Uganda confirms killing of 12 soldiers in al-Shabaab attack Uganda has confirmed the killing of twelve of her soldiers in Somalia following an attack at their camp in Janale, 90km south west of the capital Mogadishu on Monday evening. Reports emerged on Tuesday that al-Shabaab fighters had overrun an Amisom military base in southern Somalia, inflicting heavy casualties. AU forces confirmed the attack but could not give the figure of casualties. And today, Ugandan military spokesman Gen Paddy Ankunda said that Uganda Peoples Defence Forces has confirmed the killing of 12 of their soldiers in the attack. “UPDF has confirmed 12 soldiers died in Somalia Janale attack,” he said in a tweet today morning adding that their bodies would soon arrive at Entebbe Airport. “Twelve soldiers died, ten are landing this morning, two more to follow,” he said in another tweet. He said the army could not reveal the number and names of the casualties before their families were notified. “Number and names of the
dead will be published now that the Next of Kin have been notified as per our policy. Next of Kin had to be informed first instead of learning about it from TV,” he explained. Although al-Shabaab said they had killed 70 AU soldiers in the attack, Gen Ankunda said only twelve had been killed and that Amisom has accounted for all their soldiers. “AMISOM has accounted for all its soldiers. None is missing in action from Janaale attack,” he said. Ugandan Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Katumba Wamala flew to Mogadishu yesterday to meet UPDF commanders following the attack. He was to assess the security situation and return to Kampala ‘as soon as possible’. Gen Ankunda has vowed relentless onslaught against the militants saying the attack would give their soldier fresh impetus to fight. “We will not relent in our efforts to help in the pacification of Somalia. This attack is a game changer and al-Shabaab can only expect
an appropriate response from UPDF,” he vowed. The attack started with a suicide car bombing at the base’s gate, followed by sustained gunfire which lasted more than an hour. Residents told the BBC Somali service that AU forces were seen leaving the base, which is run by the Ugandan troops. They said they counted the bodies of 20 AU soldiers and later they saw more troops arriving at the base after the militants had left with weapons. The AU mission in Somalia (Amisom) says the situation was complex and that their troops had taken “a tactical withdrawal.” Correspondents in Mogadishu say the situation in the area is very tense and few residents remain there. The militants had earlier damaged a nearby bridge with a massive bomb to prevent troops from escaping, Col Ahmed Hassan from the Somali army told the Associated Press. TSC threatens to sack teachers From Page 1 “No strike notice has been issued as per the law. Whatever reason given for the strike is still subject to an appeal in the Court of Appeal. Any strike action emanating from the current circumstances is illegal and unprotected,” a statement signed by the TSC’s Head of Communications Kihumba Kamotho warned. “Individual teachers who boycott work or engage in unprofessional conduct will certainly suffer consequences in accordance to the Teachers Service Commission Act and the Code of Regulations for Teachers.” But in a quick rejoinder, KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion said the statement was a mere act of intimidation and that they were not compelled to issue another strike notice. “Don’t expect us to go back and issue another seven day strike notice when there was another notice that was issued on December 28, 2014, and the strike commenced on January 5, 2015, we only opted to move to court
and now that there is non-compliance on the part of the Teachers Service Commission, teachers are at liberty to resume strike action without prompting the employer.” The union also termed as an ‘exercise in futility’ reports that TSC sent chiefs, policemen and its officers to take roll call in schools. “Let those officers and the police go and take roll calls of trees in schools, they know very well that teachers are on strike and still send officers to schools,” Nzili told X News today. “We shall not move an inch below what was awarded and we will only resume duties when all this is delivered. We are not negotiating with the court orders,” added Sossion. This came even as a section of the Civil Society threatened to sue the government and the Teachers’ Unions for ‘making the pupils suffer’ while they are not party to the standoff between the two. the attack. “The Government of the Republic of Kenya condemns this atrocious criminal act in the strongest terms possible. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of
those innocent victims of the terror attack,” Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed bemoaned in a statement sent to newsrooms today. Al-Shabaab said the attack in Janale district, in the lower Shabelle region, was revenge
for the killing of seven civilians by Ugandan troops at a wedding in the town of Merka in July. Ugandan troops are part of a 22,000-strong AU force battling the militants.
Kenyans want KDF to stay in Somalia; Ipsos survey shows A majority of Kenyans at 57 percent support the continued deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to Somalia, according to a new IPSOS survey. The report indicates that among those who support, 70 percent are aligned to the Jubilee coalition while 39 percent are CORD supporters. Of the supporters, Central leads at 80 percent, followed by Rift Valley at 62 percent while North Eastern and Western support least at 39pc and 37pc respectively. Kenya Defence Forces under the African Union Mission in Somalia has played a huge role in reducing cases of terror attacks in the country but the survey indicates that 70 percent of Kenyans still find terror as the major threat in the country.
“In terms of general support for the continued presence of the KDF in Somalia the country appears almost evenly split, with just a modest majority (57pc) favouring this policy. In regional terms, a clear contrast emerges, however, with support for it in Central considerably higher than in the next most supportive region, Rift Valley (62pc), with both far above that in the two regions where such support is lowest, North Eastern and Western (39pc and 37pc, respectively),” it reads. Western region at 81pc and Nyanza at 79pc see the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab militia as a major threat to the country’s security. The report further indicates that victims of crime in the country have reduced from 9pc to 5pc in the last three
months. The report has not given a clear attribution to the drop, though the period so intensive enhancement of security across the country following the visit of US President Barrack Obama. The study indicates Nairobi had the highest number of victims of crime at 14 percent, North Eastern following closely at 10 percent with Nyanza and Rift Valley having the least at 3 and 2 percent respectively. Among these victims, only half at 51 percent reported to Police, a figure in the middle of the reporting-range over the last ten years. IPSOS says it sampled 2002 respondents during the survey conducted in the past three months. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

