city atlas contents

Amsterdam 2023

collective research project

City Atlas investigates mechanisms of urban transformation in Amsterdam from the late sixteenth century to the present. Through archival sources to satellite images, it produces an atlas of synthetic drawings. With the aid of digital tools, the project explores the possibility to overlay, compare, and annotate the built environment at different moments in time.

Unfinished Building is a twoweek design project that explores building proposals of unfinished and adaptable nature by making large, crude timber models in scale 1:25. The project experiments with scale and proportions and reflects on building elements, structural logic, and construction paneling. It concludes with selecting a setting and designing the composition of model (architecture) photography.

The Berlage

design

The Medical Complex is a collective thesis project examining healthcare for the twenty-first century, undertaken by twelve international students at The Berlage. It explores a comprehensive approach to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, wellbeing, fitness, and care, with each student designing specific departments or integrated systems within the complex. Set on the site of Tony Garnier's Édouard Herriot Hospital in Lyon, originally completed in 1933 and currently undergoing renovations, the project reflects on the modernist ideal of healthcare architecture and reconsiders the contemporary perception of health.

The quarry hides in the woods, a feature artificially created then abandoned, an abrupt pit separated from the city by a highway. Routinized absurdity and absentminded surrealism created a sense of anachronism, turning the quarry into an unusual, futuristic relic. The project proposes the reuse of an artificially modified natural landscape in the context of a declining rustic-belt city.

Mirror Flower Water Moon is a Chinese idiom describing things that can be seen but cannot be attained, like flowers in a mirror and moon reflected in water. The thermal baths project duplicates this sense of space-time displacement as visitors explore different programs and immersive themselves in varous scenes created by alternating materiality and transparency of the spaces.

La Nouvelle Vague is a competition for public seating as a piece of urban furniture. We interpret The French New Wave through a wide shot in a film: while the camera proceeds smoothly, actors come and go in the scene, each a piece of information that constitutes the whole image. Free movements of individuals together create meaning for the collective.

Amsterdam 2023

collective research project

The Berlage collaboration with Andrea Ramos

City Atlas investigates mechanisms of urban transformation in Amsterdam from the late sixteenth century to the present. Through the lens of six emblematic sites, it traces physical changes resulting from processes of urban expansion and renewal, from the adaptation or renovation of buildings and blocks to the demolition and reconstruction of whole streets and neighborhoods.

The project gathers information from archival sources to live-time satellite images to produce an atlas of synthetic drawings that reflect spatial transformations. With the aid of digital tools such as Allmaps and Placemark, it explores the possibility to overlay, compare, and annotate the built environment of Amsterdam at different moments in time.

The research is compiled in the format of a published atlas.

Lyon

2024–25

collective post-master thesis

The Berlage

The Medical Complex is a collective thesis project that examines the spatial implications of twenty-first century prevention, diagnosis, treatment, wellbeing, fitness, and care through the design of a healthcare facility.

The project focuses on the existing Édouard Herriot Hospital in Lyon chosen for its rich architectural heritage, strategic position in the city's dense urban fabric, and its immediate accessibility to Lyon's citizens.

The Medical Complex seeks to integrate human-centered design principles and contemporary technologies while preserving the essence of Garnier's original "garden city for the sick" concept, reimagining the hospital as a civic architecture that enhances the well-being of all who interact with it, from patients and healthcare providers to visitors and residents.

Proposed

design

The surgical center serves multiple purposes: it is a workplace for surgeons, nurses, and various staff; a treatment and recovery space for patients; an accompanying space for friends and family; and an educational facility for professionals and students. It also functions as a hub for knowledge production and exchange, providing training to medical students and professionals both nationally and internationally while facilitating the exchange of ideas and innovation.

The design of the surgical center creates de-medicalized areas alongside critical surgical spaces that encourage the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and consolation. It is equipped with an observation theater, a surgerybroadcasting room, a public courtyard with various waiting spaces, staff resting areas, and study spaces for students. This multifaceted approach enables the center to foster innovation in the field of surgery while supporting both clinical practice and education.

