Wildlife wars fuelling terror From Page 1 Researchers have asked governments to listen to communities whose livelihoods are inter-connected with wildlife in addressing the poaching menace. The experts say the move will be one way of ending human trafficking and child slavery. The appeal follows findings of a new research that suggests that the global fall in wildlife numbers is connected to an increase in human trafficking and child slavery. Ecologists say a shortage of wild animals means more labourers in many countries are needed for survival. And children are often used to fill the gap for cheap workers,
especially in the fishing industry. The decline in wildlife species has also escalated terrorism and destabilisation of regions, the researchers say. They claim the rise in value of items such as tiger organs and elephant ivory have led to an explosion of trafficking by powerful groups. The authors point to the Janjaweed, the Lord’s Resistance Army, AlShabab and Boko Haram, all of whom they say have been involved in poaching ivory and rhino horns to fund terrorist attacks. They say simple declarations of war on poachers which have been the standard response by most governments to the events are misguided
and missing the bigger picture. “We can continue to try and cover it up with little bits of enforcement. But until we start to address the bigger issue which is poor governance and the global free for all, we are not going to address the tide of conflict,” said Prof Justin Brashares of the University of California. He led the study whose report was published in the journal, Science. Prof Brashares claims harvesting of wild animals from the sea and land is an $400bn (Sh34 trillion) annual enterprise and supports the livelihoods of 15 per cent of the world’s total population. They say criminal groups such as Al-Shabaab, Boko Haram and The
Lord’s Resistance Army are exploiting the avenues to fund terror activities. They argue that the rapid depletion of species has increased the need for slave labour. Declining fisheries across the world mean boats often have to travel further in harsher conditions for fishermen find harvest. This is where pirates and criminal gangs take advantage. “That’s how the whole Somali conflict started as fishermen started going out with guns, trying to fine boats that were fishing illegally in their waters,” Prof Brashares says. “There’s a direct link between scarcity of wildlife, labour demands of
harvests and the dramatic increase in child slavery,” he said. “Many communities that rely on the wildlife resources don’t have the economic capacity to hire more labourers. So they instead look for cheap labour, and in many areas this has led to the outright purchasing of children as slaves,” he says. The researchers have called for better understanding of factors that underlie fish and wildlife declines from local perspectives. They have also proposed for interdisciplinary approaches as the best options for facilitating the understanding.
3,000 evicted Zimbabwe farmers may be compensated Between 2000 and 2001, about 3,000 mainly white farmers were evicted from their properties in Zimbabwe as President Robert Mugabe sought re-election and implemented a populist land reform that gave the land to black farmers. The move left 18 people dead in farm invasions that led to the collapse of the country’s export-based economy. Hyperinflation kicked in, and reached 231,000,000 per cent in 2008. The farmers may finally get compensated through a process backed by the World Bank. The international lender is mediating the process and is looking to issue Zimbabwean bonds backed by its Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency to compensate the farmers for losses, the World Bank’s Country Manager and the farmers’ union told Bloomberg. “Compensation bonds is only dead end: Farmers Duncan Parkes (R-L) his wife Isla, Hamish Turner, Rob Fergus, Selby Black and Stuart Parkes talk to journalists one of a variety of methods that have been after they were evicted by war veterans from their farm in Mayfields 20 Km north of Harare August 3, 2000. Nairobi Chapel priest, wife carjacked
Only 12 per cent of lonely Kenyans find love online
A Nairobi Chapel priest was last night carjacked and robbed of cash, mobile phones and other valuables before being dumped in Karen. Pastor Oscar Muriu and his wife Beatrice were driving home when three gunmen took over their Toyota Harrier and robbed them Sh7, 000, two mobile phones and other valuables. Police say no arrest has been made so far and a hunt for the men is on. The couple was not hurt in the robbery. Murui has served as the Senior Pastor of the Nairobi Chapel since 1991.
Despite many Kenyans using platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus to look for companionship, only 12 per cent find partners for a serious relationship. According to a survey by Katindi Njonjo from the Institute of Economic Affairs, the outcomes from the use of social media vary greatly depending on what people are looking for. “This is a first step towards the tracking of different youth indicators captured in different documents for purposes of providing a global overview of youth issues in Kenya,” says

