City politician wanted by police over incitement talk P

olice are looking for a Nairobi politician who has been accused of incitement. Former Youth Enterprise Fund board member Clement Ayungo has been summoned to report to the nearest police station for questioning over allegations of hate speech. The summon follows a video clip shared on social which showed the Ruaraka parliamentary seat aspirant saying he would lead protests if elections are rigged against Cord leader Raila Odinga. Police want him to record a statement over the remarks.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet says the politician will be questioned over the comments which he termed as “hate speech”. In the video clip that has since gone viral, Mr Ayungo is seen addressing a crowd in what appears to be a political function mainly attended by youths in Ruaraka. “We will start with burning of cars at Ruaraka and then go to fight President Uhuru Kenyatta and his army. We are prepared for this election and Raila should not come telling us that he has lost, because CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 he must win,” Ayungo stated in the video.

City politician wanted by police over incitement From Page 1 “He should immediately report to the nearest police station for questioning,” Boinnet said in the directive issued today morning. But Eliud Owalo who is eying the Kibra seat claims that Ayungo has already arrested and is being detained at a police station in Kisumu. In a Facebook post, Owalo said he had “received numerous distress calls from ODM supporters from far and wide that one of the party’s strongest aspirants for the Ruaraka parliamentary seat Mr Jim Clement Ayungo has been missing for two days with some reports indicating that he is being held in police custody in Kisumu.” “I wish to take this early opportunity to strongly condemn the illegal detention of Mr Ayungo by police and call for his immediate and unconditional release.” The claims could not be independently verified but Police Headquarters has denied that Ayungo is being detained at any station. His remarks are seen as potential for causing chaos in the country that experienced ethnic violence triggered by a disputed presidential election held in December 2007 when Odinga accused then incumbent President Mwai Kibaki of stealing the vote. More than 1,000 people were killed and over 600,000 others

Job evaluation won’t result in pay cuts, Govt assures The government has maintained that all civil servants must undergo the job evaluation exercise and its finding implemented despite opposition from a cross-section of its employees. Head of public service Joseph Kinyua also upheld that they will be adopting a management based approach in all state departments to strengthen the competence and improve performance and service delivery. he also sought to assure the civil servants that the exercise will not result in pay cuts or job losses saying it is aimed at bridging the huge disparities between highest and lowest earners. But the Civil Servants Union have joined doctors and nurses in opposing the exercise by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) accusing the State of failing to consult them. They want SRC to stop the exercise and move with speed to initiate the process for a Collective Bargain Agreement to harmonise their pay with the proposed salaries of teachers. “To ensure competency in our public service we must conduct a review of all our employees. We are not ready to stop what we started. Those opposed

should stop worrying of any job losses,” said Mr Kinyua. The salaries team released a report that assessed the country’s more than 600,000 public servants’ jobs and which seeks to, among other things, bridge the gap between the highest and lowest paid workers. Currently, there are huge disparities in the remuneration of public servants, with employees in some state corporations, county governments and independent and constitutional commissions earning more than their counterparts in the civil service despite possessing the same skills and qualifications. “This is what the tax payers will expect the agencies like SRC, Public Service Commission and other such agencies to bear in mind to ensure we also develop the capacity of the public officers to be effective in the delivery of their duties,” he added. Mr Kinyua urged all government agencies to invest in strategies that boost productivity and performance. He said Kenya needs to emulate countries like Malaysia that have developed such programmes. @ wilson_x254

CS Kaimenyi pleads with Kenyans to name and shame land grabbers Kenyans have been challenged to name, shame and report all land grabbers to relevant authorities instead of keeping quiet. Lands Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi said complaining about rampant land grabbing in the country without taking any action is only compounding the problem and not providing a solution. “Talking about land grabbers and doing nothing about is not the solution. If you know a land grabber and do nothing about it then you are an accomplice. Report all cases to relevant authorities so that investigations can be done,” Prof Kaimenyi told the audience during today’s State House Land summit in Nairobi. He said corruption is rife on matters of land because the public condones it then complains later. In his speech clarifying on various land issues in the country, the Cabinet Secretary said the government has issued 2.4 million title deeds in the last three years at a cost of Sh4.46 billion. He also stated that a total of 672 schools have been issued with title deeds, a move he said is aimed at cushioning them against land grabbers.

