country. He said ID cards should not only be viewed as documents for voting but also vital requirements to registers businesses. Speaking yesterday during a tour of Nairobi’s Mukuru kwa Njenga slums, where fire destroyed several structures last week, Ruto urged young people to shun drugs and alcohol and take their position as agents of change and development. “I urge young people to shun drugs and alcohol and take their position as agents of change and development. Youths should not only get Identity Cards for purposes of voting but also to register business,” he said. Ruto revealed that Kenyans will soon be issued with new identity cards in fresh registration. “The government will issue super ID card that will contain biometric information; each person’s unique biological markers as well as social security and national insurance details” he said. The DP noted that a database of the new information will be established to give the State accurate and detailed information about all citizens incorporating the record of births. According to the Deputy President, the exercise is intended to help in planning, elections and other administrative functions. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

MPs now want NYS scrapped Two MPs have called for the scrapping of the National Youth Service (NYS) claiming it is being used as a cash cow by individuals in top leadership positions. Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter and his Homa Bay Town counterpart Opondo Kaluma also want the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to withdraw all criminal cases facing public servants taken to court in relation to the loss of Sh791million at the NYS. They say the public servants are being used as mere scapegoats following fresh allegations that former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru received a share of the cash. According to the two, NYS should be immediately be disbanded and the current recruits absorbed into the National Police Service and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) until the funds previously allocated to the youth agency can be fully accounted for. “NYS is nothing other than a cash cow for individuals in top leadership. Parliament must cease budgetary allocation to NYS beginning this financial year until funds previously appropriated are fully accounted for,” Keter said. Addressing the press at

He said nothing less than having Waiguru face criminal action and refund public funds looted will assuage the people. Kaluma said careers of dedicated
public servants will not be destroyed just because the Executive is keen in protecting an individual-Waiguru. He called on the National Assembly to come up with stiffer penalties on those found culpable of corruption. “It’s time the National Assembly reviews the penalties of those found to have engaged in corruption, otherwise few individuals will take this country down the drain,” he said. The two also called for the immediate reinstatement of former NYS boss Kiplimo Rugut, saying it’s now clear his removal
was a ploy by Waiguru to create a suitable system for looting of public funds. “We now know that the removal of Rugut from the leadership of NYS and subsequent personnel changes at NYS by Waiguru merely targeted creation of a system to loot public funds,” Keter said. In the wake of fresh allegations in a sworn affidavit by Josephine Kabura Irungu that Waiguru received a share of the Sh791 million lost in the NYS scandal, Keter said the entire EACC Secretariat should resign or removed from office for covering up open theft. sam_x254
Governor on the spot over tenders awarded to kin Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto yesterday fought claims that he unprocedurally recruited 500 county security officers and awarded more than 50 per cent of tenders to his relatives. Appearing before the Senate Finance Committee, Ruto was put to task by the Senators to explain why he had sidestepped the County Public Service Board in the recruitment of the officers. “The law is clear Governor, that no appointment whether casual or permanent should be done without the involvement of the Public Service Board, unless you are operating on your own law,” said the committee chairman Senator Billow Kerrow. Kerrow said Internal Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery had raised concern when he appeared before the Senate over the recruitment of the security officers, saying they might be misused by the Governor. “The need of the people notwithstanding, the law must be followed and the County

Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto when he appeared before the Senate Finance Committee. He was tasked to explain circumstances under which his relatives won tenders.
Public Service Board ought to have been actively involved on this. When we question you over such procedures, we are actually helping you to avoid problems with the Auditor General when he will be doing audit report,” Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o said. Ruto, however said the board was taking too long to employ
workers while the people were suffering. “The Public Service Board took too long to hire people yet some services are so essential and can’t wait. If you subject everything to the board they will take at least six months,” he said. The Bomet Governor also defended his move, saying the
law does not bar Governors from employing casual workers at the Counties. “As far as I am concerned no law bars any Governor from hiring on temporary basis. If there is one I’m yet to be informed,” he said. On the award of road construction tender to his brother Micah Ruto and sister Joyce Jepkorir, the Governor said his brother applied just like any other person and qualified. “My brother applied for the tender, we went through it and found that he qualified, there is no breach of the law in that context as everything was done within the confines of the law,” Ruto said. “My relatives are qualified for Bomet County business under my administration just like other businesspeople,” added the Governor. Senators, however challenged the Governor to provide minutes detailing how his brother managed to get the tender. sam_x254
It is also aimed at helping to identify foreigners, including terrorists and their sleeper cells, who may have corruptly bought national identification papers. Last year during a meeting with the commissioners from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Ruto announced that the government will embark on fresh issuance of new identity cards to help the government plan for its citizens. The DP said IEBC had some experience of using biometric machines which it used to register more than 14 million voters in 2013 General elections. Though the government is not openly saying it, the fresh registration is an admission that the current system, involving officials from the National Registration Bureau, has been abused and is a failure. It is almost certain that the government is having difficulties establishing who is a genuine citizen purely on the basis of identification papers produced by the existing system. Some of the illegal immigrants caught in the current security swoop have Kenyan ID cards and passports but their details are not in the national database. It has been claimed that immigration and provincial administration officials at all levels have enriched themselves by selling these sensitive documents while compromising national security. The fresh registration is expected to start as early as July this year. Ministries of Information, Communication and Technology and Interior and Coordination of National Government will lead the exercise. Mr Ruto said that the registration will help identify, once and for all, those holding fake identification papers. “In order to address the prevailing security challenges, we intend to consolidate all current registers of persons into a single national register with accurate and relevant information, he said. hillary_x254

