Xavier High School
Football team undefeated for second time in history The Xavier football team finished the regular season last Friday with a perfect 9-0 record for the second time in school history. The last time the Saints went undefeated in the regular season, they ended up going 13-0 and winning the 2006 State Championship. “State was definitely a goal we had at the beginning of the season,” senior quarterback Reggie Schulte said. Schulte finished a record setting regular season completing 102-135 passes for 1,665 yards and 28 touchdowns, 12 of which were caught by senior Corbin Woods. “It feels good to finish the regular season undefeated. It’s a great accomplishment for everyone on the team that
gives it their all, day in and day out, but the real season started yesterday, (Saturday) and we have to focus on getting better everyday at practice, taking it one game at a time.” Woods said. Xavier’s last game of the regular season was against the Linn-Mar Lions. Linn-Mar was in a similar situation last year when they beat Xavier in the last game of the regular season to cement their perfect 9-0 season. Things have flipflopped this year as Linn-Mar was smashed by Xavier with a score of 42-6. The Saints scored all of their points in the first half and the first touchdown came on the first play from scrimmage on a 57yard bomb from Schulte to
Nick Steingreaber. Xavier played Iowa City High (4-5) on Wednesday, October 24 at Xavier. If Xavier wins, they would play the winner of Davenport Assumption vs. Waterloo East next Monday, October 29. Connor Collins Sports Writer
Cross country seniors saying goodbye As the cross country season draws to a close, the Xavier High School cross country seniors are taking stock of their last meets. They are weighing all the positive outcomes that have come their way because they chose to participate in cross country, the sport they love. Taking part in cross country has offered its members many memorable moments and lessons. “The advice I would give to cross country runners is to have fun and enjoy the experience because it goes by fast,” senior Zach Schowalter said. Senior Sarah Chicchelly commented on how she learned to become a better teammate, and most of all how she made lots of new friends because of cross country. These friends and memories are what the seniors will cherish for a lifetime. The girls’ cross country team seniors Chicchelly, Eileen Fagan, and Allison Pitz, contributed to the 4th place finish at the MVC Divisional Meet on Thursday, October 11, at the Dubuque Soccer Complex. A week later, they moved on to place 6th overall at the State Qualifying Meet in Anamosa. “Participating in cross country
has given me self-discipline, determination, perseverance, and great leadership skills,” Pitz said. Seniors Grant Hunt, Daniel Pape and Brandon Gradoville led the boys’ team to a 7th place finish overall in the MVC Divisional Meet. The boys moved up to capture a 2nd place finish in the State Qualifying Meet, resulting in advancing to the State Meet. Junior Jacob Schmitt and sophomore Luke Koechner placed 5th and 6th overall, respectively, in the State Qualifying Meet. The State Meet will be held on Saturday, October 27, at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge. “Cross country has been the best thing I’ve participated in in high school. I love it so much and I can’t imagine my life without it. It has given me the confidence to push through tough times because the rewards are endless,” senior Pitz said. Saying goodbye to high school cross country will be tough, but the memories and lessons learned will stay with the runners for years to come.
