NCCK concerned over heightened political tension T he National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has raised concern over rising political tension in parts of the country. Addressing journalists at Jumuia Conference Centre in Limuru, the clergy said the tension pose a serious threat to peace before, during and after the forthcoming August 8, general election. “We are concerned that there has been heightened political tension in the country which is not good for our country especially at this time when we are facing the General Elections,” the clergy said in a statement read by Reverend Julius Wanyoike. Ruto reads mischief in government plan to import maize

Bomet Governor, Isaac Ruto has petitioned National Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich to shelve a government proposal to import maize from abroad saying it will be subjected to abuse and unnecessarily flood the market. Reading the budget speech in Parliament last week, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich proposed to allow duty free importation of white maize for four months. Kenyans are hoping that the approval to import maize will not be abused to the extent of affecting local producers at some point. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

From Page 1 Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission which they pointed out might compromise the outcome of the poll. “The preparedness of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) may result in the elections failing to meet the constitutional and legislative standards,” the clergy said. They however maintained that the August poll should not be postponed as the electoral commission through the chairman Wafula Chebukati has promised on many occasions that it will be free and fair. The clergy said they have put up interventions aimed at securing the elections, including provision of civic education, had been laid down. “We will help the electoral commission in putting up the necessary preparations including provision of civic education,” Wanyoike said. NCCK’s concerns come barely two weeks after the Second Multi Sectoral Forum (MSF II) under the theme Securing Elections 2017. an independent body, and are free from violence, intimidation, improper influence or corruption.” NCCK officials stated that despite

this provision and the nationwide acknowledgement that the 12th General Elections will be held in August 8, 2017, the journey towards the same has been challenged by hindrances arising from logistical, legal and political factors. This has called to question the readiness for the country to hold peaceful, free, fair and credible polls. This was a great concern for the Multi Sectoral Forum II. The Multi Sectoral Forum took time to consult with different stakeholders who have a role to play in the elections to establish their readiness for the same. From the discussions with them and subsequent appraisal of the prevailing conditions, the MSF identified a number of threats that if not handled well could derail the elections, including contested voter register, political party nominations, loss of confidence in elections related institutions, as well as pre and post election violence, among other concerns. The Multi Sectoral Forum noted that the prevailing state of insecurity and lack of cohesion across the country is the single strongest threat to peaceful, free, fair and credible elections. “So bad is the situation in the country that Kenyans generally expect violence and injustice from the security agencies rather than protection,” said the Forum. @sam_x254

Bomet Governor Ruto reads mischief in government plan to import duty free maize From Page 1 “Mr Speaker, ordinary bread and maize flour are VAT exempt, which means they do not benefit from deduction of input tax. Therefore, the input tax is built into their selling price,” Mr Rotich said. “In order to make these commodities affordable for the common mwananchi, I propose to zero-rate bread and maize flour to remove VAT altogether,” he added, warning that should traders fail to comply, the Government would withdraw the incentive. However, Governor Ruto said the national government move was just cosmetics and should do more to give farmers subsidized farm inputs to boost food production in the country instead of seeking to flood the market with imported maize. “Failing to put a ceiling on the tons of maize to be imported based on the needs of the country will open a window for unscrupulous businessmen to bring in cheap imports that would last several years,” Ruto said on Monday. “Importation of maize would only benefit politically correct business people and not the common man,” he added. Ruto questioned what happened to the Galana-Kulalu irrigation scheme in Tana River County where the national government has pumped more than Sh7

The Governor said the arrangement has apparently failed to achieve the desired results despite the billions of shillings pumped into it by the government and so much hype that went with it. The Bomet Governor, who has been in loggerheads with the Jubilee administration, said the 12 per cent budget allocation to the devolved units was far much lower than what was expected to be

He demanded that the allocation to counties be pegged at 45 per cent of the budget which he said Jubilee had failed to attain in the last five years. “CCM will support a coalition that pledges to devolve 45 per cent of the national budget to counties to spur economic growth and create employment opportunities for locals,” Ruto said @Hillary_x254

Labour Party leader Ababu Namwamba accuses NASA of using his party’s symbol WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5, 2017

