olice officers yesterday confronted militants believed to be members of the Al-Shabaab terror group and foiled an attack at a village in Garissa

The terrorists were pointed out by members of the public at Yumbis village in Ijara constituency. “Security forces were swiftly mobilised and engaged the militants in gun battles. No

casualties were reported,” Interior Ministry Spokesman Mwenda Njoka said in a statement today. Unconfirmed reports say the militants were moving about in the village in two lorries

bearing Kenyan registration number plates with their flags hoisted on them. They were harassing villagers for food and water according to Inspector General Joseph Boinnet. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

NEWS FRIDAY, MAY 22, 2015

Police foil terror plot in Garissa From Page 1 “Security forces last night ambushed an Al Shabaab mob, found harassing locals for food & water in Yumbis, Ijara. Attempted incursion repulsed,” the IG posted on his twitter account today. The villages are said to have reported the presence of the armed militants to detectives at about 6pm last evening. “The government commends

members of the public for taking pro-active action to report the sighting of these militants and urges Kenyans to continue collaborating with security agents to ensure that members of this group who might have taken refuge among innocent locals are flushed out,” the Interior ministry added. Garissa is one of the counties bordering restless Somalia and on which a 6pm to 6am curfew was

extended early this week. Police are now appealing to the area residents to offer any information that may lead to whereabouts of the militants as they still pose a security threat. The incident occurred just two days after militants crossed into Kenya and prayed at a mosque in Ijara warning local preachers against exposing al-shabaab sympathisers. Only last month, terrorists stormed

Garissa University College and massacred 148 people, most of them students at the institution. The government is currently constructing a wall on the border with Somalia with porosity of the border being blamed on the infiltration of terrorists into the country. Al-Shabaab has claimed most of attacks in the region justifying them with the continued presence of

Kenya Defence Forces in Somalia. A total of 312 Kenyans were killed in terrorism-related attacks between 2013 and 2014, according to a police report. 173 of those victims were killed last year with Lamu and Mandera counties accounting for the biggest casualties with 67 and 64 deaths respectively. Another 779 people were left injured during those attacks.

ARCHAIC FIND: Archaeologist Sonia Harmand holds one of the 3.3 million year-old stones discovered in Turkana

World’s oldest stone tools found in Kenya Scientists have found the world’s oldest stone tools dating 3.3 million years ago in Kenya, in what has been described as “the most important discovery in the last 50 years.” They were unearthed from the shores of Lake Turkana and are 700,000 years older than any tools found before, even pre-dating the earliest humans in the Homo genus. The find, reported in Nature, suggests that more ancient species, such as Australopithecus afarensis or Kenyanthropus platyops, may have been more sophisticated than was thought. “They are significantly earlier than anything that has been found previously,” said Dr Nick Taylor, from the National Centre of Scientific Research (CNRS) in France and the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. “It’s really quite astonishing to think what separates the previous oldest site and this site is 700,000 years of time. It’s monumental.” The first tools from the site,

which is called Lomekwi 3, were discovered in 2011. They were spotted after researchers took a wrong turn as they walked through the hot, dry Kenyan landscape. By the end of 2012, a total of 149 tools had been found, and another field trip in 2014 has unearthed more still. They include sharp flakes of stone, sheared off from larger rocks, which were most likely used for cutting. Hammers and anvils were also excavated, some of which were huge in size. “The very largest one we have weighs 15kg, which is massive,” Dr Taylor said describing the findings as “game changing.” “On this piece, it doesn’t show the signs of actually having been flaked to produce other artefacts... rather, it was probably used as an anvil. Dating of the volcanic ash and minerals around the tools suggests that they are 3.3 million years old. Until this discovery, the oldest examples of this technology were

the Oldowan tools from Tanzania, which date to about 2.6 million years ago. The researchers say the 700,000year time difference reveals how manufacturing methods and use changed over time, growing more advanced. The scientists do not know who made the tools discovered in Kenya. Until now, some thought that Homo habilis - known as “handy man” - was the earliest of our ancestors in the Homo genus to use tools. But scientists now believe the 3.3-million-year-old implements were crafted by another, more primitive species. Dr Taylor said: “There are a number of possible candidates at present. There was a hominin called Kenyanthropus platyops, which has been found very close to where the Lomekwi 3 tools are being excavated. And that hominin was around at the time the tools were being made.

