Bid to change election date runs into more opposition The bid to change the election date from August to December continues to elicit opposition with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) the latest body to express their reservations. LSK chairman Eric Mutua says December is not an appropriate date for Kenyans to go to polls because there are many activities going on during that time that will bar Kenyans from exercising their democratic right. “In December there are rains in some parts of this country and therefore majority of people will be busy in their farms instead of voting. So should the polls be held in that month then it means many people will be locked out in exercising their democratic

right,” Mutua said. The LSK chairman said that the tourism sector is also likely to be affected if the polls are held in December as potential tourists may not come to the country fearing that the elections might be marred by violence. “Tourism as at its peak in December in this country and having elections in the same month, is likely to affect that” Mutua said. “Many people are in holiday mood in December and therefore likely to participate in their activities and be with family members instead of voting” Mutua added. Mutua said that August remain the ideal date for the polls as

many voters will only have one agenda of exercising their democratic right. “If we can have a day in August whereby the only agenda is election then we are likely to see a high voter turnout than in December whereby people have many activities to attend to before resuming work in January,” Mutua said. The LSK chairman added that the debate on the election date should be championed more by voters rather than the politicians. He faulted politicians saying that should the elections be held in August then they will have served a shorter term as expected by the constitution. “The issue of serving a shorter

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has also rejected changing the election date from August to December saying that Kenyans rejected the months of major holidays-April catering for

It also recommends that a representative from the Ministry of Interior be a member of the NGO regulatory authority also known as Public Benefit Organizations Regulatory Authority. The group that was chaired by former nominated MP Sophia Abdi recommended prohibition of registration of any NGO that is involved in advocating for what it terms as “promotion and advocacy of indecent acts”. The section appeared to target homosexual right groups after the High Court in a groundbreaking decision three months ago ruled that such organisations could formally be registered. “PBOs must uphold the security, cultural and religious values of Kenyans, the PBO Act be amended to prohibit registration of any public benefit organisation that is involved in promotion and advocacy of indecent acts,” the report says. The Abdi task force says that NGO’s must not be involved in the promotion of “national interest of another state or in recruitment, training and incitement of persons to undertake terrorist activities”. However, the report makes no mention of the controversial proposal to cap foreign funding to a maximum of 15 per cent of NGO budgets- instead suggesting that a percentage of donation received should be given to the regulatory authority. The proposal to slash funding widened the rift between the civil society and President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee administration when the legislation was tabled in Parliament in 2013. Many protested the amendment, which they said, was meant to bring down organisations

However, civil society players who have seen the report says it lacks “intellectual rigour” and should be dropped. “The report, which was supposed to be an authoritative document to guide policy, is lazy and reads like the private notes of an individual rather than a public document issued by the government,” said George Kegoro, Executive Director of International Commission of Jurists. International Center for Policy and Conflict

Executive Director Ndungu Wainaina termed the report “very hopeless”. “That report does not provide any content on what Kenyans said to the task force. Civil society has the detailed report and recodings of what Kenyans told the task force...That report recommendations are strangely coming from nowhere in the report. The recommendations appear clearly to have been manufactured elsewhere and then grafted into the report to justify or give entry point to government to achieve its ill-will motives,” Wainaina said.

Easter holidays and December for Christmas. Odinga over the weekend said based on the views of Kenyans, the rainy seasons of March-April and November-December were the first to be ruled out as election dates to avoid interference with the planting seasons. The Bill drafted by Ugenya MP David Ochieng proposes that the date of the next election be

moved from the second Tuesday of August to the third Monday of December. Ochieng argues that moving the polls to December will ensure national examinations are not interrupted. He has also argued that if elections are held in August, then it will interfere with school calendar and voter turnout is also likely to be low.

WAIGURU: WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO ACHIEVE GENDER RULE Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning Anne Waiguru has urged Members of parliament to adhere to the constitution and achieve the two-thirds gender rule. Waiguru said the government will officially launch a campaign for the achievement of the gender rule to make sure the gains achieved by the constitution is not watered down. “We can’t go back over this issue, MPs have to adhere to the constitution and implement the two thirds gender rule,” Waiguru said. Waiguru said there are some MPs that have already expressed their support to help push the agenda in the floor of the house. “It is unfortunate that many years after independence and passage of the new constitution in 2010, women STICK TO PLAN: CS Devolution and Planning Anne Waiguru in a previous press address.

still struggle to be recognised,” Waiguru said. Waiguru also challenged women to go for top public service jobs as part of women empowerment in the society. “When young girls see women in top public service jobs, they get encouraged and also work hard to make it” Waiguru said. Debate on the realisation of two-thirds gender principle has elicited mixed reactions as the deadline for attaining it is fast approaching. The Supreme Court in 2012 set August 27, 2015 for the attainment of the gender rule. Already National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale said Parliament will not be able to meet the August 27 timeline and has consequently asked for three months extension to debate on some Bills that were submitted late.

