SPRING HAS SPRUNG
My oh my, this year is flying by! We here at X-Press Fashion can barely believe that it’s already September – where has the year gone? Though we may be struggling to deal with the fact that we’re a year older and that 2011 is nearly upon us, we are super excited about September for one main reason – the Perth Fashion Festival! Kicking off on Thursday, September 9, and running ’til Wednesday, September 15, the Perth Fashion Festival will showcase various designers’ spring collections, giving the West Australian fashion industry the attention it deserves. Flick to page 26 for a rundown on one of our favourite PFF events, Popsicle. Organised by the William Street Collective, Popsicle will take over the Perth Cultural Centre for the duration of the festival, offering up creations from emerging WA designers. Tickets for PFF events are selling like hotcakes, so if you don’t want to miss out on front row action, better jump online to perthfashionfestival.com.au quick smart! Ahead of the launch of PFF, we’ve rounded up this season’s hottest trends in two fabulous photoshoots – Let Them Eat Cake and Skate And Destroy. Shot on location at the supremely beautiful Queen Of Theme showroom in North Perth, Let Them Eat Cake celebrates pretty pastels that are perfect for spring. Furnished by the super stylish Jane Fordham, Queen Of Theme is a haven for brides-to-be and event decorators, and for one special day, Queen Of Theme welcomed the team from X-Press Fashion. Many thanks to Jane for letting us utilise her magnificent showroom – Let Them Eat Cake wouldn’t have been possible without her stunning furniture and decorations. In stark contrast to the pastel paradise that is Let Them Eat Cake, our menswear shoot, Skate And Destroy, was shot on location around Perth, showcasing Australian menswear labels such as Faux Pas, ML Denim and Nana Judy. Featuring professional skateboarder Dylan Tomlinson, Skate And Destroy is an ode to skate fashion and street trends. In addition to these two shoots you’ll find spring trend reports for lads and lasses, plus a rundown on hairstyles direct from the runway, complete with instructions so that you can do the doos in the comfort of your own home. Without further ado, let the spring fling begin! Emma Bergmeier

This spring, fashion takes its cues from the wardrobe of Marie Antoinette, offering up lashings of pastels with plenty of lilac, baby pink and marvelous mint green. Expect an abundance of bows, floral fabrics and feminine details, with oodles of digital prints for those who favour a contemporary look. Androgyny is out and femininity is in this season, so embrace your inner girly-girl by investing in ballet skirts, fabulous frocks and floral accessories. Take inspiration from ornately decorated cupcakes, delicate macaroons and fragile flowers to become a modern day Marie adorned with frills, lace and beautiful blooms. If an up-to-date take on the French aristocratic look doesn’t tickle your fancy, then perhaps the Daisy Duke look is more your style. Every denim label under the sun will be serving up cut off denim shorts this summer, so whether you’re after a knee-length or cheeky cut, you won’t have difficulty finding the perfect pair. Denim shirts are also going to be all the rage during the warmer months – opt for a lighter wash denim to complement the many floral prints that will be available this season. Whether you’re mad about the Marie Antoinette look or are determined to dress like Miss Duke, a pair of Swedish inspired clogs is a must this summer. More dressy than thongs, more comfortable than heels, clogs are going to be everywhere this season, with many high street fashion stores already stocking them on their shelves. Betts has a really cute pink suede pair that go by the name of Jinx, and Gorman stores around the country are stocking many pastel coloured Hasbeen clogs that are chic and exceptionally comfortable. Relive your childhood by pairing your clogs with frilled ankle socks in pastel colours – American Apparel has a great selection. As the weather slowly warms in the lead up to summer, many of us sand gropers will embark on the hunt to find the perfect swimsuit and this season it’s all about 1950s style bikinis. Check out designers such as Karen Neilsen, Hotel Bondi Swim and Zimmermann, who have crafted beautiful high-waisted bikini sets inspired by the swimwear of years gone by. If you indulged in a few too many cupcakes over winter, fret not because one-pieces are still in vogue this season. Look for structured onesies in polka dot or gingham prints, which flatter the female form. If your bank account is faring well, take the plunge and dye your hair lilac, pink or baby blue – we guarantee it’s worth the hours you’ll need to spend waiting in the salon while the dye sets. Look no further than Head Studio if you’re thinking of adopting this look – they have the know-how and skills to ensure that you will leave the salon looking like a Sretsis girl (pictured) rather than a B-grade punk rocker. Whichever look you choose this spring, you’ll find plenty of inspiration in the following pages… so without further ado, X-Press Fashion hopes you enjoy the pastel paradise that is Let Them Eat Cake. POPSICLE
As a child, I would often venture down my street to the corner deli to spend my precious pocket money on icy cold popsicles to beat the heat on sweltering summer days. Whether I opted for a Twin Pole, a Funny Face, a Frosty Fruit or a Paddlepop, I was always satisfied with my decision, savoring every lick as I wandered home. Years on and I’m still enjoying popsicles, albeit of a different kind, care of the William Street Collective. For the duration of the Perth Fashion Festival, the William Street Collective will invite the public to share in the sweetness of Popsicle, a pop-up shop in the Perth Cultural Centre that will serve up tantalising creations from WA designers. “The William Street Collective is all about supporting our local creative peeps,” explains Lake Bovell, one of the masterminds behind the organisation. “Popsicle was designed as a platform for supporting emerging fashion and accessory designers - giving newcomers a chance to show off their wares in a high profile event and gain valuable market experience. “We think it’s important for the Festival to be made up of all kinds of events - not just big catwalk parades. Popsicle adds another layer, resulting in the Festival reaching different groups of consumers, and supporting local designers in a variety of ways that are suitable for where they are at in their careers.” In previous years, Popsicle has taken over a bus and an unoccupied building on William Street, and in 2010, the folks from the Collective will cast their magic on two sea containers. “This year’s Popsicle is taking a slight nautical slant. It is being housed in two sea containers in the middle of the Perth Cultural Centre. We
