Kenya in high Ebola risk, says WHO chief

Kenya faces a high risk of Ebola transmission, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced early today. The UN agency’s Representative to Kenya,

“Kenya is classified in group two; at high risk of transmission,” she told a news briefing in Nairobi.

Dr Custodia Mandhate, says the country is classified as level two, a high risk category, for transmission of the deadly virus that has ravaged West Africa.

Kenya in Ebola risk warning WEDNESday, AUGUST 13, 2014

From Page 1 Although she commended efforts the Government has taken to deal with cases of the epidemic, Dr Custodia called for urgent steps to deal with the issue, saying Kenya is a connection hub for the region. “Safety measures are critical and all sectors should be involved,” she said. And with the deadly virus only a plane ride away, the concerns are real. But Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has ruled out banning

Kenya Airways from flying into West African destinations as a safety measure. He said other airlines like Ethiopian Airlines and RwandaAir are serving the West African routes and land at JKIA. Kamau, however, acknowledged that such flights put Kenya at risk. “Kenya receives 76 flights a week from West Africa via Kenya Airways, RwandAir and Ethiopian Airlines and, therefore, at high risk. We do not recommend ban of

flights because of porous borders,” he said. He said the government has intensified screening procedures at all entry points to curb the ‘importation’ of the virus into the country. The outbreak has so far killed more than 1,000 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria and has driven the world into a high alert over possible spread. A Spanish priest who contacted the disease in Liberia is the latest to

succumb to the virus. WHO says it believes the virus has infected 1,848 people and killed 1,013, making it the deadliest outbreak in history. Only yesterday, the global agency approved the use of untested vaccine Zmapp for treatment of patients and help prevent the disease from spiraling out of control. Earlier today, Canada said it will donate up to 1,000 doses of the experimental Ebola vaccine to help

battle the outbreak in West Africa. The disease has flu-like symptoms and is spread through bodily fluids. Most sufferers of the disease die but doctors say early diagnosis and prevention helps. The Director of Medical Sservices, Dr Nicholas Muraguri, said on Monday that his office has set up isolation wards at Kenyatta National Hospital. An advanced diagnostic centre has also been set at the Kenya Medical Research Institute to deal with possible emergencies.

Romania clients excited by MPesa cash transfer service Kenyan mobile cash transfer technology MPesa, has been exported to Europe where it is picking up greatly. Romania was selected as the launch pad because many people in the eastern European nation still rely on cash. “From East Africa to Eastern Europe, that’s quite phenomenal when you think about it,” Michael Joseph, the head of Vodafone’s mobile money business, told AFP in Nairobi. “I think that this is something the rest of the world can look at, to say there are ideas that can emanate out of the developing world and take them to the developed world.”

M-Pesa was introduced in Kenya in 2007 by Safaricom, the country’s largest mobile telecommunications company, in partnership with British giant Vodafone. In Kenya, the system is used by 18 million customers and records more than eight million transactions daily. Vodafone is targeting seven million potential Romanian customers who operate in cash alone. The company targets to reach 300,000 customers by the end of the year. “The majority of people in Romania have at least one mobile device, but more than one third of the population do not have access to conventional banking,” Joseph said. out there: Romania citizens walk past an Mpesa sign. Extremists vow to wipe out Iraqi minority group, Yazidis

One of the world’s smallest and oldest monotheistic religious minorities faces extinction after they were trapped on a mountainous region in Iraq. Extremists have vowed to kill them. The Yazidis, a pre-Islamic sect based in Zoroastrianism and draws from Hinduism, Christianity and Judaism have been cornered in the Sinjar Mountains in the north. Nowhere is the crisis more evident than the Sinjar Mountains where about 40,000 minority Yazidis are hiding from the Sunni extremist fighters after fleeing homes. There are about 40, 000 Yazidis hiding in the mountain after fleeing fighters

allied to the Islamic S tate in Iraq and|Syria (ISIS) extremists. The situation has turned into a humanitarian crisis and was sparked by political turmoil in Iraq following the nomination of Haider al-Abadi as the new prime minister to replace Nuri al-Maliki. Haider has support from US and Iran but al-Maliki has vowed to fight the nomination. The new premierdesignate is the deputy speaker of the Iraqi parliament and a former aide to al-Maliki. US has announced it will deploy more troops to northern Iraq to help rescue the Yazidis, a day after an Iraqi helicopter bringing aid to the group

