Uhuru: Let’s stick to law on IEBC matter WEEKEND EDITION, JUNE 3-5, 2016
President Uhuru Kenyatta has today vowed to stick to the constitutional provisions as far as the matter of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) are concerned. There has been expectations that the government and the opposition would form a team to negotiate on structured reforms at the electoral body with Cord already nominating its team of five members for the talks. But President Kenyatta has today declared that he has no such intentions and will only support a procedural approach to the matter saying his Jubilee side does not have any problems with the electoral agency. “When I took office, I promised to obey and follow the constitution. That is the legacy that I want to build. We fought so hard for the new constitution. Let us go by its teaching,” President Kenyatta said at the National Prayer Breakfast today. His remarks echoed the sentiments by State House late Wednesday that dismissed as untrue report that the head of State had agreed with the opposition to begin talks on the fate of IEBC. During their Madaraka Day rally at Uhuru Park on Wednesday, Cord chief Raila Odinga and Moses Wetangula told the gathering that they had agreed with President Kenyatta in principal that a ten-member team would be formed to begin structured talks on electoral reforms. “No such agreement was struck, as it would have been inconsistent with the President’s stand,” State House quickly

said in a rejoinder. Yesterday, Mr Odinga gave the government up to Sunday to nominate its members to the team for talks failure to which he threatened to lead his supporters in weekly protests against the poll agency bosses. “We are waiting for five names from
Jubilee. Should they fail to give out the names, I will be leading the Opposition to the streets on Monday as usual,” he said at a rally in Kisumu yesterday. The protest have since attracted concern from the clergy and businesspeople who have all called on both sides to drop their hardline grounds and dialogue.
The clergymen have already met with IEBC commissioners twice to try and convince them on dialogue while also seeking to convince President Kenyatta to agree to talks with the opposition. But the President today seemed to have brushed those efforts aside when he told Kenyans to stop invoking God’s name in the matter as it already has a
way out through the constitution. “People are asking for God to intervene in this IEBC issue, but he has already done his part. He did his part when we got the new constitution. Why are we still on this matter? God has finished the issue,” he said. @peter_x254
President’s remarks quash hopes of dialogue as Cord readies for protests
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s declaration today that he will stick to the law on the current stalemate over the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dashed any hopes of negotiations between the government and the opposition on the fate of the electoral body. Cord has been staging weekly protests in Nairobi and across the country to force out IEBC commissioners, with the demonstrations recently turning bloody following clashes with police. However, this week, Cord suspended the protest to allow for dialogue as was requested by church leaders and businessmen who felt continued protests were hurting the economy. And on Tuesday, all seemed to be going down well after President Kenyatta invited opposition leader Raila Odinga to State House for ‘talks’. But the hopes of any dialogue has been quickly dashed and what remains now
is another round of clashes with the opposition vowing to return to the streets from next week if talks do not commence. On Wednesday, Mr Odinga said they had agreed with Mr Kenyatta to constitute a team of 10 negotiators to find a way out of the IEBC impasse. But State House quickly moved to distance itself from any such agreement saying there were never talks on the fate of the electoral agency. “No such agreement was struck as it would be inconsistent with President Kenyatta’s stand on the subject which is that any discussion on the IEBC must be done within the confines of the law,” a statement from State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu said. And today, President Kenyatta confirmed that position when he led the country at the annual National Prayer Breakfast at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.
Cord leader Raila Odinga when he addressed supporter on Wednesday during a Madaraka Day rally at Uhuru Park in Nairobi. He has announced that they will resume protests next week if the government does not initiate dialogue by Sunday.
“When I took office, I promised to obey and follow the constitution. That is the legacy that I want to build. We fought so hard for the new constitution; let us go by its teaching,” he said in regard to the matter of IEBC. “I will live by the constitution, whether it works in my favour or not,” he added. Those remarks put to an end any hopes that the government will form its team to meet that of the opposition for negotiations. Only yesterday, Cord unveiled its list of those to negotiate with the Jubilee side with the Coalition Management Committee Co-Chairs James Orengo,
Johnstone Muthama and Eseli Simiyu being joined by, Mombasa County Woman Representative Mishi Mboko and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed in spearheading the structured dialogue on electoral reforms. While in Kisumu yesterday, Mr Odinga gave the government after Sunday to form its team, threatening that the opposition will resume its protests if nothing happens until then. “We are waiting for five names from Jubilee. Should they fail to give out the names, I will be leading the Opposition to the streets on Monday as usual,” he said during a prayer rally to mourn
three people who were killed during anti-IEBC protests last week. While President Kenyatta hold that it would be unconstitutional to dialogue on the fate of IEBC, Mr Odinga opines otherwise. “It is not unconstitutional to hold talks out of Parliament. In Serena those who sat for the talks that included Deputy President William Ruto were MPs but still agreed on the formation of the Grand Coalition government in a hotel,” he said referring to the 2008 mediation talks that followed after the disputed presidential poll results.

