No new PSVs for City to ease jams

R

egistration of Public Service Vehicles in Nairobi has been suspended in an attempt to rid the capital city of traffic jams. Those already in operation have been

issued with fresh directives in another radical attempt to rid the city of chronic traffic jams. Five round-abouts along Waiyaki Way, Uhuru Highway and Mombasa Road will also be removed in measures

unveiled yesterday by Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau. The CS was accompanied by Governor Evans Kidero. Matatus will be required to take a maximum of five minutes to drop

and pick passengers at bus stops. They will also be required to spend only 40 minutes at bus termini. Those who flout the rules will have their licenses revoked.

No new PSVs for City to ease jams From Page 1

Handcarts and trolleys have been banned from city roads in what the Government says will go a long way towards reducing congestion. The directives are contained in a redesigned city’s mass transport system which the minister said will save the country up to Sh227 million lost daily to traffic jams. “According to research by the World

Bank, traffic jams cost the city around two percent of the country’s GDP annually,” Kidero said “It does not make sense for one to take 45 minutes to fly from Entebbe to Nairobi then spend two hours from the airport to the city centre. This is killing business,” Kamau said. The redesign was based on a report by a Task Force which blamed over-supply of PSVs on majority of roads in the city.

“We have stopped licensing of new PSVs until a demand audit is conducted to give us figures of where we need new vehicles and by how much,” Kidero said. Nairobi has more than 500,000 vehicles with 7, 000 of the 8, 000 vehicles registered each month operating in the county. The Government steps are expected to allow matatus plying city routes to operate at maximum capacity and ease

pressure on roads. The five roundabouts to be removed along Uhuru Highway are at State House Road-University Way, Kenyatta AvenueHaile Selassie Avenue and Bunyala Road-Lang’ata Road intersections. The roundabouts will all be replaced with signalised junctions. It is estimated that the move will ease vehicle flow as 70 per cent of traffic build-ups are reported to be developed

from the junctions. “On any given day, you can only process traffic from one given direction. We want to now upgrade this into a signalised junction so that at any given time, you have something that enables you to have simultaneous movement,” County Executive for Transport Abdullahi Mohamed said.

Gbagbo’s wife jailed for 20 years over role in Ivory Coast election chaos

convicted: Simone Gbagbo was accused of disturbing public order and organising armed gangs but her daughter Marie Antoinette described the jail term as “a sign of political justice”.

Ivory Coast’s former first lady, Simone Gbagbo, has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for her role in the violence that followed the 2010 elections. Gbagbo, 65, had been charged with undermining state security. Her husband, former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo, is awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court at The Hague. More than 3,000 people died in the violence that followed the presidential poll after the former leader refused to accept defeat to Alassane Ouattara. She and her husband were arrested in 2011 after troops

stormed a bunker where the pair had taken refuge in the main city, Abidjan. And it was in the same city where Gbagbo - once called the “Iron Lady” - faced trial. She was also accused of disturbing public order and organising armed gangs. The court unanimously sentenced her to 20 years, twice as long as the prosecutors had asked for. Her daughter, Marie Antoinette Singleton, told BBC the sentence was unfair and a sign of “political justice”. “Why would you want to double

it? It’s not about justice, it’s about getting rid of political adversaries.” “If we say that something wrong happened, it happened on both sides. Nobody looked into bringing all responsible parties to trial,” she said. Simone Gbagbo’s lawyer said they would appeal. Laurent Gbagbo, is facing four charges at the ICC in The Hague, including murder, rape and persecution. The ICC had issued an arrest warrant for Simone Gbagbo too, but this was dismissed by the Ivorian government.

Do you think MPs are trying to extend their stay in office by switching election date to December?

Cicilia Syokau

Mungai James MPs are not trying to extend their term. In my view, if elections are held in August, they might interfere with national schedules, such as the school academic year. Children will still be in school and the fiscal year will be interfered with.

Elizabeth Mwala Yes. The Constitution clearly states the election date is August. The only way we can change the dates is by engaging the public and through parliamentary processes. The new date cannot work properly because this might cause disorder in future elections.

Robert Sifuna Yes. They definitely want to extend their time. MPs want an extension by three months yet in the five years they will have been in office, they are yet to do anything that benefits those who elected them. They just want the three months to enrich themselves.

