N

ational Assembly Committee on Administration and National Security Chairman, Asman Kamama has defended his team over allegations of corruption following the rejection of Monica Juma as Secretary to the Cabinet.

Kamama said no member had been given any incentive to vote against Juma and asked those spreading such ‘rumours’ to stop. “I want to take this opportunity to deny completely that some people tried to influence the committee in one way or another, but anybody who has any complaint against any

member on any corrupt issues should forward them to the EACC. “I want to say that the committee is clean, and all MPs are also spotless on this. Nobody took any cent from anybody,” he said. While issuing a statement on the floor of the House, the Tiaty MP condemned the

Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution and Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria for misleading the public on the matter. The Kamama Committee vetted Dr Juma last week and recommended her rejection, which was subsequently adopted by the House. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

MPs defend Juma rejection, call for a new nominee From Page 1 At the same time, 15 lawmakers allied to the government now want President Uhuru Kenyatta to nominate another person as Secretary to the Cabinet. Led by Dagoretti MP, Dennis Waweru, the legislators dismissed the notion that they had rebelled against President Kenyatta, saying they were not apologetic for their decision as Parliament was not there to simply rubber-stamp the decision

of the Executive, but had a mind of its own. “When Parliament makes a decision, that is the end of it and we must stick with that decision; we are not apologetic about this,” Waweru declared. Kandara MP Alice Wahome, who is also a member of the Administration and National Security Committee, launched an onslaught against Juma, accusing her of ‘arrogance’ and

failing at being a team player. She also accused her of failing to use money allocated to her ministry. “You will be surprised to know that the operations wing of the Policing Services which is under her returned Sh2 billion to Treasury yet we don’t have equipment, we don’t have police vehicles and there is inadequate housing for police officers,” added Wahome. In what will raise eyebrows over

why MPs now seem to have valid reasons to reject Juma’s nomination, the Jubilee MPs raised integrity questions and dragged her spouse in the fiasco. Wahome claimed Juma had influenced the awarding of a Sh6 billion police insurance cover tender to a company affiliated with her husband and denying another worthy competitor who was providing better service.

“The tender was awarded to a company where the husband is a director. She cannot fool the world, this is telling about her character,” Wahome added. The husband, Prof Peter Kagwanja has since denied the claims. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

HALF OF CITY BUILDINGS FAULTY, AUDIT

UNSAFE STRUCTURES: The scene of a where a building collapsed in Roysambu earlier this year.

More than 50 percent of buildings in Nairobi are faulty, an audit on the safety of buildings in the city has revealed. Acting Lands Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i yesterday revealed that 52 percent of buildings already inspected have defects. Most, however, need minor adjustments while a few are write offs and will be demolished. The audit report, which is to be presented to the Cabinet next week, was prepared by the national Construction Authority. It has already covered 1,600 buildings in Huruma, Umoja, Zimmerman, Githurai, Kahawa West and Kariobangi. It has also recommended the demolition of buildings constructed on watersheds. Matiang’i said once the audit is submitted to the Cabinet, a plan of action against the illegal structures will be announced

and no one is to be spared in the planned demolitions. In the audit NCA has been conducting in the last three months, only 42 per cent of buildings were found to be safe to live in. “The President formed a Cabinet subcommittee for Lands and Housing, Interior and the Environment ministry after a building collapsed in Kisumu to curb this problem,” we will announce a plan of action,” Dr Matiang’i said. Owners of houses with minor defects have been given a month to fix the problems while those classified under high-risk have been given two months to bring them down and tenants vacated. Matiang’i said the government would not take any further risks. He was speaking at a forum on measures to curb collapse of buildings.

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua invites film makers to contest for County Award Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has called on movie makers to come and compete at the county’s movie festival (MachaFest) which he launched today. He said the Machakos County Government will support the movie industry among the youths in Kenya. “I want to tell the Kenya youth that there is so much money to be made in the entertainment industry, we are serious in film development, the opportunity is now,” he said.

