Jazz Band As many winter activities such as speech, bowling, wrestling, and show choir come to a close, the competitive season for Xavier’s jazz band does as well. Six members will be leaving at the end of the school year with high hopes for college and hope to continue making music. Seniors Bryan Banowetz, Noah Hagen, Natalie Schrader, and Chris Williams have been members of the extracurricular activity all four years of high school, and seniors Matt Wardlaw and Nick Wallraff are members of the ensemble this year as well. “My brother played in jazz band first. When I went to the jazz concerts, I really enjoyed the music, so I decided to audition,” Schrader said. “Playing jazz music has definitely helped me to become a more independent player.” Becoming involved in jazz band also improves skills for marching, concert, and pep band. On Friday, February 15 the ensemble performed at the Tallcorn Jazz Festival at the University of Northern Iowa, and on Saturday, February 23 they performed at the Coe College Jazz Summit. The band placed
12 out of 20 possible rankings at UNI. “We got a lot of positive feedback during our critique, so I think our performance went fairly well,” Schrader said. The jazz band performed at the NEIBA competition held Saturday, March 2. This competition was held at Waterloo West High School, and hosted not only high school jazz bands, but also middle school jazz bands. Xavier performed first in the 4A division. Even though the seniors will be leaving soon, they are enthusiastic about the success of their season, as well as the memories they are taking with them. “I have great hope for the future of Xavier Jazz,” Hagen said. “It is always hard to step into leadership roles, but I am sure they will do a great job.” The band will continue to have performances throughout the spring and auditions for next year’s jazz band will take place in the fall.