Ababu Namwamba’s Labour Party of Kenya (LPK) has accused the opposition coalition the National Super Alliance (NASA) of unlawfully using his party’s symbol. Namwamba (Pictured) wants NASA blocked from using the emblem of the star further complicating matters for the opposition days after a non-governmental organisation, Northern Advocacy for Sustainable Agriculture, asked a court to stop Nasa from using the abbreviation. Addressing the media yesterday, Namwamba who is Budalang’i MP said his party formally lodged a complaint to the Registrar of Political Parties Ms Lucy Ndung’u against NASA. “We had reserved the use of a star as our party symbol, we really don’t know how NASA can purport to use our logo,” Namwamba said. Although the opposition has dismissed forgery claims by some of its critics, the opposition team might be staring at a crisis similar to what bedevilled the Orange Democratic Movement Kenya (ODMKenya) in the run up to the 2007 elections. Northern Advocacy for Sustainable Agriculture chairman, Mr Martin Nkari, said in a sworn affidavit that since the political alliance came into being, most donors have withdrawn support. Namaambwa’s accusations come less than two months after politician, David Makali was kicked out of the Labour Party of Kenya over alleged links with ODM’s Raila Odinga. Makali had been serving as the party’s secretary general and is eyeing the Bungoma senate seat currently held by Moses Wetang’ula. The party’s National Executive Council later appointed Organising Secretary, Peter ole Musei as Acting Secretary General. At the time, Youth Treasurer Ignatius Nyukuri said Makali had been pushing the Labour Party to join hands with NASA. @hillary_x254

Journalists association raise concern over increase attacks on scribes Chairman of the Kenya Correspondents’ Association Oloo Janak has expressed concern over increasing cases of violence involving journalists covering various functions in the country. Speaking during the launch of a strategic plan for the correspondents association, Janak said media stakeholders in the country will not relent until all journalists attacked in their line of duty get justice. The comments come just days after Bondobased journalist Isaiah Gwengi was harassed and roughed up by police while doing an investigative story. The Media Council of Kenya, the Kenya Union of Journalists, the Political Journalists’ Association of Kenya, the Association of Media Women in Kenya, CSOs and International agencies all condemned the assault. Charles Kerich, Media Council of Kenya chairman, said the case will be pursued until justice is served as such incidents have become common. “This is unacceptable. As we head to the election brutality will not be condoned...the duo reported early in the year that their lives were in danger,” Kerich said. In January, the same journalist recorded a statement at Bondo DCIO in which he said an officer attached to the Quick Response Team (QRT) had threatened him. Kaimenyi confirms having frosty relationship with NLC Lands Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi yesterday told parliamentary Committee on Lands that his office has a frosty relationship with the National Lands Commission. Kaimenyi told MPs that due to the independence of the Commission, the NLC “does things their own way” and some of their actions are not known to the ministry. “It has not been easy to deal with the NLC because of the so-called independence. They do things their own way,” Kaimenyi said. The Cabinet Secretary also confirmed to the committee that NLC Chairman Muhammed Swazuri sold Kenya Railways Corporation (KR) land to fraudsters and paid them Sh1 billion. Kaimenyi was hard pressed by MPs to explain why the ministry issued title deeds to the beneficiaries knowing that the land was fraudulently acquired, Kaimenyi said the relations between his office and the commission had been frosty hence he was unable to explain what was going on. Kaimenyi claimed that the NLC chairman knowingly and fraudulently, paid the money to the individuals for land belonging to KR. The Cabinet Secretary also told MPs that the documents used to pay the alleged land owners were forged. “We can confirm that the individuals forged the documents to acquire the land which was paid for by the commission,” Kaimenyi told the committee hearing a petition

NCPB to release 1 m bags of maize to curtail rising flour prices The government has ordered the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to immediately release one million bags of maize in an attempt to cut the cost of flour, which has hit an all-time high of Sh153 per 2kg packet. Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett said with the shortage of maize in the region, millers have been unable to import maize into the country owing to high prices, leading to the high cost of flour in the market. Bett explained that the move is geared towards reducing the price of flour to as low as Sh115 for a 2kg packet effective within the next seven days. He noted that the NCPB has a stock of 1.35 million 90kg bags, adding that maize imports are expected to reach the country in a month’s time to mitigate the biting famine. “The time at which the imported maize will hit this country is in excess of one month. We are instituting to release up to one million of our strategic reserves of NCPB,” said Bett. “The commitment we have had with the Cereal Millers Association is that by next week, the effect of the new prices will have to take place,” he added. To further cushion consumers, the CS said millers would access the bags for Sh3,000 from the current Sh4,000 per bag. Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry

