Pressure mounts on Uhuru to sign Bill on cheap loans F
ive Members of the National Assembly have dismissed a counter-proposal by banks to offer Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) businesses cheap loans in order to stop the capping of interest rates through an Act of by Parliament. Jude Jomo (Kiambu), the architect of the Bill that seeks to cap interest on loans at not more than four per cent of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) base rate, rallied colleagues and dismissed banking industry proposals to cut the current lending rates by 100 basis points as “a mere public relations gimmick”. The MPs, mostly drawn from Kenyatta’s Central backyard have vowed to thwart efforts to kill the bill which has been described has godsend for Wanjiku. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has dismissed claims that it has been allowing importation of billions of shillings worth of substandard and fake drugs into the Kenyan market in exchange for bribes from illegal traders. The damning revelation by the Ministry of Health (MoH) shows that the board has continuously allowed flooding of the substandard products to pose under the guise of genuine medicine, putting the lives of millions of Kenyans at risk. In paid for advertisements in the dailies this morning, PPB chief executive Dr Kipkerich Koskei distanced the board from the allegations, terming them “a myriad of misrepresentation of facts intended to cause alarm and mislead the general public.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Pressure on Uhuru to sign Bill WEEKEND EDITION, AUGUST 12-14, 2016
From Page 1 Njomo, Kimani Ichung’wa (Kikuyu), Kareke Mbiuki (Maara), Abdikadir Aden (Balambala) and Victor Munyaka (Machakos) said the move by the Kenya Bankers Association is just ‘public relations exercise meant to persuade President Kenyatta not to assent the Central Bank of Kenya Amendment, 2015. Ichungwa termed the move the move suspect questioning why bankers made the decision after the passage of the bill. “If the banks indeed cared for SMEs and Kenyans at large, why did they have to wait until MPs passed the bill?” asked the Kikuyu legislator. He said MPs will not accept any verbal or signed agreement that is not anchored in law. “We know memorandums in this country from the political parties to the business world have been trashed and ignored and therefore any agreement that the bank will get into by the SMEs must be anchored in law so that there are penalties should any party default on their part of the bargain,” he said. He said Kenyans have suffered for a long time over interest rates due to cartels in the banking industry. “Our country is now made up of ten million beggars and ten millionaires courtesy of the cartels in the banking industry, President Kenyatta should listen to Kenyans and sign this bill into law,” Ichungwa said. Mbiuki urged President Kenyatta not to listen to cartels in the banking industry but majority of Kenyans who voted for Jubilee government. “In the manifesto of Jubilee, it was

agreed that the government must make life bearable to Kenyans, this is the time and President Kenyatta should act,” Mbiuki said at a press conference at Parliament Buildings yesterday. “Banks have charged Kenyans high interest rates for a long time and it is unacceptable as they are doing business unethically,” said Abdikadir. Aden said President Kenyatta should sign the bill as it is good for Kenyans. “We have seen banks declaring millions of profits every year, why is it difficult for them to reduce the interest rates,”

Cord leader Raila Odinga has also added his voice to the raging debate, saying President Uhuru Kenyatta should sign into law the bill capping interest rates for the sake of suffering Kenyans. The former Prime Minister said the option persuading banks to lower their high interest rates has failed and “a law has therefore become necessary to respond to the pain of our citizens”. “We have in the past adopted this route of persuasion and trusted banks to act in the interest of clients and would-be clients. But banks have failed the test,” he said.
Raila attributed the high interest rates to Jubilee’s sustained borrowing from the local market. “The Jubilee government’s borrowing from the local market is higher than that of any regime in the last 10 years,” he said. Deputy Minority leader in the National Assembly Jakoyo Midiwo has passionately disclosed that he does not borrow loans from Kenyan banks. Speaking during the Second Reading of the Banking Amendment Bill 2015 in Parliament, Midiwo termed the banks as ‘scandalous’ blaming them of stealing from Kenyans through their high lending charges.
Pharmacy board dismisses allegations of illicit drug trade within its ranks
“The allegations by the purported whistleblower that the board is allowing importation of substandard medicines into the Kenyan market in exchange for bribes is outrageous, malicious and meant to deviate public attention from the reality for personal gain,” Kipkerich said. The chief pharmacist continues to state that the allegations made by MoH were a long concluded case, with the case, spanning over 11 years, having been investigated by relevant government arms. The allegations, made public by a whistle-blower at PPB, were delivered to the Office of the President’s Efficiency Monitoring Unit (EMU). The board acknowledges that the whistle-blower was its employee, who was subsequently transferred for engaging in various malpractices. As such, the board claims the “allegations” are machinations of the whistleblower being disgruntled. The revelations show that the poisons board issued tens of permits to non-registered drugs suppliers between 2005 and 2011. The EMU which has been known to investigate on corruption claims, further says that the drugs come in as parallel imports, with the knowledge of PPB officials who also benefit from the scam. Further details from the monitoring unit reveals that parallel importation of pharmaceuticals has negatively impacted the quest to safeguard public safety in the drugs market. The law clearly states that parallel importation of drugs should be made known and subject to regulation by the pharmacy board. Parallel importation is therefore not illegal, thereby creating a loophole that has been exploited to ship in the fake medicines. And since the fake imports are sold at a cheaper price than medicines stocked by pharmacists and chemists, it is not unusual to understand the unprecedented growth of the practice as Kenyans rush to purchase them. This is not the first time that PPB has been accused of abetting the illicit trade of substandard medicinal products. In January of this year, the board disputed claims that at least 30 per cent of medical drugs sold in the country were fake or substandard. @ harrison_x254
New law to lock out corrupt directors of private companies from elective posts Directors of private companies who will be found engaging in corrupt practices will be locked out from seeking elective or public positions for up to 10 years should Parliament pass the Bribery Bill, 2016. Held culpable of any corrupt dealings, their firms will be barred from doing any business with the government for three years. The bill seeks to stem corruption from private sector players who have been largely blamed for fueling graft in government procurement departments. The Bribery Bill, which is an initiative of the private sector, was presented to the President by Kenya Private Sector Alliance (Kepsa) chairman Dennis Awori (pictured) last year on behalf of the business community. “We agreed that 70 per cent of corruption is in procurement hence the need for the government and the private sector to work together to tame this vice,” said President Uhuru Kenyatta in a past meeting with Kepsa. “We are ready and willing to work with government in addressing these issues especially in these turbulent times,” said Awori. Efforts to stem corruption in the private
sector have been necessitated by reports that 70 per cent of corruption in the country emanates from procurement departments which have business dealings with the private sector. The Bill has been fashioned to have private sector companies adopt measures against
bribery that could see those dishing out bribes barred from seeking any public or elective office for ten years. It also seeks to force those found culpable to pay up the full amount – five times over – as well as being barred from transacting any business with government for ten years, and face a decade long jail term. The Bill, approved by cabinet and now before the National Assembly for second reading, came in the wake of efforts by Kepsa to have private sector employees sign an anti-bribery code of conduct with their employers. According to National Assembly majority leader Aden Duale, the Bill creates a legal obligation for Kenyans to report cases of corruption. It proposes that, anyone who knowingly or negligently discloses information or informants and witnesses should also be held liable and risk a fine of Sh1 million or a years’ imprisonment. It also seeks to strengthen the judiciary’s enforcement of the measures with a clause giving power to courts to impose tough sentences. @wilson_x254