To tackle corruption at the land ministry, Kaimenyi said most of the services have now been digitized hence no much paper work that largely encourage corruption. He said the ministry has invited the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to audit all its systems to eliminate malpractices that may lead to corruption. “We are working with all relevant agencies to make sure that corruption is discouraged at every level within the lands ministry,” Prof Kaimenyi said. According to the CS, 80 percent of the services at the ministry have been digitized and that people are now getting results of land searches immediately as opposed to waiting for three days as was the case before. He however did not give candid details on the progress on the implementation of the Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations on land and instead only said that the ministry has developed the Investigation and Adjudication of Historical Land Injustices Bill 2015 that will be used to address the historical land injustices. National Lands Commission (NLC)

chairman Mohamed Swazuri said no one is so powerful that cannot be prosecuted if found to have grabbed land. “No one is powerful in this country that he cannot be prosecuted, nobody has a right to grab land. The constitution protects everyone under it whether powerful or not,” Swazuri said. Swazuri said so far a total of 4,000 title deeds have been revoked and encouraged members of the public to report any case of land injustice to the ministry and the commission for investigations. “Where people have raised issues with us on historical land injustice, we have moved in and provided solutions,” Swazuri said. He warned that any public land illegally allocated to individuals will be revoked and the land repossessed. Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero decried increased land grabbing in the city saying the practice is even at the highest level of government. Kidero blamed courts for dragging in solving land matters thereby giving land grabbers courage to continue with the vice. @sam_x254

President warns against hate talk

President Uhuru Kenyatta has warned politicians against spreading hatred among Kenyans ahead of next year’s General Election and instead debate on real issues. In a statement State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu said those found committing the offence will be brought to book. “The President has been emphasizing that politicians must watch their tongues,” he cautioned. “Incitement in this season is the last thing we want.” He revealed that the President has asked law

enforcement agencies to act firmly on those who will be found spreading hate speech. Esipisu said the government will do everything to ensure the country does not slide back to its dark days during the 2007/2008 post-election violence due to political differences. “We have been on this road before and we do not want to return there. There will be a robust response in terms of safeguarding our peace and stability and in terms of ensuring that hate mongers and hate speech experts do

Motorists oppose plans to introduce toll stations The Motorists Association of Kenya has opposed a plan by the government to introduce toll station on five highways in the country. The association’s chairman Peter Murima said they will not accept such a move by the government as it amounts to double taxation. “We are already paying taxes and introduction of any other payment will not be accepted by motorists, that is double taxation coming from the government and it’s unconstitutional,” Murima said at a press conference in Nairobi on Sunday. The government intends to introduce toll stations on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit highway, Thika Road, Nairobi Southern bypass and a section of Nyali bridge in Mombasa. “The government through the Kenya National Highways Authority intends to re-introduce retrogressive and unconstitutional toll. It is unjustifiable, unacceptable and absurd. Putting toll booths on already complete roads is a big no and motorists will never allow that to happen,” Murima vowed. Murima said the Motorists Association of Kenya has even turned down an invitation to attend a two-day investor conference in order to register their displeasure with the government’s move. The conference is expected to bring together government officials and private investors to discuss details of the planned tolling. @sam_x254

Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu is tomorrow morning expected to table the final audit report of the ministry to the senate health committee. The final report will either discredit or confirm an earlier draft report that indicated the ministry lost Sh5 billion through corruption on various deals. Mailu is expected to table the report before the committee chaired by Migori senator Wilfred Machage and also specify action to be taken on those who will be found culpable of swindling taxpayers’ money. Last week, Mailu said he will only act on individuals mentioned in the report after getting final audit report. Machage told the CS to report to the senate without failure and present the final report that the committee will subsequently table before the senate. “I urge you CS not be absent on Tuesday, present to us the final report and tell us whether Kenyans lost money or not. I have a lot of questions from senators to answer and therefore the report will be very important to us,” Machage said. Mailu and his Principal Secretary Nicholas Muraguri have so far denied that the ministry lost Sh5 billion. The CS has said that only Sh3.1 billion was subjected to the audit and the final details will be known tomorrow. Both the CS and the PS have accused the auditor Bernard Muchere of leaking an internal report to the media without giving the ministry a chance to respond to the questions raised. A team of auditors from the treasury were expected to complete the audit on Friday last week and present the final document to the Cabinet Secretary. “The auditors are working on the report and they said they will present it to me on Friday, will look at it and present it to you on Tuesday (tomorrow),” Mailu said last week. @sam_x254

