Project at KPF (Under construction) 2018-2021 | Shanghai, China Principal: Rob Whitlock | Supervisor: Grace Liao SD; DD; CD Integrating both high-rise towers and pedestrian-focused retail in a unified development, the CPIC Xintiandi Commercial Center extends the fabric of its historic neighborhood, drawing on its unique character as inspiration for the development’s human-scale design and rich material expression. The 250m tall Signature Tower at the western edge of the project is the most notable on the skyline and is curvilinear in plan and tapered in section to coexist gracefully with the adjacent park. Its façade integrates staggered pairs of two-story-tall white metal fins, configured as arches reminiscent of the Shikumen Arch of historic Shanghai. 2

Project at KPF (On-going) 2018-2021 | New York, NY Principal: Rob Whitlock | Supervisor: Reilly Hogan Competition; Concept; SD Reinforcing the pedestrian-focused ethos of the city’s Design District, Tower 36 brings Class-A office space to the gateway of Miami Beach, contributing to the area’s evolution into a true mixed-use neighborhood. The 47-story tower (635 feet tall) is to have 300k sf of offices, 30k sf of commercial uses, and 671 parking spaces. A defining architectural feature of the tapered tower is its glass façade, which reveals terraces on all office floors arranged in a configuration that conveys a sense of movement across the building. Detailed with light bronze soffit accents, these outdoor spaces provide tenants with enhanced views and a direct connection to their surroundings.

This is an opportunity to both design a significantly scaled and prominent mixed-use complex in Zhuhai, getting more traction there, particularly for our Shenzhen office, as well as serve as a model for effective interoffice collaboration, in this case between New York, London, Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Shanghai.

This is an opportunity, decades later, to continue the design of the second of three towers to be built on a site originally master planned by KPF. The office tower is connected to a wintergarden, adjacent to KPF-designed 311 South Wacker tower.
The project is an urban regeneration project that is 80% residential and the rest commercial. It includes a 180-meter tall residential tower with about 30,000 sqm of low-rise retail and F+B that needs to follow the original Shanghai Li-non city fabric including several historic buildings. The design of the new buildings should not be replicas of the old, but still be sensitive to the existing architectural character of the area. The new and the old buildings should merge together creating a harmonious neighborhood. When completed, this development will be a pioneer of premium sustainable urban regeneration project. 23

Our team worked from reconfiguration options, conceptural design to construction drawings and FF&E. We work verylosely with client, GC and fabricators, to solve design issues. While taking budget into considerations, we try very hard to make sure the built condition can be as close to our initial design intentions as possible.

Prefab Pop-up Stores
Private Client 2020 | Shanghai + Guangzhou, CN Lead Designer, partnership with Qiu Jin Full service (Built) The Pop-up Store centers around 3 ideas: activation of public space, versatility, and sustainability. The store was initially installed on a rectangular plaza in front of a shopping mall in Shanghai during summer. The client wishes to deploy the store in other cities but have not been determined subsequent sites during design phase. The design aims to promote the surrounding public space, providing a place to stay for people to enjoy the summer on a vast & open plaza. We dedicate more than 75% of the roofed area completely open to public by keeping the core function of preparing coffee/tea minimal. Moreover, we designed a “Bubble pool” as an urban attraction that kids and adults can interact with. The pop-up store adopts a robust modular system to adapt to any future sites. We designed 3 types of primary modules which provides shade and shelter from rain. They can act as individual kiosks. Or in large numbers, they form a linear corridor of any shape to enclose or sub-divide public space. A series of secondary lightweight furniture modules is designed to attach to primary modules. They can be easily swapped out for different future programs.

The modules are easy to assemble onsite. After its debut in Shanghai, the store was disassembled, then shipped and installed in Guangzhou later in winter. Modules were rearranged to respond to the new circular site, forming a pair of “C” curves instead of a single “S” curve in Shanghai. All modules were reused.

GSD Core Studio Work 2016 | New York City, NY Instructor: Felipe Correa Collaborater: Loren Rapport; Carla Wijaya To understand the site better, we examined the broader urban morphologies at play in the New York City metro area, and theirs role in shaping the urban block. A series of analytical drawings were constructed - in plan view - at three different scales: Metro scale, Borough scale and Site scale. In Metro scale, we examined the land infill and excavation over a time spectrum of more than two centuries. In Borough scale we discovered the relationship of program and topography. And Site scale is projective, showing how the combination of this analysis paired with the material from block inventory can generate a new set of block typologies at the scale of the site. In our case, we manipulated the ground to generate different topography and showed the gradation of programs in relationship with topography.

