01

With global climate change, numerous costal cities all over the world are threated by sea level rise. Boston is one of them that urge to seek a best way to solve the problem. Borrowing from the theoretical strategies, precedents and combining Boston’s own specific landfill history as well as urban characteristic, this project provides a new, optional strategy that changes the relationship between the water and city. By changing the landform through filling, cutting and connecting the existing land, Boston will become a new urban archipelago that adapts with sea level rise in the future as well as thrive new dynamic harbor life response to need of surrounding community.a green infrastructure and brings new vitality to the whole city.

Research Question How can Boston adapt to sea level rise in a way that extends its landmaking history to redefine the relationship between water and city?

Research Context Climate is changing. Increasing temperature causes the rise of sea level and further threatens most coastal cities in the world. Boston is one of those cities that urgently needs innovative approach to deal with sea level rise

South Boston Waterfront Site Anlysis

Having synthetically analyzed the landfill history, flooding condition and shoreline condition, South Boston Waterfront has been chosen as the tested neighborhood.

Master Plan

Since sea level rising is a continues process, it is unpredicted and shift through time, a series of diagrams are developed to illustrate the process of filling and cutting in each sea level rise moment. Each movement is based on the prediction of flooding situation from 1 foot to 7 feet. First submerged region will be protected firstly.

Flowing Land

Urban park design in new city zone Location: Haerbin, Heilongjiang Province, China Date: 04/2012-06/2012 Tutor: Jinshi Zhang& Guo Wei Project Description:

" Landscape architecture is the design on the land" Topography is the key element of a design, in this project, topo is designed like sculpture. By combing with the function of stormwater collection and various space experience, the garden plays a role as a green infrastructure and brings new vitality to the whole city. 09

Concept- Dune

Master Plan

The concept of Nantuo Park comes from dune, which has beautiful shape that can bring both visual enjoyment and different experiences of space. People can walk through those curves of the hills. Sometimes they go up to the hills, sometimes they go down to the ground, thus everyone who visit the park will enjoy the changing scenery and the flowing land. What's more, in the south of the park, I use a earth covered construction in order to ensure functions without destroying the terrain at the same time.

TRAFFIC SYSTEM

In this project, terrain is the key of design element. Different terrain form different traffic system, including garden road, high altitude corridor, waterfront road and footbridge. Besides, different terrain can forme different seasonal changing landscape. In sunny days, the fields without water can be used by most people, while in the rainy days, most fields are covered by rainwater and people can only walk on the footbridges and high altitude corridors to enjoy the view of the rain.

Urban Green Infrustructure

Chracteristics of Water Flow SURFACE RUNOFF This part of water mainly come from the rainfall. Since the sur face of city's ground is mostly rigid pavement, little rain will infiltrates and a large amount of water during rainy days will lead to many problems.

URBAN PIPELINE SYSTEM City residents' living water will be t ra n s p o r te d by p i p e l i n e s. Af te r t re at m e nt of sewage treatment plant, the water will finally emissions into the rivers.

COLLECTION

By setting green open ditch with treatment plants on the waysides, the rainwater and living water will be collected and preliminary filtered.

RECYCLE The water that be collec ted in the open ditch will be recycled in the garden. Some of it will be discharged into the lake, others will be reused as landscape water like fountain.

Grow and Spread

Use Nantuo park as the center, set green open ditches in communities, on the streets, The new city will finally covered by green lands and the park will work as a green infrastructure.

Amphitheater Design in Allerton Park Location: Monticello, Illinois, US Date: 10/2014-12/2014 Tutor: M. Elen Deming Project Description:

It is hard to determine which has a greater effect on the soul-music or nature. In this project, two amphitheaters are designed for two music styles: blue grass and jazz. By thinking about the materials and their change in diverse seasons and weathers, the amphitheaters can create the atmosphere of music during the music festival and merge in surrounding environment after that.