are super excited about the space, and are getting our hands dirty converting wooden shipping crates for furnishings and learning how to tie knots!” enthuses Bovell. In addition to nautical decorations, those who visit Popsicle will discover the wares of designers such as Lonely 8-Bit Heroes, Bo Ra, Heart City Design, Bad Hair Mountain, Leah Tarlo, Love Is My Velocity and many more. “We have an amazing selection of designers taking part,” shares Bovell of the upcoming event. “A few that I can’t personally wait to have first dibs on are: the super talented student designer, Ellie Meyer, who is presenting her slightly creepy but absolutely amazing Prufrock jewellery collection; Kiss Me Quick’s range of super high-quality vintage inspired lingerie is absolutely stunning; Little Gracie, a 2010 WA Fashion Awards nominee, and PeppermintMilk; both have super fine collections of dresses coming our way; and accessories galore... I can see myself with a big credit card bill at the end of this! In all we have 15 designers taking part - both men’s and women’s clothing, jewellery, accessories, magazines and art will be available.” As always, the folks from the Collective will commemorate the event with an OnWilliam magnet set that can be collected from retailers located on and around William Street in Northbridge. Designed by Sean Morris, with 17 pieces in total, the magnet set will encourage pedestrians to search out all of Northbridge’s treasures. Whether you’re craving something sweet, or want to support WA designers and artists, Popsicle is sure to satisfy your appetite. Find out more about the event at onwilliam.com.au.

As spring rolls around once more it’s time to book in to be waxed, plucked, dyed and cut. The less you plan to wear in summer, the more you need to prep your hair (and not just the hair on your head!). Spring is also the perfect time to revamp your colour and change your cut to suit the warmer months. Get rid of dark colours and sharp cuts in favour of flowing locks and sun kissed tresses. This year several trends have emerged from the catwalks. Here we take you through how to get the latest looks with ease.
LISA HO Redken Hair Director Kenneth Stoddart wanted a classic, elegant shape for
X- PRESS FASHION SPRING
the hair at Lisa Ho’s RAFW show this year. Coined the ‘flower pot chignon’ the Lisa Ho models looked elegant and understated with hair inspired by early century well-to-do Parisiennes. The best thing is that it’s easy to replicate at home. Start by blow-drying the hair with Sebastian Thickefy Foam ($39.00) to create texture. Pull the hair back into a ponytail just below the crown and add a false ponytail to the top for a fuller head of hair. Wrap the ponytail into a conical or flower-pot shaped chignon and secure with large bobby pins. Finish with Redken Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray ($25.00) to hold it all in place.
KSUBI Jon Pulitano is the hair maestro from Redken who created the 70s rock n roll look at the Ksubi show this year. Parting the hair in the centre, Jon styled the hair so it was straight, smooth and one length for maximum impact. Fringes were full and slightly curved to frame the face and emphasize the cheekbones. To get this look at home apply Redken Rootful 06 Root Lifting Spray ($28.95) to the roots of towel dried hair. Next blow-dry the hair as smooth as possible with a large brush – we suggest using a Mason Pearson Large Extra Pure Bristle Brush ($290). Then start at the back and take small sections of hair and spray with GHD Thermal Protector ($30.00) for protection from heat. Straighten the hair all over using a GHD IV Styler $299 (you can’t beat them!) for an ultra straight and smooth finish. Spray with hairspray to hold the style in place. My advice? Don’t attempt this on a high humidity day – it will only end in tears (and frizz!).
SABATINI It was Luke Davis, L’Oréal Professionnel’s talented Hair Director who created
Sabatini
the beautiful soft hair at the Sabatini show this year. The look is made up of three parts and is perhaps the most complex to re-create at home – but worth it if you can do it (because you’re worth it!). Work a small amount of L’Oréal Professionnel Texture Expert Gelée Cashmere ($35.00) through the lengths of damp hair to thicken and add body. Follow by double moussing the hair with L’Oréal Professionnel Texture Expert Mousse Volupté ($35.00) for volume and hold. Next blow-dry the hair with a perfect centre part. Using curling tongs, start on the top layers of hair and curl sections only to eye level. Pin to scalp and allow to set. Repeat the process until all hair lengths are curled. Once cool, remove pins and brush out just at the ends. For the last 10 cm of hair at the bottom, tease lightly and kink with a crimper using a backcombing motion to create the ruffled ends. Finish with hairspray to hold style in place. And before you start any of this - make sure to prep your hair. The better the foundation, the easier your hair will be to style. We’re currently loving Burt’s Bees More Moisture Raspberry and Brazil Nut Shampoo and Conditioner ($19.95) each. Also try their Shea and Grapefruit Deep Conditioner ($19.95). Burt’s Bees products are divine and they smell suitably fruity – perfect to get you (and your hair) in the mood for balmy summer evenings spent sipping cocktails! By Caitlin Irving