Many of those on the social media (69 per cent) upload photos, while 56 per cent of the total join fan groups interested in popular brands. The same number of people (56 per cent) regularly contribute to discussions regarding topics like politics, religion, relationships and current affairs. Njonjo indicates that only 6 per cent of all the Kenyans using social media to look for jobs get employed.
One is three times more likely to be infected by Hepatitis than HIV, with other medics warning that youngsters are becoming more victims to this deadly infection. Experts say the viral disease, which damages liver cells easily spreads because many infected people do not know they have it. The latest study by Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) reveals
that of 150, 000 blood donors last year, 3, 000 tested positive to hepatitis B virus. This was a figure against the 1200 who tested positive to HIV. What is more worrying is the revelation from doctors in India, who told the Daily News that they are encountering more youngster patients of between 20 and 40 years KEMRI head of Infectious and Par-
asitic Diseases Research Programme Professor Elijah Songok says hepatitis is a crisis despite the intervention staged against the disease since it was declared a national disaster more than a decade ago. Prof Songok says little attention is given to this disease and called for aggressive campaigns against it. He says: “Hepatitis is now a fullblown crisis. We can no longer
afford to look away but confront it head-on like we did the HIV.” The research institute says the seriousness of the disease is explained by the more than a third of liver patients showing infection from the Hepatitis virus. WHO says two billion people suffer from hepatitis B while more than 240 million suffer from chronic variation of the disease.
Women too, gain from male cut
Male circumcision not only reduces men’s risk of being infected with the Aids virus by 60 per cent but also indirectly benefits women by lessening their risk of contracting the HIV. The findings of a study released last week in Melbourne, Australia during the world’s Aids forum showed that women who only had sex with circumcised partners had a 15 per cent lower risk of being infected by HIV compared with women who also had uncircumcised partners. “The risk reduction is small, but it is a start,” researcher Kevin Jean of France’s National Agency for AIDS Research (ANRS) told the audience at the 20th International Aids conference. But another research whose report was also released at the conference warned that circumcision should not be taken as a 100 per cent measure in reducing HIV/Aids. After conducting their research in Nyanza region among the Luo community (where circumcision is uncommon) University of

Illinois, Chicago, researchers said people must continue to use other protective measures to complement any gains brought about by male circumcision. “Male circumcision is sup-
posed to be complemented by use of condoms as suggested by the World Health Organisation,” lead researcher Nelli Westercamp said. The World Health Organisation recommends voluntary
circumcision as an option for men in 14 sub-Saharan countries struggling with high rates of the Human ImmunoDeficiency Virus. An earlier presentation at the Melbourne conference
found that offering men compensation in the form of food vouchers was a useful incentive for circumcision. Most countries in the voluntary circumcision campaign remain far short of reaching
their target numbers. Investigators have found that many men are deterred by the loss of wages from time off work to have the operation, and the cost of travelling to and from the clinic.

Highway footbridges a risk to pedestrians, says union
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) should first ensure safety on footbridges before asking pedestrians to use them, a union has said. An association of motorists also want adverts put on the footbridges pulled down because they make the walkways dark and unsafe
for users. The Motorists Association of Kenya chairman Peter Murima says the footbridges should remain well lit to ensure safety of pedestrians. His appeal comes barely days after NTSA started arresting pedestrians who ignore the bridges to cross roads at dangerous points.
The authority is concerned over the high rate at which Kenyans continue to lose lives under preventable circumstances. More than 100 pedestrians have been killed in Nairobi alone due to road traffic accidents at points where the footbridges are just overhead. NTSA Director General

Francis Meja says the agency is rehabilitating all the 33 footbridges and pedestrian tunnels in Nairobi. He said his office will encourage pedestrians to stick to the footbridges. NTSA says 692 of the 1, 484 road deaths recorded since January this year involve passengers, majority of whom
have been hit while crossing highways in Nairobi. Pedestrians and users of intermediate modes of transport, he adds, contributed up to 1,030 of the deaths, representing 69.4 per cent of the toll. “This number could significantly come down if people started using
footbridges,” he said. Meanwhile, road users say the footbridges are often dirty and littered with human dung. They also say it is risky to use the crossings as street boys and thugs have taken control of most of the facilities from where they mug and steal from passers-by.

