IEBC bosses delay won’t affect election plans TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 , 2016
The delay in the appointment of new commissioners to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will not affect the preparations for next year’s general elections. Outgoing IEBC Chairman Issack Hassan said there is a strong secretariat of the commission that will give enough guidance to the new commissioners to help them deliver free, fair and credible polls in 2017. Mr Hassan who briefed senators on the commission’s preparedness to conduct the elections next August exuded confidence that the polls will be handled well even in the absence of the current commissioners who are set to exit office. He however said that their agreement with the Joint Select Committee that there had to be some time for the new commissioners to interact with the outgoing ones for seamless transition may not be realized because of strict deadlines. “Some commissioners have already started packing to give way to the new ones and therefore I don’t think if there will be that time for interaction and smooth transition as envisioned by the joint select committee,” Hassan said. “I however have no doubt that there would be anything wrong as we have

a strong secretariat in place that will guide the new commissioners and all will be well,” added Hassan. During their negotiations with the Joint Select committee, Hassan and his team strongly advised members of the committee against sending the secretariat packing together with the commissioners as it would take time for
the new ones to be well acquainted with election operations. The IEBC chairman said the secretariat have been well trained and are well grounded and knowledgeable of the Elections Operations Plan launched by the commission early this year that will be largely dependent on the management of the next general
elections. Hassan however did not confirm whether the commissioners will vacate office by the end of this month as recommended by the now-defunct Joint Parliamentary Select Committee on electoral reforms. “Election date cannot be changed unless through a referendum. I know
we are currently operating on a strict deadline leaving many doubts whether we can successfully hold elections next year, but it’s possible due the strong secretariat that we have in place,” Hassan told the Senate Public Accounts Committee. @sam_x254

Only senior lawyers should be allowed to file presidential petition cases before the Supreme Court, the Judicial Service Commission has been told. Court of Appeal judge Fatima Sichale while appearing before the panel to be interviewed for the Deputy Chief Justice position today, said the Supreme Court should be selective about lawyers it allow to file presidential petitions before it. According to the judge, presidential elections should be handled only by senior counsels as they understand the law and issues much better than junior advocates, who, she said, only seek publicity in such matters. Justice Sichale also proposed a lifestyle audit for all judicial officers suspected to be living beyond their means as a way of reducing corruption in the judiciary. “I support lifestyle Audit. I have expertise in fighting graft and this is what motivated me to apply for this job,” she said. She also stated that the transfer policy should be fully implemented so that judicial officers do not get too familiar at their posts thus resorting to corrupt practices. “You may recall those days that you wake up one fine morning and you find that a magistrate has hit the headlines they were caught red handed with bribe money.

There is absolutely no reason why we should not work with Anti-Corruption Commission and where we suspect there is a problem let investigator carry out the investigations,” she said. Sichale said if appointed to the post, she will ensure that everybody she works with adheres to the high standards set out in the regulations governing the work ethics in the Judiciary. “I am a very impatient person and I set very high standards for myself and also for
people who work with me. And sometimes when you set high standards you might not achieve them,” she added. She is the third interviewee to face the panel after her appellate court colleague Agnes Murgor and High Court judge Abida Ali Aroni were interviewed yesterday. Appeal Judge Hannah Okwengu was expected to appear before the JSC this afternoon. Sixteen candidates are seeking to succeed retired Lady Justice Kalpana Rawal who retired in June.

City commuters stranded as angry students block road Commuters using Magadi and Langata roads were today morning stranded after angry MultiMedia University students blocked the highways to protest the killing of their colleague in an accident involving one of the matatus plying the route on Sunday. Transport was paralysed for hours as the closed a section of Magadi Road and lit bonfires paralysing transport to and from Rongai. Four people were killed when a matatu from Rongai to Nairobi City center overturned on langata road on Sunday. One of the victims is a student of the university. The students expressed outrage over what they describe as reckless driving by public service vehicle operators which they said has continued unabated for a long time. Police officers were called in to quell rising temperatures among the students, lobbying teargas cannisters in the process to disperse them. The deceased was a recently admitted first year student at the institution’s main campus along Magadi Road. The fresher, who had joined the varsity during this year’s September intake, succumbed to injuries at the Kenyatta National Hospital where she had been rushed for treatment. The students closed a section of Magadi Road and lit bonfires paralysing transport to and from Rongai. Commuters were at pains as they had to reschedule their appointments as there was no movement to and from the Central Business District. The students also protested the critical injuring of another student after she was hit by a speeding vehicle yesterday while crossing the busy road.
Governors to sue in row over frequencies
Governors have vowed to move to court to rescind a decision by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) to deny them permits to establish radio stations in the counties. They say the decision is in bad taste and goes against the spirit of the constitution and the county government act. “The decision to deny counties frequencies undermines their function on public participation. Whoever advised CA, tell them they have violated of the law and the constitution of Kenya,” Council of Governors chairman Peter Munya said. Munya said certain frequencies were reserved for the counties when the regional governments came into being. But CA has refused to issue radio frequencies to 20 county governments, arguing that broadcast is not a devolved function. Nairobi, Kiambu, Vihiga, Kwale, Meru, ElgeyoMarakwet, Mandera, Busia, Machakos, Murang’a, Kakamega, and Bomet are among the county governments that had applied for radio permits. Instead, the authority has directed county governments to use the State-owned Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), for their communication needs. “The suggestion that counties use Kenya Broadcasting Cooperation (KBC) to disseminate information is clever strategy to undermine counties,” Munya said. @hillary_x254
Angry Multi Media University students protest along Magadi road early today. The students blocked the road to demonstrate the killing of their colleague in Sunday’s accident.
The Sunday crash occurred when a matatu from PSV operator Ongata Line Sacco veered off the busy Langata Road and overturned, killing
four and injuring several others. The driver of the matatu escaped soon after the accident and remains at large.
Yesterday, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) deregistered the sacco from its list of approved operators, effectively halting operations of its over 100 bus fleet that ply the route. All vehicles belonging to the sacco were further directed to report to the Police for impounding until further notice is given. It has also emerged that the parent company of the operator, Ongata Line Transporters Limited, had written to NTSA complaining of the ill-fated bus’ failure to comply with its code of conduct. The bus, registration number KCG 784M, had been noted for being driven recklessly, overtaking inappropriately and overlapping, earning it the moniker ‘ambulance’ for it was most likely to be involved in an accident. The Ongata sacco withdrew the registration service licence for the vehicle alongside 3 others but the bus was still in operation. The operator failed to withdraw the vehicle from plying since its owner owed the sacco millions of shillings when it stood as the guarantor when seeking a loan to finance the purchase of the bus. NTSA, they claim, failed to respond to the letter. Matatu operators yesterday took advantage of Ongata Line’s deregistration, hiking fires by almost 100 percent. Residents who commute along the road are also planning for a mega demonstration to be held this Thursday in solidarity with the student fraternity. Under the banner of Kiserian Ongata Rongai Resident Association (KORRA), they plan to stage a “walk-to-work” protest to raise awareness on road safety. @harrison_x254

