and sea and surrounded by chalet-style houses. It is a family house designed for a couple with growth prospects. Therefore, it was intended to be built in two stages.

STAGE 1 STAGE 2

FIRST STAGE

The spatial planning is simple, a big public area integrate living, dinning, kitchen and backyard. The access divides the public space from bedroom and bathroom. SECOND STAGE

Two bedrooms, a bathroom and a study were added. All new spaces were added to complete the L shape. The L encloses the back garden making it more intimate, in addition to linking it 100% with each interior space.

The materiality is robust and resilient, as befits a windswept, coastal site. The textures and tones of the house are raw and rugged, and have been deliberately chosen to become more beautiful as they age. Leaving the bricks in sight has required a perfect make. The house pursues principles of sustainability and it can be tweaked to suit the prevailing season and weather. In summer, the house is cooled by sea breezes through cross ventilation. In winter, a fireplace duct goes along the whole house warming up the living room as well all all the bedrooms. As the brick has really good thermal mass, it helps to keep the whole house cool in summer and warm on winter time.

AEROPUERTO 2015, Montevideo. Uruguay

Aeropuerto is an exercise about boundaries, overlaps, scales and flows. Boundaries between urban and rural, earth and sky, between cities that do not meet.

We work on the pre-existence of Melilla airport, that is located in the north-west of Montevideo, Uruguay. It is a depressed area despite having great potential because of the strategic location, especially its proximity to the port and two of the major highways of the city, makes the area a place of great potential for projects that are gradually reconverting it. In this reconversion context, we propose to reinterpret the existing areas, considering its elements and capitalizing its strong link to civil aviation. Through this approach we seek to reinterpret and improve accessibility and organization of the different activities taking place at the airport. From a semantic point of view and considering the typical constructions of the productive rural environment (sheds and greenhouses, as well as typical hangars), it seems accurate to think about the terminal as a lightweight construction that evokes the lightness of aeronautics shapes an architectural perspective. Our inspiration point is the hangar’s typology. As a fuselage of an airplane, the structure of this new ship must be created strategically to allow the airport to expand. Take into consideration the roof plan as a matter of design, will give rise to carry out experiments and physical tests with models regarding the shape of the roof’s cover.

Check the whole thesis here.

Models help to understand the structure as a system and allow to visualize mechanical loads. Folds released the design of preconceptions. The technique develops creativity , coming often to unknown results to be known and properly channeled.

Something more about models here.

The terminal building consists of eleven modules, five modules are intended for public space, three consist on open service modules while the remaining three are operating devices. Each operating device can be considered as a control center which accommodates air conditioners terminals, toilets, electricity and data boards, light control panels, surveillance cameras, audio, flight information, etc. As well as the terminal offices. Devices allow to define two diffent zones regarding users comfort: office airport crew and pasangers.

1. TEXTILE ANCHORAGE

A tent revealing the structural skeleton in daylight. When defining the materiality of the building, the conditions were as follows : allowing the passage of natural light, waterproof, fire resistant, with low thermal transmittance and acoustic isolation. The chosen material was an isolating membrane called TensothermÂŽ. It consists of a three layer system. The outer layer of Teflon, which forms an impermeable barrier and, in the inner side, a layer of acoustic PTFE, which collaborates to improve the acoustic quality of the space, absorbing broadband noise and reducing sound transmission. The central component is an Aerogel blanket, excellent thermal isolator, with very little weight, which allows an improvement of thermal, solar and acoustic capabilities, maintaining its translucent and waterproof quality.
