Kenya faring quite well despite challenges, IMF A

team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has confirmed that the Kenyan economy will remain stable amidst challenges posed by terrorism and a declining tourism industry.

“Kenya’s gross international reserves, equivalent to $7.3bn (Sh700bn) as at end of May, remained adequate,” said a report by the team. The team attributed the increased expenditure between April and June to “enhanced efforts

to improve security conditions following the Garissa attack and budgetary support for the weakened tourism industry.” These factors are expected to carry over into the next financial year, which begins in July.

Uhuru’s gov’t not doing badly

From Page 1 The mission urged the Kenya government to boost efforts to mobilize domestic revenue and restrain current spending, so as to preserve room for critical priorities. Among these priorities was closing infrastructure gaps, supporting an orderly devolution process, and strengthening the social safety net.

The mission projected the GDP to grow by around 6.5% in 2015, supported by rising infrastructure investments, lower energy prices, and a dynamic private investment environment. “Inflation also remained within the government’s target range, declining to below 7% in May partly due to lower prices of some domestic food

crops,” said the report. The external current account deficit widened to about 10% of GDP in 2014, reflecting the strength of capital goods imports and a decline in tourism receipts owing to ongoing security concerns. The team, led by Mr. Mauro Mecagni, also noted that implementation of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR)

project is proceeding at a “fasterthan-envisaged pace”. In addition, the study confirmed that the Kenyan Government was fairing well in taming the weakening shilling. “Consistent with developments in international financial markets, as of end-May the Kenyan shilling depreciated against the US dollar

by 7.8%, but appreciated against the euro by 2.8% from the beginning of the year. “The CBK stepped up its monetary operations and has intervened in the foreign exchange market to mitigate heightened volatility of the shilling in recent weeks.”

3 more suspects arrested in connection with ivory shipment Three more suspects are in police custody after they were linked to the recent seizure of a consignment of ivory in Thailand that was shipped from the port of Mombasa. Eight other suspects are already being held by the police to help with the ongoing investigations being carried out by a multi-agency team which includes Interpol to unravel all those behind the consignment. National Police Service spokesperson George Kinoti on Thursday said investigations have also been extended to Singapore, Thailand and Tanzania to tighten the case against the culprits. “Those found guilty will face serious offences attracting imprisonment of up to 15 years and fine of Sh5 million or both,” he stated. He stated that a formal

charge has since been filed against the three main suspects accused of dealing with wildlife trophies and engaging in organised criminal activity contrary to the Constitution. Kinoti said already a warrant of arrest has been issued against other two suspects who are on the run. Three tonnes of elephant ivory were found at a Thai port in April stashed in a container shipped from Kenya. The discovery, which would be worth millions of dollars on the black market, was destined for Laos where the illegal ivory trade flourishes. Some 511 pieces of ivory, weighing over three tonnes, was found on April 25 in a container “marked as tea leaves transported from Mombasa, Kenya, and on to Laos”, Thai customs said in a statement.

GRISLY ACCIDENT: The ill-fated car.

Five die in Friday morning accident Five people were killed in an accident at Isinya, along the Nairobi-Namanga highway Friday morning. The 2 am accident occurred after the driver of a salon car rammed into a lorry. Both vehicles were travelling in the same direction and it

is believed that a judgement error by the driver of the illfated car led to the accident. “Preliminary findings show the driver misjudged as he overtook a lorry and crashed onto it while avoiding a head on collision. They all died on the spot,” Traffic commandant

Charlton Muriithi said. Muriithi also confirmed that the five occupants who were onboard, among them two women, died on the spot. The occupants of the saloon car are believed to have been land brokers, based on documents found in the car,

including title deeds. The driver is also suspected to have been drunk at the time of the accident as alcohol bottles were found in the scene, with a witness noting that the deceased group had been at a bar in Isinya earlier in the night.

Reggae is for rich folks, Hip Hop is for ‘sufferers’ The richest people in a given society will listen to Reggae music while their poorer counterparts will listen to genres like Hip Hop, Rap and Dubstep. A team of researchers has discovered that the kind of music a person listens to is somewhat related to their social and economic status. In almost any given society, a person’s social ranking may be linked to their taste in music. The experts discovered that genres like opera and classical music are still associated with wealthy individuals, but so are genres like Reggae, Rock and Pop music. The team of researchers, led by the University of British Columbia’s Professor Gerry Veenstra, found that

people who enjoyed Hip Hop and Rap were more likely to be poorer than those who didn’t. The study surveyed more than a thousand different people with different tastes in music and from varied backgrounds. Veenstra a sociologist based in Vancouver, said: “What upper class people like is disliked by the lower class, and vice versa.” The published study found that less-educated people from lowest classes tended to prefer rap, hip hop, disco, country music, gospel and heavy metal. Popular songs from years long since past or “Golden oldies” were also preferred by the lower classes but also found fans among some of the middle classes.