Mutua also opposed the calls for a referendum to allocate more funds to the counties. He says it’s too early to subject the constitution to changes even before its gains are realized. “We need to give the Constitution time. The first term has not even ended and we are starting to fix it, I do not support the change the constitution campaign regardless of who is leading it, “He said. Speaking this morning

Mutua also defended himself against claims that his government has failed to pay contractor who worked for his county. He says there must be done an audit before they get their pay. He says after auditing all the contracts the county government found suppliers are still stealing through same old ways of delivering and then diverting the goods. On whether he will vie for presidency at some point, the celebrated governor says

he want to concentrate on working for the people of his county before indulging into national politics. “Someone said first chew and swallow what is in your mouth before taking another bite. Things will unfold as they should, “He said. He also said he is ready to be audited by the senate for accountability. He says all leaders need to align themselves with serving the people before politics.

Air pollution is deadlier than Aids and Malaria combined According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), it kills more people every year than Aids and Malaria combined. The organization says it is difficult to identify the world’s most polluted areas because many cities with high levels of air pollution do not have monitoring systems in place. Scientists say meeting global air quality guidelines could prevent 2.1 million deaths per year. The BBC reports that available data indicates air pollution is quite high in a number of Asian cities like Karachi, New Delhi, Kathmandu and Beijing. It is also common in Latin America and in developed African cities like Cairo. Even in developing countries like Kenya, industrialization is a major source of air pollution. Experts

have established that in low-income countries, harmful air particles also comes from burning charcoal, wood, crop waste and animal dung for cooking and heating. The WHO says action needs to be taken by national and international bodies to curb the ever-present threat of air pollution. Recent data from a team of WHO scientists has aided experts in developing a global model of how changes in outdoor air pollution could reduce health problems like heart attacks, strokes and lung cancer. The research, published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, is the first detailed analysis of its kind. The study determined that adopting air quality guidelines that ban unnecessary pollution could prevent up to 1.4 million premature deaths each year.

A notorious criminal who has been on a police wanted list has been killed. The man identified as Kamaa was shot dead last night by his accomplices in Dandora. Family of British terrorist want him buried in Kenya

The family of Thomas Evans, the British terrorist, who was killed by KDF soldiers in Lamu over the weekend, wants him to be buried in Kenya. His mother, Sally Evans has told ‘The Times’ that she doesn’t want his son ferried to Britain for burial. She says her son spoke to her late last year and insisted that he was not willing to go back to the UK. Sally says her son told her not to mourn should he die because he would be in paradise. Sally described the slain terrorists as a “little boy who had a bright future before he went down the path he went down.” “Even if I will never come back, it will make no sense to cry about me, I will be doing what I wanted to do. Rather be happy I will be in paradise,” the mother is quoted as saying. She said she would respect her son’s words and that taking his remains to the UK would be the last thing to do. “He never wanted to come back here, and wouldn’t force him to. I just have to accept what he wanted and what he always insisted. It’s the last thing I would do,” she said She however expressed relief that the son was no more because “his mission was to kill people”. Thomas, 25 was among the eleven al-Shabaab militias killed by KDF after they attacked a military base in Lamu over the weekend. He is from High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire in the UK.

cattle rustling and banditry. Ruto said that warriors from specific areas will be targeted in the NYS recruitment. He said similar programs targeting the youth in different parts of the country will be

rolled out soon. The leaders asked the government to fast track audit of the National Police Reservists (NPR) to remove bad elements especially those engaging in criminal activities. In response, Mr.

Ruto said the government will recruit, train and equip the reservists under the command of the national Police service starting with the most vulnerable areas. “We want to train them so that we can

take charge of what they are doing,” he said. He stated that the process of identification, recruitment and subsequent deployment will commence in the next one month. At the same time, the DP said government had given 60 days for registration of illegal arms in the hands of community members in hotspot areas. He warned that stern action will be taken against those found in possession of illegal firearms after the close of this period. “We will not take away the guns and disarm the communities but we must register the firearms. That is what we agreed as leaders,” he said. Baringo Senator Gideon Moi thanked government for the initiative to sensitise communities on peace and security. He said effort by government was bearing fruit by promoting cohesion amongst communities. “I want to thank you Deputy President for engaging us from day one. The previous meetings have been successful in pacifying com-

munities and stabilizing the North Rift region,” Moi said. Tiati MP Asmam Kamama expressed satisfaction with the results of the first phase of peace caravan and asked leaders to remain committed to promote cohesion and co-existence amongst communities. “Since we started this initiative, a general peaceful atmosphere in the North Rift is being witnessed although we still have a lot more to do,” he noted. Nominated senator Naisula Lesuuda while noting that efforts to stamp out insecurity and re-orient the North Rift are being taken, asked that measures to return children to school be undertaken urgently. “We should be keen that as we undertake these efforts, education takes centre stage,” she said. The meeting agreed that a second phase of peace caravan shall be held and asked the Government to support formation of joint peace committees that include religious and opinions leaders.

