01. LAURISILVA!
Restoration of Endemic Laurel Forest & Mitigation of Seawater Intrusion
2022 Spring Povoacao, S. Miguel Island the Archipelago of Azores, Portugal MLA Graduate Project
Laurel forest, also called laurisilva or laurissilva, is a type of subtropical forest found in areas with high humidity and relatively stable, mild temperatures. The forest is characterized by broadleaf tree species with evergreen, glossy and elongated leaves, known as "laurophyll" or "lauroid". Plants from the laurel family (Lauraceae) may or may not be present, depending on the location. But from 2007 to 2018, the remnant laurisilva has been slowly swallowed up by the invasive forest which has dominated the land now. The government established the Pico da Vara Nature Reserve to protect the habitat of laurel forest. This project is a plan to restore the ancient native habitat of laurisilva, recover the ecological functions of laurisilva for landslide mitigation and seawater intrusion adaptation, and introduce a network of community engagement spaces that reclaim the laurisilva as a place for people.

30% Humidy
After the 1800s, much of the original native vegetation has been displaced because of human activity, including felling forests for timber and firewood, clearing vegetation for grazing and agriculture, and introducing foreign plants and animals. Not only do Laurisilva help increase biodiversity, but they also contribute to replenishing the aquifers. In the future, due to climate change and booming tourism of the Azores, sea levels rising will increase the intrusion of seawater into the groundwater to salinize the drinking water, and more groundwater will be overdrawn to meet development needs. Compared with monoculture invasive forests, the complex vertical plant structure of laurel forest can trap more precipitation, moderate surface runoff, inhibit evaporation, improve water quality and replenish groundwater. Experiments have shown that the increase in groundwater content will significantly reduce the adverse effects of seawater intrusion in coastal areas. From peak to coastal area. 4 subareas are indentified representing different landscape characters within th pilot site. These pilot sites will rebind the community to Laurisilva, while collaborating with each other to form an ecosystem that replenishings groundwater. 4
SUBAREA 1 - BUFFER First subarea is located at the junction between the edge of invasive forest and laurel forest, once the invasive species get in touch with the native species, they will create deep shadow and release inhibitor to make native species die. Compared with the simple vertical vegetation structure of a monoculture invasive forest, the complex multi-layered vertical vegetation structure possessed by the native Laurel forest can effectively retain rainwater and reduce the volatilization of rainwater, so that the soil has time to absorb them slowly.
5
6
SUBAREA 2 - WET LANDSCAPE This site is located at a runoff converging site, where the runoff flow is converging with high speed. At present, this area is covered by invasive forest which is dominant by Australia cheesewood. This condition is bad for replenishing aquifer because of bad ability of Australia cheesewood's capturing runoff. Cut down these invasive trees and plant native speceis saplings recovering native forest. And pile these cut trees on site as runoff barriers to reduce the speed of runoff flowing and reshape the waterline, giving soil time to absorb the surface water.
7
8
SUBAREA 3 - UNION-HUB I hope that the sub-area 3 will bring ecological value while also bringing social and economic value to the locals. To encourage local people to establish native species nursery as alternative livelihood and it can also offer sapling and seeds for this restoration project. To reuse the rich biomass embedded in pittosporum for local daily live, the biomass factory can offer heating and hot water for local people. Local ecological institutes can collaborate with community hub to train people the skills of restoring forest. Handicraft workshops can produce materials such as bricks, paving, etc. needed for construction.
9
10
SUBAREA 4 RESILIENT WATERFRONT Sub-area 4 is located at a waterfront in the costal area, which directly faces the challenge of seawater intrusion. In the future, as sea levels rise, seawater intrusion will become more serious, thus salinizing the underground drinking water of waterfront residents, and the increase in groundwater content can significantly inhibit the effect of saltwater intrusion. I assume to add two water barriers between the creek and the residential area to reduce the effect of seawater intrusion on wells. Then release a resilient waterfront for recreational use to adapt different tidal level. Through cut&fill, I could replace part of the flooding wall by raising the terrain. An outdoor theater is set up in the southern mound, which can be used as a venue for festivals or major events, and the northern mound is planted with wildflower meadows, and the style is more wild. The public lido is jointly served by tourists and locals alike with the public gym.