Intrigues as Mandera elders ban leaders from defending seats Mandera Senator Billow Kerrow has warned Governor Ali Roba not to defy the decision of council of elders that he should relinquish his position to the minority clans in the county. Addressing the press yesterday in Parliament, Kerrow said the decision made by the elders is binding and warned the Governor against disrespecting it. Kerrow said there are penalties spelt out by the elders that would befall the governor should he fail to abide by the decision. The Senator said there are financial penalties that would be slapped on the clan of the governor should he fail to abide by the decision. The clan according to Kerrow also risks losing two parliamentary seats-- of MP and Woman representative-- they were ‘given by the elders earlier this week.’ “The decision by the elders is always binding and the governor knows this very well, should he go against it there are consequences,” Kerrow said. “Those who defied the decision of the elders in the last elections were not elected despite being popular and the governor is well aware of this,” Kerrow
said. Earlier this week, the Gare elders after what Kerrow called intensive meetings decided that no leader from Mandera County currently in parliament should defend his seat in a bid to make the minority clans also get to the leadership positions. The method aims at making the leadership to be rotational among the 20 Gare sub clans. Governor Roba has, however, said he will defend his gubernatorial seat something that Kerrow said is futile. “He knows he will not win, he just made the statement to satisfy his ego, he is a beneficiary of the rotational leadership style and should abide by the decision,” Kerrow said. The Mandera Senator said the method of the rotational leadership as decided by the clan elders is meant to foster unity within the community. “It’s more about unity and prosperity of the community and besides those chosen do not serve their interest but the whole community knowing that their performance will be analyzed at the end of five years,” Kerrow said. “I’m sure if the current Governor
Kidero to vie for presidency in 2022
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero (pictured) has declared that he will be running for the office of President in 2022; in the same election Deputy President William Ruto says he’ll be on the Presidential ballot. Making his intent public, the Governor said Kenyans should elect leaders who can change their lives, such as himself, and not just those who have no convincing manifestos. He has also expressed confidence of retaining his gubernatorial seat come next year’s General Election making the case that it would pave way for him to contest for the country’s top post. “When I’m done with my two terms what is left to reach for? The Presidency,” he said at a women’s empowerment event last evening. Dr Kidero is currently preparing to defend his seat in a race that has also attracted Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and TNA Chairman Johnson Sakaja, Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru and former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru. www.capitalfm.co.ke

Kerrow, however, said the method
ruins the chances of developing leaders from the community who can hold national positions. “One of the disadvantages of the rotational method is that the community doesn’t develop leaders for national level positions,” Kerrow said.
Homa Bay town MP Peter Kaluma also said the method goes against the principal of democracy. “The majority should always lead the minority, the rotational method is not democracy,” Kaluma said. @sam_x254

