POWERMUMMIE | KARA I think the hardest thing for me is being ok with chaos and letting go of things being “perfect”.

To start with, could you please introduce yourself to us? I’m Kara Haught. My older sister Shelly and I co/founded Raising Wild. We grew up in Florida, sunshine state and spent every chance we had in the water. My husband and I are raising our 4 kids on Alligator Lake in Central Florida. We are a little backwoods and we love it! Our family is on a constant search for the next fun adventure! Have you always wanted children? Always! We grew up in a big family and my sisters are my best friends! How old were you when you got your first sprout? I was 21! Were you scared of the idea of becoming a mother? Not really! I have such a great support system in my sisters and friends that I knew if I needed anything, I had a great sounding board of advice. Did pregnancy have a lot of impact on your life? Not at first haha, but with each pregnancy it got harder. By # 4 my body was waving the white flag and calling mercy! Does having children fit well into the lifestyle you created for yourself next to Raising Wild? Yes! My co/founder and sister Shelly and I have always wanted to start a business together. Every time we got an idea formulating one of us would end up pregnant and tired. After both of our 4th babies we had enough sleep at night and time to steal away in the day that RWS could really take off. As the company has grown so has the time we can commit to it.

What do you find most difficult about motherhood? I think the hardest thing for me is being ok with chaos and letting go of things being “perfect”. Managing a household, a business and 4 babies is hard and a lot of the time it feels like herding cats. It’s been liberating to be able to say…. “you know what? A kid’s job at cleaning the bathroom is better than no cleaning the bathroom.” Right?! How old are the kids now? Austin 12, Kate 10, Charlotte 8 & Bowie 6 Do they have strong characters; do they resemble you or daddy? We have a great mix of the both of us in each of them. Strong willed, sensitive, outgoing, smart, intuitive, dependable, honest, creative, obedient/disobedient all of which have moulded them and their personalities into the perfect little humans they are and the incredible leaders they will become as adults. Is your girl a real girly girl or is she more of a tomboy? – Is your boy mischievous or is he more of a momma’s boy? Both our boys are very outdoorsy. Our 12 year old can identify any creepy crawling bug or bird flying in the sky and Bowie our little guy is following in his footsteps. Our girls are a perfect mix! For church on Sunday they are all dresses, hair and lip-gloss but they would never miss chance to go camping or hunting with their daddy!

Have you changed a lot as a person since you became a mom? I remember when I met my husband I knew I had my partner for life and felt so fulfilled in that. BUT when I had my first baby… I knew I had a genuine purpose in life- to be his mama and provide the best childhood I could for him.

19.

We have a blonde, brown and red head so the mad scientist in me wants to see what we could create next.

How do your kids get along with each other? For the most part they get a long great. I feel like spacing them 2 years apart kept them close enough to be friends but far enough to not be competitive… For now at least ;)

Do you have a favourite ‘hotspot’ that you like to go with your children? Evenings at the beach! The crowds are gone and the sun isn’t so hot! So many of our favourite memories are sun sets on the beach.

How do you deal with the current new media at home? (For example, smartphone / tablet, YouTube, games etc.) Or do you prefer to play more old-fashioned games like memory, for example. I have a love hate (mostly hate) relationship with devices. They are such an incredible tool and are very grateful for them but 30 mins or 3 hours, it’s never enough time. We live on a lot of land and really enjoy the outdoors. It’s the best to be able to send the kids outside and let their imaginations run wild.

Do you prefer healthy meals or can a tasty quick snack also be justified from time to time? Also, are your kids picky eaters or would they eat anything? I am the worst about meals for myself…. An apple or protein bar here, handful of candy there throughout the day but suppertime we get real with at our house. We all sit around a yummy dinner and talk about the great things that happen that day. Our kids are very adventurous eaters. Lamb and Brussels sprouts are some of their favourites!

When looking at your children, what’s the happiest moment you can think of? Being out on the water enjoying nature is where we are all the happiest! We live for a good adventure. On the ocean or lake… anytime we get the chance we are out on the water.

