Sources told XNews that Kinisu was challenged o provide documents of the transactions between his company and the National Youth Service. This comes Nandi Hills Mp called on Kinisu to resign citing conflict of interests. Addressing the press today at Parliament buildings, Keter said Kinisu cannot continue to hold office while he is still being investigated over the business his company conducted with the National Youth Service(NYS) “The EACC boss should resign, we cannot have an individual who is presiding over corruption cases yet he has questions that he has not answered involving his company,” Keter said. Last week Kinisu said he will not quit over the issue saying the tender was a clean business between his company and the government. The EACC boss said everything was done above board and according to the law and therefore neither his wife nor himself should be punished for doing business with the government. “Is it wrong for any Kenyan to do business with government? My wife has worked hard for these contracts and it bad to demonise her for it,” he said at a press conference last Tuesday. “I will not resign as there is no conflict of interests, let the investigations by the agencies go on. I now understand why the previous office holders were hounded out of office, there are some powerful cartels who are not happy with the ongoing investigations,” Kinisu said The EACC boss owns Esaki Limited together with his wife and daughter Caroline Neto. Additional weighbridges to be introduced in hotspots to curb rising road carnage The National Transport and Safety Authority has said it will map all black spots in the country and introduces additional weighbridges in a bid to curb the rising road carnage in the country. NTSA chairperson Lee Kinyanjui (pictured) that they have mapped out all black spots and proposed additional weigh bridges to be able to regulate the load on the commercial vehicles. Kinyanjui who was accompanied by NTSA Director General Francis Meja said that they have proposed to the parent ministry of transport to allocate designate parking places for long vehicles among other measures. Kinyanjui was speaking this
morning in a meeting with parliamentary Transport committee chaired by Starehe MP Maina Kamanda; where they presented a draft commercial service vehicle regulations that is geared to tame road carnage. “Radical changes need to happen but not limited to retesting drivers and advocating behaviour change among drivers,” Maina said. The authority cited over speeding, driver fatigue, unlicensed drivers, stalled vehicles and lack of clear visibility on roads has been cited as some of the major contributors of road carnage. The National transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) said that the long commercial
vehicles have also played a role to the increased rate of fatalities on our roads. NTSA chairperson Lee Kinyanjui noted while the authority has tried to bring down the number of accidents, the non-regulation of the long vehicles has been challenge. “These vehicles were not initially captured in our regulations, to the extent when we carry a crackdown on rogue matatus , they asked why we ignored cracking the whip on commercial vehicles, “ Kinjanyui stated. “Kenyans are asking where did the Michuki rules go; we would want to know because there seems to be laxity in enforcing the law,” Maina asked. @hillary_x254
Kenya airways staff arrested in Mumbai India over gold smuggling From Page 1 The suspect identified as Teddy Mutuma Muthee, 25, was a flight steward on the Nairobi-Mumbai Kenyan flight that landed on Saturday afternoon. The ANC team waited for nearly two hours before Muthee stepped out of the hotel and got into a waiting cab. The cops intercepted the cab and asked him to step out. “Muthee was carrying a laundry bag provided by the hotel and had kept something
wrapped in a newspaper inside. We frisked him but found nothing,” said a senior ANC officer who was part of the team. The officer then asked Muthee to hand over the laundry bag, but he refused to do so. When told that they were cops and if he didn’t cooperate they would haul him to the police station, he handed over the bag. “When we opened the rectangular packet, we were shocked to find gold
bars wrapped in paper. When he couldn’t provide papers or satisfactory answers for possessing the gold bars, we arrested him,” said DCP Jayant Naiknavare. The gold bars weighed 7.5 kilograms and is worth Rs 2.25 crore(Sh34million), the police officer said. “Muthee might have smuggled the gold in the Kenyan flight that he had come in. We have handed him over to the Customs for further investigation,” the DCP said. During questioning, Muthee revealed
that he was on his way to deliver the consignment to a dealer in Colaba. When contacted one of the top managers at KQ said they are not allowed to speak about the matter as it is now a police case “The case is now with the police and not Kenyan Airways.Maybe Kenyan Embassy can you more information,” he told XNews before hanging up.