Lazy officers to be sacked
Lands and Housing Development Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi arrives at the Kenya Bankers Association Centre in Nairobi where he held discussions with officers from his ministry’s department of Housing and Urban Development. Kiunjuri changes tune on TA’s term Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has made an about turn on his earlier stance to have the term of the Transition Authority extended. The CS yesterday told MPs that extending the term of the authority would be unconstitutional, not justified and would create unnecessary conflict between the agency and the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC). Kiunjuri in his submission to the Parliamen-
tary Constitution Implementation Oversight Committee chaired by Githunguri MP Njoroge Baiya retreated from his earlier position which he said he would be seeking for the extension of the term of TA. The Cabinet Secretary said the defunct Commission on the Implementation of the Constition (CIC) gave an advisory opinion on the illegality of extending the term of the Kinuthia Wamwangi-led authority. “Seven out of the 16 board members of the TA are Government Principal Secretaries, therefore, the expertise and institutional memory of the TA will be retained by the National Government thus ensuring continuity,” Kiunjuri said. Additionally, Kiunjuri (picturted left) said most of the staff of the Transitional Authority were seconded from the National Government and would be available if need be to work at the IGRTC which has been mandated to recruit its own staff. Kiunjuri asked the committee to establish an independent audit committee to objectively asses and evaluate the work of the Transitional Authority to ascertain the magnitude of the pending work. He, however, said the final say of the extension of TA’s term will depend on the National Assembly. “It is my humble submission that this matter is in the purview of Senate and the National Assembly,” he said. The Senate and the National Assembly have taken different stands over the extension of the authority’s term. While the Senate wants its term extended, the National Assembly disagrees. When Wamwangi appeared before the parliamentary committee last week seeking for an extension of his term, the committee threatened not to extend the term of the TA saying it has not achieved much as envisioned three years since its formation. sam_x254
Part-time varsity dons protest over Sh1 billion unpaid salaries Hundreds of part-time lecturers in public and private universities are owed more than Sh1 billion by institutions that withhold their pay for unexplained reasons. The lecturers drawn from various universities met Tuesday at a city hotel to express their displeasure and planned a joint protest to draw the attention of the government and their employers to their plight. “Our employers owes us more than one billion in remuneration and allowances,” read part of a letter addressing their plight to the Ministry of higher education. They said most of the universities hire them on casual contracts and fail to remit their payments regularly. “You can’t believe it if I tell you that I have not been paid for units I taught in 2012 in two public universities and one private university. The last pay I got was in August
last year, for part of the work I did in 2012,” said Dr Kimingi, one of the tutors. Lecturers employed on a fulltime basis are not affected, but the part-timers, said to consist almost 50 per cent teaching staff in some universities, complain of myriad problems that reduce their contracts to slave labour. A survey done by the Kenya Institute of Public Policy and Research (Kippra) in 2014, indicated that up to 50 per cent lecturing staff at public universities are engaged as part-timers. The survey also revealed that most of the part timers were eager to engage their services but not keen to sign solid contracts. More than 82 per cent had no written contracts. Last year, the higher education ministry expressed its concern over increasing cases of missing exam marks and undue delay in the release of results in public universities,
a problem they attributed to frustrated lecturers who had not been paid their dues. Accused universities have blamed lack of adequate funding for their inability to meet financial obligations they enter with part-time lecturers. However, the public universities cited for flagrant abuse of don’s labour rights have been opening tens of campuses in towns across Kenya and putting up multi-million-shilling buildings in their compounds. In the recent past, public university dons threatened to down their tools for an industrial action if the vice chancellors fail to address their pay hike proposals within seven days. They are demanding better terms of service and good working conditions. @wilson_x254

CJ defends Judiciary against corruption Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has defended the Judiciary over bribery allegations, saying that a majority of his officers are not corrupt as perceived by the public. Mutunga said the judiciary has been at the forefront in the fight against the graft for many years. Speaking at the Limuru Magistrates court during the launch of the Magistrates and Kadhis courts Registry manual, Mutunga said that Judiciary has been consistent in dealing with graft cases having established an elaborate anti-corruption and integrity infrastructure that is yielding fruits. “The vast majority of judges and magistrates have no integrity issues at all. They continue to serve with distinction and professionalism. These hard working officers must not be tarred by the same brush of corruption,” said Mutunga. One of the judiciary’s top most officers, Justice Philip Tunoi of the Supreme Court is facing accusations of having received a bribe to influence the outcome of a case. Already, The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) headed by Dr
Chief Justice Willy Mutunga speaks during the launch of a new Magistrates Courts manual in Limuru yesterday. He defended the Judiciary against claims that it is marred by corruption.
Mutunga has recommended to President Uhuru Kenyatta to form a tribunal to investigate the claims against Tunoi. However, the CJ maintains that only a small fraction of judicial officers
are implicated in graft. “It was only 3 judges out of 143 Judges in the country who are facing corruption allegations, with 50 magistrates among 450 have been accused and only 65 staff out 4000 are facing
corruption allegations” he added. He urged the public to have confidence in the judiciary even as promised to weed out cartels and corrupt judicial officers from the bench. However, Mutunga highlighted the gains made by the judiciary since he come to office. He said that the case backlog has been reduced by over 50pc from over 1 million cases to below 500,000. Elsewhere, Attorney General Githu Muigai has said that the term of the current Constitution Office holders will not be affected under the new Government policy that seeks to reconstitute independent commissions. Muigai said the new policy which takes effect next year will only be applicable to constitutional office holders who will be sworn into office under the new guidelines. The new policy seeks to recruit constitutional commission office holders on a full or part time basis as well as collapse some of the commissions in an effort to reduce wage bill and ensure efficiency. The government has been in
dilemma as it seeks to find the best formula to reduce duplication of roles by the various independent commissions amid suggestions that the commissions be collapsed into one or two entities. The government’s quest is partially informed by the huge wage bill accumulated by the various commissions, a challenge that has seen it mull re-constituting the commissions with an aim of reducing the number of its commissioner by next year. According to the AG, the restructuring will not affect the current commissioners whose term ends in 2017. Among the commissions which have closed shop after their life ended is the Charles Nyachae led commission for the implementation of the constitution. The AG was speaking in his office yesterday after receiving a report from the Kenya Law Reform Commission (KLRC) on the review of the societies Act. @hillary_x254
Karua calls for lifestyle audit of IEBC commissioners Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua has petitioned the Ethics and Anticorruption (EACC) to conduct a lifestyle audit of all commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to unravel their ‘sudden’ source wealth. Karua alleged some of the commissioners may have benefited or acquired ‘illegal’ wealth using unorthodox means by awarding illegal contracts and exaggerations of the electoral body’s budget.
Addressing a meeting convened by the Centre for Multiparty Democracy in a Nairobi hotel, Karua said there is need for the electoral body’s officers lifestyles to be audited since some of its officials have already been implicated in graft allegations. “We need to conduct a life style audit of all the commissioners so that we can tell their credibility and suitability to conduct the 2017 General Elections” she said.
“Some of these individuals have been implicated in bribery allegations, which they have vehemently denied but some like the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) James Oswago are facing economic crimes charges,” she added. Ms Karua said as the country heads to the polls, IEBC needs to be audited to determine how much money should be allocated to it to avoid embezzlement of resources given to them.
She also questioned the sincerity of the electoral body which she accused of misappropriating funds for the Gatundu South Parliamentary by-elections where they never conducted elections but still indicated to have spent the same amount of money like in Mathare where by elections were held. “IEBC cannot tell us that they spent the same amount of money in Mathare and Gatundu South Parliamentary by elections, yet we
know that IEBC never had elections in Gatundu South since there was only one candidate vying? She asked. Ms Karua who was also a presidential candidate in 2013 General elections, warned parliament to exercise caution even as they allocate to IEBC a whooping Sh45 billion to conduct next year’s general elections, “The commission has been known to “exaggerate” its budget,” she said. @hillary_x254

