Public varsity regulator warns over fake degrees Students graduating with degrees from colleges that offer programmes in collaboration with public universities risk having the papers not recognised, the Commission for University Education (CUE) has warned. CUE Chief Executive David Some told X News that many colleges are
luring students with promises of offering degrees in conjunction with local and international universities. “A college offers what it applied for before accreditation. It cannot offer a degree if it is registered to offer a diploma or certificate, said Prof Some.

Regulator’s degrees warning TUESday, JULY 8, 2014
From Page 1 The warning comes in the backdrop of a letter from Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi addressed to the commission seeking explanation on how bogus colleges started offering academic programmes without accreditation. Kaimenyi’s move is seen as an attempt to protect learners from fake institutions that may confer them with bogus papers. Prof Some said the Universities Standards Guidelines, 2014, only recognise international associations between universities. He said his commission does not recognise local university-college collaborations. “The commission only allows
collaboration between local and foreign universities. Even the foreign institutions must also meet internationally set standards,” he said. Before a university is chartered to offer degrees, it must meet conditions set by CUE, he said. The charter does not mean they cannot share what they think is critical. “If for any reason there is need for students to use specialised facilities in a lower institution, it will be a private arrangement between the university senate and the college,” he said. Some said the only learning allowed outside mother universities is that of its campuses. He warned that with globalisation, other international institutions can
take advantage of ignorance among local students. “We welcome online studies and all its forms to ease access to education. But we cannot recognise degrees from international institutions that do not offer the required number of hours, course content, pass marks, among other requirements,” he said. He said the commission publishes in local dailies and on its website universities approved to offer degrees after every three months. He said the international universities whose degrees can be recognised in Kenya are on the commission’s website. “CUE cannot police local and international institutions. It is the
obligation of prospective student to check what we have published on both our website and the newspapers for confirmation,” he said. He refuted the findings of a recent survey by the Inter-University Council for East Africa claiming that more than half of graduates from the region lack skills necessary for the job market. “Programmes offered in member states (East Africa) are up to standard. The content is checked against international set standards. Otherwise our students could not be leading when they go for masters’ and PhDs in Oxford and other reputable universities,” he said. Online adverts for universities that claim to offer accredited online
undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral degrees has become common. Before enrolling, students have often been advised to check the institutions on the International Network of Quality Assurance Agencies for Higher Education and African Quality Assurance Network. CUE replaced the Commission for Higher Education after the enactment of the Universities Act, 2012. It is responsible for operationalising and regulating university education in Kenya. It also ensures those seeking to open public or private universities have the critical resources necessary for the purpose, including physical, human and financial resources.

Everyone will have access to the Internet in 2025 Everyone in the world will have access to the internet within the next decade. The Pew Research Centre has quizzed more than 1,400 experts and has come to the conclusion that internet access will be realised in 2025. The Centre is an American think tank based in Washington and provides information on social issues, public opinion, and demographic trends shaping the world. While experts believe that the web will be more open then, allowing people to freely share information, they warn that governments will seek to control as much of it as they can. “Governments worldwide are looking for more power
over the net, especially within their own countries,” says Dave Burstein, Editor of Fast Net News, a network committed to digital technology and its role in society. “Britain, for example, has found a way to block sites the government considers ‘terrorist’ or otherwise dangerous. This will grow.” On the other hand, Kenya plans to boost its internet penetration rate from 42-70 per cent within the next three or so years. As part of a plan outlined by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), the country will see internet access reaching as many as 28 million Kenyans by 2018.

Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue said the men were planning to steal the car from the area and escape with it. “The officers were on alert and managed to get them and recovered a revolver pistol, a toy pistol and knives from the men. We believe they are part of a gang that has been disturbing the area at large,” said Kibue. Police said locals had been complaining of repeated attacks by gunmen in which they lose valuables and cash. The Tuesday killings brought to almost 20 the number of suspects killed in Nairobi in a week. Six had been killed during the weekend in separate incidents. Three of them were found dead after allegedly consuming alcohol in Kayole area. Police said they are yet to establish what killed the three on Saturday.
Last Thursday, five other suspected thugs were shot dead in two separate incidents and two pistols recovered from them after they had shot and injured a businessman in Nairobi whom they robbed of Sh200,000 he was carrying from a supermarket at the Syokimau Railway Station. One of the pistols found on the four was later confirmed to belong to police and it is not clear how the criminals got it. “We have an anti-mugging team that is out there looking for the thugs destabilising residents. We have made several arrests so far,” said Kibue. In other cases, an irate crowd lynched two motorcycle riders who had attacked and robbed a woman in Kileleshwa on Saturday night. State to spend Sh1.7b on mobile grain dryers The government will spend Sh1.7 billion this financial year to buy mobile grain driers and build better stores to prevent food loss to aflatoxin. Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei says Sh248 million will be used to buy 36 mobile driers. The machines will be stationed in 36 sub-counties that have been heavily affected by poor storage and high moisture content that leads to rotting of grains. Koskei said the construction of 13 out of 36 stores has already commenced. This will be one of the effort of addressing the perennial food shortage beside construction of multi-billion Galana/Kulalu irrigation scheme that will bring 1 million hectares under farming. Koskei told an intergovernmental meeting on Agriculture in Mombasa recently that between 30 and 40 per cent of food goes to waste every season due to poor infrastructure and storage facilities. During that meeting, he said the Government is determined to avert the wastage. This, therefore, means the country will boosts food

Uhuru hails Un support for health programmes President Uhuru Kenyatta has lauded the United Nations for supporting health programmes in Kenya. The President held talks with the Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS Michel Sidibe, who called at his Harambee House office. The President said the Government will work with UN to ensure prudent use of available resources and combat the spread of HIV/ Aids. “My government shares the UN’s philosophy of control of Aids, among other diseases. We need to pool resources to solve our common health problems,” Kenyatta said. He urged the UN to support production of ARVs to the regional level to reduce the cost of managing HIV/AIDS. While noting health is at the core of business to any society, the president added that the government was focusing on preventive health to ensure a healthy nation. He said by concentrating on prevention, the country would use the funds that might have been spent on curative care to support other priority areas of the economy. Sidibe said the UN will support Africa to use its medicinal trees and other natural resources to manufacture HIV/AIDS management drugs.

Digital contracteptive developed in the US A contraceptive computer chip that can be remotely controlled has been developed in Massachusetts. The chip is implanted under a woman’s skin, releasing a small dose of the hormone levonorgestrel. This will happen every day for 16 years, but can be stopped at any time by using a wireless remote control. The contraceptive, backed by Bill Gates, will be submitted for pre-clinical testing in the US next year, and possibly go on sale by 2018. The device measures 20mm x 20mm x 7mm and will be “competitively priced”, its creators said. Tiny reservoirs of the hormone are stored on a 1.5cmwide microchip within the device. A small electric charge melts an ultra-thin seal around the levonorgestrel, releasing the 30 microgram dose into the body. There are other types of contraceptive implants available, the researchers noted, but all require a trip to a clinic and an outpatient procedure in order to be deactivated. “The ability to turn the device on and off provides a certain convenience factor for those who are planning their family,” said Dr Robert Farra from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The next challenge for the team is to ensure the absolute security of the device to prevent activation or deactivation by another person without the woman’s knowledge. “Communication with the implant has to occur at skin contact level distance,” said Dr Farra. “Someone across the room cannot re-programme your implant.”

Popular imported cars cost up after duty hike Potential vehicle owners can expect to pay more for imported models after duty of selected brands was increased. The Government has increased import duty on brands that are in high demand by as much as Sh725,000. Import duty is normally calculated at about 25 per cent of the value of the car based by figures calculated by the Kenya Revenue Authority. Kenya imports about 12,000 used motor vehicles every month. The figure adds up to about 144,000 vehicles annually. The Car Importers Association says the increase has discouraged importers from shipping in preferred second-hand models because of higher tax. The Toyota Premio model is one of the more popular brands in Kenya and is attracting duty of up to Sh725,000. Dealers have switched to importing other models to match the increasingly price-conscious market. Duty has also been increased for other Toyota models such as Wish, Mark X, Rav4, Vitz, and Honda ‘Fit’. While the Probox is attracting

Britam to keep staff in Real deal

Price of cooking gas rising ment should remove taxes on Liquid Petroleum Gas (cooking gas). “Taxes contribute heavily to the high prices of gas,” he says. “It is recommendable to remove levies so that retail prices can come down and in turn, lure more Kenyans to embrace the commodity,” he said. He was speaking late last week during the African LPG summit at the Safari Park in Nairobi. The KNBS says consumption of gas has increased from 87.8 metric tonnes in 2010 to 92.9 metric tonnes in 2013. The high demand by Kenyan consumers seems to be driving up the price, a move that could see cooking gas become a luxury that not many can afford.

