Uhuru cancels USA trip over security snag in chosen route P resident Uhuru Kenyatta’s trip to the US was aborted last night after his flight was forced to turn back to Nairobi following “navigation challenges caused by heightened military activity in Yemen.” Mr Kenyatta had left the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi last evening for
Dubai, where he was expected to connect to Los Angeles, US via a commercial flight. But he never got to Dubai. “Following reports of increased military activity in Yemen, there was a challenge on the routing leading to a decision to turn back. The President touched the ground at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 11.42 pm,” State House
Spokesman Manoah Esipisu said, in a statement. President Kenyatta was on board his official Kenya Airforce aircraft, which was scheduled to pass over Yemen on its path to Dubai. “I left Nairobi last evening for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, where I was to connect to a commercial flight to Los Angeles.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Uhuru cancels US trip over security concerns From Page 1 Following reports of increased military activity in Yemen, there was a challenge on the routing leading to a decision to turn back. I touched ground at JKIA just before midnight,” President Kenyatta posted on his official Facebook page today. It is still not clear whether the week-long trip has been cancelled. Mr Kenyatta was expected to attend the 2015 Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles. The Milken Institute is non-profit,
economic think-tank whose scholars publish research papers and conduct annual conferences on global and regional economies, human capital, demographics and capital markets. This year’s conference, which will run from April 26 to 29, brings together intellectuals and world leaders to explore solutions to challenges in financial markets, industry, health, government and education. The conference aspires to increase global empowerment by advancing collaborative solutions in
capital, creation of employment and improved health through independent, data-driven research and innovative policy initiatives. At the conference, President Kenyatta was also expected to highlight Kenya’s position as one of the fastest growing economies and an attractive foreign investment destination. Increased partnerships and foreign investment are some of the key areas of interest to Kenya. The conference is meant to provide
a platform for networking and strengthening ties in various areas of cooperation. President Kenyatta seeks to attract private investment in the country’s booming infrastructure sector including telecommunication, energy, transport and other related infrastructure development areas. President Kenyatta was also scheduled to meet a host of leading American investors to discuss investment opportunities in Kenya.
He was also expected to address the investment climate in Kenya and expound on what the government is doing to enhance local economy, attract foreign business and capital in key growth-driven areas. With an estimated population of one million Kenyans living in the US, the conference was an opportunity to fortify Diaspora investment in Kenya and the overall vision of a broader cooperation in economic and social partnership in development.

Kenyans happiest in East Africa
Kenya is the happiest country in East Africa despite scoring a below average index of 4.419 in the latest poll on the world’s happiest countries. It is followed by Uganda with an index of 3.931 and Tanzania is third at 3.781. But East African nations are among the world’s least happy countries, with Rwanda and Burundi making up the bottom five in the survey of 158 nations. Togo is the saddest among those surveyed with an index of 2.839 followed by Burundi at 2.906. They are followed by Syria (3.006), Benin (3.34) and Rwanda (3.465). Switzerland topped the third annual World Happiness index produced by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), an initiative under the United Nations. The