Deputy Governors implore senate in row with bosses Constant power struggle witnessed between Governors and their deputies can only be solved by the Senate. Chair of the Deputy Governor’s forum Joash Maangi urged the Senate to clearly define the role of the Deputy Governors in the Counties in order to avoid some ugly scenes of power struggle that has been seen in some counties. Maingi said currently most functions are done by the Governors with the deputies only stepping in when they are away on official duties. “It is only the Senate that is tasked with protecting devolution that can help solve this row by clearly defining the role of deputy governors,” Maingi said. Maingi who is the deputy governor of Kisii County said currently most deputy Governors are in charge of day to day running of the ministries at the county level and also advising the Governors on various issues affecting the county. He attributed the strained relationship of Governors and their deputies in some counties to the 2017 politics and the control of massive resources at the counties. “Most of it is about politics and everyone
wants to control the resources,” Maingi said. Nairobi, Kisumu and Machakos are some of the Counties where Governors and their deputies have been at loggerhead in the recent past In Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko has always accused Governor Evans Kidero of corruption and have in the past clashed over the running of the City. The battle for political supremacy between the two City leaders also played out at Uhuru Park during this year’s Labour Day celebrations, prompting President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and told the Senator to let Kidero do his work until the next election. “Whether you make noise, your current Governor is Evans Kidero, give him a chance to do his work and you will have an opportunity to elect another in 2017,” Uhuru told Sonko supporters. In Machakos Deputy Governor Bernard Kiala has accused the county administration of graft Kisumu Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga and the Governor Jack Ranguma also do not read from the same script on the running of the County with the former accusing the Governor of being corrupt.
manual developed to ease communication with the deaf Parents with deaf children can now talk to their children with ease after the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) developed a manual that is set to ease their communication. While launching the manual in Nairobi yesterday, education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi said the manual will help children with hearing impairment to acquire competencies in sign language. He said that the manual will help the deaf children to interact and participate both in school and family activities. “With this manual, parents of children who are deaf will acquire competencies in sign language to support their children as they interact and participate in family, school
and community activities,” he said. Kaimenyi commended the Kenya Institute for Curriculum for coming up with the manual saying deaf children have been sidelined in most activities not only in school but also at family level. “Parents of children who are deaf should now seize this opportunity and read the manual, understand it in order to benefit from it as we want an all-inclusive society where non feels discriminated,” Kaimenyi said. Chief Executive Officer KICD Julius Jwan said institution was also in the process of adopting digital content to aid learning with ease. He said the institute will use experts to develop the digital content, saying the curriculum reform initiative the government
was undertaking would cater for all learning needs of children without discrimination. Chairman of the Kenya Society for Deaf Children Francis Ng’ang’a said the development of the manual will bread down the communication barriers that earlier existed between parents and their deaf children. Ng’ang’a said deaf children are affected socially when they go back home as they cannot effectively communicate with their parents. He urged parents with deaf children to take them to school as currently out of 200,000 deaf children across the country only 10,000 are currently attending special and integrated schools across the country.

Heroes are empty-headed idiots, experts confirm
NEWS BRIEFS
People who carry out spur-ofthe-moment acts of heroism are empty-headed idiots, research has confirmed. While such acts of selflessness are often admired, experts have found that there is no immediate logical reason to put one’s life in danger in order to save a stranger. New data indicates that people who save others from instantaneous danger do it out of instinct, without concern for their personal safety. Despite the fact that society has grown accustomed to admiring these heroes, science shows that this condition of not thinking before one acts is a trait evident in courageous,

Man stabbed to death in Huruma A man was last night stabbed to death in a robbery in Nairobi’s Huruma estate. The victim had alighted from a matatu and was walking to his house when he was confronted by three men who tried to rob him of his valuables and cash. Police say he resisted prompting one of the attackers to stab him in the stomach and chest. He died instantly. The gang grabbed his mobile phone and other valuables before escaping on foot. This is the second such incident to happen in the area. Another man was on Tuesday night stabbed to death in an attack in Kariobangi area as he tried to save his girlfriend from a gang that was robbing her. No arrests have been made so far in both incidents even though police say they are looking for the gangs. Elsewhere, another man was shot and seriously wounded by suspected thugs in Santon estate, Nairobi. The victim is in a stable condition in hospital.
yet feather-brained individuals. “This turns out to be typical of heroes,” says one conclusion that was published by behavioural scientists in the New York Times. In a study titled “The Trick to Acting Heroically”, a team consisting of a Professor and his colleague conducted an analysis of people who were renowned for their acts of heroism. “We found that the heroes overwhelming described their actions as fast and intuitive, and virtually never as carefully reasoned,” said Professor David Rand, who headed the research.
Policy on adolescent sex to curb HIV, pregnancies The push by education experts to have character-building and sex related subjects introduced in the current Kenya education system may soon bear fruit. The government has launched a policy to address the growing numbers of teenage pregnancies, unsafe abortion, drug abuse and HIV/ Aids infections among adolescents. The health Ministry has rubbished claims in some quarters, and reiterated that the policy does not allow abortion, neither will it permit the distribution of condoms to school children. Even though it prohibits abortion, the policy promotes improvement of postabortion care. Health Principal Secretary Khadija Kassachoon said the policy was a guideline that works within the constitution. “This document lays bare the solutions to address the population that is critical in our future planning. “We will work with the Ministry of Education to offer age appropriate sex education as well as our