‘Dirty’ Kenyans cost the country Sh27 billion every year Poor sanitation costs Kenya Sh27 billion each year, the Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) reports. The costs are associated with medical care expenses, epidemic outbreaks that cost the government money to curtail and funeral charges for those affected. Other costs include loss of foreign revenue as a result of poor sanitary conditions that make Kenya a less competitive destination and water pollution, which is a cost that the government deals with through expensive development projects. Data from the WSP shows that ss many as 21 million Kenyans use unsanitary latrines while 5.6 million have no latrine at

The sum is equivalent to roughly Sh808 per person. “Open defecation costs Kenya billions every year and yet eliminating the practice would require less than 1.2 million latrines to be built and used,” says a report dubbed Economic Impacts of Poor Sanitation in Kenya. Roughly 20,000 Kenyans, most of whom are children under the age of five, become fatalities due to diarrhea. Close to 9 out of 10 of these cases are as a result of to poor water, sanitation and hygiene.

national Cohesion and integration Commission (nCiC) Chairman Francis Ole Kaparo.

National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Chairman Francis Ole Kaparo and a section of Members of parliament are seeking to criminalize use of vernacular in public offices. The draft bill dubbed ‘Cohesion and Integration Bill 2015’ is aimed at ending ethnicity in public offices and learning institutions. The draft bill proposed by the NCIC and the joint parliamentary committee on national cohesion also seeks to bar one ethnic community to have a high number of staff in universities. “There is a culture in this country that when a university is situated in a particular region, then majority of the staff should also come from the same region, this is wrong and we need to be changed,” Kaparo said. Should the bill go through parliament, then it will be illegal to speak in vernacular in public offices.

Speaking in Mombasa during a stakeholders forum, Kaparo said overstaffing of Universities with members from one ethnic community has been one the recipes for strikes in universities. “We must act now in order to bring sanity in our learning institutions, representations in Universities must be universal just like the name suggests” he said. Chairman of parliamentary committee on cohesion Johnson Sakaja said the bill is also aimed at reducing ethnic tension in the country. “In that Bill we are also seeking that NCIC to be given more powers to deal with leaders and individuals who incite one tribe against the other,” Sakaja said. “We must cure our country from this disease of tribalism which has also affected even our higher learning institution” he added.

Stand up against corruption, church tells Kenyans The Methodist Church in Kenya (MCK) presiding bishop Rev. Joseph Ntombura is calling on leaders of all shades to shun corruption. Rev. He was speaking in Mombasa during the annual Methodist Men fellowship at the Shanzu Teachers Training College. He urged leaders to shun the ‘abhorrent culture of diverting the country’s resources for personal use’. Rev. NEWS BRIEFS Uganda gay rights activists celebrate pride

Activists in Uganda have held a gay pride rally, a year since a law requiring homosexuals to be jailed for life was overturned. Crowds danced, sang and waved rainbow flags at the event held outside the capital Kampala, the culmination of a week of celebrations. One of those attending hoped it would be a “step forward” for the country. But many people in Uganda strongly oppose gay rights, and homosexuality is punishable with a jail sentence. Anti-gay legislation allowing for life imprisonment for “aggravated homosexuality” and banning the “promotion of homosexuality” was annulled by Uganda’s Supreme Court last year.

Rwandan soldier kills four colleagues A Rwandan soldier serving as a peacekeeper in the Central African Republic (CAR) has shot dead four colleagues before killing himself, the Rwandan Defence Ministry has said. Eight others were wounded in the attack, a statement said. A Rwandan military spokesman called the incident “deplorable”. Those dead served under the UN’s mission in CAR, deployed to support the country’s fragile transitional government. The country descended into sectarian violence in 2013 when the predominantly Muslim Seleka rebels seized power, prompting reprisals from Christian militia. An investigation was under way into the incident, which took place in the CAR’s capital Bangui, said Brig-Gen Joseph Nzabamwita. “We suspect terrorism without ruling out mental illness to be the cause,” he said.

Eight family members shot dead in Texas Six children and two adults have been found handcuffed and fatally shot in the head in a Texas home, following the arrest of a man who exchanged gunfire with police. The gunfire broke out when officers who had been called to the Houston-area home late on Saturday spotted the body of a child and tried to enter. A man surrendered about an hour later, after talks with police negotiators. Police said the suspect, David Conley, was later charged with capital murder. The Harris County Sheriff ’s Office said the bodies were found after “a welfare check was conducted on the premises” by deputies. A man inside opened fire when the deputies tried to force their way in. The dead were identified as Dewayne Jackson, 50, his wife Valerie Jackson, 40, and children Nathaniel, 13, Dewayne, 10, Honesty, 11, Caleb, nine, Trinity, seven, and Jonah, six.

