News Xavier High School Xavier celebrates Catholic Schools Week Churches and schools all reflected on the significance and blessing of Catholic education during Catholic Schools Week from January 26- February 1. This year’s celebration is one to remember. The week at Xavier began with a snow day on Monday and two-hour delay on Tuesday. The all-schools Mass on Tuesday did not include the middle schools due to the delay. Father Dustin Vu stepped in to preside for Archbishop Michael Jackels, who was attending a funeral. After Mass, Principal Tom Keating presented Mr. Mike Goldsmith the EduCare Award for Excellence in Catholic Education. Mr. Goldsmith has been teaching

in Catholic schools for 22 years. He currently teaches social studies and religion classes. “Working at Xavier means I have been blessed by God beyond words,” Mr. Goldsmith said, “and the only way to hope to repay this debt is to lead a joyful life.” The EduCare Award is given to teachers who have taught over ten years in Catholic education, demonstrate teaching excellence, inspire and motivate students, is an example of Gospel values, and is recognized for their commitment to Catholic education. “It is somewhat of a lifetime achievement award,” Mr. Goldsmith said. “Maybe it means that I have faithfully run the race. I like to think that there’s quite a bit of race left in me yet.” The week continued with two early dismissals. The dress up day was favorite sports team on Wednesday and superhero day on Thursday. Before classes ended on Thursday, faculty and students danced and sang in the Ron Thillen Gymnasium to music performed by the Sidewinders, the 34th Army band. The Sidewinders are members of the National Guard, including Xavier’s Mr. Scott Schaub. He has been playing with the group for five years and has been in the National Guard for over 22 years. “I’m a little nervous,” Mr. Schaub said before the performance, “because I have two different lives.

Mr. Schaub was featured on the bass guitar for a few songs. Several Xavier students played along to the closing song “Can’t Hold Us.” The final dress up day was comfy/pajama day on Friday. Catholic Schools Week ended with Mini Dance Marathon sponsored by Student Senate on Saturday. The theme was USA, appropriate after the Sidewinders’ visit.

Students experience iPad changes
With much of Xavier getting settled into the second semester routine, students will see a few changes to their iPads in the upcoming weeks if they have not already. Parents had the option of attending an iPad meeting in January before any changes were made. The status of student iPad usage was discussed, including what was going well and what could be improved. There were also teachers who demonstrated a few ways iPads are used in the classroom. Finally, Principal Tom Keating and Vice Principal Angela Olson talked about social media and shared ways parents can stay informed and help their students develop good technology habits. IPad updates began soon after
the meeting concluded. Due to a bug happening with Apple earlier this fall, Xavier lost supervision on a group of students’ iPads. The easiest way to tell if supervision was lost was to look at the iMessage app. If it was gone, Xavier still had supervision, and if it remained, Xavier had lost supervision on that particular iPad. In order to regain control over the entire student body’s iPads, Xavier must “wipe” the iPads of all students who still have iMessage. In a matter of weeks, freshmen through seniors brought their iPads to the Xavier LMC to be reset. In doing so, Xavier regained control over the iPads. All students had the opportunity to back up any items on their iPads before this process began.