Authority now wants more powers to rein in rogue contractors The National Construction Authority (NCA) wants the law amended to give it prosecutorial powers to rein on rogue developers and corrupt contractors. The authority says the act that established it does not give it express powers to deal with unscrupulous construction entities that have continually endangered the lives of Kenyans. In an interview with X news, National Construction Authority (NCA) Chairman Mr. Steven Oundo urged parliament to urgently consider amending the law to give the Authority the teeth to bite and prevent any further loss of lives because of unfit structures. “It is within our mandate to issue a stop notice. However, we do not have powers to arrest. We usually forward the details of the stop notice to relevant authorities that have the mandate to prosecute,” Oundo said. “If we had the powers to arrest and prosecute; cases of people losing their lives could be unheard off,” he explained. The Chairman concerns comes in the wake of a collapse of a 10-storey building in Kisii town, which has so far claimed the lives of nine people and others injured. On Saturday, two more male bodies were retrieved from the debris by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) emergency team. Details have emerged that a notice to stop further construction was issued twice to the developer of the collapsed building but was ignored. Mr. Oundo cited poor staffing and lack of prosecutorial powers as major factors hindering the Authority from discharging its mandate effectively. He questioned how the developer went on to raise the building to a 10 storey building while the initial approval for the construction was for five floors. “The initial permission of raising this building allowed the construction to go up to fifth floor but the developer decided to go beyond. When we noticed, we gave out the first stop order which he ignored followed by a second one which was equally ignored,” the Chairman lamented. “NCA does not just issue a stop notice for the sake of it, we do it after making some considerations which we urge developers to adhere to,” he added. In a separate interview, the Secretary National Building Inspectorate in the Ministry of Housing, Qs. Moses Nyakiongora said it was regrettable for lives to be lost despite the fact that sufficient measures and guidelines have been put in place to ensure that developers and contractors adhere to set guidelines when setting up structures. Nyakiongora disclosed that his department has done a national house audit with 4, 690 houses having so far been inspected in Nairobi where some 640 houses have been found unfit for human occupation. The secretary held that the government had put in place plans to ensure that storey buildings across the country were inspected with those that do not meet standards being brought down. “We began with Nairobi and as we speak 4690 houses have been inspected out of which 640 have been recommended for demolition. Thirty four of those declared unfit have already been brought down and the process is still ongoing,” Nyakiongora told X news. @hillary_x254

Stop harassing minorities, Trump tells his supporters

US President-elect Donald Trump has told his supporters to stop harassing minorities. In his first televised sit-down interview since becoming President-elect last week, Trump said he was saddened to hear that minorities like Latinos and Muslims are facing harassment from his own supporters. “I am so saddened to hear that,” Trump told CBS’ Lesley Stahl on “60 Minutes”. “And I say, ‘Stop it.’ If it…if it helps, I will say this, and I will say right to the cameras: ‘Stop it.’” His supporters are said to have written racist slogans or chanted degrading messages, particularly in schools. And Mr Trump’s intervention came as a powerful appeal to a nation ripped apart by the divisive 2016 campaign. Trump’s election has left Democrats angry and many minorities fearful about the future. Yet Trump also criticized the protests that have broken out in cities across the United States since his defeat of Hillary Clinton on Wednesday. Trump said he’s seen “a very small amount”, including “one or two instances”, of racial slurs being directed at minorities, particularly in largely white schools, since his election. “I would say don’t do it, that’s terrible, because I’m going to bring this country together,” Trump said. As for anti-Trump protests, Trump said, “I think it’s horrible if that’s happening. I think it’s built up by the press because, frankly, they’ll take every single little incident that they can find in this country, which could’ve been there before. If I weren’t even around doing this, and they’ll make into an event because that’s the way the press is.”

Ditching the Electoral College

Trump won more electoral votes than Clinton, but he didn’t win the popular vote. Still, he says, he favors ditching the Electoral College and handing the presidency to the winner of the popular vote. “I’m not going to change my mind just because I won. But I would rather see it where you went with simple votes. you know, you get 100 million votes and somebody else gets 90 million votes and you win. There’s a reason for doing this because it brings all the states into play,” he said.

FBI review

In the wide-ranging interview Trump also said he’s still deciding whether to ask FBI Director

James Comey for his resignation. Trump demurred when asked about his plans for Comey, whose decision to end the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server was widely panned by Republicans. “I think that I would rather not comment on that yet,” Trump said. “I haven’t made up my mind. I respect him a lot. I respect the FBI a lot. There’s been a lot of leaking, there’s no question about that. But I would certainly like to talk to him.” He admitted he isn’t sure about Comey’s future. “I’d want to see, you know, he may have had very good reasons for doing what he did,” Trump said. Comey has more than six years to go in his ten-year term. Trump also balked when asked whether he’d carry out his campaign pledge to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Clinton. He said Clinton “did some bad things” and that he’s “going to think about it” but that he is more eager to focus on health care, immigration

and other policy matters. “I don’t want to hurt them,” Trump said of the Clintons, noting he’d spoken to both Hillary and Bill Clinton since his victory. “They’re good people. I don’t want to hurt them. And I will give you a very, very good and definitive answer the next time we do ‘60 Minutes’ together,’” he said. Hillary Clinton has cited Comey’s latecampaign season disclosures as a reason for her loss. The former secretary of state told donors in a conference call Saturday that Comey delivered a double whammy to her candidacy in the final days of the campaign by taking another look at emails related to Clinton’s private server before abruptly saying he found no wrongdoing. In the interview, Trump also discussed lobbyists’ role in his transition and the future of the Trump business brand. And he waded into how abortion and gun rights would be affected by his Supreme Court nominations.