Group targets to enlist a million diaspora voters The Kenya Diaspora Alliance (KDA) announced it is targeting one million Kenyans living abroad to register as voter in the 2017 elections. KDA Global Chairperson Shem Ochuodho said the Alliance is in talks with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and other stakeholders on Diaspora voting and the areas of partnership and cooperation. Ochuodho told a news conference that the diaspora is a major national resource that has the right to participate in all affairs of the government. He urged the government to put in more resources with the IEBC that will adequately facilitate the process of ensuring more Kenyans in the diaspora participate in the key vote. “In our talks with IEBC, we have realized that they do not have enough funds to facilitate Kenyans living abroad to vote, we urge Treasury to set aside specific amount for this process as 2017 is not far away,” he told reporters. He revealed that the association is already developing a database on available human capital in knowledge, skills and innovations. This comes after the Supreme Court directed the IEBC to effect

progressive voter-registration for Kenyans living in the diaspora and file annual reports for review by the National Assembly and the Senate, through the offices of the Speakers of the two Houses. “The IEBC shall put in place an infrastructure for the comprehensive registration of Kenyan citizens in the Diaspora as voters, to the extent that the numbers of such Kenyan citizens

participating in General Elections shall increase progressively over time,” the court directed. The highest court in the land threw out an appeal by the IEBC against the decision made on June 6, last year, by Appellate Judges Roselyne Nambuye, Daniel Musinga and Kathurima M’Inoti, requiring the agency to set up more registration centres for Kenyans living abroad to be registered as voters for all elective

positions. “The Court of Appeal’s directive to the IEBC, to ensure that registration of Diaspora-Kenyans as voters “in all elective positions” is effected progressively, in our view, did no more than express the principle of incremental progress towards a full-scale attainment of the right to vote, locally and in the Diaspora,” the Supreme Court Judges pointed out.

GOVERNMENT TO INVOLVE DIASPORA IN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AFFAIRS The government is keen on harnessing resources from Kenya Diaspora for national development, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed has said. Speaking during a Diaspora meeting also addressed by President Uhuru kenyatta on Sunday, Amb. Amina said her ministry had— on the instruction of the President – established a Diaspora Policy which was launched early this year. The policy seeks to enhance the welfare of Kenyans living abroad as well as harness their contribution to Kenya’s socio-economic transformation. “In terms of harnessing the contribution of the diaspora to national development, we want our brothers and sisters working abroad to be part of the transformation taking place at home. We are streamlining and simplifying the process of remitting

money. “We are also developing an investment incentive framework which includes lowering the costs of Diaspora transactions as well as aggregate diaspora remittances. Further, we are exploring possibilities of preferential duty waivers and other concessions for Diaspora businesses,” said Amb. Amina. CS Amina told the Kenya Diaspora that efforts were focused on negotiating protocols that simplify immigration procedures and facilitate our nationals in working and residing in their host countries. “Here in Uganda, these efforts have resulted in the waiver of work and resident permits. Moreover, we are targeting to enhance the provision of consular services by strengthening existing missions as well as opening new ones in countries with many Kenyans,” said CS

Amina. She reminded the Diaspora of the President’s directive to allow them to bring in right-hand-drive vehicles duty-free on their return home. Under the program, those who live in countries where vehicles are left-hand are also allowed to import a right-hand vehicle of similar value duty-free. On Diaspora participation in and influencing public policy direction by participating in the electoral process in the country, CS Amina said remarkable progress has been made in this regard and the Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission has launched a web portal for purposes of registration and voting of Kenyan diaspora. “Those of you who may not travel home to vote can participate in this exercise to enable IEBC to determine the distribution of Kenyans for easy registration and eventual voting,” said Amb. Amina.

High demand causes surplus of low quality office space The demand for Nairobi’s Grade B office spaces has doubled over the past year, outpacing the demand for Grade ‘A’ units, a management group reports. Mentor Management Limited (MML)—East Africa’s largest locally based construction, project and development company— reported that in 2014, 560,000 square feet of office space was sold to tenants. Unveiling its fourth half-yearly office market report, MML’s project and development managers noted that this year,

that figure has almost tripled, to an estimated 1.6 million square feet. The escalating demand for office blocks has therefore led to an oversupply of lower quality Grade B office space. “We are seeing ever more developers looking to finance their schemes through sales of fractions of office blocks, but also a move into fractional ownership by investors and occupiers,” said James Hoddell, CEO of MML. “This opens the door to making smaller investments in the office market, which broadens access

to a wider pool of investors. But, at a time of burgeoning supply, it moves the risk of not finding tenants on to these investors,” he said. Selling of blocks in fractions comes as the amount of new office space continues to gallop upwards. “The higher occupancy levels in the best buildings demonstrate that quality of specification remains the most important factor in successful office development in Nairobi, alongside location,” said Mr Hoddell.

Kenya resolves sugar tiff with Uganda Ugandan business owners and companies will now access permits that will allow the country to export its surplus sugar to the Kenyan market. In March, Uganda had criticised Kenya’s decision to limit sugar imports from the East Africa region and the dispute sparked a diplomatic row between the two states. Speaking in Kampala, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Cabinet Secretary, Amb. Amina Mohammed said: “We have reorganized to merge Kenya Sugar Board with other government parastatals to form Agricultures, Fisheries and Food Authority (AFFA) to curb delays in processing of permits. “There was a technical problem in processing of permits but I would want to assure the government of Uganda and the private sector

that the issue has been dealt with.” She said. During the meeting with Uganda officials and industry players, the two countries considered formation of a joint body to manage the sub sector of sugar since Kenya is a sugar deficient country which imports sugar from other countries including Uganda. Uganda allowed Kenya’s beef and related products to access Uganda market after complaints from Ugandan officials that Kenya was blocking the access to its lucrative sugar market. Speaking during the same forum, Uganda Trade Minister Amelia Kyambadde said although there was a piece of legislation required from Kenya on beef and beef products, her government had decided to immediately