Real Insurance has 13 branches across the country including Nairobi, Nyeri, Mombasa, Eldoret, and Kisumu, where Britam too has a presence. The inclusion of Real Insurance’s staff is expected to increase Britam’s staff costs significantly. By the end of 2013, Britam’s employee costs had grown 56 per cent to Sh1.2 billion from Sh771 million in 2012. Despite these numbers, Britam, by retaining the new employees, will get CAK’s approval to acquire Real Insurance’s business in Kenya. Moves like this one give employees hope for job security in the future as the CAK takes astand against the loss of jobs in the private sector.

Chicken farmers earning 5 times below their potential Kenya’s poultry industry has the potential to increase earnings fivefold, Kenchic Marketing Manager, Humphrey Mwangi has said. Mwangi said the country produces more than 1.2 billion eggs a year but has the potential to produce
over 6 billion within the same period if it can meet standards set by the World Health Organisation (WHO). However, large scale export is still far off for the local industry due to the stringent international food export
standards. Robert Muchugia, the Support Manager for Sigma Supplies, a local poultry products company, says that farmers still face a lot of challenges despite the enormous opportunities created by a growing population and urbanisation,
HIGH DEMAND: Researchers from the WHO say Kenya’s egg consumption stands at 36 eggs per person per year.
Germany’s industrial sector has suffered its biggest drop in two years in May. The sector was weighed down by sharp falls in the construction and manufacturing sectors. Industrial production fell by 1.8 percent, the country’s statistics agency, Destatis has said. The fall was a surprise to economists, who were expecting the
industrial output to be unchanged. Without a vibrant Germany, the 18-member euro zone will struggle to expand. This is because the country makes up around 30 percent of the zone’s GDP, and it is the largest economy in the region. The Euro-zone output grew at a 0.8 percent during the first quarter, but
without Germany it would have contracted. The country’s statistics agency has blamed the timing of May bank holidays and weakness in the construction sector for the fall, but said geopolitical factors may also have had an impact. The Ukraine crisis and the impact on oil prices by the Iraq crisis are also believed to have contributed to
which promotes the egg industry through the diversification of people’s diets. Muchugia says egg production is still low with a layer in Kenya producing an average of 300 eggs a year, compared to countries like South Africa, where one layer can produce 354 eggs in the same period. Researchers from the WHO say Kenya’s egg consumption stands at 36 eggs per person per year against the WHO standard of 182. This means if Kenya was producing as much as WHO recommends, local farmers could make five times as much money as they do now by exporting the excess supply.
the industrial drop. Meanwhile in Kenya data in released by the Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning, Ms Anne Waiguru, for the 2013/2014 economic survey showed that the country’s output in the manufacturing industry grew by 4.8 per cent compared to the 3.2 per cent recorded the previous year.

Say the Truth Why cheat for selfish gains? Did you know that each lie you create and say hurts another person somewhere? Did you know that when you learn how to lie, you call for limitless repercussions that are silent but hard hitting? What if you lied that you were at home with your kid yet you were at your neighbour’s house with the man of that house? What if at that time your child gets burned by hot water and another neighbor comes to the babies rescue? Can you imagine of what your husband will do when he finds out where you were. Coast movie set to hit the big screen TUESday, JULY 8, 2014
A movie from the Coast is set to hit the big screen soon. The film, “Sio Riziki”, is being produced through a collaboration of Coastal Films Production Limited, Landline Productions, Timamu Effects and Sabby Angel Films. Mr Hassan Faisal the CEO of Coastal Films Production, spoke to XNews on the ongoing film fusion between Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and possibly Nigeria. “We want people to see the
positive side of the coastal region, a side away from the prostitution and witchcraft stories associated with the place,” said Faisal. Not only is it going to be a game-changer and source of employment but it is also solidifying amity between the four countries, bringing the west to east and taking the east to the west. Hassan said local film production is only concentrated
in Nairobi but those involved have failed to take it to the next level. He said this is going to be a good influence on the tourism market of the country. Salma Tamim, popularly known as Sabby Angel, and the owner of Sabby Angel Films, is behind the movie. “Sio Riziki is my company’s movie and so I chose to partner with Coastal Films Production in its making,” said Sabby.
Angel: Salma Tamin is the owner of Sabby Angel Films studio, which conceptualized the film Sio Riziki.