Once Xavier has regained supervision over all iPads, the iMessage app will be completely removed due to abuse of the app by students during class time. All apps that are 17+ will also be removed and not be available for download. This includes apps like Vine and Google Chrome, which could potentially contain content for a more mature audience. Students will still have access to all other entertainment apps in addition to their apps used for school. “Hopefully this information will help students understand we are just keeping the iPads working correctly,” Ms. Olson said. Two Saints attend March for Life January 22, 1973 is a date etched in the minds of many. It is the day the Supreme Court gave its decision on Roe vs. Wade, making abortion legal throughout the United States. Each year since that day 41 years ago, thousands of people gather together in a peaceful protest in Washington D.C. known as March for Life. This year, 41 Xavier High School students and 7 chaperones made the decision to attend March for Life. Their bus ride to Washington D.C. would take a total of 30 hours, but due to a severe winter storm, the bus had to turn around to avoid possibly dangerous roads only one day into the trip.
“When the bus had to turn around I was really disappointed,” junior Sierra Cavanaugh said. “I felt like we let down a lot of people, because here we are trying to speak for the voiceless but we let some bad weather stop us.” While most of the Xavier community wasn’t able to go, Xavier senior Colette Miller, freshman Camryn Miller, and family were able to attend the march. They had already made plans to fly in order to reduce travel time and found out when they arrived in D.C. that the people from Xavier were not coming. They decided to stay Camryn (‘17) and Colette (‘14) Miller pose with pro-life signs during and participate in the march, the 41st March for Life on January 22. Matt Miller Photo. since they were fortunate enough to have arrived safely and avoid the weather. The Miller family attended the Pro-Life Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as well as the march. “Even though that day in D.C. was incredibly cold, especially because of the wind chill, I couldn’t help but feel warm inside. It was just so reassuring to walk side by side with thousands, if not millions of people who feel the same about abortion as I do,” Colette Miller said of the march. Even though attending The Supreme Court building the march turned out to be a is the final destination for the challenge, students are not letting March for Life every year, it stop them and many hope to go as it relates to the decision next year to support the cause. of Roe vs. Wade. Saints know their Constitution On January 17, 2014, six Xavier students qualified as finalists for the Iowa State Bar Association “Know Your Constitution” contest. The finalists were scheduled to attend a luncheon to recognize their achievement, but the event was cancelled due to weather. Each of the six finalists, Andrew Billick, Andrew Khairallah, Morgan Delaney, Emma Hunt, Adam Millsap and Kara Zwanzinger, received a certificate and medal for being one of the 100 finalists from each House district in the state. This competition is available to every high school in the state. Each fall, a quiz with 50 multiple choice questions and one essay question is distributed to high school students. The essay question changes from year to year, and this year the topic was same sex-marriage. Students were required to write an essay about whether or not same sex-

