Traders’ Sh6.4b rally loss MONday, JULY 7, 2014

From Page 1

Thousands of Nairobi traders could lose up to Sh6.4 billion due to today’s Saba Saba rally. Many shops remained closed as business people feared break-out of violence as a result of the rally which has generated widespread tension since opposition leaders announced it a month ago. Economists have warned that the rally could have major financial implications after organisers declared it a public holiday. The World Bank says Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is worth Sh3.9 trillion a year. GDP is the market value of all officially recognised goods and services pro-

duced in a country. Nairobi contributes 60 per cent of the country’s GDP which is estimated to be worth Sh6.4 billion a day. This means every day Nairobi residents are away from work, millions of shillings in taxable income is lost. Nairobi county’s budget for 2013 to 2014 is about Sh26 billion, which will be used to fight traffic congestion, expansion of slums and informal settlements and water shortages. Other projects include garbage and drainage problems and shortage of health and educational facilities. The money lost today is equivalent to almost 1 per cent of the budget. Salaries absorb more than 40 per cent of the budget that amounts to

Sh10.4 billion. Today’s events have forced many shy away from the City Centre. For some motorists, it took 15 minutes to get to work instead of the usual one hour they spend on perennial crowded routes such as Ngong Road in Monday morning traffic snarl-ups. This was a sign that many may have played it safe and stayed at home. Mombasa Road, known for one of the most notorious traffic jams in the city, witnessed steady flow of traffic as some commuters stayed home to avoid possible riots that are anticipated to spill over from the rally. “I don’t know if it’s going to be safe,” said Winnie Mangeni, an employee

of Equity Bank, who chose to work from home. Like others who work near Uhuru Park, she was worried that tensions might run high as has happened in past events. Moi Avenue was almost a ghost town this morning with only a handful of citizens in the streets. Shops at Hilton Building next to Kenya Commercial Banks were closed as were a som businesses and stalls in the City Centre. Last week, UN Resident Coordinator Ms Nardos Bekele-Thomas warned that the country is at risk of not achieving its economic target due to political tension. “Kenya has a lot of potential and the economy will only grow when the country is peaceful and united,”

she said. “Rwanda and Ethiopia are doing well economically because of peace,” she said. Addressing a meeting with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) at the Inter-continental Hotel in Nairobi, diplomats warned that the rally is likely to create tension and anxiety among investors and Kenyans KEPSA Chairman Vimal Shah told the meeting politicians should act in a manner that “puts the interest of Kenyans and Kenya first.” He said the private sector was ready to engage the opposition the way they have been doing with Judiciary, Parliament and the Government to work out solutions to problems facing Kenyans.

Flamboyant dress code to counter youth sagging trousers Patrick Obahiagbon, Nigeria’s Chief of Staff to the Edo State Governor, on occasion wears his trousers in an unusual position-pulled way above the waist. Obahiagbon says his style came up as a social statement against the ‘sagging’ trend, which has in recent days become popular among the youth. “It was my own audacious statement to remonstrate against the pervasive tendency of Nigerians especially our youths that took to the practice of putting on trousers exposing their lower anatomical contours.” Aside from his fashion protest, the well-educated lawyer is popularly known for his flamboyant vocabulary, which he uses to impress, much like former Kenyan Anti-Corruption boss, PLO Lumumba. This is what he said in response to a question seeking to find out why he always uses tough English: “I am not really consensus ad idem with those who opine that my idiolect is advertently obfuscative. No no no, it’s just that I am in my elements when the colloquy has to do with the

pax nigeriana of our dreams and one necessarily needs to fulminate against the alcibiadian modus vivendi of our prebendal political class.”

But he admitted that he shakes off the flare when addressing his wife and children. “I relate with my family and friends very warmly and in an atmosphere

of camaraderie, stripped of my confutational habiliment and gladiatorial homilies. I am a very peaceful, calm, level-headed and celestially attuned soul personality.

