LEAN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
Lean Product Development, or LPD, utilizes Lean principles to meet the ever-growing challenges of Product Development. Beginning with Allen Ward's study of the Toyota Production System, lean product development focus on reduction of long development cycle times, reducing the high costs of development, the need for more innovative solutions, reduction of production costs, redevelopment cycles. In this project, our goal is using this method to develop a refined v ers ion of the mite c lean ing v a cumm of CH IME I comp an y. By im prov ing the use r ex perience of the prod uct, we are ab le to distinguish it from the competitors and increase the market share.

COMPETITOR ANALYSIS Aside from understanding the flaws of the existing products and the user needs, we also inspected our position in the market. Thus, we compared our product's engineering characteristics and other parameters with products targeting similar users.
I. Basic Characteristics
II. Mite-Related Characteristics
I.

CHIMEI has the best rank in weight and capacity of the trash bin. However,it needed to cut down on the charging time. The engineering characteristics of CHIMEI related to mite-cleaning has no distinguished difference from its competitors.Lacking HEPA filter might be a great flaw since its the basic feature for similar products.

FINDING TRADE-OFF POINTS In the process of developing the new product, we must understand every aspects that influence the problem we are faced with. Thus,we drew a inter-relationship diagram. This would help us in the later decision-making process to find the trade-off points of current situation.
/ 19
INTER-RELATIONSHIP DIAGRAM
OUR STATEGIES Since we had our knowledge into the inter-relationship between all the design parameters, along side with the CUSTOMER VALUE ANALYSIS & COMPETITOR ANALYSIS, we could develope our strategies on what goals the new product should achieve. CUSTOMER VALUE ANALYSIS
COMPETITOR ANALYSIS
Improve the effect of mite-related function & create market segregation. Under the premise that the product should keep its light-weight advantage and not raising the cost, provide the cusomers with bigger suction power. Decrease the amount of floating dust when cleaning the filter & trash bin. Enhance the efficiency of the product-cleaning process. Provide handle that meets higher ergonomic standard. Make the user experience more labor-saving.

IDEA SKETCH Based on the strategies we made, we explored the solution from a variety of perspectives. As we were brainstorming, we also devoted ourselves into research about uid mechanics, mite biology, etc, in order to come up with ideas that were really appliable. During the three-week ideation process, the ideas were revised and interate every week, trying to meet the users' needs. Here are some of the works:

EXPERIMENTS & PROTOTYPE TESTING During the ideation process, we have conducted a series of experiment to validate our hyphothesis. Using lo-fi prototypes and quatitive data, we were able to test and modify our ideas in a short time.
UV Intesity

Brush Efficiency
/ 23
UV Intensity To enhance the energy intensity of UV light (which is used in the product to kill the mites) reaching the surface of the bed, we have came up with the idea that adding a curved aluminium pad behind the light tube.Measured with the light intensity measuring instrument, the data shows that the total intensity increases by 20%.
Handel Ergonomic In order to make the handle meet a higher standard of ergonomic, we have made 3 different types of handle and invited users to give a score on each form based on comfortability. The result shows that type b has the highest score.
a
b
c
Brush Efficinecy UV light can only reach the mites on the surface of the mattress, thus, the vibrating brush does the job to get the mites that hide deelpy inside the mattress out.The experiment studied that if changes in the amount of brush & the spiral intensity could improve the efficiency of the brush.
We measured the time the brush forced the post-it notes to come off form the board.

3D MODELING & FEATURES MAIN FEATURES
Effortless to Open To clean the trash bin & filter, simply press the button and rotate the bin. It does not only save effort but also make the dust coming out from the bin much less.
D-Shape Junction The unique shape of the junction of every assembel part makes it easy for user to attatch everything in the right direction.
/ 25
Ergonomics The shape of the handle and the angle between t h e v a c uu m a n d f l o o r is measured to meet ergonomic standards.
Side Vents The vents are set at the two sides of the vacuum instead of at the bottom to prevent mites/dust being blown into the air from the surface of the item being cleaned.

Metrophobia
Stage Design for TEDxTainan 2017 Conference @ NCKU
I
was in the Department of Spatial Design from 2017 to 2018. In this team, our job is to visualize the ideas TEDx trying to convey the short talks, translating them into stage design or exhibition design. In this project, our team tried to capture the spirit of the theme of the conference - Metrophobia, and design a stage set for it. This is a relatively large-scale project and I have learned a lot of practical experience in woodworking and stage lighting.

CREATING THE CITY
Building the Miniature City Since it was a large installation and we needed to build up the set in 24 hours. We have premanufacured every single strucure and the arrangement was simulated in the computer. On the day on the conference, me and my team gave instruction on how to assemble everything and create the right pattern of the radiating strings. This was a great experience to see our design being built by so many hands!

FOODIE ROOKIE
Combining Board Game with Traditional Taiwanese Cuisine
W
e became archeologists in this project, digging through the rich history of the food culture of Tainan. The field of design has a lot of different aspects. This time, the product we designed is more like trying to tell its users a story then solve a problem. With the topic "jiou jia tsia" ( ), a classic of traditional local cuisine yet slowly being forgotten by the young generation, we created a game combined with the process of cooking , inviting the young people join an advanture in the good old times.