Lawyers in desperate efforts to resolve case on Judges Rawal and Tunoi retirement appeal Lawyers are separately meeting members of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in a desperate attempt to find an out of court settlement to the retirement case pitying Deputy Chief Justice and the commission. Law Society of Kenya President Isaac Okero was scheduled to today begin the attempts at persuading JSC to ‘give a little to get a little’ from Deputy Chief Justice Kalpana Rawal and suspended Supreme Court judge Philip Tunoi who have fought retirement at 70 all the way from the High Court to the Supreme Court. Attempts at convincing their legal representatives and Secretary Anne Amadi to join the mediation table at which Rawal and Tunoi already sit, failed on first attempt on Thursday leading the Society to seek, “personal engagement,” with all the members of the JSC to resolve what they said were, “one or two sticking points.” The Supreme Court granted the prayer with Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, as Chairman of the JSC, committing to setting up a meeting for Friday afternoon. “We resume on Monday at 2.30 to either receive a settlement or to hear the applications,” he added. But John Khaminwa, acting as a friend of the court on behalf of Kituo cha Sheria, strenuously opposed the meeting saying it effectively demolished the Chinese wall that stood between the judicial and administrative undertakings of the Chief Justice and Supreme Court judge Smokin Wanjala who are both members of the JSC. “That we should have judges sitting, hearing a matter in open court and then the same judges again go and retire and meet some of the parties to negotiate is untidy. I’m inviting your
Supreme Court Judges from left: Njoki Ndung’u, Jackton Ojwang’, Willy Mutunga, Mohamed Ibrahim and Smokin Wanjala during Thursday’s hearings on the appeal by fellow judge Justice Kalpana Rawal and Philip Tunoi at the Supreme Court in Nairobi. lordship very respectfully that you decline the invitation.” He said the stances already taken by JSC’s legal representatives Ahmednasir Abdullahi, Paul Muite and Charles Kanjama revealed the LSK’s efforts at mediation to be a, “a waste of time.” “It is almost impossible to get an agreement when you have my learned friend Ahmednasir, Paul Muite and Kanjama. You have heard the words and the tone in which Ahmednasir has said… he doesn’t want to see Justice Rawal as the Acting Chief Justice.” Khaminwa opposed the idea of resolving the matter out of court right from the onset saying it would only act as a stop gap measure as it didn’t stop any of the 40 other judges
appointed to the bench prior to the promulgation of the Constitution in 2010 from challenging the Court of Appeal finding that they should retire at 70 as stated in the Constitution and not at 74 which was the retirement age when they took up office. Chief Justice Mutunga was however adamant that the meeting between the JSC, with himself as Chair, and the LSK would go forward shutting down any further protests. “We don’t want to be very colonial about this. ‘Just rise up and shut up everybody.’ We don’t want to do that. We’ve given an order. Why is it being opened up?” The lawyers who represent his interests as Chairman of the JSC had however held the
same position as Khaminwa; that no more time be, “wasted,” on what they presented to be a futile attempt to reach an out of court settlement. “The negotiations have completely failed,” Abdullahi reported to the five judge bench comprised of Mutunga and Supreme Court judges Mohammed Ibrahim, Jackton Ojwang, Smokin Wanjala and Njoki Ndungu. “Nothing substantive was put on the table for the respondent to look into. Not a single proposal.” The LSK proposed mediation to resolve the impasse between Tunoi and Rawal on one side and the Judiciary and Judicial Service Commission on the other given doubts that the five Supreme Court judges can hear the retirement
dispute impartially. “This is because of the seven judges of the Supreme Court, two including the Chief Justice are members of the JSC who took the view that the retirement of judges ought to be at 70; two other judges are the subject of the appeal, while the remaining three judges were part of the bench that expressed the opinion that judges ought to serve up to 74 years,” Ombudsman Otiende Amollo explained in an advisory opinion. It is for this reason that an activist, Okiya Omtatah, is seeking to have the bench disqualify itself from hearing the dispute. More on this story at