land of clocks and chocolates had an index of 7.587 out of ten. It was closely followed by Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Canada. The World Happiness Report is aimed at influencing government policy. The study bases its rankings on data from the Gallup World Poll and takes into account variables such as real GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, corruption levels and social freedoms. “Increasingly happiness is considered a proper measure of social progress and goal of public policy,” the report said. “A rapidly increasing number of national and local governments are using happiness data and research in their search for policies that could enable people to live better lives”. The SDSN is comprised
of people from academia, government and the private sector and was first launched in 2012. Unstable Libya emerged as the happiest country in Africa with an index of 5.754 followed by Algeria with 5.605. Both were ranked 63 and 68 respectively. Kenya was 125 in the overall rankings. People who live in the happiest countries have longer life expectancies and more social support, experience more generosity, have more freedom to make life choices, have lower perceptions of corruption and have a higher gross domestic product per capita, the report shows. Finland, Netherlands, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia completed the top ten happiest nations on the list.
An imam held over the Garissa University killings says he was tortured after being arrested in Mandera. Lawyers representing Hamed Hassan Musral, a sheikh at the Mandera Islamic Centre, told the High Court that their client has been mistreated in the hands of police, and should be allowed bail “The background to our application is that the applicant was arrested in the evening of April 17, 2015 around 7.30 pm in Mandera Town within Mandera County and was thereafter detained at the military airstrip in Mandera and later picked up by unknown officers, blindfolded and thereafter sustained almost seventy two (72)
hours of torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in contravention of Article 29 of the Constitution,” the lawyers, led by Kioko Kilokumi, said. As such, they wanted the High Court to reverse an earlier order by a lower court to have him detained for 30 days as police continue with investigations. Lady Justice Grace Ngemye, however, declined to grant the orders sought. The Magistrates Court had on Tuesday given the DPP and the Anti-Terror Police Unit express orders to hold the cleric who is believed to have been involved in planning and financing of the attack, in which 148 people were killed early this month.
In his request before the judge, the Iman states that the high court can “in exercise of its revisionary jurisdiction” to reverse the order. The lawyers wanted the judge to declare that the magistrate “paid undue homage to the unbelievable depositions contained in the prosecution’s application ignoring completely the applicant’s depositions on torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment meted out to him by police officers.” “The magistrate instead relied entirely on the bare assertions and beliefs of police officers which were captured in affidavits bereft of any factual basis, reasons or grounds for their existence.” they added.
The journey to find Malaria vaccine still far from over Final clinical trials of a malaria vaccine - the first to reach this stage - suggest it could help protect millions of children against malaria. But tests on 16,000 children from seven African countries found that booster doses were of limited use and vaccines in young babies were not effective. After children aged 5-17 months were given three doses of the vaccine, the immunisation was only 46% effective. But experts say getting the vaccine this far is a scientific milestone. Data from the trial published in The Lancet showed that the
success rate fell to even lower levels in younger infants. Scientists have been working on the vaccine for more than 20 years, but observers believe there is still a long way to go. RTS,S/AS01 is the first malaria vaccine to reach advanced trials and show any sign of working in young children. There is currently no licensed vaccine against malaria anywhere in the world. With around 1,300 children dying in sub-Saharan Africa from malaria every day, scientists say they are delighted to have got to this stage in developing a vaccine against a
very clever parasite. Prof Brian Greenwood, study author and professor of clinical tropical medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said he was “a little disappointed” by the results of the clinical trials. “I hoped the vaccine would be more effective, but we were never going to end up with the success seen in measles vaccines with 97% efficacy.” The vaccinations took place at 11 sites across Burkina Faso, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania.
Do you think Governor Kidero and Senator Sonko are working harmoniously, as expected?
Cosmos Wambua
Felix Mwangi No. They are doing nothing, if you compare Nairobi now and before they took over, the situation has gotten much worse. The roads are bad, life is too expensive. Not to mention the health situation. It is deplorable!
Lillian Wanderi Yes. Because they usually consult on matters concerning Nairobi and we can see the changes. Take for instance the installation of traffic lights and CCTV cameras. This would not have been achieved had they not beeen working as a team.
Stephen Omondi No. Take the example of the round abouts; Kidero wanted them closed while Sonko wants them open. You can tell that they did not even bother discussing the issue yet they are the leaders in charge of the County.
No. There is no transparency between them; it is as if they are competing on who is the better leader yet one is Governor and the other is Senator. Even the accusations that they are facing at the moment tells you that there is something wrong in their offices.

Men are more competitive than women, US study claims Men are easily blinded by their need to win and will sometimes put all their focus into one activity as they are guided by their competitive rage. While sportswomen excel at gracefulness and agility, sportsmen have a stronger desire to win, regardless of their ability. Researchers have discovered that male athletes are more driven by the desire to beat the competition than female athletes. Sportswomen tend to be more committed to aspects of their lives outside sport, such as their academic studies, than their male counterparts, the researchers say. According to one Professor Robert Deaner, a psychologist at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, the study could be applied outside of the sports arena. His research could, for instance, be used as a guide to boost productivity in the workplace where employing both men and women could bring a variety of advantages. The Professor said they studied runners since it is a sport that is equally popular

