WUSA 2020-2021 Student Planner - Intro

Page 1

The Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA) is proud to present the 2020-2021 edition of the University of Waterloo student planner. This year’s planner has been revamped to be more responsive, making it easier to keep up with the many changes we experience as undergrad students. The world saw plenty of changes with the COVID-19 pandemic. Pulling this agenda together during that time definitely had its challenges: when and how would we get these to you?; do we start the calendar in September or January?; will local businesses be able to support us by purchasing ads? What we ended up with is now in your hands – an agenda that isn’t tied down to dates, can keep you feeling organized between online classes, track your personal goals, schedule in those video chats with friends, and can be picked up and put down throughout your academic career. You can even use it as a personal journal to remember your time with us! Adapting to the changes that COVID-19 brought on has helped us to tailor our approach to better fit your needs — something we’ll surely bring with us to future planners. Design-wise, we took inspiration from the popular bullet journal style. The minimalist, de-cluttered concept of this year’s agenda pages gives you more control; you can use this whenever and however you need it. This planner would not be possible without the hard work of the WUSA Marketing and Communications department, who design and prepare the planner each spring term. We would also like to thank all the companies who advertised with us this year. It is through their support that we can continue offering the WUSA student planner to students free of charge. Many of these businesses offer student-friendly prices year-round. By supporting them, you also support your undergraduate student association. We hope this will be a useful tool for not only your studies but also your work, health, and happiness!

WELCOME from your exec Hey undergrads, we’re excited to welcome you to the University of Waterloo! Whether you’re on campus or studying from home, we hope you’re prioritizing your physical and mental health. We’re here to help you with that starting with this year’s planner to keep you organized between online classes, track your goals, checkoff your to-do’s, schedule video chats with friends, and pencil in some you time! Now that you know what this handy planner is for, let’s get into who we are and what we’re here for. We’re Waterloo undergrads who’ve been elected by your fellow Warriors to represent you and the first thing you should know, is you’re one of us now. As a student, you’re automatically a member of WUSA and we’re here to make sure you know what that means. Above all else, it means you can rely on us to have your back. We represent your voice on issues like tuition, mental health, housing, campus safety, and transit, while providing services like clubs, health and wellness supports, and academic policy and discipline assistance. And we like to have fun, too. Getting involved in student life and finding where you belong in your Warrior community has never felt more important. That’s why some of our clubs and services are offering virtual events, supports and resources. Whether online or on campus, we’ll be sure to let you know about upcoming special events like Cultural Caravan and Wellness Days. Check out and join one of our student-run services, our hundreds of clubs, run for election on student government or apply to work with us part-time. No matter where you find yourself this term, we encourage you to stay connected with us: your Exec, your fellow WUSA members, and your student association. We’re happy to welcome you to UWaterloo, and we can’t wait to meet you!

We are here for you: RECENT MILESTONES Advocacy takes time and hard work. With over 50 years of experience, rest assured - we’re pretty good at what we do. When we’re met with resistance, we respond with persistence. And when we feel run down by the grind, we find motivation in our membership, the power of our student voice. Take pride in being part of a student association that is recognized, respected, and heard by decision makers. We feel the most reward when we get to celebrate a milestone with you. Here’s a look at some of our recent efforts and results.

Mental Health Calling on Counselling Services to support racially marginalized students, including diversifying the counselors available to students

10

Canada Emergency Student Benefit Together with UCRU, we submitted recommendations to the federal government leading to Canada’s largest financial aid package for students

Campus Safety Urged the provincial government to fund safety initiatives on campus, resulting in doubled funding for Women’s Campus Safety Grant

Public Transportation

International Student Tuition

Trans Student Bursary

Negotiated lower year-over-year UPass fee adjustments, saving you money each year relative to other students in the region

Advocated on tuition predictability for international students, prompting implementation of a 5% cap on in-cohort increases

Introduced the Trans Student Bursary to provide access to funding for legal name and sex designation changes on birth registrations or certificates

ADVOCACY

FIGHTING FOR A BETTER TOMORROW: • Health and Wellness

• Quality of Education

• Accessibility

• Diversity and Equity

• Transportation

• Academic Rights

• Affordable Education

• Student Spaces

• Campus Safety

• Accountability and Transparency

• Housing and Tenant Rights

• Co-op and Experiential Learning

Here’s how it works: VOTE You (Waterloo undergrads) choose your Executives in the WUSA elections. Your Executive hire Associate Vice Presidents to help them work with student groups on campus and our federal & provincial partners.

COLLECT We gather your feedback on the challenges impacting your student experience.

RECOMMENDATION

CREATE Using your feedback, we get to the root of the problem. Chances are, if it’s a challenge you’re facing, others are too. We then research evidence-based solutions and create recommendations for change. Finally, we figure out who the decision makers are and strategize the best way to bring your concerns to the table. SOLUTION UW

ADVOCATE We meet with University faculty and administration, as well as politicians at all levels of government to advocate for those recommendations to become reality.

Sometimes we get what we ask for, other times we reach a compromise, and in some cases our conversations with decision makers are met with resistance. When that happens, we respond with persistence by keeping the conversation going and continuing to bring the student voice to the table. Get involved! Contact your Executive to talk about how we can improve your time here! 11

How Are You Feeling Today? Support is available. Talk to someone.

SOME FRIENDLY REMINDERS Be gentle with yourself. Recognize that you are going through a stressful experience and it’s okay to fail and try again. Make time for yourself every day. Set aside at least a few moments each and every day when you can be by yourself and in a quiet space. You cannot control what other people choose to think, feel, or do. If you try to, you may feel inadequate, frustrated, angry, or depressed.

FEELING OVERWHELMED? Breathe in for 4 seconds. Hold for 4 seconds. Breathe out for 4 seconds. Repeat until more relaxed. Think of 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, and 1 thing you taste. 23

Sexual Violence & Consent Sexual violence is a broad umbrella term that can include sexual assault (any type of sexual activity or contact that you do not consent to) and sexual harassment (the making of unwanted sexual advances or obscene remarks). It can also include stalking, online harassment such as sharing photos without your consent, indecent exposure and sex trafficking.

WHAT IS CONSENT? Consent is the active, continuous, informed, and voluntary agreement to engage in any sexual or physical contact. Consent cannot be given when someone is unable to give consent, such as when incapacitated due to alcohol or drug consumption, or when they do not understand what is being asked of them. Consent cannot be implied, and can be revoked at any time without fear of repercussion. Consent cannot be given when being threatened or coerced, or when induced to engage in the contact by someone in a position of power, trust or authority. Consenting to one type of contact does not mean that consent is given for every type of contact. For example, someone may consent to a hug but not to a kiss. Consent is required regardless of the relationship status or sexual history between the individuals involved. Previous agreement does not equal current consent. Consent cannot be given by anyone other than the person participating in the sexual contact.