Kenya machinery exported to China as CS urges more technical courses Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi has challenged students in colleges and universities to take up technical courses as they offer more potential for growth of the country. The CS made the remarks during the flagging off of machinery and spare parts for export to China at the Kabete Technical Training Institute. Matiangi said that innovation was the way to go if Kenya ever wants to join the high table of industrialised and developed countries. “No country has developed where 78 per cent of their students in centres of higher learning take courses in the arts and humanities,” Matiangi said. “Any development lies in science, technology and innovation.” Matiangi expressed concern over the emphasis placed on non-technical courses by the universities and colleges
saying they train students on jobs that do not exist instead of creating the said jobs. “We need to teach our students on how to be visionary and creative instead of wasting time lecturing them on things gone by like Vasco da Gama,” he added. The CS further said that the education sector will witness a paradigm shift in policy with attention now shifting to technical training where skills and manufacturing are of the essence. Matiangi described the flagging off ceremony as a momentous and proud occasion as the materials to be exported were made by students from the Kabete Institute and the Nyeri National Polytechnic. “For the first time ever we are exporting finished products to China and not the other way round. Made in Kenya, exported to China,” the CS
quipped to a round of applause from the audience at the event. Matiangi said his ministry’s focus is now on the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) coalition of programs for students and teachers. The mechanical engineering students from the institutes were the winners of the inaugural Africa Tech Challenge organized by the Ministry of Education and China’s AVIC International Corporation. The winners received a Sh 10 million contract on behalf of their institutes to manufacture spare parts for the Chinese manufacturing company. They also received internships and scholarships in China as part of prizes for their win. @harrison_x254

Global terror attacks reduced in 2015
There was a marked fall in the number of terror attacks around the world in 2015, the US State Department has said. It attributed the 13% drop from 2014 to fewer attacks in Iraq, Pakistan and Nigeria, three of the five countries worst affected by terrorism. The other two are India and Afghanistan and together more than half the 11,000 attacks occurred within their borders. Separately, the UN warned that socalled Islamic State (IS) was focusing on international civilian targets. Over the past six months IS had carried out attacks in 11 countries, not including its activity in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan and Libya, the UN said. More than 28,300 people died - a 14% decline - and about 35,300 others were wounded in 11,774 terrorist attacks worldwide last year, data compiled by the University of Maryland showed. However, attacks and deaths increased in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, the
Philippines, Syria and Turkey, State Department Acting Co-ordinator for Counterterrorism Justin Siberell said. The State Department said figures showed the terror threat “continued to evolve rapidly in 2015, becoming increasingly decentralised and diffuse”. Extremists were exploiting frustration in countries “where avenues for free and peaceful expression of opinion were blocked”, it said. IS was the biggest single threat, the State Department said. The group has attracted affiliates and supporters in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Although IS was losing territory in Iraq and Syria, it had gained in strength in Libya and Egypt, the report said. The report said Iran was the biggest state sponsor of terrorism, saying it supported conflicts in Syria and Iraq, and was also implicated in violent Shia opposition raids in Bahrain. Bahrain has accused Iran of supplying weapons to Shia militants behind bomb attacks on security forces. Iran denies this.

Egypt launches probe into ‘dogs and slaves’ slur
June.
The Arab Republic of Egypt has launched investigations into claims that its Minister of Environment Khaled Mohamed Fahmy Abdel (pictured below) referred to subsaharan Africans as, “dogs and slaves,” during the United Nations Environment Assembly held in Nairobi last week. It has however taken exception to the manner in which the complaint to the Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps was made. Yvonne Khamati, Chair of the African Diplomatic Corps, in a memo to the ADC Dean, communicated the recommendation that Egypt, “not negotiate or take any leadership position on behalf of Africa,” on account of the racist remarks their Minister is alleged to have made. But the Egyptian government has taken issue with the sweeping indictment even as a number in their citizenry took it upon themselves to apologise for the slight using the twitter hashtag #WeAreSorryAfrica. “The Arab Republic of Egypt takes this opportunity to express its total rejection and disappointment with the language used by the Chair of the Technical Committee’s memorandum with regard to defaming
generalisation levied at the country and people of Egypt,” the Embassy of Egypt in Nairobi stated in communication to the Dean of the ADC. The memo authored by Khamati states that the Egyptian Minister for Environment made the tasteless reference to sub-saharan Africans at the conclusion of the UNEA-2 in Nairobi last week. “Divisions evolved when the resolution on Gaza was not adopted due to a lack of quorum because most delegations had left. As a result, a few African delegations consulted with the delegation of Morocco, in their capacity as Chair of the Arab League and Egypt, with the view to the view to dissuade them from nullifying the resolutions that had already been adopted before the issue of quorum was raised.” “During our consultations with Egypt, the head of the Egyptian delegation and current President of AMCEN dismissed our concerns by informing that they would speak in their sovereign capacity and to that extent, referred to sub-Saharan Africa as dogs and slaves, in Arabic.”

