Time : seven weeks from March 2022 to May 2022 Location : Guangzhou, China Instructor : Sun Wei Guo

The design is based on the location in the historical old city area of Guangzhou. It attempts to utilize the small-scale streets and alleys to create diver se touring paths, drawing inspiration from the surrounding lanes to enhance the local character. Facing the Wen Tower and Lychee Bay, flexible cur ved designs are employed to define the boundaries, further revitalizing the Wen Tower and the watercourse. This allows people to experience the charm of wandering through streets and alleys within the museum, triggering a resonance with the history and culture of the Lingnan area.

04 Social Research Report "SMALL ORDERS, QUICK TURNAROUND" SUPPLY CHAIN MODEL: A STUDY OF SHEIN'S GARMENT INDUSTRY IN URBAN VILLAGES

Time : eight weeks from April 2023 to July 2023 Location : Guangzhou, China Instructor : Fei Yan

In just three years, the fast-fashion crossborder e-commerce platform Shein, of ten referred to as the "Chinese ZARA," has emerged as the fourth-largest unicorn globally with a valuation of 450 billion RMB in 2023. The key to this colossal rise lies in Shein's "Small Orders, Quick Turnaround" supply chain model, a model actively operating in numerous garment industry clusters in urban villages. This prompts us to ponder: How is a unicorn worth hundreds of billions supported by many "old and dilapidated" urban villages? Through research on the typical "Shein village" in Tangbu East Village, we discovered that the Shein supply chain model involves the collaboration of the "front-end headquarters – mid-end industrial park suppliers – end-point garment workshops" trio. Building on this foundation, we fur ther investigated the spatial characteristics of the garment industry within the village, the temporal patterns of garment workers' activities, and the alignment between the supply chain model and spatial features. Finally, considering Shein's future development trends and the "urban renewal" p o l i c i e s f o r u r b a n v i l l a g e s , w e p ro p o s e d optimization suggestions for the development of the garment industry.

n “Shein” is a Chinese domestic cross-border e-commerce platform, primarily focusing on fast fashion for women. It mainly targets international consumer markets such as Europe, America, and the Middle East. Its distinctive feature is the 'small orders, quick turnaround' supply chain. n In competition with fast fashion companies such as ZARA and Uniqlo, Shein successfully topped the list of e-commerce shopping apps in the United States in 2022. n In the United States, Shein's total revenue surged from 7% in 2020 to 30% in 2022, marking four consecutive years of profitability. In 2022, it achieved a record revenue of 22.7 billion USD. n Shein embarked on a rapid growth trajectory from 2020 to 2021. Subsequently, from 2021 to 2022, it achieved a valuation of 400 billion, securing its position among the top five global unicorns. By 2023, with a valuation of 450 billion, it ranked as the fourth largest unicorn globally.

limited market testing

n The market size is shrinking The global economic downturn, coupled with the impact of the pandemic, has dealt a blow to the global apparel market, leading to a significant reduction in market size. n Traditional brands are in decline Many traditional clothing brands are gradually exiting the historical stage due to insufficient supply chain resilience and outdated marketing methods. n Low-cost fast fashion has become a new consumer trend. The apparel market is increasingly pursuing the delivery of clothing at cheaper prices and in shorter time frames to consumers. The current dominant trend in new consumer preferences leans towards fast fashion, continuously gaining more market share. n The traditional professional market urgently needs transformation and upgrading In the pursuit of 'cheaper, faster, and more fashionable' consumer preferences, traditional specialized markets are no longer meeting the demands of new consumer trends. Many long-standing professional markets are almost all facing the same question: whether to adapt or relocate. If not relocating, how should they adapt?

2.1 Adaptive Space for Shein Target Suppliers - Urban Villages

2.2.2 Nancun Town's distribution of garment industry spaces

According to Shein's requirements for target suppliers, it is evident that the primary suppliers are small and micro-enterprises. Due to the influence of the South Da-Gang Line on the southern side, the industrial space presents a circular structure relative to the South Da-Gang Line. The garment factories in the industrial park are mid-to-high-end production line garment factories, while the garment factories in the urban village are low-end, family-style workshop garment factories.