A former al-Qaeda operative was sentenced Friday to life in prison for his involvement in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam to close the last pending U.S. trial in the attacks that killed 224 people. The sentencing of Khalid Abdul Rahman Hamad al-Fawwaz, who prosecutors said was a close aide to al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, came in Manhattan federal court three months after he was convicted of conspiracy charges in the case. “I cannot find words to describe how very sad and sorry I am for the terrible tragedy and loss and pain and suffering it has caused,” al-Fawwaz, 53, said before his sentencing as he faced an audience that included family members of the victims of the bombings.

Al-Fawwaz, now 53, was accused of opening an al Qaeda media office in London in the 1990s and facilitating conversations among al Qaeda operatives ahead of the 1998 bombings. The United Kingdom extradited him to the United States in 2012. Attending Friday’s sentencing was Ellen Karas, an American who was blinded by the bombing at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, where she had been working that morning. Karas on Friday stood with a guide dog after the hearing and called the sentence wonderful. “Justice has been served,” she said. But she said she does not feel a sense of closure. “They don’t give me back my sight,” she said. “I don’t think it will be closed until I die.”

City traffic re-routed for Mater Heart Run Police will on Saturday May 23 redirect traffic in Nairobi, Mombasa, Machakos and Mumias on Saturday morning to accommodate the 11th edition of the Mater Heart Run. In Nairobi, the runners will start from the Nyayo Stadium at 7.30am and go up Uhuru Highway before turning up on Haile Selassie towards Nairobi Club and on to the City Mortuary roundabout where they will go down Mbagathi Road to T-Mall, and back to the Nyayo Stadium through the Madaraka

roundabout and Aerodrome road. Motorists coming from Langata road will therefore access the City Centre through Lusaka road, as will those coming from Mombasa road. Motorists seeking to access the City Centre from Ngong Road will do so through Valley Road while those seeking to access Ngong Road from the City Centre are advised to use the Nyayo House roundabout. The Upper Hill to Bunyala roundabout will be totally closed as will Aerodrome road, for the length of the run. Parking for the runners will be available at the Christian Foundation Fellowship Church at the Bunyala roundabout, the Moi Educational Centre, Nakumatt Mega and Toyota Kenya.

Humans gain ability to control computers with their minds People will soon be able to unlock their computers, and possibly their phones, with just their minds. Using a single thought, people will be able to “tell” their devices what to do. As crazy as it sounds, scientists have already created a system that is able to do this with 94 per cent accuracy. The technology could, in the near future, replace passwords altogether. It could also make accessing gadgets safer and much faster, researchers from the Spain-based Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language have said. Scientist, Blair Armstrong of the Basque Center came up with the system. In a recent study, published in a journal known as New Scientist, Armstrong discovered that differ-

ent people think about different words in their own unique way. He developed his technology around this concept, using brainwaves, which are electrical signals in the human brain, to test his theory. It worked 94 out of 100 times. While people use passwords, fingerprint scanners and lock-screen patterns on their devices, the human mind may be the safest method yet. Passwords can be hacked and fingers can be cut off but the brain is seemingly impenetrable. This kind of technology has been developed before, but the “noise” that accompanies measurements of the brain’s signals, has, in the past, made it difficult to study the data. Armstrong’s method has proven to be better and holds a lot of promise for the future of cyber-security.

city wallet 75 per cent of Kenyans don’t know how to make money using their phones Roughly one out of every four Kenyans has used their mobile phone to make money on several occasions. This means that 75 per cent of Kenyans with mobile phones are too ignorant, too preoccupied or too lazy to do the same. A significant number of people within the first group of tech savvy phone users have used their handset to get a job. Others have sold items using their devices on platforms such as OLX, while some have used theirs to offer professional services like teaching, hairdressing and medical consultations. A survey compiled by the World Bank has found that some Kenyans are adept at making extra cash through the use of their phones. “Of those who had earned money through their mobile phone, the majority did so by directly getting more work because they were more reachable,” said the report, which is a product of Research Solutions Africa and iHub Research. About half of the smarter phone uses have made less than Sh500 from a transaction while 8 per cent have made more than Sh5,000. The study found that in Kenya, there is a higher likelihood of technology usage by those educated past primary level. It discovered that more educated respondents have a higher likelihood of technology usage and are therefore more likely to turn their simple phone into a stepping stone to financial success and stability. On the other hand, most respondents without any formal education did not send text messages nor did they browse the Internet on their phone.