‘Rants, attacks and lies’: Clinton goes after Trump
Democratic presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton (pictured below) has unleashed a scathing attack on her Republican challenger Donald Trump in a mocking evisceration as campaigns now shape up. Clinton’s speech that was billed as a major foreign policy address instead unfolded as a savage attack of Donald Trump Thursday as the former secretary of state adopted an aggressive new campaign persona designed to repel the unpredictable challenge posed by the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. In one of the most striking speeches of
her political career, Clinton dispensed with the sober diplo-speak that has characterized her previous national security addresses and went straight for the jugular, unleashing a series of biting attacks on Trump. In the spirit of President Lyndon Johnson’s notorious “Daisy” nuclear blast ad targeting Barry Goldwater’s temperament in 1964, Clinton warned that Trump should not be let anywhere near the nuclear codes because he could start a war when somebody “got under his very thin skin.” “He’s not just unprepared -- he’s temperamentally unfit to hold an
office that requires knowledge, stability and immense responsibility,” Clinton said during the speech in San Diego, California, days before Tuesday’s primary in the Golden State effectively concludes the primary season and confirms her as the presumptive Democratic nominee over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Trump (pictured right) fired back while speaking at a rally in San Jose, California, Thursday night. “I watched Hillary today and it was pathetic. It was so sad to watch,” Trump said, calling it a “political speech” that had nothing to do with foreign policy. “It was a pretty pathetic deal,” he added. The speech marked a significant moment in Clinton’s campaign, as it was the first real signal of the tactics and attitude she will use to take on Trump and offered a preview of what are likely to be fierce clashes between the rivals at a trio of presidential debates later in the year. It demonstrated the kind of sardonic, unrestrained humor that she often shows in private interactions with friends and reporters but has refrained from displaying in public. It also appeared to be aimed at Democrats who are spooked by recent polls showing a tight race between Clinton and Trump, and who fear her often-criticized campaigning skills won’t keep up with Trump’s volatile and highly effective off-the-cuff style. And when she argued that Trump’s lack of knowledge on foreign policy and temperament would put at risk decades of Republican and Democratic foreign policy advances, she appeared to be making a pitch for disgruntled national security conservatives who feel unable to put their trust in the Republican nominee.
WEEKEND EDITION, JUNE 3-5, 2016
Yet the strategy has its risks, as pretty much all of Trump’s GOP primary rivals who tried to take on Trump couldn’t survive his return fire. The question is whether Clinton will be more effective. She might be helped by not waiting until the last minute like the Republicans did -- seeking to define Trump early in the minds of the general election audience. She attempted to convince voters that Trump’s ideas are a mix of “bizarre rants, personal feuds and outright lies.” She lambasted his “bragging” approach to foreign policy based on a string of “nasty tweets” and accused him of harboring a “bizarre” affinity for authoritarian leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Communist rulers of China and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un. “We cannot put the safety of our children and grandchildren in Donald Trump’s hands. We cannot let him roll the dice with America,” Clinton said. At one point, Clinton imagined Trump composing nasty tweets to respond to her speech. And the combative Republican standard-bearer did not
disappoint. “Bad performance by Crooked Hillary Clinton! Reading poorly from the telepromter! She doesn’t even look presidential!” the presumptive GOP nominee wrote as her address ended. In another tweet, Trump added: “Crooked Hillary no longer has credibility - too much failure in office. People will not allow another four years of incompetence!” But taking a page from Trump’s book, Clinton’s speech contained a string of zingers meant to ridicule the presumptive presidential GOP nominee and render him an unacceptable choice for president. “He says he has foreign policy experience because he ran the Miss Universe pageant in Russia,” Clinton said. “The stakes in global statecraft are infinitely higher and more complex than in the world of luxury hotels.” She added: “I will leave it to the psychiatrists to explain his attraction to tyrants” before taking aim at Trump’s claim that being a global business tycoon equips him with significant global knowledge.

Negative yield debts breaks $10tn level for first time: Negative-yielding
government debt has risen above $10tn for the first time, enveloping an increasingly large part of the financial markets after being fuelled by central bank stimulus and a voracious investor appetite for sovereign paper. The amount of sovereign debt trading with a sub-zero yield climbed 5 per cent in May from a month earlier to $10.4tn, buoyed by rising bond prices in Italy, Japan, Germany and France, according to rating agency Fitch. Yields fall as the price of the underlying bonds climbs. The ascent of the negative yield, which first affected only the shortest maturing notes from highly rated sovereigns, has encompassed sevenyear German Bunds and 10-year Japanese bonds www.ft.com

