Girls’ basketball season to an end The Xavier girls’ basketball team finished their season last Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines in the girls’ state quarterfinal matchup. The No. 5 Saints faced off against the No. 4 Ankeny Hawkettes. Even though Ankeny had all five of their starters returning from last years’ state qualifying team, Xavier was stilled favored by two points in the pre-game overview. The score was 8-8 at the end of the first and neither team seemed to have an edge. When senior Emily Walvoord came out of the game with an injury after getting elbowed in her eye, the Hawkettes went on a 6-0 run and led 19-11 at halftime. “When she sat down, that’s when they went on a 6-0 run. And as a result of that, they spread it out right before the half,” Xavier coach Tom Lilly said. Walvoord came back in the third quarter but the Saints could not get out of the scoring slump. Even with her blurred vision and only playing for 15 minutes, Walvoord contributed eight points and six rebounds. Her teammate senior Alex Bartz had six rebounds, five blocked shots, and four points of her own. One of the biggest factors in the game was the free throw
shooting. Even though Xavier had 12 field goals and Ankeny 10, the Hawkettes out scored the Saints from the foul line scoring 18 points when Xavier only made one. “They made their free throws when they needed to and that hurt our chances.” junior Kayla Armstrong said. Ankeny came out on top beating Xavier with a final score of 39-25 and advanced to the championship game and lost to Iowa City West Senior Annie Dale drives to in overtime. the basket during the state Xavier finished tournament against Ankeny. the season with Hannah Brown Photo a 18-6 record and made the state tournament for the ninth time under coach Tom Lilly.