marriage is constitutional. The students are then given several weeks to complete an openbook test. After all quizzes are returned to the Bar Association office, the committee grades the
quizzes to select the 100 finalists. “I like for Xavier students to participate in this competition because it’s fun to compete with students from all across the state,” Mr. Mike Goldsmith said.
“Just last year we had a national winner, and that is every AP Government teacher’s dream.” Out of the 100 finalists from each Iowa House district, five are selected to go to an all expenses paid trip to D.C. Noah Hagen, who graduated in 2013, is the only Xavier student to have ever received this grand prize. “This is a good experience to have because it teaches us a lot about the Constitution,” senior Kara Zwanzinger said. “It helps us learn valuable lessons that can help us in life.” For more information about the “Know Your Constitution” contest, see Mr. Goldsmith.

A girl’s guide to a single Valentine Okay single ladies, I know that it’s Valentine season and being surrounded by couples can ultimately be depressing. I know how you feel. But it’s time to stop moping and realize how great it is to be single! It’s only high school, and you have so many years ahead of you to find the right guy. So for now, I have written a guide for all my ladies who are single in high school. 1. Realize that not everyone is dating. The next time you go to one of your classes look around. Look at every one of the girls in your class and try to think whether she is dating or not. Chances are, you’ll find that not everyone has a boyfriend. 2. Recognize the benefits. Think about it. Your friends who are taken can’t go to a party and flirt with that hot guy. They can’t go out often. Meanwhile, you can go out whenever (you don’t have to stay in because “My boyfriend said he’d call me sometime between 4 and 10”), you can dress up as cute as you want, and you can flirt! 3. Busy yourself. If you find that your old Friday night gal pals
Emma enjoys her Valentine’s Day as a happy, single lady. Meghan Gerke Photo. are all out with their “guy pals,” single friend (like your crush!) or please resist the urge to sit inside just don’t go. If you choose not watching The Notebook and eating to go, refer to step number three. a tub of Ben & Jerry’s. Go online 5. Explore. You’re young. and look up a facial mask recipe. You’re single. Don’t sit around “Do your homework.” Paint your all day moping; do something nails. Watch a brand new thriller about it! Scope out some new movie. Read a book. Catch up cuties. It doesn’t matter. You’ve on some beauty sleep. There got your whole life ahead of you. are so many things you can do. 6. Don’t be desperate. Please, 4. Don’t become a third wheel. please, please don’t run around This is crucial. It’s extremely throwing yourself at every boy awkward to be the only one not you see. You don’t have to dress a cuddled up in a booth at Zoey’s certain way, do your hair or makeup Pizzeria with a shared Zookie, or a certain way, or act a certain way trying to hear the movie over the to get a guy. It may sound totally sounds of couples making out. If cliché, but be yourself. You will find some of your friends invite you somebody who likes you for who out, and you realize that you’ll you are. It may not be this week, this be the odd one out, invite another month, this year, or even during high
school. But you will find someone. 7. Above all, don’t worry, be happy. In the end, your single friends still love you (a girls’ night out with fellow single chicks is a good thing), your taken friends still love you (you can talk to them about guy woes without hearing “oh yeah? Well my boyfriend said this in our last fight...”), your family still loves you, and somewhere a future partner is waiting to love you. For now, hold your head up high, smile, live, love, and be loved. Emma Hunt A&E Editor

Celebrate all kinds of love
Hannah spends time bringing treats and happiness to others to celebrate love on Valentine’s Day. Meghan Gerke Photo. comes in so many forms and the greatest thing is to love and feel loved. Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to do just that, but its main purpose is overlooked by indifference and complaints. We should celebrate Valentine’s Day by showing love and appreciation. My parents give me Valentine’s Day cards every year, because they want to give me an extra reminder of how much they love me. Valentine’s Day is a time to show your family how much you love and appreciate everything they do for you. Another form of love is for friends. Think about how much time you spend with your friends and how much they are there for you. My friends are so important to me and they are one of main reasons I enjoy coming to school. Doesn’t love
and friendship go hand in hand? I’m not discouraging celebrating your Valentine’s Day with a boyfriend or girlfriend because this is yet another form of love. If you are like me and planning to go out with your significant other that is fantastic. Take this day as a time to realize how much they mean to you and celebrate being together. So as you wake up on February 14, make it a point to be happy and show all those around you how much you love them. Love can be shown simply by a smile or a random act of kindness, and we are lucky enough to have a whole day dedicated to it.

The fact that Valentine’s Day is approaching comes as a surprise to nobody. You are either looking at the calendar and dreading this holiday often referred to as SAD (single’s awareness day) or you are counting down the days until you can have a special date with your significant other. Maybe you are completely indifferent to the idea of Valentine’s day and plan to treat it as just another day of the week. No matter what category you fall into, I encourage you to think about Valentine’s Day when you were a kid. You would walk into the classroom with the pile of Valentines you had picked out, wrote on, and attached candy to. You would smile as you read “You are Dino-mite” with a huge picture of an animated dinosaur on the front, or if you were like me, your biggest decision was whether to buy Barbie or Hello Kitty themed cards. Everyone in the class brought enough cards and candy for each person, and you would go home feeling happy, complimented, and loved. Isn’t that the point of Valentine’s day? To feel loved? This is where I started to realize that kids are the ones who are getting it right. Love