Of course yes. We are used to MPs behaving this way. They do not have good intentions. There is no way they MPs will switch the dates for a noble cause. That is how it is.

Githurai stripping suspect finally arrested

127 lucky Kenyans will have over Sh2 billion in their bank accounts within next 10 years

A third suspect accused of stripping a female passenger in Githurai last year has been arrested after three months on the run. The petrol attendant was arrested yesterday in Naivasha where he had been hiding since December when his accomplices were arrested. He was traced there three months after being on the run and was expected to be arraigned in court today. Already, two suspects in the case, Nicholas Chege Mwangi and Meshack Mburu Mwangi were presented in court in December when they denied that on the night of September 19 and 20 at Millennium Petrol Station in Githurai 44, they jointly with others not before the court robbed the 21-year-old woman,. They face the death penalty in addition to a 10-year jail term or enhanced life imprisonment.

More than 127 Kenyans are set to become ultra-high net worth individuals (UHNWI) with more than $30 million (Sh2.7 billion) in the bank within the next 10 years. According to the 2015 Knight Frank Global Wealth Report, a study that shows which nations are home to the wealthiest individuals, the next 10 years are going to give rise to a new stock of African millionaires. Knight Frank’s report says that in 2014, South Africa was home to 616 UHNWIs (people worth more than US$30 million/ Sh2.7 billion). This the highest number on the continent, ahead of Egypt (276), Nigeria (210) and Kenya (115). By 2024, South Africa’s UNHWIs will increase by almost 50 per cent to a total of 903 individuals. Over the same period, Kenya’s UNHWIs will increase by roughly 82 per cent, giving the country about 242 individuals with billions of shillings in the bank. The United States is the world’s biggest UHNWI nation with 40,581 super-rich individuals, followed by Japan (16,703 individuals), Germany (11,679 individuals), the UK (10,547 individuals) and China (7,905 individuals). Together, they round up the top 5.

More students to get varsity admissions The number of students joining public universities this year will increase by about 10 percent compared to last year. However, 59 percent of those who attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ and above in last year’s KCSE exams will be forced to seek admission in private universities, colleges or technical institutions. This means that some 88, 333 students who qualified to join universities will miss places in public institutions. A total of 149, 717 candidates in last year’s KCSE examinations got C+ and above. According to Commission for University Education (CUA) chief executive Prof David Some, 61, 384 are likely to get admission in the public varsities. This will represent a 9.6 percent increase in the number of candidates getting admission to public universities. In 2014, only 56, 000 candidates got the admissions. The

increase has been attributed to increased capacity of the institutions. “We receive from the universities what their capacities are and capacities are pegged on staff and infrastructure,” Prof Some explained. Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi welcomed the increase. He said more students attained the minimum entry grade and as such, more are still likely to be left out. They spoke yesterday in Nairobi during a meeting with Vice Chancellors and chairmen of university councils. Prof Kaimenyi said the government is in the process of establishing 60 more Technical Training Institutes in the constituencies that don’t have them in order to boost their enrolment capacity to 75,000 students. He also called on the commission to, “strengthen,” mechanisms that will ensure students pursue the courses of study they selected.

Those who grow mangoes for export are set to benefit from a recent trade deal between Kenya, Tanzania and the Middle East, officials from the International Trade Centre (ITC) have said. The three countries recently signed a business deal after participating the Gulfood Show, one of the world’s largest food and hospitality exhibitions, which was part of a project implemented by ITC. The expo took place in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, which is a key entry point for African products in the region and beyond. Shiru Mwangi of

Kenyan mango exporters have already made more than $1.1 million (Sh100 million) over the past few months, data from the Export Promotion Council has revealed.

PRICE DRIVER Severe drought likely to push milk prices up The price of milk is likely to rise in the coming weeks following a severe drought that is wreaking havoc in various parts of the country. Production from livestock has also been affected especially in the arid and semi-arid regions of the country, states a recent report by the Ministry of Devolution and Planning. “In pastoral areas, normal

pasture and water sources have been depleted and availability of milk has declined. In addition, livestock prices are on a downward trend and malnutrition problems are on the increase,” the statement, which was released some time ago indicated. Recent price hikes in some areas suggest that milk prices could even double across

the country if the drought persists. Last month, a litre of unprocessed milk doubled to Sh60 from Sh30 in Trans Nzoia due to low production by cattle, which was fuelled by the ongoing drought. There has also been an increase in the spread of drought-related diseases and a severe shortage of food for milk-producing animals.