Some 175 people have died in a fire at a petrol station in Ghana’s capital, Accra, officials say. The fire on Wednesday night started as people in the city were trying to cope with two days of heavy rain, which has left many homeless and without power. President John Dramani Mahama has announced three days of national mourning to begin on Monday. It is thought that people were in the petrol station sheltering from the downpours when the fire broke out, our correspondent says. President Mahama visited the burnt-out petrol station and described the deaths as “catastrophic” and “almost unprecedented”. He vowed to take tough measures to stop people building on waterways, which appeared to have been a factor in the disaster. “I think that the time has come for us to remove houses out of water and the public should understand that it is necessary to save everybody else,” he said. Following an emergency the government says it will release £9m (Sh13.7 b) to help flood victims.

The Supplementary Appropriation Act, 2015 authorizes the release of the sum of Sh50. 464 billion from the Consolidated Fund for utilisation by the Government in fulfilling its financial obligations for the remaining part of the financial year that ends on June 30. The Act indicates the amount each ministry has been allocated for recurrent and development expenditure for the remaining period of the financial year. The Bills were presented to the President Thursday evening for his signature by National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi who was accompanied by the Clerk to the National Assembly Justin Bundi and the Solicitor General Njee Muturi. U.S. accuses China of biggest hack ever Chinese hackers are suspected of carrying out a “massive breach” affecting the data of millions of US government workers, officials said. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) confirmed on Thursday that almost four million current and past employees have been affected. The breach could potentially affect every federal agency, officials said. Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said it was thought to have originated in China. The Chinese embassy in Washington warned against “jumping to conclusions”. Embassy spokesman Zhu Haiquan told Reuters news agency that the accusations were “not responsible, and counterproductive”. Mrs Collins called the breach “yet another indication of a foreign power probing successfully and focusing on what appears to be data that would identify people with security clearances”.

Five suspects deny involvement in Garissa massacre Five men have been charged with orchestrating the attack by the armed group al-Shabab on Garissa University in April in which 148 people were killed. The accused pleaded not guilty to 152 counts of committing acts of terrorism in a Nairobi court on Thursday. The prosecution said that the five suspects colluded to carry out the attack, but have not said what their roles were. Prosecutor Daniel Karuri urged the court to deny the suspects bail. Magistrate Daniel Ochenja directed that they be imprisoned until June 11, when the court will determine whether they will be granted bail. The five suspects complained they were tortured for 10 consecutive days as anti-terrorism police tried to force confessions from them. The four Somalis and a Tanzanian claimed their heads were forced into buckets full of water, and that they were electrocuted and whipped after they denied involvement in the attack.

70 per cent of Kenyans financially supported by friends and relatives

Seven out of every 10 Kenyan households receive money from friends, relatives and well-wishers on a regular basis. A study dubbed the Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey (KIHBS) has revealed that millions of Kenyans are being financially supported by either their comrades or their kin. “A large portion of households in Kenya (70 per cent) received cash transfers,” states the research. Many households receive cash from friends, relatives or in-laws living abroad through money transfer services like Money Gram and Western Union. The research also indicates that others receive cash through local money transfer services like Airtel Money and M-Pesa. The Household Budget Survey was designed to collect data that would be used to update poverty, welfare and employment statistics in the country. It was designed to provide data on the socio-economic aspects of the Kenyan population such as education, health, energy, housing, water and sanitation. It found that roughly three quarters of Kenyan households in rural areas received cash transfers compared to about half of the households in urban areas. Transfers may range from as little as Sh5,000 to as much as Sh250,000, depending on the sender. The survey confirmed that North Eastern Province had the highest number of beneficiaries with 87.2 per cent of households receiving cash transfers. It was followed by 82.2 per cent of households in Eastern Province.