Poor turnout at free fistula surgery camp The ongoing free medical camp for obstetric fistula at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has been hit by poor turnout. The two-week programme is a collaboration between the KNH, the Flying Doctors Society of Africa and Freedom from Fistula Foundation (FFF) and is aimed at benefitting some 100 women. KNH has dedicated a special team of doctors, nurses and its Specialized Reproductive Health clinic 66 for the camp. The Sh7 million camp ends on July 18. Similar medical camps will be held later this year in Embu and Kisii.

Fifty per cent of Kenya’s health workers are lazy Half of the health workers across the country do not report for duty because of either rampant absenteeism or because they are ghost employees, says a new national health services survey. Their negligence puts thousands of Kenyan patients at risk since lack of sufficient staff in health facilities wastes valuable time and can lead to poor service delivery. “I encourage counties to use this information for strategic planning, priority allocation of health resources and programming to make Kenya a healthy nation,” says Cabinet Secretary for Health, James Macharia. In

order to catch the absentees and the ghost workers,, the Ministry of Health will use the survey to assign every worker with a unique identifier for closer follow-ups. “Under a mandatory system, there must be enforceable sanctions for falsely reporting items such as payroll size and number of employees,” argues Macharia. Although the whole country recorded a shortage of workers, the most hit areas include Turkana, Bomet, Kajiado, Kisii and Murang’a in that order while the best staffed were Embu, Isiolo, Kiambu, Laikipia and Mombasa. Nairobi came in the middle.

At least 58 people were killed in clashes between Uganda’s security forces and armed militia from neighboring Congo in what seemed to be a coordinated attack on police posts and military barracks in three districts. Among the dead are 41 gunmen and 17 police and

civilians, with the number expected to rise. The police managed to arrest 17 of the assailants. Despite the fact the military says attacks were as a result of disputes between rival tribes, the residents fear that there could be a possible resurgence of a Ugandan rebel movement,

the Allied Democratic Forces, which is based in Eastern Congo and which carried out a violent insurgency in the area in the 1990s. “What we know is that this militia is not linked with ADF-NALU but we’re studying them to establish their motives

and their backers,” army spokesman Paddy Ankunda told Reuters News Agency. The police spokesman said the suspects under their custody were being questioned to know the motive for the attack and if there were more attacks scheduled to take place.

This comes at a time when the Ugandan security forces are on high alert after an alert was issued by the United States over an impending attack on the country’s major international airport and also on restaurants, shopping malls, among other social place.

Police blame MRC for Hindi raid Police have blamed the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) for the weekend attack at Hindi and Gamba in Lamu and Tana River counties, which left 22 people dead. Heavily armed men raided a trading centre in the village of Hindi, in Lamu County, and a police station in Gamba, Tana River County, on Saturday night killing people and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Deputy Inspector General of Police Grace Kaindi says preliminary findings of investigations show the attackers were followers of MRC despite Somali based Islamists Al-Shabaab having claimed responsibility for the attack. “For now, we believe the attackers were MRC and it revolves around local issues,” she said at a press conference Sunday. She said there had been intelligence about an attack in the area but it was no specific enough. Armed attackers said to be between 30 and 50 ambushed Hindi village killing 12 people and burnt down

several houses including a church. In Gamba, they killed a police sergeant on duty, before pulling out five people held in police cells and shooting them to death at close range. They also pulled out other

three civilians from a lorry, which had just arrived at the police station and killed them before disappearing into the bush. Witnesses said the attackers appeared in Hindi late on Saturday evening and opened

fire. “They went around shooting at people and villages indiscriminately,” area chief Abdallah Shahasi told journalists. Lamu County Commissioner Miiri Njenga said some government offices and property

had been burned down. All those killed were adult men apart from one teenage boy shot as he tried to flee. One woman in the town said the attackers had burned down her home but said they did not want to kill women.

A similar attack in Mpeketoni left more than 60 people killed and it is said the gunmen were on a mission to rescue one of their own said to have been detained at Gamba police station over the attacks.