ministry so that adolescents can get comprehensive medical care as prescribed in the Constitution,” the PS said. The 33-page document titled: ‘The Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy” was launched Wednesday amid growing concern over indiscipline
in schools. This decision was prompted by the arrest of about 35 students who were found drinking, using and hiding bhang as well as having sex in a bus early last month. The document describes reproductive health as a state of complete physical,
mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in all matters of the reproductive system, its functions and processes. The policy does not spell clearly how it would work with the counties in addressing the concerns of youth.
Budapest railway OpeNs its dOOrs tO migraNts The main railway station in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, has opened its doors to hundreds of migrants after a two-day stand-off. But a public announcement said international trains to Western Europe were suspended “indefinitely”. Hungary’s anti-immigrant Prime Minister Viktor Orban said nobody could leave Hungary without being registered. EU rules place responsibility for assessing asylum claims on the
country where a migrant first arrives. The migrants stuck at Budapest’s Keleti station were prevented from boarding trains on Tuesday and Wednesday. Some were involved in scuffles with police. They had bought tickets after Hungary briefly appeared to abandon efforts to register migrants, allowing huge numbers to board trains to Vienna and southern Germany. It was not immediately clear why authorities decided to let the migrants enter
the station on Thursday morning. Many tried to cram into a train that was listed as destined for Munich, but tword was spreading that people would not be allowed to travel on to Germany. A message on an announcement board said international tickets would be accepted on internal trains. The number of migrants entering Europe has reached record levels, with 107,500 arriving in July alone. Germany expects to take in 800,000 migrants this year - four
times last year’s total. The surge in numbers has created tension and disagreement over EU migration policy. On Wednesday, Germany, Italy and France called for “fair distribution” of refugees throughout the EU. Italy and Greece have complained that they are overwhelmed by the numbers arriving on their shores. And while countries such as Germany are prepared to accept large numbers of asylum seekers, others are not.

economy when risks to growth were mounting. The fund’s message to the most powerful central bankers and finance ministers travelling to Ankara for a Group of 20 meeting at the weekend is that the performance of the majority of economies is again falling short of expectations at the beginning of the year. The IMF is calling for action to prevent growth from faltering and to raise the medium term performance of the world’s largest economies from the current “moderate” level. The Federal Reserve, which is considering raising US interest rates this month, was not alone in the line of the fund’s fire. In an agenda-setting note to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, the IMF said that an expected boost from lower oil prices had failed to materialise and with low inflation in all advanced economies, “monetary policy must stay accommodative to prevent real interest rates from rising prematurely”. www.ft.com

Body calls for DSTV boycott over subscription fee hike Kenyans were slapped with an over 15% rise in subscription fee for DSTV viewership by Multichoice, a move that sparked outrage among subscribers. Kenya is a key market for the South African based satellite TV provider as Kenyans love the English Premier League which they broadcast as well as other premium programme channels The Consumers Federation of Kenya (COFEK) has thus asked subscribers to boycott subscription payment for the month of September until the subscription fees are lowered or the hike is justified against the cost of the same bouquets across Africa. Since paytv competition collapsed,
monthly subscriptions have hit the roof with excuses from DSTV pegged on the rising foreign exchange rate - over a depreciating shilling. A closer look at the Premium bouquet pricing in South Africa and West Africa is 699 Rands compared to an equivalent 1206 Rands locally (at the rate of R1 to Sh7.8). Subscribers have also raised concerns over the 2015/16 EPL that has turned into a dull moment for tens of thousands whose package Supersport 3 does not contain Supersport 5 activated. Premium subscribers with ‘Walkas’ too can no longer access Supersport 5 that now airs the main EPL matches.
BOYCOTT DSTV: Kenyans took to social media to contest higher rates announced by MultiChoice for DStv subscribers after raising the subscription fee for its premium bouquet to Sh9,400 up from Sh8,200.

UAE investors affirm Kenyan tea the best in the world Kenyan tea is the best in the world, UAE investors and delegates visiting Mombasa have affirmed. Following an ongoing trade mission to the East African Region, the Dubai government’s Director of Business Development, James Bernard said the world largest tea processing plant in Dubai is majorly dependent of Kenyan tea. “Although 40 per cent of the global tea comes through our plant for processing, we
largely depend on Kenyan tea that is of the best quality and we use it to blend with other tea,” he added. Bernard said the Dubai government is currently providing the infrastructure needed for companies that have shown the potential to invest in the UAE. His sentiments come just a few months after Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed urged investors in the Gulf region to venture into the Kenyan market and
take advantage of existing and emerging opportunities. Speaking at a recent event to kick off the trade mission in Kenya, Mombasa County Trade and Industrialization Minister Mohammed Abdi said the delegation was currently holding the biggest tea auction trade center in East and Central Africa. He stressed the need for a processing plant in Kenya that would benefit local farmers by allowing them to export finished products.