From our perspective, light manufacture, and all other related industry shall not stretch themselves as barrier between the city and the water, but should be integrated into daily experience at neighborhood and urban scale in the 21st century. What we proposed is a two-face working industry waterfront which ensures the publicity and uses waterfront as the showcase of industry. The physical co-existence of residential, manufacture, entertainment and open spaces generates both production and social capital.

For operation, we see our design not as a fixed project, but as a framework for interpretation. The publicity and accessibility of the waterfront, a shared underground infrastructure and the mix-used condition are general rules. But each building can be designed by individual developer, and the waterfront can be maintained by private developer in return for policy support. What we proposed is a mix-used working industry waterfront that is situated in and contributing to the city. The future of industry is open to the public. The physical co-existence generates both production and social capital.

2-A URBAN SPINE - URBAN DESIGN GSD Studio Work 2017 | New York City, NY Instructor: Moshe Safdie Collaboraters: Rob Meyerson; Camila Gutierrez Plata The High Line in New York, although evolving circumstantially, conceived in an entirely different era and context, has served as an urban spine, hovering over the New York grid below.While the High Line itself is in many ways successful, the ongoing development that is being built around it is not informed by effective urban design guidelines aimed at enhancing the spine, but rather built to overcrowd and compromise it. the High Line does not allow connections to the buildings that surround it. The question would be whether a newlyconceived spine can be a generator for a city that primarily consists of high-rise towers. 38

SITE PLAN
The concept is an expansion of the High Line into an integrated three-dimensional combination of linear park and commercial marketplace. That is to say integrating park and street life, free of vehicular traffic, along which high-rise residential and office development and community facilities can be constructed. The program includes high rise office and residential, cultural facilities, multi-level retail, and a school, which we will re-appropriate along a new urban spine running five city blocks north extending the current termination point of the High Line.

THE STREET AS "THE HIGH LINE" By sinking the Spine, the design give people walking on the streets the High Line experience. One of the most distinct experience of highline is the seperation from the ground and looking down. The Spine design digs into the ground, revealing the underground world. This inverts the relationship between the street and the spine, making the street itself intothe new High Line.

Instead of a linear path, we conceive the spine also as earthwork - natural, smooth, hilly. The curvy landscape contrast with the regular, rigid man-made Manhattan grid, providing an alternative way to get around the city.

GSD Studio Work 2017 | Zurich, Switzerland Instructor: Markus Schaefer; Hiromi Hosoya Collaborater: Konstantina Tzemou The project focuses on the vertical integration of industrial production into urban life. Urban production today is dense, transparent and glocal. Most importantly, it is based on the coexistence and direct interaction with civic uses, allowing industrial activities to participate in a changing culture and economy. In this context, the project proposes the programmatic augmentation of the site in Zurich, Oerlikon by sliding into the industrial complex layers of civic nature. Through combining working, living, making, learning and recreation facilities, the city is re-mixed to the maximum and the district enjoys economic diversity as well as urban friction. 48

In this building everyone will have his own personal mobility device. And the design discards the installation of elevators. Because personal mobility device is more energy efficient and has a greater handling capacity during peak rush-hours. To better accommodate personal mobility device, the entire builidng is built on a continous ramp, like today's parking structures. In a building where travel is encouraged, one may have traveled several miles within a building per day and you won’t even realize that. You will wake a different route to your desk every day, and enjoy the view and things occurring along the way.

CAMPUS CONTEXT Situated in a densed campus environment, it is crucial to react to its surroundings. The site is located in the core area on the campus of Tsinghua University, to the west of the university's main north-south axis. Axis 1 relates to the main building of Tsinghua and axis2 relates to a road which runs througn the main building. Arches are constantly persisting in the architectures of Tsinghua University. They can be spotted from the contemporary buildings as well as the classical architectures which are more than a hundred years old. It is safe to say that arch is the symbol of Tsinghua University. SHIPYARD REVITALIZATION FOR DRAMATIC ARTS
Yale-Tsinghua Joint Studio 2014 | Tianjin, CN Instructor: Zhu Wenyi; Liu Jian Collaborater: Sun Xudong Tianjin, the industrial center of northern China, is now undergoing fast urbanization. Xinhe Shipyard is among the most famous and historical shipbuilding company of northern China, its relocation will leave a rich industrial heritage along the Haihe River, mother river of Tianjin. Beijing, the center of China drama, has grown too expensive for emerging drama artists. Tianjin, only 30min away from Beijing by CRH, is perfect for experimental dramatical artform. The design aims to fully harness the IDENTITY of shipbuilding facilities, and turn the currently segregated site into a welcoming URBAN destination.