Ecobank signs deal for e-payments Ecobank has signed an agreement with MasterCard to take e-payment solutions to more than 32 sub-Saharan markets, thus tapping into the largely untapped cashless system on the continent. The counties that will benefit from the deal include Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, cape Verde, central African Republic (CAR) and equatorial Guinea among others. This has been launched in bid

to widen the acceptance and adoption of digital payments where the master card will issue debit, pre-paid and credit cards to millions of its customers across the continent over the next ten years. Customers will enjoy accessing their cash money worldwide and they shall be able to pay for products and services from more than two hundred countries. Moreover, Ecobank will roll out innovative master card acceptance solutions made to expand the number of merchant

location that accept master card payments across the continent. The Ecobank’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Albert Essien, the collaboration will enable the bank achieve its vision of contributing to the economic and financial integration and development of Africa by proving convenient, accessible and reliable financial products and services to its clients. “The initiative enables us to extend our MasterCard acquiring capabilities at thousands of merchants across

Africa, grow our e-commerce acquiring business, and expand our service offerings to retail and commercial customers in Africa,” Essien said. Michael Miebach, MasterCard’s Middle and East President said by collaborating with the largest bank by geographical reach across the continent, Ecobank payments will be safe secure and convenient. Other services to be launched include the roll out of thousands of mobile point of sale devices to retailers in selected countries

in Africa to allow merchants to process MasterCard payments. “The increased number of MasterCard acceptance locations in Africa means that more consumers and merchants can enjoy the additional protection from the risks and costs associated with cash. This is especially important in Africa, where more than 90 percent of transactions are still conducted in cash,” said Miebach.

ON FIRE: Indian social activists burn packets of Nestle’s Maggi instant noodles during a protest in Kolkata.

MAGGI NOODLES TO BE DESTROYED Multinational food and beverage company, Nestle, says it will destroy Maggi noodles worth more than $50million (Sh4.9 billion). This is following a ban imposed by India’s food safety regulator which led to the removal of the product from sale in the country. Tests conducted showed that Maggi noodles contained large

amounts of the heavy metal, lead accusing Nestle of failing to comply with food safety laws. However, the firm has insisted that the noodles are safe and is challenging the ban saying in a statement that the value of withdrawn noodles include stocks taken off the shelves and stocks stored in factories and with distributors.

JOB MARKET Kencall, East Africa’s first and largest international call centre, has announced that it will be recruiting Customer Service Executives. Based in Industrial Area, Nairobi, the firm has unveiled plans to hire a number of competent,

“There will be additional costs to take into account, for example bringing stock from the market, transporting the stock to the destruction points, destruction cost etc. The final figure will have to be confirmed at a later date,” Nestle said. India was not the only country to impose a ban on the noodles and take them

off shelves, several countries including Kenya also took the same precaution. The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Director, Mr John Abongs, issued a verbal recall of the products. Supermarkets around the country heeded the directive withdrawing the product off its shelves.

Central Bank of Kenya Governor nominee, Patrick Ngugi Njoroge says he will encourage commercial banks to change their business module following complaints by MPs claiming that lenders were exploiting Kenyans through high rates. The nominee said he will be looking to tightening interest rates to take the edge off the depreciating shilling and soften inflation. Njoroge told a parliamentary Committee on Finance that he will use his experience in the ministries of finance and planning to develop a positive monetary philosophy. “We cannot allow the interest rate to be driven in a way that is damaging

the economy,” said the candidate, who was nominated to the post by President Uhuru Kenyatta. “This is why we will need to go back to the commercial banks and one of the things that I would insist on is their innovation and giving them confidence that we can move on with market based solutions that are sensitive to their own profits but at the same time provides appropriate pricing for credit and also appropriate or higher interest rates for depositors,” he added. Njoroge said he would quit his post as the Advisor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Deputy MD once his nomination is approved.

farm business Farmers deploy wasps to fight harmful pests Wasps across the East African region are being used to fight pests in a new strategy that aims at reducing the use of harmful pesticides. Researchers at the international Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) have discovered 13 previously unknown wasp species in Kenya and Burundi, which will bolster the war on pests. The wasps attack pests by laying their eggs inside other insects. The eggs then mature into larvae, which destroy the host insect.

