tate House has denied that President Uhuru Kenyatta agreed a deal with the opposition on the fate of IEBC. Mr Kenyatta on Tuesday met with opposition leaders Raila Odinga and Moses Wetangula after which it was reported that they agreed to form a tenmember team to negotiate on the fate of IEBC commissioners. But State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu in a statement last evening dismissed the reports. “No such agreement was struck, as it would have been inconsistent with President Kenyatta’s stand on the subject which is that any discussion on the IEBC or any other constitutional body must be done within the confines of the law,” Esipisu said. He said President Kenyatta is expecting the Justice and Legal Affairs to handle the matter as it falls within their jurisdiction in Parliament. In his address to the nation yesterday during Madaraka Day celebrations, President Kenyatta told the opposition to respect the legal institutions to solve any problem they might have on the constitutional organs. “If you love this country then you must obey the letter of the constitution. This country belongs to all of us so let us come together and work together,” President Kenyatta said. A statement was dispatched to newsrooms late Tuesday confirmed the State House meeting took place although not much information was divulged by the Presidential press team. “After the luncheon, the president, accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto, held a brief meeting with CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Let’s not slide back to the 2007 post-poll chaos, president Uhuru cautions nation President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday called on Kenyans to live in unity and shun divisive politics that could lead the country plunging back to the 2007/08 post-election violence. President Kenyatta said the country has made significant progress and that patriotism should prevail among Kenyans. Speaking yesterday in Nakuru’s Afraha stadium where he led the country in marking the 53rd Madaraka day, President Kenyatta said all different communities in the country should live for one single national purpose. “In 2007, we sorely tested this covenant. But when we realized our folly, we paused to reflect, we retraced our steps and found the path to peace by painstakingly negotiating and ultimately ratifying a new Constitution in 2010. The scars of 2007 remind us of the shame of political competition without limits or wisdom. But our patriotism prevailed; and today, we take pride as a nation in showing ourselves and the world that we have brought good out of troubled times, and that we have learned to limit political conflict, so that it no longer threatens the selfgovernment that our forefathers so painfully won,” he said. President Kenyatta also urged leaders across all political divide to put the interest of the country first. “I want to remind all leaders that this country is bigger than all of us, nobody can claim that he is more important than the people in this country,” he said. He said the national covenant put

They joined together in a national covenant that would bind them, and all who came after them,” President Kenyatta said.
“In making that covenant, they vowed to build a nation that would earn its place in the world: a nation in which poverty, disease and ignorance would have no home. The nationalist covenant agreed all those years ago still binds us together,” he added. “They also declared that all men would be equal under this covenant. With this exchange of promises, all of us became Kenya; and Kenya became
all of us” In underscoring the government achievements, President Kenyatta said more than a trillion shillings to the counties in the last three years. President Kenyatta said the money has gone to the grassroots, bringing paved roads where there were none, clean water to households and medicines to some of the most vulnerable Kenyans.
The President also said the government has built more kilometres of roads in the last three years than were built in the first 50 years of independence. He added that an additional 2.2 million households have been connected to power since 2003, and 22,000 primary schools to the national grid

We will form our team by tomorrow (today) and that team is due to meet with the one formed by the government so that we can dialogue on the IEBC issue,” Wetangula said. Same sentiments were also echoed by Odinga who also warned that should the team fail to hold dialogue
by tomorrow then the opposition will resort back to their weekly antiIEBC demonstrations. “We will nominated our people and they will also bring their people, the team should have dialogue failure to which we will be back to the streets as IEBC must go,” Odinga said. Odinga admitted that he indeed participated in the appointment of the current IEBC commissioners during the grand coalition government but retorted that the commissioners are currently facing corruption cases hence can’t be allowed to preside over the next poll. “When we appointed the Commissioners with the Grand Coalition government, we did not know about Eurobond or the Chicken Gate scandal. However, the Head of State lashed out at county bosses accusing them of mismanagement and lack of prioritising their development agenda. “This money has been put in good use although in some instances it has not been well managed or used for the purpose it was meant for,” asserted the president. He maintained that his administration would continue to support devolution for the benefit of the locals even State seeks to weed out corrupt individuals. Two women parliamentarians have vowed to intensify campaigns for the re-election and promised to push for election of more women in various elective seats during the next year’s General Elections. Marsabit County Woman Representative Nasra Ibren and her Wajir counterpart Fatuma Ibrahim said following the rejection of the Gender Bill recently, they will mobilize women to elect their own in order to increase the number of women MPs, Senators and Governors. We want to ensure the number goes up to 200 MPs in next year’s general election,” said Mrs Fatuma Ibrahim. Obama Slams Trump over Wall Street policies U.S. President Barack Obama slammed Donald Trump’s proposal to weaken Wall Street reforms and touted his own economic record on Wednesday during a trip to a city he visited three weeks into his presidency that has recovered from its recession lows. Obama’s remarks in Elkhart, Indiana, foreshadowed the arguments he is likely to make on the campaign trail this fall against the likely Republican presidential nominee. Obama did not mention Trump by name, but he lambasted the billionaire’s policy proposals, particularly his promise to dismantle most of the U.S. Dodd-Frank financial regulations. “How it is that somebody would propose that we weaken regulations on Wall Street? Have we really forgotten what just happened eight years ago?” Obama said, sounding exasperated. “The notion that you would vote for anybody who would now allow them to go back to doing the same stuff that almost broke our economy’s back makes no sense. I don’t care whether
you are a Republican, or a Democrat or an independent, why would you do that?” Obama, who leaves office in January, is eager to have a Democrat succeed him to ensure his legacy on the economy, healthcare reform and climate change continues. By going to Elkhart, the president sought to illustrate the success of his policies in the face of Republican opposition. His trip to the city in early 2009 came in the middle of a fight for the U.S. Congress to pass a roughly $800 billion economic stimulus package. Elkhart had an unemployment rate as high as 19.6 percent in 2009, the White House said; it is now around 4 percent. Indiana’s Republican Governor Mike Pence said the city had recovered despite Obama’s policies, not because of them. “I believe the people of Elkhart ... have brought our economy back in spite of the burdens that higher taxes, mandates and increasing regulations

He name checked Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton, by noting deficits had fallen under both of their administrations, and he said Republicans had helped the rich by blaming poor people, minorities, feminists, and immigrants for squeezing the economic wellbeing of

Cat owners warned of virus similar to HIV
June.