Listed Real Estate developer Home Afrika has sown its Chief Executive Ng’ang’a Njoroge the door amidst losses posted in the first half of 2015. The firm’s Board Chair Lee Karuri said the directors terminated his contract without disclosing reasons why and appointed Dan Awendo as the acting Chief Executive. “We wish to advise you that the board of directors has terminated the contract of the CEO Mr Njoroge Ng’ang’a,” read a statement from Home Afrika signed by board Chairman Lee Karuri. The executive changes came at a time when the firm has been pushed into deeper losses posting a net loss of Sh 11 million in the first of 2015 compared to a net profit of Sh 42 million same
period in 2014. “The group reported a drop in revenue and the corresponding cost of sales to Sh217 million from Sh550 million and Sh219 million from Sh326 million representing a 60 percent and a 33 percent reduction respectively from a comparative period the previous year,” the management said. The firm ascertained it will achieve higher margins going forward as the higher margin properties come to market. Home Africa’s major properties comprise the multi-billion shilling Migaa, a live-incommunity in Kiambu County, a Lakeview Heights in Kisumu County and Liango in Kwale County. Comparing Instagram statistics between Kenya and Tanzania, Tanzania win hands down and with good reason.
A
s a country, Kenya is known for a myriad reasons, from being the origin of the first US black president to being a hotbed of athletic champions. When it comes to social media usage and domination in the internet world, our country’s name always pops up in this conversation thanks to Kenyans on Twitter, who have over the past few years positioned the country as a virtual giant. Unfortunately, the giant is on the verge of being brought to its knees by our neighbors Tanzania who seem to have been quietly strategizing on how to bring down Kenyans on Twitter; and they unfortunately found our weakness. Kenyans are very good at mobilizing forces for a particular cause and this is how the Kenyans on Twitter community has managed to amass a tyrannical following. However, our problem is that we get fixated on issues so much that we forget to keep up with up and coming trends. In this subject matter of social media usage for example, we got too engrossed in the Twitter platform to notice the rise of other social media tools, specifically Instagram, and here is where Tanzania got us. Comparing Instagram statistics between Kenya and Tanzania, Tanzania win hands down and with good reason. Let’s embark on a short logical journey at this juncture. You see, political leaders and entertainers are supposed to be trendsetters for their fans. The reason as to why the Kenyan online community has

not properly caught up with the Instagram fever is because our opinion leaders, who are supposed to be the early adopters influencing the rest of us to take up an innovation, have shown no serious commitment to Instagram or any other upcoming social networking site for that matter. This is unlike Tanzanian celebs who have heavily invested in Instagram, probably because they know the Twitter space belongs to Kenyans. Much has been said in defense of Kenya’s ignorance on Instagram and surprisingly, it makes sense. The argument is that Kenyans are more vocal than visual. Consequently, they opt to stick to twitter, which gives them the allowance of ranting and raving in the 120 character limit, which is considered better than Instagram which is basically a photo sharing site. At the mention of photos, you can already guess who owns Kenya’s Instagram space…the socialites of course, led by Huddah Monroe who has almost 400,000 followers, followed by her nemesis Vera Sidika who has over 150,000 followers. If you think these are a lot of follows, Tanzanian celebrity Instagram followings will have you in shock. Diamond Platnumz is only 20,000 followers shy of the 1 million mark, with his constant beef partner Ali Kiba gaining momentum with over 480,000 followers. Since Instagram is photograph sharing site, it would be a crime to not mention Tanzanian celebrities of the fairer gender with a large Instagram following, topped by singer Vanessa Mdee who currently has close to 700,000 followers. Diamond’s baby mama Zari Hassan follows closely with over 660,000 followers. With this growing use of Instagram among Tanzanians, how much longer will Kenyans on Twitter rule the African internet space?

eon island’s finest artiste Jose Chameleone of the ‘valu valu’ hit track left Uganda last night for Manhattan, New York in the united states where he is scheduled to perform from 4th through 6th at the UNAA causes festival. Since 1988, Ugandans in North America have been coming together each year in a chosen North American city. These gatherings are the largest, most persistent and the most anticipated association of Ugandans in the diaspora. The goals are to stimulate and encourage nationwide acquaintance and fellowship among members in North America, Europe and Uganda.