What important values would you like to pass on to your children in life? Kindness! It’s deeper rooted than just being nice. A kind heart can change people and situations. I’m learning this alongside them. It’s hard because sometimes you must put your own wants aside for a greater result.

Would you like to have an even bigger family or are you thinking my job here is done? We have a blonde, brown and red head so the mad scientist in me wants to see what we could create next. But 4 kids is a lot and the older they get the busier lives becomes. We are calling it quits (until I see another Facebook time hop of their cute baby faces and then maybe I’ll talk my honey into 1 more haha)

Our goal at RW is to inspire women to get out of the beach chair and start enjoying life’s adventures!

Now I’ve mentioned your brand, but for those who do not know it yet ... Can you tell us more about Raising Wild, when did you start with it and what makes Raising Wild special? We make swimsuits for active women. After having 4 babies each, we both decided we needed more out of our swimsuits then to be able to lay still and look pretty. We wanted to be able to move around and venture with our little humans without feeling uncomfortable or exposed. We launched our first 2 suits as a pre-order in the summer of 2015 and sold out before they left the factory. In late 2016 we aired on ABC’s Shark Tank where we got a deal with Barbara Corcoran. Our goal at RW is to inspire women to get out of the beach chair and start enjoying life’s adventures! Are there any new and exciting things we can expect from you, or do you have your hands full with making new swimwear? We have lots of new stuff for SS18 including new suits, cover-ups and another super secret collection that we’ve been working on and are VERY excited about!

“Definitely mums and dads who wants to eat healthy sauces Could you please introduce yourself to us? I am Ottilia Aviram, the Co-Founder of Rebelicious Sauces, we produce sauces that have no added sugar or salt, for parents that are time-poor, and wish to feed their children healthy, nutritious food, our sauces give parents the confidence to do this.

Who is your target audience? Definitely mums and dads who want to eat a healthy sauce with no added sugar and low in salt, either with their family or just as a simple meal they can make for themselves, and find it difficult to find the right sauce they can use for their children and themselves.

Does having a small child fit well into the lifestyle you created next to Rebelicious Sauces? Felicity is a real gourmet child and she loves to get involved in tasting the food and any new flavours we create. We first try out all the sauces we make on her.

What made you decide to start a shop? On returning to work after having Felicity we baby-led fed her and we found it difficult to find a sauce that we could use to eat with her, they were all high in salt or sugar. We wanted to enable other mums and dads to be able to use our sauces and have the chance to try new flavours and spices with their children.

CHITCHATS | ANGELIQUEA “What are we doing with our lives?” We decided that night to sell it all and travel.

To start with, could you please introduce yourself? My husband and I are both from San Diego, California and we’ve managed to raise three amazing little humans—Fox (1), Phoenix (3), Cash (6) in a beautiful home with all the fixings. The kids have a great life, Vinny (my husband) had a good job, and we were generally a very happy bunch — but we felt that something was… well, missing. Long story short, after tons of self-reflection and consideration as to how we can grow to be better as a family, and in turn, be a better influence to others around us, we decided to take a giant leap — we call this our “life cleanse.” So we sold ALL of our material possessions—our home, cars, clothing, luxury items, toys, everything— and underwent a complete lifestyle transformation to travel the world and live a more present, purposeful and intentional lifestyle. Soaking up experiences and learning from different cultures, one day at a time. We also consider ourselves a family of professional photographers and journalists currently traveling all over the world covering stories about family travel. We’re documenting the entire process and sharing it via our blog, Instagram and YouTube channel through high-quality photos and video content. Currently our website and social media channels receive over 70k visits/impressions per month. Where did you grow up? San Diego, CA What do you do for a living? (work/education) I am a stay at home mom and my husband owns a digital marketing agency (elevatedgrp.com) focused on helping new/small businesses with their online presence. What made you decide to start a social media account for your family? Initially just to capture the memories of my children and share it with close friends and family.