NEWS WEEKEND EDITION AUGUST 12-14, 2016
Nairobi’s killer highways revealed The Thika superhighway has recorded the highest road accident deaths according to National Transport and Safety Authority half year figures, followed by Mombasa Road, Waiyaki Way and the Eastern bypass. According to the figures, more than 1,500 people have died as a result of road accidents, an increase of 1.5 pc from last year at the same period. Of those who have been killed, Director General Francis Meja says more pedestrians at 614 have been killed with a significant increase in motorcyclists killed at 388, while 347 passengers died. In the areas where the road accidents occurred, Meja says, “there is high population. The overall population of a particular city determines the exposure risk to road crashes.” The population of both people and vehicles, he said is a major determinant on road fatalities. “We register about 60,000 vehicles per year and about 120,000 motor cycles every year. When you compare with the accidents that we are recording, you can see there has been a gradual improvement,” he said. Most of these accidents according to NTSA occur over the weekend, with Saturday recording the highest, in what Meja says is because of drinkdriving. At the county level, Nairobi is leading in the number of fatal accidents at 16.3 percent followed by Nakuru and Kiambu counties, while Wajir has recorded zero cases. Other top counties include Kakamega and Meru. “One of the thing we have
analysed is that majority of these counties are within the key highways specifically the Northern corridor-the road from Mombasa to Malaba,” he stated. To curb the trend, he says there will be more public awareness on the need to adhere to traffic rules and measures to manage the risk factor of speed, as a major contributor of road accidents adopted. NTSA according to its Chairperson Lee Kinyanjui will also start fitting special detection machines in particular on public service vehicles, to ensure they do not drive beyond the speed limit. Already, he said there was an awareness programme targeting motor cycles riders ongoing. He said the newly launched driving curriculum will also help in restoring order on the Kenyan roads. Under the curriculum, all instructors and examiners will be required to go back to class for retraining in order to understand how the new system works. “From September, those enrolling for driving will not be taught using the old syllabus as the new one would have taken effect,” said Meja. It also require all drivers to go back to driving schools for a full course after every 10 years in yet another move aimed at cutting road carnage. In addition, drivers who are aged 60 years and above will be required to have a medical fitness report annually before renewal of their driving licenses. The regulations are also set to clamp
down on matatu drivers by ensuring only those above 30 years and with the requisite experience would be allowed to drive buses carrying 33 and more passengers. The new driving school curriculum
will come into effect by December this year. Another measure will include introduction of instant fines and smart driving license; which help in profiling of notorious traffic rules breakers.

trifecta of benchmark US equity indices hit record highs on the same day for the first time since 1999, as investors, hampered by a growing world of negative yielding debt, turn to US stocks in a hunt for yield. The S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite all closed at record levels on Thursday, buoyed by a surge in oil prices and a string of better than expected results from several of the country’s department stores. The long march higher in market capitalisations, which investors have characterised as one of the most hated rallies, was driven by an advance in the energy and consumer discretionary goods sectors, leading the S&P 500 to rise 0.5 per cent to 2,185.79 on Thursday. www.ft.com

CFC Stanbic posts Sh2.39bn profit buoyed customer loans CFC Stanbic Bank has recorded a profit after tax of Sh2.393 billion for the first six months of the year ended June 31. This is a 24 per cent growth compared to a similar period in the year 2015 where the lender posted a pre-tax profit of Sh1.959 billion. CFC Bank Chief Finance Officer Abraham Ongenge attributed the growth to customer loans and advances which grew by 8 per cent on the backdrop of long term investment needs. “During the first six months, we experienced a growth in customer loans and advances mainly driven by a combination of long term investment needs as well a working capital,” said Ongenge. While releasing the results in Nairobi this morning, he further attributed the growth to improved margins during the period under review, which was majorly driven by repricing of the lender’s loan book in line with changes in the market. During the period under review, net fees and income commission increased to Sh1.493 billion up from Sh1.43 billion that the lender recorded the previous year. Ongenge said upgrading of the banks system and digital platforms in 2015 further helped the lender achieve its profit, especially in a tempered business environment. Commenting on the results, Philip Odera, CFC Bank Chief Executive Officer expressed optimism in the remaining period of the year saying the lender has put measures in place to ensure the bank

Tourism authority releases hotel star rankings ahead of peak season
The Kenya Tourism Authority has released the official star ranking of hotels and accommodation properties in the Coast and upcountry locales of the South Rift, Central and Eastern regions. This follows an earlier ranking which covered Nyanza, Western and South Rift regions. While rankings among the three and two star properties remain fairly stable, only four properties made it to the luxurious five star cluster. The notice states that the rankings are done in line with laws and regulations stipulated by the East African Community (EAC) Classification Criteria, thus ensuring a standard procedure for properties in the region. Leopard Spa and Beach Resort took the lead under the Vacation Hotels category, followed by Swahili Beach Resort. Segera Retreat Lodge, located in the scenic Laikipia County played lone ranger under the Lodges category, with Medina Palms Suites and Villas making an unrivaled entry to the list of Five Star Villas, Cottages and Furnished Apartments. Unfortunately, no Town Hotel was deemed fit for the top league; with popular brands such as Fairmont Mt. Kenya, and White Rhino both in Nyeri County making the front line to four star properties under this category.
Commenting on the recent classification, Estelle Verdier, Managing Director for Jumia Travel (Previously Jovago), a leading online hotel booking platform, said: “Whether, looking for a downtown bed only service or checking into a five star chain, hotels plays a vital and catalytic role in the tourism industry, accommodation is key for any traveler and tourist. This ranking comes at a time when Kenya is rallying stakeholders in the sector to put their best foot forward and champion for the industry.” Verdier explains that each hotel is classified according to amenities, facilities and service expected of its peers in the same range. She has thus urged hotel owners to ensure that their properties make the best and most of available resources. The process of standardization and classification ensures that involved bodies weight specific properties against outlined metrics ranging from obvious features such as a working phone and Internet connection to non-obvious traits such as staff dining space and the condition of their uniform. The location of a property under Vacation Hotels for instance, plays a key role in its ranking. @kevin _x254