ecently, columnist Oyunga Pala offended many Kenyan women in his article that asserted that Kenyan women do not know how to cook. But which Kenyan women was he talking about? Definitely not the ones on Facebook! It’s true that our generation did not have the best upbringing and most of our parents did not exactly orient us to matters kitchen, but in the digital age, we actually learn more from the internet than from our parents. Many Facebook pages have been created for gossip, keeping up with each other, spreading hate messages and even stalking, but let’s take a moment to appreciate local Facebook pages built with the intention of introducing women to the art of cooking…After all, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Previously, it was difficult to make an edible meal using recipes from

popular international food sites such as ‘The Food Network’ and ‘All Recipes’ because let’s face it, more than half of the ingredients listed in recipes on these global food sites are items that we have never heard of and even pronouncing them is a challenge. Even so, Kenyan women (and a few men) have wised up and started local social media pages solely dedicated to catering for cooking related issues such as tantalizing recipes, where to get particular ingredients and advise on where to make changes for a dish gone wrong. On the two most prominent pages for Kenyan foodies (Cook Eat Kenya and Ideas on Cooking Recipes) you will find thousands of followers, mostly women seeking to acquire skills on how to keep their men hooked to their cooking, and probably surpass the famous ‘mum’s cooking is the best’ stereotype among men. Unlike other Facebook accounts
set up for the sake of amassing many subscribers so as to earn money out of advertisement and publicity services, ‘Cook Eat Kenya’ and ‘Ideas on Cooking recipes’ are strictly monitored pages, with active admins who filter abusive or non-food related posts ensuring that the pages stay clean. Apart from recipes on indigenous Africa foods, the pages also provide tutorials on making pastries, salads and snacks with a special emphasis on presentation. Even for food, the first impression matters and most of the posts on these all-thingsfood accounts are accompanied by impressively garnished servings that more often than not get lazy ladies on their feet and into the kitchen. Are you tired of feeding your family fries and pizza day in day out? Join these two food pages promptly. Your family’s taste buds will be utterly grateful.

The ceremony that was to be presided over by the president at 3pm did not materialize in what sources privy to state house say was the unavailability of the head of state due to his tight schedule. Actors, actresses, musicians and other entertainment industry players who showed up for the function were greatly disappointed and demanded that the theatre be commissioned by any other available government official as the artistes who use the theatre to showcase their art needed to get back to work. he newly appointed Kisumu county police commandant Joseph Limo has called on Students of Maseno University who have in the past kept a record of violence to shun the same. The students are known to often go on the rampage during and after their student’s council elections. The commandant said that there should not be a waste of time in rioting and chases that involve the students and the police seeing as the students are the future leaders. He gave a stern warning saying that action would be taken on anyone who would be caught engaging in criminal activities or hooliganism, rioting, bullying and vandalism in the elections that are scheduled for the month of October.

t is that time of the year when schools are re-opening for semester three, and in addition to the continuing lot, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology opened its doors to more than 2000 freshmen. The continuing students have thus raised the red flag complaining about the accommodation situation saying that the new hostels and rentals are expensive. The management had promised them a reduction on the same but nothing much seems to have been done. This confusion has since led to the frustrations of many a first year students as they have been unable to find a place to settle and call home for the next academic year. The JKUAT administration should move fast to sort this crisis as soon as possible.

UoN stUdeNt loses fee iN sport gamble Early this week, a third year student of the University of Nairobi lost 40,000 shillings in a ‘Sports Pesa’ bet. The student lost the bet after Manchester united lost to Swansea in a heated match. Gilbert Okinyi was set to win 60,000 shillings had his team won. In the past one-year many students have reported cases of losing their school fees to the betting site, as luck has not been on their side. This student was attracted to the betting game seeing as his friend had previously won 50,000 shillings. Gilbert however in a bid to regain his fee, requested the CEO ‘sport pesa’ to refund at least part of the money to aid with his registration for the new semester at the university. Even though betting sites have stringent rules, terms and conditions, let’s hope that his plea will be heard.
hat does your job as a motivational speaker, writer and a life coach entail? Being a public motivational speaker and life coach, my focus is on inspiring lives and changing organizations through my frequent personal and organizational development programmes. How many hours do you work in a day? My working hours differ from time to time depending on what each day brings. But in estimate I work a minimum of five hours a day. What qualifications do you need for your job? Hahahaha, I believe passion and being knowledgeable qualifies one to be a motivational speaker and author though one needs to be well versed in languages and should be an extrovert. Was this your dream career? Proudly yes, speaking is the engine in me. How did you start out? During my undergraduate when I was elected a student leader, this exposed me to several forums within student’s activities and university management talks. That is when I started getting speaking engagements here and there… and the rest became a story. What achievements have you had so far?
Success is never ending but at times you have to gauge your effect… with confidence I can say I have inspired countless lives and organizations to achieve great results becoming great from good. Being an author, I have written two books though they are yet to be published. Any challenges you have experienced so far? Yes I face challenges, but the greatest one has always been changing the world more than it changes me. But the key to life is accepting challenges because once someone stops doing this, he’s dead. Does your job interfere with your social life? Mmmmh not really, I guess it’s my social life that interferes with my job than the converse. What is the best part of your job? Networking makes this job tick. What is the worst part of your job? Inspiring and challenging people who later become successful than you are. Any advice for aspiring motivational speakers? No profession is better than the other, it’s up to you to bring up the profession that is all that matters… Do you have Passion and believe in yourself to being an inspiration through speaking? Then refer to my third answer on the qualification quiz above to join the inspiration world.