raisingthefree

To those considering to also set up an Instagram account and blog: How much time does it take? It takes A LOT of time and focus. I think the most important part is finding your niche and what you want to be about. Honing in on what your story is and what you want to give to people has been the longest/hardest process for us. I think we are still perfecting it but heading in the right direction. You have mentioned that you sold everything to travel the world. What made you decide to do this? About 8 months ago, Vinny and I had put the children down to bed and decided to watch a documentary called Be Here Now: The Andy Whitfield Story. It wasn’t specifically about travel but more about living your life to the fullest because you never know when it may end. Immediately after watching the documentary we looked at each other and said, “what are we doing with our lives?” We decided that night to sell it all and travel. What is the most challenging thing about travelling with kids? And the most rewarding? The most challenging part is lowering your expectations of what you can see and do during travel. If the children aren’t having a good day, you need to be willing to just call it all off and head back to the hotel or villa. The good news though is that when you’re travelling for an extended period of time, its not as big of a loss to “do nothing” for an entire day. There will always be tomorrow. The most rewarding is experiencing things for the first time as a family. When was the last time you did something that BOTH you and your children have never done before? Get outside...go explore...breath in fresh air. If happiness is the goal, and it should be, then adventure should be a priority. Sometimes traveling with kids can seem like a lot or overwhelming and it won’t always be perfect. But seeing the magic and wonder in their eyes, and feeling it yourself at the same time, is oh so worth it.

“It’s amazing how your motherly instincts come alive during pregnancy and birth”.

Wow! Looking at your blog and social media feed, you can see that you’ve been to beautiful places around the world. What places have you visited thus far? So far: Mexico, Bali, Singapore, Thailand, Kuala Lumpur and up next is Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. What is your favourite destination and why? Right now it’s Bali. We have a series of YouTube videos covering our time here. The people and the general energy of the island is like nothing else we have ever experienced. The people seem so genuinely happy and gracious. And the island itself has the indescribable energy about it that exudes positivity. Was your first pregnancy planned and were you ready to become a mum? Totally unplanned. In fact we weren’t even married yet. We planned to wait at least 3-4 more years before having kids. We wanted to travel and do more as a couple first. But Cash had other ideas. I knew nothing about being a mom and was an only child growing up with very little experience with babies. I don’t think you’re ever ready to be a mom, but it’s amazing how your motherly instincts come alive during pregnancy and birth. I never could have guessed it, but the whole thing came natural to me. Do you plan on having more kids? At this point no. But you never know what the future may hold. If you asked me a year ago if I would ever sell everything I own to travel the world I would say “No way!” but here I am. Do you ever get homesick or do you find that you adapt quickly to your surroundings? Not yet! So far, we are loving this new journey. Without question we miss our friends and family, but we know we will see them again soon.

raisingthefree

.42

Also, do you prefer to cook homemade healthy meals or is a quick snack also justified from time to time? We do a ton of research about the places we go and aim to find the healthiest of restaurants. It’s kind of a fun game for us. So even when we eat out, we feel good about it. But we also love to cook at home with the kids and often stay in Airbnb’s in order to have a kitchen to cook in. Are your kids picky eaters or would they eat everything you give them? We have some picky eaters and some children that will eat just about anything. We always strive to introduce new foods to all of them and find ways of making a game out of it. Our motto is you always have to try it once and if you don’t like it we won’t make you eat it again, but you have to try it once. That seems to work well for us. What clothing brands do you like to shop for your kids? We’re actually about to launch our own children’s line that we are very excited about. Other brands we love are Bowie James (swimwear), Cleobella Littles, and Little Urban Apparel. How about shoe brands? Is there a particular brand you gravitate towards more? We Native shoes and they work well for our active lifestyle. We also love Freshly Picked and Pretty Brave. Are your kids enrolled into a school? If so, what do you do when they are off to (pre)school? They are not currently enrolled in school. We are doing some home learning with them this year and our oldest will be in a more formal education setting in the fall of 2018. We are still deciding what exactly that will be, but it will be a structured education.

43.