Traffic offenders to becaned in public
Traffic offenders risk being caned in public if a raft of proposals by a senator in the traffic act will be adopted by the senate. Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong’are wants more punitive punishments to be administered to traffic offenders as a measure to curb the rising cases of road carnage in the country. In his proposals that he said he will table in the senate after recess, Mong’are said the current punishment being administered by the National Traffic and Safety Authority are so lenient and do not discourage offenders from committing the offence. “Traffic offenders should be caned in the back and the palms of their feet in public, no matter the position. When people think of humiliation of public cane they will not commit these offence and we will have sanity in our roads,” Mongare said. Currently,NTSA regulations indicate that when found driving without identification one is fines Sh10,000,failure to stop when required by police officer Sh5,000,driving without a valid license endorsement is respect of class of the vehicle sh7,000,failure to carry reflective warning sign sh2,000,failure to wear seat belt while motor vehicle is in motion sh500 while driving Public Service Vehicle(PSV) while unqualified attracts a penalty of Sh7,000 “The foregoing penalties is a joke and a kind of ‘incentive’ to a killer drivers and due to the inadequacies in the current traffic act chapter 403,I am preparing an amendment to the traffic act to bring on board tough measures that will be commensurate to the offences committed,” Mong’are said “The National Authority and Safety Authority has failed in its mandate that’s why we are witnessing an increase of accidents in our roads, it’s time we put in place more punitive measures so as to restore sanity in our roads,” Mong’are said at a press conference in parliament buildings. The Senator in his proposals wants mandatory review of drivers’ fitness ability once in every four years by a competent authority. He is also proposing that permanent and total ban of a driver who has caused death by negligent driving. @sam_x254

Ombudsman wants foreigner head IEBC The Commission on Administrative of Justice (CAJ) wants at least three foreigners to be commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The commission’s chairman Otiende Amolo said the inclusion of foreigners will help solve the ethnic balance question as they will not present any interest of a particular candidate or region. In his presentation to the parliamentary joint select committee on electoral reforms, Amolo also proposed that one of the foreigners should be chosen as the chairman of the electoral commission. “Having a non-Kenyan as the chairman of the electoral commission will help solve the crisis that we usually face every time during electioneering period. The three non-Kenyans will not present any interest of the political establishment and therefore the country is assured of a free and fair elections,” Amolo said. Amolo said the constition under article 74 allows foreigners to be appointed as chairpersons of constitutional

commissions and therefore his proposals is within the law. “The inclusion of non-Kenyans in IEBC does not violate the constitution. The Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board and the defunct Committee of Experts that drafted the constitution are examples of institutions, where we infused non-Kenyans in their membership for public confidence and objectivity,” Amollo said. The chairman was very categorical that the current commissioners should
vacate office as they have lost public confidence. While acknowledging that the commissioners enjoy security of tenure in office, Amolo said public confidence outweighs everything and that public officers only serve at the interest of the public. “The constitution requires public officers to hold office as long as there is public confidence once that is lost then they ought to resign no matter any other thing,” Amolo said. Amolo also differed with the Attorney
General on his proposal to postpone the election date saying such a move is dangerous. “It is possible to have new commissioners in place and hold elections within the same year as it had been planned, it will be dangerous for as a country to postpone the elections,” Amolo said. The Ombudsman also wants only staff of the electoral commission that are adversely mentioned in official reports to be vetted and appropriate action taken should they be found culpable.
Stop reactionary measures on school unrests, Matiang’i tells unions Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has called on the country to have a long term solution to the current school unrests being witnessed in different parts of the country. Matiang’i has said some of the proposals being fronted by unions such as early closure of schools are only reactionary and do not address the root cause of the problem. The CS ruled out closing schools early and instead proposed that there should a collaborative measure between the County directors of education and county commissioners to arrest the situation. “Where our county directors and county commissioners have worked closely issues have been detected, understood and resolved before they blow out of proportion,” Matiang’i said yesterday during an interview with Citizen TV. Only yesterday, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) demanded the ministry of Education to close down schools to give time for students to relief themselves. The giant teacher’s union also demanded for the immediate release of all school heads and teachers being held over claims of arson exonerating them from any foul play in the incidences that have hit various institutions. Matiang’i dismissed such orders saying that heads of schools involved in the incidences must face the full wrath of the law. “If you have been involved in a criminal activity you must face the law else we will
be entertaining criminal acts in the name of human rights being championed by unions and activists,” added the CS. The remarks comes amid concerns from various stakeholders whether corporal punishments should be re-introduced in school all not. Senate Speaker Ethuro has said lifting the ban on caning would enable teachers to deal effectively with indiscipline students. “We love our children. We want them to be educated and have a bright future. They must be disciplined. As a former human rights activist, I think it is time we re-introduced caning to instill some discipline,” Ethuro said. Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia supported the idea saying, “When we were in school, we were beaten and we were disciplined. What is happening now is worrying and we need to act fast to stem the tide.” Parliamentary Education Committee chairperson, Sabina Chege, said the committee was exploring ways of re-introducing corporal punishment in schools to curb runaway indiscipline among students. The CS attributed the ongoing schools unrest to a low threshold of accountability and responsibility among the school management and board of governors. @wilson_x254

“In our opinion as a commission, only staff of the commission adversely mentioned in official reports should be vetted and others allowed to continue with their work,” Amolo said. Machakos Senator Johnston Muthama and his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen however challenged the Ombudsman to justify why the country should go for a foreigner while there are over 40 million Kenyans. “Why bring foreigners here and we have over 40 million Kenyans? Asked Muthama “What justification will we give to Kenyans that in a country of about 40 million we can’t get nine commissioners with integrity to sit in our electoral commission? Murkomen asked. “The problem is not that we don’t have qualified and competent Kenyans to manage the IEBC, but ethnicity, regionalism and sectionalism are the major problems,” Amollo said. @sam_x254