UN confirms Kenya ready for a nuclear power program Kenya can now move forward with its plans to develop a nuclear power program, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations’ nuclear power watchdog, has said. The Agency has confirmed that the country has the necessary tools to develop its nuclear power infrastructure, a move that will not only drive down the cost of electricity but also reduce the frequency of blackouts and power rationing. The government had asked the IAEA to do an infrastructure review and consult on whether the plans were feasible. Some ten experts were tasked with reviewing Kenya’s infrastructure readiness in an eight-day inspection of the country. They made recommendations for improvement and later concluded that Kenya was “moving in the right direction.” Ochilo Ayacko, Executive Chairman and CEO of the Kenya Nuclear Energy Board (KNEB), noted that Kenya was
AfDB to work on driving down power prices in Africa The African Development Bank (AfDB) is working towards driving down the cost of power in Africa. The lender has announced that it will focus on tackling Africa’s chronic power shortages to try to unlock its economic potential. The move is also aimed at putting an end to the continent’s fluctuations in commodity prices, Reuters reports. SubSaharan Africa, which has a population almost 1 billion people, consumes nearly as much power as Spain, which is home to only 47 million consumers. This is due to poor generating capacity and limited transmission networks, says Reuters. It has also been revealed that two out of every three Africans have no access to electricity.

Companies make diesel out of thin air
Two energy producing companies have developed a system that can create diesel by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and turning it into diesel. German company Sunfire produced its first batches of what experts are calling “e-diesel” in April. The country’s Federal Minister of Education and Research, Johanna Wanka, has confirmed that vehicles can run on the fuel. Meanwhile, Canadian company, Carbon Engineering recently built a pilot plant that will produce 500 litres of diesel a day. Pending regulations, Sunfire officials say that their fuel will be slightly cheaper than what is currently available in the market.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 Even though your heart may want to soar into the clouds, you’ll find that there’s a stable side to the equation that’s working to keep things in perspective. You might want to consider making a greater commitment to someone you love. You’re of a sound and solid mind to do so now. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 The engagements in your social calendar are likely stacking up to the point of absurdity, Aries. Make sure you schedule some time for yourself somewhere in there. Today you’re choosy about your companions. Feel free to say no to people you’d simply rather not see.

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 Just because your heart is feeling extra generous now doesn’t mean that you need to send flowers to everyone you know, Taurus. On a day like this you should channel all your incredible love and affection to one special person. Help him or her feel like an important part of your life. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 You may be confused by your heart, Gemini. It may be extremely frustrating when you can’t keep a tight rein on your emotions. This internal conflict is a signal that there’s a lesson to learn. Perhaps your heart knows something that your conscious mind hasn’t yet realized. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 A missed communication - or miscommunication - with a romantic partner could find you waiting in the wrong place, Cancer. If you’re planning to get together with someone special tonight, make sure you get the full details of the location, including the exact address, cross street, and driving directions. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 You were probably born with talent, but perhaps you don’t treat it with as much respect as someone endowed with only a fraction of your natural ability. Look at your tools realistically and know that you have the power to accomplish a great deal when you put your creative nature into high gear. VIRGO Aug 23-Sep 21 Perhaps you’ve been waiting for a reply, thinking that this person has blown you off. Maybe this person doesn’t understand the question you’re trying to ask. When it comes to matters of love and romance, you’re going to have to spell things out. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 You feel reprimanded because of the way you reacted to a situation that came out differently than you’d hoped. If the person you’re dealing with doesn’t understand your actions, then this is probably more a function of their own baggage and not yours. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 If you can’t see it, then work on adjusting your attitude. Your inner state is likely what needs to be fixed, not the world around you. If you can shift to a light, understanding mood, you’ll receive the laughter and romance that are sure to brighten your day. SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21 It’s time to step up to the plate and take responsibility for the things you want to have happen, Sagittarius. It’s one thing to talk about great visions and dreams, but the bottom line is that they’ll continue to remain abstract concepts unless you work to develop them into something solid and tangible.

YOURSAY So many public policies without practice
Have public policies become a paradox characterized by enormous rhetoric from institutions and organizations involved in biodiversity information generation and implementation with very little efforts to substantiate their impacts? This appears
to be the case for policies in sub-Sahara Africa. Different institutions have explicitly declared their commitments in creating conservation policies; legislation, institutions and international agreements on biodiversity, which is, quite a remarkable
step. However, the impacts of these policies are yet to be felt, putting into consideration the fact that we are living in the wake of catastrophic climate change phenomena. —African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS)
KNH deplorable, state not serious on health News of stranded cancer patients at Kenya’s largest referral hospital is shocking even though it is not the first time such an occurrence happened. With the health functions almost fully devolved, the government
ought to give serious attention to facilities at Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, the only two medical facilities it is managing. And with the many billions the ministry of health is allocated
every year, it is shocking to see the government saying it has not been able to buy an equipment worth Sh200 million. — Leonard Juma, Kawangware

For purposes of acting in the letter and spirit of devolution, MCAs in county assemblies should debate in vernacular or predominant languages spoken in various counties. It is illogical for the Ward Reps to debate in English and Kiswahili, yet they are making by-laws which only affect their fiefdoms. One of the key objectives of devolution is to encourage diversity, therefore, forcing County