Scientists discover brain cells that can arrest eating Scientists have discovered a central hub of brain cells that may put the brakes on a desire to eat. And switching on these neurons can stop feeding immediately, according to the Nature Neurosciences report. After a study on mice, researchers say the findings may one day contribute to therapies for obesity and anorexia. Experts say this sheds light on the many complex nerve circuits involved in appetite control. Scientists from the California Institute of Technology suggest the nerve cells act as a central switchboard, combining and relaying many different messages in the brain to help reduce food intake. Using laser beams they were able to stimulate the neurons - leading to a complete and immediate stop to eating. Prof David Anderson, lead author of the study told the BBC: “It was incredibly surprising. It was like you could just flick a switch and prevent the animals from feeding.” Researchers then used chemicals to mimic a variety of scenarios - including feelings of satiety, malaise, nausea and a bitter taste. They found the neurons were active in all situations, suggesting they may be integral in the response to many diverse stimuli. The cells worked rapidly when mice had taken a full meal, indicating they may also play an important role in the prevention of overeating. “These cells represent the first well-defined hub that inhibits feeding in the brain. Prof Anderson said.
UN Security Council calls for ceasefire in Gaza With more than 1,000 people killed in the Israel-Hamas conflict, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Monday and announced “strong support ... for an immediate and unconditional humanitarian cease-fire” in Gaza. The cease-fire would allow for the delivery of “urgently needed assistance,” the Security Council said. The 15-nation council also proclaimed its support for “a comprehensive
peace based on the vision of a region where two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, live side by side in peace with secure and recognized borders as envisioned in Security Council resolution 1850 (2008).” The call for a cease-fire came after Hamas and Israel began firing again at each other Sunday after a temporary cease-fire failed. A temporary truce on Saturday had enabled medical supplies to be brought
into Gaza, families to emerge from shelters and people to dig out the dead from piles of rubble. But Sunday, Israel said that because of “incessant rocket fire” out of Gaza, it had restarted its Operation Protective Edge, even as Hamas said it agreed to a 24-hour UN-mediated cease-fire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the call by Hamas for a cease-fire, saying the group violated its own call for a brief stoppage
in violence. “We hope we can get a sustainable quiet as soon as possible. I think the only path to do that is by adopting the Egyptian initiative” and by addressing two underlying issues, he told CNN’s “State of the Union with Candy Crowley.” He said those issues are peace for Israel through demilitarizing Gaza, and social and economic relief for the residents of Gaza. Wind power project to reduce high bills As the cost of energy continues to rise, the Kenya Electricity Generation Company (KenGen) will next month start feeding an additional 20 megawatts (MW) to the national grid. The move is expected to improve power supply and reduce costs of power. The extra energy is produced at its Wind Farm in Ngong, in Kajiado. KenGen CEO Albert Mugo says the 20 MW project is at the final stages and should be complete by August 2014. “The 20MW has been done as two separate projects where we have
installed eight turbines generating 6.8MW at a cost of €12 million (Sh1.4 billion) that was advanced by the government of Belgium,” says Mugo. “The second one we have 16 turbines with a generation capacity of 13.4MW at a cost of €20 million (Sh2.4 billion) that was given by the government of Spain.” Power prices have gone up in recent months following a poor rainy season between March and May. The insufficient supply led to a drop in power output from Kenya’s
hydroelectricity dams. This has led to the country increasingly relying on more costly diesel-fired thermal sources. KenGen says compared with other renewable sources, which include geothermal, hydro power is cheaper. In the past three months, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has said the cost of producing electricity has gone up by slightly over three per cent. This has caused households to pay an average of Sh4, 700 per month, up from Sh4, 300.

The US company has also warned that sales could dip in the current quarter. The announcement has scared investors and forced its shares to drop by six per cent. The investors are worried that the net loss is nearly double what had been predicted by experts. The loss has been attributed to heavy investing the company has done to try and build up the business. citywallet Coffee houses associated with prosperous Kenyans Kenyans who visit coffee houses are considered to be the rich and sophisticated type. A new report by research group Euromonitor has revealed that professionals are increasingly relying on coffee to keep them going in a demanding work environment. Euromonitor researchers say in Kenya, as in the West, coffee is increasingly being perceived as an energy booster and is associated with performance. It is served in offices during breaks, at conferences and other formal business meetings. It is also popular among students during exam periods. The country’s drinking trend was spurred by the introduction of coffee houses in 1999. “People thought we were crazy to try to sell coffee to Kenyans,” said Jon Wagner, a US former relief worker who co-founded the Java Coffee House almost 15 years ago. That was before revenues grew every quarter since. “It was virgin territory but we believed a good cup of coffee would always find a market.” While Java’s stores initially proved a hit with expatriates, more than 70 per cent of customers are now Kenyans, mostly under 40s. Kenyans spend at least Sh150 each time they visit a coffee house. Devoted coffee drinkers make an average five visits a week to spend no less than Sh3,300 a month on the brew. Some spend up to Sh10,000 a month on popular varieties like lattés, cappuccinos, macchiato, espressos and mochas.

