W.A. RETREAT MIXUSE BUILDING Semester 2, 2015 Individual Work

The brief calls for a multipurpose building to accommodate a hotel and headquarters for two selected DSIGs and my own architectural practise in 2045, including gallery, seminar rooms and necessary facilities. Location: 113 Batman Street, West Melbourne Selected DSIGs: Yoga Association, National Association of Visual Arts

FORM MAKING PROCESS

W.A. RETREAT

Aims to create a space which can lead users to feel like they are living under water and walking in air simultaneously, reflecting on human's irresistible wish to live in unusual space and land resource scarcity. In order to create a space “under water, the building is designed to incorporate as much water as possible, specially in the facade structure. For the facade, it is a double skin facade system which has a outer layer with PV curtain wall system and an internal layer with a water wall system. Incorporating with the glass bottom rooftop pool, the caustics lighting effects can create the atmosphere that would be ablle to make users think they are under water. And to realize the idea of walking in air, I design the transparent corridor which crossing over the atrium in the first four levels. The system consists of transparent balustrade and solid concrete steps and ramp to secure the load bearing capacity and the transparent balustrade is made of aerogel which is a supermaterial with strong load bearing capacity and transparency. And the building suggests a circulation that travelling from exterior to interior and back exterior and interior again, letting people to fell the fluidity in air.

HOTEL RESIDENTIAL TYPICAL HOTEL GUEST ROOM

1:50 HOTEL GUEST ROOM LAYOUT

The hotel guest bedroom enjoys highest level of privacy in the building. Users can choose to expose theirselves to the surrealistic atrium via their balcony in the room, which can allow them to "float in air" and "under water" simultenously. Also, the water wall facade is designed to create caustics lighting in every bedroom to emphasize the "under water" atmosphere. Furniture follows the fluidity of the building as well.

FACADE SYSTEM

TYPICAL FACADE GLAZING COATING

It is a double skin facade system which has a outer layer with PV curtain wall system and an internal layer with a water wall system, as shown in the typical wall detail drawing. Switchable glazing panels are installed for the water wall system to increase the flexibility between private and open as well as HAVC aspects.

URBAN STRATEGY PROPOSAL

SITE ANALYSIS AND PROPOSAL

Part of Batman Street is taken to recreate a natural centre for the building and surrounding residents, which allows plants to grow over wall to attract people. It is to recall the nature and to create a corresponding interaction with Flagstaf Garden. In the end, it is designed to emphasize and reflect on human's greed over all these 30 years.

TREE PAVILION Pavilion Semester 1, 2015 Individual Work

The brief focuses on exploring parametric and computational design via Grasshopper and its associated plug-in programs, which leads us to challenge conventional design thinking and social norms. It is facilitated by digital fabrication to foresee innovative design future. Location: Egan Reserve, Coburg, Merri Creek

EAST PERSPECTIVE

TREE PAVILION

Tree Pavillion aims to become an experiement and observation space for surrounding residents and potential tourists to witness how human behavior has interrupted nature. It would show pavilion's impact on embraced trees as controlling and reducing sunlight received by the tree with the specially coated panels. The coating on panels can block sunlight from transmitting through.

GRADUAL CHANGES OF EMBRACED TREES Embraced trees are expected to grow slowlier than unimpacted trees at first, then tend to relative obvious height differences. At the end, they would wither away.

3D PRINT MASS MODEL

The key to computational design is to realize the digital model into practical physical structure which can fulfill load bearing capacity requirement and the key to assemble the physical is the joint. After experiements with prototypes of different joint proposal, the photos show the final potential joint that can achieve required angles.

BLURHOUSE Boathouse Semester 2, 2014 Individual Work

Studio water aims to redesign the existing boathouse in Yarra Bend Park, learning from the outstanding German architect Mies van der Rohe, whose style can be summarised into simplicity, functionality and materiality. Master: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Location: Studley Park, Yarra Bend park, Melbourne

Blurhouse emphasized the materiality of cutting-edge material-Aerogel, which is super load bearing capacity and tranlucence. Following Mies' spirit in simplicity and horizontality, Blurhouse is designed to maximise interior space and bluring the edge between exterior and interior in order to propose a new relationship between human and architecture.