US admits Somalia strike killed allies

An airstrike in Somalia that the US said had targeted al-Shabab actually killed 10 members of an allied local militia, US media report, quoting an unpublished Pentagon investigation. The US says it carried out the September strike to protect Puntland forces who came under fire during an operation against

al-Shabab militants. The strike sparked anti-American protests among local communities. The Somali army said the dead were civilians and Galmudug regional forces. The US provides military support to Somalia in its fight against al-Shabab, an alQaeda affiliate, which is waging an armed insurgency in the

country. After the strike, officials in Galmadug accused rivals authorities in Puntland of feeding the US military false intelligence to trick them into launching the strike that killed its soldiers. Puntland and Galmadug, both semi-autonomous regions, have been fighting each other for decades over territorial disputes.

The US has denied that any civilians were killed in the attack. “If we had known who they were, we would have done everything we could to prevent it,” an unnamed US military official told the Washington Post, discussing the unpublished report, which has also been seen by Reuters news agency.

Alteo posts Sh2 billion profit as Mumias fights to stay afloat

Alteo Ltd, a Mauritius sugar producer with operations in Kenya and Tanzania, has posted a pre-tax profit of 721.5 million rupees (Sh2.1 billion), representing an 88 per cent in its first quarter. The jump was helped by larger sales volumes and improved sugar prices. The announcement comes at a time when declining production in major sugar producing countries has seen the sugar sector suffer from a deficit that has had a positive effect on global sugar prices and the Comesa region. Mumias Sugar Director, Elizabeth Kyengo said in an earlier statement that the price of sugar locally has increased and is forecast to remain stable. She said Kenya has negotiated a two-year extension of the Comesa safeguards due to expire in February 2019. Alteo is the largest sugar miller in Mauritius with interests in property development and hotels. The company said in a statement on Monday that its earnings were also boosted by gains on disposal of land amounting to 47 million rupees (Sh133.7 million). Group revenue rose to 2.64 billion rupees (Sh7.51 billion) from 1.99 billion rupees (Sh5.66 billion) a year earlier. The sugar miller said it expected better results from its Kenyan and Tanzanian

NACC in move to reduce HIV transmissions by 90 per cent MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2016

The National Aids Control Council (NACC) has today launched an action plan in an effort aimed at reducing new HIV/AIDS transmission by up to 90 per cent over the next three years. Speaking during the official launch of the 2016/2020 Action Plan, NACC National Director, Dr. Nduku Kilonzo said the move is in line with the global vision 2030 blueprint of eradicating HIV/AIDS. “The launch of today’s action plan marks an important milestone as we join other stakeholders across the planet in ensuring a free HIV/AIDS generation as per the vision 2030 set goals,” she said. She added that the plan is a practical tool for designing actions aimed at increasing multi-sectorial involvement to challenge and reduce HIV/AIDS related stigma, shame, denial, discrimination, inaction and mis-action that increases HIV/AIDS infections and its impacts at all levels. Among other key highlights, the plan seeks at utilizing faith-based communities’ reach and influence to prevent new HIV infections, reduce stigma associated with HIV, to improve the quality of life of people living with HIV by providing essential healthcare services as well as supporting and strengthening service delivery as offered through faith based communities. The plan will further improve coordination and reporting mechanisms of the HIV response within the faith sector. It comes to supplement other efforts in place, which have seen HIV/AIDS infection drop by up to 19 per cent between 2013 and 2015, according to statistics done by NACC. The data shows that 97 per cent of adolescents get infected on a daily basis, a trend the NACC described as worrying and termed as a threat to the economy, given that youth represent the largest segment of the labour market. During the period under review, 14 counties increased new HIV infections by 50 per cent with Nairobi and Mombasa alone accounting for 10 per

Dr. Kilonzo said 90 per cent of recorded victims of the disease are currently

undergoing treatment and the plan will reach 100 per cent of patients upon the end of the said period. She said that a lack of finances and stigmatization among youth are impediments to achieving their set goals, but urged religious leaders to up their game to see the realization of the set

goals. During the two year period between 2013 and 2015, HIV/AIDS has reportedly claimed over 423,000 lives, out of which 4,000 are adults. @enock_x254

