I am designing a 2.3km urban green corridor along Powells Creek that addresses the issues of how to reshape powells creek to improve urban ecological and visual amenity , by means of through a series of urban improvements to the Powells Creek. The Powells creek can be integrated into the local environment, Designing from the visual point of view in the day and night, forming the edge of creek that can provide a relaxing and movable living space for the surrounding residents while attracting visitors to the area. So this is an immersive and engaging space.

It is the perfect centrepiece for a slow journey for respite and to show the visual changes.

Site history In the 1930s Canalisation of Powells Creek and Saleyards Creek in the 1930s affected salinity and pollution levels in nearby tidal wetlands.

The City of Canada Bay called for community responses to the Powells Creek Renewal Project, that intended to improve the appearance of the creek upstream of the confluence with Saleyards Creek.

While all the spaces are linear in shape, diverse spatial experiences are created by applying different materials, scales, topography, and programs.

The design of the Terraces river edge precinct – located at the epicenter of Christchurch’s revitalization – transforms Oxford Terrace from a conventional street into a 2 km shared-use city promenade that replaces cars with pedestrian priority, cycling and the integration of a new tram circuit. This unique city promenade and edge condition provide the catalyst for Christchurch to turn and face the river and the critical connecting element for the Avon River Park’s sequence of public realm experiences.

To principle design exploration one, I think adding new types of rain gardens on both sides of roads and creek is necessary. The dashed blue arrows on the map represent water from nearby Mason wetlands that can be piped into the powells creek. I do this by planting trees with pit around the lawn through which rainwater is collected.

By reshaped the powells creek bank edge, I have designed the elements to interactively combine water, plants and people.

Represents the change of the green corridor around the Powells Creek after a certain period

At the beginning, the vegetation community did not become a system, because of the solar exposure, the groundwater and the surface water could not be adequately stored. Vegetation community can evaporate through photosynthesis, releasing oxygen but cannot infiltract and storage water.

In the middle stage, as vegetation community began to increase and gradually became a system, birdsgradually increased, vegetation could evaporate through normal photo synthesis, release oxygen, and infiltrate into underground water to store the water resources.

Later, as the vegetation community as formed into a large green corridor, the biodiversity increased. Gradually become wetland, vegetation can evaporate through photo synthesis, release oxygen, infiltrate underground water to store water resources, and can purify water quality and collect.

For Exploration 2, Because this is a visual journey, the location of the lights is particularly important; it can be in the water, under a tree, in the distance but shining on a landmark. Since it is possible to open up more space and interest by varying the space above and below, I changed the terrain by cut and fill to make the road and bike to on the upper level which near the bank sides.