Trust new banking platform to inspire brand loyalty: Bankers The public needs to trust the recentlyintroduced service dubbed ‘Kenya Interbank Transaction Switch’ (KITS) so as to inspire brand loyalty and boost financial inclusion, the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has said. KITS -- an interbank mechanism that will enable interoperability across KBA members for all retail payment channels, including: mobile, ATM, bank branches, bank agents, POS and online – is part of Association’s recently-established subsidiary company named Integrated Payments Services Limited (IPSL). According to the KBA, IPSL is set to bring to market the first of its kind, 24/7 integrated payment platform The Association has since argued that once the general public starts using KITS for their day-to-day money transfer, Kenyans will finally “understand how banks are working towards making their lives easier.” “KITS will provide a sense of inclusion amongst the banking industry,” the Association argued, noting that various regulatory bodies should therefore advocate and encourage the public to use KITS for its “secure system that will expand financial inclusion.” The KBA has stated that promoting the use of the platform will “encourage a sense of ownership, a part and parcel of a one of a kind project that will transform the payment system in Kenya as we know it.” “The mission is to support the transition to a ‘cash-lite’ economy by 2020 driven by the ubiquitous adoption of digital money. For this to be possible, KITS would need to have top-of-mind respect; to be trusted and loved; to be talked about at scale

Ahead of the launch, the KBA noted that IPSL’s core messages will center on Innovation, Value for Customers, Efficiency and Financial Inclusion.
Rotich warns of weakened outlook, uncertainty ahead of Budget Day The Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury Mr Henry Rotich has warned Kenyans that slow global growth, weak economic outlook and increased uncertainty have played a major role in the formulation of the 2016 /2017 budget. Rotich is scheduled to read the budget Statement on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at the National Assembly and has forewarned the public of external shocks that may affect budgetary allocations. “The 2016/17 Budget has been prepared against a backdrop of slower global growth and increased uncertainty,” Rotich said in an earlier statement. The National Treasury CS has stated that global economic recovery had continued to be moderate, although the outlook has weakened further since October 2015 due to increased risks. In April, he had warned that the impact of lower commodity prices on commodity importers was less positive than expected. AS such,
Rotich said that commodity exporters have to adjust their economies in a more difficult environment. “Nonetheless, terms of trade developments have led to a narrowing of global imbalances, even as net creditor and debtor positions continue to expand. Recovery is projected to strengthen in 2017 and beyond, driven primarily by emerging market and developing economies, as conditions in stressed economies start gradually to normalize,” Rotich added. The CS noted that policies to accelerate and sustain economic growth in 2016 and in the medium term will continue to focus on: Improving the business environment, Continued spending in infrastructure to unlock constraints to growth, Sustaining sectoral spending for employment creation, Sustained investment in social services for the welfare of Kenyans, Enhancing service delivery through and Continued structural reforms in the public @Dennis _x254 sector.
“IPSL’s mission in the long run is to continue stretching its reach to more customers (banked and the unbanked) with competitively-priced products while delivering financial services at affordable costs to sections of marginalized and low income segments of society through progressive innovation,” the Association said in its statement. @kevin_x254

Trade scheme moves to curb food wastage as Kenya, EA trade
A recently-introduced trade initiative is seeking to reduce food wastage among East African countries. The drive, dubbed ‘the FoodTrade East and Southern Africa programme’ is funded by the British government in the form of £3 million (Sh463 million) grant. The programme, which was announced in April to enable 70,000 smallholder farmers in Tanzania and Uganda to access regional export markets, has since attracted 10 warehouses and five banks in Kenya, which have so far provided credit against warehouse receipts for up to Sh150 million. Once issued with a warehouse receipt, farmers can use it as collateral to obtain finance. That will prevent them having to sell for a low price after harvest and buy high later. The project will also enable smallholder farmer cooperatives to sell their grain collectively, and build strong links with grain traders, incentivising them to grow a larger amount of better-quality crops. The facility comes at a time when Uganda and Tanzania produce a surplus of staple foods almost every year, whereas Kenya only grows enough to feed itself one year in five, according to lead agency, Farm Africa. Until recently, high tariffs on trade within East Africa meant it was cheaper for Kenya to import crops from outside Africa, but recent policy developments have removed barriers to regional trade, Farm Africa said in a statement. According to Steve Ball, Country Director for Farm Africa Tanzania, the new project’s drive to promote food trade was a step towards agricultural self-sufficiency in the region. .
Kenya’s first running shoe raises over Sh9 million on Kickstarter Kenya is making its first attempt at penetrating the global running shoe market through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. A duo of local entrepreneurs has come up with a product, dubbed ‘Enda’ that prides itself as ‘The First Kenyan Running Shoe’. Their initiative has so far raised $90,643 (Sh9.155 million) far above their $75,000 (Sh7.575 million) goal. “We are creating the first world-class Kenyan running shoes based on the advice, skills, and experiences of great Kenyan athletes. But we can’t do it without the help of the Kickstarter community,” say Enda Athletic founders Navalayo Osembo-Ombati and Weldon Kennedy. “We’re confident that we’ve made a shoe that fits both of those criteria: the Enda Iten, our debut design named after a small nondescript town in Kenya known for producing running champions,” the two said of their product. The duo’s long term goal is for all components of
Enda shoes to be made start to finish in Kenya. Currently, a great deal of the equipment necessary to make the shoes cannot be found in Kenya. Enda Athletic will therefore sourcing the component pieces from Asia, and then building the shoes and packaging them here in Kenya. Kickstarter is the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects. It is an American publicbenefit corporation based in Brooklyn, New York which has built a global crowdfunding platform focused on creativity. The company’s stated mission is to help bring creative projects to life. Kickstarter has reportedly received more than $1.9 billion (Sh192 billion) in pledges from 9.4 million backers to fund 257,000 creative projects, such as films, music, stage shows, comics, journalism, video games, technology and foodrelated projects. @Dennis _x254

