Art Exhibition A tribute to conceptual artist Sol LeWitt
Overview Sol LeWitt: Irrational Art and Rational Mind is a game-like experiential exhibition designed based on artist Sol LeWitt’s ideas and artworks, which pays tribute to his influence in the conceptual art field. There are no actual art pieces from the artist in this exhibition, but by using technology along with environmental graphics, there will be interactives, installations and environments built to showcase the artist, his ideas and his works in game-like experiential ways. By including new interactive activities in an art exhibition, visitors will be able to participate in the creative thinking process in an impressive and fun way.

Geometric Shapes Sol LeWitt reduced art to a few of the most basic shapes, colors and types of lines, and organized them by guidelines he felt in the end free to bend. Gallery Geometric Shapes is built based on these drawing ideas and uses a more interactive way for audience to understand his works. Through games, visitors can put their own bodies into the experience, read the artist’s thoughts, or browse his works through their own perspectives.
Wall Drawing 552D is a part of the body of wall drawings presenting a figure the artist described as “not quite a cube.” Despite their volumetric appearance, these forms adhere as much to the idea of flatness as Sol LeWitt’s linear geometries.
Discover Geometric Shapes
In the early 1990s Sol LeWitt created a series of wall drawings depicting ‘continuous forms.’ By repeatedly rotating the isometric forms, the artist created the planar facets that characterize the ‘continuous forms.’

Interactive 2 Architecture & Painting
By playing with the interactive game: color-coding the bands to ensure no two bands of the same color touch, visitors will be able experience the process of making wall drawings: the draftsmen color-coded the bands with post-it notes before applying paint to the wall. Despite the color-coding, a few squares of the same color ended up touching and had to be painted over.
By playing with the interactive waves, visitors will be able to create their own paintings inside the building in order to experience LeWitt’s ideas about using decoration drawings to help emphasizing the architectural elements.

Infinite Cubes LeWitt decided to reduce art to its essentials, “to recreate art, to start from square one”, beginning literally with squares or cubes. He was not interested in materials or forms – the focus was on systems and concepts of volume, transparency, sequences, variations and irregularity, which he expressed in words that might or might not be translated into actual sculptures or photographs or drawings. To him, ideas were what counted. This gallery allows visitors to test the countless possibilities of using Cubes (the most standard form) as a grammatical device to create other more interesting forms. They are released from the necessity of being significant in themselves, and being better used for creating large-scale forms.

Continuous Lines Through his career, LeWitt did many line drawings that followed his own instructions of lines and bands. His drawings utilize lines in four directions (vertical, horizontal, diagonal left, and diagonal right) drawn in limited colors of black, yellow, red, and blue. Gallery Continuous Lines is designed based on his line drawing instructions and color coding system. This interactives allow visitors to experience the different combinations of the four basic bands and how they can change the way people feel in the space – just like different melodies.

The multi-use outdoor space will help express new voices from African Americans, redefine arts to the public, and improve communication in the historical neighborhood.

The existing second floor dining area is not welcoming or attractive enough for visitors. So this signage design also focuses on the update of Amenities Wayfinding System.
The LED Moving Letters work well with the building structure, perfectly integrated in the environment. LED Edge-lit Signage and LED Light Box are “suggestions for the visitor, who becomes the creator of his path through the space, which is a charming place to visit.

Architect James Renwick, Jr. designed this building and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The hospital opened in 1854 to care for people with contagious diseases. Later it housed one of the first nursing schools in the U.S. It was abandoned in the early 1950s. In 2009, exterior stabilization was erected to protect the structure.

| Strecker Lab
Playground
This laboratory opened in 1892. A division of City Hospital, it was the nation’s first institution for pathological and bacteriological research. It was closed in the 1950s. It was restored in the 1990s and is now used to house a power substation for the E and M subway lines.
| Blackwell House
Shop Basketball Court Office
The Blackwell family took possession of the island in 1676 and held it for 150 years. They mined its quarries, farmed its fruit trees and, during the post-Revolutionary War era, built the house in the center of the island.
| Chapel of The Good Shepherd The New York Episcopal Mission Society employed Frederick Clark Withers to design the structure. Opened in 1889, the chapel provided a house of worship and comfort for the unwanted poor and sick who were housed on the island. Now as the home to Catholic and Protestant congregations, also serves as meeting hall.
| Octagon The NYC Municipal Lunatic Asylum opened in 1839. After 1895 together with City Hospital, formed two of the world’s largest health care institutions. Restored in 2006 as the central loby of a two-wing apartment building.

Confluence
The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) will serve as the world’s leading scientific hospital for the innovation and application of new and more promising treatments that improve and eliminate the effects of injury, disease and debilitating health conditions.
The uniqueness of Chicago’s river becomes our inspiration. In this highly urban city, we searched for the relationship between the city and the people who live in it. Confluence means a coming or flowing together, meeting, or gathering at one point. We believe that patients and doctors in RIC share the same thoughts about the healing process. Also in our design, architecture, landscape and interior are linked together and affected by each other.