Government to release Sh1.2bn Africa recording slower pace of electrification than required to promote miraa farming President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the Government to release Sh1.2 billion to implement recommendations to improve the profitability of miraa farming. The President issued the directive after a task force he formed to give recommendations on the miraa sector presented its report to him at State House, Nairobi. The Government had allocated another Sh1 billion for promoting the miraa sector in its budget that was presented last week. President Kenyatta said all priority recommendations by the task force should be implemented within the year. “The money that was allocated will now be released and it will be used in accordance with the recommendations of the task force,” said Kenyatta when he spoke after the report was presented to him. Key among the immediate recommendations of the Miraa Task Force is providing seed capital to farmers. This is aimed at redeeming leased miraa farms to break the cycle of poverty. The

Government will facilitate the setting up of SACCOs so that farmers can access credit in an organised manner. The government will also set up a scientific study at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in collaboration with the European Union (EU) with a view of developing a scientific basis for getting the restrictions lifted on the crop in parts of Europe. Another immediate recommendation is the registration of miraa farmers to facilitate target intervention and eliminate the possibility of fraud. The report also says a farmer-controlled agency styled along the lines of similar agencies for other crops should be formed. Establishment of a Miraa Research Institute (MRI) and support for research on the development of various new miraa products and utilisations is another of the immediate recommendations. @Dennis_x254

A number of countries, including Kenya, are recording slower than required overall progress in terms of achieving global energy access, renewable energy and energy efficiency goals, a new World Bank report has found. Titled Global Tracking Framework 2017 – Progress Toward Sustainable Energy, the report points to the International Energy Agency’s projections to show that at the current rate of progress, only 91 per cent of the world will have electricity access in 2030, while 72 per cent will have access to clean cooking. Improvements in energy intensity are also projected to fall short of the 2030 goal while the share of renewable sources of power will only reach 21 per cent by that time, underscoring the need for urgent action. The Bank has described energy as the cornerstone of economic growth. “Access to electricity in Africa is not growing as rapidly as its population. But countries like Kenya, Malawi, Sudan, Uganda, and Zambia and Rwanda, in particular, increased their electrification by 2 to 4 percentage points annually in the 2012-2014 period,” read the report in part.

“With access to modern, reliable and affordable energy, a child can study at night, small businesses can thrive, women can walk home under the safety of working streetlights and hospitals can function efficiently and save lives,” said the lender in a statement. “That is why reaching Sustainable Energy for All’s (SEforALL) objectives of universal access to modern energy, doubling the rate of improvement of energy efficiency and doubling the share of renewable energy by 2030 is crucial,” added the Bank. To make meaningful improvements, higher levels of financing and bolder policy commitments, along with the willingness on countries’ part to embrace new technologies on a much wider scale are essential, according to the report. In 2014, access to electricity globally climbed to 85.3 per cent, up only slightly from 85.0 per cent in 2012, representing a slowdown from previous years. This means that 1.06 billion people still live without access to electricity despite the fact that 86 million people are newly getting electricity every @enock_x254 year.

Ministry moves to boost power access with 310MW wind plant WEDNESDAY APRIL 5, 2017

Consumers are set to enjoy more reliable access to electricity as the government moves to inject more than 310 megawatts (MW) of wind power into the national grid by the end of the year. The energy will be sourced from a Turkana-based wind power plant will be set up at a cost of Sh72.3 billion and will supply electricity to the national grid at 8.5 US cents per unit. Making the revelations during the launch of the Africa Renewable Energy Leaders Summit in Nairobi, Energy Principal Secretary John Njoroge added that his Ministry was also keen to the completion of the ongoing construction of two solar power plants with a combined capacity of 80 megawatts. The two solar projects - dubbed Solienke and Cedata and based in Eldoret, each with an output of 40 megawatts - are expected to be completed at the end of the year. Details of the cost of setting up the solar plants have not been disclosed. However, Mr Njoroge said investors behind the projects are almost reaching a financial deal paving the way for their construction. “We have always preferred to use the least cost sources of electricity. There are two proposed solar plants of 40 megawatts each that are likely to start work by the end of the year,” explained Mr Njoroge. Once set up, the solar plants will inject the second batch of solar electricity into the national grid. In its plan to increase the installed capacity for power generation by 5,000 megawatts by the end of the year, the government has laid emphasis on development of