Poll: Clinton wins debate round one
Hillary Clinton was deemed the winner of Monday night’s debate by 62% of voters who tuned in to watch, while just 27% said they thought Donald Trump had the better night, according to a CNN/ORC Poll of voters who watched the debate. That drubbing is similar to Mitt Romney’s dominant performance over President Barack Obama in the first 2012 presidential debate. Voters who watched said Clinton expressed her views more clearly than Trump and had a better understanding of the issues by a margin of more than 2-to-1. Clinton also was seen as having done a better job addressing concerns voters might have about her potential presidency by a 57% to 35% margin, and as the stronger leader by a 56% to 39% margin. The gap was smaller on which candidate appeared more sincere and authentic, though still broke in Clinton’s favor, with 53% saying she was more sincere vs. 40% who felt Trump did better on that score. Trump topped Clinton 56% to 33% as the debater who spent more time attacking their opponent. Although the survey suggested debate watchers were more apt to describe themselves as Democrats than the overall pool of voters, even independents who watched deemed Clinton the winner, 54% vs. 33% who thought Trump did the best job in the debate. And the survey suggests Clinton outperformed the expectations of those who watched. While pre-debate interviews indicated these watchers expected Clinton to win by a 26-point margin, that grew to 35 points in the post-debate survey. About half in the poll say the debate did not have an effect on their voting plans, 47% said it didn’t make a difference, but those who say they were moved by it tilted in Clinton’s direction, 34% said the debate made them more apt to vote for Clinton, 18% more likely to back Trump. On the issues, voters who watched broadly say Clinton would do a better job handling foreign policy, 62% to 35%, and most think she would be the better candidate to handle terrorism, 54% to 43% who prefer Trump. But on the economy, the split is much closer, with 51% saying they favor Clinton’s approach vs. 47% who prefer Trump. Most debate watchers came away from Monday’s face-off with doubts about Trump’s ability to handle the presidency. Overall, 55% say they didn’t think Trump would be able to handle the job of president, 43% said they thought he would. Among political independents who watched the debate, it’s a near-even split, 50% say he can handle it, 49% that he can’t. And voters who watched were more apt to see Trump’s attacks on Clinton as unfair than they were to see her critiques that way. About two-thirds of debate viewers, 67%, said Clinton’s critiques of Trump were fair, while just 51% said the same of Trump. Assessments of Trump’s attacks on Clinton were sharply split by gender, with 58% of men seeing them as fair compared with 44% of women who watched last night.