Local researchers discovered the useful predators with help from their peers at the University of Tuscia in Italy and the Tropical Entomology Research Institute. They said the discovery would go a long way in guiding the war on voracious pests since most of the wasps are parasitic and naturally capable of controlling agricultural pests. “Alongside bees and ants, wasps belong to the third largest order of insects, known more commonly

as membrane-winged insects,” explained Dr Robert Copeland, a scientist from ICIPE. The 13 discovered species belong to a moderately sized family of insects best known for feeding on insects that attack crops ranging from cereals, to horticultural produce. “Our studies suggest that many more species remain to be recorded in Kenya, particularly in the northern and eastern parts of the country where there has been little exploration,” notes Dr. Copeland.

Most of the newly discovered ones were collected from culturally important but threatened forests at the coast including the Kaya and Mijikenda forests. Others were discovered at Ungoye, a small forest near Lake Victoria. The discovery comes at a time when research institutions are coming up with potent and modern ways to fight plant pests and diseases, the biggest threat to crop production in Kenya. While most farmers have traditionally relied on conventional

pesticides to counter these pests, some insects have developed a resistance to the drugs. In the wake of the pest control frustration, biological control methods have been the saving grace. ICIPE has successfully used wasps in controlling some of the most voracious maize, cabbages and mango pests in the country. Wasps have already ben deployed to control the notorious Fruit fly, which affects more than four fifths of all Kenya mango harvests.

EVALUATION: President Uhuru Kenyatta inspecting JKIA’s international terminal last night upon his arrival from the 25th African Union Summit in South Africa. He directed the Kenya Airports Authority to improve the passenger handling capacity of the international arrivals terminal within the next two weeks.

Uhuru orders JKIA passenger handling capacity improved President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the Kenya Airports Authority to improve the passenger handling capacity of the international arrivals terminal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The president said this after touring the terminal on his arrival from South Africa where he attended the 25th AU summit and urged the KAA to put necessary measures in place that will increase its efficiency in the next two weeks. The presidents’ directives are as a result of the Global Entrepreneurship summit

that will be held in Nairobi come July 25-26th, which shall be attended by world leaders including U.S president Barack Obama. Acting Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia, Kenya Airports Authority Chairman David Kimaiyo and the Acting Managing Director of the Kenya Airports Authority, Yatich Kangugo took President Kenyatta on a tour of the facility. Immediately he disembarked from the plane, the head of state went straight to the international arrivals terminal together with First

Lady Margaret Kenyatta. Apart from the AU summit, the president also attended a Head of State Summit on Africa Peer Review (APR) Forum and was elected the chair of the forum to succeed Liberia’s Ellen Sirleef Johnson to steer the organization. To revitalise Africa’s selfassessment process for better governance, President Kenyatta has called for an extra ordinary summit of the APR forum within the year. The president also held bilateral meetings with president Silver Kirr and president of Somalia Hassan

Sheikh where they discussed the IGAD initiative to end conflict in South Sudan and contribution of troops to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISON) respectively. The First Lady Margaret Kenyatta attended a meeting of the Organization of African First Ladies against HIV / Aids (OAFLA) that focused on HIV/AIDS and women’s reproductive health. She also received a prestigious award on behalf of Mama Ngina who was recognized for the role she played for Kenya’s struggle for freedom from colonial rule.

Maasai Mara has been ranked eighth out of a list of the top 50 parks in Africa. An online survey of Africa’s best national reserves has placed Kenya’s Mara well within the top 10 best locales. The study, compiled by SafariBookings.com, has listed other Kenyan reserves in the top 50 list, including the Pejeta Conservancy, the Samburu National Reserve, Tsavo West, Amboseli, Tsavo East, the Lewa Conservancy, Meru National Park and Lake Nakuru. Tanzania’s Serengeti took first place with an impressive rating of 4.89 out of 5, followed by South Africa’s MalaMala Game Reserve, and Okavango Delta in Botswana. “Serengeti was rated best for its variety of wildlife, abundance of predators,

and spectacular wildebeest migration,” stated the report. The organization lauded South Africa for holding four of the top 10 spots. The report further reveals that the sheer variety of wildlife, abundance of predators and spectacular wildebeest migration are valid reasons why Tanzania’s Serengeti deserves its ranking. Kenya has almost 17 per cent of the top 50 parks, but only the Maasai Mara National Reserve is in the top 10. More than 1,400 specialised safari operators from Africa and western countries offer their safari tours on the Safari Bookings platform. SafariBookings.com conducted an analysis of 3,008 reviews to determine which park was best for African safaris.