Children play near the wind turbines of the Ngong Power Station as the sun sets over Ngong Hills in Ngong, in the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, December 25, 2016. Energy distributor, Kenya Power said in November 2016 that the price of electricity will go down in coming months as the company shifts towards more cost-effective sources such as geothermal, solar and wind. One example of such source is the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project in northern Kenya, which is the single largest private investment in the country’s history. When completed in 2017, 365 turbines in Turkana are expected to provide 310 megawatts, or one fifth of Kenya’s generating capacity. EPA/DAI KUROKAWA renewable sources of power such as wind and solar and clean alternatives like geothermal energy to lower costs in a bid to attract investments. Wind and solar energy currently account for less than one per cent of the country’s electricity production mix. Geothermal power is the largest source accounting for 50 per cent of the total generation followed by hydro at 38 per cent, according to data from the ministry of energy and petroleum. Over 200 experts and government

representatives from Kenya, Ethiopia, Burundi, South Sudan, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda gathered in Nairobi on to discuss the present and future of green energy in East Africa. Under the patronage of Charles Keter, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum in Kenya, the first Africa Renewable Energy Leaders’ Summit (ARELS) promises to bring together governments, private sector, international development agencies, non-governmental organisations,

and think tanks to share insights on the latest projects, policies industry trends, and opportunities in the region. Local clothing sector receives renewed support from Ministry of Trade and Investment Kenya’s clothing sector has received renewed support from the country’s Trade Ministry following a sale at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre that saw more than 50,000 Nairobi residents queue to buy top international brands made in Kenya. The four-day sale was an initiative of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment in partnership with Textile and Apparel Firms under the Export Processing Zones programme. The super sale allowed Kenyans to buy original international fashion brands including Victoria Secrets, Tommy Hillfiger and Calvin Klein among others. Products were priced between Sh100 and Sh600 for items that cost Sh4,000 to Sh8,000 in international markets. Industrialization and Trade Cabinet Secretary said the sale was initiated to test whether there is an appetite for such products in a country that has for far too long been flooded with second-hand clothes.

The country exports products worth more than Sh40 million a year to the US under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) program, with the government saying it intends to exceed a billion dollars in the next two to three years. AGOA is a United States Trade Act, enacted on 18 May 2000 as Public Law 106 of the 200th Congress “We also want to sell Sh8 billion worth of textiles and fabrics into the domestic market per year,” Mohamed said. He was speaking in regard to the Buy Kenya, Build Kenya initiative. This will be possible following the agreement that has been effective for the last twelve months allowing Export Processing Zone (EPZ) companies that are exporting fabric to sell up to 20 percent of their produce into Kenya. The employment creation potential that the textile industry has is one of the reasons the Ministry has placed emphasis on the sector. The industry has also built experience and made the export market available to Kenya.

Mohamed noted that tax legislation has caused hurdles for countries planning to tap the export market. But the changes in legislature and policy are now favoring the domestic market. His sentiments come months after Colombia confirmed plans to help Kenya revitalize its textile and cotton industry. Following the success of the December 2016 Latin America, Caribbean and Africa Business Summit (LAC Africa) held in Nairobi, participating governments are seeking to partner to ensure social and economic growth for their citizens. LAC Africa delegates said the revival of the sector will help the country transmit authentic Kenyan culture through design and textiles internationally promoting a fusion of Kenyan and Afro Colombian cultures. Kenya will seek to establish Honorary Consulate services in the Caribbean while Jamaica will invest in Kenya to promote environmental preservation by reducing carbon emissions. @Dennis_x254