NATURAL HABITAT: Hollowed out tree trunks are an ideal dwelling for bees.
Beekeeper makes Sh3m a year from palm tree hives Tom Okello, a bee farmer from western Kenya, did not have the money to invest in modern hives so he went back to basics to try and expand his beekeeping venture. Hollowed out tree trunks have always made good natural dwelling for bees and Okello, while on a visit to the Uganda, chanced onto an idea to carve bee hives out of palm trees. Today, he makes

Bubblews and Bonzo Me, two social media platforms, are offering to pay users for their posted content. Bubblews, which came out of an extended test phase about a week ago, pays users for posts that attract traffic and advertisers. Another company, Bonzo Me, has been doing something similar since early July 2014. “I just feel like everyone on social networks has been taken advantage of for long enough,” said Michael Nusbaum, the creator Bonzo Me. “Facebook has been making a ton of money, and the people providing the

A statement from Joey Cosco from US based tech company, Business Insider, says that none of that money “ever touches the users’ pockets.” On the other hand, Bonzo Me is paying its users up to 80 per cent of its advertising revenue for the most popular posts. fore had to be more sharper, hence the use of palm tree to develop the hive.” To make the hives, the inner part of a mature palm is carefully extracted to leave a hollow section, creating a cylindrical structure. The hollow section is then cleaned and the hive is separated into two sections, one to house the queen bee and the other to house the honey from the
worker bees. Both open ends of the hollow palm are closed using pieces of iron sheets with one end having holes in it, which allow the worker bees to come and go as they please. The palm tree hive, which is about nine feet long, is then rested on a metallic stand under a tree. On a good season, using these improved palm tree
bee hives, Okello collects 25 kilos of honey while on a low season the amount of honey harvested does not go below 10 kilos. He says that this yield is much more than the current production from the conventional hives, which on a high side can produce about 10 kilos of honey and on the lower side produce as little as 3 kilos.

yoursay Fading Smiles Every time I look at our young ones walk holding hands with their parents, I broadly smile of the beautiful sight I see. I feel the parent is responsible. But, every time I see a drunk dad comfortably resting in a trench, the smile fades away drastically. Who is teaching those kids you left at home? Who is there to hold their hands and warn them when they are about to go astray? Young parents, you have to do something. Be responsible for your kids’ sake. – Emma Hamisi, Nairobi

Xiaomi’s Mi series is currently one of China’s highest-selling smartphone. The reasons for its success over American import iPhone are its low price and friendly OS. Xiaomi was co-founded by eight partners on June 6, 2010. In this year, the company launched its custom android-based firmware known as the MIUI. They launched their first
smartphone in 2011, marking the start of the Mi series. It was set up with the MIUI Android-based firmware which resembles Samsung’s TouchWiz and Apple’s iOS. In 2012 the Mi2 was launched and sold over 10 million Mi2 devices in three months. The Mi2 was also sold by wireless phone vendor Mobicity in the United States, Europe, UK, Australia and New Zealand. On September 25, 2013, Xiaomi announced its Mi3 smartphone, which again sold very well in China and neighbouring countries. By October 2013, Xiaomi was announced and reported as the fifth most-used smartphone brand in
China. In 2014, Xiaomi announced its international expansion they first ventured into Singapore. The Xiaomi Mi3 sold out within two minutes of the opening day sale in Singapore. Xiaomi’s first ever tablet, the RedMi Note was launched on March 17 2014. In April 2014, the comppany purchased a new domain – mi.com for $3.6 million (Sh316million). This made mi.com the most expensive domain name ever bought in China. Part of the company’s financial success has been the fact that it does not operate physicl stores. Instead, all sales are made from its website. The company also did away with traditional advertising and relies on social networking services as well as their own customers to help advertise its products.