open its market to Kenya. “We are going to put in place mechanisms to implement this directive as soon as next week,” said Kyambadde. The two countries will soon hold another forum to address standardization of tea and maize, access to Uganda for Kenya cement and rice, EAC Duty Remission Scheme and Anti-malarial drugs and charges of Plant Import Permit. I dumped real estate investment for pig farming A Kayole agribusiness farmer is making profits in urban farming from a 25 by 60 feet plot after dumping his investments in real estate to pig rearing. Muhoro Mwai delved into pig farming and is earning what no other Entrepreneur within Kayole can rake from the real estate as rent. In a 25 by 60 feet plot, Mwai rears 140 pigs including sows, piglets and boars which he sells them to

butchers and other buyers including farmers who want to venture in the phenomenon. “Most pig farmers complain about the exorbitant price of conventional feeds but what has made my venture successful is that I have minimized expenses because I obtain feeds from the manufacturer.’’ Muhoro said. Muhoro says he usually buys feeds like rice bran from Mwea irrigation scheme for Sh 470 per

70kg bag which costs Sh 1600 in Nairobi and the price can be reduced if purchased in bulk. To keep his flock healthier, Mwai reveals that he mixes the bran with other supplements and minerals together with cabbage waste that he buys from Wakulima Market at Sh 150 per bag. “I feed them once per day and ensure they are well fed and there is constant check from the veterinary officer. With that I

have managed to keep them healthy and attractive to buyers,” he added. To minimize the small space, he has built storey pens for the pigs which sow up to 11 piglets which are sold at between Sh 15,000 and Sh 25,000 just at seven months old. He has also invested in four dairy cows and 30 indigenous chicken which are not for commercial purposes though is aiming at expanding the venture to rake high from the enterprise.

“At 35, I wouldn’t wish for anything else. I have totally enjoyed this kind of farming especially doing it in the urban areas where most of the people believe it is impossible. I have employed two people who have been of great help to me, and most importantly, I have built a business I never thought would give me such huge returns within such a short time. There is money in farming,” he said.

Following a notable depreciation of the Group’s share price during the recent downturn experienced at the NSE, the announcement supported an increase of 10.19 per cent in the price of Equity shares to Sh43.25 from Sh39.25 previously. Year to date, Equity Group Holdings shares are down by -13.50 per cent. In addition to sustained strong growth in customer loans and deposits, the Group stands to gain from its on-going expansion into new regional markets and drive into the mobile money space.

thefall Unga Group Limited

Manufacturing and allied sector firm Unga Group Limited took this week’s position of top losing stock after its share price fell -11.11 per cent to close the week at a price of Sh40.00 from its previous week’s closing price of Sh45.00. Unga Group Ltd is a holding company whose subsidiaries are involved in the manufacture and marketing of human nutrition as well as animal nutrition and health products. The Company had recorded a noteworthy 59.4 per cent increase in pre-tax profit in the half year to December 2014 on the back of improved performance attributed to a new wheat mill as well as the sale of its stake in packaging firm Bullpak Limited. However, the recent depreciation of the Kenya and Ugandan currencies against the US Dollar will likely negatively affect the firm’s full year performance. MAKE WAY FOR

NYASANJE’S NEW SOUND

OMg AllAN WANGA lOSES MUM tO cANcER Allan Wetende Wanga, husband to the television reporter Brenda Wanga and Kenyan striker currently playing for Azam FC in Tanzanian is bereaved. Alan has lost his mother who was diagnosed with intestinal cancer and passed on at the intensive care unit while undergoing treatment. Many celebrities continue offering their condolences to the young couple at this trying time. We continue to keep the family in prayer. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Who is Nyasanje? I am a woman first before anything else, a sister, a friend, a daughter, a singer and a writer of music lyrics. Tell us about your musical journey? I was exposed to music at a tender age by my late father’s (God rest his soul) collection of Franco, Madilu, Tshala Mwana,Mbilia Bel and the likes but only until my fifth grade in Primary School did I discover I had the ability to write my own music. I have not had any training in music neither have I performed before an audience but I have always known that nothing would give me the satisfaction and fulfillment music would give me. I’ve been writing and singing except only few close friends and family know about it, I have previously recorded a few pieces but wasn’t satisfied with my sound just yet until recently when I felt ready and in my pursuit for a perfect sound for my voice through my producer Brian of ABH sound, I came across the #Kitunikukachora project and did not hesitate when he asked of me to be part of it. How would you describe your genre of music? My debut single ‘Pangri’ is a Luo Rhumba song from its sound and rhythm. What other genres are you interested in doing? Afro-jazz, Afro-pop, I am open to trying a lot more of other genres as long as my music remains relevant. What inspired your debut single? It’s a campaign song I composed for the