Kenyans who keep cats as pets in their homes have been urged to act with caution after a cat was found to have a virus similar to that of HIV present in humans. The cat’s blood was found to have Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) which belongs to the same family as that of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It had exhibited signs of weakness, diarrhoea and weight loss. The cat’s curious disease was tested at the veterinary laboratories of Pathologists Lancet Kenya. It is the first serologically confirmed case of FIV in the veterinary community of Kenya. The cat which is a resident of Karen was tested by the veterinary pathologist Dr. Dhaval Shah who confirmed that the blood results were positive with FIV. “We got a case from a clinician in Karen about a cat that was showing signs of weakness and was not eating. We ran the serum sample on the test and it was found positive for FIV,” Dr. Shah said. FIV is transmitted through saliva, lickings and bite wounds from infected cats. The virus has no known cure just like its
human counterpart and has no antiretrovirals to suppress the condition. The virus causes the cat version of AIDS by degrading their immune system, leaving them vulnerable to a host of opportunistic diseases. Dr. Shah said that they had previously had cases of cats whose clinical features and peripheral blood findings corresponded to FIV but were unable to diagnose them effectively since they lacked the equipment. “The serological confirmation has been made possible through new diagnostic kits that we now have in our laboratory for defecting the FIV antibodies,” Shah added. The veterinary pathologist was however quick to warn Kenyans not to throw out their beloved pets as the feline virus could not be passed on to humans. “Humans cannot be infected by FIV nor can cats be infected by HIV,” he said. Dr. Shah said that cat owners can protect their pets from the virus by keeping them indoors and reduce contact with free-roaming cats which tend to carry the virus. The Kenya Veterinary Association has also raised concerns over the large number of stray cats in cities that could be infected with the virus. @harrison_x254
Garissa university college attack mastermind Mohamed Kuno killed
NEWS 5
THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 2016
The leader of the attack on Garissa University College has been killed, officials both in Kenya and Somalia say. Kenya said Mohamed Kuno was behind the attack in April 2015 that killed 148 people. Regional forces in Somalia said he was one of 16 people killed in an overnight raid on their convoy in Kismayo, a port city in southern Somalia. Four of those who died were reportedly senior members of the al-Shabab militant group. News of his death is a huge boost for Somalia and its allies in the fight against al-Shabaab. The news of Kuno’s death was confirmed in a press conference held by Abdirashid Janan, the security minister in the Somali region of Jubaland. After the Garissa attack, Kenya’s government put up a bounty of Sh20 million on Kuno’s head and any information that could lead to his capture. A Kenyan-Somali, he was a headmaster at a madrassa, in Garissa until 2007. But then he crossed the border into Somalia to join the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC), which at one point controlled much of the country. When the UIC collapsed, he joined the militant group Hizbul Islam, which in 2010 merged with al-Shabab. He had several aliases but was best known as Mohamed Dulyadin, which means ambidextrous in the Somali language. He was thought to be in mid30s. In the university attack on 2 April last year, four al-Shabab militants shot students in their dormitories at
the Garissa University College before rounding up and killing dozens more. The four gunmen were killed during the siege but it took 16 hours for antiterrorism forces to bring the attack to an end. It was the deadliest attack in Kenya since al-Qaeda’s bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi in 1998, which
killed 213 people. It also came a year and half after alShabab fighters targeted the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, killing 67 people. Kuno is alleged to have been behind several attacks on Kenyan soldiers who are fighting al-Shabab in Jubaland. He was also blamed for attacks on Kenyan civilians in Kenya itself.