Armed security officers comb city ahead of rally

Heavy police presence was evident in Nairobi today as security personnel moved to assure residents that all was well despite mounting tension over the Saba Saba rally. Road blocks were erected along major routes as Uhuru Park was placed under tight security ahead of the rally. Only a few motorists drove into town where most shops remained closed in anticipation of chaos orchestrated by opposition followers. Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue, however, said they had mapped out several hot spots and deployed enough personnel to ensure law and order. Central Business District, Kibera, Dandora, Mathare, Mukuru, Chokaa, Baba Dogo, Mwiki, Embakasi, Njiru, Kayole, Kawangware, Obama, Riruta, Uthiru and Kangemi estates have been placed under the watchful eye of security personnel. “Leaders promised that there will be no chaos but we have deployed enough security officers as a precaution,” Kibue said. He warned criminals planning to take advantage of the rally to loot or cause

mayhem that they will be mercilessly dealt with. Roadblocks were erected on major highways such as Mombasa Road as motorists were screened amid protests from politicians that the move was a sign of intimidation. “This is to ensure there is free flow of traffic in and out of Nairobi with emphasis on

major roads where we have deployed security to ensure that Kenyans go on with their operations,” said Kibue. At Uhuru Park, police officers were deployed to all entry points to screen those attending the rally. There were contingents of armed regular police, General Service Unit, Administration

Civil Service boss orders roll call for state workers A headcount was today conducted in a number of Government ministries and other public offices following orders issued to workers not to boycott duty because of the Saba Saba rally. Opposition leaders had declared today a public holiday to allow people attend their rally at Uhuru Park. The leaders plan to force the Government to tackle rising insecurity, ethnicity, corruption and the economy among other allegations. But Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua in a statement over the weekend warned that public servants who fail to turn up for work without permission will be sacked. He said roll calls will be conducted in all Government offices. And the directive was complied with in all public offices. “As is normal pro-

cedure, disciplinary action will be taken against any public servant who abscond duty,” he said. Mr Kinyua directed all public servants to adhere to the code of regulations that govern their terms and conditions of service. His directive was backed

by Public Service Trade Unions of Kenya (Pusetu) whose Secretary General Charles Mukhwaya asked workers to report to duty. “As far as we are concerned, Monday is not a gazetted public holiday and we expect our members to go to work,” he said.

Police officers as well as security agents in civilian clothes. Police Inspector General David Kimaiyo urged organisers to end the rally by 5 pm. Kimaiyo urged those who will attend to disperse peacefully after the meeting and warned of consequences for those who attempt to loot or cause violence during and after the

rally. “Any individual, whatever their status, who acts in a manner that threatens the rule of the law, will meet the full force of the law, our security is a shared obligation. I believe that since the Cord leaders have committed to a peaceful rally, they will uphold that in action and in spirit,” he said. He warned

that other gatherings in other parts of the country will not be tolerated. “Anybody who feels threatened as a result of certain activities of other people should report to the nearest police station, it is criminal to threaten others or direct any form of attack, verbal or otherwise to others,” he said.

63 women, girls escape Boko Haram captivity About 63 women and girls who were last month abducted by Boko Haram insurgents have escaped from the Islamists, Nigerian security sources said. They were among 68 abducted last month near the town of Damboa in the north-eastern Borno state. Reports say the women escaped when the militants went to attack a military base near Damboa on Friday. The Nigerian military said it killed more than 50 rebels in a clash that

night. Boko Haram is still holding more than 200 schoolgirls abducted in April. Local vigilante Abbas Gava told journalists he had “received an alert from my colleagues... that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home”. “They took the bold step when their abductors moved out to carry out an operation,” he said. A high-level security source in the

state capital, Maiduguri confirmed the escape. Boko Haram triggered an international outcry when it captured more than 200 girls in Borno’s Chibok town on 14 April. It is demanding the release of its fighters and their relatives in exchange for the girls but the government has rejected that proposal. Last week three women were arrested for recruiting female members for the militant group, the country’s military

said. They were said to have targeted widows and young girls, promising them marriage to Boko Haram members. A state of emergency is in force in northern Nigeria because of the group’s increasingly violent campaign to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state. Maiduguri was the headquarters of Boko Haram until it was forced out by the military and vigilante groups.