among men and women. Regarding the study, he said: “we need to be careful not to assume that our running results will generalise to all sports or all domains outside of sports.” The results showed that even when men and women hold the same selective jobs, men are more likely to focus on competing for recognition and status, while women are more capable on other equally important things. The researchers assessed the competitiveness of 1,147 long distance runners competing in 5,000-metre events. They surveyed each runner’s motivation for participating, their training volume and their desire to compete at a professional level. Writing in a journal in which the work was published, the researchers noted: “Women did report greater commitment than men to their academic studies, suggesting a difference in priorities.” However, the researchers say that there are cases where women actually show greater competitive drive than most male athletes.
Stakeholders to discuss fate of up-country buses Stakeholders have called for a meeting next week to discuss the planned ejection of upcountry buses from accessing the CBD in a bid to reduce traffic congestion in Nairobi. County transport executive Mohammed Abdulahi says that they will meet the upcountry buses officials on Monday to strategise on the new plan expected to be implemented in a month’s time. “Within 30 days we want to have come up with a relocation plan for upcountry buses that come into the CBD.You realise right now there is a lot of congestion caused by all these public service vehicles coming in town,” he said.
Pedestrians biggest casualties as Nairobi leads in road deaths
RIGHT OF WAY: Pedestrians use a footbridge at GM, Mombasa Road in Nairobi which was built to minimise road accidents around the spot.
Latest statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicate that there were more pedestrian fatalities in road accidents over the last three months. According to the study in which the National Road Safety Trust is also involved, Nairobi accounts for close to 20 percent of all accident fatalities with almost all cases involving pedestrians. Speaking during the launch of a campaign dubbed ‘Save 1000 Lives’ NTSA Director General Francis Meja attributed the trend to the attitude demonstrated by both motorists and pedestrians who flout traffic laws with impunity. “The drivers… they have no respect for the pedestrians or the pedestrians themselves have little respect or no respect for motorists and when we arrest them, we charge them for obstructing motorists. Charging them for attempted suicide is not that farfetched if you survive,” he stated. He indicated that the programme targets boda boda riders to reduce the increasing road carnage. “At the end of the day, there is no reason why someone will attempt to cut a fig tree once, twice or thrice and when you
are being prevented from dying, you are literally advancing how you are going to die very fast. We have seen that on a daily basis, as we attempt to enforce the law, you have to really struggle and literally battle with people not to close the road,” he said. The Save 1,000 Lives campaign will see the private sector mobilised to create specialised programmes to support road safety initiatives. Statistics indicate that Kenya loses at least 3,000 people annually from road traffic accidents, with nearly half being pedestrians. Economically, it is estimated that the country loses Sh45billion excluding the actual loss of life as a result of road accidents. “The major cause of these accidents is speed and inadequate pedestrian facilities. With the support from the private sector, there can be quick results in reversing the trend by providing speed guns, providing safe crossings for pedestrians and continuous pedestrian education such as the case with Safaricom’s Traffic Marshals Programme on Waiyaki Way,” Meja stated. Empower women, counties told Counties have been told to empower women and youth economically and politically in order to reap the fruits of devolution. First Lady Margaret Kenyatta said that by empowering women, a community is empowered while by empowering the youth the future is secured. She was speaking while handing over the 23rd Beyond Zero Mobile clinic to Kajiado County where she congratulated the Maasai community for electing their first woman MP in Peris Tobiko of Kajiado East. She said the new measures undertaken by the Maasai will no doubt impact the community positively.
Jo’burg marches against xenophobia About 30,000 people have taken part in a march through South Africa’s main city Johannesburg, demanding an end to the recent wave of xenophobic attacks. Both locals and immigrants joined the protest with placards written “Africa Unite” and “Welcome foreigners”. Another anti-xenophobic protest also took place in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth. South Africa’s army was deployed to flashpoints earlier this week to prevent further attacks in the violence which has left at least eight immigrants killed.

House prices rise 2.75pc in first quarter of 2015 House prices in Kenya rose by 2.75 per cent during the first three months this year as opposed to 2.18 per cent same period last year. Although this increase is mild, it represents an upward trend - according to the Kenya Bankers Association Housing Price Index (KBA-HPI). KBA Director of Research and Policy, Jared Osoro said the increase in price was characterised by the softening of price movements for bungalows and maisonettes, with demand and supply dynamics pointing towards apartments which saw the highest price movements. Osoro noted that this was a reverse of last year whereby bungalows were the main drivers of price movements and prices maisonettes and apartments being stable.
Other factors that influenced the price of the houses include the size of the land that a house sits on, social amenities in the neighborhood, amenability of the house to re-development and security. “There is evidence that demand for houses on offer were influenced by the taste of the increasingly discerning households. Ease of access to social amenities and preference of gated communities speak to the search for convenience and security by home owners,” said Osoro. KBA launched the housing price index earlier this year to provide market players and policy makers with an improved analytical tool that is useful for tracking the housing sector based on locational and qualitative and quantitative characteristics that influence pricing.
US ice cream firm expands listeria-related recall Blue Bell, a US ice cream firm, has voluntarily expanded its recall of its products because of a bacterial contamination. The recall started last month after the deaths of three people in Kansas US after consuming Blue Bell ice cream. In a statement, Blue Bell said its ice cream, frozen yoghurt and other products could be contaminated with listeria. Listeria is a fatal bacteria found in soil, water and some animals such as poultry and cattle. It can be present in raw milk and foods made from raw milk. It can also be live in food processing plants and contaminate a variety of processed meats. It can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Tests were later conducted by the firm and it revealed that the bacterial infection had contaminated not just one of its factories but several. Blue Bell said it cannot say with certainty how the bacteria was introduced to the manufacturing line. “We’re committed to doing the 100 per cent right thing, and the best way to do that is to take all of our products off the market until we can be confident that they are all safe,” said Paul Kruse, the chief executive via a statement. He further added that the company would be introduce a new procedure called test and hold, in which all of its products will be tested first and held until the results indicate the products are safe.