Chase Bank has launched a Sh10 billion bond in a bid to raise additional capital to strengthen its capital base. Bonds are debt investments, which are used by companies, municipalities, states and sovereign governments to raise money and finance a variety of projects and activities. The money raised from Chase Bank’s bond will boost their strategic initiatives, which include strengthening their SME lending base, agri-business lending base as well as their youth and women enterprise lending base among others. Chase Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Njaga said the move will aid in maintaining the bank’s pace of growth.

“The bond will also be used to finance expansion of the bank’s branch networks as we also invest in IT and product development initiatives,” he said. The bond will also see the enhancement of the bank’s digital platform, which will be aimed at improving customer experience with the lender. The bank has already launched its first tranche of the bond, which is expected to raise Sh3 billion. Investors will need to provide a minimum of Sh100,000 upon entry, and multiples worth a minimum of Sh100,000 thereafter. Investors will earn a 13.1 per cent interest over the bond’s seven year period.

Macdonald’s workers hold large wage protest outside HQ

marched towards the firm’s headquarters, The Guardian reports. History The company has been under pressure from workers to raise wages, just as investors have become increasingly unhappy with the firm’s slumping sales. Customers in the US, the company’s biggest market, have been increasingly foregoing McDonald’s and other fast-food restaurants in favour of so-called “fast casual” chains like Shake Shack and Chipotle.

That has caused the firm’s share price to sink. The company has been under pressure for over two years by the Fast for 15 campaign, a group of workers, backed by traditional labour unions, that has called on McDonald’s and others to raise the base amount it pays workers to a “living wage” of $15 (Sh1,450) per hour. The current minimum wage in the US is $7.25 (Sh700), but some states and cities have higher minimums. Implications

Though several other fast food franchises have raised their employee’s salaries, McDonald’s has, for the time being, dismissed the protestors. “McDonald’s and its more than 3,000 independent franchisees are standing strong and together in the face of this union attack,” the group said in a statement. However, the company has already said it plans to raise its workers wages to above $9 (Sh870) per hour.

Trans Nzoia farmers break into international maize markets Kimitu farmers group in Trans Nzoia County has lifted the fortunes of its over 468 members by increasing maize production. The group has also boosted their earnings by giving farmers access to competitive markets. It is currently targeting host farmers from other countries with the aim of identifying marketing opportunities within regional markets. Trans Nzoia County is among the largest maize-producing regions in the country pumping out an average of 180,000 to 270,000 tonnes per year. This is compared to an average national production level of 2.5 million tones, making the region a primary contributor to the nation’s food basket. Kimitu farmers group, which is one of the largest maize producers in the county, came together with a common goal. The farmers group traces its roots to 1990, when an informal community association was established in the Waitaluk area with the aim of enhancing development through the provision of improved education. The group brought together resources from villagers and

local authorities. With additional support from the Kenyan government, it established a community polytechnic and a school, providing both primary and secondary level education. In 2003 Kimitu Farmers Self Help Group was established as a formal, registered association with a primary focus on

ACCESS CELEBCHAT

commander in chief of the armed poets:

Brigeddia

Words are his armour and he is ready to go into battle. Brigeddia captivates his audience with his witty poetry.

W

ho is Brigeddia? I am a spoken word artiste. A humble Kenyan who does poetry to change society. Why the name Brigeddia? I am an ex-military reservist. I quit the military in 2012 and when I left I was working with ex-military who were brigadiers so people started referring to me as brigadier. I corrupted the name brigadier and here I am. The way you start and end your performances is quite different. Tell us about that. Generally, a salute is a sign of greeting. I start that way because it is a symbol of respect and greetings. So before I start I just want to let my audience know that I respect them .That is what sets me apart from everyone else. Why spoken word and how did you get into it? I started poetry in primary school. I just like theatre and drama. But I discovered it was too limiting because you had to perform a piece the way you have been given. I later found out spoken word gave me the opportunity to break the rules and express yourself the way you want. Years later, I used to sing and do a bit of poetry. One day while I had a gig at Laico Regency, I did a bit of spoken word in the middle of my performance to spice things up. Someone noticed and asked me to go for Churchill show auditions. I went and that was it. What about your music. I still haven’t given up on my music. It is still cooking and will be out