Sparks fly in Clinton-Trump debate
The two US presidential candidates have clashed over jobs, terrorism and race in a bitter television debate. The attacks turned personal as Republican Donald Trump accused his rival Hillary Clinton of not having the right temperament to be president. Meanwhile, Mrs Clinton baited Mr Trump by pointing out that he refuses to release his tax returns. The New York showdown could be the most watched debate in TV history, with up to 100 million viewers. Hours before the programme, polls suggested the candidates were locked in a dead heat, adding to the tension between the rivals on stage throughout the debate. “I have a feeling that by the end of this evening, I’m going to be blamed for everything that’s ever happened,” Mrs Clinton quipped when prompted to respond after one of Mr Trump’s attacks. “Why not?” Mr Trump interrupted. “Yeah, why not,” she answered. “You know, just join the debate by saying more crazy things.” Mr Trump was later thrown on the defensive by moderator Lester Holt for not disclosing his tax returns.
He claimed he was under a “routine audit” and would release the document once the audit was finished. But the hotel developer promised he would release them if his opponent released 33,000 emails that were deleted during an investigation into her private email set-up while secretary of state. Mrs Clinton made a brief response to Mr Trump’s attacks about her use of a private email server - which has haunted her on the campaign trail. She said there were no excuses for the “mistake” and that she takes responsibility for it. But she was also uncomfortable when defending her changing position on the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal. Other debate highlights included Mr Trump’s claims that Mrs Clinton did not have the stamina to be president, to which she replied that she visited 112 countries as secretary of state. Trump also said that African Americans are living “in hell” in the US due to gun violence while Clinton criticised him for saying climate change was a Chinese hoax. Mrs Clinto was attacked for being weak on Islamic State militants and soft on Iran with Trump mocking
saying; “You’ve been fighting Isis [Islamic State group] your entire adult life.” In a wider assault on his treatment of women, she said he had called women “pigs, slobs and dogs.” However, one key exchange was over Mr Trump’s long-held belief that President Barack Obama was born outside the US, a position he finally reversed two weeks ago. “He has a long record of engaging in racist behaviour,” she said, adding that it was a “very hurtful” lie that annoyed and bothered the first African American president. When asked by Mr Holt to explain his change in stance, Trump said he wanted to concentrate on bigger, more important issues. Mrs Clinton also attacked Trump for praising Russian President Vladimir Putin, and suggesting he “find” her emails. “I was so shocked when Donald publicly invited Putin to hack into Americans. That is just unacceptable... Donald is unfit to be commander-in-chief.” The debate was the first of three between the two candidates before the American voters go to the polls on 8 November.

Low production, cartels push up sugar prices by 16 per cent Consumers across the country have been forced to dig deeper into their pockets following a recent surge in local sugar prices buoyed by declining production across the sector. A kilogram of branded local sugar is retailing at Sh20 higher than it was last month and prices are projected to skyrocket should the government fail to take immediate action. Recent data shows that by the end of last week, locally-produced sugar stocks have declined to as low as 5,000 tonnes against the required 9,000 tonnes mainly due to poor performance of local millers. Financial analysts have also attributed the surge in prices to cartels plaguing the industry chain. The escalation in prices comes barely a month after the country embarked on a drive to secure cheaper sugar imports to cover up the shortfall. The move has proven to be somewhat ineffective. Sources confirm that over 15,000 tonnes of sugar have been imported this month alone to prevent a shortage that is causing prices to hike, adding to the 9,000 tonnes imported last month. The shortage of the sweetener has affected both consumers and retailers given that sellers have commenced a sugar rationing drive. Retailers have attributed the rationing

Kenya Tea Development Agency cuts fertilizer prices by 35pc More than 560,000 smallholder tea farmers will this year buy a bag of 50kg of NPK fertilizer at an average price of Sh1, 492, a reduction of 35 per cent compared to last year and the lowest price ever since 2010. Kenya Tea Development Agency Management CEO Lerionka Tiampati attributes the fall in prices to competitive sources that work on behalf of the farmers who deliver tea to KTDA managed factories. “Compared to the current market price of about Sh2,800 for a similar product, tea farmers this year will enjoy significantly lower fertilizer prices which is almost half of the current the market rate,” Tiampati said. Last year, small holder tea farmers paid Sh2, 300, for a bag of 50kg NPK fertilizer. The recent fall in prices has also been partially attributed to a decline in global commodity prices that has affected products such as crude oil and natural gas, which are some of key components in the manufacture of fertilizer. Tiampati says the fertilizer was sourced
from Russia through a competitive procurement process and would see tea output double thus improving the economy and the living standards of farmers. The final price of the fertilizer also includes costs such as clearing and forwarding, financing, handling and port charges, as well as transportation. This year, KTDA imported 74, 800 metric tons of fertilizer, valued at Sh2.2 billion on behalf of more than 560, 000 smallholder tea farmers. “Applying fertilizer to tea bushes bolsters tea production and increases the quality of green leaf. Application of fertilizer at the onset of the short rains is necessary to ensure consistent high quality and quantity of tea,” he added. The quantity of fertilizer a farmer receives depends on the number of tea bushes owned. On average, a 50kg bag of fertilizer is applied to 700 bushes. The fertilizer requirement is usually determined in November and December ahead of fertilizer procurement the following year. @enock_x254