CREDIT POINTER Faulu Insurance Premium Finance Faulu Microfinance, a fast-growing financial institution, has come up with a service that supports individuals and SMEs in paying their Insurance Premiums. The service, dubbed Insurance Premium Finance, offers loans worth between Sh 3,000 and Sh500,000.

Premiums refer to amounts of money to be paid in exchange for an insurance policy. It allows Faulu customers to access the product as long as they are registered under reputable Insurance companies. The service comes at a time when

Kenya’s insurance market is seeing unprecedented levels of growth and commitment to providing convenient and affordable customer service. Earlier this month, local insurers were encouraged to work towards raising awareness and eventually increasing insurance

penetration in Africa. During the 42nd Conference and General Assembly of Africa Insurance Organization (AIO), the largest insurance event in Africa, it was revealed that there is a need for new risk pools to respond to natural catastrophic instances of peril.

With that in mind, Faulu has come up with products tailored to catering to such risks. Processing Faulu’s insurance loan takes no more than 48 hours, subject to credit approvals. Loan disbursement is done in the form of a Cheque, which is written to the Insurance Company in question.

YOURSAY

Is it poverty or unequal distribution of recourses?

Why would anyone join extremist or terror group if not arbitrarily compelled to do so? Akin to this beligent rhetoric is the question, why would a young, intelligent and educated Kenyan become a robber or a gangster? If you say it is because of poverty, then you support Foreign Affairs CS, which to some watered-down sense is true right from the very testimonies of those who were once terrorists. Amina told an AU meeting in South Africa that poverty is one of the factors promoting terrorism in Africa. Yet someone may ask the minister the big question, is Kenya poor? Is Kenya poor than Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi or any other African country where cases of youths joining terror groups are less prevalent? The answer is a resounding NO. Hinduism philosophy tells us that poverty is not the decrease of one’s possession, but the increase of one’s greed. The simple fact of the matter, however is, in Kenya, it is not poverty per se, but the law of the jungle, where the strong subjugate the weak and survive lavishly at the expense of the weak. In Kenya, it is the phenomenon of unequal distribution of recourses; it is aristocrats against the miserable; the nobles against the humble. It is corruption, politicized and unrealistic policies and bad governance. — Phabian Paul Jr, Nairobi

Land grabbing menace Why are teachers getting out of hand Land grabbing cases are littered all over Kenyan courts and media stations. So far from all the cases that have stood out to draw public attention, it’s not exactly known who the culprits are or were. The only institution that can name and shame them is the government, but sadly the government makes up documents and names to shield guilty individuals. I am afraid we could be headed to a time when so much land will have been grabbed till the grabbers

will start grabbing their own grabbed parcels. Today the National Land Commission says it has received more than 385 reports of public schools’ land grabbing since January. Aggravating the situation, the commission further says that around five police stations in Nairobi have also had their land grabbed. Who will help us out, now that the government can’t? — Enock Ndayala, Nairobi

being treated like a bad smell? What is the reason for you being able to read this? Isn’t it teachers? In the first centuries of this era, teaching was much respected and was considered one of the most important occupations for humans. Now teachers are getting lower incomes and not enough funding for schools. The next generation should be one of our main focuses. Is it going to be successful with how the teachers are being treated right now? I’m afraid an ignorance-studded generation will inherit from us.