soon. I am working on something that is going to be different and new. I want to infuse poetry into African music and have something like an Afropoetry sound. Where do you get inspiration for your poems? I get inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. I also draw a lot from my life experiences. I can pick anything from what I see and hear and create a piece from that. What challenges did you face while starting out? I have struggled my way to where I am. Finances were a bit tight when I was starting out. It has taken time for people to notice my style of poetry. I had to be different to be remembered because if you do not stand out you will not be on people’s tongues. Where do you think the poetry scene is at in Kenya The poetry scene right now needs more platforms. We need more poetry on TV, we need a show for poetry like the way music and comedy has. People need to hear and see more poetry. There are also no poetry promoters in Kenya. If that was to change thing would be different and poetry would grow.

Where do you see yourself in five years? I think it is not about me. It is about the people, society. I can die tomorrow and my legacy will live on. I want to use my poetry to change society and make a difference.

T

he town of Ongata Rongai may be teasingly known as ‘diaspora’ for being far away from Nairobi, but it has not lagged behind in terms of infrastructure. This is evidenced by the Maasai Mall which is strategically placed at the entrance to the big town. The large scale mall which currently enjoys the monopoly of being the only mall in the area also boasts of being among the most prominent buildings in OngataRongai. It took the best architects, engineers, surveyors and contractors at least two years to put up the extensive mall which houses a variety of businesses tailored to satisfy all your shopping needs under one roof. Despite being from Nairobi town, Rongai is still a popular destination especially for nyama choma lovers who regularly drive out to the Kiserian area which is famous for its many cattle ranches. It is also an alternative route for campers and hikers headed out to the Ngong Hills. Rongai is also a major residential area with a good percentage of Nairobi residents renting or building houses in the town. This is an advantage for the Maasai Mall because it receives heavy human traffic on a daily basis. Normally, individuals drop by the mall to obtain supplies for their homes, for their camping and hiking escapades atThe Ngong Hills or for meetings at Kiserian meat joints. Visitors to the mall may also be individuals just taking a rest during road trips to and from the wider Kajiado area. If you love to shop until you drop, then one visit to Maasai Mall will leave you flat on the floor. Even before getting inside, the theme of the Maasai Mall is already in display with several vendors selling Maasai sandals, bags and shukas at the vast parking lot. The main entrance leads you straight to Uchumi Supermarket, an all item store that occupies close to 48% of the ground floor. Right next to Uchumi is the Bata Shoe Store for the footwear needs of men, women and even children. There are also

several boutiques within the establishment for the fashionistas, with Tru Collection and Danliz Fashion Boutique being the most outstanding outlets. The groundfloor and first floor are donned with banking halls belonging to mainstream banks in Kenya to ensure that you don’t run out of money to spend while at the mall. The banks at Maasai Mall include Chase Bank, I&M Bank, Credit Bank, Cooperative Bank, Housing Finance and Eco Bank. For social security payers, The NSSF Branch at Maasai Mall saves them the tedious journey to Upperhill, where they are guaranteed to find a snaking queue at the NSSF Headquarters. If you have troublesome kids who are likely to bother you during your shopping spree, do not worry as there are several kids’ hangout zones available on the second floor, with the kids’ favorite being Merry Planet Play Park and PlayStation Warlords. Here, your kids will be kept busy playing video games and modern PlayStation games.

The second floor also subsists in the constant aroma of delicacies prepared and savored in the many eateries concentrated in this floor. The most popular food joints at the Maasai Mall include; Sylma Restaurant, Sanguan of Puerto and Maasai Mall Taverno. If you love to pamper yourself, the beauty salons and Barber shops at the mall’s second floor, such as 9th Place, Toffet and In-Style Barber shops will help you treat yourself like the king/queen you really are. The highlight of the mall is the Platinum Bistro (formerly known as Titanium Lounge) which is a favorite raving spot for young students from the many universities around the Ongata Rongai town especially Multimedia University, Africa Nazarene University and Catholic University of East Africa. Being a fairly new establishment, we can expect more businesses to be set up within the mall in the coming months. The next time you visit Rongai, be sure to drop by the Maasai Mall for a fulfilling shopping experience.