Give wrestling the respect it deserves Wrestling. The word alone means so much to my family, because of the way we grew up. We are a wrestling family. Wrestling is a test of strength, discipline, and willpower. Unfortunately, not many of my fellow students share my deep love for this sport and the stands at many of the meets are filled with the same crowd of parents. My love for wrestling started at the age of eight when I would spend my weekends at my younger brother’s tournaments. As I grew older, I fell deeper in love and showed my support in different ways. From managing my freshman year, to cheering for the next two, and now being the “Official Photo Lady,” I have gotten to see many matches, upsets, and victories over the years. One thing that hasn’t changed is the student sections. The student sections are almost nonexistent compared to other schools. At a meet earlier in the season against Prairie, the opposing stands were not only packed with the wrestler’s loving families, but also with their fellow classmates. They even had a pep band that played their fight song after each victory. At our
Freshman Josh Gerke takes down an opponent at a wrestling meet. Meghan Gerke Photo. home meets, our students section is out-numbered by other schools, and even when students do show up, they do not pay attention or cheer. I understand how busy Xavier students’ lives are. All students have reasons not to attend these meets and duals such as work, sports, homework, and just not having time. Although every student, including me, struggles with a lack of time, there is still time in the week to attend a two hour long meet or even just come for some of the meet to support our boys. Students made time in their weeks to attend football games. What is the difference with wrestling? Another reason students don’t attend is that they just don’t
understand the sport. Did you understand football the first time you watched a game, or did someone have to explain it to you? Like any sport, you can pick up the rules of wrestling quite quickly. There are always willing parents, like my dad, who would love to help you understand the calls that are being made. I am always at the meets, too, so come find me. I’m the one with the camera. This season has been one of the better seasons for the Saints. Our own Nick Drahozal has reached his goal of breaking the school’s record of overall wins in four years. Clint Lembeck has held his own for his second year at Xavier and has remained a ranked member
of our team all season. Many of our other boys, including my brother Josh, have helped the team achieve wins over schools such as Iowa City High and Washington. Although we do not have any more home meets this season, districts is on February 15 at Jefferson, which is just across town. I hope that I will see many more of my fellow classmates supporting our wrestlers as they try to qualify for state, which is February 20-23 in Des Moines. Let’s pack the stands, Saints!

Share God’s unconditional love God appears to everyone in different ways, whether that’s nature, pets, or other humans. He is always there. Now, when you notice Him is a completely separate concept. In the most joyful times He may be easy to find. He can be the first flower in spring or first snowflake on your
eyelash in the winter. God can be speaking to you through an old friend or a character in a book. Even in the darkest of times, God is with you. You just may need to look harder. He can be the airbag in your car when you get in a crash keeping you alive. Or maybe He is the last tear that is shed on your cheek for a deceased relative at their funeral. No matter what, He is there. So why are we not showing this same unconditional
love for those around us? Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day; what better day is there to show your love to others? Show people you care about them and surprise them. Send your mom flowers at work. Bring your dad coffee in the morning in his favorite mug. Give your favorite teacher a letter showing how much you care. Call up your friend you haven’t seen in months. Surprise people the way God surprises you every day. Sometimes God’s angels
and blessings come in the strangest people or the most unpredictable way. And sometimes, they have always been there, right in front of us. Be unpredictable and share the love this Valentine’s Day, but don’t stop there. God doesn’t take a day off, and neither should we.
Many people have probably heard the Doctor Seuss quote “Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.” And the reason it has become so popular is because of how true it really is. So far in my life, I think there is one thing I have learned for sure, and it’s that there is no such thing as normal. Sure, you can try and describe what you think normal is, but the truth is that what you might consider normal might be different than what someone else thinks. Even if there was one perfect definition of normal,
would it matter? I would hope that you would say no, but I understand that learning to be yourself is hard. Many of the choices we make and the actions we do revolve around being accepted by our peers. We’ve all been told not to fall under peer pressure. But I think that no matter how good people try to be, we’ve all become a victim at some point of trying to change who we are or hiding parts of ourselves from others for fear of being judged. One of the things I love most about my friends is that we can be our crazy selves with each other, without worrying about what others are thinking of us. The fact that our society makes people feel the need to blend in to be accepted is wrong and should be changed.
The more people I meet, the more I come to realize we all have our own little quirks that make us who we are. Those quirks are good things that should be shared and celebrated, because God made us that way for a reason. He doesn’t make mistakes! In my short 16 years, I have yet to meet one perfectly normal human being, which is what has led me to believe such a person doesn’t exist. If everyone was the same, the world we know now would be so much less wonderful and entertaining. So what if you think people will make fun of you simply for being you? People can always find things to criticize if you let them. But chances are that if you open up and do your best to be yourself, you’ll find a new
confidence you never knew you could have and friends who love you for who you truly are that are worth keeping. If people can’t accept you for your dorky, crazy, weird self, then that’s their loss. I say we all start being honest with ourselves and embrace every part of who we are from now on and see where it takes us. I’m Amy Boe, and I am horrible at telling stories, awkward, loud, make stupid jokes, embarrass myself a lot, and would choose being myself over someone else’s version of normal any day. Who are you?