Our MPs are stark African govts have failed Pan-Africanism raving mad! The Pan-African movement was a noble cause. But it has since died a natural death at the altar of politics. It’s a dream that has been shattered by the very governments that should be protecting and promoting it. The same people that benefited from it before getting into government have failed it. The movement can hardly succeed operating under different national

chapters due to the lack of independence since it will always be dependent on governments, some of whom blamed for the suffering of their people. Suppose there was a PanAfrican movement chapter in Burundi working under the Foreign affairs ministry, of course it would also now be rooting for a third-term for the incumbent. —Victor M, Nairobi

The vetting of Dr Patrick Ngugi Njoroge (right) for the CBK governor position shows just how the priorities of our MPs are not about the economic welfare of the country. I do not see how his marital status his qualities of being a good CBK governor. In fact that is none of their business but the fact that they have made a big deal out of a small matter raises questions on what or rather who the MPs want to fill the slot. And besides isn’t there a policy that hinders the MPs from asking any private questions to the nominees? They should have asked him about the current interest rates, inflation and the economic status in the country but I guess that is not as important as him being single at 54. — Queen Munguti, Nairobi

Player exodus hits Ingwe Cash-Strapped AFC Leopards problems are far from over after a number of high profile players requested to be released from the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) side. Among the key players that want out are top scorer Jacob Keli and first choice keeper, Wycliffe Kasaya. The club’s assistant Secretary General, Prof. Asava Kadima, said the two players wrote to the club asking to be cut loose from their contract, which expire in December, adding that Ingwe are in discussion with KPL secretariat to facilitate their exit. “We have not released any player yet except Keli and Kasaya, who have written to us requesting to be released due to financial problems that the club is facing. They indicated they would like to look for other clubs which we have no problem. “We will have dialogue with those who want to leave and KPL to reach an agreement so that they can be released,” Kadima who among other elected National Executive Committee members rejected the newly constituted care-taker Committee declared. The don further denied reports captain, Martin Imbalambala has been allowed to join Football Kenya FederationPremier League side Nakumatt FC, throwing his future into confusion. He maintained Zradvko Logarusic who travelled home to Croatia was still their head coach despite his apparent farewell message to the Leopard’s faithful on Facebook. “We have not released Imbalambala, he is still our captain and we spoke to him and assured him we will take care of players’ welfare. Nakumatt have not approached us requesting his services, they have only called us on Kasaya whom they are interested. Ingwe are set to face minnows Ligi Ndogo in the GOtv Shield knockout this weekend and the squad unrest could leave them facing another dire situation akin to the Sofapaka game where they struggled to raise a squad. The club owes its staff up to fourmonth salary and bonus arrears, the Prof. Kadima revealed they intend to reduce the monthly wage bill from Sh2.6m to Sh1.8m. The Leopards, who have been struggling financially since shirt sponsor Mumias Sugar ended their partnership, will hold a fundraising event Tuesday at a Nairobi Hotel.

Sandro was not deported, QPR QPR have denied that their Brazilian midfielder Sandro has been deported after a report that he played all of last season without a work permit. The 26-year-old - reportedly signed for £10m - did not have the

necessary paperwork. A QPR statement said: “The club is in dialogue with the Home Office in a bid to resolve the matter.” Rangers said Sandro was currently on holiday in Brazil and had not been told to leave the UK.

Last month, the club said they were told of an issue with his UK residency visa and were advised not to select Sandro for their Premier League game at Manchester City. Sandro, who scored once in 17 appearances for the west London

side last season, missed the match at Etihad Stadium which saw Rangers relegated after a 6-0 defeat, and he did not play in their final two games. An Olympic silver medallist with Brazil at the London 2012 Olympics, he joined Rangers

from Tottenham in September 2014, having spent more than four years at White Hart Lane. He linked up again at Loftus Road with then Rangers manager Harry Redknapp, who signed him for Spurs from Internacional.

Birech training eyes on world title in Beijing African champion and Commonwealth Games 3000m steeplechase silver medallist Jairus Birech says his target is to win this year’s World championships in Beijing China. This comes after he continued his dominance in the water and hurdles event in Sunday’s Mohammed VI d’Athletisme IAAF World Challenge meeting in Rabat. Birech who had no one for company in the steeplechase after winning in 8:11.42, more than four seconds ahead of the challengers. Birech who is fresh from winning the Diamond League meeting in New York led 2004 Athens Olympics bronze medallist, Paul Kipsiele Koech (8:15.17) and Hillary Kipsang (8:16.01) to the podium sweep with Clement Kemboi (8:17.40) rounding the top four. “The field is very strong starting and Kenya has over the years produced the best athletes in the field, the primary target is to get to the team then prepare myself adequately for the top prize,”

