Sports 15 Xavier boys’ soccer starts out strong with crushing 18-0 win April 11, 2013
The Xavier boys’ soccer team opened their season in the Washington Warriors Jamboree. This is an event where several teams compete against each other in a pre-season scrimmage. The game is just one half and does not count towards the team’s overall record. The Saints tied 0-0 against Solon High School. “With six senior captains there has been a lot of great senior leadership. The whole team is chipping in and working hard especially including the sophomores and juniors,” senior captain Colin Gunn said.
The Saints opened their regular season on Thursday, April 5 against Waterloo East High School at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex in Waterloo. The Saints conquered the Trojans 18-0 with senior captain Eli Smith, the leading scorer, earning four goals. Josh Hoffman and Kory Donithan each added three more goals to the scoreboard for the Saints, and Alex Haag and Daniel Cowden contributed two from sophomore Connor Ramlo. “We were really hoping goals as well. Five other team members scored one goal each to come out strong and have and the leading assists came a good chance to really work

“Senior leaders coupled with dynamic upcoming talent” The girls’ soccer team participated in the pre-season Jamboree at Kingston Stadium on April 2. The team won the exhibition match against sixth ranked (Class 1A) Iowa City Regina by a score of 2-0. “In the beginning of the game we looked a little off and out of position, but towards the end we started to strengthen up and pulled through. In practice this week our positioning has looked much better and we’re connecting passes better too,” junior Marisa Berutti said. The team has more goals than just winning games. “This year we want to grow
closer together as teammates on and off the field and that will help us connect better when it comes to games. We also want to grow stronger technically throughout the year and keep the streak going and win State again,” Berutti said. Xavier’s team lost three senior starters from last year, but they will keep a lot of experience with nine seniors on the team. However, the team must also look for the younger players to step up and fill the missing void from last year. The team has high expectations again this year after being ranked #1 in the pre-season poll. “We try not to focus on the
The fastest man at Xavier, Nick Steingreaber Senior Nick Steingreaber was known last fall as a running back/clutch wide receiver for the State Runner-up Xavier football team. Steingreaber had three receptions in the season for a total of 196 yards including a 95-yard bomb that set a new school record for longest reception. He also blew past Waterloo West on a 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Now Steingreaber is showing off his speed on the track. He has already placed first in the 60 meter dash at the University of Iowa indoor meet, as well as first in the 60 meter dash and the 4x100 at the ISU indoor meet.
What do you plan on doing next year? “I plan on attending either Utah State University or The University of St. Thomas and running track.”
What are your most important goals for this track season? “I would like to achieve a Drake Relay Championship in the 100 meter dash and the 4x100 relay. I’ve always dreamed of that and taking a victory lap holding the flag with my teammates. After Drake and hopefully a great regular season, I hope to win a State Championship in the 100 meter dash and the 4x100 to wrap up my senior season and a very fun, very blessed, high school career.” Connor Collins Sports Editor
high expectations people put on us. We just want to focus on one game at a time,” senior Lucy Martin said. The Saints will be in search of their eighth consecutive State Championship this year. The girls will officially begin their season on Monday, April 8, at Dubuque Hempstead. The team will also play at Iowa City High on April 11, at Cedar Rapids Jefferson on April 16, and at home against 11 ranked Dubuque Wahlert on April 18. “The talent this year is phenomenal! A great group of strong senior leaders, coupled with some dynamic upcoming
talent will make for a successful season. We’re excited with the prospects for the upcoming years!” Coach Emily Moses said. Kyle D’mello Sports Writer