The airline attributes the exodus to higher remuneration packages offered to the pilots in the Middle East airlines. The carrier says it will offer its pilots the same offer to win back dozens of its employees who have quit the lossmaking carrier KQ has for the last one year, lost over 30 per cent of its pilots to rival airlines, outgoing Chief Executive, Mbuvi Ngunze said in a past statement. National carrier Kenya Airways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) to promote the sector and boost intra Africa traffic to one of the world most popular tourist destinations. The agreement encapsulates a framework for collaboration between the airline and the Seychelles Tourism Board. It is underpinned by the strategic value of tourism to both organisations, and to the airline’s purpose to promote sustainable development in Africa. The MoU covers promoting intra Africa tourism, joint marketing and participation in events across Africa, as well as stakeholder education. The MoU was signed at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure attended by Cabinet Secretaries, James Macharia and Najib Balala from the Kenya Government and the Seychelles Minister for Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine, Maurice Loustau-Lalanne. The MoU is also anchored on the aspiration to strengthen the airline presence in Seychelles as a destination and the STB desire to increase African tourism. “This partnership will also underscore the important role that Kenya Airways plays in the African economic development, specifically creating vital linkages between the continent and the international market, on which tourism and other key sectors depend on and thrive,” commented Kenya Airways

Distell said that the deal increases its exposure to Kenya’s highly attractive economy and alcoholic beverage industry. “With a population of over 47 million people, Kenya is expected to be one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, driven by rapid urbanisation and strong income per capita growth across major cities over the next decade. Spirits has been the fastest growing segment of Kenya’s alcoholic beverage industry and growth is anticipated to remain robust going forward,” said Donovan Hegland, Distell Africa, Managing Director in a statement issued on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. “Our strategy is to expand geographically through

acquisitions of and/or partnerships with regional scale players who have leading brands, rich heritage, and strong platforms in their core markets. We believe the strength of KWAL’s platform and key brands align with Distell’s strategic intent,” he added. Carlos Gomes, KWAL’s Managing Director welcomed the transaction saying KWAL and Distell management will continue to work together. “This will provide the platform for sustained growth and further cement KWAL’s position as Kenya’s national champion,” said Gomes Hegland said Distell seeks to grow the potential of the business, expand local skills and build on the brand platforms that are already established in Kenya by working closely with various local stakeholders. @Dennis_x254

The two organizations will work together to come up with tourism boosting strategies including incentive travels and holiday packages with KQ Holidays. This partnership is significant given that the current global environment is increasingly

competitive on both the tourism and aviation fronts “The MOU will see STB tap into advertising opportunities on the airline’s platforms while STB will market the Kenya Airways as the preferred airline partner to Seychelles,” said CS Macharia commenting on the MoU. Through its SkyTeam partnership, the airline offers access to 1,000 destinations across the globe and is looking to add USA in that repertoire as Kenya has now qualified for Category 1 which allows the airline to market and get traffic from the US. Through this deal, Kenya Airways will also explore the opportunity to have regular cargo freighter flights on the request of the Seychelles government based on demand for products from Kenya. KQ currently flies to 52 destinations worldwide, 42 of which are in Africa and carries over three million passengers annually. It continues to modernize its fleet with its 41 aircraft being some of the youngest in Africa. This includes its flagship B787 Dreamliner aircrafts. The on-board service is renowned and the lie-flat business class seat on the wide-body aircraft is consistently voted among the world’s top 10. Kenya Airways takes pride for being in the forefront of connecting Africa to the World and the World to Africa through its hub at the new ultra-modern Terminal 1A at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. @kevin_x254

LG scoops 20 accolades in Red Dot Awards LG Electronics (LG) has earned an impressive 20 total Red Dot Awards for excellence in design, including two Best of the Best awards. The top Best of the Best awards were given to LG’s Signature OLED TV W and Smart InstaView refrigerator for their innovation and contribution to the design community. Red Dot is widely seen as one of the world’s three most influential design committees, along with the iF Design Awards and IDEA (International Design Excellence Awards). The LG SIgnature OLED TV W features a Picture-on-Wall design that takes the TV concept and turns it into a piece of art. The super thin minimal profile of the 65-inch W7 – less than 4mm thick when mounted on the wall – creates the illusion of the TV levitating in mid-air. The LG Signature OLED TV W also recently received the 2017 iF Design Award, giving LG a diverse portfolio of award-winning products. LG’s InstaView Door-in-Door refrigerator was recognized by Red Dot for successfully combining a beautiful appliance with interactive technology. The refrigerator features a 29-inch LCD touch display which instantly turns transparent with just two knocks, letting customers peer inside without opening the door. The Smart Tag menu allows users to add stickers and tags