Nameless’ shades and durag Youth find hope at Hurricanes Academy
Nameless, officially named David Mathenge is regarded as the father of the Pulse generation in the local showbiz industry, when it comes to music. His songs feature catchy lines with danceable beats although he has been criticised for not putting much effort in his lyrics, which some say resemble nursery rhymes. Nameless rose to fame in1999, with his hit song ‘Megarider’, which propelled him to stardom. Throughout his music
career, the musician has managed to maintain his trademark style of sunglasses and a head gear. When he first came into the music he wore a mask, which he says was to create a mystery around him because of his stage name, but he later took off the mask and adopted sunglasses and a durag. As the fashion changed, he changed from the durag to a kangol but the sunglasses remained., which he still wears even at night.
Hurricanes FC Academy, in the heart of Huruma Estate, was established started in September 2014, and is dedicated to creating footballers from streets kids. The academy was started by former Harambee Stars player Titus Mulama, Steve Njeru, Nicholas Mutiso and Joseph Nyaga, who play for Rangers. The academy was started as a way to give back to society and teach others that football can give hope to the hopeless. “We do talent search ourselves, and
check the boys’ physical condition before we take them in” said Njeru, the Hurricanes coach. It’s a challenging undertaking mostly due to the financial contraints . “We have good players but challenges are many,” said Njeru. “We have to part with money to buy food for some of them because many are from poor families. “Titus sacrifices a lot for these boys as he is the one to buy boots and even training socks and other kits.”

Eric Wainaina’s song, Daima, was used to promote peace and unite Kenyans. Music has also been used to talk about oppressive governments and agitate people into change. During Kenya’s fight for independence, it was used as a medium of communication by the Mau Mau fighters because they could not read or write. It was the only way they could document their experiences on the road to independence. The most popular song being, Bara ya Rui rwa Ruiru (battle of River Ruiru) Kenya has seen the evolution of music from Boomba to Kapuka to Genge and now Afro-pop. But still it continues to impact people in different ways. Music
has also been used to talk about current issues like bad leadership, to create awareness about a particular thing. In 1986, Jermaine Stewart, a popular US musician released ‘We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off ’ to raise awareness about HIV /Aids at a time when it was not talked about much. Last year, Juliani released a song, Utawala, that addressed poor leadership and how it affects ordinary Kenyans as they struggle to survive. The song struck a chord with Kenyans making them to question their leadership more. In raising awareness, Daddy Owen and Denno collaborated in a song that talked of the disabled and how they get mistreated.

For Ameru, circumcision was a leap into adulthood
THE A MERU DANCE: Striping meant the boy has left his boyhood behind and is to be a man henceforth.
Like other African cultures, circumcision among the Ameru ushered a boy into adulthood responsibilities. Nchiibi was the ceremony for novices before circumcision. Before the initiation, a boy had to visit relatives, including distant ones. Circumcised young men, nthaka, led celebrations by singing and dancing to encourage the boys (iyii) to remain brave as they prepare
to face the ‘knife’. The Meru Community Resource Centre says the songs were meant to usher boys into adulthood. Nthaka danced with clubs, swords, blowing horns (kiania) with jingles fastened onto their legs. Young women also joined in the dance. On the eve of the ceremony, the candidate was to choose a caretaker who was to offer moral guidance. The caretak-
er was expected to be older or younger than the boy’s father because it was a taboo for a father or agemates to see the nakedness of a son. At the crack of dawn, the boys stripped and plunged into a river. “Striping meant the boy has left his boyhood behind and is to be a man henceforth. The cold water was to make them numb says Julius Nyagah, 57. Covered in a blanket, they were made
to pass over a sheep that was held onto the ground. This was to keep the evil and other bad omens at bay. They sat in a circle and waited for mutani, the circumciser. Nthaka kept singing while women sang from afar. The boy from the family that invited mutani was the first to face the knife. There was no anaesthesia. Crying was considered cowardly and drew condemnation and ridicule.

DELICIOUS: Kaimatis can be served at any time of day.

yogurt, water, butter, yeast, salt and syrup or sugar. One can also add cinnamon, lemon and/or ginger for variety in taste. Mix the flour, pinch of salt in a bowl and add the yoghurt and just enough warm water to form a thick batter. It should not be thick or too smooth either, this is what differentiates them from mandazis and mahamri. Beat the mixture until smooth then leave aside for at least three to six hours for it to rise. The yogurt is to make the kaimati dry after frying. Mix the yeast and sugar separately then cover and leave it
in a warm place to form bubbles. After the bubbles have formed, mix the yeast mixture with the batter and beat with a whisk until smooth. Leave it for half an hour to ferment. Heat the oil, then pick small portions of batter a and drop them in the hot oil. Fry until golden brown on all sides. They should be entirely immersed in the oil during frying. When frying is complete soak the dumplings in syrup or they can also be soaked in sugar for a sweet coating or even coconut flakes. They can be served hot or cold.