Mohamed Kuno alias Gamadheere who is said to have been the mastermind of last year’s al-Shabaab attack on Garissa University was reportedly killed in a US drone in Southern Somalia on Tuesday night. Inspector general of Police Joseph Boinnet said he was planning more attacks on Kenyan soil by the time he was killed.
MPs among the dead in Mogadishu hotel blast Gunmen stormed a hotel in the centre of the Somali capital Mogadishu, with at least 10 dead and 50 wounded. The attackers entered the Ambassador Hotel on Maka al-Mukarama street after setting off a car bomb at the gates outside, witnesses said. Somalia’s state news agency said two MPs were killed in the blast, with another four rescued. The al-Shabab militant group was quick to say it was behind the attack. Correspondents said the explosion was one of the largest to hit the city and the scale of destruction is huge. Somalia’s state news agency Sonna said at least 50 people were hurt and that the death toll was likely to rise. It named the dead MPs as Abdullahi Jama Kabaweyne and Mohamoud Mohamed Gure. The head of the city’s Amiin ambulance service said the main Medina hospital is overcrowded. “I was the first person to reach scene. The damage was enormous,” Dr Abdulkadir Andirahman Haji Aden said. “My brother and his son were among those injured. We are now in Medina hospital and it is overcrowded with wounded people. I have never seen something like this.” Al-Shabab, which is battling the UNbacked government, was driven from Mogadishu in 2011 but still remains a potent threat and frequently carries out attacks in the city.

KEBS destroys substandard goods valued at Sh5 million The Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) has intensified its fight against the distribution of substandard goods in the country by destroying counterfeit products estimated at Sh5 million. Through market surveillance and inspection, the regulator managed to bag and tag the products in Kisumu earlier this week. They were later destroyed at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) incinerator, also in Kisumu. The products included medical appliances such as syringes, electrical appliances, electronic household appliances and equipment, motorcycle inner tubes, alcoholic drinks, cosmetics among others. Last year Kebs destroyed goods valued at Ksh. 57.7 million. Kebs, Regional Manager, Lake Region, Mr. Joe Ombwayo, who witnessed the procedures, said this exercise is a warning to traders and manufacturers of such products. Ombwayo, also called on Kenyans to be vigilante when purchasing any goods and always to check on KEBS marks of quality. The regional manager further stressed that Kebs core mandate is to avail standards that are used to facilitate trade, protecting consumers from harmful and poor quality goods and finally protecting the environment. He urged all stakeholders to cooperate with Kebs officers whenever they visit their outlets. During the same function, Kebs called on Kenyans to make use of the SMS code service of 20023 to check if a product has been certified. @Dennis_x254
Letshego in Sh27.5 billion investment to support businesses through loans
Letshego, a financial institution that provides credit services to small and micro-enterprises, has today announced a Sh27.5 billion facility to help entrepreneurs run and manage their businesses over the next five years. Speaking when officially launching the program, Letshego CEO Charles Njoroge said the cash comes at an opportune time when Kenyan youth are banking on innovation to create employment opportunities. “This is a milestone in Letshego as we will be providing loans to customers online any time without even visiting our outlets,” he said. Commenting on the move, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich noted that more private sector stakeholders should emulate Letshego and bring in more financial access to the Kenyan people. He said the government, through his Ministry, is willing to help private institutions whose goals are in line with the country’s vision 2030. “We at the National Treasury are willing to support key private players whose
offer financial inclusion in financial sector especially when supporting entrepreneurs,” CS Rotich said. However the CS expressed concerns over high interest rates as a key challenge facing the sector. He said financial inclusion from private players has raised the number of bankers to 70 per cent up from 25 per cent as it was two years ago. “Increase in financial access will accelerate the ease of doing business thus improving the livelihoods of our youth, create jobs as well as create wealth to our nation,” he said. Rotich had earlier this year stressed the implementation of several innovative initiatives and reforms in Kenya’s financial sector, which had garnered remarkable by expanding financial inclusion. In the recently published 2016 FinAccess Survey results, formal financial inclusion has nearly tripled over the past ten years, and exclusion is down by more than a half over the same period. A recent Brookings Financial and
Digital Inclusion Project ranked Kenya number one in the world for leveraging technology to drive inclusion. In this regard, the theme of today’s conference “Despite our good progress in expanding financial inclusion, the current level of private sector credit in Kenya, at about 40 per cent of Gross Domestic Product, is still far below the levels recorded in comparable emerging economies such as Malaysia, South Africa and Mauritius,” Rotich added. He mentioned that the rate of a country’s economic growth is driven by investments and these investments are largely dependent on the ease with which productive enterprises access funding to transform their viable ideas and opportunities into productive ventures. “Limited access to credit by the private sector is thus a hindrance to investment and to economic growth,” he said. Be ready for plain packaging of cigarettes, ministry tells sector