Men have power to do all physical labour but women have the remote control Women have more power over men than the latter think. Samuel Johnson, a professor of psychology at Baruch College, US, says “nature has given women so much power that the law can only give them less. Women will always have power over men.” Men have power to do all physical labour but women have the remote control. A woman’s power over man dates back to Biblical days. The first man who was ever created, Adam, fell to the guile of the first woman, Eve. Samson, who was the strongest man in the world,
surrendered to Delilah. David, who killed a nine-foot Goliath, fell under the spell of Bethsheba. King Ahab, a powerful king of Egypt at the time, was under the mercy of his wife, Jezebel. In the hands of a woman he loves, a man is like butter. And it does not matter how powerful he is. Women have a way of wrapping aroundmen in their little finger and make them do whatever they choose because they are more discerning, calculating and thoughtful than men. They will learn a man’s weakness, know what button

to push and he will be on his knees begging for love. Women will use emotions to make most of decisions, whether good or bad. Such as she can die for a man who loves her and stands by her through thick and thin. She can even kill a man she has lived with all her life simply because he never returned her love. Femi Fani-Kayode, a Nigerian poet says: “The greatest weapon the devil has in his armoury are daughters of Jezebel and Delilah; those beautiful yet evil seducers whose mission in life is to destroy men.

Iron Lady, Strength of a Woman
Martha Karua When we talk of strong women with strong, defiant spirit who are steadfast and unwavering in making decisions, Martha Karua is top of mind. Born in Kirinyaga in 1957, she is the second born in a family of eight siblings; four girls and four boys. She studied law at the University
of Nairobi from 1977 to 1980. Between 1980 and 1981, she enrolled at the Kenya School of Law for the statutory postgraduate law course. She was a magistrate through-out the 1980s before plunging into politics at the age 35. She became the Democratic Party (DP) lawyer in 1991, and a year later became Gichugu MP. She later served in
various Cabinet posts. The Iron Lady at one time in her Kirinyaga District, Karua walked out on President Moi, who was then addressing a crowd in a stadium. She has been a leading champion of women’s rights through public interest litigation. Karua has also lobbied and advocated for laws that enhance and protect women’s
rights through her activities with women’s organisations, particularly the Federation of Kenya Women Lawyers and the League of Kenya Women Voters. During her stint as the Minister for Justice, she once had a heated argument with the Minister of Agriculture William Ruto at a Cabinet meeting as President Kibaki watched. In 2013, she vied for the presidency and lost, but ‘The Only Man’ in Kibaki’s PNU is a force to reckon with. Men will sit and watch, cower in her presence. They will continue to fear combats she is involved in if only she stands strong and determined to fearlessly face them.
touchspot Does it help to know number of sexual partners she/he had? Once you get in a serious relationship, there is always one question that itches to ask; how many sexual partners has she/he had? (unless they are virgins of course). They are probably also wondering the same about you. So why? What is the big deal? It is not as if they can unbed them, right? Well, the sad fact is that hardly anyone ever tells the truth about their sexual past. “No one has a right to know how many sexual partners I have had,” says a defiant Betty Kizito. “Not even my boyfriend. It is my personal life and it is private.” “The number of sexual partners one has had will open your eyes,” says Dan Mariga, a university student. “It will show you what kind of person they really are. If someone has had like 10 sexual partners and they are only 23 years-old, wouldn’t you be worried?” Elvis Nambuga, a lawyer, on the other hand, sees it as a positive if a woman has had a number of partners. “If she has had a couple, that means she has the sexual experience and will not be boring in bed. At least I am almost guaranteed that I will not be doing all the work.”

Countryman Don Williams knows about true friendship Friends can let you down at the worst possible moment, when you need them most; one true friend will rescue you. In his lyrics, Fairweather Friends, Don Williams likens life to the experience of sailing at sea or ocean, where the weather fluctuates from time to time. He says the many friends you have will disappoint you when you need them most in crossing to the other shore. They only consider you their friend in your good moments. But one genuine friend is worthier these many. During sailing, the winds may blow and drive the boat to the opposite direction which you may have not intended. A true friend will stretch his hand to hold you to safety. The waters may turn turbulent, making sailing torturous. He will uplift you from the tides. Williams likens the true
friend to a rock of safety, where you can rest till the seas calm down. No strong storm will strike and shake you in his presence; he will shield you and hold your hand, leading you out to safety. In your darkest moments
when challenges clog your eyes with fog, he will be your guide and light. His true love will keep you warm in the cold breezes of the sea too. Indeed, one true friend who loves you is worth the pain your heart endures.