CR7 has undying love for fast cars To either lovers or haters of soccer, Cristiano Ronaldo (popularly known as CR7) is a name that is well-known by almost anybody in any household. From his Manchester United days to Real Madrid time, he has become a football icon, currently Ballon D’Or holder. Ronaldo has made a lot of money from his trade, making him realize his childhood dream of owning numerous sports cars. He is known to have a special flare when it comes to showing off a new car, having developed the weird trend of not sticking with the same car for too long. His private garage has plenty of space for all his dream cars. Cristiano Ronaldo’s car list has been growing over the years (2006-2014) and he has an incredible 19 cars. This has cost him a massive $4.9m (Sh428m) to keep feeding this passion he has of collecting cars. The most expensive car is by far the Bugatti Veyron, costing around $1.7m (Sh148m).

exotic: Hasma, a Chinese delicacy made from frog fallopian tubes, ready to serve.
Frog fallopian tubes are a delicacy in China Eating frog legs is common in France and those who find this unpalatable are probably used to the idea now. Eating frog fallopian tubes, however, is another matter altogether. Hasma or snow jelly are the fallopian tubes of the snow frog which is known as Xueha. It lives in the Changbai Mountains of northeast China. The provinces of Liaoning,
Jilin, and Heilongjiang are the major suppliers of hasma. The dish is a popular delicacy in China for decades and was once exclusively served to the emperors. It has since been made accessible to anyone with a taste for it is now sold in supermarkets and restaurants. The Chinese like it for its glutinous and chewy nature. The female frogs are harvested
from ponds, their favourite winter hibernation spots, strung together through the mouth and dried. When they have dried, they are skinned and the fat around the ovaries and oviduct peeled off and prepared for sale to restaurants and supermarkets. They are very expensive because they are scarce and are only available during certain times in a year. For preparation, the
hasma is soaked in water causing it to expand to sometimes three times its original size. It becomes translucent and slithery. It is then boiled twice with rock sugar to create a sticky texture. Once ready, the hasma is incorporated in soups, stews and desserts. There are even whole recipe books dedicated to the preparation of hasma.

Kiprop eyes world record in Monaco
performer: Kiprop, who holds the world lists in 800m and 1500m, claimed the fourth spot on the world all-time 1500m list with 3:27.71.
Since becoming part of the IAAF Diamond League in 2010, the Herculis meeting in Monaco has been the setting of many historic middle-distance races. Last year, Asbel Kiprop claimed the fourth spot on the world all-time 1500m list with 3:27.71. This year, the Herculis meeting will once more gather the world’s best middle-distance stars in Monaco on 18 July. Kiprop will be out in his word record attempt in perhaps his
most favourite hunting ground. Is he the man for sub 3:26? The two time world champion Kiprop quelled fears over his form after struggling in two consecutive runs in the diamond league series in Eugene and Rome with a dominating world lead run in the 800m in Paris this past Saturday. He crossed the line in a world -leading 1:43.34. Kiprop now holds the world lists in 800m and 1500m. He hinted his exclusion from the Kenyan team for this month’s Commonwealth games in Glasgow, Scotland maybe a bless-
ing in disguise in his record quest. “I have more time to practise and remain fit for Monaco, it has always brought me nice memories, maybe this will be the year I will finally get to beta the record, “said the lanky runner. “I have prepared for the season without injury and I feel in good shape. It’s only maintaining and training harder to achieve my goals this year,” he added. Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj, with 3:26.00 set in 1998 Golden Gala Rome, Italy is the current world record holder in 1500m.
Arturo Vidal on Van Gaal’s Man U radar Arturo Vidal is on Louis van Gaal’s radar as a summer transfer target, with the Manchester United manager an admirer of the Juventus midfielder who starred as Chile reached the last 16 of the World Cup. Juventus would be expected to demand as much as Sh4.8b for the 27-year-old, and Van Gaal wants another central midfielder following last month’s Sh3.4b addition of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao. The prospective valuation of Vidal is not thought to be an issue for Van Gaal, with one option being to offer a player as a makeweight. Nani has long interested Juventus and may be
deemed surplus to requirements by the Dutchman. Van Gaal also wants Kevin Strootman, the Roma midfielder, but the player will not return from a serious knee injury until later in the year. Van Gaal has already added Luke Shaw to his squad along with Herrera. After the departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, the 62-year-old’s priority is a topclass central defender – Borussia Dortmund and Germany’s Mats Hummels is his top choice, with Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen adding further options for the position. summer target: Van Gaal wants another central midfielder following last month’s Sh3.4b addition of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao.
Federation axes women’s teams from national league Top of Form Kenya Volleyball Federation has left out women’s teams for the fifth leg of the national league set for Bungoma on July 11. The men’s matches are, however, expected to go on
as planned. The decision to overlook the women’s teams was reached by KVF to give the national women’s team ample time to prepare for the FIVB World Grand Prix
set for later this month. The women’s teams are, however, expected to play in the KVF tournament set for the venue on July 12-13. The league was due for July 4 but was postponed
because schools in Bungoma County which were expected to participate were involved in county games. Some of the schools expected to play are Malava, Cheptil, Mukumu and Lugulu.
Some of the players from the schools eventually make it to the national team. The women national team is training at Kasarani gymnasium where a final squad of 12 players is expected to be
named next week. The team is due to leave for Mexico on July 23 and 23 to play three before travelling to Croatia via Germany on July 30.