A Kenyan will consume 16Kgs of sugar every year
Kenyans consume an average of 16 kilograms of sugar every year. This, of course, only accounts for packaged sugar and not the sugar found in other foods. In one of its latest surveys, the World Bank has found that each adult will spend roughly Sh1,084 on sugar every year or consume sugar worth that amount over the same period.“Sugar is one of the most widely consumed products in Kenya,” explain Jonathan Argent and Tania Begazo, who compiled the research. They say that it is, surprisingly perhaps, more frequently purchased than any other good reported in the last household survey Based on their numbers, at least 9 out of 10 households regularly consume sugar. In fact, the average annual household consumption of sugar is roughly 16.3kg per adult. It was also revealed that Kenyans will buy sugar, regardless of how costly it is.“Consumers do not typically adjust their consumption of sugar much in response to price changes,” says the duo, adding that people are “reluctant to adjust their consumption of sugar much in response to prices.”
DON’T EAT THAT: Blue Bell has expanded its recall which started last month after the deaths of three people in Kansas, US after consuming Blue Bell ice cream.
GLOBE WATCH Google Inc on Wednesday launched a new U.S. wireless cell phone service that switches between Wi-Fi and cellular networks to curb data use and keep phone bills low. The service, called Project Fi, will automatically switch between the two networks and more than 1 million open, free Wi-Fi spots, depending on which signal is strongest.
city wallet
This means that sugar is so important to consumers that they are “prepared to make sacrifices” by giving up other goods to maintain their daily intake. “As a consequence” say Argent and Begazo, “sugar prices are important for household welfare in Kenya and particularly that of the poor, who spent a larger fraction of their income on sugar.”
Of Google’s Project Fi, a new U.S. wireless phone service
The service will cost $20(Sh1,900) a month plus $10(Sh900) per gigabyte of data used. Customers will get money back for unused data. History Sundar Pichai, Google’s senior vice president of products, said at a Barcelona conference last month that the company was preparing to experiment with a mobile network, but that it did not intend to
disrupt the wireless industry. IMPLICATION If successful, however, Google’s service could pressure wireless providers to further lower prices and better adapt to the rise of tablets and wearable devices, Blau added. Though some carriers, such as T-Mobile and AT&T Inc, allow unused data to roll over, most mobile plans require customers to pay
for a set amount of data each month. But Google first has to “test out features they think are going to differentiate themselves,” Blau said, such as being able to transition from network connectivity to Wi-Fi. If Google is able to provide those features, “it’s very possible they could become a major wireless player in the future,” Blau said.

Survey reveals Athi River as most affordable place to buy property
PRO TIPS: Lamudi Kenya Managing Director Dan Karua. He advised aspiring property owners and developers to get the right location which matches with their budget in order to avoid losses. A Lamudi survey has revealed Karen and Athi River as the most expensive and cheapest places to buy property respectively.
A survey conducted by online property portal Lamudi Kenya has revealed Karen and Athi River as the most expensive and cheapest places to buy property respectively. Managing Director Lamudi Kenya, Dan Karua, advised aspiring property owners and developers to get the right location which matches with their budget in order to avoid losses. “The market is ripe for everyone to own a property, and with the increasing demand for homeownership it is a matter of considering which area is affordable to you while still meeting your property needs,” said Karua The survey revealed Karen as the most expensive location to buy houses due to the strict zoning regulations of the area which has ensured
that it appeals to buyers as a top tier luxury property destination. “Karen is very attractive to the expatriate population, top businesspeople and government officials. Security is not compromised as residents prioritize safety for their household and family,” said Karua. At the opposite end of the scale, Athi River has become the most sought after location for affordable houses. The former arid area has seen an increasing number of affordable residential houses sprouting up primarily because of the availability of land. “The high number of construction-related companies has facilitated in lowering of the cost of construction and led to improved infrastructure in the area,” he said.
BUSINESS wise Passion fruits open up global markets for farmers association 65 per cent of A group of forty farmers has found solace and market guarantee with passion farming due to the fruit’s demand swell, both locally and internationally. Ngethu village Farmers’ Association(NVFA) has become a highly respected enterprise that - with hard labour and considerable skill grows, harvests, grades and packs top quality produce for export. Through passion farming farmers have played a major role in attracting foreign investor who have wowed by their committee over years. Through its leader, the association says that the amount of fruit exported is only five per cent since neighbouring countries like Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda offer ready markets enhancing high demand in Europe. “We are learning all the things we need to do to become compliant and certified to the highest level, in order to supply European buyers,” says Association leader, Chege Dominic. Dominic say despite the fact that they have established market abroad, the latest major challenge they are facing is meeting European buyer specification. Experienced farmers like John Maina are often asked for advice. “It feels good to have achieved what we have. We’d like to share our experiences with others,” he says.
young Kenyans are financially illiterate
FRUITS OF PASSION: Mr. Richard Amdani tends to his passion fruit crop.
Young people are accustomed to instant gratification. A recent report by investment group, Old Mutual has found that the “Digital Generation” may need to recognise that financial success takes careful planning as well as patience. Last year, Old Mutual embarked on a Financial Education mission to empower Kenyans on managing their money. Numbers from their study, dubbed the Old Mutual Savings and Investment survey, revealed that one out of four Kenyans are extremely confident in making good savings and investment decisions. One out of ten is not confident while the rest (65 per cent) are averagely content with their investment choices.
This is evidence that majority of young Kenyans (adults in their teens and early 20s) are financially illiterate. “Financial literacy refers to the set of skills and knowledge that allows an individual to make informed and effective decisions with all of their financial resources” says a statement from Old Mutual. “Your first salary provides the chance to learn valuable lessons, such as creating a budget and spending less than you earn,” says the investment firm. Its experts urge young people to “build a saving habit. Understand credit and credit reports. A good credit history helps you get a car loan and a mortgage, but a bad one can ruin your borrowing chances for years.”

