scenery, warm hospitality and tough yet exhilarating riding. This is the heart of the deciduous fruit country – a region known for its unforgiving summers and harsh
winters; trails through rocky outcrops, climbs steeper than the imagination can fathom; and descents that combine a wicked technical twist with views to
cherish forever. From hand-built and smoothly sculpted trails to rough and loose terrain – these routes always reward the adventurous.

2019 RACE GUIDE
This race has grown from strength to strength over the last seven years thanks to the clear vision of our objective to establish the world’s leading bicycle stage race right here in Ceres. There are not many places where one can find such a culmination of excellence in a race venue, the catering, the routes, the people or the community. The local people and, more specifically, the
landowners have embraced the Tankwa Trek and have made it their own. The partnerships forged here have laid the platform for the event’s current success as well as for future growth. This year’s first timers, top amateurs and the world’s best professional mountain bikers will gather for a very special race in a very special place - the Koue Bokkeveld. We are proud to bring you all the action live on all 4 stages, so no excuse to miss out – please make sure that you are tuned in. Enjoy the action, on or off the bike. Henco Rademeyer Race Director Dryland Event Management

A BRAND NEW STAGE to showcase the tracks in and around Kaleo. Ernst van Dyk kept this beautifully cut singletrack under wraps for many years, letting them settle like a good red wine, but now is the time to reveal it all. A punchy 29km’s are in store that flow through the orchards, past rocky outcrops and over dam walls. Prepare for steep, short climbs and magical descents! These tracks were meticulously built by Ernst himself and are part of his “private reserve of trails” that feature the Southern (and perhaps most beautiful) side of the Howbill farms. The stage is designed with spectators in mind , so we invite you to join us in celebrating the latest in Tankwa initiative - a brand new stage one! Expect the faster riders to finish this in about 50 minutes and slower riders in around 100 minutes.

SAKKIE AND HANNES HANEKOM, who need no introduction as mountain bikers, are responsible for this amazing route. The track into the valley follows an old ox wagon trail that boasts fast, winding singletrack and jeep track descents. Riders will experience rocky outcrops that hug the foothills of vast mountains towering over the valley. The climb of the day is a 12km traverse through pine plantations that eventually overlooks the Tulbagh on the right and the stunning Witzenberg Valley on the left. A well-earned, but tricky descent brings riders back into the heart of the valley. After a day of mountain biking bliss, a short tar road section leads to the exit via the ox wagon track and just 15km’s of the stage remain. This will be the second hardest day of the 2019 race.

A BRAND NEW SINGLE TRACK takes riders away from Kaleo through the orchards of the Bokkeveld and towards the Ceres valley. A singletrack descent aptly labelled the DU TOIT drop awaits which stretches for 3km’s with a 10% decline! Once in the valley, riders will tackle a few more old trails cleaned up by local farmer Mauritz Walters and Tankwa Trek singletrack guru, Ernst van Dyk. They have planned a tough but very rewarding day out with four waterpoints and over 2000 meters of climbing in store! Undulating farm roads lead to the infamous Merino Monster – the climb of all climbs. Taking into account the weather, distance covered before the climb, and testing gradient; the Merino Monster is possibly the meanest ascent in South African mountain biking!

SINGLE TRACK HERE WE COME, Koue Bokkeveld style! The stage starts with undulating roads that allow riders to share war stories from the days gone by. Jeep tracks will then take riders towards Morester, a farm owned by Charl van der Merwe. Mountain biking mad Charl leaves his home for days on end armed only with a bike and a shovel. His passion is to cut new singletrack around the harsh and incredible rock formations that the area is renowned for. Around 30km’s of sculptured singletrack will be unleashed for this stage - trails that will truly create a riding experience like no other!