The Ministry of Health has reignited its campaign against the tobacco industry with a new theme that seeks to stop manufacturers from effectively marketing their products. Cabinet Secretary for Health Dr. Cleopa Mailu says the industry has continued to design packages that make the products more attractive to promote tobacco consumption despite the harmful effects involved. Speaking during a just concluded ‘No Tobacco Day’ event at a Nairobi hotel, Dr. Mailu added that Kenya has “continued to mark this important annual global event every year with the tobacco control community to demonstrate the Government shared responsibility to work together to end the tobacco epidemic.” “This year’s No Tobacco day theme “get ready for plain (standardized) packaging of tobacco products” is timely because evidence shows that Tobacco packaging is a mobile advertisement used to promote consumption of tobacco products,” the CS said. “My ministry shall continue to provide leadership at national, regional and global levels in the ratification of the WHO - Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, development and implementation of key guidelines and protocols,” Dr. Mailu reiterated. The Ministry has since confirmed that a formal plan and timeline for the implementation of plain packaging will be developed in line with national tobacco control programme and priorities. This, said the CS, will go hand in hand with strengthening of the existing health warnings and the ban on misleading packaging and labeling. The Ministry states that the move will ensure that bans on advertising, promotion and sponsorship are comprehensive. “Recently, we have witnessed a major milestone by the tobacco control stakeholders when a case filled by the
industry against the tobacco regulation was defeated. These regulations will assist the country to institute pictorial health warnings on tobacco products which will further deter people from consuming these products,” Dr. Mailu
noted. During the event, the CS thanked all the line Ministries, Government agencies, civil society and development partners who have remained vigilant and supportive over the past years and continue to offer what Dr. Mailu termed
as invaluable technical and financial support. “I call upon all state and nonstate actors to continue partnering with my ministry towards reducing the tobacco epidemic,” the CS said. @Dennis_x254

Nakuru War Memorial Hospital bags top best Nurses’ trophy THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 2016
Nakuru War Memorial Hospital’s nurses have emerged the country’s top best after they scored 40 points out of the possible 50 in the Nestle Nutrition Institute Africa and National Nurses Association of Kenya Quiz. The quiz questions were drawn from four areas including: breastfeeding, nutrition, pediatrics and general knowledge. Nurses from the Aga Khan University Hospital, who were also the 2015 champions, were held in a 30-points draw with their counterparts from Coast General Hospital before they were subjected to a tie-breaker which Ag Khan nurses won to emerge second Other hospitals that were represented in the contest include: Murang’a County Hospital, Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital. The contest was overseen by Professor Fredrick Were, Dean Faculty of Medicine at The University of Nairobi who is also a member of the Nestlé Nutrition Institute Africa board. The NNIA-NNAK Nurses’ Quiz, which was launched in 2015, is aimed at refreshing the nurses’ knowledge (in a fun and exciting way) and also to emphasize and celebrate the key role nurses play in the society. Kenya is estimated to have a total of 46, 000 registered nurses practicing in both public and private sector of which 35percent are said to between 40 to 49 years. The country has a ratio of five nurses per 10,000 people while the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 250 health care workers
(doctors, nurses and midwives) per 100,000 population. “The Nestlé Nutrition Institute Africa provides a good platform for nurses to build their skills, learn from their peers and also keep themselves informed of the latest research and developments in the field of nutrition,” said Professor Fredrick Were, Dean Faculty of Medicine at The University of Nairobi who is also a member of the Nestlé Nutrition Institute Africa board. According Mr. Chandan Ghosh, Country Business Manager, Nestlé Nutrition at Nestlé Equatorial Africa, NNIA is committed to the professional
resilience. This theme was extremely appropriate for Kenya as we appreciate the capacity of our nurses to respond and adapt to outbreaks such those experienced in the country in the last few months,’ said Winnie Shena, the Chairperson of the National Nurses Association of Kenya. According to Ms. Shena, the Nurses’ Quiz will form part of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of all health practitioners and will be used to recognize ‘the Nurse of the Year’ starting in 2017. @ kevin_x254

Apart from the Annual Nurses’ Quiz Contest, NNIA carries other activities pivotal to Kenya’s medical sector including offering scholarships for health care professionals, scientific workshops and carrying out continuous professional development for health practitioners among others. “The international Nurses Day was set aside as a way of celebrating, appreciating and rewarding the role nurses play in the society. This year’s theme was Nurses a Force of Change: Improving health systems’
global travel market,” said Lisa Horne, general manager – South Africa at SiteMinder. Earlier this year, Jovago launched an extranet application for its hotel clients, allowing them to reach operational excellence with the online channel by giving hotel managers real-time access to, and control over, their room rates and inventory. Hotel managers whose properties are listed on Jovago.com say they are excited about the opportunities the website’s partnership with SiteMinder will bring. “We have already seen a 15 to 25 per cent increase in sales and the potential for more traffic in business is even higher, which is testament to the quality of service Jovago.com offers,” says Sally Mwasaru, e-sales manager at Prideinn @Dennis_x254 Paradise.