Kenyatta, Turkey President sign Sh100 billion trade agreements
Kenya and Turkey have agreed on a target to grow their bilateral trade volume to Sh100 billion over the next five years. The move, according to President Uhuru Kenyatta will not only strengthen but also increase commercial agreements with Turkey. “I have agreed with President Erdogan that the trade volumes between our two countries is unacceptably below our expectations thus why we are committed to see this figure increased to a much higher level,” said the President at a press conference at State House. He says the target would be achieved with ease through adoption of innovative business model such as Buy, Operate and Transfer (BOT) as well as Public Private Sector Partnerships (PPPs). The two Heads of State reiterated that they will incorporate the development of trade agreements that Turkey is seeking to have with the entire East African region. They agreed that they will fast-track the signing of an agreement seeking to cope with the issue of double taxation. Kenyatta urged the Turkish government to heavily invest in Kenya’s renewable energy, infrastructure development, agro-processing, irrigation, ICT, oil and mining sectors, as well as the LAPSET project and Konza Techno City. Accompanied by 135 top business owners from Turkey, President Erdogan said his government is ready to support its business owners in investing more in
Kenya. “The Turkish Exim Bank is ready to provide guarantees and financial support to investors in order to increase trade ties between the two nations,” he said. He noted that Turkey ranked second
after China in the construction industry and 43rd out of 200 top construction companies across the globe. The Turkish President stated that interactions between business owners from both countries will grow the economy for the benefit of citizens from

High Court bars Mombasa county from interfering with Kenya Power operation The High Court has granted a temporary injunction restraining the County Government of Mombasa from interfering with the company’s operations. “The High Court in Mombasa today granted a temporary injunction restraining the County Government of Mombasa from arresting, intimidating, threatening, or interfering with Kenya Power employees or agents engaged in the company’s business operations of distribution, retail, and supply of electric energy and way leaves maintenance,” Kenya Power said in a recently-released notice. On May 30, the company had filed a notice of motion against county government. With the ruling, the company intends to remove all vegetation encroaching the network not only in Mombasa but across the country The county government had forcefully stopped Kenya Power from ‘way leave’
maintenance, especially around Nyali area. The power distributor was carrying out a massive network maintenance by cutting down vegetation which had grown to the extent of interfering with reliability of power supply in the coast region. Way leaves maintenance includes lopping of trees and hedges, clearing bushes, and cutting down trees touching electricity supply lines. According to the power distributor, the County government started clamping Kenya Power vehicles and harassing its staff. On Monday, May 30, Kenya Power filed a notice of motion under Civil Procedures Rules and the Energy Act (2006) against the County government of Mombasa. With the ruling, the utility company intends to remove all the vegetation encroaching the network not only in Mombasa but across the country. @Dennis_x254

Paint manufacturer, Crown Paints has rolled out a new range of eco-friendly paints as part of a strategy to increase its market share through innovation of products that meet the ever increasing demand in the East African region. The products, dubbed Zero VOC paints come at a time when Kenya has joined the global fight against carbon emissions, which are harmful to the environment. VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are solids and liquids found in ordinary paints that convert easily to gas or vapour at room temperature which, when exposed to the environment and humans, can have harmful effects. As a result of recent global research, Zero VOCs paints are being developed
to offer the same high standard of paint without the potentially unsafe chemical components, whilst improving air quality and reducing polluted emissions. “We have been doing intensive research on manufacturing of eco-friendly paints locally and are pleased to announce that we have been successful. The introduction of Zero VOC paints is proof of our commitment to offer the highest quality, innovative products and superior value to our customers in the region. It also reflects our mission to ensure that our products meet and exceed health and safety norms,” noted Rakesh Rao the firm’s chief executive officer. “We have been manufacturing low VOC paint ranges for some time but
after years of research, we are the first company in the region to manufacture and offer Zero VOC paints. Opting for zero VOC paints will help create more environmentally friendly and healthier interior and exterior spaces after paint work,” Rao added These paints have a nonthreatening environmental impact due to their high bio-degradability and are also ideal for people who are particularly sensitive to paint fumes. They have no toxic emissions and are a value addition to the product range with no price increase. They are odourless, making them perfect for schools, hospitals and of course, homes. @kevin_x254
Kampala now joins Nairobi in list of smart transportation hubs following Uber expansion Uber, the world’s fastest growing taxi operator, has officially launched its ride-sharing platform in Kampala. The mobilephone-based taxi service has expanded its African network, following its successful launch in cities across the continent. Uber provides a platform to connect drivers with riders in real time, at the touch of a button, promising an affordable, safe and reliable way to get across the city. “We’re excited to be launching Uber in Kampala, a world-class African city. We are inspired by the city’s rapidly developing infrastructure and spirit of entrepreneurship and look forward to giving people in the city an affordable, easy and flexible choice to move around the city safely and reliably,” says Alon Lits, General Manager for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa. The move comes months after the company’s expansion in Kenya was met with protests from local cab drivers in Nairobi.
Uber’s move to Kampala is part of the company’s ongoing expansion strategy. The World Bank forecasts that the Ugandan economy is growing at a positive and upward trajectory due to the development of Uganda’s infrastructure and intensified investment in the country’s private sector. The World Bank also notes that Uganda is one of the world’s youngest populations, with 700,000 new people entering the workforce each year. “At Uber, we are proud to connect millions of global citizens to affordable and reliable rides. By offering a friendly and reliable complement to existing transport options, we can help improve urban mobility in Kampala,” added Lits. He reiterated that Uber is mindful of the city’s current traffic congestion, and they aim to be part of the solution by finding ways to improve the situation. @Lenah _x254