Outering Road to boost uptake of 1,272 HFDI housing units

HF Group’s property development subsidiary, HFDI foresees a huge uptake in housing units of its biggest real estate project, Komarock Heights, on completion of the Sh8.2 billion Outering Road project. The ongoing expansion of the 64-kilometre road, scheduled for completion in September 2017, will improve accessibility to 1,272 apartments that would be developed by the company over the next few years. Already the property development arm has presold 15 percent of 480-units in Phase 1 expected to be complete by March 2017. “We anticipate the uptake of the housing units to increase with the improved accessibility through the ongoing expansion of Outering Road,” said HFDI Executive Director, James Karanja. Karanja ruled out the possibility of hiking the price of the housing units usually associated with developing areas. “The project prices will remain within the current marketed range as we maintain our goal of providing affordable housing,” added Karanja. Phase 1 of the Sh7.5 billion project comprises a mix of two and three bedroomed units totaling 480 apartments targeting the largely inclusive middle income population. The project, whose ground breaking was presided by President Uhuru Kenyatta in August 2015, is one of a kind in Eastlands, with passenger lifts in each apartment block, a children’s play area, borehole water and dedicated day and night security. HF Group’s biggest real estate project since Buru Buru in the 70’s is located in a prime enclave with educational facilities in close proximity and the Komarock Mall, commonly known as K-Mall, 300 metres away, housing Tuskys supermarket, banks, eateries and Aga Khan University Hospital full-service clinic. “There is a huge demand for housing, particularly decent, affordable housing. HFDI aims to roll out 10,000 housing units for sale annually by the year 2020,” said Karanja.

PIH to help patients access low-cost cancer treatment The Nairobi Hospital has announced a partnership deal with the Rwandese Government to provide lower cost cancer treatment to needy patients through a programme dubbed Partners in Health Rwanda (PIH) and supported by the Rwandese High Commission in Nairobi. The collaboration will enable cancer patients access various treatment offered by the hospital including external beam radiation therapy, brachytherapy and surgical services. Through this collaboration, PIH will pay for all services offered by The Nairobi Hospital on behalf of the patients. This will enable between 100 -150 Rwandan cancer patients access

to treatment per year. Since the MOU was signed, more than 25 patients have been served and others are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. From 2005, PIH has been supporting the Rwandese government to bring high quality health care to three districts that previously had some of the country’s worst outcomes. PIH also supports the Butaro Hospital cancer care center in northern rural Rwanda which is the only Cancer center in the country that offers comprehensive cancer care to patients. Since Rwanda does not yet have a radiation therapy unit, patients in need of radiation therapy treatment are now referred to Nairobi Hospital at a discounted price.

“Partners in Health prioritizes the poorest of the poor who would not otherwise be able to afford this treatment and caters for their costs including airfares to/from Rwanda to Nairobi. Through this collaboration, The Nairobi Hospital seeks to bridge the gap by enabling access to treatment at a lower cost for such patients,” the group said in a statement. Speaking during the partnership signing ceremony, the hospitals Lead Radiotherapist, Mr. Fredrick Asige echoed that patients will be able to access several treatment options available at the hospital’s cancer treatment center. “Rwandese cancer patients will get

access to external beam radiation therapy, brachytherapy and other support services.” In response, Dr Alex Coutinho the Country Director of Partners in health asserted that he “was very proud to lead an organization like PIH that prioritizes the poor and to work in a country like Rwanda where the needs of the poor are always taken into consideration” The new Nairobi Hospital Cancer Treatment Centre was officially launched in July 2012 to provide world class treatment and service to cancer patients. It houses two state of the art linear accelerators, a Brachytherapy Unit, a

Chemotherapy Center, a Radioactiveiodine unit, consulting rooms, examination rooms, general cancer wards, and ensuite rooms. In line with the hospitals mission to offer patients the best care using advanced technology, the center combines new approaches, specialties, technologies and medications with dedicated care, convenience and the best possibility of a cure. The center provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art facilities, which ensure that patients are comfortable and receive the right treatment on time. @Dennis_x254

ACCESS Raymond Ochieng

Not many artistes can claim success or even infamy in the dance world. Dance is a fast paced but fickle and incredibly hard career. Raymond Ochieng has carved a niche for himself in the industry, by blending contemporary dance styles with traditional African forms and modern techniques. Still in his 20s the professional freelance dance performer and tutor from the country majors in contemporary, hip hop and African urban dance styles and techniques and doubles as a fitness instructor. His career has also had quite some longevity despite his age. According to Dance Centre, his dance career started immediately after the successful completion of his high school education in 2009. He trained in basic dance techniques with YAWA (Youths

Associated With Arts), a dance company based in Kisumu and after two years he began participating in various productions and workshops with the company such as “TRUTH’ and “ASHES” which both had several tours within East Africa. In 2015 Raymond traveled to Holland for a production named ‘Boma’ with the International Dance Theater in Amsterdam working with a Dutch choreographer Cornelius Garnea. He has worked with Finnish dance company Tero Saarinen in collaboration with Ghetto Exposed on the performance TRAIL between October and December 2015.