US unemployment rate falls to 5.5pc in February, report The unemployment rate in the United States of America fell from 5.7 per cent to 5.5 per cent in the past year said a report by the Labour Department in the US. The report also said the US had added 295,000 jobs in February compared to January’s 239,000 jobs, showing that in some sectors like construction, health care, and transportation had job gains. There were also job gains in food and drinks outlets, professional and

business services, and warehousing but employment in mining fell over the month. In February, average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 3 cents to $24.78 (Sh2266) with earnings up by 2 per cent over the year. The labour force participation rate fell to 62.8 per cent from 62.9 per cent, as more people made themselves available for work

The strong jobs figures led to a rise in the value of the dollar, it was the 12th month running that the economy added more than 200,000 jobs, the longest such run since 1994. Market analysts are now speculating that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates in June this year given that after the jobs report was released investors sold US Treasuries, a sign that many anticipate a rate rise.

a work of art is a scream of freedom.

e leisurely takes a stroll down the Mukuru slums, studying his environment. His eyes stealthily scavenge the environs taking note of everything. His attention span is on overdrive so as not to miss the slightest detail. His ears, keen to hear as much as he can. Once he is satisfied and is sure the images and sounds are safely registered in his mind, he dashes to his little studio, one he shares with six other artists, and quickly paints what he has seen before it fades from his memory. As opposed to painting the negative aspects of his neighborhood, Adam Masava, an impressionist, strives to bring out the slums in good light. Once in a while, he covers the slum walls with bold brush strokes and bursts of color to spread peace and anti-drug abuse messages, a move that has contributed to positive behavior change in his community. In Mukuru, he is known by many. Mention his name and you will be promptly directly to him. Little

children always mill around him eager to learn from his free art lessons. Every Saturday, Adam pours out his skills and experience onto the children, who reciprocate his hard work by winning various art competitions like the Kiwi Children’s Painting Contest and Doodle for Google, among others. “Together with a South Korean NGO, Good Neighbors, we offer a three months program free of charge to help the slum children keep busy and stay away from trouble,” said Adam. He nostalgically recalls how he started the program back in 2010. The program was well received by locals who hailed him for his ideas to transform and mentor the young ones. But months into it, he was met with the challenge of accessing material and funds. But this only made his resolve stronger. “Initially, I was all alone and started with about 100 children but was later overwhelmed by the number hence decided to cut down to a feasible number and involve partners who could help me realize the dream. That is how Good Neighbors came on board,” said Masava. Despite the presenting challenges,

Masava has managed to traverse the globe showcasing his works in international exhibitions and rubbing shoulders with other international artists. He is also an active member of a community project known as Art Against Poverty, which imparts management and life skills training to upcoming artists and helps them organize exhibitions. It is probably his dedication to spreading positive messages and passion for painting that has seen him get nominated for the prestigious Transform Kenya Awards 2014, alongside bigwigs like Churchill Ndambuki. Although he did not win, the awards made him feel validated and gave him the much needed boost to continue his work. “I could not believe it when I was told I had been nominated under the art and culture category. I thought it was a hoax. It was not until I got numerous emails and calls from friends telling me they will vote for me that it actually hit me,” said an ecstatic Masava. To him, art is not only his livelihood but his first love. It is also the tool he uses to bring out positive change in society and give hope to hundreds of slum children.

T

he Maasai are probably the most famous Kenyan tribe Kenya, perhaps because they have managed to uphold their culture and tradition longer than most others. The Maasai have been used to identify Kenya’s sense of culture when marketing our country abroad. Other than their incredible warriors who can kill lions with bare hands, the Maasai are also known for their intricate hairstyles. Women shave their heads bald or wear very close-cropped styles. The men, however, spend hours styling and grooming each other’s elaborate hairdos. Warriors are the only members of the Maasai community who wear their hair long, by weaving in thinly braided strands. This marks a passage into warriorhood. In Maasai culture, lion symbolism is important. A man’s long “mane” represents strength, protection, and masculine beauty while styles consisting of tiny two-strand twists accented with colorful silk roses or sculpted into a bow and arrow shape represent a recent lionhunting victory. The reddish color of their hair comes from clay and red ochre, a natural earth pigment found around volcanic regions. It is mixed with animal fat to get a grease-paint consistency before being applied onto the hair. This mixture dries quickly and covers surfaces thoroughly. The man’s carefully tended hair is shaved off by his mother during a transition from warriorhood to elderhood in a ceremony called the Eunoto.