Obama: Trump will not be president Republican Donald Trump will not be president because it’s a “serious job”, President Barack Obama has said. “I continue to believe that Mr Trump will not be president. And the reason is because I have a lot of faith in the American people,” said Mr Obama. Mr Trump, a billionaire businessman, is the frontrunner in the race to be his party’s choice for the White House. He has won one state primary already, and leads the polls in South Carolina, where Republicans vote on Saturday. Speaking at the Asean economic summit in California, the president was asked by a reporter about Mr Trump. The electorate will not pick him, said Mr Obama, because “they recognise that being president is a serious job”. “It’s not hosting a talk show or a reality show, it’s not promotion, it’s not marketing, it’s hard. It’s not a matter of pandering and doing whatever will get you in
the news on a given day.” Mr Trump responded by saying it was a compliment to be criticised by a president who had done so much damage to the country. The New York hotel developer’s antipathy to Mr Obama goes back a number of years - he used to demand that the president produce proof that he was born in the US. And his election campaign has continuously made headlines, for controversial remarks and policies. Mr Trump said he would deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, build a wall on the southern border paid for by Mexico and that Muslims should be stopped from entering the US. Poll body issues alarm over fake ballot papers in Uganda Uganda’s electoral commission has warned of fraudsters circulating illegal papers in tomorrow’s tightly contested elections, as seven opposition candidates try to end President Yoweri Museveni’s 30-year rule. At a press conference today in Kampala, Electoral Commission chairman Badru Kiggundu said some people had printed fake ballot papers to confuse
voters. “There are plans to print similar ballot papers, pretick them and parade them before media to discredit Uganda elections. Be on the look-out,” he said. “Envelope to carry results is tamper-proof. If you tamper with it in transit, we shall know,” he said in an assurance to the voters. At the same time, police have assured voters of their safety during tomorrow’s elections.