And I still do that.” Interest in the instrument began while he was still a student in high school. “I was in Upper Hill School. That’s where it all started for me. I got to meet some of the best there who inspired me to pursue a career in music. Funny thing I got to hold my first violin less than two years ago…a short while after I cleared school.” Getting inspiration from a variety of sources Nelfrey Ongeri continues to hone his sound as he perfects his art. “Being a violinist, finding the right kind of sound is quite challenging. ‘Kajiandae’ might be described as a ‘love ballad’ but its connection to the love story, lyric-wise and visually is tenuous at best. The video is a thing of beauty, shot by director Justin Campos of Gorilla Films, the visuals are clean and super-rich. There is no bones about that fact plus the instrumentation produced by Emma The Boy, is a triumph. But somehow this all seems like a great opportunity for some product placement. Not to say it isn’t a great watch though.

SARA FOSTER layered up for the occasion.

There’s no sugar coating it, this song is a tragedy. From start to finish, it’s a lot to take in. Parodies are supposed to be a little ridiculous, which this song is in spades, but they are also supposed be funny and make you pause to think. Whoever sang the chorus is at least putting a little effort, they might be over-singing but at least they are trying and effort is the one thing this jam is lacking. Some of the shots are pretty but that is still not enough to distract you from the utter sadness of this song.

SA stun Senegal as Uganda, Egypt, Nigeria, win in world cup qualifiers MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2016

South Africa, Uganda, Nigeria and Burkina Faso all recorded victories on Saturday as qualifying continued across Africa for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. On Sunday, there was wins for, Egypt against Ghana while DR Congo won away to Guinea. South Africa inflicted a first competitive defeat on Senegal since January 2015, winning 2-1 in Polokwane to go second on goal difference in Group D behind Burkina Faso who won 2-0 away to Cape Verde. Algeria also suffered their first competitive defeat since the 2015 Nations Cup with a 2-1 loss in Nigeria. The Super Eagles have taken a four point lead in Group B after Cameroon were held to a 1-1 draw by Zambia. Uganda’s recent resurgence continued with a 1-0 victory over Congo Brazzaville in Kampala to lead the Group E standings. South Africa coach Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba knew that anything less than a win against Group D pacesetters Senegal would increase the pressure on him, after Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon. The hosts took the lead in the 43rd minute after a contentious penalty was awarded for handball. Thulani Hlatshwayo confidently shot past Abdoulaye Diallo to successfully convert the spot-kick and put South Africa 1-0 up. Just minutes later, Bafana Bafana doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to an impressive individual goal from Thulani Serero to leave Senegal facing an uphill task. Senegal grabbed a consolation goal 15 minutes from time through Cheikh Ndoye, but they could not find a path through a stubborn South African defence, to taste a competitive defeat for the first time in almost two years. South Africa are second in group D after Burkina Fasowent top on goal-difference with a 2-0 win away to Cape Verde. First-half goals from Banou Diawara and Prejuce Nakoulma gave Burkina Faso the victory in Praia.

Bolt to train with Dortmund as he takes a step closer to ‘dream’ of playing for Man Utd Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke has confirmed that sprint king Usain Bolt will train with the German giants. There had been some confusion over whether the Jamaican nine-time Olympic champion was serious about trying his hand at football, but Watzke has revealed it is ‘no joke’ and ‘not a marketing move’. Dortmund and Bolt are both sponsored by the German-based sports goods company Puma, whose president contacted Dortmund to say that Bolt had asked about training with the team. Watzke has welcomed the idea and admits coach Thomas Tuchel is also keen on bringing the fastest man in the world to the club for a training session. ‘We decided this some time ago,’ Watzke said ‘Puma CEO Bjorn Gulden who is member of our board has told us that Usain is highly interested in practising with us. ‘For us that’s no problem. Our coach Thomas Tuchel likes the idea as well. ‘Of course he won’t visit us in an important week with Champions League matches, but maybe in the pre-season. We are delighted and take this as an honour.’ ‘For me, if I could get to play for Manchester United, that would be like a dream come true. Yes, that would be epic.’