PHOTOGRAPHY | TABZWILSON.COM

What do you do when they fall asleep? Work, meditate and read. We usually spend 5 nights a week working for 2-3 hours and then the other 2 nights we just relax and do something as a couple. One of those nights is our date night. It’s something we ALWAYS do and make it a priority. What important values would you like to pass on to your children? Passion for life. Taking care of each other and those you love. And doing something with your life that helps the greater good of the world. When you have time to yourself, what do you enjoy doing most? Yoga and meditating. Do you have a hotspot; nice places where you like to go to with your kids for lunch or just have a relaxing moment with them? We are always moving so it’s always changing. But right now it’s the beach. All of the kids are absolutely loving exploring and playing in the sand and water. What is the kids’ favourite place to hang out? Anywhere with water. On your blog you have mentioned that you try to create a ‘media-free’ lifestyle for your kids. How is this going so far and are you planning on changing this as they get older? So far it’s going great and I think it just gets easier and easier. We are all so used to it now. We know that at some point, media will be a part of their lives, but we are going to continue to hold out as long as possible. We strongly feel that eliminating media has had a huge positive impact on their social skills and their general happiness. Who are you most grateful for in life? (Family, Mum or dad?) My husband. Is there anything else you would want to share with us besides these questions? Just that we have SO much more traveling and growing to do this year and we hope that everyone will follow along and share any advice/suggestions they have on where to go and what to do.

We strongly feel that eliminating media has had a huge positive impact on their social skills and their general happiness.

Good motor skills are important for your child’s future Acquiring motor skills is just one part of children’s development. Mastering fine and gross motor skills are important for children’s growth and independence. Having good motor control helps children explore the world around them and also helps with their cognitive development. All children need to have their motor skills stimulated, and with simple daily exercises you can strengthen the child’s ability to play, increase its ability to concentrate, etc. This is important for the children’s ability to do well in life in the future. Tips for daily exercises that stimulate the sense of balance, the foundation of your child’s motor skills: 5 somersaults When your child is able to hold his head, you can start doing somersaults. Make sure that the child’s neck is supported - the child should not stand on its head, but be laid down on its neck. 8 rolls both ways You can start from your child is two months old, or can more or less hold its head up. Gently roll the child from side to side several times on a soft surface. 1 Good Swing Hold children under the age of six months close to your body and rock, turn and dance around. Carrots and Peas ontwerpt tijdloze kinderkamer accessoires van hout. Maak kennis met onze ‘Friends of the Forest’ serie.

This is a powerful and timely story about one boy’s epic journey across Africa to Europe, a graphic novel for all children with glorious colour artwork throughout. From Eoin Colfer, previously Irish Children’s Laureate, and the team behind his bestselling Artemis Fowl graphic novels. Ebo: alone. His sister left months ago. Now his brother has disappeared too, and Ebo knows it can only be to make the hazardous journey to Europe. Ebo’s epic journey takes him across the Sahara Desert to the dangerous streets of Tripoli, and finally out to the merciless sea. But with every step he holds on to his hope for a new life, and a reunion with his sister.

THE 1.000 YEAR OLD BOY

The astonishing, beautiful new story for all readers of 10 and over from the bestselling and Costa-shortlisted author of TIME TRAVELLING WITH A HAMSTER. There are stories about people who want to live forever. This is not one of those stories. This is a story about someone who wants to stop... Alfie Monk is like any other nearly teenage boy - except he’s 1,000 years old and can remember the last Viking invasion of England. Obviously no one believes him. So when everything Alfie knows and loves is destroyed in a fire, and the modern world comes crashing in, Alfie embarks on a mission to find friendship, acceptance, and a different way to live... which means finding a way to make sure he will eventually die.

SKY SONG

In the snowy kingdom of Erkenwald, whales glide between icebergs, wolves hunt on the tundra and polar bears roam the glaciers. But the people of this land aren’t so easy to find - because Erkenwald is ruled by an evil Ice Queen and the tribes must stay hidden or risk becoming her prisoners at Winterfang Palace. Join Eska, a girl who breaks free from a cursed music box, and Flint, a boy whose inventions could change the fate of Erkenwald forever, as they journey to the Never Cliffs and beyond in search of an ancient, almost forgotten, song with the power to force the Ice Queen back. This is a story about an eagle huntress, an inventor and an organ made of icicles. But it is also a story about belonging, even at the very edges of our world . . .