Study says donating blood cuts risk of heart attack Donating blood could highly reduce the risk of heart disease, researchers say. Austrian scientists found that fresh and young red blood cells can counter the severe effects caused by instances like jetlag, which are responsible for the high incidence of heart diseases especially among shift workers. The scientists, led by Dr Margit Egg of the University of Innsbruck, worked on zebrafish (Danio rerio), a model organism which, like humans, is active during the day. The fish were subjected to alternate short (7 hour) and long (21 hour) days, resembling shift patterns common in industry. It was found that “jetlagged” animals showed higher numbers of aged red blood cells, which accumulated in the blood vessels. “Normally there is a balance between newly produced red blood cells and old ones which are removed from the blood,” Dr Egg said. Old cells are less flexible and become stuck in the spleen and liver, where they are engulfed by white blood cells. Jetlag appears to disrupt this removal process, but the researchers are currently unsure why this is the case, and they are investigating if jetlag affects any other physiological processes. Large aggregates of old red blood cells in the vessels are risky because this increases the chance of a clot that could lead to a heart attack. This may explain why shift workers have a 30 per cent higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

taming the dragon: Researchers at Kit Mikayi Primary School during a past World Malaria Day. A drug by phamaceutical firm Norvatis Pharma has has demonstrated a 95 per cent success rate in the management of the disease.

Norvatis drug hope for Malaria patients As millions of Kenyans risk death by taking fake drugs, a global pharmaceutical company has developed a treatment for malaria that is guaranteed to work. Norvatis Pharma has developed an anti-malaria drug that has demonstrated a 95 per cent success rate among patients. Popularly known as Coartem, the drug has been tested since 2004, with 75 million treatments. The company has launched a new version of the drug under the same name. In 2002, the World Health Organisation recommended that countries experi-

encing resistance to current therapy change to a known combination therapy, where multiple treatments are given to patients. “Patients only need to take a tablet per dose compared with the previous four,” says Novartis Pharma Services Manager for Africa Operations, Nathan Mulure. Speaking in Nairobi on July 4, he said the new drug, which has been introduced in Kenya, has also been launched in Nigeria and Angola. It will soon be launched in Uganda and Ghana. Malaria costs Kenyans between Sh1,000 and Sh25,300 per treatment depending

on the severity of the disease. A report by the Malaria Control and Elimination Partnership in Africa (MACEPA) says Tanzanian patients pay between Sh460 and Sh12,100, half of what Kenyans are charged. The disease is the number one killer in Kenya with 23,000 deaths reported in 2013. Pneumonia came second after killing 22,000, while Cancer, HIV and TB follow in that order. Norvatis Pharma also launched a formulation of tablet in 2009 after completing clinical trials and subsequent registration in Europe and Africa.

A 10-month investigation by Chinese authorities accused the pharmaceutical firm of massive and systemic corruption that created billions of Yuan in revenue. The scandal started in 2012 when China’s State Administration for Industry and Commerce received anonymous emails alleging corruption in the firm. Some doctors are said to have been sent on all expenses-paid holidays they falsely claimed were conferences. Payments were funnelled as fictional expenses through a travel agent. The firm says it has investigated the claims using external legal and audit advice. “Some fraudulent behaviour relating to expense claims was identified, resulting in

One in every two Kenyans prefers items of lower price

One in every two Kenyan adults will buy a kilo of meat that is about to expire instead of paying an extra Sh30 for a fresh cut. The figure adds up to about 6 million Kenyan shoppers out of about 11.5 million, numbers from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics show. A consumer survey by research firm McKinsey Africa reveals that 53 per cent of Kenyans pick grocers based on price rather than quality. Damian Hattingh, who led the study, says almost half the shoppers go to a shop or supermarket because it has a promotion or sells items for less than rivals. Hattingh and colleagues from Mckinsey says only 1 million Kenyans (9 per cent of adult hoppers) will choose a highest quality brand of an item from a supermarket. About 2.4 million shoppers frequently choose the best quality while 3.4 million do not bother. The researchers claim that this is proof that Kenyans are always looking for a bargain.

dismissals and changes to our monitoring procedures in China,” a spokesman said. Four senior GSK executives have been detained by Chinese police along with the former head of GSK China, Mark Reilly. They will stand

trial later this year for illegally buying and selling private information. Beijing has also issued warnings to all foreign firms that the corruption charges against GSK executives could damage operations in the

country. Earlier this month, GSK’s former head of operations was accused of ordering employees to commit bribery on a widespread scale by the Chinese authorities.