Jumia Travel unveils plan to introduce new customized packages Leading online hotel booking company Jumia Travel has announced the launch of its first holiday packages in Kenya to celebrate World Tourism Day. The package rates are inclusive of hotel stays, spa treatment, meals, transport and a tour guide where applicable. This is in line with this year’s World Tourism Day theme, which seeks to ensure that both leisure and business travelers have access to favorable packages and services without any restriction or hindrances. This initiative will focus on popular destinations such as Maasai Mara, Naivasha, Tsavo and Amboseli in Kenya; leisure and romantically oriented destinations. “The move is part of the company’s initiative to promote domestic tourism, as we approach the peak season,” explained Paul Midy, Jumia Travel’s CEO. “This will therefore be quite ideal for families, couples, group of friends and even corporate groups vacationing in the months of August to December,” he added. Last minute plans will also be well catered for due to the flexibility offered by the packages. By either directly calling Jumia Travel’s Customer Service or by filling in a simple query form, the team will be able to organize for transport and/or accommodation at the same time, easing the hassle of travel and most importantly giving customers a memorable vacation experience. “Our guests come from different backgrounds and may present special needs from time to time. We therefore take every presented challenge as a chance to meet unique demands and tailor a product that ultimately satisfy the guest’s needs,” Cyrus Onyiego, Country Manager for Jumia TravelKenya said. Onyiego observed that the introduction of packages will be a great boost to meeting the company’s objectives to make travel in Africa both accessible and affordable. The packages will effectively allow for special requests as opposed to rigid itineraries associated with Online Travel Agencies. Accessibility to travel destination is both a marketing tool for sector players, as well as a vital contributor to the growing numbers of tourists and travelers. The packages will initially launch in Kenya and Nigeria, before spreading to other African countries. The company that now boasts the largest inventory of hotels in Africa plans to run the promotion on a yearly basis; while regularly updating the packages on the respective Jumia Travel’s country websites. @kevin_x254

Tuberculosis deaths set to fall by double as government prepares to launch new An estimated 155,000 children across 18 counties are set to benefit from new drugs to be introduced later this week, the TB Alliance campaign group has said. The drugs, which will be unveiled on October 1, 2016 seek to reduce TB deaths by double digits. Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu has said that the drugs mark a milestone step in the country’s health sector and will aid in combating the world’s deadliest infectious disease. “Now, with the appropriate treatments, we can make rapid progress in finding and treating children with TB so we can achieve a TB free generation,” said the CS. Once the country commences the roll out of the drug, it will be the first country not only in Africa but across the globe to do so. In the recent past, caregivers had to cut or crush multiple, bitter-tasting pills to give children the correct dose every day for six months, contributing to treatment failure and death. The new drug, however, has been given a sweeter flavor, ensuring that toddlers will be less reluctant to take it. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that TB has claimed the lives
of over 140,000 children and 1.37 million adults in 2014 and infected a further one million children. The TB alliance attributes the surge in deaths to a lack of market incentive, which is hindering development of drugs for children. TB is spread by bacteria when someone with untreated TB, often a family member, coughs or sneezes. Children who survive can become blind, deaf, paralysed or mentally disabled. The child-friendly drugs are the first products to meet the WHO’s 2010 guidelines for childhood TB treatment, with funding from UNITAID, which is hosted by the WHO. “No child should die of TB, yet for too long, we have not had the medicines to mount a sustainable response against childhood TB,” UNITAID’s director of operations, Robert Matiru, said in the statement. Kenya is a high burden TB country, with nearly 7,000 cases reported in infants and children in 2015. Children under five have the greatest risk of severe infection and death. @enock_x254
Government to begin Sh3 billion mineral mapping drive in December, CS Kazungu says A planned mineral mapping drive that will cost the government an estimated Sh3 billion is set to begin in December, the Mining Ministry has confirmed. Cabinet Secretary Dan Kazungu says the map out of mineral sites will form the basis for a review of the country’s geology and mineral resources and their distribution. He says a 16 member team of Kenya’s top geologists are on a search of an international consultant who will guide the team in search for a contractor who will do the countrywide aerial survey. In a past statement, Kazungu noted that mining is set to become the bedrock for Kenya’s planned industrialization programme. At the time, Kazungu was speaking during a tour of gold mining sites in Migori County. The CS revealed that the money will be spent during phase one of the project. The drive will begin with Migori, Homa bay, Siaya, Kakamega, Busia and in other neighbouring counties where hugemineral deposits have not yet been unearthed. Kazungu, who was accompanied by Migori Governor Okoth Obado, said engineers will also survey mining sites with a view of making them safer. “Already 17 international firms have applied we are still vetting them by December we will launch the project,” the CS said in a statement released
yesterday. “Mining is set to become the bedrock for Kenya’s planned industrialization programme,” he said. Mining currently contributes to about 1 per cent of GDP but Kazungu hopes to raise this to 10 per cent by 2030. “This is why we are having the Kenya Mining Forum on Wednesday and Thursday so as to discuss the mining opportunities in the country,” he explained. Over 40 mining companies from different parts of Africa are expected to attend the forum that will have about 200 participants. Deals of unknown amount are expected to be signed during the forum. Kazungu says the forum comes at an opportune time as the sector implements the new Mining Act that is expected to revolutionize the sector as a huge contributor to the GDP. “The move is expected to attract investors and make Kenya a regional hub for mining as it is for financial services,” he added. The new Mining Act 2016 is expected to streamline the country’s mining sector and open the gates for its development as well as ensure environmental conservation. The Act has been termed as one of the most progressive mining laws in the continent. @kevin_x254

