15 Boys’ golf approaches season record Football team remains undefeated September 27, 2011

The boys’ golf team kept their season going strong last week. The team placed second in the Tiger Invitational at Cedar Falls, led by a one over par 73 shot by junior Matt Junge, and a three over par 75 by junior John Ingwersen. Later in the week, the team finished second in the Xavier quad, where Junge and senior Robbie Thinnes shot a 35, one stroke away from the meet medalists. Coach Tim O’Brien is happy with the season up to this point. “So far we have had good success. We have a record of 5814, and 59 wins is the most wins for a Xavier’s boys golf team. We have the opportunity to set the record in our next meet,” O’Brien said. The team will also try to capture a Valley Division title with their 26 stroke lead. In Xavier’s last meet, the team placed second at the Iowa City Triangular. They lost by two strokes, and Ben Sagers led the way for the Saints by shooting a 41. The boys are currently ranked 12th in the state with districts only a week away. “I think that this team can make state, and perform well. We are a very good team and a lot of our results have shown that,” Junge said. The team is prepared for the tough road ahead of

them, and they are eager to become the first boys’ golf team to go to state in Xavier history. Districts will be held at Elmcrest Country Club on October 1st. The top three teams of the meet will go to state, and the top ten individuals will also participate in the state meet. Xavier feels confident as a team.” Our team has a lot of depth, and that should help us with qualifying as a team,” Junge said. Before the team participates in districts, they play in the Waterloo East Triangular at Gates Park on September 27th.

The Xavier football team looked to improve on their 3-0 start on September 14 as they faced Dubuque Wahlert at Xavier. On the first play from scrimmage in the game, junior Brendan Miller scampered untouched for a 64 yard touchdown. On the next offensive play, quarterback Reggie Schulte found Corbin Woods for an 85 yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 15-0. The Saints never looked back and won the game 53-14. Miller, in place of Cal Stovie, ran for 236 yards. The team played 42nd Street rival Kennedy at Xavier on September 21. Coming into the game, the Saints had outscored their opponents by a total of 19835. Senior Reggie Schulte threw for four touchdown passes and the Saints’ defense held Kennedy scoreless. The team won handily 35-0. With the win, the saints

improved their record to 5-0. “We’ve been working hard every day at practice and we really have come together as a team,” junior Sean Ickes said. Only 5 games into the year, Schulte has tied the single season Xavier record for touchdown passes in a season with 18 touchdown passes. He also holds the record for Xavier career touchdown passes with 30. The Saints have now outscored their opponents 233-35. “We are just focusing on getting better each week and playing one game at a time,” senior Tristen Scallon said. The team is ranked 4th in the 4a state polls and looks to continue their undefeated season tonight, September 27, against Cedar Rapids Washinton at Kingston Stadium. Alex Fox Sports Writer

Saints continue strong run The Xavier volleyball team fought hard against 5A Kennedy Cougars on Tuesday, September 11. After the first two matches, the Saints were down 2-0. However, they were able to win the next two matches to tie the game up at two sets each. In game five, the Saints were defeated with a score of 11-15. This game did not hurt the team’s standing in the IGHSA poll as they were still ranked seventh in class 4A. “I feel really good about the way the season is going and we are always looking to improve, but when we play our game we can beat anybody,” senior captain Sarah Homan said. On Saturday, September 15, the Saints competed in the Benton Community tournament. They won their pool with a 3-0 record beating Durant, Cascade, and Marion. The Saints were on to the semi-finals against Union. Union came out with the victory, winning with scores of 25-23 and 28-26. Although the Saints did not

make it to the championship game, they saw good personal results. Sophomore Kayla Torson gathered 35 kills and 24 digs along with Homan made 87 assists and junior Halle Heying collected 33 digs. On Tuesday, September 18, the Saints hosted 5A number one ranked Iowa City High. The team lost in three games with scores of 25-18, 25-23, and 25-19. The Saints are now ranked eighth in the IGHSA poll after this game. On Saturday, September 22, they competed in the Dubuque Invite. The Saints went 2-1 in pool play, beating Jefferson and Dubuque Senior and losing to 5A Pleasant Valley. In the quarterfinals, the Saints beat Kennedy. City High beat the Saints in the semi-finals, and ended up placing second overall. Pleasant Valley took first. The Saints played away against Washington on Tuesday, September 25.
