CAVE AS A
LIVELY SCHOO
Hidden and disused, the Kingston Cave represents an uncomfortable dichotomy between Kingston’s history of industrial extraction and its Hudson River aesthetics. Our proposal establishes a shared schoolyard within the cave that publicizes its unique setting as well as its marred history. Youth education programs attempt to recontextualize the human activity within the site.

MAGIC TIMELINE
Readpted as a mushroom farm and served a national supply chain for Campbell and Heinz 1935 - 1960
The map shows within numerous limestone mines, the mushroom farm generated a local and natianwide networks to fuction its supply chain
TRACE OF NETWORKS
With extensive and complicated networks, the urban context boundary is far beyond sight
The 5-acre averagely 20-ft tall cave situated at the mouth of roundout creek which was an important transportation route for industries along the sides. The Kingston Cave is hidden beneath two parks, one of which, Hasbrouck Park, was the first urban park built in Kingston. With massive and evenly distributed pillars supporting the ceiling, the space once was extracted as a limestone mine and readpted as a mushroom farm as shown in the plan. There are two entrances and a large body of water.
THE FOOT(PRINT)
Vignettes showing activities related to mining period with specific tools and processes. During this time, child labour especially orphans were abused for the purpose of mining. A great number of children died inside of the mine.
ADVENTU IN THE CA
Vignettes showing activities related to mushroom farming period with specific shape of tools and processes of planting, packaging and loading. For growing mushrooms, the Knaust brothers even invented a specific air-condition system to keep stable temperature and humidity.

One of the main focuses of the design is creating various ways of connection between the park surface above and the cave area below while reimaging the extraction of soils in between -- a sandwich design indeed. Different youth playful programs in the park correspond with innovative programs in the underground cave. LIFE-LO INTERA
In terms of library, gaining knowledge should not only from reading alone but from interaction with people and objects. So BOOKXTOPIA's spatial concept starts with two space interact with each other and the overlay becomes a void for the outdoor garden. Seven voids that layout as an X on the plan are surrounded by a continuous meandering path for people to experience the building from the ground floor to the top. For the layers of spaces, the more towards the center, the more porous the boundaries are, the more collective the spaces are. If you want to learn how to cook, grab a book and read about cooking, or go to lectures and ask people around, or simply walk into the kitchen workshop area and learn through making.