Cheyech wins Kenya’s first gold medal
BIG AMBITIONS I want to be Man United skipper, declares Rooney P.15
Flomena Cheyech and Caroline Kilel saved Kenya the blushes as they easily took gold-silver sweep in the Commonwealth Games women’s marathon on Sunday. The pair withstood a drizzle in the Scottish city of Glasgow to win the medals moments after Australian Michael Shelley had sprinted away with the men’s title. Cheyech braced the slippery conditions and held on to the lead after speeding off from her compatriot as they approached the 35km mark. She crossed the finish line in 2:26.45 for her second major career victory after clinching the Paris marathon earlier in the year. Kilel closed in for second spot in 2:27.10 while Australian Jess Trengove wrapped up the podium place in a personal best of 2: 30.12. This was an impressive display on the course following through on Shelley’s surprise dominance that earned him gold in 2:11.15. “I have got to pinch myself. To come back and actually win is indescribable,” said the new marathon champion who won silver in New Delhi fours ago. John Kelai, the defending champion, faded to fifth as
Ugandan Abraham Kiplimo picked Uganda’s first medal, a bronze, in 2:12.23. The East Africans were clear favourites and dominated the lead pack by the 15km mark. Kilel and Chelany comfortably left their Ugandan counterparts to race upfront. The tenacious Australian pair of Shelley, the Commonwealth Games silver winner and Liam Adams, kept up pace. The 30-year old from Gold Coast brilliantly held on as he picked Australia’s fifth ever Commonwealth marathon title last won by compatriot Stephen Moneghetti 20 years ago. “You just try to run the best you possibly can and this race was like a dream to be honest. I am still buzzing. I can’t believe it,” said the Aussie who placed 16th at the London Olympics. Just the right thrill as his hometown readies to host the games in 2018. As Shelley’s champion status settled in, the Computer Science Masters graduate Chelany embraced the silver. “I am pleased with the silver win, a gold would have been a bonus considering these conditions which are not my best,” said the Seoul Marathon 2014 runner-up.”
held on: Flomena Cheyech held on to secure her second major victory after the Paris Marathon win earlier in the year.
Springboks outmuscle All Blacks to Rugby Sevens gold South Africa beat New Zealand 1712 in the final of the rugby sevens at Ibrox Stadium to end the All Blacks’ 30-match unbeaten run at the Commonwealth Games Sunday night. New Zealand, who had won gold at every game since the sport made its debut in 1998, ended Kenyan’s hopes of medal after beating them 19-7 in main cup quarter finals on Sunday. But the Springboks had too much pace and class for the defending
champions, outscoring them by three tries to two. Australia beat Samoa 24-0 to win the bronze medal, while Scotland, England and Wales all failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals. With the sport making its Olympic debut in Rio in 2016, Glasgow was always going to be about more than the action on the pitch. And with International Olympic Committee bigwigs and Rio’s organising officials no doubt paying close
attention, Sevens did not disappoint, packing out a 50,000 capacity stadium on both days and providing a carnival atmosphere. Kenya’s Paul Treu, a former Springboks coach, failed in the plate semi-finals losing 5-28 to Wales. “I must admit the boys did give their best which was not good enough at the end of the day,” said Treu. The coach lost 0-20 to his former side in the last match of the opening day at Ibrox Stadium.

Tusker Wazee share spoils with scribes in 10-goal thriller A gallant show by Kenya Sports Journalists was eventually neutralised by a last-minute strike in a 10-goal thriller against Tusker Wazee at Nairobi’s Ruaraka Sports Club. Even with experienced players like United States based Vincent Kwarula, Sammy Omollo, Zablon Amanaka, Francis Oduor and others who dotted Tusker’s jersy in the late 1990s, KSJ braved on for a 5-5 draw in a stormy friendly tie. The match was marred by poor officiating by one of brewers’ former players who awarded the home team two controversial penalties that almost brought the match to a temporary halt. The match also ended in tears after a KSJ player Timothy Olubulu (Mediamax) sustained a serious injury barely 20 minutes into the match that lasted more than two hours. Olubulu, popularly known as Kaka Tim, was elbowed on
the jaw by veteran Amanaka to end his participation in serious nosebleeding. Instead of punishing the aggressive player, the referee urged him to stay out for five minutes and return. X NEW’s Amos Abuga broke the duck when he scored the match opener for KSJ in the 16th minute after exchanging passes with Gregory Mulemi (Radio Africa) and Kevo Otieno to beat the veteran’s keeper at the far post. Steve Ayoo added two more goals to end the first half in 3-3 stalemate. Ralph, a Nigerian student at USIU, scored two goals for the brewers before Amanaka converted the third goal from the spot. Peter ‘Shata’ Muchiri, who replaced Abuga, headed brilliantly the fourth goal from Kevo Otieno’s cross after combining well with KSJ man of the match Mathew Tuta.