South Africa player Sibusiso Zuma celebrates after scoring during their 3-2 defeat to Senegal during the friendly game played in Port Elizabeth, South Africa,

Chelsea’s Victor Moses scored twice as Nigeria kept up their winning start to the group phase of 2018 World Cup qualifying with a 3-1 victory over Algeria in Uyo to make it two wins out of two in Group B. The Super Eagles took the lead through Moses in the 25th minute, and they made it 2-0 just before half-time when another Chelsea player, John Mikel Obi, beat Algeria’s off-side trap to slot home as Algeria’s defenders stood and watched. Algeria did have chances to get back into the game - the best of them coming from Nabil Bentaleb who missed from close range. Bentaleb made amends mid-way through the second half with a powerful shot from 25 yards to make it 2-1. That goal made it a frenetic end to the match, with Nigeria making sure of the three points with a third goal - a second from Moses in stoppage time to win 3-1. Nigeria have a comfortable cushion at the top of Group B, after Cameroonwere held to a 1-1 draw at home by Zambia in Limbe.

Zambia took a shock lead through Collins Mbesuma in the 34th minute, with Cameroon’s equaliser coming from the penalty spot, as Vincent Aboubakar struck just before half-time. In a blow for Zambia, their influential TP Mazembe player Rainford Kalaba was booked with the Zambia FA confiring he will now miss their match against Algeria. In Kampala, Uganda picked up three more points in Group E with a 1-0 win over Congo Brazzaville. A goal from 18-year-old forward Farouk Miya in the 18th minute was enough to give the Cranes a vital victory which takes them to the top of the group on four points. Miya, who plays for Standard Liege in Belgium, controlled the ball effortlessly to shoot past Congolese goalkeeper Mongondza Ngobo, and add another goal to his growing international tally. Uganda had a wealth of chances for both Miya and captain Geofrey Massa, but the hosts failed to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal.

They were almost made to pay late on in the match when their Congolese opponents had a clear shot on goal, only for the Ugandan defence to clear it off the line. Veteran Cranes midfielder Tony Mawejje was visibly upset when stretchered off with an injury midway through the second half, an incident that clouded an otherwise impressive afternoon for the hosts. In Group C, Mali and Gabon drew 0-0 in Bamako, while Morocco and leaders Ivory Coast also saw out a goalless draw. On Friday, the second round of group games got underway in Algeria where the Group A match between Libya and Tunisia took place on security grounds. A penalty from Sunderland’s Wahbi Khazri was enough to ive Tunisia a 1-0 victory and take them to the top of Group A with two wins out of two. Libya are bottom of the group after two consecutive defeats. Only the five group winners will qualify for Russia 2018.

Hamilton keeps F1 title race alive with Brazilian Grand Prix win

Lewis Hamilton produced a masterful performance to win a wet, chaotic, crash-strewn Brazilian Grand Prix and take the title fight to the final race. His ninth win of 2016 came in a race with several high-speed accidents, two stoppages and five safety cars. The victory cut the lead of his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, who finished second, to 12 points. Rosberg will secure the championship if he finishes third in Abu Dhabi on 27 November even if Hamilton wins. As one of the most dramatic races for years unfolded, Hamilton was supreme at the front in treacherous conditions, lapping consistently faster than anyone. After each restart, Hamilton cruised easily away from Rosberg - building at one stage an 18-second lead in 14 laps before another safety car cut his lead to nothing. His victory is the 52nd of his career, making him the second most successful race winner of all time ahead of Alain Prost (51). Michael Schumacher is way ahead on 91.

Okumbi motivated as Stars eye Liberia MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2016

Harambee Stars head coach Stanley Okumbi his working on methods to have his players have an all-round control of the match ahead of the team’s international friendly with Liberia tomorrow. Okumbi’s remarks comes after Erick Johanna scored the only goal in the first half as Stars extended their unbeaten run to SEVEN matches, beating visitors Mozambique 1-0 in an international friendly played at the Kasarani Stadium, Saturday evening. The Mathare United midfielder booted home from inside the box a cut-back from Clifton Miheso to give Stars a deserved lead after a strong beginning to the half. “Right now I am implementing on a number of things. I must say we are impressed with what we are doing. Yes there is control especially in midfield, but I also want the same in defense and attack,” said the former Mathare United coach. “Playing at home, I want more control of the ball, we have done that playing away, it is about time we did the same at home,” he added. Against Mozambique, the first half was well controlled by the home side but the visitors played slightly better in the second half but barely threatened the home team as Stars keeper Boniface