10 years They started going out at the start of their junior year and recently got married in October 2013. They got to know each other when Kelly asked to wear Matt’s football jersey to a game, then he called and asked her to be his Homecoming date. Two months later he asked her to be his girlfriend on their way home from a wrestling meet. It was as romantic as you could ever imagine. Their favorite memory was a toss up between junior year research paper and Saturday school. Just kidding! They both loved their senior Prom. Now they live in Chicago and love running, yoga, and listening to live music together. Kelly works in advertising and Matt works in investments. Kelly is Olivia Krapfl’s sister.

They dated throughout high school, graduating with the great class of 2006 (whoot!), and college. In the fall of 2011, they got married. Ryan and Abby currently live in West Des Moines. Ryan is the choral director at Valley High School. Abby is finishing up a graduate degree to be a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. They still have a collection of handwritten “love letters” from high school, and from time to time they get them out to read them aloud and laugh. They have many fond memories of Xavier: conversations with favorite teachers, meeting friends for ice cream after school, cramming for tests at 6 a.m. in the middle of the hallway, and sharing plates of Marge’s biscuits and gravy. Ryan is Emma Deignan’s brother.

Since he worked at Jimmy John’s, he used the leftover bread from that day to spell out HC. Once, Allison stole Pat’s keys while he was at show choir and made a copy of them, which according to Pat was “literally a felony.” She filled his car with balloons that were full of confetti. Valentine’s Day Valentine’s day, the expression-of-love holiday, originated with St. Valentine, a Roman priest during the reign of emperor Claudias. At the time, Claudias would not allow the marriage of young people because of the impact marriage had on war performance. This is where St. Valentine came in. He had a strong passion for marriage and secretly performed them. He was caught, put in prison, and eventually sentenced to death. He wrote a letter to a blind woman before he died and signed it, “From your Valentine”. St. Valentine is the patron saint of love.

A&E 11 Xavier’s Children’s Theater cast performs “Tarzan” February 13, 2014
Each year, young children make their way to Xavier in the middle of February to see Xavier’s Fine Arts Department perform a Children’s Theater. From the classic story of Cinderella to the adventures of Peter Pan, the performers have given children memories that will last a long time. The actors plan to do that again this year in Disney’s Tarzan, which runs from February 12 through February 15. Similar to last year’s story of The Jungle Book, Tarzan revolves around a boy who is raised by animals in the jungle, only to later find out that he is human. He is accompanied by his gorilla mother, Kahla, played by freshman Kayla Seymour, and his human friend, Jane, portrayed by Chloe Streif, on an adventure through the jungle. Tarzan is portrayed by sophomore Tyler Testin, who is a new face to the theater. “I took one of Mr. C’s Acting classes, but this is my first play ever,” Testin said. “When I saw
my name on the poster, I was very excited to start working on my role.” Unlike most productions at Xavier, the Children’s Theater is casted, practiced, and performed in only two weeks. Since the auditions, the cast and crew have been busy building trees and treehouses, practicing lines, and blocking scenes. “The cast has been working very hard the past few weeks, and I’m excited to perform with them,” Testin said. “The shows are going to be action-packed and interactive for the kids.” The six scheduled showings for Tarzan are Wednesday and Thursday at 4:30 p.m, Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m, and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $3 both at the door and in the Activities Office.
The Xavier Speech team led by coaches Mrs. Lisa Streif, Scott Davidson, and Laura Travagiakis competed in the district contest on Saturday, January 25 at Monticello High School. 13 of the 15 groups there received a Division 1 rating and headed to the State competition to perform Around 60 students have been practicing hard for the past few months to get to the achievements they have now. Some of the acts that went to State are Musical Theater, Ensemble Acting, One Act Play, Group Improvisation, Radio Broadcasting, TV News, Short Film, and Choral Reading. “The kids stepped up to the challenge and performed beautifully. We still have a lot of work to do, but I am confident we will bring home another AllState Speech banner to hang in the theater!” Streif commented. The talented voices and acting of these students creates many scenarios and situations filled with a wide range of emotions. The Large Group State Speech competition was held on February 8 at Linn-Mar High School. 12 out of the 13 groups received Division 1 ratings, including “Much Ado About Nothing,” “To Remember,” “TV News KREW,” “Next to Normal,” Airy’s Improvisation, “Steel Magnolias,” “Newsies,”
“Mind of the Beholder,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Radio KAZZ 1470 AM,” and Esker’s Improvisation. The groups found out who was nominated for All-State on Monday, February 10. All-State will take place on February 22 at Iowa State.