In fashion, Willam Russo, who also worked on the research, says “58 per cent of shoppers want to wear the latest trends but few are willing to pay for original items.” Only one in 10 Kenyan shoppers will buy original branded attire. This is especially evident for imported jeans which cost Sh6,000 a pair, while cheaper knock-offs cost about Sh1,500. Informal retailers, popularly known as mitumba dealers, have become a lifeline for those who want trendy clothes at affordable price. Because they allow customers to bargain for items, they have ensured success. For Sh200, a young man can get a fitting cotton shirt that would cost Sh2,000 at Woolworths, an international retail chain with a presence in Kenya.

Nigeria firm to cut price of cement in Kenya

HEALTHY SOIL: Bacteria in the soil is responsible for the increasing wilt diseases among greenhouse farmers in Kenya.

Farmer steams soil to kill harmful bacteria A local agronomist has discovered a cheap way of killing over 90 per cent of bacteria and other disease causing-organisms that have been destroying the crops in his area – soil steaming. Christopher Mutuni, a farmer and an agent for Amiran, an agriculture-based company with operations all across East Africa, is saving the

crops of farmers across the country. “We realized after a survey of our farmers that one of the major challenges they were grappling with is bacterial wilt which is as a result of micro-organisms in the soils,” Mutuni explains. Bacteria in the soil is responsible for the increasing wilt diseases among greenhouse farmers in Kenya, costing

jobcorner Kenyans are missing out on jobs in the country’s fledgling mining industry due to lack of relevant training and experience. “There is a limited number of locals with the experience required for senior operational roles, which is not surprising, given that Base is the first major mining operation here,” Simon Wall, the External Affairs Manager for Base Titanium an Australian mining company with operations in Kenya, says. “There just isn’t the depth of experience available in the Kenyan labour market to match requirement at this stage.” The London-based Tullow Oil

Company is experiencing similar challenges in finding trained and experienced mining experts. The companies say the few professions trained in mining and related engineering fields lack hands-on experience forcing them to look for experts elsewhere. Base Titanium, for instance, looking for people with 15 to 20 years of mining experience, hired 52 of its new employees from outside the country. . “Modern mining is more capital than labour intensive so it is unlikely that it will absorb many directly,” said Cliff Otega, Managing Director at Standard and Mutual.

them major losses since it kills most of their crops. James Nyoro, an expert from the Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy And Development says local farmers can make between Sh30, 000 and Sh60, 000 from an acre of maize. The bacteria has the potential to destroy more than half of their yield. To curb the threat, Mutuni

developed a sort of kiln that consists of a metallic drum with a pipe system. The kiln can accommodate about two wheelbarrows of soil although the size may vary depending on the needs of a farmer. The kiln is filled with soil covering the pipes. It is then covered tightly with a sort of rig and heated, creating steam, which kills the

harmful bacteria in the soil. According to a study done by the Kenya Agriculture Research Institute (KARI), the most affected soils by the disease causing micro-organisms are in the Nyanza and Western regions of the country. Mutuni’s technology has already been adopted to farmers in Kisumu, Kiambu and Machakos.

Kenya to buy maize from TZ

Kenya has signed a deal to buy 2.4 million bags of maize from Tanzania to lower maize and flour prices. The importation will cease after the harvest season in mid-August to cushion local farmers from low prices. A bag of maize costs Sh3, 200 in Kenya. The government will avail the maize from Tanzania at Sh2, 950, which Africa Alliance’s researcher Vuyiswa Nzimande says will lower local flour prices in the coming weeks.

The price of cement is likely to fall with the expected entry of Nigeria’s Dangote Cement into the market. Dangote said it will double the capacity for its upcoming cement factory in Kenya. Vuyiswa Nzimande, of investment group, Africa Alliance, says the move points to “a looming shake up of the market that could see a drop or further stagnation of prices.” Dangote says it revised it’s annual production capacity to three metric tonnes per year.