Brazil vs Germany
lAST MAN: Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is the man Brazil strikers must beat.
Samba vs German Machine As Brazil and Germany prepare to do battle in their World Cup semi-final tonight, old stereotypes of both countries’ football philosophies are being rewritten. Amazingly for two World Cup powerhouses with 24 semi-final appearances, this will be just their second meeting in the competition after the 2002 final. Back then a rugged German side that battled it’s way to the final
with a series of 1-0 wins on the back of the best goalkeeper in the tournament, Oliver Kahn, faced a Brazil side containing a magical front three of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo. That night an uncharacteristic Kahn mistake put Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Brazil on their way to a fifth title. However, the only constants from 12 years ago may be that Scolari is back as Brazil boss and Germany
still have the best ‘keeper in the tournament in Manuel Neuer. Even Neuer represents the German’s style shift in the past decade with his sweeper-like ability to flee from his box and become an extra outfield player in building the play from the back. The German sides of recent years will be much more fondly remembered by the football world at large, yet that attractive football hasn’t got them over the line in
the final stages. Defeat in the final of 2002 was followed by semi-final defeats in 2006 and 2010. Brazil’s approach to hosting the tournament has been rather different.Winning at their own World Cup is all that counts, no matter what reputations or opposing players take a battering in the process. Scolari’s men committed 31 fouls in their hunt of Colombia and, in particular, James Rodriguez in
Refs too soft on Brazil, says Schweinsteiger Bastian Schweinsteiger believes hosts Brazil have been allowed to get away with ‘hard tackling’ at the World Cup so far - and has urged referees to be harsher in their punishment. Germany face Brazil in the semi-finals tonight in Belo Horizonte and Schweinsteiger is keen for the referee to keep a close eye on Luis Felipe Scolari’s side. The hosts committed 31 fouls during their 2-1 quarter-final victory over Colombia - who themselves offended 23 times - and Juan Zuniga’s foul even ended Brazilian Neymar’s World Cup by fracturing his vertebrae.
Schweinsteiger said: “I am all for a healthy hardness but some of Brazil’s fouls were over the limit.” “Brazilians are not only football magicians, hard tackling is part of their game - we have to be careful and so does the referee.” And Schweinsteiger said although ‘we are all very sad that Neymar is not playing’, Brazil’s squad will be even more tightly knit as they ‘will try to win the title for Neymar’. The 29-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder was also full of praise for the Brazilian coaching staff of Scolari and his assistant Carlos Alberto Parreira.
Friday’s quarter-final, the most of any side in a game at this World Cup. The strategy was hardly an isolated one, Brazil also committed 28 fouls against Chile in the previous round. Brazil’s poster boy Neymar insisted he had no problem winning ugly before facing the Colombians, but the ugliest sight of all for his fans, teammates and coaches was him leaving the field for the final time.
Voodoo priest to curse Germany
MISSING IN ACTION: Brazilian striker Neymar, will miss the rest of the World Cup due to injury.
Germany will have to contend with black magic as well Brazil’s Selecao in tonight’s World Cup semi-final as a voodoo priest prepares to cast a nasty spell on die Mannschaft. Brazil will be without injured superstar Neymar in Belo Horizonte, but black magic enthusiast Helio Sillman from Rio de Janeiro says his curse will hinder Joachim Loew’s team in the semi-final. “I’ll take their top player and bind his legs so he can’t run on the pitch,” said Sillman, referring to the voodoo doll of an undisclosed German player that will be cursed in
a ceremony before the game. In his shop “World of Orixas” in the northern neighborhood of Madureira, Sillman carries out a ritual before each Selecao game. Using a small football pitchshaped box as his alter, he puts inside lit candles in the colours of the opposing team and the voodoo doll of their most important player. Sillman’s curse on James Rodriguez did not stop the Colombian star from scoring in his team’s 2-1 defeat to Brazil in Friday’s quarter-finals. And he was powerless to prevent Selecao star Neymar from suffering a fractured vertebrae.