Boost for Stars as Olunga links up with team
arambee Stars has been handed a big boost after star striker Michael Olunga linked up with the team in preparation for Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo in Nairobi. The 22-year old who jetted into the country from his Swedish base on Tuesday night, trained with the team yesterday at the Utalii grounds. Olunga missed the national team’s last two friendly matches against Tanzania and Sudan in Nairobi on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively owing to club duty with his Swedish side Djuargarden IF. Kenya generally lacked the finishing power in the friendlies and coach Stanley Okumbi acknowledges that Olunga’s presence will boost the team. “Although we have generally improved out performance, we need to work on finishing. Olunga will come in handy,” Okumbi said. Okumbi has already trimmed his squad to 25 with Gor Mahia wonder kid Erick ‘Marcelo’ Ouma drafted into the provisional Stars squad ahead of the Congo tie. Also finding a spot in the squad is Spanish based defensive midfielder Ismail Athuman Gonzalez as well as Chemelil Sugar duo of Joseph Okumu and Jaffery Awiti. However, Gonzalez picked what seemed to be a hamstring strain in Thursday’s session after being pulled out of the training early as a precautionary measure. Okumbi heaped praises on the Las Palmas midfielder after his 45-minute performance against Sudan and said he has a huge part to play for the national team adding he is the future within the Stars midfield and defense. The coach is expected to trim the squad further to the 18 who will be on the match sheet for the weekend assignment after their final session tomorrow morning. Among those who have been dropped from the squad include Kenyan Premier League top scorer Wycliffe Ochomo, who played a combined 77 minutes in Stars friendly matches against Tanzania and Sudan, but was never fortunate to get his name on the scoresheet. Others who were left out include Posta Rangers midfielder Joseph Mbugua, his team mate keeper Ian Otieno, Kariobangi Sharks’ Ovella Ochieng and KCB’s Tyrus Omondi.
The squad has been holding two sessions a day in a bid to bolster fitness and chemistry ahead of the Congo duel with Okumbi still searching for his maiden win as Harambee Stars coach. Stiff competition is expected especially on the left side of defense with youngster Ouma having raised a huge case for him to start in his performance against Sudan. Okumbi’s search for a maiden win on Sunday will be given more pressure by the latest news from Fifa that Kenya has dropped 13 places in the rankings released Thursday, sitting at position 129 in the world. The drop has been necessitated by dismal performances in the last matches where Harambee Stars has lost twice and drawn one in the last three FIFA recognized matches. Cumulatively, Kenya has dropped 30 places since February when the team was ranked 99th in the world. Kenya lost back-to-back to lowly ranked Guinea Bissau in African Cup of Nations qualifiers before being held by Tanzania at home in a friendly match. Meanwhile, Congo arrived into the country early yesterday morning and are expected to have a feel of Kasarani, Sunday’s match venue later today. At the same time, Group D leaders Bukina Faso will have a two day stop-over in the country as they prepare to travel to Comoros where they will face the hosts in Moroni in another AFCON qualifier. The Burkinabes lead Group D, ahead of fellow East Africans Uganda who will be playing away to Botswana in another qualifier. Burkina Faso and Uganda are both on seven points but the former are on top due to head to head record.
Kenya’s number one striker Michael Olunga trains at Utalii grounds with Harambee Stars yesterday. INSET: Coach Stanley Okumbi who is upbeat the availability of the former Gor Mahia goal poacher will boost the team’s attacking power.