Looking to buy a smartphone? You need to know something about operating systems XNews tested three phones running on different operating systems and this is what we discovered. Android devices. Android is user friendly and it is easy to navigate through pages. There are also applications of all kinds on the android play store. The greatest feature of android that’s not on any other smartphone software is the ability to change the user interface by simply downloading one from the play store. However, the main problem with most android devices is its vulnerable to viruses from its own play store applications. Another problem with android is that most ‘free’ applications on the store come with generally annoying advertisements. A frequent android user Kristina Thuo also complained of common lag on Android.

‘’ I love my phone and everything about it except the fact that it has a lot of lag after it restarts.’’ Windows phone From the short experience we had with windows, one thing prominently stood out- the classy user interface. The camera comes with its own photo editing mode which is great and offers a lot of editing options. Phones operating on windows are generally faster than their Android counterparts. However, this operating system is not as user friendly as Android. Gloria, who had been using android then moved to windows said: “When I was on android, navigation was way easier than it is on my Nokia Lumia (which uses Windows).” Another challenge with windows is that most application found on Apple and Android are not offered

in the windows store. Apple XNews’ gadget wiz, Imani Wamai, has been using Apple for about a month now and he loves its simplicity and “the way it works in synchronisation with other apple devices.” Apple devices also have high security. The store does not allow you to download anything until you approve by entering your apple ID password. “The other thing I love about apple is its animation quality,” said Imani. Until today, no other operating systems come close to Apple in the presentation of its animations. However, apple can be limiting in terms of personalization. For instance, you cannot install your own ringtone, unless you buy it from the store, which has a limited selection to choose from.

The irresistible bad boy

MONDAY, julY 7, 2014

Bad Boys have a reputation; they are good looking (most of them at least), arrogant, inconsiderate, inattentive and insensitive, yet women flock for them. Are these the qualities women find attractive in men? A study led by psychiatrist Gregory Louis Carter of the University of Durham reveals that the traits of narcissism and cynicism may led to short-term mating in men. This is because it involves a willingness to compete with rivals for women and to repel them shortly after sexual intercourse. It is all about the alpha male- the one who is most likely to hunt for prey and aggressively fend off threats. The problem is that they tend to hunt for more than one prey. With all the negatives about bad boys, what is the motivation for women to have a desire for a bad boy in their life? Dr Chris Hart, a psychologist and relationship expert, says it is the excitement and the

WOMAN POWER: The challenge and possibility of converting a playboy into a loving, supportive and sensitive man is a strong pull for women.

For some women, the appeal of the bad boy is often too hard to resist fact that he is interesting which makes him quite appealing. “If you go out with a bad boy, you are guaranteed to have quite a fun night unlike going out with the nice ones,” he says. The challenge and the possibility of converting a

bad boy from a playboy into a loving, supportive and sensitive man is a strong pull for women. This is combined with the fact of never knowing what is going to happen next is what keeps women with them. The thrill of

doing something that is against the norm is also a motivating. This is because he is not the type of man that her friends or parents will normally approve of combined with the fact that many women may want him but he choose you.

Despite this, Dr Hart warns that a bad boy is not the type of guy a woman is going to tie down to. “Forget about marriage; with him, he loves his freedom and there is a zero percent chance of it happening.”

Morning after pills

Every Monday morning, chemists in Nairobi register brisk sales of morning after pills. After a weekend of fun and unprotected sex, morning after pills are the go-to option of preventing unwanted pregnancies. The morning after pill or e-pill as it is commonly known, is not a regular

contraception method which is used as a backup when a condom breaks, missing of regular birth control pills and cases of rape. The pill should be taken within three days after unprotected sex for maximum effect. With every day that passes, the effect decreases. It works

by preventing the release of eggs; that is if this has not happened already. And if the process has taken place, it will interfere with sperm transport, fertilisation and attachment of the fertilised egg onto the womb. Due to the drug’s high hormonal content, only one dose within one menstrual cycle

is recommended. One e-pill has power of almost 50 regular birth control pills which some experts say cause blood clots. The e-pill became popular in Kenya as part of a government move to curb unwanted pregnancies and promote use of contraception in family planning.