The White paper was unveiled just as Jumia held a press conference in partnership with Samsung, Microsoft Mobile Devices, Infinix, Tecno, Fly Mobile and Innjoo just days ago to mark the start of the Jumia Mobile Week, The ongoing event is set to be the biggest mobile phones sale in Kenya. Jumia is expecting to sell thousands of mobile devices of incumbent brands and new entrants at steep discounts. The White paper looks in detail at the evolution of the smartphone market in Kenya as well as consumer behaviours in relation to smartphone purchases. “Kenya is uniquely positioned with a young and growing middle-class generation eager for the next new smartphone with a strong value proposition in the market. There seems to be a shift from brand loyalty into value propositions of the phone,” the retailer said in a statement.

White papers are sales and marketing documents used to enlighten potential customers about particular products or services. The online retailer’s document was compiled with input and contributions from the world’s leading brands. From the research, it was revealed that Kenya now has more than 26 million internet users, making it the 21st most connected population in the world. “While feature phones still dominate, smartphones are catching up fast,” says the study. It revealed that this year alone, 58 per cent of all phones that were sold in the country were smartphones. This means that in 2015, 1.8 million smartphones have been

United Kingdom’s biggest grocery retailer, Tesco, is following in France’s footsteps of giving unsold food to charities. Earlier this month, the French national assembly voted unanimously to ban the throwing away or destroying unsold food and instead forced supermarkets to donate it to charities or for animal feed. Tesco said it threw away 55,400 tonnes of food last year, 30,000 tonnes of which was still edible. Bakery items, fruit and vegetables, sandwiches and salads make up most of its wastage. “No-one wants to throw away food which could otherwise be eaten,” said Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis, “we do not throw away much food in our own operations, but even the 1 per cent we do throw away amounts to 55,400 tonnes.”

African farmers stare at losses as El Nino wreaks havoc worldwide Farmers in Africa have been warned of major losses as adverse weather patterns linked to the El Nino phenomenon threatens their crops. African farmers, along with their East Asian counterparts, are expected to suffer major losses as the crisis ensues, scientists told a conference on climate change in the

German city of Bonn on Wednesday. The El Nino phenomenon is based on Pacific Ocean waters becoming unusually warm, altering global weather patterns. The last El Nino happened in between 2009 and 2010, Reuters reports. Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) scientists

say that i f left unchecked, the rise in temperatures due to human activity is expected to reduce Africa’s maize and bean production by up to 40 per cent by 2050. Sonja Vermeulen, a scientist from the University of Copenhagen, said that following the crisis, the rainy season has been delayed in several

African nations. She noted that it will be difficult to predict exactly how large the crop losses will be. Experts warn that Kenya will face substantial losses since the conditions will be most felt by bean, potato and maize farmers. Parts of China, Indonesia and India are also expected to be seriously

affected by El Nino this year, Oscar Rojas, a senior official at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in an interview on Monday. “We are monitoring for extreme droughts,” Rojas said, adding that it is not yet possible to estimate potential crop losses.

Mazda recalls 75,000 potentially deadly cars as faulty airbag crisis continues Mazda Motor Corp today filed a recall for 75,000 cars in Japan to replace air bag inflators made by Takata Corp, the company responsible for a series of vehicle accidents across parts of the globe. These new developments come after the Japanese supplier was ordered to expand a multi-millionvehicle recall in the United States, Reuters reports. About 38,000 vehicles had previously been called back for investigative purposes in December, a Mazda spokesman

said. Mazda’s latest move follows similar actions taken last week by Honda Motor Co and other automakers as part of an expanded recall by Takata to comply with demands from U.S. auto safety regulators. Takata is at the center of a global recall of tens of millions of cars for potentially deadly air bag inflators that could deploy with too much force. REDBONE

ow would you describe yourself? I am a 24 year old female DJ who is passionate about the art of turntables. I’m also a Journalism student at Multimedia University of Kenya. How and when did you start out in Deejaying? Immediately after high school in 2009, I went to Homeboyz Deejay. I officially started deejaying in 2010 when I joined Inferno VJs who taught me everything practical. I was the first female DJ to grace THE THRONE and the HOUSEPARTY (both radio shows on Homeboyz Radio) and was also the first female DJ to guest star on LIVE ON BLAST, a music TV show on KISS TV. I have also won the Best Female DJ award at the East Africa Pioneer DJ Convention two years in a row, 2012 and 2013. Why the name Redbone? I got the name Redbone from Ciara’s song ‘ Oh ‘. It was used to describe a certain type of woman in the Hip hop world. How has it been breaking into the industry considering you are a female DJ and there are not many female DJs in the industry? It has been a wonderful journey because when I started out, there weren’t many female DJs so I received a lot of support and encouragement from the male DJs. Gigs were not hard to come by because female DJs were on demand and we were few. What do you think of the Kenyan DJ industry and what do you think needs improvement? I appreciate that more and more people are starting to respect deejaying as a career and an art, not just as a hobby. However I think we should have more female deejays joining the industry because we are still too few. As Redbone, how do you ensure that you are