Oluoch was hugely underemployed. The local lads shone in every area of the pitch with Brian Mandela and David Owino putting an impregnable wall in defence, aided by the fullbacks Eric Ouma and Joackins Atudo. Victor Wanyama and Antony Akumu

patrolled the midfield with relative ease while Jesse Were was the pick of the front four. The Zesco United forward may not have scored in a wide forward role, but was among the creative outlets for Stars, creating glorious chances, a couple of which Michael Olunga will

feel guilty for not finishing them off. It seemed a long time ago when Harambee Stars couldn’t find the back of the net, but lately goals, have been coming albeit not with great abandon. Stars could have gone at least 2-0 up inside 10 minutes but lead forward

Olunga was culpable of missing some chances. Olunga was at it again with six minutes gone but he sent a left footed shot wide from an area he usually thrives at club level. Captain Victor Wanyama put in a composed performance reminiscent of his displays at his English Premier League club Tottenham as he dictated the proceedings constantly picking wingers Clifton Miheso and Were with great precision. The dreadlocked OS Mambas duo of Joan Mussica and Edwilsou had an opening quarter to forget with Johanna, Olunga and Wanyama occasionally running over them with ease. Stars’ dominance and determination finally paid off in the 16th minute, Miheso who had been industrious on the left flank dribbled past the solid Bheu Junuacio before sending a tailored pass at the path of the on rushing Johanna, the Mathare United man unleashed a shot which found the top corner of the net for the opener. Midfielder Akumu sent a long drive late in the first half which missed the target by inches as the teams went into the breather with Stars 1-0 up.Kenya easily saw off the rest of the match to pick a second straight win after the 1-0 win at DR Congo last month.

Clinical Australia beat England to reach final

England were comprehensively beaten by a clinical Australia at London Stadium as their Four Nations campaign ended in miserable fashion. The home team needed to avoid defeat to reach the final at Anfield next weekend but, after taking an early lead, they were comprehensively outplayed by a team that superbly built pressure and cruelly exposed England’s weaknesses. England led 6-2 at the half-hour mark after a try from Jermaine McGillvary, but Australia dominated territory and eventually scored when a brilliant pass from full-back Darius Boyd saw Blake Ferguson touch down out wide. The Kangaroos, already assured of a place in the final, opened up a 10-6 advantage at the break and after Sam Burgess failed to collect a pass from Josh Hodgson under the sticks shortly after the restart, they quickly took the game beyond England.

elgium extended their lead at the top of Group H by thrashing Estonia 8-1 in their World Cup qualifier in Brussels. Dries Mertens and Romelu Lukaku struck twice each, with Thomas Meunier, Eden Hazard and Yannick Carrasco on target and Ragnar Klavan scoring an own goal. Of concern to Chelsea, however, will be the sight of their playmaker Hazard leaving the field in the 74th minute with what appeared to be a knee injury. Henri Anier, who made it 3-1, scored Estonia’s goal. The striker became the first player to score against the Red Devils in this qualifying campaign. Roberto Martinez’s team have won all four of their group games, scoring 21 goals. Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice and missed a penalty as Portugal defeated Latvia in a World Cup Group B qualifier. The 31-year-old opened the scoring from the spot but missed another penalty after the break when his effort came off both post and keeper Andris Vanins. Arturs Zjuzins equalised with a low strike before

William Carvalho headed the Portuguese back in front. Ronaldo’s volley made it 3-1 and Bruno Alves headed in a late fourth. Portugal now have nine points but remain in second behind leaders Switzerland, who moved to 12 points with a 2-0 win over Faroe Islands. Manchester United’s Memphis Depay scored twice as the Netherlands beat Luxembourg 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier to move second in Group A. Depay, a £25m signing from PSV in 2015, has played just 20 minutes for United in the Premier League this season. But the 22-year-old came off the bench in Luxembourg to score with a header and free-kick to secure victory. Arjen Robben had given the Dutch the lead only for Maxime Chanot to level with a penalty before the break. Joshua Brenet was deemed to have clipped Daniel da Mota, which gave the defender an opportunity to score from the spot, but it was not enough for a Luxembourg side who have now gone nine matches without a win. The introduction of

Depay after the break swung the match in the visitors’ favour, moving the Netherlands on to seven points, three behind leaders France, and above third-placed Sweden on goal difference. Meanwhile,Wales have the quality to top their World Cup qualifying group, captain Ashley Williams says. Their bid for a first World Cup finals appearance since 1958 suffered a blow when they were held 1-1 by Serbia. Wales trail Republic of Ireland and Serbia in Group D, but Williams is not losing hope despite the late equaliser. “They will all be big games to come. But we feel we have enough in our dressing room to win all of them if that is what we have to do,” he said. “We have to take the positives from the game. We haven’t lost yet in the campaign and feel like we can beat any team.” Williams, who joined Everton in August after a decade with Swansea City, feels the group is likely to go down to the final round of fixtures. Wales visit Ireland on 24 March before a trip to Serbia on 11 June.