Nairobeez consist of three young men who want to bring a new sound to the industry. They have a passion for music and comedy.
Nairobeez
Who are Nairobeez? Nairobeez is made up of three lyrically talented geniuses, who knew each other since childhood as street urchins. They are also alumni of the Sauti Academy. The trio consists of Kissmart Bakra (good luck) Kajos Cheddas (money, pesa) Mose Donga a rich person). They say if you have Kissmart, you’ll get Cheddas and definitely you’ll become Donga! How and when did your group start? We came together after a concert that was organized by Nacada with an aim of sensitizing the community on drugs and substance abuse in 2009. The rest is history. Why the name Nairobeez? Nairobeez stands for Nairobi and ‘edutaining’. We entertain and educate through our music. How would you describe your sound? We call our sound Nyengese. It is a fusion of traditional music, comedy and a bit of urban Isukhuti. It is the new style of
‘zinazopendwa’ that will continue on. The name Nyengese came from a story we heard about a man who used to work in a hotel in Mlango Kubwa. People were not coming to the hotel for the food but to get entertained by Nyengese. Given that there are other established and upcoming bands, what uniqueness do you bring to the Kenyan music scene? Our Nyengese music is what makes us different. We are eccentric in the way we dress and perform on stage. Our fashion is a bit weird because we dress the way Nyengese used to dress. We also do this for our fans and the passion we have for the industry. Where do you draw inspiration for your music? We get inspiration from our day to day life, parents, nightmares and situations around us. Music inspiration is everywhere. Who do you look up to locally and internationally, in the music industry?
3
are the musical musketeers
We have none at the moment. We only look up to people who are focused and passionate to work with Nairobeez. What are some of the challenges you faced when starting out? Some of the big studios were not willing to work with us because we were not well known. Platforms to showcase our music were nonexistent. We also did not have money to record our music. Artistes you have worked with and would like to work with? We have worked with Saint P and Delvin Mudigi of Sauti Sol. We want to first know how our group is growing and sort our affairs before working with other artistes. What is next for Nairobeez? We want to grow to become a big brand in Kenya and Africa. We also want to be able to give back to the community by mentoring other up and coming artistes. This is because if we don’t help bring new artistes into the fold then we would have done all this for nothing.

n the face of all the present and planned shopping centres in the country, Jamia might not boast the most exclusive space. But it can boast as one of the country’s unique malls. The Jamia Mall sits right in the heart of the city. With the Jamia Mosque adjacent to it and landmarks such as the Nation Centre just a stone throw away, the mall’s location on Kigali Road is superior when it comes to convenience. The mall is a compact offering with individual shops taking up the bare minimum when it comes to a floor space that is lit by three unavailing skylights. The stores are quite close to each other and the hallways narrow, which translates to a lack of proper aeration. The first thing to note would be that the majority of the shops at Jamia Mall are separated into two categories—electronic shops and fashion retailers. Shops that fall outside these two brackets are few and far between. This in no way means that the shops are limited in variety. Most of the stores offer different products and services, and target different classes of shoppers. Today’s Fashion is an elegant shop that deals in women’s apparel with refined tastes in fabrics and colours. The store sells women’s bags, shoes and garments at the ground floor of Jamia Mall. It aims to attract the youth, and the young-at-heart with
its designs, while still maintaining a traditional feel. Hamdi & Hamida offers another experience altogether with its stock of scents, clothing and footwear. The shop is one of the few at mall that provides products for men, women and children. The merchandise gives an impression of Eastern sophistication, which gives shoppers a new take on fashion and formal wear. For gentlemen, the interestingly named Simwilliam is all about colour and cuts for shoppers with an eye on conventional masculinity. The shop stocks blazers, dress shirts and shoes to supplement any closet in addition to casual wear such as cargo shorts and polo shirts. Hair and beauty providers at the mall are also given space. For shoppers looking to spruce up their home Hamdi & Hamida Décor has beautiful glass and metal ware pieces that could give a house a unique upgrade. It is worth noting that the eatery options at Jamia Mall are extremely limited. Only Jamia Central Hotel offers respite to shoppers in the middle of a busy day. The hotel a truly one-of-a-kind restaurant with a la carte dining under a skylight. The mall does not have emergency exits and bearing in mind its location, obtaining parking is a feat for the strong-willed. But that notwithstanding, if you are looking to get quality electronics and clothing at affordable prices then Jamia Mall is the place to go.