Xavier Poms go to Nationals Despite a pit stop in Dallas, the Poms traveled to warmer climates for the second year in a row to compete in the Nationals competition that was held February 1-2 in Orlando, Florida. This was the second year the Poms team has qualified for the competition. On Saturday, the team qualified for semifinals in the Poms division. “I’m very proud of the team for all the hard work and dedication they have all put in,” senior Pom Charlotte Dean said. “It was emotional, but it was a great way to end my Poms career.” Auditions for next year’s team will be in the spring.

Once, me and my girlfriend were on a date, eating Chinese at my place, and she began choking on an egg roll. I was freaking out and didn’t know what to do, so I grabbed her and I performed the Heimlich maneuver on her, so she coughed it up. But the egg roll was delicious.
My boyfriend and I stopped at Taco Bell to get some food, and we were both wearing our Kairos necklaces. While the cashier was taking our order, she saw them and said, “Aw! You have matching necklaces to show everyone that you’re a couple! How cute!” Once we turned away, we both broke out in laughter.

One time I was on a date and I took the girl to Genghis Grill and after we were finished we got in the car and I farted. It was just really uncomfortable and also a deal breaker.
When my boyfriend asked me out, I got excited and went for a high five. He was getting ready to hug me and I was just laughing with my hand in the air. It was so embarrassing!
Words of Relationship Wisdom With Emma Hunt
Hi, everyone! If you’ve read my opinion article, we should all know by now that I am a single girl living in a relationship dominant world. I’ve decided to use my wit and charm to help all of you with your struggling relationships. Hopefully we have all caught on to the irony of this situation. But if you have any
questions for me or need some help with your relationship, feel free to email me at emma. hunt@beasaint.org. I will never reveal any personal information or the people mentioned unless you want me to. There is an example of a question and answer below. I hope to hear from you!
I feel like my boyfriend loves his beard more than me. The only times he talks to me is when he wants my Chapstick. I think he knows the flavor of my Chapstick more than the color of my eyes. He spends more time with his mirror than with me. I’m not sure how to be with a person who cares about himself more than me. What should I do? Honey, you have to get out of there. Any guy who loves himself more than you is not worth your time. If you are even questioning being in the relationship then it is time to go. Maybe sit down with him and tell him how you feel, if you want to get all emotional about it. Maybe he will change his ways. But if you want to take control of your situation, leave him. You are worth so much more than a beard.