ithout a doubt the winner of the 11th Annual Groove Awards was none other than Mercy 3 categories including Female Artiste of the Year and Song of the Year and she deserved all the props in the world. Her song Mwema has been hard to get away from for the past year, staying on rotation on not only gospel radio but also mainstream stations. Kasarani Stadium was an interesting on to say the least. Hover boards were the red carpet accessory to have even when it was time to present an award on stage. Hosts DJ Soxxy and Size 8 did a commendable job, but only when Dr Ofweneke was not in the mix. Add him into the equation and there were is not to say that he isn’t funny but his brand of humour was a little distracting for the show. Plus, there’s that time Size 8 had to kraal he and DJ Soxxy when they were getting a little caught up like an overwhelmed kindergarten school teacher! It would be a great injustice not to mention that there were sheep present in this year’s Groove
DJ Crème seeks divine intervention at Groove
Kelele Takatifu.
If you all thought that DJ Crème De la Crème was down and out after he was denied entry into the USA at the Dallas terminal, you thought wrong! The embattled DJ who immigration officials questioned about his leaked sex tape pulled a surprise stunt gracing the Groove awards ceremony held at the Safaricom stadium indoor arena yesterday. ‘ Going by this year’s Groove Award’s theme ‘Come as you Are” it would be safe to say the DJ went to the event ‘as he is’ and maybe, just maybe spinning the wheels of steel as a gospel DJ Crème Music DJ in the near future!
This year saw many theatrics and new entrants, comedy ruled and performances were electric.11 years and counting it was yet another unforgettable ceremony, without Bahati and Willy Paul and they were not missed!
Awards. Where Njugush got them and how they were allowed on stage will remain a mystery forever. One even tried to get away from him in hilarious fashion but he managed to wrangle it into place! One of the most memorable performances of the night came from Pitson, who also happened to be golden boy of the evening, with the song Uvumilivu. A touching poignant song that talks of faith during trying times and his other piece, a collaboration with Derick Jones, was electrifying. Evelyn Wanjiru proved that big things come in small packages with the song Mungu Mkuu, her powerful voice echoed in the stands and took everybody to church in the most remarkable way. Stephen Kasolo, winner of the Eastern Counties Song of the Year award, was another great highlight. He brought his entire family on the stage to accept his award and he must have thanked absolutely everyone that all in good fun. Kanze Dena was an absolute breath of fresh air with her bubbly quick-talking coastal twang as she presented Size 8 with the Video of the Year award for Afadhali Yesu. And of course Size 8 was her very open, utterly honest self during her acceptance speech. In a great and unexpected turn of events DJ Covenant gave up his Talent to Watch award over to the media as a show of goodwill and peace in the country. Maybe in the hopes of inspiring a peaceful election. Although turn up has been better before, this year’s great, everyone dressed up (except for Njugush and his shorts), the new categories, the ‘Afro Pop Award’ that is, recognized the dynamic nature of gospel music in the country. And who can forget that they had the 7s up on stage. It

Do you know what your profile picture says about you?
Uploading a new profile picture can be a task that is loved and loathed with equal measure depending on the person doing the deed. For some it can be an entire production whereby a multitude of pictures are taken on their phones, numbers ranging in the hundreds sometimes, just to find the perfect fit. But exactly what that picture says to other people might differ greatly from what you as an individual want to express. One inadvertent effect that a profile picture could have is reveling things about your
personality that you might not think might be apparent from a simple picture. For example if your pictures are constantly being taken outdoors or while doing some activity outside could make people think that you are an active person who enjoys spending time tackling new adventures. This might not even necessarily be true but if that is the image that most occurs then that is how it will be interpreted. Another thing to watch out for would be who you include in your profile pictures. This is where things get tricky. If you want
your personal life to remain personal then it might be wise to keep pictures of whoever you are with off the internet. But if you are the sort of person who celebrates their love in a public way then filtering which photos go on the internet and which ones do not would be a better choice. Even though people love putting up pictures in the club or other similar places, for professional profiles it would be a safer bet to leave those out because you ever know who might be looking. @christine_x254

He and Norman Bates personified the smart seductive psychopath, but Hannibal wins because he eats people! There was no scarier thought than a creepy older guy climbing through your window at night just to feed on your tender flesh. The thing that made Hannibal scary was how he could so easily blend into the normal world without raising any suspicions. He was well-read, learned and let’s not forget he was a doctor; who just happened to acquire a taste in human flesh.
The scary thing about Freddy Krueger was how it was seemingly impossible to get away from him. He was in your dreams and in real life. Plus his bladehands and rubbery, burnt up face didn’t make things easier. We all remember how we would end up with a bad dream or having to crawl into our parents’ bed at night because we all thought Freddy was probably hiding our beds at night.