different from other female DJs? Some female deejays only think about perfecting their appearance, ignoring the skill part. I am a complete package. What or who inspires you? Positive feedback from my fans make me desire to be a better DJ. I also admire international DJ Lady Style. Her turntable skills are on another level! Which artistes have you worked with and which artistes would you like to work with? I have worked with Avril, King Kaka and FemiOne. I would love to work with Ali Kiba and Maroon 5! What has been your hardest time in your DJ career and why? I once spent a few hours in a cell. I had been mixing at a club in Lang’ata when the cops showed up. Police officers usually harass nightclubs due to loud music past certain hours. That was the longest night of my life. Highlights of your career? I played at 2 Face Idibia’s listening Party at the Carnivore with the Sheriffs and I got signed to Kaka Empire management in April this year. Where will DJ Redbone be in the next five years? I want to be internationally recognised as a top female DJ in Africa. I also want to start a DJ school in the near future. What advice would you give to ladies out there aspiring to be DJs? Get into the DJ industry for the right reasons and dare to be different. Always work hard and never lose your determination and inspiration. Lastly, always be professional.

How would you describe your fashion style? Eccentric, just like my character What goes on in selecting the different outfits for every show? I am more than a musician, I am a brand so what I am performing in has to represent the role I am playing on the day; either MDQ the boss or MDQ the musician. Who designs most of your show outfits or do you buy them from clothing stores? My stylist Robi Lugano handles most of it but my signature stage outfit at the moment, is the A- Line Skirt. What is the one fashion accessory that you must have while on stage? My hair is my must-have fashion accessory. It plays a huge role in my music. Speaking of your hair, your hairstyle, it is quite unique, does it also change depending on the show? Yes, but it mostly depends on the outfit I am wearing. Are there times you get it wrong, ever had a wardrobe malfunction while on stage? Oh yes, it is one of the worst things that can happen while you are on stage. Last year, at a Blankets and Wine event, the zip of my dress went down but Robi saved the day before it got more embarrassing! How often do you change your stage wardrobe? Anytime I get a chance to do it, I will go shopping. Do you change outfits during a show? I can change up to three times but it usually depends on the show and location.

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 The forecast today is stormy. You may have sensed that there was some tension clouding the conversation at home. Resentments were left unsaid and subtle power games were played without resolution. Today, Taurus, it all becomes too unbearable for you. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 You’re liable to feel dejected if you receive a lackluster response from the world. Apparently, Gemini, your performance has lost some of its ability to captivate an audience. Whether you accept this or try to shine up your act is the question of the day! CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 If you were an Olympic athlete, today you’d be standing at the starting line, wondering if you had trained enough for a topnotch performance. Have you had enough practice? Will you make the grade? Issues related to your material resources will certainly be on the agenda. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 A planetary configuration like today’s often makes people afraid to start anything that challenges the status quo. This is true for you in your professional life. MPs should be rotated annually Disintegrate Fat cop crackdown: Overweight policemen based on their competence of the English need to be checked language? According to new statistics released by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, 8 out of every 10 police officers in the world are overweight. The new study highlights a widespread problem in police departments across the world. According to some researchers, law enforcement officers are actually 25 times more likely to die from weight related cardiovascular disease than on duty injuries. The situation in our republic could be worse than in

any other nation. We see overweight policemen every day and that begs the question if such officers are fit enough to serve and protect well. Not only are a vast number of police officers overweight, but they are also significantly less intelligent than the average person as well. That’s dreadful. The government should introduce fitness exams to our diligent officers so as to help improve service. — Victor Olang, Westlands

