Boys’ soccer looking to improve record The boys’ Xavier varsity soccer team starts their season off right with a win in their Jamboree on Thursday, March 29 against Solon. Chad Gilmer scored the first goal of the Saints’ season which ended the game with a score of 1-0. The Saints then played the Bettendorf Bulldogs and Pella in a tournament held on Saturday, March 31. The Saints finished the tournament with a 1-1 tie against Pella with Chad Gilmer getting the Saints only goal again, and a 3-0 loss under the Bulldogs. “I feel pretty good about our season, and we are starting to get in good practices and coming together better as a team,” senior Chad Gilmer said. The Saints came back after their loss in their first game in regular season on April 3 against the Prairie Hawks. The

game ended with Tom Bales and Logan Buschette getting the two goals of the night. On Tuesday, April 10 the Saints took on the Waterloo West Wahawks and finished the game with a score of 2-2 having seniors Buschette and Josh Steffensmeier getting the Saints’ goals. With two overtimes and pentalty kicks ending 4-3 the Saints lost to the Wahawks with the final score being 3-2. “Our goal is to win a state championship and progress as a team,” Gilmer said. Last Thursday the Saints took on the Jefferson J-Hawks and while they fought hard and kept the J-Hawks from scoring in regular time, it was the J-Hawks who came out on top with a final score of 1-0 going into overtime. “The start of the season hasn’t

Track teams prepare for Drake Relays It is early in the month of April but the Xavier boys’ and girls’ track teams have been busy. The girls’ team competed in the River Queen Invitational in Clinton on April 10. Senior Alex Bartz cleared 5-foot-1 to win the high jump, which was the Saints only first place finish on the day. Other honorable mentions Xavier had in Clinton were senior Hannah Rochford placing third in the 100 meter dash and the 2x100 team featuring junior Audrey Richards, senior Hannah Rochford and sophomores Allison Schwach and Molly Breitbach. Xavier finished seventh out of eleven teams with a total score of 48. The girls’ team also ran last weekend at Kingston Stadium in the Wilkinson Invitational. The Saints finished fifth with a total of 68. Breitbach placed first in the 100 meter dash and Rochford finished right behind her in second. Bartz continued her success this season by finishing second in the high jump. The Saints 4x800 relay finished second. Those included in this race were junior

Shelby Christensen, senior Rachel Sigmon, sophomore Rachel Brady, and freshman Kayla Torson. The Saints placed in the top three in other events including 4x400 Relay and the Sprint Medley Relay. Now onto the Xavier boys’ who also ran at Kingston Stadium on Saturday, April 14. First place winners for the Saints included the 1600 Medley Relay featuring seniors Nick Ball, Jordan Weber, Zach Stovie and junior Brandon Gradoville. Junior Craig Murtha won the discus and senior Alec Clasen cleared six-foot-two to win the high jump. Xavier placed fourth with a 86 point total. Both teamsran Tuesday, April 17. The boys participated in the Prairie Invitational and the girls in the Lion Relays and Linn-mar.
