After the Opium War in 1840, Western capitalism invaded China and established factories in China, which was the beginning of China's modern industry. In May 1890, the Qing court agreed to Zhang Zhidong's plan to build an iron factory. In August 1891, the infrastructure construction of the Hanyang Iron Works officially started and was completed on October 22, 1893. In May 1894, Hanyang Iron Works opened a blast furnace for iron making - Hanyang Iron Factory, presided over by Zhang Zhidong, a famous official in the late Qing Dynasty, is the first modern steel complex integrating iron smelting, steelmaking and steel rolling in China and even Asia.
