Power Tri couple
clinch 70.3 Cunnama claims
maiden title on African soil
Four in a row
for Swallow
Local star Stuart Marais in his first race as a Professional athlete, is intensely focused as he mentally prepares for the start. It’s always a balance between getting the image and invading very personal and intense space. Using a long zoom lens solves the problem. Stu would miss the podium by only 14 seconds.

Power Tri couple clinch 70.3 The 2014 IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa event in Buffalo City was filled with excitement from beginning to end with James Cunnama and Jodie Swallow coming up trumps on Sunday 26 January 2014. The speculated fairytale ending came to be when South African James Cunnama and girlfriend Jodie Swallow (GBR) managed to snag a double victory with Cunnama finishing in 04:05:00 and Swallow in 04:37:00.
Rising South African star Kyle Buckingham, 10km into the 90 km bike leg and looking fresh as a daisy. He would later fade and finish in a very credible 9th place for his first race as a pro.

Romain Guillaume of France led for the entire bike course, but was overtaken by James Cunnama (ZA) and Will Clark (GB). This image was taken while hanging from the back of a course motorbike.

The famous and brutal rolling hills of East London. Every triathlete’s nightmare. It is difficult to make this an original image as everybody and his brother has done it in the past. I love the feel that the black and white processing gives it. Photo: Chris Hitchcock

The roller coaster ride out of East London. The stunning scenery couldn’t take away the pain of the headwind on the way back to transition. Even the helicopter was being blown around.

Belgian Michael van Cleven collapses next to the Pump water station at the finish. High humidity saw many of the European athletes who train in the Northern Hemisphere winter suffer. The young girls behind him were totally star struck

Ladies winner Jodie Swallow had an injury earlier in the year that meant she had top train by running in a swimming pool. It was good for her recovery, but did nothing to harden up the soles of her feet. She ran for kilometres with this insane blister. What a champ. Photo: Chris Hitchcock

Cancer survivor Chantel Rall put her recovery to good use, and by finishing the race gave cancer a kick up the arse. She is now motivating others to work through the disease. What a champ.

I love this photo. I feel that I should use the word juxtaposition, but I will restrain myself. One thing is for certain, the 3500 athletes who flood into East London for the race, bring a much needed and appreciated cash injection to East London.

Dream finish. Happy winners, James Cunnama and Jodie Swallow, are a couple away from the race course, sharing a home in Stellenbosch. Winning together must have been very special for them, and the crowd at the finish line loved it. More info at www.ironman703.co.za