crashed after dropping food and water and picking up about two dozen Yazidis. The pilot died in the crash, but others survived, the Kurdistan Regional Government said. Kurdish rescue crews transported survivors to safety and took the injured to hospital, the government said. The military cited “technical failure” in the MI-17 crash. Fuad Hussein, the Kurdish Regional Government’s chief of staff alluded to possible pilot error. About 130 US marines and special operations forces have been dispatched to Irbil, US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said.

Third party tweets eat up Twitter profits Up to 30 million twitter users receive tweets through third-party applications, Twitter (TWTR, Tech30) announced after an analysis of its user base. This represents 11 per cent of the sites 271 million active users. Of that group, 23 million, get tweets “without any discernible additional user-initiated action.” In other words, their feeds are updating without them having to interact with Twitter. That’s not necessarily a great thing for the company’s bottom line -that’s 30 million accounts that aren’t looking at or clicking on Twitter ads and 23 million that aren’t necessarily actively interacting with their feeds. Twitter also said fake or spam accounts made up less than 5 pe rcent of its monthly active users.

Experts: China beating US as world economic power While more than half the world already believes that China is the leading economic super power, the World Bank’s International Comparison Program (ICP) is proclaiming they may pass the United States by the end of this year. Based on a system called purchasing power parity (PPP), experts believe that China will “beat out” the US in 2014. PPP is founded on the idea of how much an item would cost in various countries, making the way exchange rates influence buying and selling in different markets more transparent. By 2011, the Chinese economy had ballooned by 15 per cent,

President Uhuru Kenyatta today morning launched an electronic procurement system, which is set to automate government tendering and contract awarding processes. The e-procurement process, to be implemented under the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS), is expected to smoothen the transaction cycle from requisition, tendering, contract awards and payment. The module will be disseminated to all Ministries, departments, agencies and counties. Training and sensitisation of suppliers to use the system has been ongoing since June in readiness for today’s rollout. “Its benefits touch on all facets of our society-suppliers can now bid online, quality service delivery to public in National and County governments, enhanced and efficient management of our resources,” Dr. Kamau Thugge, Principal Secretary, Treasury noted in an earlier announcement. Treasury introduced IFMIS as a Public Finance Management reform initiative in 2003.

Four escape unhurt as train hits lorry in Dandora Four people escaped unhurt last night after a commuter train hit a lorry at a railway crossing at Dandora Phase 5, Nairobi. The lorry is said to have stalled at a railway crossing at about 7 pm leaving an approaching train little time to stop. The driver and his crew

jumped out and managed to escape before the train hit the lorry. Police say the lorry was carrying stones at the time of the incident and that the train was headed for Ruiru. Police are still pursuing the lorry driver. It took almost an hour to remove

the lorry from the scene as a crowd surged there forcing police to shoot to the air. A similar accident last year at the crossing Mutindwa left 13 passengers dead and a dozen others wounded. The bus driver failed to give way to an approaching

passenger train. Police and Nairobi county authorities demolished all structures near the railway line as a result. Train services on most routes near the city are a danger because of illegal structures near the railway lines.

NPSC to vet police recruits, 1,215 sent packing Police officers and Government officials risk prosecution for engaging in corruption during last month’s recruit exercise. Meanwhile, the National Police Service Commission has revoked the hiring of 1, 215 recruits after investigations showed malpractices were committed in centres from where they were picked. Chairman Johnstone Kavuludi said on Tuesday a repeat exercise will be done in the 36 centers at a date to be announced later. The exercise had been conducted on July 14 across 289 centres across the country where 10, 000 recruits picked. Investigations were, however, mounted after complaints from members of the public and independent bodies. The commission cancelled the results for the 36 centres after confirming the irregularities. “The malpractices found to have been committed in the centres do not meet the threshold of fairness,” Kavuludi said. The centrs where results were cancelled include Kandara Stadium, Gatanga Primary, Kigumo Bandera Secondary and Kangema General Kago all in Murang’a. Others are Kinoru and Nguthiru stadia (both in Meru), Amagoro Primary in Busia, Othaya Stadium (Nyeri), Doldol (Laikipia), Isanjiro (Kakamega) and Njoro in Nakuru, among others. The move will affect 21 counties. NPSC says it had mandated officers in charge of police divisions to conduct the recruitment. Those who presided over the exercise in centres whose results have been cancelled will be prosecuted if found culpable. The cancellation comes even as the Independent Police Oversight Authority seeks to annul the entire process. A case which the civilian police body filed at the High Court is scheduled for hearing on Wednesday.