Ruth Matete

My dream now close to reality To many, Ruth Matete is a young, elegant and bold singer who won Tusker Project Fame 5. She is the woman with personal drive that no one can stop. Her sweet voice may be known beyond borders, but as best stories would have it, Ruth is a girl with a past not even strong men would want to have. As a young girl, Ruth grew up knowing nothing about big city life as she stayed with an ailing

mother in Kakamega. “My parents separated after they had me. I first stayed with my mother in Kakamega and moved to Nairobi when I was eight-yearsold,” Ruth once said in an interview. “My mum became sickly and so she sent me to Nairobi to stay with my dad.” Sadly, her mum later passed on, living her with the dad to take care of her. She went to Dr Krapf and Uhuru primary

schools before proceeding to Maasai Girls and St Paul’s Erusui for high school education. She later joined Daystar University as an unknown commodity where she realised her strength, voice and never looked back. She went for TPF5 auditions and won. Her life has never been the same. When she won the contest, she became an instant celebrity. “People recognise me everywhere

I go and many doors are opening. I thought my dream of being an artiste was very far, but is now within reach,” said Ruth. From a daughter raised by a single parent, to a school girl without a mother, Ruth is a modest force to reckon with. She is a source of inspiration to others irrespective of status: your childhood can come true, but only if you dare to cling on to them.

Neymar Message to Brazil

optmistic: injured brazilian stiker neymar said he is confident his team mates will win the World cup for him and the country.

Brazil’s Neymar is out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup but he still has his winning spirit. The 22-year-old Brazil star went down with a broken vertebra toward the end of his team’s 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Colombia on Friday. Neymar released a video via

the Brazilian Soccer Federation on Saturday, and though his eyes were full of tears, he still had a positive message for his fan and his teammates. “My dream isn’t over. It was interrupted by a player but it continues,” Neymar said. “I’m certain that my

teammates will do everything possible so that my dream, which is to be a champion, comes true. My dream was also to play in a World Cup final, but this time it didn’t work out. I am sure they will win this cup and be champions, and I will be with them, and all Brazilians will soon be

celebrating all of that.” “It’s a very difficult moment, I have no words to translate what is going through my head and my heart, I’d just like to say I will be back as quickly as possible, when you least expect it, I’ll be back.” The legend of Neymar has been fuel-

Krul was part of the plan, Van Gaal Netherlands coach Louis Van Gaal revealed that it was pre-arranged that Tim Krul would be the better choice if they were to head to penalties. Van Gaal was full of praise of his Dutch side’s efforts after they advanced to their second successive World Cup semi-final, despite not scoring in the match and winning narrowly on penalties. The Manchester United Manager has also hailed his cuurent side as ‘the best group’ he’s worked with in terms of cohesion and attitude shown on and off the pitch. “In terms of team spirit and togetherness, this is the best group I’ve worked with,” he said.

“I thought we had more quality than Costa Rica and deserved to win. I don’t know how much ball possession we had, how many times we hit the woodwork and how many

chances we had – in the end it’s all about scoring.” Van Gaal revealed that they did practice penalties in training and that the plan was always to bring goalkeeper

Tim Krul on if the match was to head to sudden-death, as the Newcastle United shot-stopper has a more physically imposing presence in goal than Jasper Cillessen.

ing Brazil for years before this World Cup, and although the star and his nation are essentially in mourning over his injury, the young forward’s words ring true, he will be back. The striker was kneed in the back by Colombian defender Zuniga minutes to the end of the match.

Blow for Argentina as Di Maria is ruled out of WC Argentina winger Angel Di Maria has been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup with a tear in his right thigh. The 26-year-old, who scored the only goal in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Switzerland in the round of 16, was forced off the field in his side’s 1-0 quarterfinal win over Belgium in the just the 33rd minute after feeling pain in his leg. Though not quite at the level of Brazil losing Neymar for their semi-final against Germany, the loss of Di Maria is still a significant blow for Argentina, who have reached the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990. Before the extent of the in-

jury was known, Argentina manager Alejandro Sabella said, “I hope that it won’t be too bad in the case of Angel because Angel is vital to us.” “He’s a key player in this project,” striker Gonzalo Higuain, who scored against Belgium, added. “I’m really sorry. But we hope that he will be ready as soon as possible because we know what he does for the team.” With Di Maria in the line-up, Argentina weren’t solely reliant on Lionel Messi, but without him — and Sergio Aguero also struggling with a hamstring problem — there will be even more pressure on Messi to carry the team to World Cup glory .