Wooden wall divides space and serve as the surface to hang drawings

Key objects

a piece of furniture that helps to define each space formed between walls

Exhibition “rooms”, 1:1

Wooden walls define a series of spaces, or “rooms,” for the exhibition. Each space is defined by one key object––or one piece of furniture––accompanied by marks on the floor that indicate how they organize medical spaces, all in 1:1 scale.

Relevant triptychs and drawings of departments and systems are displayed around the key objects, and the 1:1 objects are distributed throughout the spaces between the walls.

The exhibition is consisted of two parts, a series of exhibition "rooms" and a master plan with anatomical models that represent fragments from The Medical Complex. Through the juxtaposition of different scales across the spaces, the exhibition deconstructs the complex into various fragments in the 1:1 objects, 1:25 anatomical models, and triptychs, while simultaneously integrating all

Historical landmarks, 1:25

We propose to collectively model the preserved historical landmarks to better enrich the story of the master plan. Current selections include the entrance pavilion, the chapel, one chimney, and a section of the periphery wall.

Anatomical models, 1:25

The 12 models of centers and departments present a collection of fragments by dissecting and isolating selected spatial moments in the complex.

Analogous to anatomical models in medicine and painted in glossy colors, these models form an anatomy of the complex through zoom-in analyses of old and new constructions, interior and exterior spaces, structure, and various services systems.

the clinical trial

film for the medical complex 2024

The Berlage led by Edwin Zwakman collaboration with Claire Demeyere

The clinical trial is a two-week representation experiment for the Medical Complex. Maquettes and scenography are designed to further elaborate on design aspects of select spaces in the healthcare facility. Building materials, lighting effects, colors, textures, patterns, and backgrounds are designed and tested through the lens of a camera, assuming a hypothetical gaze on the spaces.

Quick and easy material solutions are invented for mimicking real-life scenarios in a minature scale of 1:20. Post-production, including filters, sounds, and cuts complement the somewhat theatrical models to create a series of fragmented narratives for the Medical Complex.

The thermal baths project duplicates this sense of space-time displacement through varous scenes created by alternating materiality and transparency of the spaces.

People come for beach retreats, yet the remaining constructions of the past, half covered by earth and trees, pop out every now and then. Going through construction 220, a relic from a longterm preparation of a military operation that never happened, is like falling through a metaphorical rabbit hole which sends visitors to a mysterious landscape blurred by steam from the hot baths. As visitors float through spaces, they are constantly moving between different levels of lighting, sound, and enclosure, and at certain moments, through apertures on the facade, get a glimpse of the exterior “reality”. These moments of visual connectivity between the exterior and interior act as moments of reveal, as if peaking into the backstage of a theater.

la nouvelle vague

Chengdu 2020 competition collaboration with Shihui Zhu

La Nouvelle Vague is a competition for public seating as a piece of urban furniture. We interpret The French New Wave through a wide shot in a film: while the camera proceeds smoothly, actors come and go in the scene, each a piece of information that constitutes the whole image. Free movements of individuals together create meaning for the collective.

Varing heights and widths of the net encourages any kind of "misuse" of the seating. Wider sections of the net allow two adults to lie side by side, narrower areas are better for sitting; children can go under higher sections, and the parts that are closer to the ground can be jumped over. The void in the middle could be completely meaningless, or can be converted into a temporary point of focus when actions such as discussions or performances take place inside.

Syracuse Architecture

Routinized absurdity and absent-minded surrealism created a sense of anachronism, turning the quarry into an unusual, futuristic relic. The project proposes the reuse of an artificially modified natural landscape in the context of a declining city in the rustic-belt .

As a remnant of industrialization, the quarry symbolizes the past glory and achievements of Syracuse. The project choose to flood the quarry with trees, leaving parts of bare ground. The pit, small warehouses, abandoned metal equipment and rocks covered with graffitti are deliberately left out, like archipelagos poking out of sea water, revealing the past of the site. The research center acts like a probe penetrating this artificially modified natural site. Observation decks are set at each different typological and vegetational area, taking "samples."