Kabul IS blast: Afghan capital buries victims of huge bombing funerals have taken place At least 80 people are feared dead in Kabul in Saturday’s suicide bomb attack claimed by so-called Islamic State (IS). Bodies were still being collected from morgues as the first burials were conducted in the west of the city. The bomber targeted a protest march by members of the Hazara minority, Shia Muslims reviled by IS, a Sunni group. President Ashraf Ghani has led prayers for the dead and Afghanistan is observing a day of national mourning. Some families were still searching for missing relatives by yesterday evening. They gathered outside hospitals to read the names posted on the walls, and checking morgues. One family told the BBC they had four people still unaccounted for. On a hilltop, a digger was used to prepare for further interments. The government banned all public gatherings and demonstrations for 10 days after Saturday’s attack, which also wounded at least 230 people. Thousands of Hazaras had been protesting in in Deh Mazang Square over a new power line, saying its route bypassed provinces in central Afghanistan where many of them live. An Afghan intelligence source told the BBC that an IS commander named
Abo Ali had sent three bombers from Nangarhar province to carry out the attack. It appears that only one attacker managed to detonate his explosives. The belt of the second failed to explode and the third attacker was killed by security forces, the source said. Speaking at a hospital, one protester, Sabira Jan, described what had happened: “We were holding a peaceful demonstration when I heard a bang and then everyone was escaping and yelling. “I saw many people were killed and most of them were covered with blood. There was nobody to help the victims. Policemen were looking at us, and after that I heard gunshots, then I don’t know what happened.” President Ghani vowed to take revenge against those responsible for the attack, which was also condemned by the Taliban, Afghanistan’s most prominent Islamist militant group, who accused IS of seeking to start a civil war. The UN mission in Afghanistan described the attack as a “war crime”. The Hazaras, who live mainly in the centre of the country, have long complained of discrimination. During Taliban rule in the late 1990s, many of them fled to Pakistan, Iran
and Tajikistan. Some Hazaras were furious at both the government and their own political leaders who, they said, had exploited the grievances of their community at longstanding discrimination to shore
up their own power bases. “They sold us and we will never forget this,” mourner Ghulam Abbas told Reuters. “They’ve built skyscrapers for themselves and their families from our blood.”
Mourners broke down as they sifted victims’ belongings on Sunday.

World Bank commends Kenya for promoting economic growth
The World Bank has commended Kenya’s government for its efforts in addressing infrastructure constraints, promoting economic growth and reducing inequality among its people. This is according to a recent report from the global lender, which has revealed that as of 2015, 2.6 million individuals were benefiting from cash transfer support through the National Safety Net Program, up from 1.7 million in 2013 The analysis, dubbed ‘Infrastructure for Economic Growth and Shared Prosperity in Kenya’, has shown that by December 2015, 1.3 million people had access to improved water sources while 200,000 others were connected to a sewage network. “Kenya has performed well in the past decade in terms economic growth, mainly driven by the services sector, both traditional and modern. Expansion in services such as financial intermediation and mobile communications has stimulated demand for other services such as trade,” states the report. It indicates that maximizing the potential of services can continue to spur economic growth, especially given that most formal, high quality jobs are in this sector. Agriculture, which still contributes to more than quarter of the economy (and employs most of the rural poor) and manufacturing have stagnated. Due to the stagnation, agriculture and
manufacturing have not been able to create enough jobs for Kenya’s growing working population. Most of the jobs are created by the informal economy and are concentrated in the low productivity segments of hospitality, trade, etc. Improving the ease of doing business is one way toward job creation and higher productivity in the manufacturing sector. World Bank research stipulates, however, that there is still a need for creating job opportunities for the rural poor for poverty reduction and achieving shared prosperity. The Group’s data