Helb faulty systems discourage loan repayment Any attempt to pay back money owed to an organisation should always be a welcome move. But not for the Higher Education Loans Board. For the last three days, I have visited Helb offices, filled forms and waited to get feedback on the repayment schedule. But after waiting for an average of one hour every day, the information comes that the systems
are down and we should be prepared to wait indefinitely as things get fixed. Frustrated, I walk away. For an institution that has often complained of being underfunded, Helb should be very keen not to discourage people from repaying their loans. —Freddie Mcobuya, Nairobi
We are paying way too much for way too less For a long time now, we have paid Multichoice Kenya a lot of money in return for very little value. The subscription fee we pay in Kenya is much higher as compared to what other African states pay for the same bouquets. In addition to this, we are not getting value for money as most movies, series and documentaries are repeated. We must unite once and for all and reclaim control of what we
want to watch and at what cost. We are a nation of English Premier League lovers and may not be able to survive too long without DSTV but monopoly should not make us slaves. Even if it means a one month boycott, let us do it, Multichoice will definitely feel the pinch and review the rates. — Suffocate Mkenya, Nairobi

SPORTS BRIEFS McIlroy handed place in European tour final series Rory McIlroy has been given a special exemption by the European Tour to play in the season-ending Final Series. An ankle injury has curtailed the world number one’s season to the extent he would not meet the 13-event Race to Dubai qualification standard. With the Northern Irishman leading the rankings, Tour officials have used their discretion to ensure the 26-year-old can compete in the season finale. McIlroy missed the Scottish Open, The Open and the Bridgestone Invitational. All three events would have counted towards the qualifying criteria. McIlroy ruptured an ankle ligament playing football with friends in July After discussions with the European Tour, he has committed to play a further three events to take his tally to 12. European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley said he had taken the decision “very seriously”.
Tribunal directs bowling association to include Nyaga in Zambia AST squad Kenya Bowling Federation has been ordered to include Njeru Nyaga in the Kenyan squad for the Africa States Tournament (AST) set to be held from September 11-19 in Lusaka, Zambia. Nyaga moved to Sports Dispute Tribunal after he learnt of his exclusion from the squad despite
coming top during the trials to AST, one of the most prestigious international lawn bowls competitions in the continent Interestingly, the ruling was not read but passed through a word of mouth to Nyaga. “We are supposed to make a ruling today but unfortunately the ruling is not
typed due to some technicalities,” said one of the Tribunal member. “However this Tribunal finds the selection process was not well laid out and the tribunal was not satisfied by the explanation. We therefore direct Kenya Bowling Federation to incorporate you to the Zambia’s AST squad.”
Kenya will compete for the top prize against host Zambia, South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Malawi. The tournament is expected to attract approximately 100 bowlers who will compete in four categories that include Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours.
Handball team locked out of Kasarani With just a few days before the national men and women’s handball teams depart for Congo Brazzaville African Games, the national outfits were kicked out of their training venue at Moi Sports Center Kasarani with the facility reserved for a cooperate meeting.Kasarani, the standard indoor facility has been booked for a private function by a local Telecommunication company forcing the team to relocate to the squeezed Annex which is measuring which they share with the JUDO team, also preparing for the same games. Handball team is expected to depart next Monday for Congo and while the last week is very crucial in their preps, the team which is led by Nairobi Water women’s handball club head coach Jack Ochieng is now forced to use half of the space at the Annex which is in poor state. Despite the setbacks, the Kenyan side which crashed out at the quarterfinals in the last edition held in Maputo in Mozambique is still upbeat they will make it to the podium. “At this stage, we should be tightening on all the loose ends, but as it stands, we have not had the ample time to cage all the departments,” coughed the coach.
I turned down return to AC Milan - Zlatan
Paris St-Germain forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic has claimed that he turned down a return to Italian giants AC Milan in the transfer window. The 33-year-old has won league titles at Ajax, Inter Milan, Barcelona and PSG and helped Milan win Serie A in 2011. The Sweden international was linked with other clubs, including Arsenal, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray. “I said from the beginning that I am staying at PSG,” said Ibrahimovic. “I’m happy there.” He added: “It was concrete from [AC Milan’s] side and they showed great interest. “I take it as a compliment that there is still interest in me. It means I’m still performing. I take it as positive.”

Sum, Birech charged for Zurich redemption The dust has barely settled after the Beijing Worlds but Eunice Sum is among star athletes with an early opportunity to respond after losing her women’s 800m world title last week at the first 2015 IAAF Diamond League final in Zurich on Thursday. Sum finished in the bronze position during her defence after soaring to the global title in Moscow in 2013
and will be among the attractions at the Weltklasse meeting where, the first 16 Diamond Race champions of 2015 will be crowned. The Commonwealth and African two-lap champion and shot putter Christina Schwanitz have won four out of six Diamond League clashes this season, while long jumper Tianna Bartoletta has three wins to her name, her points tally bolstered