Who gave MPs the right to approve the country’s budget? Don’t get me wrong; I understand how the pillars of government function but in all honesty, not every Member of Parliament is an economist. And those who happen to be economists are not that good. So I ask; which insolent, impudent, incorrigible idiot thought it best to put these fools in charge? In my opinion, we should have a rotating government like in Switzerland. The country operates like a well oiled machine and runs like the the famous Swiss watches the country exports. I know that our future Presidents won’t stand for a rotating government but maybe

they will sit for a rotating Parliament/ In Switzerland, the country is run by a “panel of experts”, competent individuals who make life better for their people. The duty of their Head of State rotates among the members in order of seniority and the previous year’s Vice President becomes President. In Kenya, we are governed by a pack of greedy hogs. Our President can be competent but those under him could be the rotten apples that spoil the bunch. I hope the government will consider adopting a more effective model of governance before they doom us all to a life of squalor. —Dennis Onderi, Kawangware

New cities move The world of Internet is was long overdue the new responsibility It is about time the government remembered the marginalised areas in the country. I am highly elated by the government’s plans to build resort cities in Isiolo, Turkana and Lamu. I believe that these areas will see a lot of infrastructural development starting with the much needed roads that will be constructed in order to provide access to these areas by tourists. I am also sure that opening up of these areas will bring an end to the cattle rustling era which has brought death and destruction to the residents of these town, pushing them further backwards economic wise. We can only hope that the projects will not be stalled by corruption and misappropriation of funds. —Mercy Bosire, KIMC

Welcome to a world where the world of internet has taken up the role of physical association. We are in this error that if your phone can not connect you to the internet or the social sites you are considered weird and from the moon. People are constantly online checking their phone in case someone had posted something while they were away or asleep for that matter. It has become a new way of meeting friends, checking on families and for some a dating site all in the name of being digital. But who are we kidding? As much as it is impacting our lives positively it is also affecting us negatively. Unless you are the owner of the so called social sites well good for you because you are making a fortune out of this person whose work is to sleep and be online 24/7/365. Some have even forget what it means to live, we no longer associate physically, we no longer attend family meetings neither do we offer our complete attention to those around us, all in the name of updating status. —Faridah Kariuki, Nairobi

At this era or should I say error of smartphones and autocorrect, I do not expect people to have any trouble spelling correctly. Just when a quotation became a quote, or an invitation an invite. Why also can’t people figure out the difference between German and Germany? Kenyans should also note that the word [alot] does not exist, if they want to mean [a lot]. — Onyango Onyango, UoN

Ruto’s confession was a show of honesty Politicians and all Kenyans in general should learn from Deputy President’s brave step of confessing to owning shares in Weston Hotel on Tuesday. As long as you conduct your affairs in a transparent manner, then people aiming to tarnish your reputation will never succeed since you will always have a response to their allegations. I believe that the DP wouldn’t have made the confession if he had shady dealings in the hotel or was involved in the Lang’ata Primary School land grabbing saga. I also differ with those viewing his move as a Public Relations stunt. In my opinion, he is just an honest leader with many opponents. — Cindy Nyambura, Nairobi

KPL first leg finale WEEKEND EDITION, JUNE 5-7, 2015

Going into the final week of the first leg of the Kenyan Premier league two-time back to back champions Gor Mahia are still undefeated. They sit at the log summit with 36 points. The chasing group that is Sofapaka (27 points) and Ulinzi (24 points) will be trying to ensure Gor don’t go out of sight to maintain their slim hopes of catching up. At the bottom of the log, Nakuru All Stars and their relegation peers Nairobi City Stars appear to be hurtling down towards relegation for sure. X Sports takes a quick sneak peek as the KPL first leg concludes this weekend. Gor Mahia vs Tusker (Kisumu Stadium) 14 teams have tried to topple the champions; all have failed. Last Monday Thika United became the 14th team to be at Gor’s receiving end. The reigning champions sit at the top with 36 points, unbeaten and unshaken (at least not yet). On Saturday it will be Tusker FC’s turn to test and taste the inform champions, a side that succeeded them as champions two years ago. Under the stewardship of Francis Kimanzi the brewers have not had a memorable season. Their worst start to the season was made better last week after their 2-0 win over Sony Sugar. With 22 points from 14 matches, Tusker will need have to break some sweat if they are to hand Gor Mahia their first defeat of the season.

Batoto Ba Mungu are rolling on good form, having lost only once this season.