Kenya to host conference to deepen bilateral ties with Japan
Kenya is set to host another International conference on Africa’s Development next month, Sate House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu has said. Speaking at State House Nairobi yesterday, Esipisu said that more than 20 African leaders are expected to attend this year’s Tokyo International Conference on Africa’s Development to be held in Nairobi. Esipisu said that the August 2728 summit will provide African and Japanese governments with an opportunity to renew and strengthen existing partnerships between the countries. This comes after a six day United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) that closed its doors on Friday with successful outcomes. The conference brought together over 7,000 delegates from across the world. The Spokesman added that the summit will have three main themes that include promoting structural economic transformation through economic diversification and industrialization, promotion of resilient health systems for quality of life and promotion of social stability. “It is clear to us that industrialization and innovation are key drivers of prosperity, right across the world. It is equally clear that these are two areas in which Japan has experience and expertise to share,” said Esipisu. @lenah_x254
Government makes headway as 200,000 Kenyans gain access to paved roads Kenya’s government has made headway in terms of infrastructure development as more than 200,000 Kenyans have over the past few years, gained access to paved roads, drainage systems, high mast flood lights, and improved water and sanitation services. Through International Development Association (IDA) support, 1.3 million people have been provided with access to improved water sources. This includes 100,000 people in informal settlements, and over 212,000 people connected to the sewage network. As many as 62,650 women have access to improved water sources in areas supported by Bank operations A new report from the World Bank Group (WBG) has revealed that the state’s rehabilitation of 400 km of road under the Northern Corridor Transport Improvement Project has already reduced transit time from
Mombasa to Nairobi by 30 per cent. “Independent roads entities have been created while aviation subsector institutions now have financial autonomy and strengthened oversight aviation security and safety. These efforts have helped ease cost of doing business, improved business climate, and strengthened regional integration in East Africa Community,” states the Group’s analysis on Kenya’s infrastructure, which was revealed barely 3 days ago. Work on Mombasa’s drainage systems has protected 200,000 residents from periodic flooding and an estimated 900,000 urban residents currently benefiting from improved infrastructure. According to the analysis, 29.6km of drainage has been completed, 16.9km of roads rehabilitated, 105.8km of foot and cycle paths built and 544 street and high mast security lights have been
installed. The IDA has also supported the transformation of the roads subsector in Kenya through implementation major institutional and policy reforms – roads policy, established size of road network and its reclassification. IDA support has also resulted in the construction of new terminal (Terminal 1-A) at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with capacity of 2.5 million passengers annually doubled the capacity for existing facilities. Through this partnership, Kisumu airport was expanded into an international airport – extended the runway by 300m and construction of new terminal building with annual design capacity to handle 500,000 passengers. The airport is currently handling 450,000 passengers and plans are underway for further expansion. @Dennis_x254

The realtor has said that there is need to increase funding and capacity building for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises whether informal or formal, as this serves the bank’s strategy of targeting new market segments. ‘’Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. They provide employment, financial empowerment and enable our people to unlock their talents. We’re willing to believe and invest in them. The main criteria is these businesses must be legal,’’ said Sam Waweru, HFC Managing Director. HFC’s approach has seen it develop a unique value proposition to support small businesses, with transactional products; savings and investment solutions and lending products. The products created tailored for SMEs include Liability products with-Micro Biz account, Kundi Bora account, and Asset products such as-Micro Credit Standard Loan, Micro Credit Premium loan and Micro Credit group loan. Waweru has reiterated that lending to small businesses ensures that HF has the ability to mobilize cheap deposits that

ensure the banking services provider has adequate resources to meet the huge demand presented by the micro finance market and other segments. The current business environment has been challenging for MSMEs, denying them access to credit facilities. Mr Waweru however notes this is the right time for small businesses to flourish. A crucial element of HFC’s support of MSMEs will be to provide financial
and management advice and training to MSME owners. “Of course there are challenges but MSMEs are being recognized and supported by the government through single licensing, construction of Jua Kali sheds in most towns, and the introduction of various funds,” Waweru said. “By simply visiting the business and understanding the customer business
concept we are able to partner in financing from as little as Sh10,000 to as high as Sh2 million before graduating the customer to SME for higher funding. We will also have various customer trainings in various towns to help them market their businesses and earn higher returns,” added Mr. Waweru. HFC launched mobile banking tailored for small businesses, and is soon to launch its internet banking solution.
“Our investment in technology will reduce the challenges faced by customers and help them run more efficient businesses,” Waweru said. The HF Group began operations in 1966 with the main objective of implementing the government’s policy of promoting thrift and home ownership. This was to be achieved by providing savings and mortgage facilities to the Kenyan public. @kevin_x254