Demand for electricity on rise despite ‘low’ output
Kenya has seen an incremental rise in consumers’ demand for electricity, putting pressure on the country’s power producers to up their supply. The latest report from the country’s Statistics Bureau shows that domestic consumption of electricity went up from 734.45 million KWh in May 2016 to 748.31 million KWh in June 2016. On the other hand, total electricity generation declined to 813.49 million KWh in June 2016 from 839.42 in May 2016. In June, Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) announced plans to add some 2.5 Gigawatts (GW) of clean, affordable and environmentally-friendly energy to the national grid over the next 10 years. KenGen Chairman Joshua Choge said that the drive is in line with country’s vision 2030 initiative, where Kenya seeks to produce over 5GW of power. The move would cost the firm close to Sh1 trillion. KenGen plans to commission an additional installed capacity of about 720 Megawatts (MW) mainly from affordable, clean and environmental friendly sources. At the moment, the power generator’s installed capacity is 1,618MW (1.6GW). Among the projects lined up is a drilling programme for a 140MW plant dubbed Olkaria VII, which is scheduled for delivery by 2020. The company also expects to complete 25MW of an early generation geothermal wellhead project by June 2016, bringing the total capacity on wellhead generation to 75MW. Meanwhile, two projects, dubbed 140MW Olkaria V and 80MW Meru Wind phase I, are expected to come on stream in 2018. @Dennis _x254
State kicks-off plans to produce 4,000 barrels of oil per day Cabinet has approved plans seeking to help the country produce 4,000 barrels of oil a day as it seeks to meet its export target in 2022. As part of the plans, Cabinet approved a kitty of Sh3.2 billion for the upgrading of regions infrastructure to ease transportation of crude oil. The amount would upgrade the LokicharLeseru road to ease the transportation of a projected 2,000 to 4,000 barrels of oil a day from the Turkana oil fields to Eldoret from where the oil will be transported to Mombasa for refining. “It is envisaged the crude oil will be transported by rail and road from Eldoret to Mombasa,” a press statement sent to media houses read in part. It also gave the green light to replace the Kainuk Bridge in Turkana, “to allow for larger and heavier trucks to transport the crude oil.” Ultimately however, the brief reminded, the plan is to transport the oil to Lamu, via pipeline as envisaged in the LAPSSET Corridor Project. At a special sitting held yesterday, Cabinet approved the development of the Lokichar to
Lamu Crude Pipeline, which will be the main conveyance route for the Crude Oil from Kenya going forward. Kenya had initially planned to partner with Uganda in developing the pipeline, which has tapped into its own oil reserves but the latter preferred to evacuate its oil through Tanga. Kenya and Ethiopia are now exploring the possibility of having the pipeline link Lamu to Addis Ababa. “The two leaders committed to finalise an agreement on the development and operation of a product oil pipeline from Lamu Port to Addis Ababa by the end of 2016,” Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed announced in June following bilateral talks between President Kenyatta and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. At Thursday’s special meeting, Cabinet also approved Ministerial Budget Priorities for the financial year 2016/2017 and directed ministries to commence implementation immediately. @enock _x254

Germany’s airline to start non-stop flights to Nairobi
German airline, Lufthansa has reiterated its commitment to launch flights to the Kenyan capital following a visit from H.E Michael Derus - Deputy Head of Mission for the German Embassy. Derus paid a courtesy visit to Kenya’s Tourism Cabinet Secretary yesterday. They discussed the commencement by Lufthansa to deploy larger aircraft in Nairobi from September 2016. The flyer says it will deploy the widebodied Airbus A340-300 between Frankfurt and Nairobi four times a week beginning September this year, up from the current three weekly flights. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), the industry’s regulator, has stated that demand is holding up in Africa despite the underperformance of Nigeria and South Africa. The Association added that East Africa is delivering above average economic growth when the rest of the world is struggling to grow. Lufthansa, one of Europe’s biggest airlines, resumed direct passenger flights to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport from late October 2015 after an 18-year absence from Nairobi. Lufthansa General Manager for Kenya and Ethiopia Tobias Ernst said demand has been rising in the nearly nine month period since resumption, thus prompting the expansion plans. Last year, the German carrier said the Airbus A340-300 will fly between Frankfurt and Nairobi four times a week in winter 2015/16 and five times a week from December 11. LH 590 will leave Lufthansa’s Frankfurt hub every morning on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday (and on Friday from December 11, 2015 to the end of January 2016) and will reach Nairobi in the evening after a journey of more than eight hours.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala with H.E Michael Derus - Deputy Head of Mission for the German Embassy. “The return aircraft will take off from Nairobi as a night flight in the late evening and lands the morning of the following day at Frankfurt Airport. The flight times are thus optimally aligned to flights from Germany, Europe and the
North Atlantic. Lufthansa expects great interest and high demand especially among leisure travelers,” the airline said at the time. Deutsche Lufthansa AG, commonly known as Lufthansa, is the largest
German airline and, when combined with its subsidiaries, also the largest airline in Europe, both in terms of passengers carried and fleet size.
Tourist numbers up as less Kenyans leave the country The number of people traveling to Kenya has increased while the number of Kenyans leaving the country has fallen marginally, a new report from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has shown. The total number of visitors arriving through Jomo Kenyatta (JKIA) and Moi International Airports (MIA) increased to 62,872 in May 2016 from 55,180 in April 2016. The Statistics Bureau confirmed that the number of passengers who landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) decreased from 179,879 in February 2016 to 180,339 in March 2016, while passengers who embarked contracted from 180,712 persons to 180,396 persons in the same period. The numbers, though impressive, come at a time when Kenya is fighting to keep its title as East Africa’s leading tourist destination. In mid-July, it emerged that Ethiopia’s tourism revenue hit record highs in 2015. Ethiopia was named the world’s best tourist destination of the year in 2015, having posted a 20.7 per cent spike in tourism dollars last year hitting a record of $3.4 billion (Sh345 billion). Much of the growth of Ethiopia’s tourism has been due to its nine UNESCO world heritage sites, such as the 13th century rock-hewn churches in Lalibela, which continue to be a big draw. Ethiopia’s Tourism Ministry Spokesperson Gezahegn Abate said is Ethiopia’s growing popularity as hosts of international business events and conferences “had also a direct and positive impact in boosting tourism.” The country has been praised for its outstanding natural beauty, dramatic landscapes and ancient culture. The European Council on Tourism and Trade selected it out of 31 countries as this year’s top holiday spot.