‘Kukachora project, but even so every bit of the song is a ridicule, challenge and encouragement more to self than to the listeners in the words of my song. Just general experiences and observations if am to sum it up. What or who is your source of musical inspiration? Music to me is like a safe haven. I feel more alive when I create a piece more than anything I know of, it’s everything to me.... the only one thing I’ve held onto longer even when I thought there was no hope for ever going public with it. Which Kenyan artiste would you like to work with? That may change a lot depending on what my song is about or what genre am doing but strangely as it may sound I’d very much love to work with Collo King wa rap on a track. What challenges have you faced as a new act venturing into the music industry? Maybe I’ve just waited too long for the opportunity to showcase my music. H

e who finds a wife finds a good thing, and Cecil chose to look for the love of his life at the place he loves the most; close to God’s heart. From the moment he set his eyes on Benta while serving together in church, Cecil knew that he had found the ‘one’. But it was not all roses and lilies for Cecil who recalls that Benta was on the elusive at the time, as he tells X Access. “I tried asking her out but she declined at first.” So how did the lovely couple get to the point of standing before men and God to declare their unending love? “After one and a half years of being out of touch, we met at a rather somber occasion, my mother’s funeral. We started talking and well, the rest is ‘history’, as they say,” says an openly excited Cecil. There can never be a wedding without a proposal, and Cecil made sure that his was both romantic and memorable. He popped the ring during a bible study session last December, to the delightful surprise of Benta who excitedly affirmed her interest in delving into the forever and always commitment to Cecil with a resounding yes. Eight months later, a breathtaking bride, dressed in a pure white gown with her face covered by a white veil slowly walked down the NPC Valley Road Church after the bridal party, ladies in apple green dresses and the gentlemen in brown suits brightened up by apple green ties, danced their hearts out

towards the altar where prince charming was patiently waiting for his Cinderella. There was a sigh of relief when Cecil, donning a chocolate brown suit and apple green tie, and the congregation finally set their eyes upon the bride. It was on; “not by faith, but by sight” as the presiding priest lightly put it. The church service went on without a hitch, as the couple received advice regarding marriage life even as their parents and other men of God in attendance took some time to dedicate the marriage to God. With no one in attendance speaking out during the tense moment given to anyone with a reason against a marriage, Cecil and Benta exchanged their heartfelt vows and the rings, and finally signed the marriage certificates. They were now bound to one another, both legally and religiously. After a brief general photo session outside the church, the bridal party, led by the newlyweds in a shiny black Mercedes Benz, headed out to a more private photoshoot, as their guests streamed in for lunch at the reception. After capturing the memories of their big day in the form of still photos, the bridal party rejoined the guests at the reception amidst song and dance, followed by short speeches, gift presentation and cake cutting. By 6 o’clock, all had been said and done, and the guests departed for other activities with the couple later leaving for their honeymoon to an undisclosed location. Congratulations to Cecil and Benta.

Octopizzo launches LDPC album in style

Clad in a brown winter hooded trench coat, a red Marvin hat underneath, a grey sweatshirt, a pair of sun glasses, a pair of faded blue jeans and brown Timberland boots, the man of the moment-Octopizzo emerged on stage at 1621hrs on Saturday for his LDPC album launch. ‘Its namba nane baibe’, were his first words as his live band backup put him in the mood with a revised and enhanced play of the vile inafaa in which he featured Muthoni the Drummer queen. Hosted by Code Red’s DJ Stylez, the album unveiling ceremony had been delayed due to bad weather that had earlier in the day hit Nairobi and its environs prompting the Deejays of the day to run the

show with back to back music mixes and simultaneously hype the hundreds of rap music enthusiasts and Octopizzo fans who had braved the bad weather. The K.I.C.C COMESA grounds where MO sound had mounted a stage and provided good sound came alive with Octopizzo’s renditions of his singles introducing the new tracks in his LDPC album and going down memory lane in flashbacks of his previous works. Sponsored by the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), UNHCR and the British Council, the LDPC album launch attracted an array of dignitaries in the NGO sector as well as comedians Eric Omondi, Owago Onyiro, Oga Obinna, Chipukeezy,DJs

Miss Kenya judge drunk on the job HOT DJ Krowbar and DJ Sadic The Miss Kenya 2015 contest went down this past weekend but not without a few hitches. The event that was to begin at 7.30 pm began three and a half hours late kicking off at 2259hrs. All that time as the contestants and the audience waited impatiently, it seems the judges were having a good time on a drinking binge. Judge Moraa, who was representing an online shopping platform dubbed Kaymu must have had one too many. When the MC requested a speech from a representative from Kaymu, Moraa rushed on to the runway but ended up fumbling and embarrassing herself when it dawned on everyone that she couldn’t express herself leaving the audience wondering whether she was qualified to judge in the first place.

weekend escapades

We all know that gospel and secular music do not see eye to eye, not even the artistes from the two factions hang out together. But what do you do as a gospel music artiste when you find yourself at a secular music album launch? DJ Krowbar and DJ Sadic found themselves between a rock and a hard place when they graced Octopizzo’s LDPC album launch. So as to avoid controversy, the two DJs played smart, DJ Sadic briefly performed pages za Bible then introduced DJ Krowbar who then decided to put Octopizzo and his family before the Lord. Thereafter they both disappeared, having fooled all but not X-ACCESS!