Healthymagination unveils teams addres maternal & child health in sub-saharan A MONDAY, JULY 25, 2016
Healthymagination Programme welcomes first group of Social Entrepreneurs addressing maternal & child health in Sub-Saharan Africa The Healthymagination Mother and Child Programme, an initiative launched in March 2016 by GE and Santa Clara University’s Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, has selected its first group of social enterprises that will receive training and mentoring. After a rigorous evaluation process, 17 social entrepreneurs from Kenya, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia were selected to be in the programme’s first cohort and recently attended a three-day, in-person workshop in Nairobi, Kenya. This kick-off event is facilitated by seniorlevel Miller Center mentors and GE business leaders. It is designed to help the social entrepreneurs acquire business fundamentals, improve their strategic thought processes, and articulate a business plan that demonstrates impact, growth and long-term financial sustainability. “Social innovations and entrepreneurs in the health sector have in recent years yielded sustainable solutions to some of the world’s biggest health challenges,”
said Jay Ireland, GE Africa President and CEO. “It is for this reason that the Healthymagination Mother and Child programme is focusing on training and mentoring social entrepreneurs working on increasing the quality, access and affordability of maternal and child health in sub-Saharan Africa, thereby enabling more women and children to experience better health,” Ireland added. “Despite major gains made globally in maternal and child mortality, the levels in sub-Saharan Africa remain unacceptably high. This GE and Miller Center collaboration takes an innovative and highly practical approach to combatting this challenge, by providing African social entrepreneurs with the skills and resources they need to expand the positive impact of their interventions,” Thane Kreiner, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship said. “We are excited to work with our first cohort of social entrepreneurs to improve mother and child care in Sub-Saharan Africa. This program builds on GE’s strong track record in bringing innovation to emerging markets while increasing positive health outcomes,” said Robert Wells, Executive Director of Strategy for GE’s Healthymagination commitment.
A group photograph of the 17 finalists and GE executive mentors. The initial workshop will be followed by a six-month, online accelerator programme, where mentorship will be provided by high-profile Silicon Valleybased executives who have themselves undergone mentorship training by Miller Center. This accelerator and mentorship programme will culminate in a “Premier Pitch” event in Africa where the 17 participants will present their respective enterprises to an audience of potential
investors. The training and mentoring drive utilizes Miller Center’s Global Social Benefit Institute (GSBI) methodology, which has been proven and refined through 12 years of working with more than 570 social enterprises worldwide. Participants will also be introduced to GE’s portfolio of products; hence they will gain specialized support and training on technologies and resources for the maternal and child
health sector. Two million new consumers connected to natio The cost of providing electricity to consumers has fallen by 30 per cent just as the national government has managed to connect 2 million consumers to the country’s national grid. Through International Development Association (IDA) and World Bank Group (WBG) support, 280 megawatts (MW) of new geothermal capacity has been commissioned, almost doubling Kenya’s developed geothermal capacity to 579MW from 241MW in 2013. Since then, over 2 million new customers had been connected to electricity supply
by June 2015 compared to a target of 285,000. Since commissioning, two of Kenya’s power plants have generated 2,316 gigawatt-hours (GWh) displacing units that would have been generated from thermal plants. “This has led to significant savings in fuel costs, and a consequent reduction in electricity price paid by consumers,” states a new analysis from the Group. Kenya’s geothermal energy generation capacity has been increased to 2,234MW against a pick demand of 1,549 MW, and the cost of power to consumers fell by 30
per cent since August 2014. With WBG support, there is now 400 MW of geothermal energy production on stream in Olkaria, and new power i already reaching millions of homes and the price of electricity has fallen by 30 pe cent over the past year. “Kenya leads the way in having more than half of all its energy from climate-friendly sources. More than 150,000 households in the informal settlements were connected to legal power in just one year (2015) up from 5,000 households in 2014,” WBG said in its July report.

Nintendo Co. shares plunged by the most since 1990 after the company said late Friday that the financial impact from the worldwide hit game ‘Pokemon Go’ will be limited. The stock sank 18 per cent to 23,220 yen (Sh22,200) at the close in Tokyo, the maximum one-day move allowed by the exchange, wiping out 708 billion yen (Sh677 billion) in market value, Bloomberg reports. After debuting in the U.S. earlier this month, Pokemon Go launched in Japan on Friday and became available in Hong Kong on Monday. The correction comes after Pokemon Go’s release almost doubled Nintendo’s stock through Friday’s close, adding $17.6 billion (Sh1.79 billion) in market capitalization. Nintendo is a shareholder in the game’s developer Niantic Inc. and Pokemon Co., but has an “effective economic stake” of just 13 per cent in the app, according to an estimate by financial services group Macquarie Securities analyst David Gibson. “It’s still possible to say that in the short-term it’s overheated,” said Tomoaki Kawasaki, an analyst at investment group Iwai Cosmo Securities Co. In a press release after the market closed on Friday in Japan, the Kyotobased company said the game’s financial impact will be “limited”. “The content of the announcement itself is not that shocking, but it is a surprise they said it on Friday instead of when they report earnings” later this week, said Nobuyuki Fujimoto, a senior market analyst at SBI Securities Co. “The game has been published in Japan, so for the time being we’ve exhausted all the catalysts.” The company will report first-quarter earnings on Wednesday after the market close, a period which ended before the release of Pokemon Go.
Agricultural Bank of China Ltd. is planning to offload bad loans by packaging them up as asset-backed securities. The move has been touted as China’s largest sale so far under a trial program for lenders. The lender plans to sell securities backed by 10.7 billion yuan (Sh163 billion) of nonperforming loans on the interbank bond market, it said July 22 on the Chinese bond clearing house website. The sale price will be the equivalent of 29 per cent of the loans’ face value, with the recovery rate on the debt forecast at 41 per cent, the lender’s statement showed, Bloomberg reports. As corporate leverage soars and economic growth cools, China’s banks face a rising tide of bad loans. Dorris Chen, a credit analyst at Pacific Investment Management Co., said last week that the country’s Ministry of Finance will eventually have to inject capital into the banking system,
without saying when. Policy Toolkit The nation’s efforts to get to grips with its credit woes include debt swaps for local governments, proposals for banks to swap loans for equity stakes in companies, and the trial of the NPLbacked securities. The China Banking Regulatory Commission said on July 15 that the NPL securities program -- so far used by lenders including Bank of China Ltd. and China Merchants Bank Co. -- will be expanded. Pimco’s Chen was skeptical that largescale sales of the securities will take place, citing investors’ likely perceptions of the risks. In the sales so far, banks have been the biggest buyers -- raising questions about how effective the deals are in cutting risks within the financial sector. Agricultural Bank’s securities will include a 2.06 billion yuan (Sh31 billion) senior tranche and a 1 billion yuan (Sh1 billion) subordinated tranche, the Beijing-based lender said. Agricultural Bank of China (ABC)
Limited also known as AgBank or Nóngháng, is one of the “Big Four” banks in the People’s Republic of China. It was founded in 1951, and has its headquarters in Dongcheng District, Beijing. It has branches throughout mainland China, Hong Kong, London, Tokyo, New York, Frankfurt, Sydney, Seoul, and Singapore. The lender has 320 million retail customers, 2.7 million corporate clients, and nearly 24,000 branches. It is China’s third largest lender by assets. ABC went public in mid-2010, fetching the world’s biggest ever initial public offering (IPO) at the time. The feat has since beenovertaken by another Chinese company, Alibaba. As of 2011, the lender ranks 8th among the Top 1,000 World Banks. In 2015, the bank was ranked 3rd in Forbes’ 13th annual Global 2000 ranking of the biggest, most powerful and most valuable companies in the world. @Dennis_x254