WBG reiterates support for Kenya’s devolved The World Bank has once again reiterated its support for the Kenyan government’s move to implement devolution within its ranks. The global lender has stated that devolution, which refers to the transfer or delegation of power to a lower level, especially by central government to local or regional administration, is one of three pillars of the Bank’s Kenya Country Partnership Strategy that will run up until the year 2018. The strategy, which was launched in 2014, targets new World Bank Group investments of up to $4 billion
(Sh405 billion) during its five-year implementation period. Through the Kenya Accountable Devolution Program (KADP), the Bank is currently providing technical and analytical support to national government and county leadership in formulating policies and rolling out devolution. This support has also been extended to county governments. KADP’s current priority areas are: addressing the fiscal implications of revenue sharing, strengthening public financial management and at a county

governments from scratch,” said the Bank in a statement. “Promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 marked a momentous point in the country’s history. The Constitution provided for, among others, enhanced checks and balances within the government, an enhanced role of Parliament and citizens, an independent judiciary, and a most progressive Bill of Rights. Notably, the Constitution provided for a major devolution—not only of resources and functions, but also creating a whole new layer of county government,” the lender added. The World Bank notes that sweeping changes in Kenya’s policy and institutional framework have brought about a new regime of governance. Multiple new laws have been put in place—including new legislation on county government, urban areas, public financial management, and the transition to devolved government— as well as multiple national bodies and commissions with responsibility for devolution. Ahead of next year’s elections, the Bank has noted that the previous elections marked the official launch of decentralization, as 47 new county governors and county assemblies were elected and began the challenging work of setting up new institutions, as well as a new national senate representing each county. “Functions and funds have been transferred to the new counties, and new county institutions are gradually taking shape,” said the Bank.

Kiambu County to adopt costeffective road construction techniques Insufficient funds have prompted Kiambu’s County government to adopt cost-effective road construction and maintenance methods. The County plans to maximise the utilisation of its available funds in an effort to provide durable roads across the region. Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has confirmed that the move is part of the county government’s 2017 infrastructure plan. The county seeks to construct 3,500 kilometers of road that will meet a set of international standards. To this end, the government has employed the use of the soil enhancing stabilisers, a technology globally known as Soil Enhancing Solutions that capitalises on enzymes to modify roads, irrespective of the soils. This, according to Kabogo, employs the use of locally available screened natural material that is mixed with stabilisers to make it impervious to prevent water into susceptible base material, making it more durable than the normal murram roads. “Part of our 2017 infrastructure plan of constructing 3,500 km of roads across the county will be met through the use of this technology, that has been widely used in developed countries like Israel and India,” he said. Already, roads in Thika and Ruiru sub-counties used for piloting are almost complete with the county readying itself to roll it out throughout the region for access roads upgrades and construction. “We have partnered with companies from Israel and India to demonstrate how the soil-stabilising solution and use of nanotechnology is effective in upgrading our roads,” noted Kabogo adding that the pilot results were satisfactory and all the companies needed to do was tender. The county has opted for alternatives to the standard bitumen because the globally-tested options are cheaper.
KQ seeks aid from foreign investors as airline moves to sell off stake Kenya Airways (KQ), the country’s flagship flier is seeking financial support from potential buyers and may sell off some of the company’s stake in the process. The airline’s management is in talks with at least three foreign institutional investors and airlines about buying a stake in a bid to raise some much-needed capital. These developments come barely a week after KQ’s flight 415 from Entebbe burst its tires on landing at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on triggering a safety standards probe into the flier.. The national carrier has had a series of mishaps after it announced a full year loss of Sh26 billion. Whilst the carrier is currently looking to a turnaround plan to revive it to profitability, flight delays and cancellations, mechanical problems on planes, resignations of staff among other internal wrangles have dominated the atmosphere at the once lucrative institution. In a statement after the incident, the carrier assured its customers that no injuries were reported and that all was well but the Kenya Airlines Pilots Association (KALPA) has noted with concerns that the department charged
with the maintenance of the airline’s fleet is no longer doing its work and may be understaffed after a series of resignations from the department. Just last month, a Kenya Airways flight leaving Johannesburg for Nairobi developed technical problems on takeoff and was forced to abandon the trip with many customers who were mostly business people being inconvenienced Now the flier may be planning to sell off some of its stake to offset its losses. Standard Investment Bank Research states that the company did not disclose how much it plans to raise but has previously suggested that it may need about Sh70 billion. The carrier is also talking to its creditors, including banks, to amend terms of its debt and provide it with sufficient funds for operation in the short term. The government is still examining proposals for recapitalisation. The research firm indicates that the search for a strategic investor is part of a plan, drawn up with the help of US investment bank PJT Partners, to raise new debt and equity funds. “The biggest concern for existing shareholders is the level of potential dilution, given the negative equity
position of the airline,” Standard Investment Bank Research states. The airline is 27 per cent owned by Air France KLM and 29.8 per cent owned by Kenya government. The firm is currently working on a turnaround strategy that includes staff right sizing, and rationalising its fleet through selling off and leasing some of its surplus aircraft. The airline in January 2016 sold two aircrafts to Oklahoma based Omni Air international at an estimated Sh14.6 billion. An additional five aircraft have been sub-leased. The airline is however yet to sell its 30 acre piece of land at Embakasi. The airline is set to send home up to 600 employees and has already sacked 80. The company secured bridge financing to the tune of $200 million (Sh20 billion). The first tranche of $100 million (Sh10 billion) was received in September 2015 and the second tranche was received in July 2016. This borrowing is supported through an on-lending agreement from the Government of Kenya as a key stakeholder.
The airline’s management is in talks with at least three foreign institutional investors and airlines about buying a stake in a bid to raise some much-needed capital.
Kenya to clash with ivory trade supporters at SA forum Representatives from Kenya are set to address the trade of illegal ivory at the ongoing 17th meeting of the U.N.’s Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) kicks off in Johannesburg on Saturday and runs until October 5. The 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES (COP 17) includes proposals by Namibia and Zimbabwe to sell ivory stockpiles; as well as a proposal by other African nations led by Kenya to keep the global ivory trade on lockdown. The meeting will also include a proposal by Swaziland for permission to sell rhino horn from its stockpile to international buyers; and initiatives to bring greater protection to sharks and pangolins, a small, scaly animal regarded as the world’s most illegally trafficked mammal. The meeting comes against the backdrop of a surge
in elephant and rhino poaching in recent years in Africa, which has raised the emotional, ecological and economic stakes in this round of big animal diplomacy. Kenya, as part of a group of 27 African countries that make up the African Elephant Coalition, has already submitted a five-package proposal for consideration that will include destroying of stockpiles and seeking a total ban on ivory trade. But South Africa, along with most of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, favors trade. SADC members Zimbabwe and Namibia have also submitted proposals for an “unqualified” trade in ivory, insisting that “a controlled marketing system would allow the government to raise money to combat illicit poaching and for conservation programs.” “Africa has seen a calamitous decline in its elephant populations - between 15,000 and 30,000 a year -
from poaching and ivory trafficking, but he two opposing blocs, East and southern Africa, have been at loggerheads as to how best to handle the crisis,” states a report by National Geographic. Kenya recently burned 105 tons of stockpiled ivory, which represents the largest destruction of ivory in Africa’s history and seven times the size of any ivory stockpile destroyed so far. National Geographic’s report indicates that the action was intended to send a strong message that ivory trade must be banned in order to save elephants from the catastrophic effects of poaching experienced during the past decade. CITES is a global agreement among governments that regulates trade in wild flora and fauna or products derived from them with an aim to ensuring their survival. Over 180 countries are signatories.