The race went just the way I hoped and as we had planned besides missing the sweep
Ndiku wins Kenya’s 200th Games medal Caleb Ndiku picked an unprecedented 12th Commonwealth Games 5000m title for Kenya with a stylish run on Sunday at the Hampden Park in Glasgow, taking the country’s total medal to 200 in the championship history. The Blonde haired Ndiku flawlessly dashed for the finish line which he crossed in 13:12.07 reclaiming the gold last won by Kenyan Augustine Choge as Isaiah Koech closed in for
the silver in 13:14.06. New Zealand’s Robertson Zane, Iten’s training at the High Altitude Training camp paid off as he botched Kenya’s sweep of medals sprinting home ahead of a tiring Joseph Kitur, the national trials winner who ran his season’s best of 13:17.49 in who came in fourth. “The race went just the way I hoped and as we had planned besides missing the sweep. I missed Farah(Mo)
in this race, he has been beating Kenyans without me, now am here,” said Ndiku the world indoor 3000m champion. Koech was the man who swept the track setting the early pace through the 3000m with Oceania runners Collis Birmingham, Zane and Jake Robertso sticking with the pack of the East Africans which also included Kitur and Ugandan Moses Kibet as Ndiku observed from the

Ndiku’s swift surge triggered a reaction amongst the pack as they tussled to move forward when Koech dropped further back. Ndiku eagerly took the cue sprinting ahead. ”I didn’t really like this weather but with about two laps remaining even that couldn’t stop me and I knew I would win it,” Ndiku said.
Kenya win second Grand Prix match The national women’s team eased past Algeria to win 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-13) at the Olympic Gymnasium Juan de la Berrera on the last day of action in Pool Q of the World Grand Prix in Mexico. The result means Kenya conclude a satisfying Pool Q intercontinental round with a 2-1 winloss record and seven points, while Algeria finish winless and with one point. Kenya were unlucky against Bulgaria to whom they narrowly lost 3-2 (25-20,23-25, 26-24, 24-26,15-12) in their second match. They had beaten host Mexico 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22) early Saturday in the opening match. “We›ve lost fighting,” David Lung’aho, Kenya’s head coach conceded defeat after match against Bulgaria. Bulgaria won the opening set (25-20) but Kenya responded by taking the subsequent set 25-23. The Europeans would then go ahead after claiming the third set 26-24 but Lung’aho girls responded positively, clinching the fourth set by identical set scores (26-24) to force the tie breaker which was closely contested too but the Bulgarian side eventually lifted the set 15-12 to take their win-loss ratio to 2-0 having beaten Algeria, another African side in their opening match last Saturday.
Chelsea, Spurs, Villa and Leicester win pre-season friendlies Cesc Fabregas set up fellow debutant Diego Costa to score as Chelsea beat Olimpija Ljubljana 2-1 in Slovenia. The Blues had trailed at halftime to a Darijan Matic strike in front of 16,000 inside the Stozice Stadium. But the Spain team-mates combined for Chelsea’s equaliser after 55 minutes, before Kurt Zouma prodded in a rebound eight minutes later. Boss Jose Mourinho said: “We feel we are going to be very strong and we want to fight for the title.” The match also featured an terrible miss from Fernando Torres, who chested a Nathan
Ake cross over the bar from two yards out, with the goal gaping. New signing Didier Drogba in his second spell at the club, did not feature, but watched on from the sidelines. Chicago Fire 0-2 Tottenham Goals from Harry Kane and Aaron Lennon gave Tottenham a 2-0 win over Chicago Fire in the United States. Mauricio Pochettino’s side extended their unbeaten pre-season start to three matches as Kane scored in the fifth minute. Lennon sealed the victory when he converted a Roberto Soldado through ball with six
minutes to go. Houston Dynamo 0-1 Aston Villa Joe Bennett’s first Aston Villa goal ensured they ended their tour of Texas with victory over Houston Dynamo. The left-back headed in Andreas Weimann’s cross four minutes before half-time. Arsenal to lose Khedira chase Arsenal look set to miss out on a potential deal for Sami Khedira as Real Madrid reportedly prepare to offer the midfielder up as part of a swap deal for Monaco’s James Rodriguez. The Gunners have been strongly tipped to scoop the Germany international and had been believed to have struck a Sh3.5billion fee with the Galacticos for the World Cup-winning playmaker. But Khedira’s agent last week claimed no such deal had been reached. Any further hope for the Gunners faithful had of seeing
the 27-year-old turn out at the Emirates Stadium this season all but ended following claims he will be headed to France. Madrid are known to be keen on luring Colombia star Rodriguez to the Bernabeu. The midfielder enjoyed stardom in the Brazil 2014 where he finished as the tournament’s top scorer after helping lead the side to the quarter-finals with six goals. But the forward has an Sh8.6billion buy-out clause in his contract with the Ligue 1 side, though Real Madrid are reportedly prepared to put forward a player-plus-cash offer.