3.3 Industrial Park Spatial Characteristics 3.3.1 Overview of Industrial Park Tangbu East Village Industrial Park is located in the southern part of Tangbu East Village. Initially, the area was farmland, but later it was collectively developed by the village into an industrial park. The total area of the industrial park is approximately 24 hectares, with a total of 6 industrial parks housing 249 companies. The majority of these are factories related to the clothing industry. In addition to traditional factory spaces, the industrial park also includes many transformed garment factories, including those renovated for science and technology innovation zones and cultural and creative block transformations. The speculated reason for this transformation is likely the prosperity of the garment industry, making it challenging for other industries to survive. The factories within the industrial park have strong clothing production capabilities. Taking Guangzhou Genius Apparel Co., Ltd., one of Xiyin's suppliers, as an example, its daily production capacity reaches up to 18,000 pieces, with a monthly output of up to 500,000 pieces.

Shein Supplier Manager Common Demands Shein has set extremely high production speed and design update requirements, as well as strict and detailed system management and accountability systems. However, it has also brought stable and substantial orders, providing considerable profits for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Sustain the Garment Village Industry

Shein has relatively high entry barriers, but compared to large-scale factories, private small factories may still find it achievable. However, whether investing in the necessary costs to improve one's own scale and quality is worthwhile is something small-scale operators need to carefully consider.

Garment Workers

Take orders, 500 pieces per order, complete 36 orders daily, totaling 18,000 pieces, distribute orders to 18 home-based workshops. Complete garment processing, ironing, inspection, and packaging on days 7-9, and return to Shein headquarters.

4.4 Attitudes and Demands of the Garment Workers in Tangbu East Village.

Dispatch orders through the online management platform.

Shein has higher production requirements and shorter working hours, but for workers who have been engaged in the garment industry for a long time, this change may not be significant. Shein introduces more stable orders into the market, providing more work and more substantial wages.

Facing Contradictions The decrease in garment profits The overall decrease in orders

South Mainline Auxiliary Lane

Through in-depth interviews with Guangzhou Guinness Clothing Co., Ltd., the complete supply chain process can be summarized as follows: Orders are received through the Shein online management platform, with order quantities ranging from 100 to 500 pieces. These orders are outsourced to over a dozen family workshops they regularly collaborate with. The head processing workshop is connected with the tail processing workshop, and the tail processing workshop collaborates with the ironing workshop. Typically, each worker can process approximately 100 pieces per day. The semi-finished products are delivered to the next stage the following day, and within 3-5 days, the factory completes garment processing, ironing, packaging, and other procedures. The final products are then submitted to Shein headquarters, and the entire process can be completed within 7-9 days.

SHEIN

The garment industry urgently needs upgrading Tangbu East Village's garment industry can fully utilize the clothing production resources in Panyu area, completing the entire garment manufacturing process. With the progress of urban redevelopment, the land value in urban villages changes, and the garment industry urgently needs upgrading.

Satisfying the development needs of garment workers

Tangbu East Village, as an urban village, has a low residential quality, deficiencies such as fire safety hazards and poor infrastructure, which are not conducive to the long-term development of garment workers, especially the younger generation. It can only serve as a temporary workplace. In the future, it will face competition pressure from new industries and new models.

Conclusion 1: Spatial Characteristics of the Garment Industry in Tangbudong Village

The spatial layout pattern of "Shein Headquarters - Industrial Park - Family Workshops" aligns with the production process of garment manufacturing. Shein Headquarters sends orders to suppliers within the industrial park through an online platform. The suppliers, upon receiving the orders, outsource the production to long-term collaborating family workshops. Family workshops typically handle the head and tail processing stages and return semi-finished products to the suppliers within the industrial park. The suppliers then complete the garment manufacturing process and return the finished products to Shein.

Feature 2: The industrial park exhibits the characteristics of "efficient streamline organization + clear functional zoning." co

The factories within the industrial park possess strong garment production capabilities. In addition to requiring a high level of standardization in production workshops, Shein also demands efficient production, quality assurance, and timely feedback from suppliers. This is reflected in the efficient streamline organization and clear functional layout. For example, suppliers conduct detailed functional delineation of the entire production workshop, separately planning areas for production, processing, office, and auxiliary functions for effective management.