Capturing the essence and spirit of a horse using driftwood is not easy. Doran has to make sure that each piece of driftwood matches the overall look of the sculpture. To make a life size sculptuee it can take him and his team of craftsmen close to 3,000 hours to complete. Doran has been invited all around the world to showcase his works at various exhibitions.

ward-winning Kenyan actress Lizz Njagah and her film maker husband Alexandros Konstantaras are a perfect example of a successful interracial relationship. Despite their cultural dissimilarity, the couple share a common ground which draws them together. “As time went by, we delved deeper into each other’s person and what we encountered is a love that we built on a strong foundation,” Lizz told XAccess. Lizz also adds that collaborative respect, commitment and trust in a relationship dwarfs any unlikeness between people. Besides that, she believes the world has changed and is more accepting of mixed relationships. To their amazement, their families are understanding and accepted their union from the beginning. Affirming Lizz’s words, most of the people in mixed-race relationships attest to the growing acceptance. We are now livinb in an era where there is forbearance and the ability to comprehend that it is okay to mingle outside social and cultural barriers. But even with such open mindedness, interracial couples do not escape the occasional stares and whispers. These among other challenges can be a threat to a relationship. However, focusing on the similarities, setting a concrete foundation, and fostering mutual respect begets love. Cultural beliefs definitely come into play in relationships. Above these differences, a couple must find a mutual ground with the same core values that keep them going. Relationship expert Dr Chris Hart agrees that multicultural couples can face disapproval from their families especially if they are more conservative. This, he says, can lead to misunderstandings over cultural issues. “However, multicultural relationships tend to form between couples who are aware and sensitive to these issues - and so they’re better able to deal with them,” he

know you are together out of overwhelming love and that is more important than anything else. If your family fails to accommodate your relationship then you will have to settle on what really matters to you. Whether you will bend to their will or choose your relationship is your own decision to make. Whatever you settle on, set boundaries when it comes to your personal issues. No matter the outcome, let you partner know what your family and friends think of your relationship. This will give them a heads up on what to expect. But also, remember to be

discreet in case of any disapproval. Other than fear of family’s response, some people worry too much when people look at them in public. The truth is, they will never stop looking but this does not mean you should always assume the worst. They could be looking at you out of admiration. It is wise to ignore what strangers think and say about you. Doing this shows you are secure and how much you believe in your relationship, in spite of what on lookers expect. Sometimes blame may not be on culture but

historical hurt that ancestors subjected one another to. How unreasonable and insensitive it would be to make people who are happily in love pay for the past mistakes of an ancient generation. Matters of the heart can be a mystery and that is why you cannot choose who to love. And when you find that person who lights up your world, makes you feel good and evokes the best out of you then hold on. Race and ethnicity or historical pain should not come in the way of something that could be beautiful.

Is my boyfrIend ashamed of me?

I have been seeing this guy for the last eight months but recently was shocked when I found out that he tells people we are just friends. What hurts me more is that we are intimate and I even introduced him to my sisters. We have a mutual friend who disclosed to me that my boyfriend denies me in public especially when he is with his friends. When we are together, he acts all nice and loving but barely holds my hand in public. At first I thought he was just being shy but now I am convinced he is ashamed of me and only using me. I do not know how to confront him. —Victoria

Dear Victoria,

It is absolutely wrong for anyone to evoke emotional feelings in a person when they have no intention of loving them. If what your friend told you is true then your boyfriend does not deserve you at all. He is not the type of person for you to keep banking your emotions on. He is depreciating

your value as a person. But for you to find out the truth, you must confront him with your doubts. He is the only one who can give you the answers you want. Once you hear his side of the story then it is up to you to decide what step you want to take. And next time you start dating, do not rush to introduce a boyfriend to your

he three-day Mercedes Benz Fashion Week took place last week in Johannesburg. Fashion designers from South Africa paraded their newest and best collections on the runway , but it was the men’s collection from three different male designers that caught the attention of the audience. Arnold Phasha showcased a modern menswear collection featuring midi and mini dresses with maroon as the theme colour. Marble motif, black lace and bronzed jackets was what designer David Tlale brought to the runway a collection which included dresses that Kanye West would gladly wear! Crop tops, (yes crop tops for men!) sheer vests and fur coats designed by Armand Dicker amazed the audience. Here is a look at the unique collections and it had us wondering if Kenyan men would you wear any of these designs?

