Design for Change

As food security becomes a big concern in modern city life, the demand for organic, healthy local food as a social need makes us reconsider our eating habits and food-related rituals. Urban agriculture is a way to help alleviate environmental impact and provide food security while bolstering communities with venues for social interaction and education. This thesis proposes to use secular rituals as a catalyst to improve urban agriculture as a meaningful green infrastructure in reframing urban public spaces.

In this project, the existing site is an under-used, fragmented grassland located right behind the gate of Central South University of Forestry and Technology. It is important for the design objectives to incorporate not only a proper physical form to highlight the cultural identity of the University, but to provide the adequate space for various campus activities to take place.
