STAGE OF LIFE Studio project, solo work Time: March - May, 2016 Location: 125th street and Fifth Avenue, Manhattan Instructor: Severino Alfonso Dunn @ Barnard, Columbia The building for redesign: National Black Theater (NBT), which is located at the corner of 5th avenue and 125th street, is a essential point for the whole community of Harlem. According to Barbara Ann Teer, the establisher of NBT, it is the second home away from home for Harlem community. As a result, creating an open public space for people to gather is an effective way to make interpersonal interactions in a community. People can relax in those peaceful and comfortable platforms and stairs for free. They can hang out with friends, meet new people and wander around spaces while enjoying the sunshine that comes through large glass walls.
OPEN SPACES SITE ANALYSIS OF NBT SITE ANALYSIS OF OPEN NBTSPACES
MANHATTAN
From examples gained from Manhattan’s map, open space for Program X is formed gradually. From analysis of public elements like stations, restaurants and shops, we can observe why people would like to go to NBT’s neighborhood, or what is absent for attracting people. According to site analysis, the definition of OPEN SPACE is an open area which contains ecology, recreation and aesthetic value, while at the same time can hold a group of people for activities.

? The two boxes above represent the programs and intersect in many different ways. Four scenarios of the boxes interacting are pictured on the right. However, there are still many elements that could be added up to form multiple results. What will these elements look like in a new theater, and what role will they play in space? The scenarios will be described according to following five controls.

The intersecting parts of different programs are called "MAGIC BOXES". With glass wall blocking two spaces, the public can see what is happening across t h a t t ra n s p a r e n t w i n d o w – performances, the reaction of audiences, interior of programs and even can hear sounds through glass wall. However, people can’t fully experience the atmosphere that is specifically designed for the program. The only way to experience that is to become the actual audience. In this sense, the MAGIC BOX is a bridge that connect the public to the NBT.

When observors become the audience, their roles are reversed. The stairs and the complicated circulation are also created for public spaces, so when you walk through them and watch others, you are actually the one being watched. Life is a stage; everyone is both the audience and a performer.

SHADOW RHYTHM Summer studio project, solo work Time: July - Aug, 2016 Location: 184st, Overlook Terrace, New York Instructor: Emauel Admassu @ GSAPP Located at 184st, Overlook Terrace, New York, sits above the rocks. Use shadow patterns to show how they would alter with time and location. Hybridize shadow patterns and signage to explore the influence of architecture that would be experienced on the site. Imagine when one interacts with various experiences of sunlight through linear spaces, how about having the company of its favorite music to make being in the building a multisensory experience -- an record store would be a perfect option. Pick a disk, have a seat according to preference of the type of sunlight, or even play instrument with others.
DOCUMENTATION The best method of documentation is studying at the field. Document the movement of shadow patterns roughly every 30 minutes.

It is a place for various ideas and perspectives to interact and communicate. As a result, intraditional programs like meditation, workshops and wander paths can be new strategy for inspiring visitors. The library -- Knowledge Island is located in downtown area of a city called Shaoxing in south of China near Shanghai. The short distance to adjcent institutes like my college, Shaoxing University, and Luxun Elementary school determines a large number of visitors are students. [UN]FOLD Fall studio project, solo work Time: Sep - Dec, 2017 Instructor: Jack Ryan @ RISD Start with a letter-size paper, fold them back and forth to get the shuttle. Drop them from high to observe its behavior. Map the fall and translate into the shuttle maker's house. As for translation strategy, I extend pleating lines in the shuttle to the boundary of the given site. And then use the folding strategy to get stairs, furnitures, floors, walls, opennings and facades. As for circulation, the ground floor is the maker's entrance and the second one is visitors' and gallery. On the third floor, a outdoor terrace is located and a meeting point of public and private circulation is at the boundary of the terrace. Along the central spiral staircase, the shuttle maker can enter his private studio through the open studio where he can interact with the public who want to know more about the shuttle. SYLLABUS DESIGN
I developed this 4-day introduction-ofarchitecture seminar in 2017. I got the chance to teach Japanese high school students in Japan last summer with other 10 college students from top schools around the world. The whole process is really challenaging but full of fun and it is one of the pivotal point in my life when I realize there're plenty fun things outside of the architecture world for me.