Yesterday was peaceful,” he added before assuring “We are monitoring those who are trying to intimidate voters. Everybody should go and vote. Kebs destroys Sh20.7m goods in war on counterfeit products The Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) has intensified its fight against substandard goods in the country. Through its market surveillance and inspection, Kebs yesterday netted and destroyed substandard goods at Athi River EPZ grounds valued at over Sh20.7 million. The substandard products ranged from medical appliances such as syringes, electrical appliances, electronic household appliances and equipment, building
materials, motor-cycle inner tubes among others. Last April, Kebs destroyed goods valued at Sh37 million making a total of Sh 57.7 million the value of substandard goods destroyed in the country in the last 11 months. Kebs Managing Director Charles Ongwae, who witnessed the destruction of the substandard goods, said this exercise is a warning to traders and manufacturers of such products. He called on Kenyans to be
vigilante when purchasing any goods and always to check on Kebs marks of quality. “Last April, we destroyed substandard goods valued at Sh 37 million. Today we’re gathered here to witness destruction of yet another set of substandard goods that our market surveillance officers have seized from the market. The goods you see here are valued at Sh 20.7 million,” he said. Mr. Ongwae further stressed that
his organization core mandate is to avail standards that are used to facilitate trade, protecting consumers from harmful and poor quality goods and finally protecting the environment. CBK to crack whip on staff over Imperial Bank collapse Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) employees found guilty of involvement in the Imperial Bank Limited saga will face disciplinary action, CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge has said. He said the regulator is only awaiting the outcome of the forensic audit started late last year by global firm, FTI Consulting, to know the way forward. The governor, who appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, however, said the audit must confirm the involvement of any individual to illegal transactions before any disciplinary action is taken. “There is actually an ongoing forensic audit and without interference let them find out what is there. Let them pick specific transactions; and when all these come forward and there is evidence, we will treat everyone with fairness, without fear and without favour. It wouldn’t just be one email but a list of transactions… solid evidence,” Njoroge assured the legislators. He was answering a query by Teso South MP Mary Emaase on claims that some Central Bank of Kenya officers colluded with Imperial Bank senior managers to bring down the institution. Apart from the culprits involved, the audit is also looking into the bank’s ‘filtered’ books, processes and governance system and help explain the said unsafe and unsound business transactions that led to the closure of the bank in October last year. FTI is working with Kenya Depositors Insurance Company (KDIC) officials who took over management of the bank as receiver. Last Friday, Governor Njoroge says Sh6.4 billion of 16,955 claims had been paid out of 19,106 claims received. At the moment the bank has at least Sh87bilion in deposits.
Strong institutions, accountability Resolution Insurance to crucial to quenching citizens’ thirst sponsor enterprise expo Strong institutions, accountability and mechanisms that turn investment into effective services, are critical to achieving universal water access and safe human waste management, according to a report by the World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Program (WSP). The report, which was compiled in partnership with the WHO/ UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation, comes at a time when more than 17 million Kenyans lack access to clean, safe drinking water. “Today, 2.4 billion people still live without access to improved sanitation, about one billion people defecate in the open, and more than 640,000 people lack improved drinking water sources,” said the Bank in a
recent statement. With the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals on water and sanitation (SDG 6), countries committed themselves to change this situation over the next 15 years not only by reducing to zero the number of unserved population, but also upgrading the current levels of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). The study, dubbed: The Costs of Meeting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal Targets on Drinking Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, reveals that current levels of investment are likely to be sufficient to provide basic water and sanitation services for all by 2030. It states that if the current global expenditure, estimated at around $28.4 billion (Sh2.8 trillion) per year, were to
be targeted properly, every household in the world would have access to drinking water, an adequate toilet and a suitable place to wash their hands by 2030. The total cost of providing WASH services at these levels is estimated at around $114 billion per year, three times the current investment levels. “Considering the amount of estimated investment needed, efforts to meet the SDG targets on drinking-water and sanitation will require not only additional public funding, but also greater service efficiency and increased engagement from civil society and the private sector,” according to WSP Senior Economist Guy Hutton, the lead author of the study. Once the deal is completed, SBM will buy a Kenyan bank in a deal that would see the firm expand by 30 per cent annually over the next five years though the bank in question was not disclosed. “The aim is to grow our international business by at least 30 per cent over the next 5 years,” Kwong said. The company is also planning to start a new outlet in Seychelles to further expand its African market. SBM, the operator of the Indian Ocean nation’s second largest bank by market share, said it was in talks with a “viable” commercial bank in Kenya to acquire it, and was awaiting a commercial banking license in the Seychelles.
“The share of international business is very negligible but we see big potential,” Kee Chong Li Kwong Wing, SBM Holdings’ chairman told Reuters on the phone. Wing said the bank expects the Seychelles central bank to decide next month on its application for a commercial bank license, and declined to identify the Kenyan lender SBM is in discussions with. “We are in talks to acquire a viable Kenyan commercial bank. This will help us extend our footprint in East Africa,” he said. With assets of $3.68 billion as of last September, SBM has outlets in Mauritius, Madagascar and India. It also opened a representative office in Myanmar. Data published on the Bank of Mauritius website has revealed that banks in Mauritius have excess liquidity amounting to approximately 11 billion rupees.
Jambojet sets record, flies 1m customers in two years Kenya’s low cost carier of Kenya Airways Jambojet, has set a regional record of handling one million customers in less than two years. In a feat that indicates the increasing popularity of the concept of low-cost flying, the milestone has come barely two months into the company’s second year anniversary. During the first year, the domestic market grew by 25 per cent in passenger numbers. This year the Jambojet passenger numbers increased by 18 per cent compared to last year. The demand in all routes has grown tremendously as reflected in the number of round trips this year which is at 3,312 flights up to date as opposed to 2,522 last year. Jambojet CEO Willem Hondius attributed the immense growth to low fares, customer service and clear timings for the economy growth tickers in the various destinations.“The number of destinations increased from four when we began in April 2014 to seven, while our fleet also grew from two to four with the addition of two Bombadier Dash-8 Q400 to the already existing Boeing 737-300 during the mentioned period,” he added. We remain fully committed to Africa and will continue to invest in the growth of

Push to protect Scotch whiskey in Mozambique Scottish Secretary David Mundell has urged officials in Mozambique to grant legal protection for Scotch whisky as exports going into the country continue to skyrocket. Speaking during his visit to the fastgrowing African state, Mr Mundell requested Mozambique’s minister of industry and commerce to give Scotch a geographical indication (GI) status. The move would mean only whisky that has been made in Scotland could legally be sold as Scotch in the country, BBC reports. Mr Mundell raised the issue as part of an effort to promote Scottish exports during a tour of Mozambique and Malawi. “Whisky is one of Scotland’s greatest success stories and it is important that our exporters get all the support they deserve,’’he said. Adding: “Our firms adhere to the highest standards and make a product which is recognised the world over. They should be protected from imitators, and consumers in Mozambique and elsewhere should be able to have confidence that what they are drinking is the real thing.” Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) chief executive David Frost said: “It is great to see that Scotch whisky is in such demand in Mozambique and we expect its popularity to increase as the country’s economy grows. “We have the same positive outlook for many African countries with a growing-middle class seeking out high-quality imported products such as Scotch. “We are pleased that the British government is supporting Scotch whisky in Mozambique through the Secretary of State for Scotland’s visit.
Drought pushing South Africa economy to edge of recession South Africa’s worst drought record is pushing the country’s already weak economy into a slump, ratings firm Moody’s has said. “The worst drought on record in South Africa is aggravating the ongoing economic slowdown, threatening near-zero growth if not a recession in 2016,” Moody’s Senior Vice President and lead analyst for South Africa, Kristin Lindow told Reuters. The severe drought was caused by El Nino weather system that swept across southern Africa mid 2015
threatening maize production, the staple food in the region forcing the nation to heavily rely on imports to plug the shortfall. “Normally a net exporter of grains, South Africa will now need to import substantial amounts of grain to compensate for domestic production shortfalls,” Lindow said. Inflation figures due on Wednesday are expected to show consumer prices rising just short of 6 percent, the South African Reserve Bank’s upper target. “We expect this to lead to more rapid
and sizeable monetary tightening that will further restrain growth,” Lindow said. Adding that “The increase in rates will serve as a further brake on an already weak economy, with an intensifying drought aggravating existing problems that have taken their toll on investor confidence over the past year.” The central bank slashed its 2016 growth forecast to 0.9 percent from 1.4 percent previously, while the International Monetary Fund sees growth at only 0.7 percent in 2016.
Moody’s said the drought would also stretch South Africa’s already wide trade and current account deficits. South Africa is targeting a budget deficit of less than 4 percent, and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is expected to announce a raft of cost cutting measures when he delivers his speech next Wednesday. Moody’s currently rates South Africa’s debt at two notches above sub investment, but with a negative outlook. Fellow ratings firms Fitch and Standard and Poor’s have South Africa just one notch above junk.