WHAT IS JUO JIA TSIA? Juo Jia Tsia is a food culture that dates back to the days of Qing Dynasty, when there were a lot of dinners rose from the harbor area - Anping, for example - and they are often linked with prostitution industry. The food served in these dinners lately evolved into the Juo Jia Tsia we know these days. What's special about this type of food that is is often cooked for hours, so long that all the ingrediants become soft and pulpy. It often come with several appitizers, stir-fries, and the classic main dishes.
CASE STUDY : A-MEI DINNER A-Mei Dinner is one the oldest restaurant that still serves the cuisine the old way. We have visited the resaurant and tasted the authentic Jiuo Jia Tsia ouselves. We also interviewed the owner of it to understand more about the history. We also record what we saw in the resaurant, from the interior design, furniture, tableware..., everything that may inspire our design.
/ 67
MAKING THE OLD NEW Our goal is to make youngsters being aquainted with this culture. We decided to start with the most possible scenario for our persona :
Jia-Rou
Young people don't want to go to the resaurant to eat a lot of foods. It takes hours to defreeze the food.
Accountant, 25 years old
Existing Survice : Frozen Food Pack of Juo Jia Tsia
What if we make the waiting-for-defreezing process into a game? What if the game is right on the package? What if the game help the user learn the culture? Multiple players, share the experience & culture
USER
Jia-Rou was born and raised in Tainan then moved to Taipei for work. She loves trying new stuff with her freinds. Sometimes she missed the taste of hometown when she felt homesick in the big city. She always wishes to have a chance visit the famous Jiou Jia Tsia resaurant that her father has always talked about.

FOODIE ROOKIE !
BACK TO THE 1960s ENJOY THE FOOD, ENJOY THE PLAY! Foodie Rookie allows you to take a nostalgia trip back into the culture of JUO JIA TSIA while at the same time, taste the good old taste.
SPIN THE TABLE! Use an utensil as your " dice", and spin it on the campass in the middle. The number being pointed when it stopped is the steps you go. The compass also decides which "event" happens when player stops at "the steering wheel of the fate".
FOODIE ROOKIE is a food package + board game desgined for those who live a modern lifestyle yet wish to learn more about the food culture of Tainan. The story is based on the Taiwan society in the 1960s , the players can attain a lot of knowledge of the history and lifestyle back them through the game.
COLLECT THE MEAL Each player starts with 2 points, earning more during the game. The points can be used to purchase the cuisine of Juo Jia Tsia. The first player who finishes collecting all categories wins the game.
CHARACTERS The players play as different characters in the game - from the successor of the dinner to the hostess who has a secret lover. The characters are those who were active in the 1960s. Each character has its unique ability to use throughout the game.
/ 69
VISUAL DESIGN The visual design of this board game is a mix of vintage elements, inspired by the prited matters from the old times and the color is screen-printed.
Foodie Rookie being exhibited in the ASIR ART MUSEUM
What I learned the most throughout the project is to go deeply into the spirit of one culture and translate it into something that rises awareness among the people and in turn makes an eort to preserve the heritage. This is one of the diverse aspects of design.

n t h e s e c o n d s e m e s t e r o f s o p h o m o r e y e a r, I joine d a 2-month pr ojec t of d esigning a AI robot & sur v ice system for the elderly people. I have cooperated with students not only from the department of industrial design, but also with electrical engineering and inforamtion engineering background. This is the first time I tried my hands in designing a product with engineers. During the process, I have learned the importance of clear communication with people from different fields and the integration of new technology and user needs.

DEFINING THE PROBLEM The goal of this project is to connect the technologhy with user's needs. In an intense one-day design workshop, our team has interviewed several elderly people to quickly grasp the user's needs. Next, we made a quick lo-ďŹ prototype to test our concept and modify it based on users' feedback.

OUR CONCEPT We want to make the AI robot not just a helper, but the elderly can also take care of the robot. Therefore, we decided to make the robot have some plant-like quialities. This decision is based on the user analysis that a lot of elderly people love to take care of plants.
TOOLS With limited time and cost, the result would be more like a pilot model than a mature product. In terms of engineering, the tools we used included Arduino & Raspberry Pi.
/ 73
MAKING THE PILOT MODEL This is the ďŹ rst time I cooperated with team members from the engineering department. It turned out making the robot come alive was not an easy job. Things like mechanism, where the sensors should be installed, etc, must be considered. Though the process was met with a lot of obsticles, our team worked hard together to make our "child" born!

INTRODUCING LUCKY Lucky is an accompanying AI robot designed for the elderly. It oers a variety of service including entertainment, providing information, deep conversation. With its friendly plant/pet appearence and behavior, Lucky is sure to bring joy to your life!
Concept Scenario
WHAT CAN LUCKY DO? Just like every plant, if you put a light source close enough it will be happy ! LCD screen that makes Lucky being able to change its expression.
Both its leaves and "hands" can wave to show emotion.
Command is voicecontrolled. Super easy for the elderly. Never worry about reading words from the screen.