HAVE 2 READ | TOOBY

Tooby and the dark forest Many kids are afraid of the dark. So is the little monkey Tooby. He can not sleep and peeks under his bed to check for monsters. He also hears noises outside. He soon discovers two eyes stare at him from the darkness. That is creepy, or not? His friend Flingo the Flamingo takes Tooby on a nighttime walk into the forest, where they discover many animals which live at night. Tooby learns that there are no monsters in the dark to be afraid of but instead he finds little friends such as an owl, mouse, a bat and a cat. The short story helps young kids aged 3-8 years old to overcome their bedtime fears alongside Tooby and Flingo in a playful manner. Tooby and the dark forest is the 5th book from the popular Tooby series written by Bas Jussen and illustrated by Willemijn Jussen and is published by JusstPublish. All Tooby books are bilingual with the stories in both English and Dutch text. The books are available at every bookstore in the Netherlands and online.

LITTLE TALKS | MUMMIE MADELIN

“I’ve learnt to stop and chill out and slow down to enjoy things” To start with, could you please introduce yourself to us? Hi my name is Madelin, I’m a 28 year old Australian mum of Hunter and Evie! Writer/content creator, red wine enthusiast, can make a mean chicken korma and love reading. Evie is 2, sassy and incredibly smart, loves her little brother Hunter, her dolls and learning new things.

QUESTIONS FOR MUMMY

What is the prettiest thing about mummy? Headband!

Has motherhood changed your life a lot? Um, is that a real question? My entire WORLD has changed hahaha.

What do you like to do with mum and why? Going to the beach! What is your favourite movie? “Dory Memo” (Nemo) What would you wear every single day? “Me” (which is kind of accurate because she is always naked!) What are you favourite shoes? My boots! What funny thing does mummy do? Um, mummy funny go “PFFFFFF” (large spitting noise that I cannot recall regularly doing…) What makes you really happy and why? “Um, me!”

Was your first pregnancy planned and were you ready to become a mum? No and no, I suppose but I always knew we wanted children in the future.

What is your favourite spot to go to with your children? The beach. We spend every weekend road tripping to new beaches and country pubs exploring. What clothing brands do you like to shop for Maxx and Louie? To be honest, we use places like Kmart a lot (which would probably be similar to Primark or George) because it’s cheap and trendy and they just get so filthy! What important values do you want to teach your children and what have you learned from them? Acceptance, patience, openness, love, understanding, empathy. I’ve learnt to stop and chill out and slow down to enjoy things. What do you do when they are asleep? Also sleep! Catch up on work, watch TV, drink wine and wind down with Chris.

Do you help mum a lot at home? What do you help her with? Cooking! If you have been naughty, what do you do to make it up to mummy? “Forry, mummy” (Apologise).

71.

“I was a lot more rested, that’s for sure!” How did you come up with their names? Evie was Chris’ choice actually, and we loved it straight away. Her middle name is a family name from his side. Hunter we also had chosen for Evie so was a simple choice, and his name is a family name from my side. What makes you really happy/proud as a mum? Watching them be kind and share and be funny with other people. How were you before you became a mummy? How was I? I was a lot more rested, that’s for sure! When do you recognize yourself in your children? Cheekiness, kindness and complete ‘bull in a china store’ attitude! What is the most fun/beautiful moment that you have experienced with your children? Every weekend when it’s just the 4 of us, hanging out, exploring, eating and enjoying time together is amazing and I am filled with gratitude and love. Having our wedding together was special too.