Giggs in control at Old Trafford training ground
Ryan Giggs will take charge of Manchester United when the players return for pre-season training on Monday. Giggs – who was announced as Louis van Gaal’s No 2 – will be assisted by Dutchman Albert Stuivenberg who has just been added to the new look backroom team. New United boss Van Gaal is still in Brazil preparing for Holland’s World Cup semi-final with Argentina and will leave the early training sessions to Giggs – who took charge the final four games of last season following David Moyes’ sacking.
Stuivenberg has worked with Van Gaal as Holland Under-21 boss. The 53-year-old will be expected to help the youngsters develop at United and be Van Gaal’s eyes and ears on the training pitch. Van Gaal has already brought in Frans Hoek and Marcel Bout at Old Trafford as he continues to re-mould the set-up. The Dutchman will officially takeover at United once Holland’s World Cup involvement is over. United’s players who did not feature at the World Cup will return to the Aon Training Complex in Carrington for the start of
pre-season training. The likes of Johnny Evans, Darren Fletcher and Ashley Young will all report for training along with Wilfried Zaha and Nick Powell who were sent out on loan last season. Players like Wayne Rooney, Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernandez who all featured at the World Cup will be giving extra time off after playing in Brazil. United travel to America at the end of this month to play a number of high profile friendlies against LA Galaxy, Roma, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

Ashley Cole in Italy to seal Roma deal Ashley Cole arrived in Rome on Monday to discuss personal terms with last season’s Serie A runners-up, AS Roma. Cole, 33, is a free agent after his Chelsea contract expired. His agent, Jonathan Barnett, confirmed at the weekend the former England international was considering several offers from foreign clubs. Roma were among those strongly linked with the left-back. The club tweeted a picture of him arriving in the Italian capital on Monday morning. He could be the second new arrival at the Giallorossi in a matter of days after Salih Ucan underwent a medical in the Eternal City at the weekend ahead of a move from Fenerbahce. “I believe in myself and in my quality and I’m sure I’ll be successful at Roma,” Ucan, 20, told reporters in Turkey prior to taking a flight for the Italian capital on Sunday. “I want to make the most of this opportunity and I think it’s the right chance for me.” By his own admission, Ucan is set to sign a two-year contract with the Giallorossi, who are preparing for their return to the Champions League next season. They have already signed Seydou Keita while Urby Emanuelson is expected to arrive on a free transfer from AC Milan.
Why Petra Kvitova loves playing at all-England Club Petra Kvitova plays so much better at the All England Club than anywhere else. And now she owns two championships to prove it. In one of the most dominant performances in a women’s final at Wimbledon, the sixth-seeded Kvitova of the Czech Republic overpowered 13th-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada 6-3, 6-0 in 55 minutes Saturday to add to her 2011 title at the grasscourt Grand Slam. “I know,” Kvitova said, “this is the best tournament for me.” Absolutely true. Her career record of 26-5 at Wimbledon

translates to a .839 winning percentage, compared with her marks of .667 at the three other majors and .681 at all other events. In 2014, Kvitova lost in the first round at the hard-court Australian Open, and in the third round at the clay-court French Open. But get her on the grass court, and those speedy serves and flat forehands really shine. “For sure, she was on,” Bouchard said. “We know that when she’s on, she’s very tough to beat. Especially on this surface.”