Gor will be relying on the services of the inform tusker outcasts, Ali Abondo – who is the league’s top scorer with nine goals and custodian Boniface Oluoch who has nine clean sheets to his name. Western Stima vs Ushuru (Kisumu Stadium) Fresh from a barren draw with Chemelil Sugar at the Afraha stadium last weekend, fourth placed Western Stima will host Ushuru targeting maximum points as they seek to end the first leg of the season on a high. Ushuru on the other hand fired blanks when they hosted Bandari at the City stadium. The taxmen sit eighth in the

table with 20 points. Muhoroni Youth vs Chemelil (Muhoroni) Muhoroni Youth appear to be on a free fall towards relegation, having amassed a bunch of dreadful results so far. Last weekend’s hapless show saw them concede three against KCB. Against Chemelil Sugar another side performing dismally, Muhoroni will be in dire need of some points. Placed 13th with just 11 points Muhoroni will easily turn out to be relegation candidates if the two teams below them were start winning. All Stars Vs Mathare (Afraha Stadium)

MATCH OF THE DAY: In form Gor Mahia are looking to get a good sip of the shaky brewers.

Against AFC Leopards, Mathare United scored one the best teamwork goal in the first leg of the season with Wyvonne Isuza getting at the end of the build-up with a lovely finish. Mathare will be aggrieved after settling for a 1-1 draw with the Leopards having dominated the encounter. They travel to Afraha Stadium where they will face bottom of the table Nakuru All Stars, who have just six points after sharing the spoils with Nairobi City Stars last weekend. Sony Sugar vs City Stars (Awendo) Last weekend Zedekiah Zico Otieno suffered his seventh defeat of the season against Tusker to further put his job in jeopardy. Zico, more than anything needs a convincing win to at least keep his job. With just 15 points from 14 games, Zico’s job is certainly on the line. Hosting Nairobi City Stars a team busy grinding points won’t be an easy task for Zico and his lads. Bandari vs Thika United (Mbaraki) Both teams that failed to secure wins in last weekends fixtures. They clash at the Mbaraki stadium with the host team Bandari being under more pressure to win the match. The Twahir Muhiddin side has lost five times this season, gathering only 17 points. Bandari will need to do better than they did on Monday during their barren draw with Ushuru when they face stun test against hard fighting

AFC Leopards against Sofapaka in a previous encounter.

Thika who lost 2-0 to Gor Mahia. Ulinzi vs KCB (Afraha) At the Afraha Stadium, Robert Matano’s side Ulinzi Stars who lost 1-2 to Sofapaka will host KCB who convincingly beat Muhoroni Youth 3-0 last weekend. The soldiers might have been in third position, but fair to say they’ve been far from convincing if they were to repeat their title wining exploits from 2010. The side need to first work on consistency of results in matches. KCB on the other hand have indeed improved. They certainly don’t look like the team that started the season 13th placed. They are on an

upward trend. AFC Leopards Vs Sofapaka (Nyayo) This will definitely be one of the clashes to watch out for this weekend. Zdravko Logarusic’s side played better in the second half against Mathare majorly due to the tactical expertise of the Croat. Batoto Ba Mungu on the other hand are rolling on good form, having lost only once this season. They dispatched Ulinzi Stars last week and are the only other side to have prevented Gor Mahia from scoring the other being Western Stima. To beat them, Ingwe have some work to do.

Kenya ‘A’ coach upbeat ahead of Elgon cup Kenya “A” Team Manager Newton Ongalo is confident that his side is capable of putting up a good showing as they embark on their Elgon Cup defence in a two-legged fixture against Uganda’s Rugby Cranes on 13th June in Nairobi with the return leg in Kampala a week later. A 30-man squad has been in nonresidential training over the past two weeks in readiness for the fixture. Only seven players namely Edwins Makori, Philip Kwame, Rocky Aguko, Eden Agero, Ken Moseti, Elkins Musonye and Felix Wanjala remain from the team that won last year’s edition 48-21 on aggregate, having lost the opening leg 14-21 in Kampala before shutting out the Ugandans 34-0 in the return match in Nairobi. Jo Pavey says athletes should ditch Mo Farah’s coach Salazar European 10,000m champion Jo Pavey says she would ditch Alberto Salazar as her coach if she were Mo Farah. A double Olympic champion, Farah is trained by Salazar, who is at the centre of doping allegations. Salazar denies wrongdoing but Pavey says she would “run a mile” if she was in Farah’s position. “As an athlete, you don’t want to associate yourself with people that have got accusations and allegations against them,” said the Englishwoman. “I’m not here to accuse anyone, but if there was anybody I was slightly associated with that I suddenly realised had these accusations against them - or any of my training partners - I’d run a mile.” There is no suggestion that Farah, who is part of Salazar’s training operation in the United States, has broken any rules. The Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m gold medallist said: “I have not taken any banned substances and Alberto has never suggested that I take a banned substance. “From my experience, Alberto and the Oregon Project have always strictly followed Wada rules and if there is ever a question seek guidance from Usada to ensure they are correctly interpreting Wada’s rules.” The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) says it may investigate Salazar over allegations he doped American runner Galen Rupp in 2002. Rupp, who is also part of the Nike Oregon Project (NOP) and was 16 at the time of the alleged incident, denies any wrongdoing.