Meet Xavier’s New Athletic Trainer: Chloe Grimes Q: How long have you been an athletic trainer? A: I have been an athletic trainer since May 2013. Q: Where did you go to college? A: I went to Iowa and started school for training in 2010. Q: Why did you want to work at Xavier? A: I like working in schools where sports are big. The programs at Xavier are all very successful. Q:Was this what you always wanted to do? A:I knew I wanted to be an athletic trainer sophomore year of high school. I wanted to be a lawyer before, because I liked winning arguments. Q: What’s the most rewarding part of your job? A: I love seeing how happy the athletes become once they get back to practicing after I have helped them out.

a bit boring, but most people can agree that a ferocious dunk can really excite the crowd. “When Matt dunks, it ignites the rocket of excitement for the Xavier student section,” said senior student section member Miles Sullivan. Senior center Matt Nelson can get up and slam with power. With a 6’8 frame and a solid 250 pound base, most dunks really rock the crowd. “After a dunk, the crowd really gets into the game and the noise pumps the team up,” Nelson said. “When you look over at the student section when they are going nuts, it makes you want to play harder for them.” As seen on Mediacom channel 22, Lou’s Crew (Xavier’s student section) went crazy after a thunderous dunk on the Cedar Falls players. Nelson finished the game with three dunks and a total of 14 points as the Saints won the game by a score of 65-38. After a 62-57 win over the Linn-Mar Lions this past Friday, the Saints look to wrap up the the final two weeks of the regular season with wins. Bowling teams continue stride Freshman Gerke paves the way With a 8-2 record and heading into the last two meets of the regular season, the Xavier boys’ bowling team is looking to build momentum and carry it over into the postseason, despite dropping two games in a row. “We suffered two consecutive losses to two solid teams,” senior Sam Hart said. “We plan to bounce back next week and beat Waterloo West.” This year’s boys’ team already holds the record at Xavier for most wins in a season and most consecutive wins. Their only two losses to Linn-Mar and Jefferson were played close the whole way through. They are looking forward to continuing their success throughout the rest of their season. “Our current goals are to prepare ourselves effectively to perform at state qualifying and then perform well at state,” Hart said. As for the girls’ bowling team, they are looking to keep improving and have fun while doing it. Despite their 0-9 record, the girls are steadily getting better. “The team is made up of a mix
of new and experienced players, but we’re all getting better,” senior Ellie Burke said. “Every practice everyone improves something.” The boys and girls took on Waterloo West Friday, Febraury 7. This last home meet served as “Senior Night”. The boys came away with a victory, improving their record to 8-2. Senior Zach Schnoebelen led the team with a score of 458. The girls dropped their meet but bowled their highest mark of the season with a score of 2220, led by freshman Tanya Zaugg’s 387. “It’s finally getting real that we are ending the season because it’s my last home meet,” senior Ashley Pudil said. “It means so much that I’ve been with the team for four years. Our team is so small and we’ve gotten so close. It’s sort of bittersweet. It feels good, but I want to start the season over again.” State qualifying for bowling is February 18 at Muscatine.
The Saints’ wrestling team continues adding achievements to its running list of memorable accomplishments this season. Senior Nick Drahozal broke the school record of 109 wrestling wins in four years. Drahozal beat the previous record held by his older brother, David Drahozal, who graduated in 2006. The success does not stop there; Drahozal and senior Sean Ickes were both crowned as Mississippi Division Valley Conference champions as well. The seniors are not the only players who are adding to the wrestling team’s triumphs this season. Freshman Josh Gerke is one of three freshmen who have been aiding the team. Being a freshman in any varsity sport can be tough especially when competing with mostly juniors and seniors, but Gerke takes it as an opportunity to better his wrestling skills. “I’ve been wrestling since kindergarten,” Gerke said. “It’s pretty cool to be able to go against high competition all the time.” Part of the wrestling lifestyle Morgan Breitbach Sports Assistant Editor includes gaining or losing weight
in order to compete in a certain weight level, no matter if the player is on varsity or junior varsity. “My favorite things to eat while cutting weight are whip cream, because it weighs like nothing and tastes amazing, pineapple and kiwi,” Gerke said. Gerke has shown dedication to the sport throughout this season. He has managed to cut around 22 pounds. “I started the season weighing about 140 or 142,” Gerke said, “I’m wrestling at 120 right now.” Gerke is at 24 pins right now, which breaks the school record of 21 pins in a season. His hopes are to qualify for state every year in high school and to reach his 100th win by the time he is a junior, a goal which Drahozal accomplished in his senior year. The Saints are not far away from wrestling districts, which start Saturday, February 15. State begins Wednesday, February 19.