Big companies Candy is not money exploiting Kenyans should be banned Kenya is a nation of forgetful people. We have allowed big companies like Safaricom, Nakumatt, KPLC, and Kenya Airways to trample on us and mint money from us. We take in their daylight thievery and all we do is make noise on social media, get an apology and move on. The other day it was noted that prices at the till are different from prices at the aisle at Nakumatt

supermarkets. A lot of noise was made on social media. Nakumatt put pout a statement saying they are sorry and ‘investigations are on going.’ Industry regulators are also not doing enough. They are here to protect the consumer but all they do is give useless warnings and fines.

The other day I went shopping. While at the till, my change back was supposed to be four shillings, the cashier without shame hands me over two sweets. I refused to take the sweets and insisted on my four shillings, which he eventually gave me. Since when was money exchanged for candy? These supermarkets are taking us for a ride. When you turn it against them and pay with the sweets, they

refuse to take it. But if you are giving it to me in the form of currency then why can’t I buy something with it? The supermarkets need to be warned and fined for exchanging money with candy. What is the Consumer watchdog doing? I thought we were past the coins shortage? I want my money, I do not want sweets which are bad for your teeth. . —Albert Chasimba, Karen

—Rose Karani, Muthaiga

A step in the right direction The appointment of Meru Governor, Peter Munya, as the chairman of the Council of Governors is a step towards the right direction as far as leadership in the country is concerned. I believe he will protect the constitution that we fought so hard for and ensure that the governors do their duties as they are supposed to. After Isaac Ruto, we need a sober mind as the chairman and one who is not easily intimidated and looks after the interest of the citizens first instead of his or fellow governors. He will uphold the law and hopefully in the 2017 elections, he will vie for a high position because he is a complete leader. —Peninah Mwende, Nairobi

Have all footbridges in Nairobi been converted to toilets? Footbridges were constructed to save those crossing the road from the menace of being hit by a speeding vehicle.

Well it has come to my notice that some are nowadays used as dynasties, which is not bad, but the question is if this life saving aisle

which is to most of us gets clouded, where do we go to? It is also pathetic that some people are using these havens as

Be courteous on the streets! It is at a time when you are late for work or appointment that you meet a group of people walking along the pathway. The annoying thing is when they are aligned from one side to the next walking slowly and pretending not to see you. You try to squeeze yourself to the little space you can get between them but this group of

fallers tends to give you an impression of owning the road; we are immovable! So let’s walk as civilised Kenyans that we are and definitely if someone wants to pass by please let us give way. —Jackson Asiligwa, Karen

washrooms where they make the footbridges smelly and impassable. It is time that we clean and have the right people ensuring that these

places are used for the purpose they were constructed for. —Evan Matano, Nairobi Umoja

Another scam The issue of land grabbing in our country will never end. The same MPs that have said that they will help the judiciary reclaim the land are the same ones who have grabbed the land. Now how will that be resolved? I think it will just be like usual investigations where a lot of promises are made when they

start and then they soon die down after a couple of days or weeks and nothing is resolved. Our leaders have decided to enrich themselves by any means possible. They do not care our well being, they are only looking after their own interests.

AllStars coach rues bad luck spell Nakuru AllStars’ head coach Peter Okidi said his side are not poor but rather luck has not been on their side even as they approach the first interval of the season. Speakin after their 1-1 draw with Bandari on Wednesday, Okidi said they are working to end their seven-match winless streak in coming days. “If you ask me, it’s not that we are playing badly but rather

lacking the important aspect of football which is luck,” he said. “Assessing how we have played, and the results at the end of the day has been two contrasting stories, hopefully that changes soon,” he added. In the Wednesday match, midfielder Anthony Kimani struck on the 82nd minute to rescue hosts Bandari, who were trailing 1-0.