Sally Pearson feared lower arm amputation after hurdles fall in Rome Olympic 100m hurdles champion Sally Pearson feared her left hand would have to be amputated after she fell at the Rome Diamond League event on 4 June. Pearson’s lower arm turned blue after her fall, which caused what doctors described as a “bone explosion”. The Australian, 28, had surgery on her left wrist in Italy but will miss August’s World Championships in Beijing as she requires another operation. “I was terrified seeing my hand going in a different direction,” she said. “I thought they would have to amputate.” Pearson, who won gold at London 2012 and added the Commonwealth title last year, fell after hitting the fifth hurdle of the race in Rome “I’ve never broken a bone, I’ve never had stitches or surgery before,” she said. “Doing all of that in one, in a different country, was very traumatic. “But I do put things into perspective and think I am very lucky with what happened. If it had been the ankle, it would be a completely different story.”

In other results, World Championship silver medallist, Silas Kiplagat was edged out in the men 1500m Race 2 by Morocco’s Yassine Bensghir with the clocks reading 3:34.29 against 3:34.84 in a frenetic finish with Timothy Cheruiyot (3:35.24) and Ronald Kwemoi (3:36.00) coming home to round the top four. The performance of the night was however, notched by fast-rising Ethiopian sensation, Almaz Ayana who blew away the field in the women 3000m including the 2011 double world champion, Cheruiyot. The Ethiopian crossed the line in a world-leading 8:22.22. Not only did she break the African all-comers’ record, her time was also an outdoor Ethiopian record. Cheruiyot finished more than 17 seconds behind, taking the runner-up spot in 8:39.75 with fellow Kenyan and former World Junior champion Irene Jelagat a close third in 8:39.99.

Uphill task for Simba as Tunisia date looms large

HERCULEAN: Humphrey Khayange of Kenya breaks with the ball to score the first try during the Rugby World Cup qualifying match between Kenya and Zimbabwe at the Mahamasina Stadium on July 6, 2014 in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

The national 15s teams have to beat Tunisia by a big margin to revive their chances of reclaiming the Africa Cup after beginning their campaign with a dispiriting 28-20 loss away to Zimbabwe in Harare over the weekend. The Zimbabwe Sables were once again a bridge too far for Simba who have been left with an herculean task of steamrolling Tunisia on June 28 in Nairobi with former head coach Michael’ Tank’ Otieno believing the Harare reverse dampened their bid to snatch the title from World Cup-bound Namibia. Subsequently, Simba dropped a place in the latest world rankings to settle at 30th with Zimbabwe sitting still on 26. The Sables were leading 14-0 after quarter of an hour before Jerome Paarwater charges stormed back through KCB RFC’s Darwin Mukizda who grounded a try and scored a penalty to level the clash 17-17 at the break. “The Africa Cup is very competitive and tight because it’s not played on home and away basis and losing to Zimbabwe has put us in a tight situation where we must beat Tunisia

by a big margin to ease pressure when we visit Namibia. The loss to Zimbabwe has messed our chances of reclaiming the title but one thing we must avoid is finishing fourth that will see us relegated to Division B,” Otieno, who coached KCB RFC to three back-to-back Kenya Cup titles. The Kenyatta University’s Black Blad head coach believes Kenya has a compact squad that if nurtured well will qualify for 2019 World Cup after Zimbabwe ended their dream of qualifying for this year’s edition last year. “If they can stretch Zimbabwe to 20 points then it’s not a bad squad. We can do even better in future tournaments,” Otieno added. Elsewhere, with defending champions Kenya ‘A’ heading to Kampala on Saturday with a three point first-leg lead in the Elgon Cup, Otieno was positive Mitch Ochola’s charges will retain the regional title. The Simba arrived in the country on Sunday and will resumed camp Tuesday to prepare for Tunisia.