Mcheza launches online betting platform THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 2016
MCHEZA, one of Kenya’s top soccer betting companies, has launched its online gaming platform with a onestop website that provides a wide range of sports and markets in a move aimed at enhancing the player’s experience. In the online platform, the betting company has introduced 20 more sports disciplines to the massively popular football league to include rugby, tennis, volleyball, boxing, motorsports and basketball. Other disciplines are set to be introduced in the next few weeks. Football fans can now increase their chances of winning in over 100 markets provided. The website has also availed live betting functionality, as well as analysis and statistics on games, for an enhanced, interactive and versatile experience. MCHEZA has also announced a Sh100 bonus for players who register and play online, to enable customers sample the exciting features on the website they say is easy to use and navigate both on desktop and mobile. Speaking during the launch, Acumen Communications Limited Chief Executive Officer Peter Karimi said mCHEZA is also looking to further augment its footprint in the Kenyan market through the new platform that boasts of progressive and dynamic features. “In addition to playing on SMS, we are enhancing our customers’ online gaming experience, offering more sports and markets with world class research and statistics. Our customers
no longer need to click between websites to research and play since all they need is on the mCHEZA website. Live betting has also been incorporated to make gaming more exciting since they are able to monitor odds in real time,” Karimi said. Global gaming leader Intralot has provided mCHEZA with the most innovative gaming platform, unveiled at the ICE Gaming Conference in London in March 2016. Mr. Karimi acknowledged the importance of the mCHEZA partnership with Intralot by stating that their invaluable support has been integral to the company’s growth and success, offering world class service
delivery and gaming standards. “Partnering with a global leader in gaming creates opportunities for an emerging market like Kenya to enjoy superior standards of sports gaming. Their expertise enables us to deliver competitive products and services,” he said. Intralot Vice-President Business Development, Europe and Africa Antonis Markopuolos noted that the strategic partnership with mCHEZA has enabled them strengthen their presence in Africa. “Through our partnership, we understand the Kenyan market better,
and their input into the business enables us tailor make products that suit this market. The SMS platform proved successful, even when competition was online. We took our time to develop the most innovative online platform to ensure ours remains the most competitive and interactive offering in the market,” said Antonis. To register, new players should send the word ‘Cheza’ to 29888 to receive a confirmation code that will enable registration on the online platform. The customer’s user name is their phone number, and the four-digit code they received on SMS is used as the password. They are then able to
register their biodata and change their password to a memorable one. This, mCHEZA says, is an essential security feature. Players already registered via SMS will automatically receive individual pin codes for registration online. Introduction of the new platform adds to mCHEZA’s aggressive marketing drive to become the country’s premier sport gaming platform in the ever expanding gaming industry. Initiatives such as the all- expenses paid trips to some of the top league football matches including the finals of the Champions League and the Euro 2016 have seen the platforms customer base significantly grow. “We are thrilled about the new platform launch, this presents new and limitless opportunities for our customers to continue to enjoy the games they love and benefit from their passion. In return, we are continuously looking to better our customers’ experiences and also reward them for their support through our various prize schemes,” Mr Karimi added. MCHEZA is also using its platform to contribute to the growth of the sports industry in Kenya by supporting talent development through various initiatives like the partnership with Green Sports Africa, Sports Personality of the Year Awards established by sport legend Paul Tergat (SOYA), and rally ace Tejas Hirani among others to nurture talented athletes in Kenya.
Embattled Ivan Minnaert looks to strengthen AFC squad in window
AFC Leopards head coach Ivan Minnaert. He expects to strengthen his squad in this June transfer window which opened yesterday.
AFC Leopards coach Ivan Minnaert has hit the market in this mid-season transfer window in a desperate bid to strengthen to championship challenging quality an Ingwe side that has found the going in the league rather tough. Minnaert says that he currently doesn’t have the right quality of players at his disposal who would slug it out consistently with the league’s best, and that he hopes to add a good number of top-edge, experienced players in June. “We have to strengthen every area. We need a finisher, a number of midfielders, some good defenders and one quality goalkeeper. We have to create an allround team,” he said. Asked whether his preseason target of guiding Ingwe to their 14th KPL title still remains, the under pressure Minnaert admitted that that will now be difficult considering their position in the KPL log. “The target remains the same as we had before the interferences. I still want to win the league but that is now going to be difficult because of where we are in the KPL table,” he said. Leopards currently lie a lowly 11th in the league table. They enjoyed a brilliant start to the 2016 season, and were table leaders for two consecutive weeks in March. Their fortunes however started dwindling in early April where they succumbed to a shock 1-0 loss to
lowly ranked Nairobi City Stars. Ingwe recovered to beat Sofapaka 2-1 in their next game, but that turned out to be their last victory of the first leg. They actually went seven consecutive matches without a win much to the chagrin of their passionate fans. They fell further behind the log when the league’s Independent Disciplinary and Complaints Committee (IDCC) recently docked them three points for crowd trouble in their abandoned match against Ulinzi Stars two months ago that was awarded to the Kenya Defence Forces side. Last month, Minnaert made a bold statement by releasing nine of his players well ahead of the transfer window which opened yesterday. During that time, he stated that the players either lacked discipline, were too lazy or just could not be trained. Defender Eric Masika was among the casualties together with dreadlocked forward Khalid Jumaan. Minnaert said that despite rumours of an imminent exit at the club, he is there to stay. “I will not resign because I haven’t failed. We have just had some interference and I believe the management will solve things. We are in recruitment period and I am now focused on making a strong comeback when the league resumes,” said the former Rayon Sport tactician.