Regulator to set stringent capital adequacy rules to govern banks
Central Bank Governor Dr. Patrick Njoroge.
Hot on the heels of the push for banks to lower interest rates, the banking industry regulator Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) is on the verge of introducing new guidelines to keep tab on the banking industry’s capital adequacy. The risk based supervision regulations will ensure that the banks stay afloat because like in any business enterprise that involves the commercial provision of products or services to meet a particular need, owners of banks require to be compensated for the resources that they invest to generate such services. This compensation needs to be explicitly linked to the entrepreneurial risk undertaken by them. The ICAAP (Internal Capital Adequacy. Assessment Process) demands that banks put an internal capital adequacy assessment process. The regulation introduces
a new method of measuring the soundness of banks not just based on the core capital as has been the case. With the introduction of ICAAP, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) will introduce stress tests with banks expected to anticipate market volatility in order to plan well in advance for future risks. Banks will thus be expected to present quarterly capital plans to the central bank of Kenya for approval, indicating how internal capital levels are adequate and consistent with their strategies, business plans, risk profiles and operating environment s on a going concern basis. This initiative is expected to do away with the need for banks to stick to a minimum requirement for capital but instead comfortably manage resources at hand based on individual banking needs.
“The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) recognizes that there is no single correct approach to conducting the ICAAP. As such, the focus of CBK is on providing high level guidance rather than prescriptive criteria on ICAAP methodologies or techniques that should be employed,” the CBK said in a statement. CBK statutory requirements require banks to maintain a core capital of Sh1 billion while the Treasury has introduced changes to have banks raise their core capital to Sh5 billion by 2018 in a bid to strengthen the banking sector. Through the new regulations, banks will have the latitude to determine how much capital is required to run effectively. @kevin_x254

Safaricom’s ‘Little Cab’ comes under fire as trademark queried
Safaricom, the country’s leading telecommunications company by market share, is facing its latest hitch as its ownership of the ‘Little Cab’ brand comes into question. It has emerged that Little Cab may have already been registered as a trademark by an outside party and Safaricom may not have the rights to use the name, claims a report from online technology magazine,Techweez. X News reached out to sources at both Safaricom and Little Cab to corroborate the allegations. Both sources acknowledged seeing the article and told X News that they were investigating the matter. Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore was not immediately available for comment. Neither firm had responded by press time. The person who registered the Little Cab trademark has allegedly taken the case to court to stop Safaricom from trading in that name, Techweez reports. The report further states that Little Cab has since moved to re-brand the app and will now go with the trade name “Little” as seen in the marketing banner for a jazz event happening later today. Safaricom, in a partnership with software company Craft Silicon, launched Little Cab in early July to rival Uber, an already-established taxi service in Kenya, which also has operations in other parts the globe. At the time, Little Cab was offering lower prices but Uber has since slashed
its fares by 35 per cent to counter the former’s offerings. Uber said last month that it welcomed the new competition. “At the end of the day competition is good,” said Uber Kenya General Manager, Nate Anderson who was speaking during a July 2016 exchange. Safaricom’s latest kerfuffle follows the less than stellar performance of its BIG
Box product, the telecom company’s response to last year’s digital migration initiative and the set top boxes that came with it. Initially priced at Sh10,000 Safaricom’s BIG Box was withdrawn from markets in August last year for software upgrades, according to Collymore. Even then, many consumers found the pricing prohibitive. Now priced
at Sh4,999, the BIG Box has not quite found its footing as some consumers have shown a preference for other set top boxes and digital TV service providers, including DStv, Bamba TV and GOTV. Before its withdrawal, the product only had 1,500 customers which was 0.06 per cent sale of the company’s estimated 2.5 million target.
Oxford Business Group in partnership with Strathmore University to help undergraduates excel in business CfC Stanbic Bank has announced a partnership with Strathmore Business School to hold a series of workshops aimed at giving 3rd and 4th year students from the institution practical skills on entrepreneurship and finance. Dubbed the Engage Forums, the sessions will take place during Strathmore’s Summer School Week and are designed to give students practical tips on decision making, starting and driving the growth of a business, among other topics. The Forums help undergraduates better understand the business world, exposing them to practitioners in a variety of sectors and giving students the opportunities to explore prospective careers. “As we have seen in emerging markets around the world, including Kenya, there can often be a discrepancy between the skill set of recent graduates and the needs of the job market. To help bridge this gap, we are rolling out the OBG Academic Programme in Kenya, in partnership with CFC Stanbic and Strathmore, to launch the Engage Forums and give students the chance to learn more about their future careers,”
said Ms. Veselina Kracheva, Country Director for Oxford Business Group Kenya. “We are privileged to work with Strathmore Business School to build capacity and help create an enabling environment that will help better prepare young people to participate in the new knowledge economy,” said Abraham Ongenge, Chief Financial Officer, CfC Stanbic Bank, who was speaking at the opening session of the Engage Forums. CfC Stanbic Bank’s initiative with Strathmore Business School comes at a time when the country is looking to diversify from traditional sources of income and encourage the growth of entrepreneurship as a key to economic growth. The speakers at the Engage Forums will include Elly Odhong, Head of Integrated Channels at CfC Stanbic Bank, Jibran Quireshi, Regional Economist at CfC Stanbic Bank and Veselina Kracheva from Oxford Business Group, among others. Students will also learn about the role of technology to provide clients with lasting and meaningful experiences in diverse sectors.
Strathmore’s Summer School Week is designed to give students practical tips .
Food and beverages lift export sector despite trade volumes The total value of Kenya’s exports rose to Sh49.86 billion, lifted in part by the country’s food and beverages sector, the latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has shown. This is despite a contraction in the volume of trade to Sh166.0 billion in May 2016 from Sh171.5 billion in April 2016. The analysis has confirmed that the value of imports decreased to Sh116.2 billion in May 2016 from Sh124.9 billion in April 2016. “Domestic exports by Broad Economic Category (BEC) indicated that food and beverages was the main export category in May 2016 accounting for 43.7 per cent of exports, while the value of non-food industrial supplies and consumer goods not elsewhere specified registered 22.7 and 26.7 per cent shares, respectively,” the Statistics Bureau said in a statement released yesterday. BEC imports indicate that Industrial Supplies specified was the main import category in May 2016 with a share of 35.8 per cent, while the values of machinery & other capital equipment, fuel and lubricants and transport registered shares of 19.7, 14.1 and 10.4 per cent, respectively. Food and beverage recorded a share of 9.2 per cent while consumer goods not elsewhere specified recorded a share of 8.9 per cent. The quantity of coffee auctioned at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange decreased from 4,730.8 metric tonnes (MT) in May 2016 to 1,717.3 MT in June 2016 while the average auction price increased from KSh 262.90 per kilogram to KSh 268.44 per kilogram over the same period. Beauty queen Salome Munyaka has overcome great odds to scale the heights she has reached. By becoming a finalist at the Miss Africa Washington Pageant 2016, she seeks to use the platform to shed a light on the horrors of domestic violence and abuse.
life was put at risk by my father as she had refused to return home. She ran to the government but they termed her complaint as a ‘family wrangle’ that she could solve between herself and my father. In the end she received no help whatsoever. Moving from Kenya is what saved her life. It took her to fleeing from her motherland to get refuge. Now as her daughter, whom she had no choice but to leave behind, I suffered for 7 years under my father’s wrath until I also fled for my safety. Now because I am in a safe environment I want to use this opportunity to try and reach out to other victims like me here in Washington and in the future, back in Kenya, to empower them to save themselves and also empower others like them.’
ON WHO SHE IS:
‘M
y name is Salome Munyaka. I was born in the land of green highlands a land that is home for over 1000 birds and unique animals a country known for its historical sites, the land from Eastern Africa, Kenya. I am currently a fulltime student at Highline College in Washington State and I’m currently pursuing my AA Degree in Business with an emphasis in accounting. It is with great pride and honor that I accept this invitation to be a finalist in the first-ever and prestigious Miss Africa Washington Pageant 2016.’
ON HER MISSION:
‘I no longer want to simply be another story but rather I want to be a voice and to raise awareness in my country that domestic violence is a serious issue and needs to be tabled and measures be put in place because it affects the future of the country. The generation of children we are raising is at risk. I am currently reaching out to the Kenyan community, to women and children who are victims in order to understand their stories and help them cope with it and seek help due to the trauma. I believe before we can go back to Kenya to save others we need to heal from our own trauma and seek courage and strength. We need to be strong for ourselves and others to be able to work together to help not only the victims but also the abusers.’
ON THE PAGEANT:
‘This pageant has created a first-ever, in the whole of Washington state, platform for young women from across Africa and the world to pursue their dreams and raise awareness for important social and political issues. I believe that for me and my country this is an opportunity to raise awareness and speak on the silenced issue of domestic violence.’
ON HER BACKGROUND:
‘Kenya has a rich heritage and culture centered on family and the man as the head of the family, usually having the last say on every matter. Unfortunately, domestic violence is not considered a problem or an issue in the society. The government terms it as ‘family wrangles’ that are handled at the lowest level of judicial control. This has led many women and children to suffer in silence because there is no place to seek help, not in the community, in the government or in the family. I was 14 years old when my mum was battered all night, almost to death, when she finally took the bold step and left my father. This led to her being stigmatized and reprimanded by society and by family, she finally had to flee from Kenya because her