Domino posts 55 pc profit rise as pizza maker eyes global expansion
Domino’s brand which has operations in African countries including Kenya has been received a fanatical uptake across the globe in recent years.
Domino’s Australia, the largest franchisee for the Domino’s Pizza brand outside the US, has posted a more than 55 per cent rise in profits for the six months to December. The firm said net profit came to $32.4man increase of 56.7 per centcompared to the same period under review a year earlier. The Domino’s brand which has operations in African countries including Kenya has received a fanatical uptake across the globe in recent years. Globally, the Domino’s brand is owned by the New York-listed Domino’s Pizza Inc. Earlier this month, Domino’s UK and Domino’s Australia completed a joint venture to buy into the world›s
fourth-biggest pizza market, Germany. The joint venture, which will see Joey’s Pizza brand become Domino’s, is two-thirds owned by the Australian company, with the remainder owned by London-listed Domino’s, which already had operations in Germany. Meanwhile, Domino’s Australia has said the positive figures were as a result of “organic growth”. It claimed it had defied the current global economic environment. On Wednesday, the pizza giant also announced its second profit upgrade since December, sending its shares up more than 10 per cent. Domino’s Australia is listed in Sydney and formally called
Domino’s Pizza Enterprises where it holds the master franchise rights to the Domino’s brand in Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan and The Netherlands. With over 1,700 stores globally, the firm said its operations in Japan had increased by 48 stores in six months to December, while its Australia and New Zealand operations were on track to open more than 50 stores for the 12 months to June. In December, Domino’s launched its first ever 10 minute delivery store, with managing director Don Meij saying his goal over the coming three to five years was to see pizza’s delivered in Australia within 12 minutes.

he coveted and the most anticipated musical awards show The Grammy Awards took center stage on Monday night with winners shedding tears of joy and fellow nominees hoping for a scoop perhaps next year. As those who did not win wait for next year, Taylor Swift’s album ‘1989’ topped the awards as the Best Album of The Year. This was the second time Taylor won the Album of the Year award and she is the first in the awards history to do so. Taylor, in her acceptance speech noted with an emotional voice “As a woman there are people, who are out to bring you down in your journey to success, and all you have to do is focus on the goal.” Reading in between the lines, Taylor seems to be sending a message to Kanye West who has been trending for all the wrong reasons after releasing his album trashing Taylor. Away from Taylor and Kanye West, Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson have scooped Record of The Year award for ‘Uptown Funk’ as Kendrick Lamar scooped five awards out of 11 nominations, one nomination shy to attain the heights of Michael Jackson. The song of the year award went to ‘Thinking Out Loud’ by Ed Sheeran. Even so, there were glitches here are there during the ceremony as a whole. Apart from Rihanna, Adelle of the Hello sensation had to apologize on her social media page due to poor sound. According to Adelle, the microphones of the piano she was using had issues resulting in an irritating noise. These were not the only issues, Lauryn Hill was due to perform with The Weeknd but she was absent! Away from the glitches, there were stellar performances which revolved around tributes, with Lady Gaga, topping in perfection after having payed tribute to David Bowie. Gaga managed to bring out the best of the legend’s biggest hits including Changes, Rebel and Let’s Dance. As Gaga wowed, Morgan Heritage, who took home the best Reggae Award, promised to bring the award to Kenya given that they decided to reside here. The glitz and glam of the 58th Grammy awards took at the Staples, Los Angeles, California, heating up the Award season all the more as the Oscars rapidly approach. @duncan_x254

Foods to upset soothe an stomach WORKOUT
W
orking out and keeping fit is hard but ultimately very rewarding. But it does happen that we reach a slump in our weight loss journeys and losing those last few kilograms becomes a feat. no need to worry though, with a little tweaking here and there shedding the last few ounces of fat might come a lot easier than you might think.
e those s o l o t s y a w os last ten kil Exercise on an empty stomach
Even though we all know that working out without eating enough is incredibly unhealthy, the trick here is to work out a few hours after eating. Exercising this way ensures that food that was consumed earlier is being burned and metabolised more effectively than exercising immediately after eating.
Work out for longer
Adding a little bit more to your exercise routine can give you that little boost that’s need to get you to your fitness goals. As we continue to work out our bodies become accustomed to the movement and the training and this may actually be one of the main reasons for the slump. Intensifying and varying your workouts might help shake up things to get you out of the rut. Change the types of exercises that you do and make the workouts half an hour longer than they usually are.
Move more
This seems like a rather inane tip but it works. Walk around more, take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk to and from lunch breaks you could even walk home from work if that is a possibility. Take a long leisurely walk on the weekend or do something active like a hike.
Bananas are mild in taste and easy on the digestive tract making them quite easy to Break down
Stomach aches or indigestion can be caused by anything under the sun. Our bodies react differently to different foods and sometimes it takes a bad experience to realise that some are just not for you. Normally when a stomach upset occurs our appetites are not at their full potential and sometimes eating actually aggravates the situation but these ones just might be the key you’re looking for. Bananas The keyword to look out for is pectin. This substance which bananas are chock-full of, improves digestion by thickening and
firming up bowel movements. It is used in the treatment of diarrhoea by absorbing water in the body and makes us feel full. Bananas are mild in taste and easy on the digestive tract making them quite easy to break down. grEEn TEa Warm drinks are usually viewed as a source of comfort and in this case the word stays true. Herbal teas with ingredients such as peppermint and chamomile have a calming effect on the body including the relieving stomach aches and pains. Green teas alleviate
nausea and gas that can be caused by irritable bowels and are a quick solution to settling the stomach. WhiTE foods While undergoing a stomach ache spicy foods can have a disastrous effect on the bowels. Too much flavour can turn a bad situation worse so it’s always good to stick to bland food. White rice, boiled potatoes, plantains are good options in case hunger pangs arise during a stomach upset. These foods will make you feel full without adding stress to the digestive system.
HOME IMPROVEMENT
W
ith all the excitement that goes along with the arrival of a baby one aspect of new parenthood should be the immediate safety of the home. a baby that has just learned how to move around on its own can be in serious harm just by exploring its own house.
PrOOFING MADE EASy
ThE BaThrooM
A bathtub can be a minefield when it comes to child care. Things to watch out for would be never leave the bathtub filled with water when nobody is using it, the baby could go wandering into the bathroom and get into the water and drown. Get a plastic or foam cover for the taps and an area rug for the splash zone in a bathroom.
spaces? PoinTEd EdgEs
These can be almost countless in a house. From tables, cabinets and counters, the likely dangers posed by sharp corners in the home can
seem overwhelming. Instead of replacing all your furniture with plastic seats and tables invest in some edge and corner guards or use some foam insulation to line the edges of tables and stools.
ToilETs
Children are curious by nature and the toilet can seem like a treasure trove of sorts. To prevent them from falling in always ensure that the toilet cover is always down this will at least act as an obstruction. Also plastic toilet guards are invaluable in avoiding spills into the bowl.
sTairs
If you live in a house with stairs the only way to stop any accidents form happening is to install a baby gate or fence. They can be wood or plastic and must take some skill to open so that the baby has no real chance of getting through it.
Toys To keep your peTs busy Pets are special members of the family. We love our pets but they do require a lot of attention and care which includes mental and physical stimulation. Dogs have a lot of energy and cats love to scratch things so one way to combat this situation is through pet toys although they can be expensive especially since the purpose of these toys is essentially to be destroyed by
play. But it’s surprisingly easy to make toys for your pets that they will love and can be fashioned out of stuff lying around the house. Tug Toys for dogs Dogs love playing tug of war with their owners and with other dogs. Instead of buying some pricy tug toy all you need to do is get a stray knee-high tube sock or material such as an old
pillow case and put a tennis balls inside it. Make one knot to secure the ball and make sure it doesn’t escape from inside the sock. For the old pillow case make a knot to fasten the ball
and you can get more creative with this by shredding up the ends and braiding them or just leaving it as is. Wand Toys for caTs The internet has well documented evidence of cats’ love for cardboard boxes. Of course you could just get any old box big enough for your cat to fit in and the cat might probably have a great time hiding inside.