on the screen to indicate which foods are stored inside. Smart Tag also offers users the ability to input the expiration date of each item, so the refrigerator can issue reminders when foods near their expiration dates. In addition to these two Best of the Best awards, LG received 18 additional honours from the Red Dot judges. LG Signature OLED TV, Gram laptop, V20 smartphone, LG Watch Style and Sports, TONE series wireless headsets and Minibeam projector were among the other LG products recognized for their outstanding design and technological innovation. “Recognition such as these from an organization as respected as Red Dot is confirmation to us that LG is living up to our expectation as an industry leader in design,” said Noh Chang-ho, vice president and head of corporate design at LG Electronics. “We will continue to offer products that push the boundaries of design and technology, redefining consumers’ expectations and doing our best to set a higher standard for aesthetics.” LG Electronics, along with other LG companies such as LG Display and LG Hausys, will be participating in Milano Design Week from April 4 to April 9, 2017 to highlight the importance of design in consumers’ everyday lives. @kevin_x254

Government body to ban importation of uncertified vehicles from Australia WEDNESDAY APRIL 5, 2017

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has banned the importation of used cars from Australia as the government body moves to execute its mandate “It has come to our notice that most used Australian vehicles imported from Dubai do not have deregistration certificates from Government authorities in Australia,” KEBS said in a statement issures on April 4, 2017. “We have further established that some of these vehicles were actually exported to Dubai as accident cars, having been written–off in Australia only to be repaired and sold to unsuspecting buyers. We therefore wish to notify members of public that importation of used vehicles without original deregistration certificates from Australia shall not be allowed into the country,” the Bureau added. In order to ensure that used vehicles imported into the country are safe for use and that the importers are given value for money, KEBS has stated that all used vehicles shipped from Dubai are required to be inspected by KEBS Agents and issued with Certificates of Roadworthiness (CoR). The Bureau’s latest move comes at a time when the government is worving to revamp Kenya’s vehicle manufacturing sector. German carmaker, Volkswagen, for

instance began production at its Kenyan facility in Thika just outside Nairobi, in January. The move comes 40 years after it closed its original Kenyan plant. The new factory receives part assembled Polos and Vivos from Volkswagen South Africa’s (VWSA) Uitenhage assembly plant in the Eastern Cape for final assembly. It will handle 1,000 cars this year, increasing over time to 5,000 units. “We believe that Kenya has got the potential to develop a very big fullyfledged automotive industry. The East African Community has got the potential, and today is the first step in this direction that we want to take with our passenger cars,” said VWSA Managing Director, Thomas Schäfer said as he was announcing the launch in Nairobi. Other vehicle makers, such as Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi already have similar facilities in Kenya, mainly producing buses and trucks rather than cars. Total production stands at about 10,000 units a year, according to the Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers Association (KVMA). Africa heavily relies on imported used vehicles, with Japanese cars particularly popular in Anglophone Africa because they offer left-hand drive. Apart from South Africa and the North African

states, new car sales are very low in most of Africa. It has emerged that one of the biggest obstacles to greater new vehicle sales is the lack of access to finance and high interest rates even where loans are available. VW is banking on creating a market for its vehicles. VW followed the same strategy in Latin America, particularly in Mexico. The company wants to strengthen its position in emerging markets and forecasts that total vehicle sales in East Africa will increase by 40 per cent over

the next five years. It is considering setting up similar plants to the one in Kenya in Ethiopia and Tanzania.