Federer eyes future success Wimbledon runners-up Roger Federer said he hoped his performance in the tournament would be a “stepping stone” to more success. The 32-year-old seven-time champion lost 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 6-4 to Novak Djokovic in a thrilling final. “I’m very happy to see that I can produce a performance like I did
the last two weeks,” said Federer. “That clearly makes me believe that this was just a stepping stone to many more great things in the future.” Federer has not won a Grand Slam title since Wimbledon in 2012, but played superbly throughout the tournament, losing only one set on the way to the final.
In a memorable match on Centre Court, the fourth seed fought back from 5-2 down in the fourth set to force a decider. But Djokovic broke in the 10th game to win his second title at the All England Club and his seventh Grand Slam crown. “It was a great match and I enjoyed being a part of it,” added Federer.
Winning or losing, it’s always something special in the Wimbledon final and something you’ll remember, even more so when the match was as dramatic as it was today. “I’m very pleased with the way things went throughout the match. It was a high-quality match and it was good stuff from both players.
“Clearly we both walk away happy from here. I mean, him happier than I am. But still, I’m happy overall.” Federer enjoyed the majority of the support from a packed crowd, which included the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Man United unveil new kit The new Manchester United home kit for the 2014/15 season has been launched with Chevrolet replacing AON as jersey sponsor. According to the club website, manchesterunited.com, the new kit “Proudly embodies the club’s purest and most authentic identity – the iconic red, white and black colours that are instantly recognised around the world.” The kit that bears the logo and name of car maker Chevrolet in place of insurance giants Aon,welcomes the return of the white collar, which for the first time is a ribbed crew neck design. The collar also has a subtle chevron finish, replicating the pattern used on the chest of United shirts from the early 20th century and in more recent times. A hidden button in the collar is unique to the shirt – red with a black trim and engraved with the club name – while there is a small label inside the back of the neck with the message “Youth, Courage, Greatness” to represent the club’s values. On the back of the shirt, below the neck, is a black devil from the club crest. Across the back is an engineered mesh in a series of chevrons to again emphasise the importance of the shape to United. It will be worn for the first time on Wednesday 23 July when the Reds face LA Galaxy as part of the Tour 2014, presented by Aon.

Luiz says Brazil’s fans will take place of missing Neymar and Thiago Silva Defender David Luiz is expected to captain Brazil in their semi-final showdown with Germany in Belo Horizonte tonight when the whole of this football-mad country looks on and prays His tears and passion during the national anthem have made him the figurehead of Brazil’s World Cup dream. And his stunning strike against Colombia guaranteed the hosts’ semi-final. Now David Luiz is ready to lead them to glory and go down as one of the nation’s all-time heroes. But while others might wilt – especially with Neymar injured and captain Thiago Silva suspended – Luiz has become Brazil’s main man. The defender, is set complete his Sh4.8b move from Chelsea to Paris Saint-Germain after the World Cup, scored a thunderbolt in Brazil’s 2-1 quarter-final win and celebrated in typical fashion by kicking the corner flag Luiz said: “I am living my personal dream but still Brazil is not in the final. “The semi-final against Germany is like a final and we know what’s in front of us. “We know we suffer big absences with Neymar and Thiago Silva. But now is the time for us all to demonstrate our pride and character. “We know we cannot fail because we have
the whole country with us. “They are supporting us, driving us on, they are creating an incredible atmosphere in every game for us to win. We feel like we cannot lose with them with us. Luiz has played and acted like a man on a mission in this World Cup, scoring against Chile in the last 16 and then his incredible free-kick against Colombia.
“They are a part of this team, driving us on.” Luiz is likely to be partnered by Bayern Munich’s Dante to complete a wild-haired duo of central defenders. But Dante has no doubt that they can overcome Germany to reach the final – and a potential showdown with bitter rivals Argentina.
EMOTIONAL: Brazil goalkeeper Julio Ceasar and defender David `Luiz. Luiz says the fans will push the team on in absence of Neymar and Thiago Silva.

Kittel wins third stage of Tour de France German Marcel Kittel headed a late sprint to win the Tour de France’s third stage from Cambridge to London on Monday evening. The Giant-Shimano rider, who has won two of three stages in this year’s race having triumphed on Saturday, prevailed as thousands watched on The Mall. Slovakia’s Peter Sagan finished second ahead of Australia’s Mark Renshaw, on the final leg in England. Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali retained the race lead, while Britain’s defending champion Chris Froome remains fifth. Kittel said his sixth Tour stage victory was among the biggest of his career. “No surprise with the winner, the only surprise is Andre Greipel was not there with him. He faded away after his Lotto-Belisol team-mates did so much work. With Mark Cavendish away there was no point in looking at anyone other than Kittel here on The Mall.” Froome and his Team Sky colleagues were similarly happy with their efforts over the first three days as they safely negotiated two tricky stages in Yorkshire and a slippery rainsoaked finish in London.