COMPLAINANT: Eric Cantona says the New York Cosmos owes him Sh97m

Cantona sues Cosmos Eric Cantona is suing the New York Cosmos for $1m (Sh97m) in unpaid wages following his dismissal last year. The former Manchester United forward, 48, was sacked after he was arrested and cautioned for punching a photographer at a London pub last year. The Frenchman claims the New York football team did not pay him his $961,290 (Sh93.3m) salary. Cantona was hired as the director of soccer in 2011 as the club tried to secure an MLS franchise. A lawsuit - for the wages he claims are owed to him and 4% equity interest - has been filed at Manhattan federal court.

Cantona won four Premier League titles with United in the 1990s and his signing was the catalyst to the club’s success under Sir Alex Ferguson. He was banned for nine months for his infamous kung-fu kick against a fan during a game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in 1995. New York Cosmos were the glamour team in the United States in the 1970s after signing Brazilian striker Pele and West German defender Franz Beckenbauer. They folded in 1985 but reformed in 2011 and are currently in the North American Soccer League - the league a level below the MLS.

Kisero elected new Kisumu RFC chair

The Kisumu Rugby Football Club (KRFC) has elected Jack Kisero, a businessman as their new Chairman. Kisero was elected unopposed in elections that were held at the Railways Club in Kisumu. Upon his election, Kisero said that his target

is to lead the club back to top flight rugby in the country. Kisumu features in the nationwide league and are expected to gun for a return to the Kenya Cup in the coming season. “We want to make the club more

competitive to get back to Kenya Cup. We are going to put up new structure as well as banking on modern gym for our players,” Kisero said after the elections. Kisero now fills the position that fell vacant following the demise of Fidel

Odinga in early January 2015. Advocate Fredrick Maube and Gabriel Amolo, the CEO Ogra Foundation will continue to serve their two year tenure as Kisumu RFC Secretary General and Vice Chairman respectively.

Other officials are Wycliffe Okello (treasurer) and David Omondi (organizing Secretary) who are also serving their terms. The nomination of Louis Otieno Onyango, the Director at Microsoft 4Afrika was also ratified as the club’s patron.

Alonso slams F1 for Cricket Kenya working taking wrong turn to fix player disputes Fernando Alonso says rule changes planned for 2017 suggest Formula 1 has been going ‘in the wrong direction’. F1 bosses have agreed to look at re-introduction refueling and making the cars faster as part of major changes. “If they happen, we will get rules like seven or eight years ago,” said Alonso. “For the last four or five years we’ve been going in the wrong direction.” Alonso added that it has been a decade since he felt physically and mentally worn out at the end of a grand prix. “They were eight seconds quicker,” the 33-year-old said of the cars from his title-winning seasons with Renault in 2005 and 2006. “The engineers did some calculations. The winner of

WRONG TURN: Fernando Alonso says rule changes planned for 2017 suggest Formula 1 has been going ‘in the wrong direction’ for the last five years.

Malaysia this year would have been lapped six times by the winner of Malaysia in 2006. “So when you are eight seconds a lap quicker, that is very demanding physically and mentally and everything was pushed to the limit.” The McLaren driver said it was now crucial for modern F1 machinery to be made

faster. He said the cars’ lack of pace - in race conditions they are only slightly faster than their GP2 equivalents - had led to falling spectator numbers. “We cannot run one second quicker than GP2 cars because the grandstands are empty,” Alonso said. “It is a sign it was not going in the right direction.

Cricket Kenya boss Jackiejan Mohammed says she is working to ensure normalcy is resumed after it emerged players have downed tools in a new contractual dispute. Jan Mohammed says the timing is very wrong adding it’s likely to disrupt preparations for the ICC Twenty20 World Cup Qualifiers. “I have heard the cries of the players and I will therefore have chat with stakeholders to reach a working solution,” she said. “Asking for improved terms and longer contracts from Cricket Kenya is their right I can say. My only problem is the timing for all this,” she said. J a n Mohammed says there are plans to have the teams engage in several build-up matches to lift their game and overall status in World Cricket. “It is important that we lay a foundation for overall development of our game. We need that kind of programme so that more players get time to play even in the international

