01 MULTI-FACADE SKYSCRAPER This skyscraper focus on the form that goes to negotiate with its boundaries, providing more surfaces and outer spaces that improving high quality and variety of the building environment. Since the multi-facade not only brings sun light but also fresh air to the building. This skyscraper may be a new typology for the official use.

PROJECT TYPE : Skyscraper KEY WORDS: Boundary, Skyscraper, Typology TUTOR: Prof. Ali Rahim Prof. Kerda Kolatan. Prof. Peter Trummer PARTENER: Jaeho Jin, Szu An Yao MY PART: 3D Physical Modeling; Rendering; Feasibility Analysis

New York City is experiencing a new era of high-rise constructions, with skyscrapers booming all over Manhattan in recent years and a 300 meter tall tower is currently under construction on the site. This project is located on 157 West 57th street in Manhattan, New York City. Between the 6th and the 7th avenues. The program of the tower is a typical official building in the New York City. However, the aim of the building is to create a new typological form for the skyscraper with more interacting between inner and outer spaces. making the living space towards the sky no more alike but more interesting.

Such as the diagram shows, in the main cities around the world, spending all his/her money on buying an apartment, one needs to spend generally around 20 years. House provides warmth and shelter for families. House should bring happiness to us. But after japan earthquake, we found that people get the key of the street and even will undertake the second housing loans. The property of privacy of dwelling determines that building is vulnerable. House should bring stability to people, but now they give people despair. Asian cities are developing at a fast speed. Which way will we choose? Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo are familiar with Manhattan more and more. But 911 terrorist attack come to us. We built so many skyscrapers to satisfy our physical and mental demand, but finally they become the source of catastrophe.

EASTERN GARDEN: BUILDINGS MIXED WITH NATURE

The ancients' eastern philosophy indicate that we should live with nature harmoniously. Easterners do not want to change the landscape but to construct it into nature to be one thing and without bound. Mixed buildings and nature boundless space stones, trees, corridor to break the border.

Boundless City The relationship between public city space and residential is based on relationship of Delaunay triangle and Voronoi, which are the relationship of complementary, according to Thousand-person index, there are 72 community in the vertical city, one community as a voronoi circle, the diameter ranges from 60m to 120m, the width of the circle are 24m (8m of residential on both side, 8 meter for transportation in the middle) and the center of each voronoi moves 35m down to generate the Delaunay triangle as the public city space. Thus make service and served space complementary. 4,041,0004,041,000 recidencial recidencial 4,041,000

Void Solid —— a design approach to enhance the void’s importance equal to the solid. Three-dimensions and high-density of the collective houses make the void no longer a scattered, unorganized space, but an important part with its own integrity and organizational framework. The greatest feature of the void is its mediality. It can not only pass light, wind, rain water and other natural substances, but can also deliver sensory information such as sight, sound and smell. For people living in the collective house, the solid can meet basic life needs, and the void can improve quality of life.

The site is at The end of Shanghai Changjiang Bridge of Chongming Island. On a noisy, air- polluted area, the design leaves the good earth for the island aborigines. There are 6 main entrances for the residential, with 2 main entrances in each courtyard on the ground. A circle of high way round the residential connecting the city road, one on the east, another on the west and a fork junction on the north from the Changjiang Bridge shown the most logistics of the residential enterance and form the northern part of the main connector to the city.

Structural strategy response to unstable surface load bearing layer of ‘the sand island’ Chongming Island is the world's largest sand island, formed in 1300 years ago and changing constantly in topography till now. The shallow soil form lately, bearing large pores and high moisture content. So surface load bearing capacity is weak, vulnerable to the overall occurrence of land subsidence or collapse of buildings. Thus, we adopted a strategy: quality replacement method- replace the original base of the sand by the same quality of buildings to reduce damage to the load bearing layer caused by load change; at the same time, build a lump of reinforced layer structure to connect the up-ground and under-ground Buildings, acting as a mat foundation. The strategy reflects an inter-functional relation between the solid and the void.

Railway system becomes more important in city life, the stations play a role of its terminal. people evacuate from stations to city, go into the city through stations. In this view, railway stations are the enterances of the city. The site is an old station of 3# light rail, located arround by many residansial blocks and a school, making it a very busy station from morning to night. A high way east to the station also add noise to the site, the river of west blocks the evacuation of people. However, the river, on the other hand, providing this palce for relaxing.

To re-organize the station, the lively commercial space should be put aside not to entwine with transportation streamline. In addition, the station needs more entrances to decompose the congestion of the station. Eight entrances provide eight clearly options for people to access to the station in different levels. However, tradition stations only have two entrances at the top floor.

Three main squares at the site buffer the peak congestion in the morning and at evening, and they also provide as leisure parks for people during the daytime. The percentage of public area in the station is about 38%. And the commercial service is 21%.In fact, by our research, there just need little commercial service as the growing up of shopping online. And there is a trend to change a commercial shop to an entertainment room.

For people escaping from city lives, the building provides special spaces on the mountain, offering people a new experience with natural environment. The most special feature of the stacked triangles is the stagger terraces. It is what I called "between space", the shap-edged angles poking out of building form many terraces where people are surrounded by natural enviroment with fresh air and sunshine. People camp here to enjoy living outside city.