Conte plays down Italy Euro potentials WEEKEND EDITION, JUNE 3-5, 2016
Italy coach Antonio Conte has played down expectations of a successful Euro 2016 for the Azzurri, saying unity will have to compensate for a lack of talent. The Italians reached the final of the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine, losing to Spain. However, they went out of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil at the group stage. “It isn’t a good moment for our football,” said Conte, who takes charge of Chelsea after the tournament. “It’s important that the squad has a good spirit. I work a lot at this. If we are able to find this way, it’s possible to be an outsider.” So sparse is Italy’s young talent, that Conte has picked the fourth-oldest squad of the tournament, with just seven out of the 23 players aged 25 or younger. Conte, who is taking charge of his first major tournament as Italy boss, said the loss of Paris StGermain midfielder Marco Verratti to injury was a particularly big blow for the team. “He’s the best young player in the national team and a player with great international experience with Paris St-Germain,” Conte told the BBC’s World Football programme in his first interview in English. “The other young players are very, very good, but without international experience.
“It’s very, very difficult to find strong young players. For this reason, we are working hard to become a good squad.” Conte, who won three successive Italian titles with Juventus before taking over the national team in 2014, said that unity includes the Italian fans and has urged them to stand by the Azzurri. “Stay close to the national team. It’s important for the players to feel your trust in them,” he said. “We know this is a moment that is difficult for us, but together we can overcome these difficulties.” Another notable absentee from Conte’s squad is 37-year-old midfielder Andrea Pirlo. The 2006 World Cup-winner moved to New York City FC in July 2015, a decision which is thought to have counted against him in Conte’s eyes. “Andrea Pirlo is a great player,” he said. “I had him for three years in Juventus and we won a lot with him. I’m very affectionate to him. “But I know that in this moment, I have to find the right choice for Italy and not for my heart. “I’m not happy that Andrea isn’t here, but this is life and we must continue.” After Italy’s World Cup exit two years ago, many fans and pundits accused the team of losing its identity. Conte, though, is hopeful that he has brought that back. “It’s very important to have an identity and when the other countries see our team, I want them to

recognise our identity,” he said. “I like to play offensive football and attractive football with great intensity. I like the players to transfer great emotion to our fans. “I always think of the verb, win. Most people use this verb in a very simple way, but to win is very,
very difficult. It’s not for all. “It’s a tough road and along this road there are sacrifices and hard work. “I’m a perfectionist in training, and in life, and I want the best for me and for the people who work with me.”
SPORT 15 WEEKEND EDITION, JUNE 3-5, 2016
England wrap up Euro preps with win England concluded their preparations for Euro 2016 with a narrow win over 10-man Portugal in a disappointing friendly at Wembley. Chris Smalling headed England’s winner from substitute Raheem Sterling’s cross with four minutes left as manager Roy Hodgson’s side struggled to break down Portugal, who had Bruno Alves sent off for a wild, high challenge on Harry Kane in the 35th minute. Only Kyle Walker distinguished himself although Sterling provided a lively cameo off the bench. The main positive for Hodgson was that there were no fresh injury concerns as he now turns his attention to the Euro 2016 opener against Russia in Marseille on 11 June. England’s team sheet looked packed with positive attacking intent - but once they lined up the system looked ill-suited to the team Hodgson had selected. The biggest victim was Tottenham’s Dele Alli, who looked so outstanding playing in an advanced central role in the 3-2 win against Germany in March, but was out of sorts and shunted to the margins by England’s formation. Alli was restricted to the left to allow
Wayne Rooney to play through the middle, while Jamie Vardy and Kane, with 49 Premier League goals between them this season, barely got within sight of each other all night. Vardy and Kane were seemingly handed the responsibility of providing width but instead they were stretched so far apart as to be rendered completely ineffective. The pair have all the makings of a potent partnership but not when they are virtual strangers. It is something Hodgson must work on before England face Russia. Rooney was as industrious as ever but the muddled manner in which this formation performed will again raise questions about his role in England’s team. Rooney, 30, brings much to the side but is he really a better bet in the number 10 role than Alli? That is currently debatable, which leaves him fighting for his place as a striker, although once again the way England set up appeared to confuse the players as much as inspire them. The Manchester United and England captain can still win games but will Hodgson be brave enough to leave him out when the situation demands

it? Sterling had a difficult first season at Manchester City after his £49m summer move from Liverpool but there are one or two signs his
confidence may be returning. He was lively in the win against Australia and set up Rooney’s second goal, and here he delivered a perfect cross for Smalling to head England’s
late decider. If Sterling’s confidence-rebuilding process can continue over the next few weeks, then England could find a potent weapon restored at Euro 2016.