We have a lot of in common! Waje revealed on working with Serge and Bushingtone.
ON HER VISION:
‘Should I have the honor of becoming Miss Africa Washington 2016 I will use this experience in working first hand with the victims around me, the women and children in Washington to start their healing process. I wish to collaborate with the existing organizations to help deal with the trauma that comes from domestic violence. I would take and use every opportunity during my one year of service to help each and every person that comes my way, through educating them, therapy sessions and empowerment workshops. I believe this will be an honor for my country as well as for me and I will not only gain a lot from this experience, it will transform my country’s view on domestic violence and will create the pioneer program to change Kenya and ultimately Africa.’ @christine_x254

Record-breaking Phelps streak to fourth straight 200m Olympic gold
Record-breaking Michael Phelps became the first swimmer to win four successive Olympic gold medals in one event by beating Ryan Lochte in the 200m individual medley. Phelps, 31, won his 22nd gold - more than any other Olympian - as fellow American Lochte, 32, faded to a fifth-place finish in Rio. Phelps finished almost two seconds clear of Japan’s Kosuke Hagino, with China’s Shun Wang taking bronze. Briton Dan Wallace, 23, came eighth. Phelps, who posted a time of one minute 54.66 seconds, has won more than twice as many gold medals as anyone else, with former Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina second on the list with nine. The American, who retired after London
2012 before returning to the sport in 2014, also has two silver medals and two bronze. Four of his 22 golds have been won in Rio, where Phelps has added 200m medley success to wins in the 200m butterfly, 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x200m freestyle relay. He could also win his fourth successive gold in the 100m butterfly after qualifying for Saturday’s final shortly after his 200m medley victory. Rie Kaneto won Japan’s seventh gold medal at Rio 2016 as GB’s Chloe Tutton narrowly finished outside the medals in the women’s 200m breaststroke. Kaneto, 27, beat controversial Russian swimmer Yulia Efimova - allowed to compete at Rio after successfully appealing
against a doping suspension - into silver. China’s Jinglin Shi won bronze, just six one-hundreths of a second ahead of fourthplaced Tutton. The United States won the men’s 200m backstroke title for the sixth Olympics in a row with Ryan Murphy taking gold. Murphy, who also won the 100m backstroke on Monday, sealed the victory in a time of 1:53:62. Australia’s Mitchell Larkin finished second and Russia’s Evgeny Rylov set a new European record as he won bronze. Murphy follows in the footsteps of fellow Americans Brad Bridgewater (1996), Lenny Krayzelburg (2000), Aaron Peirsol (2004), Lochte (2008) and Tyler Clary (2012) in winning the 200m title.