ast food can’t be accused of being healthy in any way. Although the food option has been present in the country for a long time, the migration of numerous fast food outlets into the capital have made the greasy stuff readily available to many. Last week American pizza chain Pizza Hut unveiled its new screwball creation the Triple Treat Box in Nairobi. The box which consists of two medium sized pizzas, a chocolate pizza and chips going for Sh.1500 is definitely one for the books. Leaving aside the calorie count, the meal alone is not one that should be consumed by a single person. But this is not the only monstrosity that American fast food chains have released into the public. Here’s a quick look at some combinations we never though would see the light of day;

HERMAN ECHEVARRIA SR
@kevin_x254
eal Housewives of Miami star Alexia Echevarria’s estranged husband, Herman Echevarria Sr., was found dead yesterday inside a room at Miami’s Epic Hotel. His business partner Gonzalo Gonzalez told the Miami Herald that it’s believed Herman died in his sleep from a heart attack. “The Echevarria family is heartbroken over the sudden passing of our patriarch Herman Echevarria this morning,” Alexia said in a statement. “He was a family man, a hardworking businessman, dedicated to helping others and a pillar of his community that was loved by everyone who’s life he touched. We ask that you please respect our privacy during this time of grieving.” The couple were both featured on Bravo’s ‘The Real Housewives of Miami’ and cofounded Miami’s Venue magazine.
KFC Double Down This rather ingenious creation would have passed as any innocuous item on the menu except for the fact that it is a ‘pseudo-sandwich.’ It consists of ‘bacon, two different kinds of melted cheese, the Colonel’s secret sauce... pinched in between two pieces of Original Recipe chicken fillets.’ In short is a breadless sandwich that wants customers to consume more calories, clocking in at 540 of pure chicken goodness. Pizza Hut’s Hot Dog Bites pizza Another Pizza Hut mutant. This pizza should not exist but it does. Online reviews all seem to call the pizza iterations of a metaphorical death which is then followed by a long visit to the washroom. The pizza is surround by 28 mini-hotdogs and the bread comes in ‘regular’ flavor and pretzel bread, which does not exactly make things healthier. Krispy Kreme’s Bacon Donut Hot Dog Donuts on their own do not exactly represent a picture of healthy living but adding bacon into the mix is just asking for trouble. Apparently looking to make the most American fast food snack, this creation merges two of America’s favourite food items. It consists of a donut/hotdog bun filled with hot dog meat, raspberry jam, and chopped bacon. Dunkin’ Donuts Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich Yet again donuts make an appearance on this list. This combination consists of fried eggs and bacon between two halves of a donut that are supposed to substitute slices of bread. So clearly bread is no longer trendy. If you are looking to douse your ‘boring’ breakfast sandwich in heaps of sugar then this is for you, just be sure to work off the 360 calories later on.