The beef between rap artistes Octopizzo and Khaligraph continue to intensify every day with either artiste finding fault in the others’ music and lifestyle. At his LDPC album launch, Octopizzo performed a song titled R.I.P (Rest in Peace) off the album dedicating it to Khaligraph Jones amidst uproar and cheers from his fans that graced the launch. We are yet to hear from Khaligraph on this latest beef.

MUSTREAD Our Sister Kilijoy — by Ama Ata Aidoo

A young African lady, Sissie, sets out for Europe in a bid to empower herself with education which is scarce in her country Ghana, which is at the time predominated by intellectual neo-colonialism. The main focus of the author is highlighting the issue of Africans idolizing Europeans, a major characteristic of post-colonialism Africa. On arrival in Germany, Sissie is enraged by her African brothers and sisters who have also immigrated to European countries in search of education, but have been derailed from their cause after being assimilated into the materialistic foreign mindset. The author integrates the issue of same gender relationships as Sissie’s first friend in Germany, Marija, starts making passes at her as her stay in Germany draws to a close and she sets out for England where she finds fellow Africans living in wretched conditions.

Solving students unrest by banning mock exams implausible I find the Education CS’ explanation and diagnosis for the prevalent unrests in high schools quite hollow and ambiguous. Mock exams cannot be an adequate, anterior and

sufficient cause for the frequent student’s strikes we witness in school these days, neither can banning mock be the ideal diagnosis as Mr. Kaimenyi wants us believe. Mr. Kaimenyi seems

to be relying on hypothetical and prima facie evidence verbosely presented to him by his underlings and school managements and not well researched and tested empirical evidence to

ascertain the primal cause of this anomaly The minister needs more explanation than that which school management and teachers possible give because definitely they will provide

weird and lopsided reasons for their favor. It is rational to try listen to students and work with their explanation too in pursuit of tactical approach that seek to end these strikes once and for all, otherwise

Parents are to blame for unrests in schools, drug addiction and indiscipline The many cases of unrests in schools, indiscipline and instances of drug use among students are a worrying trend and should be dealt with fast and swiftly. I believe most parents in this age and time are to blame for raising up children whose priorities are nowhere near achieving academic excellence only whilst obeying school rules and regulations. Our schools are operating without the goodwill of the parents when it comes to matters discipline. Charity begins at home, but when parents are not keen on punishing

their children for wrongdoing, the teachers’ hands are tied thus they cannot administer punishment to these kids. With time, the children get used to the fact that no one can punish them and end up engaging in acts of drug abuse, indiscipline and other atrocities. As parents, let us all arise and free ourselves from the shackles of blackmail and guilt of disciplining our children and secure a bright future for them. —Suffocate Mkenya, Nairobi

Opposition leaders need to stop politicizing everything for their own personal gain It has emerged that opposition leaders are fighting policies that benefit Kenyans for the sake of furthering their personal goals. This has got to stop! These buggers can politicize anything if they are allowed to roam free. Some of these fools act like they need a shot in the head from a Minnesota Dentist (rest in peace Cecil the lion).

Our MPs and opposition leaders need to understand that getting elected is not about putting down good policies and dog-piling on sustainable initiatives. They need to see that their politics should take a back seat when the needs of the less fortunate are at stake. —Dennis L., Nairobi

Charged volleyball queens target Peru upset in Japan MONDAY, AUGUST 10, 2015

Kenya women’s volleyball team wants to repeat their historic win against Peru when the two sides meet next month at the FIVB world Cup in Japan. Malkia Strikers are expected to depart this Thursday for world games and David Lung’aho charges want to prove that their 3-1 win against Peru wasn’t a fluke as Kenya seek first win in four five attempts at the Japan games. This will be the first time Lung’aho will be in charge of the national team for the first time in these games as head coach and the Kenya Prisons tactician has identified Peru, Argentina and Cuba who are currently enjoying a poor form as the possible targets to writing history where Kenya will be seeking her first win at the world games and possibly better their disappointing 12th position in the 2011 edition. The last time Kenya took part in the World Cup, Paul Bitok was the head coach and Lung’aho as his assistant.

Kenya is yet to win a single match in their last four attempts at the crown but Lung’aho, Kenya’s most successful coach with both the national team and Club believe the players have come of age. “There is a winning mentality that has come in the team. If our opponents are not careful we may surprise them and possibly snatch the trophy,” said a confident Lung’aho of the Kenyan side, still struggling to drop the ‘underdog’ tag at these games where the top three teams will automatically book a ticket to Rio Olympics. “My target will be to be the first (Kenyan) coach to win a match at the world cup and we’re targeting usual suspects, Peru,” added Lung’aho. The team is expected to depart this Thursday for Japan where they will play a number of build up matches organised by Japanese coach Sadatoshi Sugawara before the championship serves off on August 22.

BLOCKED: Kenya blocking agains Peru during the World Grand Prix Group 3 final in canberra, Australia.

Oliech, Mariga to fight for first team spot

FRIENDLY FOES: Midfielder McDonald Mariga (left) celebrates his goal for Kenya against Angola with teammates Dennis Oliech and Bob Mugalia at Nyayo stadium on March 27, 2011.