Kenya drops in latest Fifa rankings, Nyamweya stays put Kenya has dropped six places down from position 117 to position 123, the same sloth they held in July 2013 according to the latest FIFA Rankings released on Thursday. The rankings are not a surprise since Kenya has been inactive especially with international matches in the last couple of months. Algeria, Cote d’Ivore, Tunisia Ghana, and Senegal are the top five countries in the continent with Kenya’s AFCON qualifiers opponents, Congo occupying the 47th position, Zambia 68th while Guinea Bissau are 155th globally. Globally Germany remain at the top while Belgium has dethroned Argentina to second place, there best ever ranking, Colombia is fourth while Brazil is fifth. This comes at a time embattled Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nyamweya dismissed damning allegations made in a German TV, Deutsche Welle documentary that accused him of mismanaging Sh49.8m

terming them ‘reckless’. Nyamweya the defiant local federation boss trashed the claims contained in the investigative piece on corruption in football at world governing body, FIFA that aired on Deutsche Welle last month and threatening to take those publishing it “to the sweepers.” “That one my brother I cannot discuss about it because it is being handled by our legal experts and its recklessness. We want media houses not to be reckless, if you are given any documentation, you must have proof. “If you don’t have proof, you just don’t just write. Those days are over, these days if you do things that are illegal, my friend; you shall be taken to the sweepers. You do what you think is right. Don’t say so and so has robbed when it is not true,” Nyamweya said. “We also say as a federation, as an organisation, we are also protected by the Constitution of this country and if anybody wants to mess us, we are ready

to face the law,” the irked football boss ranted on. In the documentary titled “Soccer for Sale – Sepp Blatter and Allegations of Sleaze at FIFA” that aired on Deutsche Welle television last Monday, Nyamweya is accused of pocketing funds from FIFA development aid, grants from Confederation of African Football and other monies from the Government by, Jérôme J. Dufourg. Dufourg is a French football-marketing executive who worked with FKF and provided documents supporting claims that allegedly implicate Nyamweya. Responding to the resignation of FIFA president, Sepp Blatter who is also engulfed by claims of corruption running into millions of dollars in bribes to top officials in the world body, Nyamweya hailed the Swiss veteran for developing African football. He also called for an end to speculation surrounding bribery claims until authorities complete their investigations.

TARGET HIT: Julius Yego competes in the Men’s Javelin final during IAAF World Athletics Championships Moscow 2013 at Luzhniki Stadium on August 17, 2013 in Moscow, Russia.

Yego is on a roll

ommonwealth and African champion, Julius Yego set yet another Javelin national record in successive weeks at the IAAF Diamond League Rome Golden Gala yesterday night. Yego launched his spear out to a Kenyan record of 87.71m in round four, adding 85cm to his own mark set a week ago in Ostrava (86.88m) where he also achieved the milestone of being the first field athlete from his nation to triumph at an IAAF World Athletics Challenge event. “My aim was to improve the feelings from my throws in Ostrava because it was a very difficult competition in cold weather. But I did not expect to improve the national record again, that surprised me a lot. “I think I have put 90 percent of the energy into the race today, so there is still space to improve,” the Glasgow Commonwealth and two-time African champion who is aiming to be the first Kenyan to medal in a field event at a World Championships in Beijing this summer said. Those who stayed up at to watch the ‘You Tube Man’ do his thing at Stadio Olimpico took to social media to hail yet another landmark performance from the self-made Javelin star. “Another National Record from Yego what a week! We celebrate the performance,” Athletics Kenya CEO, Isaac Mwangi wrote on his Facebook wall in one of the many goodwill messages that flooded social media.