Swimmers move to district Seniors take the lead Although Xavier High School does not have a swimming team, eight boys participate at other metro high schools. These include Washington and Kennedy. Both schools have completed their regular seasons, and four of the Xavier swimmers have qualified for districts. Senior Nick Durin has qualified for state and sophomore Mitch Anderson is an alternate. “We are tapering now, which is going well,” junior Evan Bednar said, who swims for Kennedy. Bednar is joined by sophomore Nick Lyon at Kennedy while Durin and Anderson swim for Washington. Despite being
from a different school, the swimmers mesh well with their welcoming teammates. “I have made very good friends. I really like hanging out with my teammates,” Bednar said. On Saturday, Febraury 8 the swimmers traveled to Mercer Park in Iowa City. At the end of the day, Durin qualified for state in the 100 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, the 200 medley relay, and the 200 free relay, helping Washington to win the meet. The state swim meet will take place Saturday, Febraury 15 in Marshalltown. Morgan Breitbach Sports Assistant Editor

Achieving a Dream
Daniel Vega Sports Writer It was stressful, but it was all about chasing my dream to play college football in the Football Bowl Subdivision. My journey began my sophomore year. My brother made a highlight tape which he sent out to almost every major college around the country. Almost every school that we sent it to mailed back. Most responses were just to let us know they had received the video. The summer before my junior year was the time I had to prove my abilities. The first camp I attended was at Kansas State. I had done enough to get their attention. Later that summer, I had attended a camp at Iowa State where I shined in the coaches eyes. Coach Paul Rhoads really liked how I played and moved for my size. They watched me closely in drills. They also invited me to games that season and to ISU’s Elite Junior Day. This past summer was my last chance to gain a D-I offer. I already
hadoffersfromalmostevery Missouri Valley Conference team, but I had always dreamed of playing FBS. After the championship game this fall, the stress finally sunk in when I hadn’t had any offers from FBS schools. My dream had always been to play in all kinds of bowl games. But realizing I had good offers from great schools, I had to make a decision to take the stress off my and my parents’ backs. On December 10, at 7:29 p.m., I committed to Illinois State University. I felt I had made the right choice. Everything seemed perfect. My parents were happy with the school and they would be able to watch me play. Then Wyoming offered. When that came in, I knew I had to at least check the place out. It was my chance to play FBS football. My dream would become reality if I liked the school. After my visit “like” was an understatement. I loved everything about Wyoming. The scenery, the coaches, the campus, the facilities. This was when I realized my dream would become a reality. On January 23, at 1:17 p.m., I sent a Facebook message to one of the defensive line coaches telling him, “I’m in!” I later called to give him the same message. To this day, I still am in love with the school. Having a Xavier teammate (Cole Turner) on the way to Wyoming also was a selling factor. My family will be further away, but it’s all about chasing a dream.
As the season comes to a close, the Saints are hoping to give their seniors a ride to remember. This year, the Saints have relied on key leadership from seniors Hayley Deutmeyer, Abby Watson, and Maddie Bertsch. “My last year has been awesome,” Deutmmeyer said. “We have battled and fought together. I don’t want it to end.” The Saints have been fairing well this season with a 9-9 record and look to do some damage in the 4A playoffs. “We are just trying to stay focused and finish the year strong,” Bertsch said. Making it to state has been a goal all year long, especially since the team won the 4A championship last year. The girls attempt to catch a free ball at a Xavier home “After playing 5A schools game. Amanda Wymore Photo. all year, it makes you tougher. We are excited to keep Look for the Saints tonight working,” Deutmeyer said. Deutmeyer had 15 points as they take on Iowa City West as the Saints beat Cedar in a home double-header. Falls in a 48-43 match. The Saints lost in a tough battle at home 55-35 against Linn-Mar. Bertsch Nic Ekland led the Saints with 10 points. Sports Writer