Euro 2016: The teams to watch In just over a week, the European Championship kick off in France much to rejoicing of many football fans who have had to do with no competitive football between June and August. The final squads have been submitted and the last tests have been played, and it is time to look ahead at what’s in store this summer. Here is what you need to know about who will be important in the championship. France – Home advantage aside, this is clearly a strong team. Although the 2000 winners have not been able to get past the quarter final since then, things are set to change. A young crop of new and exciting players has entered the fray. France look dangerous going forward, as Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Kingsley Coman have all shown this year. France’s success will depend on how well Didier Deschamps can get his team to do what he did so well: defend, defend, defend. Germany – To say the ride for Germany since winning the World Cup has been less than smooth is an understatement. Since the final, Germany has lost seven (7!) games. But even worse, the last time Die Mannschaft kept a clean sheet was against Gibraltar a year ago. Germany usually improves its performance dramatically for tournaments and that is exactly what will be required from the men in white this time round. Spain – Until their humiliation at the hands of Holland and Chile in 2014, the defending champions were considered unbeatable. Qualifying was a breeze for this team, but it will be interesting to see how they respond to a difficult group. Furthermore, with Carvajal injured and Saul and Isco not selected, three Champions League finalists are not in the final Spain squad. This will be Vincente del Bosque’s last
tournament, so it will be interesting to see if he can get the most out of what’s left of Spain’s “golden generation” as he has done thrice before. England – 50 years of hurt. That’s how long it has been since England last won a major tournament. Will it change this summer? Unlikely. Roy Hodgson has tried to strike a balance between the young guns and the old guard. He included three players with limited playing time this year in Jack Wilshere, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, while leaving out Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater. England is developing a good crop of young players, but this tournament is too soon to make an impact. Belgium – A young team looking to flourish. This team is full of talent through out with some standout midfielders in Kevin de Bruyne and Yannick Carrasco (scorer of Atletico’s equaliser in the Champions League final last Saturday). Beyond that, the team has firepower from Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard. However, Vincent Kompany will be a big miss at the back. Belgium is in a very difficult group with Italy, Ireland and Sweden, in which they are likely to expend a lot of energy. This team should see this as a test for 2020 – hopefully Marc Wilmots gets that time to develop his team’s football until then. Italy – The 2012 finalists have made some improvements. However, the team will be lacking youth and energy in the middle of the park due to the injury to Marco Verratti. The Juventus trio of Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli, will bring much needed experience at the back. However, this is not a classic Italian defensive side. It would be a mistake to underestimate Antonio Conte’s ability to coach this team, but
Belgian international striker Divork Origi. He is among the young talents to watch in this year’s Euro tournament which kicks off in France on June 10. Holders Spain and World Champions Germany are the favourites alongside hosts France, Belgium and Italy
given his squad selection one wonder’s if his mind might be on his new Chelsea job. What’s left? Well although the teams discussed are the pundit’s favourites for this championship, one should
also include Austria and Portugal in the mix. They both qualified easily for the final stages through tough groups. Austria had no problems against the likes of Sweden and Russia, while Portugal saw off Denmark and Serbia.
Overall, it will be interesting to see how the expanded Euro format plays out. But like every time there are surprises around the corner. Time to get excited!
Man City sign Germany star Gundogan Manchester City have signed Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund on a four-year deal. The 25-year-old, who will miss Euro 2016 and the start of the new Premier League season through injury, becomes the first signing for incoming City manager Pep Guardiola (pictured left). City have reportedly paid the Bundesliga side a fee of about £20m. “When I learned of City’s interest my heart was set on coming. Things have moved very quickly,” he said. The Premier League club’s director of football Txiki Begiristain has praised Gundogan’s “work ethic and technical ability”. “He is an intelligent and versatile midfielder who can operate in a number of different roles,” Begiristain added. “He will be a very important player for us in the coming years.”
Gundogan dislocated his kneecap in training at the start of May and was also sidelined for the 2014 World Cup with a back problem that ruled him out for almost the entire 2013-14 season. “The opportunity to work with a coach like Pep Guardiola is something I am really looking forward to and I am flattered to be the first signing the club has made this summer,” he added. “I will give everything to help us win titles both in England and the Champions League. These are exciting times. “I have my best years ahead of me and I think we can achieve great things together.” The midfielder joined Dortmund from Nuremberg in 2011 and helped them reach the 2013 Champions League final, before signing a new contract in 2015 that still had a year to run.