COLUMN | PUBERCHICKIE

“Now Puberchickie is no longer a toddler, but I still see some similarities.” When you become a mother for the first time, you have no idea. You really have no idea that your sweet, precious baby can become a howling, thrashing, dramatic toddler. Or a howling, thrashing, dramatic Puberchick. It cannot be imagined that that sweet, soft baby face can turn into a complete storm cloud with thick eyes from hysterically crying. Or that toddlers / teens can really draw blood from under your perfectly manicured nails, even if you love them so. Though that blood disappears very quickly when she, totally confused, wipes away her tears with the back of her hand. Once, when Puberchicke was about 2 years old, Mrs got a toddler tantrum in aisle 4 of Sainbury’s. Very odd: From chit chatting, fruit weighing, walking with the basket and giggling together, to a hard screaming monster. Within 1 nanosecond. The reason? I said no to Dora cookies. A good reason to scream loudly “Mummy stupid!” And throw yourself dramatically screeching on the ground right? For a moment I felt uncomfortable. When such a thing happens you are in fact the attraction of the day, especially, to other mothers who feel that their children are raised better. And would neeeverrr do something like that. Outside that is. But apparently mine does. And instead of lecturing my toddler or dragging her home, I sat down with her. I threw myself down on the floor just as dramatically and went screaming. At the same volume. She has never corrected herself so quickly. She stood up, stopped crying (and screaming) and said softly “Mama, stop that.” She never asked for Dora cookies again. Or cried in Sainbury’s. Now Puberchickie is no longer a toddler, but I still see some similarities. The questions and reactions are different, but it is of course the same principle. Because slamming a door much too hard, while crying loudly and shouting STUPID when I say no, is the same as that Dora cookie thing. So I’m going to adjust again. I now also shut the door much too hard and shout very loudly YES STUPID! And I’m so endeared by her again when she wipes away her tears with the back of her soft hand. Talk to you later. Sam

HAVE 2 SEE | MOVIE

TOOBY AND THE JUNGLE JUMBLE “Pollution is a problem everywhere, also on this side of the ocean”

It seems like a project from a Hollywood film studio like Disney

An animated movie creating awareness among children about the environment. But Tooby and the Jungle Jumble is made by volunteers. After a successful première on the tropical island of Curaçao, the makers are now hoping to conquer Europe. Producing an animated movie is every day business for a company like Disney. It is not if you are trying to do this on a small Caribbean island. Just ask Willemijn Jussen, born and raised in Curaçao and the producer/ artist behind Tooby and the Jungle Jumble. She has been drawing all her life, leading up to her own series of illustrated children’s books about Tooby the monkey and his friends, written by her husband Bas Jussen. “At some point I wanted a new challenge and bring Tooby to life on the big screen”, she tells. A co-worker asked Willemijn what she could be woken up for in the middle of the night. “My answer was: anything about Tooby and for a better environment. That moment I understood, I had to combine those passions and make a movie with a message.”, she explains.

87.

That was easier said than done. Curaçao lacks a film studios and nobody there had any experience with animated movies. Neither was there enough money. Willemijn started with the creation of a short trailer to attract investors and to gain experience. She designed the main characters Tooby, Flingo the flamingo and Bono the elephant and the backgrounds, while her husband drew the antagonists, King Rat and his army of cockroaches. She got help of other creative souls like an illustrator from Ukraine, an old friend who wrote the music and from well known Curaçao artists: singer Izaline Calister and musical star Danny Yanga. An studio from India transferred the hand drawn characters into 3D animated animals.

“Tooby is used as a supporting film for Disney’s Spark in local theatres” Creating the actual movie was not the only challenge however.

“Financing the project was just as hard and time consuming”, Willemijn recalls. She funded the trailer film herself but producing the entire movie was too expensive. “A bunch of volunteers poured their heart and soul into it alongside me, but there were also professional companies that needed to be paid such as the animation studio in India and a sound recording studio in the Netherlands.” In order to find investors Willemijn visted potential sponsors and foundations, armed with a map full of drawings and calculations. Tireless she presented the trailer in numerous boardrooms and with success. Eventually she raised enough money to finance a 30-minute film with songs. Tooby and the Jungle Jumble had a successful première on Curaçao and used as a supporting film for Disney’s Spark in local theatres. Willemijn: “To have it shown alongside a big Disney production was a huge compliment.” Subsequently a local TV station broadcasted the movie several time and free dvd’s were distributed on all elementary schools on the islands of Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire as part of a project to create more awareness of the environment among young children. “An animated movie with a good story is the perfect way to reach kids I have experienced with my own 8-year old twins”, Willemijn says. “If we want our children to grow up in a cleaner world we must make changes now. That starts with educating the youngest generation.” The story of Tooby and the Jungle Jumble revolves around the monkey Tooby and his friends after they discover a strange smell in their forest. They discover an evil King Rat plans to turn the forest into a waste land for himself and his army of cockroaches. Tooby and friends are captured and must recycle waste to escape and stop the King rat before it is too late. Kids in Curaçao, Aruba en Bonaire already know how that story ends. Now Willemijn and her husband, who have since moved to the Netherlands, plan to bring their movie to Europe to spread their message to children. Willemijn: “Pollution is a problem everywhere, also on this side of the ocean. So we hope to get movie theatres, television and schools interested in our film.”