Kayange ready for 7s rugby return Former Kenya National Rugby 7s captain Humphrey Kayange says he is ready to return to action for the national side. Kayange has been out of action for more than seven months after picking an ankle injury in last year’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The national sevens team is preparing for the sixth and

I am ready to return to the pitch if the coach asks me to,” Kayange said. “I’m glad my absence didn’t affect the team as the younger players took charge and did us

proud in Wellington and Las Vegas,” he said. “Making it to the squad will not be easy as I will have to fight it off with younger, energetic and skilful players who are gradually stamping their authority. That is why my position is not guaranteed,” he said.

HUMILIATED: James Taylor (right) was dismissed for just one run as Bangladesh bowler Taskin Ahmed (left) celebrates during the 2015 Cricket World Cup tie.

Bangladesh knock shambolic England out of cricket WC England were knocked out of the World Cup in dismal fashion as Bangladesh won by 15 runs to reach the quarter-finals. Set 276 to win, England were bowled out for 260 with nine balls unused despite Ian Bell’s 63 and Jos Buttler’s 52-ball 65, while Rubel Hossain claimed 4-53.

Bangladesh’s 275-7 in Adelaide was built on Mohammad Mahmudullah’s superb 103 and 89 from Mushfiqur Rahim. Mahmudullah and Rahim, who are married to two sisters, put on 141 off 144 balls for the fifth wicket after Bangladesh were struggling at 99 for four in the 22nd over.

England have won only one of their five Pool A games and face a dead rubber against Afghanistan on Friday. Bangladesh’s victory also secured Sri Lanka’s place in the last eight, alongside Pool A winners New Zealand and Australia. Mahmudullah said his side showed

character as seen in the end results: “We are really impressed by the attitude of our boys. All the boys chipped in. I tried to bat properly, I didn’t think too much. Mushfiqur at the end was the aggressor and it was a good partnership. We thought we might have been 15-20 runs short, but we knew if we could get early

wickets we were in. It’s really special for us.” “The way the boys fought in the middle was very special. We still believed that if we got the wickets, we would have a chance to get in again. If we play to the best of our ability we can beat anyone.”

Mercedes will not try to halt the fierce rivalry between Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, team boss Toto Wolff said. The feud that came to a head when Rosberg drove into Hamilton on the second lap of the Belgian Grand Prix at SpaFrancorchamps last August was good for Formula One, Wolff added. But the British and German rivals must not cross the line of what is acceptable again. “We are not going to change our approach in terms of philosophy on how to let the drivers race. Even if it is not always easy. For us, for our

brand, for Formula One, it was important to let them fight, one against the other,” the executive director of the Mercedes AMG Petronas team said of the Hamilton-Rosberg duel that marked 2014 and is about to resume. Wolff said Mercedes had understood going into the Belgian race that the rivalry was reaching a peak. He indicated that the team felt there had to be some kind of confrontation to clear the air. “If you have no emotion in this sport, if you stay rational all the time, you lose a lot and the sport loses a lot and the way we run the team is with emotion.

Kalusha Bwalya dismisses Figo shot at Fifa presidency

NO TO FIGO: Zambia legend Kalusha Bwalya, the 1988 African Footballer of the Year, claims most associations have already decided their choice for the Fifa presidency.