The pair met at the Abu Dhabi airport. Not all fans were happy with others calling out the Nigerian singer, saying he should not come to Kenya again. But some fans were happy that the two met, with others asking if there was a collabo in the near future.

Two young women leave Africa for abroad in search of greener pastures. They want the ‘white picket fence, dog prancing around, smiling children and happy husband dream. They want the big jobs that gives them a big airy office with swivelling chairs. Sadly, when they arrive they find it is an entirely different ball game. GOVERNMENT CRACKDOWN ON CORRUPT LEADERS IS COMMENDABLE
The Government’s ongoing crackdown on corrupt leaders is commendable. However, if justice is to be served, these people must be punished for their crimes. We often hear of cases where authorities are bribed by wealthy politicians, who then proceed to walk free.

Wanyama denies saying Wenger wanted to sign him to Arsenal BIG VIC: Victor Wanyama celebrating after scoring for Southampton in a Premier League match. The Harambee Stars captain has taken to Twitter to deny reports he spoke to Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger about signing for the Gunners this summer
Harambee Stars captain and Southampton FC hardman, Victor Wanyama has taken to Twitter to deny reports he spoke to Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger about signing for the Gunners this summer. The Sh2 billion rated midfield dynamo hit the headlines Thursday and caused ripples of excitement on social media back at home when reports claimed Arsenal have been watching him and want to sign him at the end of the season. “I have to make it clear that I have not
said what has been brought up today am professional and will never say that. “To cut the story short have never spoken to Wenger,” the Stars captain wrote on his official Twitter account, @VictorWanyama to his 170,000 plus followers. “(Francis) Coquelin is doing a good job but Wanyama is one of the players Arsenal have been missing. Everyone has questioned the fragility of Arsenal especially in midfield in European
competition,” Sean Derry, a former EPL player said Former Arsenal striker, Francis Jeffers added: “Wanyama is big and strong, Arsenal have always been lightweight in midfield but now is not a good time with Coquelin in good form.” Wanyama who has scored thrice since joining the Saints would cost about £20million (Sh2,817,636,102) to sign, but with his powerful approach and ability to play in defence, he’d still be a bargain.
UEFA announces Champions League seedings change, premier league clubs are badly hit The English Premier League will have only one top-seeded club in next season’s Champions League after UEFA introduced new regulations. For the 2015-16 campaign, the eight top seeds will be the champions from Europe’s top seven leagues and the competition’s holders. The change in rules should lead to more of Europe’s major clubs meeting each other in the group stage. Previously teams were seeded by UEFA’s rankings, based on results in Europe. That meant Chelsea and Arsenal were both in pot one for the group-stage draw at the start of the season. But, as there is no Premier League side left in this year’s competition, only the English champions will be placed among the top seeds next season.
GAME CHANGED: A past Champions League draw. From next season, the champions from the top seven European leagues will go into Pot One alongside the competition’s holders.
Newcastle United fans plan second Mike Ashley protest on Saturday A section of Newcastle supporters are planning peaceful protests at Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct stores in the latest action against their club’s owner. Many fans have criticised the ambition of Ashley, after it was revealed the club had more than £34m in cash assets. Fans are also being asked to repeat last Sunday’s boycott against Tottenham on Saturday. “The boycott for the Spurs game was only the start,” a statement said. The Magpies last month announced record annual profits of £18.7m but spent nothing in January’s transfer window and have won just one of their last 10 matches. Fan-run website ashleyout. com said: “We have seen a vast
increase of awareness for Mike Ashley’s failed ownership of Newcastle United in the local and national media and amongst fans who were previously resigned to apathy. “These fans have now hopefully found a vehicle to express their
profound dissatisfaction with the situation the club finds itself in.” Ashley, who also owns almost 9% of Rangers, held “amicable” talks about his Ibrox shareholding on Wednesday with the new board of the Scottish Championship club.
Eden Hazard is behind Chelsea’s run - Zidane Midfielder Eden Hazard has played a big part in Chelsea’s dominance at the top of the Premier League this season, says Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane. The Belgian has scored 18 goals and assisted 10 this term for his side. Reports have suggested Real are interested in the 24-year-old who signed a new five-and-a-half-year deal at Stamford Bridge in February. “I enjoy everything he does on the pitch,” said former Real and France striker Zidane, 42. Hazard, Joined Chelsea in 2012 from Lille for £32m, is on a par with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real’s Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Zidane. He said: “There are players I keep an eye on and who I like a lot, like Messi and Ronaldo. “They’re fantastic players, but I like Hazard a lot too.” Hazard has been nominated for Sunday’s PFA Player of the Year award and scored the winner against Manchester United on Saturday
“I like the way he carries himself,” said Zidane. “That decisive streak in him and the fact that he’s improving every year. “He can still get better too, and I think he’s a big reason why Chelsea are top of the table.”