by second-place finishes in New York and Monaco. All three have a lead of eight points or more, meaning that they only need to compete in Zurich in order to claim the circuit honours to get their hands on a $40,000 cash prize and the spectacular Diamond Trophy. For Sum, it will be a third successive Diamond Race victory in a row having led the charts in 2013 and last year and to sign off with victory will send a strong message of intent ahead of next year’s Rio 2016 Olympics Games to Belarusian Marina Arzamasova and Canada’s Pan American Games champion Melissa Bishop who beat her to the top two medals in Beijing. Fresh from three-peating as world men 1500m champion, Asbel Kiprop who is third in his specialty’s Diamond Race will be confident of adding the circuit title he has won only once in his career after outgunning Djibouti’s Continental Champion, Ayanleh Suleiman and
former Commonwealth Games titleholder, Silas Kiplagat who are two points ahead in the standings. Victory in the final counts for double the points, eight and a win will give Kiprop who is gunning for a second Olympics title next summer the perfect end to an outstanding season after Souleiman who was injured in Beijing beat him to the gold at the African and Continental championships last year. African titleholder, Jairus Birech, the circuit leader in the men 3000m steeplechase is smarting after being forced down the order to fourth and out of the medals in Beijing and will turn to his speed to clinch a second successive Diamond Race crown. After being taken to school by compatriot Almaz Ayana in the women 5000m final, Ethiopia’s 1500m champion Genzebe Dibaba is another out to stamp her supremacy in Zurich. Ulinzi Stars celebrate scoring a goal during their SPL match against Mathare United in a previous encounter last.
Ulinzi halt Gor’s early KPL title celebrations Gor Mahia will have to wait a little longer to lift their third consecutive Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title after Ulinzi Stars put a stop to their early title celebrations following their 2-0 win over Western Stima yesterday in Kisumu. Gor who only need one win may still be declared champions if they manage to force at least a draw against Ulinzi when the two top team meet next week after the international break
John Makwata who scored in Ulinzi’s solitary goal against Stima in their first leg encounter didn’t deem to stop breaking the powerless backline when he found the target once again in yesterday’s 2-0 win in Kisumu, a win that revived Ulinzi’s confidence after they lost their East Africa Military Games title to Rwanda last week in Uganda. The win took their points tally to 47, 15 less than K’Ogalo and any slip up by the Soldiers
in next Sunday’s match will hand Frank Nuttal the title with five matches to go. Makwata took his goals tally to 11, scoring from the spot after Joash Onyango handled the ball inside the box in the 59th minute. Enos Ohieng added Ulinzi’s second in the 79th minute. This was a fourth win for Ulinzi against Western Stima. Ulinzi are yet to lose a match in their last six league fixtures.
Bid to block Springboks from Rugby World Cup fails
The squad named by the South Africa rugby coach, Heyneke Meyer, was welcomed by the Congress of South African Trade Unions as a positive step.
A legal attempt to block South Africa’s national rugby team from flying to the UK to play in the Rugby World Cup in a row over racial discriminations has failed. A judge in Pretoria dismissed an opposition political party’s bid to block the Springboks over a perceived lack of black players. Nine non-white players have been named in the 31-man Springbok squad. Rugby has historically been a white-dominated sport in South Africa, where apartheid ended in 1994. Judge Ntendeya Mavundla said the court did not have the power to hear the case brought by The Agency for New Agenda (ANA), a small party made up of disgruntled members of the governing African National
Congress (ANC). The ANA had demanded that the passports of Springbok players and coaching staff be confiscated to prevent them from travelling to the six-week tournament, due to be held in England and Wales from 18 September. Despite dismissing the request, Judge Mavundla criticised the “snail’s pace” of racial transformation in sport in South Africa. Rugby became a symbol of national reconciliation when South Africa’s first black President Nelson Mandela famously donned the Springboks jersey at the 1995 World Cup final in Johannesburg. However, it has since become dogged by controversy over alleged racism and some black people say they will not support the team at this year’s World Cup.

Kenya in solid start with 3-1 win over Algeria
enya came from a set down to beat Algeria 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-15, and 25-23) on day one of the African Games women’s Volleyball Pool B match in Brazzaville, Congo. The Kenyan women volleyball ‘Team B’ side survived a scare from the North Africans in the match that lasted 126 minutes when they surprised fans at Henry Elende Hall, coming from a set down having surrendered the opening set 23-25 only to turn tables in the last three sets. The fourth set was also close-fought for the young and inexperienced Kenyan side which only has two players with exposure at such competitions after Algeria came to within a point
having trailed 19-24 to 23-24 only for the Kenyan side to grab the set and register their first win. Kenya who next play Cameroon are expected to work even harder in their second match against the physical West Africans. This was a sixth win for Kenya against Algeria this year having met twice at the African Nations championship in Nairobi where the local girls beat Algeria, 2012 Olympic representatives to win a record ninth African title; a meeting at the FIVB World Grand Prix and Monday’s win over another Algerian side in Japan in the ongoing FIVB world Cup. Kenya Prisons duo of Leonida Kasaya led the Kenyan scorers
with 17 points followed by Edith Wisa with 12. Algeria’s outside hitter Safia Boukhaima contributed 14. In another match Cape Verde came from a set behind to clinch exciting five set victory over battling Seychelles 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 18-25, 25-23, 1512) within 128 minutes of a Pool B game while Ghana overpowered hosts Congo in straight sets (25-11, 25-20, 25-21). Nigeria needed only 74 minutes to overwhelm Mozambique 3-0 (25-19, 25-21 and 25-21). The competition features 12 teams divided into 2 pools of 6, where each Pool play a round robin tournament to determine the top 2 teams who qualify to the semifinal.