stages,” she said. The CK chairperson acknowledges that Kenya is in a tough Pool B in the ICC World Twenty20 qualifier to be hosted Ireland and Scotland from July 9-26 therefore need for adequate preparations. Kenya will be up against Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Netherlands, Scotland, Canada and Oman. Group A has co-hosts Ireland, Nepal, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, USA, Jersey and Namibia. Kenya’s first match will be against Canada on July 10 before facing Oman a day later. Other matches will be against Afghanistan on July 13, Scotland on July 14, UAE on July 15 and Netherlands on July 18. “Truth is our team did very well to qualify for ICC World Twenty20 qualifiers. It’s now upon us to ensure the team has the necessary support and we look forward to this momentous assignment,” she concluded. ALL IS WELL: Cricket veteran Zehra Jackiejan Mohammed who is the Cricket Kenya chair. She says that the board is working to iron out contractual disputes with players.

Russia, Qatar wrong for World Cup, says gay NBA star Russia and Qatar are not suitable World Cup hosts because of their laws on homosexuality, says Jason Collins, the first openly gay NBA basketball player. Russia, hosting the football tournament in 2018, has a ban on ‘gay propaganda’, while homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, picked for the 2022 edition. “I’m extremely disappointed in Fifa,” Collins, who retired in November,” said. He told players attending the events to “speak out” over the laws and culture. “If you’re a governing body like Fifa you cannot have sporting events in countries... where they have laws on the books that say that homosexuality is illegal, you just cannot give them that power,” Collins, 36, said. “So whether it’s Russia, whether it’s Qatar, you cannot give them the games, period, until they change their laws or the culture so that people feel comfortable again to live their authentic life.” While he said any decision to boycott the World Cup was up to each athlete, he hoped those who do attend might try to raise awareness.

Ibe, Flanagan re-sign Liverpool contracts Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe and defender Jon Flanagan have signed new deals with the club. Ibe, who broke into the Reds’ first team this season, has signed a new five-year contract with the club. “Liverpool are a great club and I like the philosophy here, I’m enjoying it,” the 19-year-old said. “Hopefully I can just keep doing well at the club.” Flanagan, 22, who has not played this season after suffering a knee injury, has signed a 12-month extension. Ibe was signed from Wycombe Wanderers as a 16-years –old after making his debut for the Chairboys aged just 15. And Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says Ibe, who had had loan spells at Birmingham City and Derby County, has a lot of potential. “He’s a great talent, a big talent here for the football club and I’m delighted that he has been able to sign and commit to the future of the club,” he said.

Empoli survived the drop this term thanks to a number of good performances and will hope to improve further next season. Sampdoria are on a fine run of form and even though they were beaten by a better Lazio side on Saturday evening remain

Genoa’s superb season continued as they came back from a goal down to win 1-4 in Atalanta and are very close to securing Europa League football. Once again a series of defensive blunders saw Inter lose out to eternal rivals Juventus and now need a

Milan vs Torino SUNDAY, MAY 24, 2015

MONDAY, MAY 25, 2015

What is already a hotly contested fixture between these local rivals, has an added incentive this year, as both teams from Rome go head to head for the last two remaining Champions League spots. Lazio have probably been the surprise package of the season climbing steadily up the table in 2015. Roma on the contrary have been shocking since the Christmas break, and despite a superb start, quickly fell behind runaway winners Juventus. XSport: 2-1 Lazio Lucy: 2-1 Roma Steve: 0-0 Game ID: 3949

apoli boss Rafael Benitez has emerged as a leading candidate to become the next Real Madrid manager. Current Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is widely expected to leave his post after this weekend’s final game of the season against Getafe. Talks between the parties are under way, with 55-year-old Benitez’s Napoli contract due to expire next month, although no agreement has been reached. West Ham have also made contact with the former Liverpool and Chelsea boss. Sam Allardyce, currently preparing West Ham for Sunday’s game at Newcastle, is set for talks about his

future early next week. Benitez began his coaching career at Real Madrid B and has also managed Valladolid, Osasuna, Extremadura, Tenerife, Valencia and Inter Milan. While at Liverpool, he famously led the side to victory in the 2005 Champions League final and also tasted success in the FA Cup and Uefa Super Cup. In a brief spell in charge of Chelsea in the 2012-13 season, he steered the Blues to victory in the Europa League. During his time in Italy with Napoli, he has won the Coppa Italia and led the club to the semi-finals of this season’s Europa League.