Kipsang, Kimetto to meet first time in London Marathon
BIG KAHUNA: Dennis Kimetto (pictured) will go head-tohead for the first time in Sunday’s London Marathon with Wilson Kipsang.
Kenyan athletes Wilson Kipsang and Dennis Kimetto will go headto-head for the first time in Sunday’s London Marathon. Former world record holder, Kipsang, broke the London course record last year clocking a time of 2:04:29. Kimetto, the current world record holder, is making his London Marathon debut this year. Kimetto, 31, was a relative latecomer to the sport, previously a farmer before his talent was spotted by fellow marathon runner Geoffrey Mutai. Since that point, the pair have regularly trained together. Kimetto made the fastest marathon debut in history in Berlin in 2012 - behind Mutai - the only one of the four marathons in which he’s competed that he’s not won. “My training is well and I am working towards taking a title,” said Kimetto, who has won the Berlin, Tokyo and Chicago marathons. Geoffrey Mutai who clocked 2:03:02 in Boston in 2011, Emmanuel Mutai who has won in London before (in 2011) and Eliud Kipchoge, who won Chicago last October are three other athletes likely to give the two favourites a run for their money.
Paula Radcliffe ‘unprepared but healthy’ for london marathon Three-time London Marathon winner Paula Radcliffe says she will enter this year’s race “unfit”, but healthy. The 41-year-old, who set a world record time of two hours 15 minutes and 25 seconds in London in 2003, has been struggling with injuries this year. Radcliffe, who has run the quickest three marathon times by a woman, is taking part in her final 26.2-mile race on Sunday, starting in the mass ranks. “At least now I feel like I’m going in healthy,” she said. “I’m going in unfit and unprepared for a
marathon, but I’m hoping my body can remember once it gets out there how it’s supposed to do it.” Throughout her career she has suffered from persistent foot and Achilles tendon injuries, with the latter proving a hindrance in her preparation for London. “It’s definitely looking a lot better now than even three weeks ago,” she said. “It was going really well. I went out in Kenya in February, I thought I was being really careful and not getting carried away, but I probably did start thinking about what times I might be able to run.
“The trails are pretty rocky out there and I tweaked my Achilles. I didn’t think it was that big a deal at first. It took about six weeks to settle down.” This year’s race will carry extra significance for Radcliffe, who said she almost cried when told she will be presented with the inaugural John Disley Lifetime Achievement award, named after the London Marathon founder. “The London marathon inspired me into running,” Radcliffe said. “I know I am not going to be competitive but to get the chance to take part in this race one more time is something that is really special.”
Nadal disappointed by his form in loss to Fognini Rafael Nadal admits he “played poorly” after his earliest defeat in 12 years at the Barcelona Open as he went down in straight sets to Fabio Fognini. The Italian, seeded 13th, won 6-4 7-6 (8-6) in the third round - Nadal’s worst result in Barcelona since 2003, when he was 16 years old. It was Fognini’s second straight win over the Spaniard, having won their Sao Paulo semi-final earlier this year. “I played poorly, I didn’t play like I should have,” Nadal said. “This is a blow for me, but I accept the challenge
and the negative day I had. There is no other way forward other than to accept it or die. “I will keep working. I am convinced that this situation of ups and downs I have had since returning from injuries, sooner or later, will come to an end.” Nadal, who has won the Barcelona Open eight times, has one title to his name since winning his 10th French Open last June. Fognini, 27, grabbed a tight opening set with the only break in game 10 and would not let Nadal settle into his rhythm in the second.
The Spaniard was making an uncharacteristic amount of errors on his forehand and was pegged back three times after breaking serve. “My forehand has been my biggest virtue,” Nadal said. “But my forehand was vulgar, it wasn’t a forehand worthy of my ranking and career.” Fognini levelled again at 5-5 thanks to a screaming forehand winner off a Nadal smash, and then forged into a 6-3 lead in the tie-break. Nadal battled back to level at 6-6 but could not contain the errors when Fognini earned a fourth chance, and the Italian clinched a memorable win.
Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson signs new five-year deal Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has signed a new five-year deal, worth £100,000-a-week. It ends months of talks between the parties, with the exSunderland player committed to the club until 2020. “There has been talk about it for a while now,” the 24-year-old told the club website. “It’s brilliant news for me to commit my future to this football club. I think, over the next few years, we can challenge and start winning trophies.” “We’ve improved massively over the last few years, and I think the next phase for us is to start challenging for titles and trophies as well,” added Henderson. Liverpool also tied down striker Daniel Sturridge and midfielder Philippe Coutinho to new deals earlier this season. Manager Brendan Rodgers said: “The owners are committed to creating a team that can grow, improve and ultimately win together.

SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2015
Crystal Palace’s season is as good as done and dusted but the defeat to West Brom last week would have come as a surprise to Alan Pardew’s side, considering the two sides’ forms. They face a Hull side that has been struggling for months. The Tigers haven’t been scoring much and aren’t exactly solid at the other end of the pitch either - that’s a huge problem. A win for the home side would really put the pressure on Steve Bruce. XSport: 2-0 Palace Sheila: 2-1 Hull Steve: 1-1 Game ID: R4559 Pick 1(C.Pala X (Draw) win)

The Magpies appeared to be focused on next season a few weeks back, but they have to be careful not to slip into the relegation spots come the end of this campaign, and that’s not a far cry either. The Geordie fans are trying to press the point home to owner Mike Ashley through match boycotts and protests, instead of getting behind their team. A thriller isn’t exactly on the cards for this one and it will all come down to which set of players want it more. XSport: 1-1 Sheila: 2-1 Swansea Steve: 1-0 Newcastle Game ID: N5859 Pick

Kenyan sports scribes humble parliamentarians Kenyan Sports Journalists Association Football team (SJAK) warmed up to the much hyped friendly encounter with their Ugandan counterparts USPA in Kampala next week with a convincing 5-1 win over Bunge FC on Thursday morning at the Nyayo National Stadium. Goals from Capital Fm’s duo of Christian Litunya and Solomon Okeyo, coupled by a brilliant header from Citizen Tv’s Mike Okinyi gave the journalists unassailable lead on their way to a debut victory over the law makers in over six matches. Ho. Ben Mutura had the consolation for the Parliamentarians. The east Africa scribes derby will coincide the annual Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa) awards set for next weekend. QPR had a week off last time out, and given the nature they lost their previous match against Chelsea, I think they’d have wanted to bounce straight back but they’ve had plenty of time to wonder what could have gone wrong. Everton are finally winning games again but something still does not look right at Goodison Park. The drama surrounding the penalty takers and some strange decisions on the pitch are putting Roberto Martinez in the spotlight and you have to wonder how safe his job really is. The fact that Chelsea have all but sealed the Premier League title with victory over United will have been a blow to Arsenal but to retain the FA Cup and finish runners-up in the League This is Wenger’s best chance at finally beating Jose Mourinho a draw is an expected reality XSport: 2-2 Sheila: 2-1 Arsenal Steve: 3-2 Chelsea

Mayweather-Pacquiao superfight tickets sell out in less than one minute Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s fight sold out within minutes after tickets immediately appeared on websites for as much as £94,000 (Sh13 million). Only 1,000 tickets were made available to the public for the fight on 2 May at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The remaining 15,500 seats will go to fighters, sponsors and promoters. The cheapest ticket for the bout cost £1,000 (Sh141,000), rising to about £5,000 (Sh706,000). The contest between the two has been set since February, but a ticket contract was only finalised this week.
Tickets officially went on sale on Thursday at 20:00 BST on the MGM Grand’s website and Ticketmaster. But within minutes they appeared on sites such as StubHub - an online marketplace owned by eBay - with the cheapest priced at £3,511 (Sh496,000). American Mayweather, 38, and Filipino Pacquiao, 36, are considered two of the best fighters of their generation and the bout, which has been in the pipeline for five years, is set to generate £162m (Sh23 billion). Mayweather has won all 47 of his fights, 26 by knockout, while Pacquiao has a record of 57 wins, five
losses and two draws. Meanwhile Mayweather’s unbeaten record is “a massive burden” but he will still beat Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas on 2 May, according to former undisputed world champion Joe Calzaghe. Calzaghe, 43, who retired with an undefeated record of 46-0 in 2008, says that record could affect him. “There will be a lot more pressure on Mayweather than there will be on Pacquiao,” he said. “Pacquiao has been beaten so he’ll be more relaxed than Mayweather. The ‘zero’ is a massive burden.”
Gor bread rakinG in Sh130,000 daily Days after officially launching Gor Bread, the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions are already making cash, collecting Sh130,000 daily according to club officials. Cash-strapped Gor entered a deal with Nakuru based Good Bread Kenya to manufacture K’Ogalo branded loaves and in following the Lord’s Prayer, the partnership is already giving the KPL leaders their daily bread. Gor are receiving Sh1 from every
loaf sold. The novel sponsorship deal in local football is pushing 130,000 pieces of bread since Monday’s launch by former Prime Minister and patron, Rt. Hon Raila Odinga. The the club stands to collect close to Sh4.8m monthly and a staggering by local standards, Sh57m per annum if shoppers continue digging in to Gor Bread at this rate. “This is the way to go and the selling is going up as we speak we are
getting Sh130, 000 per day so there is a possibility for the figures to rise up to Sh200, 000 a day. The company is set to spread its supply to Nairobi but at the moment it’s only available in Western Kenya and it’s doing very great. “We are still in talks with other potential sponsors but I can say we are heading on the right direction,” Ngala munched over the numbers as Gor found a sponsor since their deal with Tuzo Milk lapsed in 2013.
