Xavier’s Kazimour Fitness Center has recently received new gym equipment. Although some of these machines are upgraded versions of the previous machines, some are machines Xavier has never had before. These include the rotary torso, rear deltoid machine, and the inner-outer thigh. The previous machines were purchased and moved out by a private individual with a connection to the athletic program. This new equipment totaled $67,000. $60,000 of the total was donated by the Xavier Booster Club. The other $7,000 was school funded.
There is one additional procedure in the weight room now, in order to maintain a level of cleanliness: Xavier’s nurse, Kris Naeve, has recommended that all students using the weight room record each use of the machines individually. “It is a fabulous improvement over what we had and we would like to thank the Xavier Booster Club for completely upgrading our facility,” Fitness and Wellness instructor Mr. Hauschildt said. advocates for them. As advocates, they traveled to the Iowa State Capitol for American Heart Association Day. They talked to their immediate representatives about passing a law to require high school students to be educated in CPR before graduating. The law was passed as part of the Healthy Kids Act in 2008 and requires that students take a CPR education class from a certified CPR instructor. Kearns and her parents also attended the White House Community Leaders Briefing Series in Washington D.C. on Friday, February 24. They met with about 150 doctors and other people with similar stories to promote cardiovascular health and the importance of CPR training. The family also had the opportunity to sightsee in D.C. The next step for Kearns and her family is to build momentum for a CPR requirement at the national level. This includes writing letters to Senators Charles Grassley and Tom Harkin, Chairman of the Committee of Education board and possible appearances on national TV shows. Kearns will keep pushing for a national requirement in CPR training. “You never know when you’ll be in a situation where you need to use CPR to save someone so close to you,” she said.