African football legend Kalusha Bwalya says it is too early for Luis Figo to challenge for football’s world governing body presidency Fifa. Figo, 42, a former world player of the year, is one of three candidates set to challenge Sepp Blatter on 29 May. “Luis Figo was a fantastic player, a worldclass player,” said Bwalya, Zambia Football Association president. “I’d have loved to see Figo go into the Portuguese football association, learn the ropes then come out.” Bwalya, who is also the executive member of

the Confederation of African Football (Caf), added: “There are other former footballers, like Davor Suker, who’s heading an association in Europe (Croatia). “It’s the logical way but he (Figo) has decided to go for the big position. It’s going to be very difficult in my opinion.” Bwalya, the 1988 African Footballer of the Year award winner, said most of the associations have already decided who they will vote for, for the Fifa presidency. He said Africa has decided to back Blatter for another four-year term despite the Swiss having been at the helm since 1998. “We as Africa - myself included - have said we

madrid face Schalke with eye on Champions League quarters Holders Real Madrid are chasing a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals and further entries into the competition’s record books when they host Schalke on Tuesday. The defending champions enhanced their status as the most successful European club of all time when they beat neighbours Atletico Madrid to collect a 10th Champions League crown last May. Victory over Schalke would be Madrid’s 11th successive win in the competition, following a 2-0 triumph in the first leg of the last-16 tie in Gelsenkirchen in February, and this would represent a new Champions League record. Carlo Ancelotti’s men are chasing a record-equalling 12th straight home win in Europe’s premier club tournament, although they will do so following a domestic setback at the weekend. Real went down to a 1-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, allowing bitter rivals Barcelona to return to the top of La Liga with a 6-1 demolition of Rayo Vallecano the following day. Defeat to Athletic followed a 1-1 draw against Villarreal and Ancelotti

has urged his all-star attack to start firing again as soon as possible. “The team is compact and focused on the targets that we have to keep fighting for,” said. “We have to fix the problems quickly. It sounds strange to say that Real Madrid has attacking problems when we have scored so many goals this season but it is the truth.” Schalke must hope that these unusual misfiring tendencies continue, having endured the Madrid forward line at its most brutal last season. At the same stage of the Champions League, the Spanish giants beat their Bundesliga opponents 6-1 away before closing out a 9-2 aggregate scoreline. The assignment remains an incredibly tough one for Schalke, who won for the first time in five games across all competitions on Saturday when they beat Hoffenheim 3-1. Madrid captain Sergio Ramos (hamstring) and playmaker James Rodriguez (toe) will miss out once more. Kevin-Prince Boateng’s booking during the first leg means that he is unavailable to Schalke coach Roberto Di Matteo due to suspension.

will back Blatter for another term because he has the requisite passion to carry football in the next four years,” Bwalya said. “From where we’re standing, it would have been better for him (Figo) to start at association level to know the challenges. He would have been better prepared. “In this situation we have made a commitment to president Sepp Blatter. We are happy with the way he has run things.” Figo, 42, whose career included successful stints with Spanish clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid, will also face competition from Dutch football federation president Michael van Praag and Jordanian Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein.

Welbeck nets winner and parties like it’s ‘99

T

IN YOUR FACE: Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck celebrates his after netting the winning goal at Old Trafford to sÍend his former club Manchester United crushing out of the FA Cup.

here was none of that decorum nonsense from Danny Welbeck. When he scored the goal that knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup he knew exactly what to do. He partied, like it was 1999. Welbeck returned to Manchester United as Arsenal’s match-winner as the FA Cup holders sealed a semi-final place at Wembley. The England striker Welbeck joined Arsenal from United on deadline day in September - and came back to score the goal that gave the Gunners their first win at Old Trafford since 2006. It ensures Louis van Gaal, the manager who sanctioned his sale, will almost certainly end his first season empty-handed. Nacho Monreal gave Arsenal a firsthalf lead but Wayne Rooney equalised with a flying header from Angel Di Maria’s cross the high point of the Argentine’s night as

he was later dismissed for two yellow cards after Welbeck had restored Arsenal’s advantage. Arsenal’s crisp passing had already caused United problems before they took the lead in the 25th minute. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was the creator with a weaving run along the edge of the area before finding Monreal, who beat David De Gea at the near post with composure. The lead lasted only four minutes, United replying with quality of their own as Di Maria’s perfect delivery dropped between Arsenal’s defenders to be met by the flying figure of Rooney, who directed a powerful header beyond Wojciech Szczesny. And it was in evidence again as Arsenal went back in front just after the hour. Antonio Valencia’s backpass sold De Gea short and Welbeck reacted quickly to nudge the loose ball around the keeper and roll it into the unguarded net. Welbeck received warm applause from large sections of United’s support when he was replaced by Olivier Giroud. There were some jeers mixed in but he clearly remains a popular figure at Old Trafford.