YOURSAY IEBC should get it right from registration time The right and opportunity to vote in the establishment of any government is at the very core of any democracy. Without it, democracy would be meaningless. Politicians have taken advantage of every encounter with the masses to appeal to “their people” to turn out in large numbers and register as voters. The clergy have used places of worship to call out the eligible faithful to register in large numbers. The calls for mass registration may necessarily be motivated by different objectives. For some it is an opportunity to build a strong base of loyal voters to help them ascend to or retain political office. For others, the calls are premised on a genuine desire to have as many Kenyans as possible participate in determining the country’s leadership through the ballot. Whatever the motivation is, there is no denying that now is the time for every Kenyan to get ready to participate in the democratic process of deciding the calibre of leaders at the national and county levels in the 2017 General Election. The calls and right to vote would be meaningless if the citizens who are eligible to vote are not registered voters. From precedence
the citizenry have adopted a culture of taking the last minute rush, which obviously lead to irregularities and pitfalls. The voter register is always put in to a credibility quagmire. Eligible voters should register on time. Initially there were fears that the budgetary allocation to the electoral body to undertake this exercise was grossly insufficient. But the good news is that development partners have come out strongly to support the exercise by contributing funds. The least that the IEBC can do is to ensure they are seen to be transparent in the allocation of the Biometric Voter Registration kits across the country. Where there are perceptions of skewed allocations, the electoral body should be proactive in explaining every situation to ride on the buy-in of as many stakeholders as possible throughout the registration exercise. Kenyan elections are known to be very emotive, the more reason why IEBC must invest credibly in the registration process and compiling of the master voters’ register. If the two processes are done in a just manner, the management of the actual voting would not be cast to doubt. — Nderitu, Donholm
Our youth must be part of development agenda According to the United Nations Population Fund, our world is home to 1.8 billion young people between the age of 10 and 24. This population is growing fastest in the poorest nations. In Kenya, the situation is not any different. This is a significant percentage that if well taken care of can puts our nation
at the dawn of reaping demographic dividends from an empowered population driving key sectors of the economy. The reverse is also true. A disempowered and disenfranchised youth population will not only be an economic burden to the nation, but also a major risk in the very existence of civility and progress.
For Kenya to realise her vision of being a middle-income country providing highquality life for all her citizens by 2030, and contribute to regional aspirations such as sustainable development goals, young people must be at the centre of it all. — Mzungu Mweupe

movies, one can get away with the perfect crime. In real life, it takes the courage of an honest investigator to unravel a crime. When allegations emerged that Sh791 million, was not lost, and later that it was stolen from NYS, red-herrings were thrown all over to shield Waiguru. The agency mandated to fight graft ‘cleared’ her of any wrong doing! How could she even be cleared when none of the
criminal cases touching on NYS had begun? How can EACC predict the outcome of the courts? How will they know what the judges will say? How could she be cleared before we are told all the beneficiaries of the money and whether she was also a recipient or not? We are keenly following and only hope that justice be our shield and defender. — Anonymous
Why did Kabura wait until now to open up? We try to protect our image, reputation and credibility by omitting, glossing over and denying even the obvious. We blindly invest in a get-rich-quick scheme, but time to pay the piper soon overtakes us and we consequently get burned. Am saying this in reference to the businesswoman Josephine Kabura’s confession of being involved in the Sh791 million NYS scam. Being a ‘passover lamb’ is not a child play and many who tried it including the biblical Peter faltered and stopped in midstride save for Jesus of Nazareth. Above all, folly of accepting to die for the cause of another comes when at the last minute you want to peel the mask and tell the truth hoping to extricate
yourself from the situation. None will believe your story. I think Kabura had humble time to tell investigation agencies all she knows regarding the scandal, but she chose to decline and hide fire under her bosom. To examine Kabura’s revelation empirically, the contents of her new version-contrary to her original incriminating content- may not be taken into consideration in the final judgment because of its equivocal nature and therefore the jury may be speaking just to compensate the wrongful incrimination of the former CS whom she accused of implicating her in the saga. It is too late madam Kabura. Better say earlier or never say die. — Phabian Jr
Youthful leaders have performed badly With the advent of devolution, the youth won many seats than in any other election in the country’s history, but so far the youthful leaders have not lived to the electorate expectation. At the county levels, youthful leaders some of whom didn’t even own houses leave alone cars are now living
lavishly, drinking heavily and scheming for opportunities to embezzle county funds. They make money from sitting allowances or being ‘bought’ to pass bills and no confidence votes against governors. Most leaders are not keen on service delivery to the people and their oversight roles at county and national