DESIGNER TALKS

STORY BEHIND THE BRAND

.92

DESIGNER TALKS | KIDDYCOLORS “Our goal is to bring a positive change to the lives of Thai and Burmese working mothers”

Please introduce yourself? I am Renske de Gee, 41 years old, married and mother to a 9-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter. In 2011 we went to Thailand with the family to follow our dream and build a new life in Chiang Mai. I started KiddyColors there after a year. I started this to support the poor population. Local women now make name garlands and children’s room accessories here, which go with the current baby and nursery trends. How long have you been busy with designing? KiddyColors has existed for 6 years. We have an office in Chiang Mai, where 2 women work full-time and there are 10 other women working from home. This way, they can organize their working time so that it can easily be combined with their private lives. The women who work in the office are also allowed to bring their young children to the office and decide their working hours themselves. As long as they deliver good work, I am satisfied. I know better than anyone how difficult it is to combine your work with family life. And nurseries are not available in Thailand and even if they were; then one cannot pay for it. For the older children of my employees, I therefore also pay their school fees. In those 6 years, KiddyColors has really become known for the tailor made name garlands. Garlands with letters filled with a cushion filling and cheered up with felt hearts and stars and wooden and silicone beads in the trend colours of today. We have already sold more than 6000 and what I see is that the customers keep coming back for it. It is really the perfect maternity gift to give and to receive. What is the philosophy behind the brand? KiddyColors aims to bring a positive change in the lives of Thai and Burmese working mothers. These women earn a fair salary and work under excellent conditions. KiddyColors pays school fees for the children and KiddyColors also donates part of its revenue to local charities. Where do you find inspiration? I follow the trends closely online and we receive a lot of questions from customers. When I see that I often get the same question, I check to see if I can take this into production. As long as it remains affordable for the customer and the product can meet all safety requirements. I try to adapt to the current children’s room trends in a way that it will still fit KiddyColors. Do you work alone or do you have a team behind you? I have a great team of women in Thailand who make the products for me. Without them there would be no KiddyColors. I can think of it all, but in the end it has to be made. These women are so driven and work so hard. They are really like family to me. That does not alter the fact that I am a strict employer. The final product should look perfect either way.

93.

How important is quality to you? Quality is the most important thing, without a good product you have no customers and no sales. I cannot pay the wages of the women without sales. And I pay them a very good salary. There is not much left for me. The women know that they should not arrive with half work. I am very strict and they know that. I also can see if an employee does not do it with pleasure. You can see it in the final product. Then they cannot continue to make it anymore and I try to find other work for them that they might like. Our products are really made with love and attention. I think the customers see this too, because they often come back. Which fabrics do you prefer working with, natural or other types of materials? I work with cheerful materials and especially safe materials. My products have to meet very strict requirements and I buy my materials there. I do make sure that it is produced sustainably. Our silicone beads are BPA-free, our wooden beads are unprocessed. So safe for small children’s hands like the felt figures. We test our fabrics ourselves. What sets your collection apart from other brands? I think my products are mainly distinguished by the story behind them. The customer receives a handmade product. It has been made with love and attention. In times where we do not know exactly under which conditions something has been produced, this is becoming increasingly important. At KiddyColors you are guaranteed to receive a fair product for a fair price. Who is your audience and what is your age category? Women between 25 and 38 years old mainly buy from KiddyColors. They buy products for the nursery of their own young children or are looking for a personal maternity gift. Is there anything else you would like to add to these questions? To all readers, check out our website www.kiddycolors.com and our Facebook page www.facebook.com/kiddycolors.nl regularly to keep up to date with all new developments.