The grand theater is a class A theater, which can accomodate more than 800 people at a time. Converted from the prefabrication workshop, the grand theater well keeps the orginal trusses.

Beijing Film Studio is currently surrounded by a continuious wall, with only one entrance open to the public on the east side. One can say the stuido has enprisoned itself by its own walls. The accessiblity of the site is very low, which is why you can find few people in the almost abandoned studio, even though it has large area of trees, and is very good place to rest. Though Beijing Film Academy is just beside the hitorical site, there is no direct access between the two flim group.

Tsinghua Studio Work 2013 | Beijing, CN Instructor: Rao Rong; Zhou Rong Collaborater: Chi Xu This used to be the main production area, which includes the Maga Studio and a set of three studios. Due to its confidentiality requirements, nothing can be seen from outside. It has become an open square for movies. It is a paradise of joy during daytime as wll as a perfect place for awarding ceremonies in the evening. BEFORE

The cinema is constructed within the mega studio, which was the core building of the old studio. The abandoned site is now besieged by high rise buildings. What used to be giant is now invisible for passersby. Lifted high in the air, the cinema will be visible from main city street, and will serve as the site's new landmark. The cinema stands out from the roof of the old film studio, breaking away from the stubborn style of the original architecture. Seen as a flower grown from the old studio, this structure symbolizes the revival and reborn of the Beijing Film Studio. The group studios originally consisted of three film studios. I turn two of them into a film museum and the last into a hotel. One of the characteriscis of the original building is there are supporting structures in front of the three large studios. My measure is to turn this supporting structures into semi-open grey spaces, creating a buffer layer between the main plaza and the functions behind.

The pop-up shop is composed of 11 different panels. They form the panel system. Each panel serves its own function and purpose. It is through the various combinations of these panels that the shop can form different shapes. The connections between different panels is the key to this design, which is the innovative use of Hafale's Minifix and aluminum frame.

Tsinghua Studio Work 2013 | Beijing, CN Instructor: Terrence Curry Collaborater: Cai Zeyu, Chen Kun, Sun Guangbiao, Chen Yu & Wu Chaoyun Pop-up shops are opportunistic, like mushrooms: when the conditions are just right, suddenly they appear. They are mobile, and are easy to transport and assemble on site. They can be packed up in a few minutes. They are distinctive, calling attention to themselves, attracting customers. They are practical and well adapted for selling a particular type of product.

STREET MODE
The purpose of this pop-up shop is to sell T-shirts that are compressed in cans. The package looks very much like soda cans and can be stored very efficiently. The package itself can also be a very attractive display element.
The life of the street is ever changing, ever-evolving, always adapting. New opportunities present themselves continuously throughout the day, from season to season, from location to location: tourists, holiday celebrations, convenience shops, magazines, books, knick-knacks, handicrafts, snacks. A small business person needs to see an opportunity, be able to move fast, find a location, set-up shop and start doing business before the opportunity disappears. The shop was designed to fit into 3 possible forms- 2 forms for selling in different kinds of spaces (in plaza or streets) and 1 form for moving the shop. The transformation between these forms is done by switching the relative position of the panels, in this process, our modular system and the flexible hardware system played an important role. Moving mode is for fast and convenient transportation between different locations. Its mininal size makes it easy for storage. This mode is mobile, and is easy to transport and assemble on site. It can be packed up in a few minutes. Street mode is for narrow alleys and crowded places. Only 1m in width, the shop can be deployed without causing too much congestion, while no sacrifice is made in function. The life of the street is ever changing, ever-evolving, always adapting. Plaza mode is for sites which are relatively large and vast. The aim is to stretch out as much as possible. It is distinctive, calling attention to themselves, attracting customers. Four square meters in area is large enough to provide shelter for 3 vendors at a time.

"Compared to earth burial, we believe this to be a humane alternative to retain the identity of the deceased, and to share his story with the city. The Archive will exhibit the storage units of participants passing during the latest five-year period, with random rotation, on the surface of People’s Square. Your husband’s life will become part of the city’s collective image for everyone to reflect upon."
Traditional circulation of a skyscraper goes from bottom to top. In a typical tall building, elevator cores are grouped into height zones, leaving a lot of non-stop shaft void in the lower and middle portion of the tower. In Aeroscraper, we consider the sky as the new ground, thus circulation can go both ways: top down and bottom up. To develop it even further, we can have several “ground” floors across the entire height of the building to break this 800m skyscraper into several normal tall buildings.