Brexit chaos may erase sh163 trillion from global mergers and acquisitions, says new report Britain’s exit from the European Union (commonly referred to as ‘Brexit’) could wipe as much as $1.6 trillion (Sh1.6 trillion) from future mergers and acquisitions, a new study says. The absence of a clear Brexit road map could lead to a cycle of political and market uncertainty and hit nearterm investment plans and business confidence. This is according to a report dubbed the ‘Baker & McKenzie’s Global Transactions Forecast’, which is based on financial modelling by research group, Oxford Economics. Given that growth forecasts for the U.K. economy have been halved to 1.1 per
cent for 2017, merger volumes will also dip by at least $240 billion in the next five years, according to the report. The uncertainty created by the U.K. June 23 vote to leave the European Union has already had an impact. Global M&A so far this year is down 16 per cent to $1.5 trillion (Sh153 trillion) from the same period in 2016, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. However, in the month since the U.K.’s referendum, about $103 billion (Sh10.5 trillion) in deals involving European companies have been announced, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
“In the last few days we have seen evidence that the M&A market in the U.K. won’t come to a crashing halt even if it won’t be at its previous pace,” said Tim Gee, London merger partner at Baker & McKenzie. “London will also retain a remarkable concentration of financial, legal and economic talent.” The study’s central scenario shows global merger activity to be “only modestly down for the next two years before fully recovering,” the report said. In a similar report in 2015, Baker & McKenzie, a multinational law firm headquartered in the U.S., forecast that fallout from a Greek exit from the euro
could wipe as much as $1.4 trillion (Sh142 trillion) from future M&A. Monday’s study has forecast a 40 per cent drop in mergers in the region, excluding the U.K., in 2017, compared with if the country had voted remain, Bloomberg reports. Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are transactions in which the ownership of companies, other business organizations or their operating units are transferred or combined. As an aspect of strategic management, M&A can allow enterprises to grow, shrink, change the nature of their business or improve their competitive position. Dennis_x254

Gattuso the hero as Gor close on leaders Tusker MONDAY, JULY 25, 2016
Reigning Kenyan Premier League champions, Gor Mahia, finally took advantage of a slip from log leaders Tusker, but only just, as midfielder Collins Okoth struck a late winner in a 2-1 defeat of unbolting Nairobi City Stars. The two teams looked set to share a second successive draw in the tie following the 2-2 first leg stalemate but Gatusso made himself a last minute hero, netting from close range after City Stars failed to deal with a long Enock Agwanda throw which was launched into the box. Harun Shakava gave Kogalo the lead halfway into the opening half, the returning centerback beating keeper Ronny Kagunzi from inside the area from a Francis Kahata corner which the visitors struggled to clear. Gor Mahia head coach Jose Marcelo ‘Ze Maria said he was moved in the manner the record 15-time champions responded having dropped points twice consecutively, being held to a 1-1 draw by Kakamega Homeboyz in Kisumu before playing to a barren draw against Ushuru FC last week. “For a while the results of the previous two matches were all written again. But the boys kept on asking deep into extra time when we were rewarded. That was great fighting spirit,” said the Brazilian coach. In other matches, Former champions Ulinzi Stars collected their first win of the second half of the season after a John Mark Makwatta-inspired 3-2 defeat of visiting Ushuru FC as the Afraha Stadium witnessed five goals,