Dennis Oliech and MacDonald Mariga will have to fight for their places in the Harambee Stars squad that faces Zambia next month in a 2017 AFCON qualifier despite their surprise inclusion in the squad by head coach Bobby Williamson. Stars host 2012 champions, Chipolopolo (Copper Bullets) on September 5 and head coach Williamson has recalled the pair due to their experience in the crunch tie. Oliech, the former Captain Oliech, 30 is struggling to find a new club after leaving relegated side Ajaccio in the French league same as Mariga, 28 whose side Parma FC of Italy were relegated to the Serie D (fourth division) as punishment for bankruptcy. Mariga, the elder brother of captain and Southampton FC’s Victor Wanyama, is the first and only Kenyan to win the UEFA Champions League. “They’re in the squad and will be looked along with the rest,” Williamson told Capital Sport on the pair who were the mainstays of

the national team for almost a decade before a combination of injury and for Oliech, disciplinary issues saw them weaned from national reckoning. Oliech who is credited with 65 international goals moved from France Ligue 2 side AJ Ajaccio in February to return to the Gulf where he made his name and signed for Al Nasr but is yet to feature for them. He was stripped of the captaincy and axed from the team by Williamson’s predecessor, Adel Amrouche, in the run-up to their 2014 World Cup qualifier away to Malawi and he subsequently refused to travel with the side to Blantyre in June 2013. Stars report for residential training next week ahead of the crunch Zambia tie with all team tied at a point a piece in the group following opening round 1-1 draw with Congo in Brazzaville. Only the driver was on board at the time of the shooting and police are now investigating. The vehicle was travelling from the team hotel to pick the players up from Bielefeld Central Station.

Chatthe two wins away from National Rally title Jaspreet Singh Chatthe and his Mitsubishi Evolution X R4 is just two legs away from winging the Kenya National Rally Championship which enters is seventh leg in Nakuru next month. Chatthe finished fourth overall in the sixth leg of KCB Rally held last weekend in Machakos behind former Britain and Finland champion Tapio Laukkanen, Carl “Flash” Tundo who settled for second ahead of Baldev Chager.

WAY TO GO: Karan Patel (right) and Navigator Tauseef Khan (Left) (Subaru GC8) receive a cheque of Kshs 10,000 worth of V-power fuel from Vivo Energy Marker Analyst Fahad Adil during the prize giving ceremony of the just concluded KCB Machakos rally.

Navigated by Pasi Torma in a Subaru Impreza GVB13, Tapio’s service crew came to his rescue after a mechanical breakdown to restore his gearbox in less than 20 minutes and still went ahead to beat the Kenyan drivers in chilly weather to take the top spot. “My service crew was able change the gearbox in less than 20 minutes after I was forced to use only numbers four and five of the transmission in one stage.

Transmission had given up but we survived to win the rally. It is good feeling,” said Tapio Tundo beat Chager by nine seconds to take the second spot. It was the second loop that proved challenging for the drivers following short drizzle which rendered the roads slippery and tricky to navigate through. This was the third win for Tapio who is tackling the full season of KNRC this and a second successive scalp

after clinching the season-opening rally in Kisumu last month’s round in Eldoret. Ian Duncan in a Xado EVOX finished seventh after encountering a puncher in the day that also saw Rajbir Rai and two times Uganda Champion Jas Mangat bow out of the race. Fortunately we are both fine though our car is damaged underneath on the front. We are out of the rally. IAAF hits back at scientists over doping allegations

DOPING SCAM: The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has criticised doping claims made by two scientists Robin Parisotto and Michael Ashenden.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has criticised doping claims made by two scientists. Robin Parisotto and Michael Ashenden analysed blood tests from athletes which were accessed by the Sunday Times and German broadcaster ARD/WDR. Parisotto said he had never seen such an abnormal set of blood values. The IAAF countered: “They do not have access to IAAF testing records and are therefore not able to know if

proper testing follow-up was conducted.” A total of 12,000 blood tests from 5,000 athletes were assessed and the report claims a third of medals (146, including 55 golds) in endurance events at the Olympics and World Championships between 2001 and 2012 were won by athletes who had recorded suspicious tests. Athletes who had dubious test results allegedly won ten medals at London 2012 and a top UK athlete was among

seven Britons with suspicious blood scores. Parisotto said: “So many athletes appear to have doped with impunity, and it is damning that the IAAF appears to have idly sat by and let this happen.” According to Ashenden, the files show athletics is now in the same “diabolical position” as cycling during the Lance Armstrong era. He said it was “a shameful betrayal of [the IAAF’s] primary duty to police their sport and to protect clean athletes”.

Argentine F1 legend Juan Manuel Fangio exhumed The body of 1950s motor-racing legend, Juan Manuel Fangio, has been exhumed on the orders of a judge in Argentina. He ordered samples from Fangio’s body be taken to try to resolve paternity cases brought by two men

in their seventies claiming to be his sons. Fangio won the F1 world championship five times in the 1950s. He never married and did not declare any children, but his

biographers say that he had a twodecade relationship with a woman. Her son, Oscar Espinosa, had a brief spell in Formula 3 and was known by colleagues as “Cancho” Fangio. Another man, Ruben Vazquez,

brought a separate paternity claim. Juan Manuel Fangio was a sporting legend in Argentina by the time he retired. Vazquez said he had no financial interests: “I just want to be recognised for the Fangio surname.”