Aguero rises to Argentina’s rescue Sergio Aguero scored a brilliant nearpost header as tournament favourites Argentina defeated defending champions Uruguay at the Copa America. The Manchester City striker converted Pablo Zabaleta’s cross after the break. Argentina were held by Paraguay in their opening game but now lead Group B after a deserved victory in a tense and, at times, bad-tempered game. However, Diego Rolan should have equalised for Uruguay but blazed over from eight yards. It also took a good block late on to keep out a header from Uruguay skipper Diego Godin, while Hull City’s Adel Hernandez had a side-foot effort brilliantly clawed out by Sergio Romero. It was a reminder to Argentina of the fragility of their lead but they managed to see the game out to claim the 82nd victory over their South American neighbours. Argentina now face the pointless Jamaica in their final group game

after the Caribbean side - invited guests playing for the first time at the tournament - lost 1-0 to Paraguay in their second group game. The only goal of that game came through Edgar Benitez after a terrible error from Jamaica goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr, who charged 25 yards from his goal but only succeeded in heading the ball into his opponent’s path. In La Serena, Argentina and Uruguay contested a tight and uncompromising contest, as might be expected between two fierce rivals meeting for the 178th time. Argentina - with Aguero, Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria in their starting XI - dominated possession and territory while Uruguay, looking to build on their opening win over Jamaica, were compact, stubborn and wily in defence. There were precious few openings during the first half, although Uruguay’s Rolan should have done better with a header that skimmed wide after his team showed the threat they posed on

the counter attack. There was a frustrated look to Argentina as they trooped off at the break, while coach Gerardo Martino had already been sent to the stands for arguing with the officials. But that changed 10 minutes after the restart with Aguero’s brilliant and brave near-post header under huge pressure from Jose Maria Gimenez The game opened up after that and became increasingly fractious, with an unnecessary lunge at the opposition goalkeeper from Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo sparking a penalty-box melee, while Egidio Arevalo Rios and Messi later briefly squared up. And although Uruguay did create chances to equalise, Argentina almost doubled their advantage when a low strike from Messi drew a good save from Fernando Muslera. It leaves Argentina with four points from two games, while Paraguay have four and Uruguay three ahead of their meeting on Saturday.

Warriors seal NBA title for the first time in 40 years The Golden State Warriors won their first NBA title in 40 years, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 105-97 to take the best-of-seven series 4-2. Stephen Curry and Andre Iguodala, the Most Valuable Player in the finals series, had 25 points apiece. LeBron James once again led the injury-

hit Cavaliers with a game-high 32 points. “This is something special. From the start of the season this is what we envisioned,” said Curry. The Warriors were the top-seeded team in the play-offs after having the best record in the regular season and they

become the first team since the Chicago Bulls in 1991 to win a title with no players having prior finals experience. Steve Kerr also becomes the first rookie coach to capture the crown since Pat Riley with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1982.

Javelin ace sets eyes on Beijing

C

ommonwealth champion Julius Yego believes his stunning African record of 91.39m will inspire him to become the first Kenyan to win a field medal at the IAAF World Championships when the biennial global showpiece rolls to Beijing in August. The YouTube man who improved his 2013 Personal Best (PB) of 85.4m in three successive meetings at Ostrava (86.88), Rome Golden Gala (87.71) before making the milestone achievement in Birmingham (91.39) will resume training for the Worlds in Nairobi as he seeks to improve on his throwing technique. The two-time African champion who finished fourth at his first Worlds in Moscow two years ago said being a world leader does not put him under pressure despite all focus being on him at the Beijing edition that runs between August 22 and 30. “Killing them before the World Championships

with a big throw is indication I’m physiologically ready. It will not be a surprise to see a Kenyan winning Javelin at the World Championships, after all, who expected me to throw over 91m in Birmingham? “I have more confidence than 2013, being a world leader is a big boost and encouragement heading to Beijing and I have to keep on walking. God willing, I might get better results than this,” 26-year-old, Yego who returned home Tuesday to a heroic red carpet reception declared. “My main aim is being in the medal bracket. I need to go back and train on the technique I used in Rome and Birmingham and if my legs will be in good shape during the final of World Championships, I will give it a go. Yego, who was received by his adoring wife Sincy and three-month old son, Jarvis Kiptoo, admitted throwing the best mark since 2006 only three days after bettering his PB twice, came as a surprise.

Chelsea will begin their Premier League title defence with a home game against Swansea on the weekend of 8-9 August. Manchester City, who finished eight points adrift of the Blues, travel to West Brom while Manchester United face Tottenham at Old Trafford. Arsenal host West Ham, Liverpool go to Stoke, Newcastle play Southampton

and Leicester welcome Sunderland. Promoted trio Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich face Aston Villa, Everton and Crystal Palace respectively. The top-flight season starts a week earlier than last season - on the same weekend as the Football League - as the 2016 European Championship starts on 10 June.