BOBBY TIME? Gor Mahia coach Bobby Williamson blamed the referee for not giving enought added time in the KPL clash with Thika United. The game ended 1-1.

Lakers prevail in Copa Coca Cola Nyanza finals Kisumu Lakers will be playing in the Copa Coca-Cola nationals finals for the second straight year after winning the Nyanza provincial finals at Gusii Stadium over the weekend. Lakers, who finished runners-up to JMJ Academy last year, survived tough competition in the Nyanza playoffs but their experience paid off as they beat Aspired Youth 3-0 successfully defending the region’s title despite being a man down. They cruised past Gucha Star Boys 2-0 in their knockout match with goals from Collins Omondi and Basil Ochieng. The win set them up for a clash against Bondo United. The two teams had already met at the group stages. The teams could not be separated in the regular 90 minutes, thanks mostly to the heroics of Joseph Bwire

between the posts for Lakers. After the barren draw, the teams faced off on penalties where Bwire was again the hero, saving two penalties to help Lakers overcome Bondo 2-1. Aspire Youth claimed a 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory over Rachuonyo Boys in the other semi-final, setting up the final which was played under rainy conditions to decide who will represent Nyanza in this year’s national finals slated for mid-August in Nairobi. It was Lakers who took the lead after exerting persistent pressure on Aspire’s back four, Erick Ochieng at the end of a well-worked team move. Lakers started the second half badly with Ochieng sent off after a second bookable offence. It was the defending champions who doubled their lead, Frankline Otieno’s sublime freekick skidding to the back of the net.

Gor Mahia head coach Bobby Williamson was left lamenting on the amount of added time given as his side was held to 1-1 draw by Thika United on Sunday a result that saw Tusker FC dislodge them from the top of the table standings. Tusker, with a superior goal difference, moved to 31 points after 1-0 win over Western Stima same as the reigning champions Gor. “I’m very disappointed with the referee because he only added three minutes despite the game having several stoppages and that’s why you see the fans are frustrated. Adding three minutes was an absolute joke,” said the Scott. “Despite that I am happy how my players conducted themselves. I could have loved to take all the points just as any coach could, but

we got to be contended with the single we got.” Danny Sserunkuma scored his seventh goal of the season to salvage a point for the champions after Thika United’s Jackson Macharia had opened the scoring at the stroke of the half hour mark. Bad news for Gor is that Sunday match could be the last Sserunkuma has played for the team. He has been a long time target of South African Premier Soccer League (SPL) giants Kaizer Chiefs t, and he has also done trials at FC Koge in Denmark’s First Division. If he leaves, he will be the fourth high profile player to do so in such a short period of time, after midfielder kingpin, Teddy Akumu, Kevin Omondi and Rama Salim.

Iniesta hints at United move Barcelona Star, Andres Iniesta says incoming Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is a ‘special’ coach, hinting at the possibility that he could follow him to Old Trafford. The Spain international emerged through the ranks in the Barcelona B team when van Gaal took charge between 1997 and 2000, and only made his debut two years after the Dutch coach left in 2002. However, the 30-year-old says he had a special effect on his career, adding that van Gaal made an extra effort to take the reserves and younger players under his wing. When asked by Barca TV if van Gaal was an imposing figure, he replied: “Yes. He already commands respect when you are a veteran, so imagine when you have just entered the team and you are young. “But the truth is I have a special memory of him, because he is someone very important to me and if there was something he cared about was supporting the young players from the reserves.” Iniesta is one of many Barcelona stars - along with Dani Alves and Xavi -who are said to be considering their options at the Camp Nou as the club goes through a transitional phase under new coach, Luis Enrique. His praise of van Gaal appears to be nothing more than complimentary, but with Manchester United undergoing a restructuring of their own, they could be tempted to move for Iniesta if the Spaniard chooses to leave his boyhood club.