100,000 sign petition against Modi US visit A petition asking President Obama to cancel the controversial Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to US has surpassed the 100,000 mark. This means the White House is required to issue an official response. Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), a New York based group which is spearheading the online protest against Modi, said the 100, 000 threshold was achieved Tuesday a week before the White House deadline of August 20. The petition urges Obama

to condemn Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for perpetrating violence against Muslims Sikhs and Christians. The petition went online on July 21 on the White House’s We the People website under a headline Cancel White House invitation to PM Modi. Petitions that cross a threshold of signatures on the website are reviewed by the administration. The overwhelming response is a sign that strong anti-Modi sentiments exist among American public.

We won’t put down Alcoblow, Kamau vows The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure will continue using alcoblow gadgets in the ongoing crackdown on traffic offenders. Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau says the gadget is fit for use in accordance with the law after undergoing all health tests. Kamau said the crackdown on drunk drivers had reduced road carnage

by 13%. “Why do people want to take us to the days when lives were lost every day by drunk drivers,” Kamau posed. Mr Japheth Muroki last week filed a case challenging the use of the gadget and speed guns before High Court Judge Mumbi Ngugi. Muroki sought a High Court order that the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) be

compelled to present certificates of conformation, manufacture and other documents to show that the devices meet the required standards. He also questioned the procurement of the devices saying the National Transport and Safety Authority had not advertised their procurement as required by law.

Kirubi: Why I honoured Obama’s invite this time When Capital Group Chairman Dr Chris Kirubi declined US President Barack Obama’s invite to dinner in Dar-es-Salaam last year, he attracted both pats on the back and criticism for his stand but he is nothing if not one to speak his mind. However, when the opportunity came for him to join the Kenyan delegation in Washington DC for the inaugural US-African Leaders Summit last week, he

The summit was an opportunity for us to tell our own story, paint a true picture of Kenya as a competitive investment destination,” he explained.

Still, he said, he did not regret his decision to turn down the earlier invitation. “It was an affront for Obama to come so close to Kenya,

There is a “clear evidence” linking too much exercise to increased chances of death for heart attack survivors. A study whose findings have been published in the US journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, says patients who run for more than 48 kilometers a week are at higher risks of cardiovascular related diseases. It analysed the relationship between exercise and cardiovascular disease-related deaths in about 2,400 physically active heart attack survivors with remarkable reductions in deaths from patients who were running less than 48 kilometres. Beyond this point, however, much of the benefit of exercise was lost.

100-year-old driver says he’s staying at the wheel One of Britain’s oldest driver Harry Kartz, 100, has not taken a test despite driving for 86 years, and insists that he won’t give up his car despite a new documentary showing him mounting a curb and drifting out of lanes while on the road. The great-grandfather is shown forgetting his indicators, mounting the pavement and even drifting into

Although drivers over 70 need to reapply for their licences every three years, their skills and their eyesight are not automatically reassessed and it is up to them to confirm they

Asked by the Daily Mail if he would ever give up driving, Mr Kartz, a former chairman of Aston Villa football club, replied: “When I’ve got to the stage when I’m not ready [to react to] other people’s actions. I don’t want to drive like an old man.”

Poor Kenyans depend on many sources of income MISERY: A new reports says many low income earners depend on relatives and friends to survive.