It is my fault, says Ze Maria after Gor drop points
G
or Mahia’s head coach Jose Marcelo Ferreira has chosen to shoulder the burden of blame after his side failed to close in on league leaders Tusker FC following a 0-0 draw with relegation threatened Sofapaka on Sunday evening. The Brazilian coach, nicknamed ‘Ze Maria’ from his playing days with the Brazil national team says Gor failed to play their trademark passing game, instead choosing to hit long balls and made it easy for Sofapaka to defend. “Everything did not work out today and we didn’t play well. We know we can do much better because we showed in the last two matches what we can do and so I am very disappointed with me, not with my team. It is my fault when the team does not play well. It is the coach’s problem,” ‘Ze Maria’ told Capital Sport. “It is a frustrating result because if you want to win a league, you can’t gift opponents an opportunity. Today, we gifted two points to Tusker and the other opponents.” Searching a historic 16th Premier League title and the fourth in succession, Sofapaka put speed bumps on the defending champions’ hunt for the title as they now trail Tusker by four points, with five matches remaining before the season wraps. ‘Ze Maria’ is not losing hope as yet and reckons the two week break his side will have gives them an opportunity to right the wrongs from the Sunday match and return for their next assignment against outside title contenders Western Stima more rejuvenated. “We hope we don’t’ play like that again. We should start again and work during this time in training. Against Sofapaka, the old mentality of long passes and long shots came back. It was the best thing for the opponents. For the keeper the defenders, they can see the ball and it is easy to defend,” The tactician is also concerned that his side is not firing from all cylinders like they did before and the goals have suddenly dried up for the team. Among the things he hopes to work on is how his
side uses the midfielder, saying they have to play the ball more on the floor for them to create scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, Western Stima’s head coach Henry Omino has warned Tusker and Gor that his boys are ready to pounce and become surprise league winners if the two continue dropping points. Stima consolidated third spot on the log with their 1-0 victory on Saturday against AFC Leopards and Omino says if an opportunity presents itself, then they will pounce with both hands. “I watched Tusker play Muhoroni and to be honest, they didn’t play like a team which wants to become champions. If these two teams continue dropping points, then we are here and ready to pounce on it and become champions at the end of the season,” Omino offered. Stima’s ride to the end of the season is bumpy though as they face Gor, Ulinzi Stars, Chemelil Sugar, Bandari and Kakamega Homeboyz. Omino though is not cowed by the imminent tough ride and reckons his side is ready for the showdown. MORE ON THIS @ www.capitalfm.co.ke

Dier, Rose and Dembele are absent with hamstring injuries. Sissoko suffered concussion in a league win at Middlesbrough on Saturday and is also out as Spurs try to recover from an opening Group E defeat by Monaco. “The Champions League is a new competition for us and it’s important to have a strong squad for it,” Pochettino said. “We’ve signed several strong players to increase the competition in the team and now despite the injuries we’re still a competitive side.”
Spurs are second in the Premier League but after the defeat against Monaco, the Argentine is keen for his team to pick up their first European points. “Now we need to improve our performance, we need to win on Tuesday,” he added. “It’s very important to get all three points. We know it will be a very tough game but in our minds we want to get three points.” Tonight’s match will be the first trip to Russia by a side from England since Euro 2016, when the group fixture

between the two nations was marred by violence. CSKA manager Leonid Slutsky, in charge of Russia in France, is confident there will be no problems in Moscow. “I believe that those English fans who come to Moscow to support their favourites will enjoy a high level of hospitality, not only at the stadium but everywhere,” said Slutsky. “I’m confident that they’re in no danger. They have no reasons for fears,” he added.

Manchester City should discover the full extent of Kevin de Bruyne’s hamstring injury by tomorrow. The Belgium midfielder, 25, pulled up in the 81st minute of Saturday’s 3-1 win over Swansea at Liberty Stadium. Reports have already emerged saying De Bruyne will be out for up to four weeks, but it is understood he is yet to complete medical tests. City manager Pep Guardiola said after the game that he did not know how bad the injury was. “It looks like it was muscular, but I am not a doctor. It is a pity because he is an important p l a y e r , ” Guardiola said. “That’s why we have to have a big squad as everyone will help us.” City’s next game is a Champions League trip to Celtic tomorrow.

Leicester City keeper Kasper Schmeichel could return for his side’s first ever Champions League game at home when they host Porto tonight in one of their toughest tests in the competition. Schmeichel has been out for three games since the Foxes beat Club Brugge in their opening Group G game. The Denmark international missed two games with concussion and was sidelined for the defeat at Manchester United on Saturday with a muscle strain. French midfielder Nampalys Mendy misses the game with an ankle injury. “It is fantastic for our fans,” said Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri. “A lot of them came to Bruges to hear the music. On Tuesday a lot (more of) them can hear it,” he said adding; “It will be fantastic to continue the fairytale for them and we hope to produce good football and a victory.” Leicester City striker Islam Slimani was signed by the club from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in the summer and has scored five goals in his last three games against Porto. “He’s a goalscorer and has scored a lot of goals against Porto and I’m sure he’ll be a threat to them,” added Ranieri. “Slimani scores so many times against Porto I am thinking if he’s going to play or not. “Yes, I spoke with him about Porto. We have a lot of respect for Porto, they are a more experienced team in Europe than us because they have played so many matches in the Champions League and are used to staying at the top of their league and have won six titles in the last 10 years. We respect them a lot but we also try to win. Both teams want to win.” Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspurs travel to Russia where they will face hosts CSKA Moscow. Striker Harry Kane remains sidelined with an ankle injury for the side’s Champions League group game while Mauricio Pochettino is also set to miss the services of left-back Danny Rose and midfielders Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele and Moussa Sissoko.

