The vision for the Bridgeport Parks System is to engage citizens and new partners in the parks, revitalize the city and the region, and reconnect to the city’s vast, but often hidden, waterfront. As part of the Bridgeport Park System, the plan for the Remington Arms Site is to develop a community park to revive the existing brownfield and engage the citizens of Bridgeport.

Three neighborhoods: North Bridgeport, Boston Avenue and East side adjacent to the site. According to percent of city total open spaces and park, Boston Avenue and East side are more in need for a park than North Bridgeport.

Site Research The site is a vacant lot in Yangxing industrial area of Shanghai with 42 families in containers. In our investigation, the settlements of those who live in the containers are not fixed. The upper picture shows the migration situation of seven typical residents in the site in recent years.

Portable Herb Handbook collaborated with Panpan Zhang

PORTABLE HERB HANDBOOK Therapeutic Garden of Container Location: Shanghai, China ASLA Student Award Group Work/Team Leader Year 2011 6

This project provides a portable herb handbook for migrant families who live in containers. Based on the survey and poll of the local folk, this project is aimed to provide migrants with a timely supply of medicine, to create a seemly landscape pattern and to improve the life quality more effective. Moreover, to fit the frequent migration of those families, the herb handbook can be easily relocated with the container entity anywhere as an entirety. With this new style portable herb handbook, the containers community where the migrant families live in becomes an animate herb yard rather than a stagnant vacant lot. Besides that, the migrant families benefit much by saving money on medicines and enjoy a lot of fun in planting activity.

Find a right place for each herb according to the average length of its Plant Height and the radius of Root Soil Ball in the coordinate system. Then the plants are divided into four types considering the size of Plant Height and Root Soil Ball.

MAPPING INFORMATION Research Project Studio Ecocentric Practice Year 2014

Project 1

Marine ducks travel great distances, inhabit multiple ecosystems, and are susceptible to a variety of human-related threats that have likely led to recent and drastic population decline in many species. Working closely with wildlife biologists, emerging technology, and data sets, we develop this drawing to show the food chain and the habitat of harlequin duck. The site is located at the shore line of Sachuest Point, Providence. This drawing is collaborated with Hanning Zhang 13

Modern cities meet with complicated problems and they cannot be solved by a single subject like architecture or urban design. Landscape Urbanism is a multi - disciplinary approach introduced to this urban design plan to achieve the design intent of a green city. This master plan focuses on the development of Qingyuan Da Yan Lake Area as a sustainable, dynamic, mixed-use new city center.

The plan is based on the framework of roads and public spaces to create a green way that integrates the existing ecological conditions and responds to the local cultural identity. The master plan for Qiangyuan Da Yan Lake Area strengthens multi - disciplinary subjects, such as the coordination of building and landscape, the connection of city roads and walking systems, the control of skyline and building density and the cooperation of urban fabric and green infrastructure.

After the Ya’an earthquake, three core challenges emerged for the village being served; housing shortage, refugee migration, and paralyzed water infrastructure. This solution will build up the infrastructure based on the water system, implement intelligent resiliency, and have the capacity for sustainable development. The system itself should evolve in pace with the development of the village. At the beginning of the revival, the system will serve to provide the basic need of drinking water. Once basic needs have been met, the village will start to develop its tourism, as well as develop the center pool and the wetland system. During this period, the waterscape will function as the activity center of the village, facilitating communication among villagers and visitors. In order to preserve these steps in case of another earthquake strike, the storage tank under the center pool will be utilized as the emergency water source when the water tank is destroyed. The center pool, along with the neighboring wetlands, will function as the best water regulation and irrigation system in the case of flooding. Last but not the least, the layout of the functional parts within the new village will be designed to protect the local culture as well as promoting the development of dynamic tourism.

Designing the Groups The unique part of the group design is having a wise water system. Each group will have a center pool and each center pool will be connected by a bio swale system, which will solve the water problems as well as create the waterscape.

After purification, the water could be re-used as living water. The redundant water will be saved in the underground reservoir for emergency use such as an earthquake.

In this project, I developed the storm water management plan for the Esek Hopkins Middle School. The main campus is flat, with a slope covered dense vegetation that cuts off the view of the river. The idea was to redesign the contour and planting strategies so as to build rain gardens and bioswales while collecting the storm water. Here are the construction drawings I developed for this project.

Merging Morden and Classical The Classical Chinese Garden is the miniaturization of nature. This design arranges carefully the attractions as well as the route for visiting, creating different scenes for each step. The garden also serves as a spiritual place for experiencing the philosophy of the Chinese traditional game " go". The water, rocks and plants all represent certain virtuous qualities of "go", inspiring visitors' pursuit of art and spiritual virtue. 29


LIGHT & SURFACE Digital Fabrication Digital Fabrication Year 2014 In this studio, I developed a method to build curved surfaces using triangles and created openings to control light and shadow. I tried different variations and thought about the ways to use this method in landform design.

In this construction experiment, we built a space with cardboard to accommodate 11 people in a 1:1 scale. After that, our team promoted this activity to Shanghai Museum for high school student education.

INTERN WORKS IN TONGJI URBAN PLANNING INSTITUTE

In the Slender West Lake Scenic Area, there are many Chinese traditional buildings and gardens along the river. Poor maintenance is threatening to irreparably demage the buildings. Also, visitors access is denied because of the lack of paths and shelters. My team’s proposal is not only to conserve and renovate this historical area, but also to redesign the open spaces to promote human engagment.

This is a research and mapping project that aims to study the El Paso community school network and the city’s infrastructure, education level distribution and economic situation. I finished collecting data, mapping and developing infographics and part of the ELCC network analysis. All the work were used as the final documents of the design project and this project finally won the first place at the ELCC Board vote.

I was involved in three campus planning projects while I was working in SmithgroupJJR and worked as site designer. This page shows the selected model, rendering and diagram works. All the works on this page were used as the final document of the design projects.