As the overall cost of living continues to rise, it has emerged that most low income Kenyans greatly depend on relatives and friends to meet their financial needs. While some households can comfortably afford to have three square meals a day, there

are some that are getting by on a wing and a prayer. A new survey compiled by Digital Divide Data, Bankable Frontier Associates and Financial Sector Deepening has found that poor households, especially in rural areas, rely on allowances from friends and

BEADY AFFAIR: Bead jewellers display their wares.

Selling beaded jewellery is a source of livelihoods for many Kenyans. Janet Njoroge, an artisan who is based in Kiambu, sells beaded bracelets for between Sh100 and Sh200. George Muturi, who makes beaded products in Kiambu, sells them for Sh300 a piece. Others, like Eastleigh-based, Jack Mainga, take things a step further by crafting beaded sandals and selling them for Sh3,000 a pair. Selling an average of 20

While the amount of money one can make from the craft will vary, some weavers make greater profits from hiring workers and selling their wares during events, festivals and in places like Maasai Market in Nairobi. Kazuri a bead company that hires 400 workers and Amani Craft, are shining examples of cottage industries that grew from small scale businesses into successful craft companies.

Tanzanian farmers are teaching their Kenyan counterparts how to use weaver ants to ward off fruit flies, which are responsible for huge crop losses and export bans on Kenyan goods. Fruit flies have been one of Africas’ biggest headaches for years. They destroy some 750,000 tonnes of Africa’s mangoes every year. This is about 40 per cent of the continent’s yield. They are also ‘quarantine pests’, meaning that import countries will not buy fruits from countries suffering from outbreaks. Kenya only recently had a three-year avocado export ban to South Africa, on the grounds that they were carrying fruit flies. The ban cost the country close to Sh1 billion. Many smallholders try to deter infestations by picking fruits before they are ripe or applying pesticides, but these are expensive and often

ineffective. Weaver ants offer a practical solution since they prey on harmful pests. The ants usually communicate by releasing a unique scent that causes all the ants in a colony to attack the fruit flies. Under a farmers exchange programme, farmers from Witeithie area of Thika District visited their counterparts in Tanzania to learn more about the weaver ants.

“Controlling pests using pesticides has become expensive and dangerous to our farms,” said Nathaniel Kiuma, one of the farmers who went on the exchange programme. The ants move in groups from one tree to another. The farmers help them them by tying ropes between mango trees and orchards to draw the ants from their anthills to the afflicted trees.

If you thought of Dick Clarke’s rocky house in Malibu was crazy, then you have not seen the astonishing Nautilus house in Mexico. Nautilus house is a monolithic seashell-shaped house built in 2006. It was designed by Javier Senosiain of Arquitectura Organica. It is surrounded by natural vegetation and gardens. This strange house was built for a young family which wanted to live in a structure out of the ordinary, but related to Mother Nature. The outer walls are smooth, painted white with earth like brown. A colourful glass

extension and stone steps lead to the door. Inside décor comprises white walls, natural floral gardens sandwiching stone steps and short pathways in the living room. Colourful wall extension transforms the living room into a glowing ambience in lieu of light. In the lounge, a stone pillar acting as a TV holder stands at the centre and dissolves into the stone ceiling. Flat, posh leather seats circumvent the ‘TV stand’ pillar. A spiral staircase winds up to upper simple, but splendid rooms. The Nautilus house is proof that man’s creativity has no limits.

Denmark Sh18b for security, healthcare weeding out: The Danish government is involved in a project that seeks to remove water hyacinth from Lake Victoria.

Denmark plans to invest Sh18 billion in Kenya in the next four years to support development projects. The projects include health services for the entire Kenyan population. One of the most significant challenges facing the country is making health care available to all its citizens, says a report by NGO, Child Fund International. Since about half the population is considered poor, Kenya has struggled to guarantee medical care to citizens, especially those in rural communities and densely populated slums. Danish Trade and Development

Minister Mogens Jensen in a recent visit to the country, said the funds will focus on supporting devolution, green energy and security. He said the governments are in negotiations on what projects in the three areas should be prioritised and implemented. Jensen said priority for devolution will be on health in the 47 counties. “I think it would be a major task of the new counties to build up health services that reach the whole population and we will be happy to assist the counties,” the minister said.