Dazzling Biles wins all-round gymnastics gold
American gymnast Simone Biles produced a stunning performance to win the women’s all-around Olympic gold medal. Biles, 19, who has won 10 World Championship medals since 2013, scored 62.198 to win her second Olympic medal by a margin of more than two points. Compatriot Alexandra Raisman got silver with Russia’s Aliya Mustafina third. Great Britain’s Ellie Downie came 13th, narrowly missing out on becoming the best performing female British gymnast in an Olympic all-around final. Biles, described by many as the greatest ever gymnast, had arrived in Rio as the overwhelming favourite for gold and the 4ft 8in athlete delivered in a big way.
“I’m very excited and relieved, I’ve finally done it. You never know the feeling until it hits you,” she said. “I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps, I’m the first Simone Biles. To me I’m just the same Simone,” she added in reference to remarks that her competitor knew she would beat them anyway. Having already led the United States to victory in the team event, she turned the spotlight on her individual brilliance with a dazzling display of power, agility and gravity-defying moves. She went ahead after the first of four disciplines with a score of 15.866 on vault, although she dropped back to second with 14.966 on the uneven bars, with Mustafina taking the lead at the
halfway point. Biles then turned on the style with an acrobatic beam routine that included a stunning spin to score 15.433 before a floor routine to samba music packed with energetic tumbles, including the move that bears her name. She scored 15.933 for that final routine and burst into tears when the victory was confirmed. The United States have now won this event four times in a row, following victories by Carly Patterson in 2004, Nastia Liukin in 2008 and Gabrielle Douglas in 2012. Biles has more chances for success in Rio as she is also in the vault final on Sunday, the beam final on Monday and the floor final on Tuesday.

Rudisha in action as Kenya’s Olympics proper begins today After a disappointing performance from the national sevens teams and boxers, Kenyans will hope to start counting their medals at the Rio Olympics on Friday when the track and field programme gets underway with the women’s 10,000m final highlighting the day. The mouth-watering women’s final will take place at 5:10pm Kenyan time with world champion Vivian Cheruiyot, African title holder Alice Aprot and US based Betsy Saina seeking to stop a strong Ethiopian team lead by defending champion Tirunesh Dibaba and world leader Almaz Ayana. But before the anticipated final, ‘King’ David Rudisha will take to the track at 4:10pm local time as the world record-holder starts his Olympic title defence in the heats. Four years ago in London, Rudisha produced the best race of the meet in the men’s 800m final, cruising to a world record of 1:40.91 that he holds up to date. But since bamboozling the world in his trademark front running long strides, Rudisha has endured a tough patch of his career, battling a knee injury over the following three years that saw his form dip. However, he redeemed himself at 2015 Beijing
IAAF World Championships where he won gold and after running a world lead of 1:43.35 this season in Hungary, Rudisha is convinced of retaining his crown to become the first man to win back-to-back Olympic 800 titles since New Zealand’s Peter Snell in 1960 and 1964. “Running a world lead time shows that my form is coming back. The race I ran in Hungary was great for me because that is the best time I have recorded in two years. My body has responded well this year and training has been good. I feel in better form since 2012,” Rudisha said. Prior to running the world lead in Hungary, Rudisha had been to two Diamond League races and he didn’t impress in either. He finished fifth in the Shanghai leg behind compatriot Ferguson Rotich, returning 1:46.24. His next race was in Stockholm, Sweden where he recorded 1:46.69. “It was a tough season after battling with injury. I’ve been working on my endurance and I feel I’m getting better. This season I’ve managed to run without pain and that has been the most important thing,” the Kilgoris-born athlete, son of 1968 Olympics 4x400m relay silver medallist Daniel Rudisha, said.

SportPesa & Kenyan Premier League: A PARTNERSHIP FOR GREATER FOOTBALL THE KENYA FOOTBALL JOURNEY TO WORLDCUP 2022
World Cup 2022 which will require a lot of hard work dedication and support from both the private and public sector. In order to achieve this, Football development is key from the under 20’s for major leagues.
Football in Kenya has been a sport of interest for many decades with locals supporting their teams in various tournaments that have been held over the years. The sport has registered steady growth with more teams signing up which has increased the level of competition and in turn improved the quality of the game. Recently SportPesa signed a four and half year deal with the Kenyan Premier League which is now referred to as the SportPesa Premier League that will see the Football Industry improve professional standards and performance of the clubs, coaches, players as well as referees while improving the competitiveness and attractiveness of the League to the general public. The football fraternity has a vision for Kenya to participate in the World Cup 2022 taking place in Qatar. SportPesa is supportive of this vision and is the reason that together with Football authorities they have set out to improve the game in order to achieve this.
The industry also requires proper facilities, proper administration which SportPesa has committed to improve. This will contribute to not only the profile of the sport but Sports Tourism as well. Proper facilities and hosting of exciting games against some of the International teams that SportPesa has signed is likely to draw interest from the fans across the region including Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. The involvement of SportPesa in the league is impeccable, driving football development right from the grassroots level all the way to the top of the league and National team. Furthermore the focus is not only on Nairobi but across the country as well. SportPesa is looking into improving the welfare of the players so as to ensure they exert themselves fully for development of the sport. Kenya has a lot of potential for CECAFA, and authorities have confidence in the new office as they have passion for football. With the right structures in place and with support from sponsorships like SportPesa Kenya is ready to take on the region.
In terms of Football development towards this goal, the youth coaches early in the year benefited from Coaches Training that was organized by SportPesa in conjunction with the English Premier League top club Arsenal. In addition to the Arsenal partnership, recently SportPesa signed international deals with Hull City and Southampton which comes as an advantage to the local football fraternity as players, coaches and referees will be able to interact with teams of calibre from English Premier League.
In conclusion we are grateful to SportPesa. The sponsorship will go a long way in achieving the League’s mission which is to build professionalism on and off the field in the SportPesa Premier League and its participating clubs, coaches, players and referees and ensure they always act together for the good of our sport and nation.
The football fraternity should look into sending a team to the next Olympics in preparation for the