three penalties and a sending off. Makwatta immediately canceled Kennedy Oduor’s 21st minute penalty spot opener from yet another penalty after Ogal Kelal handled the ball inside
the box, the striker beating Shaban Odhoji who has saved two penalties this season. Muhoroni Youth’s much-celebrated flight to Mombasa ended in heartache
Manchester derby in China called off The pre-season friendly in China between Manchester United and Manchester City has been called off because of adverse weather conditions. The surface at the Birds Nest stadium in Beijing had been described as “bad” by United manager Jose Mourinho after heavy rain in recent weeks. City boss Pep Guardiola had said his main hope for the fixture was for the players not to get injured. Both managers, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, had expressed concerns about the pitch at the Bird’s Nest Stadium following very heavy rain in the Chinese capital. A tweet on United’s account read: ‘Due to recent weather events, tournament organisers & participating clubs have decided to cancel tonight’s International Champions Cup game.’ Mourinho condemned the state of the pitch in Beijing where the first Manchester derby to be played on foreign soil had been due to take place and feared his players may suffer injury. Both teams had to train at the nearby Olympic Sports Centre on Sunday following concerns over the pitch at the Bird’s Nest Stadium after 24 hours of heavy rain. “I think Beijing is unlucky because the
pitch is very bad,’ Mourinho said. ‘The pitch and the conditions of my players are more important than results in pre-season. It’s not a problem for me to lose matches in pre-season. “It’s a problem for me, bad conditions for my players to train and bad conditions for my players to play. So if you ask me my objective for the match tomorrow I only have one: take the players home safe without any kind of injury. ‘It’s not the conditions to play a good game of football, but we have to play. We cannot just run away and disappear and not play. So we have to play and try to be lucky. ‘Normally when you say lucky you say lucky because you want a good result. The result I want tomorrow is to go home without injuries and that is the luck I want.’ Despite the best efforts of City’s deputy groundsman Craig Knight, who has been in China for the past 10 days to try and sort out the pitch problems, the weather showed no signs of improvement and the match has been called off. The issues started when a fungus affected part of the pitch, while other parts of the surface had been relaid with new turf, only to be damaged by the rain. 70 ground staff have been working around the clock to try and fix the problem.
after they suffered a 2-1 loss to hosts Bandari FC at the Mbaraki Stadium. Bobby Ogolla’s side took a flight to the coastal town for their matchday 19 clash with the Dockers, the ecstasy of such a
rare traveling mode all too clear from the club’s playing and coaching staff who shared photos of their departure and arrival with great abandon. While it is not clear whether it was a return ticket, Muhoroni will travel back to their stomping ground in utter despair after they lost the match as well as their leading striker Wycliffe Ochomo. Ochomo, scorer of a 70th minute equalizer after David King’atua had given the hosts a 42nd minute lead from a freekick, was given his marching orders at the death for allegedly assaulting Bandari’s team doctor, Bandari also had their keeper Wilson Obungu send off for a fierce protest. On Saturday, Two goals in two second half minutes saw Thika United stun their hosts Mathare United 2-0 in the opening matchday of the Kenyan Premier League matchday 18 hosted at the Nyayo Stadium. Allan Kateregga’s solitary first half header helped AFC Leopards edge visiting Sony Sugar 1-0 at the Nyayo Stadium, Saturday evening as they moved closer to the top half of the table. The Ugandan midfielder directed home an early header which Sony failed to cancel despite having almost an entire match to do so. Leopards went into the 415pm clash gunning to complete a rare league double over their visitors who they beat 2-1 in Awendo during the February 22nd first leg they clash. Charles Momanyi’s strike at the hour mark gave Kakamega Homeboyz a 1-0 win at Chemelil Sugar while Western Stima and Posta Rangers settled for a one-all draw at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.
Dan Mule takes over at the Den promising to bring glory and unity From Page 16 There was a scuffle that threatened to distract the peaceful process with Robert Asembo, the former AFC Leopards vice chairman and Amahwa alleging the process had not been free and fair and some of their voters had not been allowed to vote. The polling booths were opened at 7am and closed at 1pm with the tallying process starting half-anhour later an exercise that lasted for almost three hours. “It has been a great process and everyone has seen we carried out a credible process. We are satisfied with everything today and hopefully things turn better for Leopards,” the AFC Leopards electoral board secretary Irene Tindi said. Felix Shitsama was elected vice chairman with 1,613 votes ahead of Lawrence Ngecha who had 469 votes. The Organizing Secretary’s post was fiercely contested with Timothy Lilumbi returning to the post after beating former coach Gilbert Selebwa with just six votes.
Lilumbi had 920 while Selebwa had 914. Noah Wanyama, the father to Tottenham midfielder Victor Mugubi was third with 256 votes. Oscar Igaida was elected new Secretary General after getting 832 votes, beating Ronald Namai who managed 759. He will be assisted by Elijah
Omung’ala who beat Suleiman Angulu with a huge margin after accumulating 1,602 votes against Angulu’s 475. Oliver Imbenzi will be the club’s new treasurer deputized by Justus Makabila. The Executive Committee will be composed of Saul Abwae, Oliver Sikuku and Irene Mukabi.