Ethiopia already produces about 8,000 vehicles a year using imported kits in very small plants. Chinese firm Lifan has production capacity of 5,000 cars a year but assembles just 900. Car ownership in the country is very low, partly because of high taxes on imports, but in 2016 110,000 cars were imported, marking an increase of 50% on 2015. “VW global headquarters in Germany

wouldn’t look twice at the numbers we are talking about in African countries, but you have to take a long-term view. In Africa, you never go from A to B in a straight line,” Schäfer said: The Kenya Bureau of Standards is a statutory body established under the Standards Act (CAP 496) of the laws of Kenya mandated to provide, among other services, quality inspection of imports. @Dennis_x254

Man City visit leaders Chelsea tonight Chelsea and Manchester City renew acquaintances tonight at Stamford Bridge. After suffering a surprising defeat this past weekend against Crystal Palace, Antonio Conte’s side should be highlymotivated to return to their winning ways and thwart any idea that the title race is still in doubt. It’s always an exciting point in the season when two of the perceived top clubs in the league meet, especially when there are some title-race implications involved as well. While the Blues hold a seven point cushion atop the table, City are sitting in fourth. In the previous six league meetings between them, each side have won twice with a couple of draws mixed in. Chelsea have already gotten the better of City this season in the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium in December when second half goals from Diego Costa, Willian, and Eden Hazard cancelled out a Gary Cahill own goal. However, it’s been a mixed bag for both sides with respect to current form. City boss Pep Guardiola has says Antonio Conte “may be the best”, adding that he has “learned a lot” from teams managed by the Italian. Guardiola and Conte are both in their debut season in English football. The latter has fared better, with his Chelsea side leading the Premier League, 11 points ahead of fourth-placed City. “My opinion about my colleague Conte is that he’s superb,” said the Catalan. “He was able to make Italy play beautiful football - Juventus too - in a culture where it’s so defensive. “He’s an excellent manager, I learn a lot when I see his teams - Juventus, Italy and now. Zlatan Ibrahimovic rescued an injury-time draw for Manchester United against Everton as Jose Mourinho’s side once again failed to win in the league at Old Trafford. The Swede’s 94th-minute penalty was awarded after Luke Shaw’s goal-bound shot was handled on the line by visiting defender Ashley Williams, who was given a red card. The point means United extend their unbeaten run to 20 games, but have now drawn nine times at home in the league and 12 overall, while opponents Everton missed the chance to leapfrog them in the table. Everton’s opener came through Phil Jagielka’s clever, flicked finish from close range when he had his back to goal. In response to going behind, Ander Herrera struck the crossbar after Joel Robles parried Daley Blind’s free-kick and the United midfielder also forced Toffees goalkeeper Robles into a full-stretch save. Paul Pogba came on for the second half and headed against the bar from Ashley Young’s freekick, while Ibrahimovic had a goal disallowed for offside in a disjointed United performance. United were staring at defeat for the first time since their 4-0 drubbing against Chelsea in October before Ibrahimovic’s coolly taken penalty which sent Robles the wrong way. The striker said before kick-off that he and the club are “still in talks” about signing a new deal for next season and they are indebted to the Swede for his 27 goals this term, many of which have been on important occasions.

It was a huge let-off for the hosts, who had 61.5% possession and 18 shots, but only three on target, showing their obvious weakness in front of goal. Much of United’s play was in front of the Everton backline - often sideways and ponderous - without displaying any real strategy to breakdown the opposition. Previous boss Louis van Gaal’s slow style of play was criticised by the supporters, but United’s last two performances have been a throwback to those days. In fact, after 29 games in his first season, Van Gaal claimed 56 points and were fourth in the league, while Mourinho has two fewer points and are a place further back. In an attempt to get back into the contest, world record signing Pogba replaced left-back Daley Blind at half time. A reshuffle to the side meant Herrera dropped to Blind’s previous position, allowing Pogba to take up his role in the middle of the park. But less than five minutes later, Herrera swapped positions with Young to go to the right-back spot. All this took place with full-backs Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw - whose commitment has been questioned by the manager - sitting on the bench. Shaw did come on just after the hour mark but only after an injury to Young, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan - dropped as Mourinho was “not happy” with his performance in the previous match against West Brom - replaced Michael Carrick. The confusion from his players and the muddled changes from boss Mourinho showed the apparent mistrust he holds towards his squad as they struggle to find cohesion and incisiveness. A busy April for United has started with two draws, with five further league and two Europa League games to play.