Burnley’s record signing Jeff Hendrick scored his first goal for the club to help his side beat a lacklustre Watford in the Premier League. The hosts had carried the greater threat and Hendrick headed in from a Steven Defour cross for the opener. Troy Deeney had a rare Hornets shot saved before Defour crossed for Michael Keane to nod in a second for Burnley. Isaac Success went close late on for Watford but the Clarets easily held on for a second league win of the season. The victory moved Burnley level on seven points with Watford. Watford beat Manchester United last time out but they were a different side on Monday as they managed just one effort on target in the first half, an Odion Ighalo header easily saved by keeper Tom Heaton. The visitors might have thought Dean Marney was offside in the build-up to opener - and also thought Defour’s delivery went out of play - but their defending still left plenty to be desired. Burnley went into the game as this season’s lowest scorers in the Premier League with three goals.

Red hot Olunga can’t just stop scoring TUESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2016
Michael Olunga was on target yet again for Djurgardens FC as the team won 3-1 away at Norrkoping in the Swedish top flight. The Kenyan international scored on the 55th minute to give his team a 2-0 lead at the Östgötaporten stadium, just five minutes after teammate Niklas Gurnnasson had opened the scoring. The host then pulled a goal back through Kalm Holmberg but the visitors put the game beyond their reach when substitute Daniel Berntsen scored with six minutes to go. Djurgardens coach Mark Dempsey had praise for Olunga although the striker was substituted with on the 83rd minute after picking up a yellow card for a mistimed challenge on an opponent. Olunga who has been in fine form in over the last few weeks has helped his team climb out of the relegation zone with his crucial match winning strikes. His coach now believes it is only a matter of time before elite clubs in Euope line up for his signature. And should that happen, Dempsey, born in Manchester and a former Old Trafford midfielder, adds that the club will not hesitate to listen to ‘sweet’ offers for the player whose form has continued to rise in the recent months. “It might only be his first season with the club, but his efforts are tremendous, he has risen to greater level. We are all happy for the player,” Dempsey said of Olunga.
“His goals have been very crucial for us lately. A few weeks ago, we were in the relegation zone. It is fair to say his goals have been immense for us and the rise we have witnessed recently as a club,” he said before adding; “Yes, he is a very key member of the team and we want to keep him, however some offers are too good to refuse.” Djurgardens had better early exchanges of the match with Olunga forcing a save out of Norrkoping keeper Michael Langer for a fruitless corner. Olunga was at it again in the 34th minute but his header went inches wide with Langer well beaten. After the break, the game opened up even more and the visitors drew first blood when Norwegian forward Gunnarsson beat his markers to score the opener. Olunga then exchanged neat passes with Othman El Kabir to score the second goal for the hosts. It was a sublime finish from his best foot, the left. El Kabir was at it again, combining well with Daniel Berntsen to slot in the match winner. Despite occupying the 11th position on the table with 31 points, Djurgadens are one of the in-form teams in the league now having won four of their last five league matches. Malmö FF, who lost to Djurgadens 3-1 last week, top the table standings with 54 points. Djurgadens will next host sixth placed Orebro on Sunday. @amos_x254

Real test for Madrid in B. Dortmund clash
Real Madrid travel to Borussia Dortmund hoping a change of competition will lead to a change of fortune as Zinedine Zidane’s stuttering side take on the in-form German giants in the Champions League tonight. The match will be the highlight clash even as Leicester City of England and French side Monaco seek to build on potentially crucial away victories last time out. Other matches will see Serie A champions Juventus play away at Dinamo Zagreb while Tottenham travel to CSKA Moscow. Madrid started the season in style, extending their winning run in La Liga from last term to a club-record 16 successive wins as well as lifting the UEFA Super Cup and beating Sporting Lisbon in their Champions League opener. However, the European champions have not seen things go so smoothly in recent weeks. They needed two goals right at the death to turn defeat into victory against Sporting at the Bernabeu, were held 1-1 at home by Villarreal last Wednesday and then dropped two more points at newly-promoted Las Palmas at the weekend. Talisman Cristiano Ronaldo looked far from impressed at being substituted with 18 minutes to go in Gran Canaria, but he and Madrid will now be hoping to take any frustrations out on Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park. Former Dortmund defender Jurgen Kohler does not believe that will happen, though. He has warned Madrid - who have won
only four times in 29 matches away to German sides down the years - they should brace themselves to return to Spain empty-handed. “Real aren’t in the best of shape right now and they’ve had a few problems in the league, and it’s quite normal for Real to struggle early on in the season,” Kohler told the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper. Dortmund have made an impressive start to their own campaign, scoring 20 goals in their last four games - including a 6-0 away mauling of Legia Warsaw in their opening Champions League Group F match. Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel is still missing Marco Reus, Neven Subotic and Erik Durm and is also expected to be without former Barcelona defender Marc Bartra again, with Matthias Ginter deputising at centre-back and Julian Weigl holding things together in front of the defence. The 21-year-old Weigl said on his club’s website: “To be involved in a game like this is what you dream of as a kid. When you hear the Champions League anthem, it’s a special moment for me and you dream of this as a kid. It’s a great feeling.” Madrid boss Zidane has named a 22-man squad for the match, with full-back Fabio Coentrao available for the first time since April after suffering an injury while on loan at Monaco. Brazilian duo Marcelo and Casemiro are absent.