which culminated in a bunch sprint on the Champs-Elysees, which Greipel won for the second time in his career. He becomes just the eighth rider to win at least three Tours de France, joining Belgium’s Phillipe Thys, Louison Bobet of France and American Greg LeMond on three. With disgraced Lance Armstrong’s seven ‘wins’ between 1999-2005 expunged from the record books after he admitted to doping, the record of five Tour wins, held jointly by Frenchmen Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault, Belgium’s Eddy Merckz and Miguel Indurain of Spain, is very much in Froome’s sight. Indurain was the last man to successfully defend the title, winning five successive Tours from 1991. “It would be my dream to keep coming back for the next five or six years and give myself the best opportunity of winning again,” said Froome. “I can’t say the novelty is wearing off. It’s such an incredible event and to be in the yellow jersey is every cyclist’s dream and the biggest honour in our sport. “I hope I can be back next year to fight for it again.” Froome used his podium speech to reflect on the attack in Nice that killed more than 80 people on Bastille Day. “This Tour has obviously taken place against the backdrop of terrible events in Nice and we pay tribute to those who have lost their lives,” he said. “These events put sport into perspective but it also shows the value of sport to free society.” And he also took the opportunity to thanks his wife, Michelle, and dedicated the victory to his seven-month-old son Kellan.

Chris Froome became Britain’s first three-time winner of the Tour de France when he crossed the finish line of the 21-stage race in Paris on Sunday. The Team Sky rider, who won the 2013 and 2015 races, is the first man to defend his title in more than 20 years. He finished arm-in-arm with his team-mates behind the peloton after Andre Greipel won the final sprint finish. “It’s like the first time, it’s amazing. Every time it’s special,” said 31-year-old Froome. “It’s an absolutely amazing feeling. It feels like a privilege to be in this position. I’ve always had my team-mates around me.” Froome’s three victories in four years follows Sir Bradley Wiggins becoming the first Briton to win the race in 2012. He had built up a lead of more than four minutes over the previous 20 stages and tradition dictates that the yellow jersey is not attacked on the final stage. Froome ended up beating Romain Bardet of France by four minutes and five seconds with Colombia’s Nairo Quintana in third and Britain’s Adam Yates fourth. Sunday’s stage to Paris began with a processional ride from Chantilly, in northern France, with the winners of the four main jerseys leading the peloton. Froome, in the yellow jersey, was joined by Yates in the white jersey as best young rider, Slovak Peter Sagan in the green points top and Poland’s Rafal Majka in the polka dot king of the mountains jersey. When the riders reached Paris the race became competitive for nine 6.8km laps of the city centre

AFC Leopards players Allan Kateregga (Left), Edwin Wafula (Centre) and Paul kiongera (Right) celebrate a goal in a recent Kenyan Premier League match. INSET new chairman Dan Mule.
Mule takes over at the Den promising to bring glory and unity
D
aniel Mule has promised to bring Kenyan Premier League giants AFC Leopards back to the glory days and unite the club as he takes charge at the den for a period of four years. However the immediate headache for the new chairman will be to answer the new puzzle thrown at him. What is a real AFC Leopards member? As opposed to an unreal AFC member or a fake AFC member. The question, and variations of it, has been asked in several periods of the clubs history and has bubbled again, one of a number of odd sideshows, in the closing stages of the fiercely contested elections and after Mule’s election. A cross section of delegates openly promised to ensure the new chairman who does not hail form the western part of the country, where the club’s rich support is based will be frustrated since he is not a ‘real’ member. “We cannot give our club to a fake chairman, he is not one of us and will never be. The club is for the Abaluhya and not Kamba people, “hurled a section of fans in unison. Mule was elected the new chairman on Sunday after flooring Maurice Amahwa following the day-long polls run by the Sports Disputes Tribunal at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani. The 48-year old businessman, who was a co-chairman alongside Mathews Opwora in
the previous regime, garnered 1,160 votes ahead of Amahwa, who managed to get 822 votes. Opwora had pulled out of the race on Saturday, throwing his weight behind Amahwa. “I feel happy after winning today. It was a tough race but the victory is for all the AFC Leopards fans. It was a long journey but we are glad we got here. The work has just begun. I ask everyone to work together regardless of whichever camp someone was. The bigger picture is the team, not individuals,” Mule said on Sunday upon his election. He says his biggest ambition is to make AFC Leopards a self-sustaining club as well as making it successful on the pitch. “We want to make this club as great as it has always been. Our progress has been slowed down over the last few years due to wrangles but we want to put that behind us. This is a new start and among the things we want to do is make the club successful on and off the pitch.” “It has been almost 20 years since we last won the league and that is not good for a club of our stature. This year definitely we can’t make it but next year we have to fight for it. We also want to make this club self-sustaining and in the next two years we should have our own training ground,” Mule added. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14