Fiji thrash Britain to win Sevens gold Fiji thrashed Great Britain 43-7 to claim gold in the inaugural men’s rugby sevens, the country’s first ever Olympic medal. Pre-tournament favourites Fiji were imperious from the opening whistle. They dominated possession and ran in five tries by the break, Jerry Tuwai, Osea Kolinisau, Leone Nakarawa, Jasa Veremalua and Vatemo Ravouvou crossing. Britain looked shell-shocked and Fiji added two more tries, with Dan Norton’s score little consolation for GB. The silver was Great Britain’s 16th medal at Rio. South Africa beat Japan to win bronze as rugby made its first Olympic appearance since the 15-a-side version appeared at the 1924 Games, although this time in the truncated form of the game which has fewer players and much shorter matches. Great Britain were unbeaten in the competition going into the final, which they reached with a narrow 7-5 win over second seeds South Africa. Fiji started the tournament as top seeds after winning the previous two World Series championships, while the British side came together as a team in May. The South Pacific island nation’s first Olympic medal was celebrated wildly at the final whistle in front of the country’s
prime minister Frank Bainimarama. “I’m smiling, it probably stops me from crying,” said Fiji’s coach Ben Ryan. “The team saved the best until last. They played some staggeringly good stuff. We wanted to showcase the way Fijian sport can be played and wanted to put smiles on everyone’s faces.
“We made it our point that we were going to enjoy this because that’s the best way we play. “The entire population - towns and villages - will be under siege in Fiji now. “I’ll consider what I do now, but Fiji sevens always knew I’d step away for a while now. But hey, I’ll be the first Fiji sevens coach to not be sacked.” “I told the boys when we were up at the podium: is this even happening? Are we gold medal winners? Fiji captain Osea Kolinisau said. “I never dreamt of being an Olympian let alone being a medallist, let alone being a gold medallist.” On their celebration plans: “McDonald’s. We’ve been seeing it in the Olympic Village but we weren’t allowed to go. “The boys have been saying, ‘OK, you stay there, McDonald’s. When we finish here we are coming for you.’ I’m really looking forward to having a Big Mac right now.”

Arsenal v Liverpool to highlight EPL return P
remier League Champions Leicester City will get the new season underway in an early kick off at returnees Hull City but it is the Sunday clash between heavyweights Arsenal and Liverpool that will highlight the beginning of the campaign. Both clubs will definitely be gunning for the league title this season, especially after Arsene Wenger’s men finished runners up to Leicester City in their last campaign. Liverpool had a worse campaign that saw coach Brendan Rogers sacked and Jurgen Klopp installed midseason. The last two league encounters between the two sides have ended in draws, a 0-0 result at the Emirates last year before a 3-3 thriller at Anfield. But Arsene Wengers men go into Sunday’s clash on the back of impressive pre-season results that saw them beat fellow title contenders Manchester City 3-2 in Sweden last Sunday. The same cannot however be said of Jurgen Klopp’s side who have had mixed results in their friendlies. They lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the US in late July but bounced back to see off AC Milan in the International Chmapions Cup, winning 2-0. They then went down 2-1 to AS Roma but against bounced back in style to overrun Spanish Champions Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield four days later. Most recently, the Merseyside club lost 4-0 to Germany’s Mainz as Klopp tests his players to find a favourable starting line-up. Both teams have no major injury concerns ahead of the clash with the Reds only without defender Gomez and new signing Karius. The Gunners will be without
captain Per Mertesacker and Danny Welbeck. Sunday will also see Jose Mourinho take to the dug out for the first time as Manchester United boss in the Premier League when he takes his side to AFC Bournemouth in an early kick off. Antonio Conte’s Chelsea will however wait until Monday when they launch their season at home against West Ham United. The Blues had a terrible season last year finished ninth. Claudio Ranieri maintains that Leicester City will continue to play like they did last season and that they have no pressure to defend their title. According to the Italian boss, the target for the Foxes remain avoiding relegation. Everton will be at home against Tottenham in another match that is billed to be exciting. Spurs last season had a good campaign and were in the race for the title until the last three matches when they cracked at Chelsea. They eventually finished in third place and qualified for the Champions League. And coach Mauricio Pochettino has kept his valuable players with the likes of striker harry Kane and playmaker Eriksen remaining at White Hart Lane. Swansea travel to returnees Burnley while Middlesbrough will be at home against Stoke City on their return to Premier League action. Southampton host Watford while West Brom travel to Crystal Palace. All matches will be played at 5pm, East African Time. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City then close the day’s action at home against Sunderland in a 7.30pm fixture.