03. CAMPUS HUB A Place That Engage People Together
2018 Spring Huazhong University of Science & Technology Wuhan, Hubei, China Independent Study 2018 China Living Environment Design Year Award
This project is a landscape node in the undergraduate urban design "Campus & Neighborhood Space Design", which is surrounded by different functional blocks and different groups of people. Therefore, this project needs to combine the functional requirements of different groups and weave them together.
Age
17
In the meanwhile, the node is located in the middle of the landscape axis, where people from multiple directions converge. so this project adopts the multilayer design to effectively ease the pedestrian traffic and improve the quality of Campus Slow-traffic System.
18
MULTIPLE PEOPLE & MULTIPLE ACTIVITIES Connecting the ground floor space of the international students' apartment with the external activity space is conducive to the international students' better integration into the life of Chinese neighborhood space. The organic combination of activity functional needs of different ages and the use of functions do not affect each other at the same time, which makes the space more interesting and also meets the psychological needs of people looking at each other.

At the same time of landscape space design, I also configured the seasonal phases of plants in different seasons to strengthen the spatial feeling of landscape nodes.
23
Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children between 6 and 7 years old,as well as 6 adult staff members.
The tragedy of the sandy hook shooting is unimaginable, so the design process of this project is very difficult. If narrative landscape is to be made, in my opinion, this project is not only to directly commemorate the victims, but also to allow visitors to experience fear and reflect on life along the walking route I set.

MEMORIAM The memorial is placed in a narrow submerged corridor. The low temperature and semi-enclosed space under the water can stimulate visitors' sense of loneliness. The contorted walls provide rich light and shadow effects for the underwater space. In the greytoned space, the rusty red monument is more visible, and its mottled texture reflects the trauma of the victims.
MEDITATION The meditation room which follows the hillside and faces the pond provides a good view corridor for meditators. The enclosed inner courtyard provides visitors with a relatively quiet space. The twisted branches of the flowering dogwood can add vitality to the cold inner courtyard and symbolize hope. There are several circular patios on the roof of the building, which can provide rich light and shadow effect.

Landscape Renovation of Industrial Artifitial Island
2021 SWA Summer Student Program Fuxing Island Yangpu, Shanghai, China. Independent Study
AFTER DEMOLITION ≈ 3900T CONSTRUCTION WASTE ≈ 150MT CO2 EMISSION
Located on the industrial waterfront of the eastern coast of Yangpu District of Shanghai, Fuxing Island’s large number of traditional industrial plants on the island are undergoing transformation as urbanization deepens. At the same time, with the “carbon neutralization” goal, the island’s high energy consumption, high carbon emissions, high pollution of cement mixing, shipbuilding, chemical and other traditional manufacturing industries will inevitably take energy conservation and emission reduction as a new development goal, and will even be replaced by other low-carbon industries.
≈ 33YRS CO2 SEQUESTRATION OF FUXING PARK 2021+33=2054----2050 CARBON NEUTRAL
At present, the island’s carbon emissions include two main sources: the island’s industrial production carbon emissions and developed transport logistics and transportation carbon emissions. About carbon sequestration, the green area only 4.19 hecters icluding the middle fuxing park now, and this park is firmly enclosed by fence, so cannot dialogue with its context And with the development of urbanization and the transformation of traditional industries, what will happen to the island’s carbon emissions sources in the future? This is the question that needs to be answered in the first phase of development.
31
32
METHOD - REUSE OF CONSTRUCTION WASTE A large number of temporary and poorly constructed buildings on the island have also had to be demolished, and the construction waste generated by demolition should be reused to the maximum extent possible, introduced into new landscapes and new buildings to reduce the introduction of new carbon-intensive materials.
Some of these wastes can be used directly, such as concrete debris can be used to shape waterfront, some can be reused after simple treatment such as glasses can be broken down and become the aggregate , and some can not be used but can be buried to make landforms to replace the floor control wall. these methods will be reflected on my design.

In the future, if these traditioanal industries are moved away from site, the source of carbon emission would be changed into two parts, one is building /landscape construction, another is people’s daily life.(such as building or landscape material , Transportation, Houshold waste) and in the meanwhile, I hope to add more and diverse green space into this site to improve the diversity of carbon sink.

A: RENEWABLE BUILDING - ZERO CARBON HUB Site A is renewal building - this area is closed to traffic hub, the important entrance of this island and an important shipyard heritage, so I want to transform this warehousing building into an vertical parking lot, motor vehical can park on the first floor, and non motor vehicle can parking 2rd and 3th floor. We encourage future residents, visitors and workers to park their cars on the ground floor and hire bicycles when they travel this island. bikes can be accessed via a ramp inside the building to the second floor, and riders can also take a view from the skywalk. The warehouse buildings retain part of the frame structure and are soften the boundary by vertical greening. and waste wooden bean as paving, gabion as bench