SPORTS BRIEFS Nadal pips compatriot in Rio Open campaign
Top seed and 2014 champion Rafael Nadal began his Rio Open campaign with victory over compatriot Pablo Busta 6-1, 6-4 match. The former World Number One landed five of seven break point opportunities in the 80 minutes encounter to book a second-round tie with Nicolas Almagro. Nadal carries a 13-1 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Almagro. Busta, the youngest of 14 Spaniards in the Top 100, was looking for his first career win over a Top 10 opponent. Against Nadal, he would have to win for the first time in three encounters. And he did not make the start he had hoped for, being broke to love for 2-0 on Quadra Guga Kuerten. Nadal secured a second break for 5-1 and served out the opening set 6-1 on his second set point before rain suspended the match. When they resumed, Nadal secured the early break for 2-1, the first of five consecutive breaks between the pair, before serving it out 6-4 after one hour and 22 minutes.
AK boss temporarily steps aside over bribery claims
Cameroon beat Egypt to claim Rio 2016 berth Hosts Cameroon beat Egypt in the final of the Women’s African Olympic Volleyball Qualification tournament to book a place at Rio 2016. Cameroon overturned a 2-1 deficit to win on a tie-break; 25-14, 25-27, 21-25, 25-23, 15-7. Spiker Nana Tchoudjang led Cameroon’s scorers with 21 points, followed by middle blocker Stephanie Fotoso with 19. Victory sees Cameroon become the seventh nation to qualify for the Rio 2016 women’s volleyball tournament. They join host nation Brazil as well as China, Serbia, Russia, Argentina and the United States. Egypt will now compete in an intercontinental qualifier due to be held in the period from May 14 to June 5. Among the countries lying in wait are Colombia and Puerto Rico, the third placed teams from the South American and North, Central America and Caribbean qualifiers respectively. Kenya completes the four team line-up with a win against Algeria to take the bronze medal in Yaoundé.
Gatlin vows to defeat fastest man, Bolt in Rio
Controversial US sprinter Justin Gatlin has vowed to defeat the World’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, at the Rio Olympics later this year. Gatlin is seeking revenge after Bolt put a troubled build-up behind him to beat the American and retain his world 100m title in Beijing last year. The prospect of another clash between Bolt and Gatlin sets the tone for an epic 100m showdown, during the summer Olympics in Brazil from August 5. “I’m going to win. We are bringing it (gold medal) back to the USA. We are going to bring it back to the USA, to LA to New York,” declared Gatlin. “We are going on a tour around the country with it around my neck like a gold chain.” Although Gatlin came into the final in Beijing last year on a 28-race unbeaten run, Bolt beat him at the death to snatch victory by one hundredth of a second. Gatlin says he considers himself the closest threat Bolt has ever had and he is working hard to be even better.
Athletics Kenya chief executive Isaac Mwangi stepped aside after being adversely mentioned by suspended athletes in doping scandal. He has however denied the allegations.
The Athletics Kenya (AK) chief executive has step down temporarily amid allegations he asked athletes for bribes to reduce doping bans. Isaac Mwangi denies wrongdoing but has left his post for 21 days while world governing body IAAF investigates the claims. The World Anti-Doping Agency said it was “most disturbed” by the claims. “The allegations have caused me a lot of mental anguish,” Mwangi said in a letter to Athletics Kenya. “I am anxious to have my name cleared.” Two suspended athletes claimed Mwangi had asked for money in exchange for more lenient punishments - allegations Mwangi said were “unsubstantiated”. Long serving Athletics Kenya administrative secretary Susan Kamau has taken over as the acting CEO. Last week, BBC reported that Kenya had missed a deadline to prove to Wada it was tackling cheating in athletics, following a string of positive drugs tests and corruption allegations. It will be placed on a ‘watch-list’ of nations at risk of breaching the agency’s code, and could then be declared non-compliant and ultimately banned from international competition - as has happened with Russia’s athletes. Kenya, whose athletes are dominant in distance running, topped the medal table at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing with seven gold medals. But since 2011, more than 40 of its athletes have failed drugs tests. Three other senior officials at Athletics Kenya were suspended last year by the IAAF while an investigation took place into allegations of “subversion” of the anti-doping process in Kenya and “improper diversion” of funds received from Nike. Vice-president David Okeyo, a council member for the IAAF, president Isaiah Kiplagat, and Joseph Kinyua, a former treasurer of the national association, all deny any wrongdoing. @elvince_x254
Hamilton dominance not good for F1 future: Vettel Interest in Formula One could fall even further if Lewis Hamilton’s dominance continues, Sebastian Vettel has warned. In an outspoken attack on the eve of the new season made on his personal website, Vettel claimed F1 had become too lost in technology and the focus should return to the drivers. Vettel was accused of turning people off the sport when he won four straight championships from 2010 to 2013. This intervention almost exactly mirrors criticism
of his reign made a few years ago by Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and others. But Hamilton and Mercedes’ dominance has been unprecedented in its scale. They have won 32 of the last 38 races and with very few rule changes over the winter, the team head into this season as overwhelming favourites, even if there are hopes Vettel’s Ferrari have stepped up their challenge. While Vettel was cautious on his team’s chances, he was remarkably
frank on the state of the sport. “In short, I think the sport should be in the spotlight and it should be about which driver is the fastest,” the four-time champion said. “Today the car plays an important role, like it did in the past. But we shouldn’t get lost in overcomplicated rules. Our audience has to be able to identify with our cars again. At the moment F1 is just too complex and we’re lacking sound. “The dominance of Mercedes in
the past two years took away a lot of excitement for the fans. Plus the new rules focus too much on details. I think we have to be careful not to lose the roots of motor racing and I certainly hope the cars of the future will be more within their grasp.” Formula One has been trapped in a debate about what it should be for years, but this was dramatically heightened with the introduction of more efficient, but quieter, hybrid engines at the start of 2014.