Play without fear, England told Former England striker Michael Owen has told the current squad to play without fear at Euro 2016. Roy Hodgson’s side begin their campaign against Russia on 11 June, before facing Wales and Slovakia. “Forget who’s going to cost us,” Owen, who represented England at five major tournaments, told BBC Sport. “There’s almost a fear of being ‘the one’ - and that then turns into a selfish attitude. You can’t be expressive, you can’t be creative,” Owen said. “There will be one person that everyone’s going to gang up on - the press, the media, whatever - but you’ve got to be bigger than that, not bothered about that and actually just do what’s best for the team,” the 36-yearold added “There’s been a fear over the years because we all see someone missing a penalty or someone getting sent off and costing the team. “The whole country then almost gangs up on that player. “There’s a fear amongst the squad - or there certainly was in my time - whereby you just didn’t want to be that person everybody castigates, gets vilified, and you’re the one that misses a penalty and they make a pizza advert about you.” Gareth Southgate featured in an advert for Pizza Hut after Euro 96 following England’s semi-final exit to eventual tournament winners Germany. The host nation went out after the then Aston Villa defender was the only player to miss a penalty in the shootout after the game at Wembley had finished 1-1 following extra time. At the 1998 World Cup in France, midfielder David
England Captain Wayne Rooney gestures during a past match. The English squad has been urged to drop their fearfactor in France if they are to impress at the Euro.
Beckham was sent off against Argentina for kicking out at Diego Simeone before England exited on penalties at the last-16 stage. Then in 2006 at the World Cup in Germany, striker Wayne Rooney was dismissed for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho as England went out in the quarter-finals, again after a penalty shootout. Everton’s John Stones - one of only three recognised centre-backs in England’s 23-man squad for Euro 2016 - has faced criticism for the way he plays the game, often preferring to dribble his way out of trouble rather than clear the ball. But Owen has strongly defended t h e 22-year-old and said: “This kid could play for Barcelona. “He’s probably the only player in the England squad who could walk into Barcelona’s team at the moment. “He’s absolutely brilliant. Get behind him, believe in him.” Owen said some of the negativity surrounding Stones was because he is “so much better than most other players”. The former Liverpool, Newcastle United, Real Madrid and Manchester United forward added: “People just don’t realise that a lot of it is under control. He will make the odd mistake but so will everyone - everyone just goes on and on and on about mistakes. “Eventually someone might start getting into his head and he might not be the player he should because of this negativity that surrounds our country so often.”

Cameroon’s Erick Chuopo-Moting celebrates after scoring for the Indomitable Lions. They will be seeking to beat Mauritania tomorrow to book their berth in Gabon next year.
Africa’s big guns seek AFCON slots Two more teams can book their places at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Thursday and Friday’s qualifiers. Algeria need a just draw in Seychelles today while Cameroon require a win in Mauritania tomorrow to qualify for Gabon. Tunisia will lose the chance of winning Group A if Djibouti beat them on Friday and Liberia beat Togo on Sunday. The other game on Friday is Libya playing Morocco, who have already qualified for the finals in Gabon. Twenty more matches over the weekend complete the penultimate round of qualifiers. The group winners and the best two runners-up will qualify for the finals. Before the upcoming qualifiers, Benin are the best second-placed side with eight points, while Tunisia, Mauritania, Uganda, Central African Republic all have seven. Since their last Group J qualifiers against Ethiopia in March, Algeria have parted company with French coach Christian Gourcuff. A 7-1 win and 3-3 draw in those matches against Ethiopia leaves the Desert Foxes five points clear at the top of their group and with a better head-to-head record over the Walya Antelopes. He has been replaced with two interim coaches Yazid Mansouri and Nabil Neghiz, who are wary of playing on an artificial pitch in Seychelles. The duo will also be aware that Seychelles are unbeaten at home in the qualifiers so far, after a draw with Ethiopia and win over Lesotho. Algeria will also be without several key players, with Sporting Lisbon’s Islam Slimani suspended while English Premier League champion Riyad Mahrez and Porto’s Yacine Brahimi are both injured. Instead they will look to an attacking trio of Lyon’s Rachid Ghezzal, Sofiane Feghouli of Valencia and El Arabi Soudani, who has
scored four goals in the campaign so far. Belgium’s Footballer of the Year Sofiane Hanni, who plays for Anderlecht, is set to make his debut for Algeria having played for France at youth level. A loss for Seychelles will mean they are unable to win the group and leave them hoping several other results go their way this weekend to have any chance of a best second-placed spot. On Friday, Cameroon could also join Morocco and hosts Gabon at the 2017 Nations Cup if they can win in Mauritania. The Indomitable Lions are currently one point ahead of their opponents after the first four matches of the campaign. Cameroon coach Hugo Broos left captain Stephane Mbia out of his squad for the qualifier and Tuesday’s friendly 3-2 loss to France. Forward Benjamin Moukandjo and Nicolas Nkoulou both missed the France game with injuries too. Tunisia also play on Friday knowing they could lose the chance of winning Group A if they lose in Djibouti and then Liberia secure a win over Togo on Sunday. In that scenario Liberia would earn themselves a place at the Nations Cup finals for the first time since 2002. Djibouti have already been eliminated and have yet to win a single point from their opening four matches, scoring just once and conceding 16 goals. Friday’s other match sees Morocco take on Libya in Tunisia after the game was moved due to the ongoing problems in Libya. Morocco have already secured their place in the finals after a 1-0 win away and a 2-0 victory at home over Cape Verde in March maintained their 100 per cent winning record in the qualifiers. Libya meanwhile realistically need a win to keep alive any hope they have of grabbing second spot in Group F.