The funds will be used to assist in building capacity for security agencies, especially in the war against terror. “We will be looking at securing the area against terror by enforcing the work of the police and other areas that are necessary to combat terrorism, in Kenya and other countries in the region,” he said. Should it succeed, Maurice Blackburn, a law firm that deals in social justice, said any customer of the banks involved who has ever been charged late payment fees will be able to seek compensation. one for the road: A Keg client enjoys his drink. The drink may be phased out due to poor sales caused by increased prices.

Poor sales may drive out Senator Keg from market Senator Keg, a popular low-cost drink, may soon be phased out following a 75 per cent drop in sales as posted by East Africa Breweries Ltd (EABL). Consumers may miss the drink from the shelves after a tax imposed by the government caused the brewer to hike the price of the drink. The Government imposed a 50 per cent tax last year on the beer. Before the move, the brew had been exempt from tax in order to limit the consumption of illicit brews among low income consumers. “Senator consumers are price sensitive,” said Managing

Director Charles Ireland during the release of the company’s financial results earlier this month. The tax has caused the price of Senator to rise by Sh16. Ireland said EABL had tried to cushion consumers from the hike by absorbing Sh11 and only hike the retail cost by Sh5. This pushed the cost of the drink to Sh30 but failed to encourage many consumers to keep buying the beer. Over 30 per cent or about 4,000 of the 12,000 outlets that sell the Keg have closed down for lack of buyers. “The current position for Senator Keg is not a sustainable one,” Ireland said.

Dress pants, khakis, chinos have own rules

WEDNESday, AUGUST 13, 2014

When it comes to fashion, men are generally clueless. For many of them, getting the right pair of pants, other than jeans, to go with the shirt that they intend to wear can be quite a task. They mostly get it all wrong when it comes to chinos, khakis or dress pants. Most men cannot even tell those three pants apart to save their lives. Dress pants are usually part of suits and are meant for formal wear to official occasions and business meetings. They can be worn with a polo shirt but they are better off worn with a matching shirt and a tie. Only a chosen few can get away with wearing dress pants with sneakers, the rest please stick to formal shoes. Khakis are casual pants and usually worn with shoes one would wear

with jeans because they are a jeans alternative. They are usually baggy and thus cannot be worn to any formal event, it does not matter how good you think you look in them. Do not wear them with formal shoes as it will make you look confused. Chinos, on the other hand, are a step up in dressiness. Most people, not just men, cannot tell the difference between them and khakis, the most important difference is the fit. Chinos are usually much more fitting, slimmer, more tapered legs and create nice trim lines when worn, and are, generally more flattering. Chinos are okay for semi-formal occasions that is a nice dinner with family and friends. But as much as they dress up nice, don’t go too far with it, they still are not dress pants.

A toe tuck to fit into designer high heels

Women have an unconditional love for shoes, especially high heels and nothing beats a designer pair of heels like the favourite Christian Louboutin. But not all heels fit everyone. Some women tend to have wide feet or that one toe especially the little one sticking out and preventing them from wearing designer heels. But there is a procedure called toe tuck, so that is no obstacle. Toe tuck is a modification in which one’s toe is either chiselled or filed into submission or chopped off so that the feet fit into a good pair of heels. Sometimes it includes the lengthening of the toe so that it is the same length as the others. The procedure is done on both the bone and soft tissue of the toe. It requires full anaesthesia because it is very painful and carries along with it the high risk of nerve damage and infection. It can take 20 minutes to two hours depending on how complicated it gets.

bottom sense: Khakis, dress pants and chinos are appropriate for different occasions.