Gor Mahia’s Collins Okoth, Gerge Odiambo and Enock Agwanda celebrate a goal against CNaPS at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.
Gor take on Chemelil in title defence opener Defending SportPesa League champions Gor Mahia will kick off their title defence against Chemelil Sugar FC this evening at Moi Stadium, Kisumu. K’Ogalo will want to set the record straight to the doubting Thomases that they are still a force to reckon with after two back-to-back losses to Bandari in the DStv Super Cup and to CNaps in the CAF Champions League first leg match. However, Gor will meet a stubborn Chemelil that boast of proper preseason preparations. The Millers know the importance of beating the Champions and head coach Mike Baraza has not hidden his dreams. “With the match being played in Kisumu, K’Ogalo faithful will throng the venue which is a boost to them, but we trained well during the pre-season
we will go for the three points,” he said. “We did not do well last season because we started badly and this time round we have to correct the mistake in time. We have a new squad and the boys are ready for the job,” said Baraza. Baraza will rely on Hillary Echesa, Victor Maji, Stephen Wakanya, David Ojwang’ and new recruit Erustus Mwaniki to break K’Ogalo’s defence. Gor could be stronger today bearing in mind that some of their new signings are available after missing the last two matches with injuries and CAF registration challenges. Head coach Frank Nutall could tweak his starting line-up as he looks for his to winning team. New recruit Francis Kahata is fit to start his first competitive game for Gor having missed the last two matches and winger Innocent Wafula is
back in training and could feature for Nuttal today. Jackson Saleh and Luke Ochieng could also start in place of Harun Shakava, who is a major doubt, after picking a knock during CNaPS match. Gor will be boosted by the return of midfield maestro Khalid Aucho after a long injury lay-off, but will still be without Ali Abondo, who is currently on trials with South African side Ajax Cape Town. Wafula and Aucho, who missed Gor Mahia’s 1-0 loss to Bandari FC in the season curtain raiser DSTV Super and g a CAF match against CNaPS at the Nyayo National Stadium. Jacob Keli and Enock Agwanda will lead the search of goals against Chemelil and hopefully the duo can start banging in the goals. The match will kick off at 3pm. @Mjunior_x254
Chelsea to revive their CL chances at home after defeat From Back page
As the visitors d r a g g e d themselves back into the match, Ibrahimovic scored against the run of play. Indeed, were it not for Kevin Trapp’s fingertips diverting Diego Costa’s header onto the crossbar, the Blues would have been ahead before the Swede scored his first goal against them. Ibrahimovic’s free-kick struck Mikel en route to beating Courtois, but the Nigeria midfielder quickly made amends by capitalising on poor PSG defending from a corner. With John Terry and Kurt Zouma injured, Chelsea were without their
first-choice centre-backs. But the makeshift partnership of Gary Cahill - who blocked bravely from Blaise Matuidi - and Branislav Ivanovic withstood wave after wave of second-half PSG attacks until they were eventually breached in the closing stages. They were ably supported by Courtois, who made a series of saves, though he was culpable for allowing Cavani to thread the ball between his legs and in at the near post. Terry’s hamstring injury resulted in a promotion for Ghana defender Baba Rahman, and the left-back played his part in the Blues’ rearguard display.

Chelsea see blues
Edinson Cavani came off the bench to help Paris St-Germain beat Chelsea 2-1 and hand manager Guus Hiddink his first defeat since he took charge of the London club late last year. The hosts went ahead through Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s deflected free-kick. But John Mikel Obi scored a precious away goal, capitalising on some terrible defending to sweep home a deserved leveller from six yards. Chelsea’s stoic defending had them on course for a draw, before Cavani steered home Angel di Maria’s pass. The 29-year-old Uruguay striker, who has been used primarily as back-up to Ibrahimovic this season, scored moments after substitute Oscar spurned a chance for the visitors. But with the second leg to come at Stamford Bridge on March 9, the Blues are still very much in contention thanks to Mikel’s goal - and Thibaut Courtois’ late save from

Ibrahimovic. “Scoring away is always good. I’m never happy with a loss but it’s not a dramatic loss.” Hiddink said after the match. Elsewhere, Benfica overcame Zenit St Petersburg 1-0 at home after Oliveira Jonas’ injury-time goal at the Estadio da Luz. Neither team really ever got going in Portugal and it looked destined to finish goalless until Jonas popped up with his 25th goal of the season, shortly after Zenit left-back Domenico Criscito was sent off for a second yellow card. The Champions League last 16 first leg ties continue tonight when Italian club AS Roma host 2014 winners Real Madrid in Rome. Belgian club Gent will also welcome Wolfsburg of Germany in a fixture which is new territory for both clubs. It is the first time that either the Belgians or the Germans have qualified for the knockout rounds of the Champions League, and only one of their historic paths will continue. Meanwhile Chelsea will have to regroup quickly in what is a difficult week, with last night’s loss to be followed by an FA Cup tie against Manchester City on Sunday. With their Premier League title defence already over, Guus Hiddink’s men will know by the end of the weekend whether they can salvage anything from a disappointing domestic season. But whatever happens against City, they will be hopeful of progressing in this competition after a promising performance in the French capital. This is the third successive season these teams have been drawn against each other, and both previous ties were decided on away goals. Chelsea progressed in 2014 despite losing the first leg 3-1 in Parc des Princes - though admittedly they were a more formidable outfit than this vintage but were beaten last season. PSG are Ligue 1 leaders and are unbeaten in 44 league games and lead second-placed Monaco by 24 points, though b e fore the match Hiddink questioned the quality of the French top flight. There is no doubting the quality of players at PSG’s disposal, however, with Blanc able to recall the likes of Ibrahimovic, Marco Verratti and Lucas Moura after resting them at the weekend. The hosts were by far the superior side in the opening 17 minutes, enjoying 74% of possession, but all they had to show for it was a long-range Lucas strike. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14