Juan Manuel Fangio, who died in 1995 aged 84, left his estate to a foundation and a museum, which bears his name. His F1 record stood until Germany’s Michael Schumacher broke it in 2003.

Rampant Gor Mahia empty KCB’s vault Gor Mahia delivered an emphatic reminder to the rest of the SportPesa Premier League of who is the boss when they annihilated hapless KCB FC 6-1 at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday. The champions who are seeking to hold on to their crown for a third successive season returned to domestic top flight action after a three-week absence to attend to Cecafa Kagame Cup duties and by the time they were done, the Banker’s vault had been broken into and robbed dry. Erstwhile title challengers, Ulinzi Stars and Tusker FC failed to close the gap on runaway leaders K’Ogalo after being held to identical 1-1 draws by home-side Sony Sugar and visiting Western Stima in that order as Bandari and Chemelil played out a barren draw in Mombasa. In their first outing after being vanquished 2-0 by Tanzanian giants, Azam FC in the Kagame Cup final in Dar-es-Salaam, Gor did more than reassert themselves as domestic title favourites as they blew away KCB as their rivals stuttered to leave them eight clear at the top on 49 points. A brace from Meddie Kagere and further strikes from star forward, Michael Olunga, an own from Mark Odhiambo, Khalid Aucho and Enock Agwanda drowned KCB who got their consolation from their star attacker, Paul Mungai Kiongera who was once loaned to Gor. The match got off to a brisk start withr Benjamin Chaka stirring the hornet’s nest in the second minute when he worked Boniface Oluoch in K’Ogalo’s goal in the second minute before his opposite number Zachary Onyango brilliantly turned away quick fire efforts from Olunga and Kagere inside the opening 10. After spurning a gilt edged opportunity to open the scoring, Olunga finally bulged the KCB net for the opener after 15 when he headed in a Godfrey Walusimbi cross before Kagere added a fine second on 36 when he fired in a volley from a lofted pass from Innocent Wafula. KCB returned from the break determined to force their way back to the game only for Odhiambo to beat his keeper in the 55th when his effort to stop Kagere from finding Olunga in the box only ended up beating Onyango.

Sloane Stephens takes first WTA title at Citi Open Sloane Stephens sat at a table for her postmatch news conference, eyed the trophy sitting at arm’s length, and asked, “What happens to this?” Forgive the 22-year-old American for not knowing. She’s never been given championship hardware at a professional tournament before. Stephens earned a WTA title for the first time Sunday, overwhelming Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 6-1, 6-2 in the final of the hard-court Citi Open. “Nothing was rushed. Nothing was given to me. I had to work for everything. It was just nice that all of the hard work and everything I’ve put into it — now I can say that I have a tournament title,” Stephens said. “Everything happens

when it’s supposed to happen.” It was her first final as a pro. Entering this tune-up for the US Open, she owned a .685 career winning percentage at Grand Slam tournaments, including getting to the second week in seven appearances, with a semi-final showing at the Australian Open and quarter-final run at Wimbledon, both in 2013. But at lesser events, her winning percentage was only .524. At Washington, for example, she was just 3-4 before this year, with three first-round exits. But Stephens did not lose a set during her four victories this week, including a semi-final win over 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur on Saturday. Neither of Sunday’s finalists was

seeded; Stephens is ranked 35th, and Pavlyuchenkova is 40th. Stephens raced to a 3-0 lead within 10 minutes by taking 15 of the first 21 points and never looked back. She broke Pavlyuchenkova five times while saving 5 of 6 break points she faced and compiled an impressive ratio of 20 winners to nine unforced errors. At her news conference, a reporter mentioned that Stephens has been considered the best women’s tennis player without a title for quite some time. “Now you’ll have somebody else to talk about,” Stephens replied. “I’m sure there’s someone else, so I will pass that torch on to whoever’s behind me.”

We will recover from ‘nerves’ — Wenger Arsenal boss says team will respond after West Ham loss

A

rsenal will recover from the “nerves” they suffered in their opening-day Premier League defeat by West Ham, their manager Arsene Wenger says. The Gunners lost 2-0 at home on Sunday, despite having 62% of possession and 22 shots. “We will respond to that accident,” Wenger said. “The players were maybe too nervous and put too much pressure on themselves. Today we have been hurt mentally and it is a good opportunity to

respond.” He added: “We were not convincing offensively or defensively. I knew it could be a tricky game. If you can’t win the game, make sure you don’t lose it.” Wenger, whose side finished third last season and won the FA Cup, has been under pressure to add players to his squad, with keeper Petr Cech - a £10m signing from Chelsea - the only summer arrival at the Emirates. Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is a reported target for

Arsenal, but Wenger said new additions would not have aided a performance where his side managed just six shots on target. “I would like to think that we are responsible for buying the players, not the media,” the Frenchman said. “When you’re a pro footballer, you have to face your responsibilities and not always look at something else. “Today we have to look at ourselves and think we were not good enough and not to think that these kinds of things [signings] are solutions for us.”