Cherono blames jetlag for race loss

Recently crowned Commonwealth 5,000 champion Mercy Cherono says fatigue blocked her from podium finish at the ongoing Africa Championships in Morocco. The Kenya police officer and IAAF World 5000m silver medallist said most Kenyan athletes are still battling jet lag after the conclusion of the Club games in Glasgow, Scotland, last week. “I tried to push myself forward to no avail. I was simply worn out and there was nothing I could do,” said the two-time world crosscountry junior champion. Her 16:08.81 time rounded up the top five positions. Ethiopian Almaz Ayana and Janeth Kisa settled for bronze at the Grande Stade in Marrakech. Ayana set a new

games record of 15:32.72 ahead of Dibaba (15:42.16) as Kisa closed in at 15:54.04. “That change of pace caught us off-guard. We didn’t expect Ayana to go all the way. We hoped she would slow. But we had no answer to the speed by the fresh Ethiopians considering our tired legs,” said Chereono. The Championships started on Sunday at the Grande Stade. The athletes took a 32hour flight from Glasgow to Marrakech and had to wait up for a similar period at Dubai International Airport for a connecting flight for Casablanca. Nine hours after landing in the Moroccan capital, the athletes had to endure another gruelling wait to catch a 23-minute flight to Marrakech.

Lampard is history, Cesc is the future Cesc Fabregas is the future of Chelsea and ideally suited to stepping into Frank Lampard’s central midfield boots, manager Jose Mourinho has said. Former Arsenal captain Fabregas, 27, signed for Chelsea from Barcelona in June after the London club’s record goal scorer Lampard left under freedom of contract at the end of last season. Fabregas scored in Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Ferencvaros in Budapest on Sunday, a day when Lampard was sitting in the stands for Manchester City after signing on loan from New York City FC. The match was the Blues’ penultimate pre-season friendly before next Monday’s Premier League opening contest at Burnley. Mourinho said on chelseafc.com: “Frank is the history of the club, history nobody can forget. “Fabregas is the future; history is history but the future is more important at the moment. “My opinion, and the opinion of my players, is that Fabregas is the right player to occupy that central position in midfield.” Chelsea returned from Hungary late Sunday ahead of their match with Real Sociedad on Tuesday. It is still too soon to know the full extent of an ankle injury, which forced Didier Drogba off during the first half against Ferencvaros. Drogba was quoted as saying on the club’s website: “I twisted my ankle and I couldn’t continue.

Farah recalls bathroom fall ahead of New York marathon

broken tooth: Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion Mohammed Farah says his tooth was removed after collapse.

Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion Mohammed Farah, who collapsed at the end of the New York Half Marathon in March, said the incident knocked him out. Farah, who is due to compete at this week’s European Championships in Zurich, says the incident forced him to miss the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. “I had a tooth taken out and it got infected. I went for a run, came back and collapsed,” said 31-year-old Farah. “I was in so much pain from my stomach. I had to be airlifted to hospital. They thought something was going on with my heart. “I had my phone in my pocket, so when I woke up I rang Cam (Levins), my training partner. He helped me up and got me on the bed,” he said. “It was crazy. I was in hospital (in Utah) for four days.” He added: “I had no-one there. I was in Park City by myself. We had to

decide whether to get flights for [wife] Tania and the kids. “I have been in pain. This was ridiculous. I couldn’t take it. That is why they thought there was something going wrong with my heart.” Those fears were unfounded, although it cost Farah any chance of competing at last month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Farah’s decision was greeted with dismay by some fans - unaware of the circumstances - who had bought tickets for the Games, expecting to see one of Great Britain’s Olympic stars. “It was scary at the time. But things happen and you deal with it,” said Farah. “I missed quite a lot of running. I wanted to continue the road to the Commonwealth Games. I did not want to disappoint my fans. I knew people had bought tickets. “But I wasn’t ready.” He added: “I did one track session.

Paula (Radcliffe) was timing me and she told me to stop. She had seen it. I wasn’t right. “Later on, Paula said I’d taken the easy option withdrawing from the Commonwealth Games, which is not fair as she’d seen me struggle. “If I am going to turn up, I have to be 100%. I am not going to get beaten at home.” Farah, who has fully recovered now, said he was so upset at missing out that he did not watch any of the Games on television. “I didn’t see anything,” he said. “It was too painful. I would have loved to have been there. But there was no way.” Farah will compete at the European Championships in Zurich from 12-17 August and is hoping to start making his mark on the track again after a season in which his marathon debut, at London in April, ended in a disappointing eighth-place finish.