Gor lead the log with 38 points, three clear of Tusker, who also drew 1-1 with hosts Bandari in Mombasa. On the bottom end of the table, 16th placed KCB pulled a surprise 4-0 humiliation of Mathare United at the City Stadium. Their compatriots in the relegation zone, Top Fry All Stars, squeezed a 1-1 draw against Muhoroni to stay above the bankers. Sofapaka closed up the gap on top

South Africa ended New Zealand’s run as the games champions which stretch as far back as 1998 in Malaysia when the shorter version of the game made the debut. it’s up to moyes: Striker Wayne Rooney says he would be delighted to wear the Man United armband.
I want to be Man United skipper, declares Rooney Wayne Rooney is keen to be named Manchester United’s new captain and is confident the team can challenge for the Premier League title this season. The departure of Nemanja Vidic to Inter Milan this summer has left United needing to appoint a new skipper and manager Louis van Gaal is taking his time before making a decision. Robin van Persie, who was van Gaal’s captain for the Netherlands, is a contender for the job, while long-serving midfielder Darren Fletcher wore the armband in the midweek win
over Los Angeles Galaxy. Rooney, who scored twice in the 7-0 romp, and another brace in the 3-2 win over AS Roma on Saturday, has captained United in the past and he is hoping to be given the role on a more permanent basis. “Of course I would like the captaincy but it’s the manager’s decision who he chooses,” said Rooney. “I think he wants to work with the players and then choose a captain from there. “We have to believe we can win the title,” the striker said.

CLASH OF GIANTS: Action from Sunday’s Kenya Premier League match between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards. The teams drew 2-2.
Man City smash 5 past Balotelli’s AC Milan in Pittsburgh Mario Balotelli (pictured) might have failed to light up AC Milan’s friendly with Manchester City, but as usual he was never too far from the spotlight. While his side went down 5-1 to his former club, the controversial Italian forward was accosted by two pitch invaders late in the game - and even let them snap a selfie with him. It wasn’t long before security were on the scene to pull the two frizzy-haired miscreants away, but Super Mario still obliged for a quick picture with a cheeky smile in Pittsburgh. At least the 23-year-old wasn’t among the most miserable performers for Milan. He came on as a half time substitute with the Rossoneri already 4-1 down courtesy of Stevan Jovetic,
Scott Sinclair, Jesus Navas and Kelechi Iheanacho, with Sulley Muntari scoring a consolation goal for Milan. Jovetic added a second goal after the break as he outshone Balotelli although he has had more pre season time after not appearing at the World Cup. But Balotelli’s former team mate Micah Richards was still happy to see him, posing for another selfie before the game - at least Richards was allowed on the pitch, despite his minimal game time with City.
Jerim howler grant Leopards a point
A moment of madness from captain Jerim Onyango granted AFC Leopards a deserved equaliser in a match they surrendered their early lead only to claw back late for 2-2 draw at the Nyayo stadium yesterday. Skipper Martin Imbalambala restored parity for Ingwe with a 30-yarder left strike that bounced over Onyango, embarrassing the custodian who had naively come out of his line. Gor’s Bobby Williamson wasparticularly baffled by Onyango’s mistake that denied them victory and could not take it lying low. “It

was a nice game although I’m disappointed with our keeper’s blunder that cost us the win, he could have handled the ball well but that’s how football is. The good thing is that we are still on top of the log. “It’s surprising teams celebrate when they draw with Gor instead of winning. That was seen in today’s match as Leopards fans celebrated after the final whistle,” Williamson said after the match. Leopards Pietier De Jongh blamed officials for poor officiating; claiming Gor’s second goal was off side. “Both the referee and lines-