Feature 3: Family workshops exhibit the characteristics of "dispersed along the road + small-scale gathering of diverse businesses + small scale + combined production and residential functions." The road network within the urban village is complex, but family workshops choose to be distributed along main roads for ease of transportation. Moreover, there is a diverse range of businesses that are distributed nearby, forming a relatively complete garment industry chain within a 70m diameter range. Regarding individual buildings, they are typically transformed from residential spaces into production spaces. As a result, the production space is small in scale, and there is a high degree of integration with residential and other living functions. Usually, the ground floor is used for production space, while the upper floors are designated for living spaces.

Conclusion 2: The "small, quick, and fast-return" supply chain model aligns well with the matching of people, time, and space.

Firstly, the operating costs of small-scale production spaces in urban villages are low. Therefore, family workshops can take on small orders that might appear unprofitable for larger factories. Secondly, due to the limited space in these small-scale production areas, family workshops cannot have a large workforce. Additionally, the small-scale space limits the size of transportation vehicles, and the lower standardization level in production, making them suitable for handling small orders.

This leads us to ponder whether the approach of "onesize-fits-all" demolition and reconstruction, as well as the forced relocation and development of industries in urban village redevelopment, has to some extent disrupted the naturally formed market dynamics and destroyed the most vibrant innovation vitality. Looking at the Shein case, we believe that the market dynamics of urban villages are highly valuable. In the process of urban redevelopment, we hope to collaborate through the efforts of the government, enterprises, and villagers. While improving the spatial quality and management level of urban villages, we aim to preserve the market dynamics and create a more business-friendly market environment for entrepreneurship and employment.。

Villager

A market environment more conducive to entrepreneurship and employment

In our research, we deeply perceive that Shein, through digitalized supply chain management, is driving traditional small workshops to transform into agile and flexible "quick return factories." Currently, Shein is preparing for its IPO, and in the future, there The higher efficiency and quality will be higher requirements for efficiency and quality in requirements for Shein's IPO clothing production. In our research, we also found that both markets and workshop factories have many issues Transformation and Upgrading The Humanistic Care for Garment that need optimization and upgrading. of Traditional Industries Industry Employment Zone Renewal + Functional Transformation + Digital Upgrade

Firstly, Tangbudong Village itself has excellent transportation and location advantages. It is within a 15-minute drive to Zhongda Fabric Market and a 3-minute drive to Shein Headquarters. Secondly, within the urban village, a complete industrial chain can be formed within a 70m radius. Family workshops can complete the handover of goods for each production stage within 2 minutes. Most importantly, garment workers have an average daily working duration of 14 hours, working continuously with high efficiency and dedication.

educational support

In order to achieve a certain production scale, suppliers need to accept as many small orders distributed by Shein as possible. They then outsource the accumulated large order quantities to family workshops within the urban village. This supply-demand relationship results in a high number of closely clustered family workshops within the village. Additionally, within the industrial park, space is highly intensively utilized, where a single production building can gather dozens of garment industry enterprises.

Matching 2: "Multiple orders" match the high-density clustering of garment industry co spaces.

Through research, we deeply understand that Shein is not attracted by government investment promotion, but an outstanding entrepreneur. It has grown naturally in the soil of the market economy, appearing simple yet powerful. The fact that a unicorn enterprise worth hundreds of billions is supported by the market forces of several urban villages seems to once again overturn 第五章 our conventional impression of urban villages – seemingly a "cancer" in the city, but possessing the most open and free market soil and 总结与展望 innovative nutrients.

as a "low-end industry" but should undergo innovation that keeps pace with the times to promote the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries, playing a role in aggregation and traction.

Additionally, in interviews, we observed that the majority of clothing industry workers face survival challenges such as high temporary work mobility, laborious business operations with inadequate social security, and imbalance in public services. We hope to address these issues by focusing on ensuring fair rights and achieving spatial justice, providing them with more humane care.