Chelsea have made a shock enquiry over the availability of Queens Park Rangers forward Loic Remy following Didier Drogba’s injury. The Blues are still awaiting confirmation regarding the severity of Drogba’s ankle knock, sustained during the club’s 2-1 friendly victory against Ferencvaros on Sunday, and are keeping their options open. Remy had been set for Sh1.7billion transfer to Liverpool earlier this summer before the move broke down amid reports of a failed medical. He had attracted interest from

Serena learns from Venus WEDNESday, AUGUST 13, 2014

Serena Williams says she had been “taught a lesson” by her elder sister Venus in the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal. The 17-time major winner lost 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 in the 25th professional meeting between the sisters. It was Venus’s first win over Serena for five years and came after she had lost 6-1, 6-2 in April 2013. “Big sister taught little sister a lesson,” Serena said. “I made many mistakes today. When I make so many mistakes it is impossible to win against her.” However, Venus’s joy at reaching only her third final of 2014 was short-lived. She proved no match for Agnieszka Radwanska on Sunday, the No3 seed from Poland winning the title 6-4, 6-2. Radwanska will pose a serious threat to Serena’s US Open ambitions, although the younger Williams says her sights are set on next year. Serena’s setback comes after her tournament win in Stanford, California, last week in her first appearance since she was knocked out of Wimbledon in the third round by 25th seeded Alizé Cornet. And Serena, who has won only three titles in 2014, said: “I haven’t been able to get into the quarter-finals of a grand slam this year. At this point I’m really just looking forward to next year, to be honest.”

The coach has a delicate task in attempting to guide a squad worth more than Sh80.3billion to an improvement on their feats of last season. They won the Champions League but could only finish third in La Liga behind Atletico and a Barcelona squad formed for about Sh43.8billion. The new big attraction is Colombian

Rodriguez’s arrival has prompted immense excitement among Real Madrid fans - especially the city’s sizeable Colombian expat population, thousands of whom turned out to welcome their hero when he was officially unveiled at the Bernabeu last month.

Obiri ran from the front and did not conceded the lead in the home straight as she did at the Commonwealth Games where she was the hot favouirite to win gold but was beaten in the final 200m It was revenge of some sorts for Obiri (4:09.53) who was forced to sixth in the Scottish capital with Chepng’etich crossing the line unchallenged. Chepg’etich, a former world junior champion, faded to fifth in 4:13.46 while Selah Jepleting was eighth in a race that Ethiopian Dawit Seyaum bagged silver while Moroccan Rababa Arafi gave the hosts bronze. There was yet another gold for Kenya as Jairus Birech lead a podium sweep in the 3000m steeplechase. Birech, took the honours in 8:34.79 with Jonathan Ndiku clocking 8:37.67 for the second medal, two seconds ahead of Ezekiel Kemboi who saw his dreams of winning a first ever African title end for another edition.

Cristiano Ronaldo upstaged new teammates Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez and homecoming hero Gareth Bale as Real Madrid beat Sevilla 2-0 in Cardiff on Tuesday to win the UEFA Super Cup. World Cup stars Kroos and Rodriguez were making their Madrid debuts, while Bale was returning to his hometown, but it was Ronaldo, characteristically, who hogged the spotlight with a brace in the Welsh capital. The Portugal captain claimed a 30th-minute opener from Bale’s cross and then slammed home a second goal shortly after half-time to earn the European champions what could be the first of six trophies this season. “We knew this would be a complex game, but we played well and created goal-scoring opportunities,” said Ronaldo, who was named man of the match by his former Manchester United mentor Alex Ferguson. On Kroos and Rodriguez, he added: “These are two crucial players for us. They played well and they helped the team win this important trophy.” While Sh9.2 billion new recruit Rodriguez had a modest debut, Madrid’s new-look attack — which cost roughly sh45.3billion to assemble — showed ominous flashes of quality. Victory gave Madrid only their second Super Cup, after a maiden triumph in 2002, and enabled Carlo Ancelotti’s side to avenge a costly 2-1 loss at the hands of Europa League winners Sevilla in La Liga last season. “The team played very well, especially considering we didn’t have much time to prepare. “Toni Kroos and James played well. James had a few more troubles than Kroos,” said Ancelotti.
